Aether Haus adopts Wim Hof way

Aether Haus, a 31,000sq ft contrast bathing facility inspired by the Wim Hof method, has opened in the West End of Vancouver, Canada.

Owned by founder Kevin Frank, the studio has been designed as an inclusive space for the public and members, with an ethos of warm hospitality.

Aether Haus offers a range of semiguided and self-guided sessions in addition to a cold plunge programme led by Wim Hof-certified instructors.

In order to foster connection and allow guests to create deeper relationships with themselves and the community, the space is a phone-free environment.

Frank said: “We created Aether Haus to welcome everyone, not just the hyper health-conscious. This is a space for people to

simply show up as they are and experience the power of stillness.”

A spokesperson told Spa Business that Aether Haus would like to expand across British Columbia and is aiming to open a second location in 2027.

Alberto Apostoli and studio create medi-spa for Terme Preistoriche in Montegrotto Terme

Terme Preistoriche Resort and Spa in Montegrotto Terme, Italy, is due to open an additional wellness clinic designed by Alberto Apostoli and his team in Q4 of this year.

The new medical area will be called Neró Clinic: Wellness Revolution and it isn't the first time Apostoli has worked with the thermal spa resort.

He designed the property’s existing 1,200sq m spa called Neró Spa, which opened in 2019.

Known for its approach to wellness architecture, Studio Apostoli also created a collection of zeroemission suites in 2023 and is working with the resort to redesign the property’s 47 guestrooms and upgrade the dining spaces.

We bring together a wealth of experience, having operated facilities in almost 30 countries

The new 550sq m medi-spa will have two floors of treatment spaces for rehabilitation and physiotherapy.

The design draws inspiration from the resort’s Art Nouveau architecture and is intended to broaden the spa’s appeal to more diverse clientele seeking medical and health-focused services.

The materials used include dark wood panelling, wallpaper with natural motifs with etched metal trim accents. The effect is a cocooning and serene environment.

The treatment rooms will have metal and glass partitions that separate to provide private access to the surrounding 50,000sq m Colli Euganei Regional Park.

While we don't promise to "solve" trauma completely in a week, we create profound shifts attendees build upon with our aftercare support
The key is teaching participants to recognise burnout warning signs and implement microinterventions early

Immersive therapy retreat provider Resurface has announced its line-up of nontraditional group surfing and mental health improvement programmes for the rest of this year. Two retreats will take place in Tamraght, Morocco, in October and November. Guests will stay at the boutique guest house called Riad Dar Haven. The first retreat will focus on trauma resolution and will be held between 11-18 October. The second will address resilience and burnout prevention between 15-22 November. Both are limited to groups of eight to 12 participants to allow for meaningful connections to form between guests and mental health practitioners.

Surfing for "flow"

Guests at both retreats will experience the Resurface Method, a therapeutic framework that is built around creating a state of flow. This heightened mental state is achieved through immersive creative activities – in Resurface’s protocol, surfing. Resurface was founded in 2017 by therapist and trauma clinician Josh Dickson. He explained to Spa Business why surfing is the chosen activity, saying: “Surfing creates immediate

■ The retreat condenses months of therapy into a few days

Traditional therapy has plateaued. I recognised we needed to address the whole person – mind, body and spirit

flow states, which research shows enhance problem-solving. The physical fatigue naturally lowers psychological defences, creating authentic breakthroughs in therapy. Plus, the ocean itself is therapeutic - it demands presence, teaches resilience and provides a powerful metaphor for riding life's waves.”

In combination with group therapy sessions, guests are taught about how their mind works during psycho education sessions, memory work and movement sessions.

The process

Every participant has a personalised intake session with Dickson before joining the programme.

After the retreats, guests are given access to an alumni community online, follow-up check-ins and ongoing one-to-one support. The

company is also launching an app later this year for continued support.

Dickson said seven days creates the optimal conditions for breakthrough moments and significant progress.

The two retreats

Guests of the Group EMDR Surf Therapy Retreat in October will experience EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing).

A trained therapist guides people to recall traumatic events while focusing on external stimuli, such as moving the eyes in a specific way or engaging in bilateral tapping.

The Resilience and Burnout Prevention Retreat in November will o er guests a chance to recharge, refocus and build sustainable habits to protect their wellbeing.

Resurface also o ers a range of one-to-one therapy retreats. ●

■ The Saxon Spa is part of the Steyn City mega-lifestyle estate

Elemental haven

The concept for the South African Steyn City Saxon Spa echoes nature's elements, bringing the outdoors inside

Lifestyle mega-estate Steyn City, in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, South Africa has announced the opening of a new spa.

Steyn City is the sister property of Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa in Johannesburg – a member of the Leading Hotels of the World. Both are owned by the Steyn family and the estate is a legacy project developed by the late South African billionaire Douw Steyn.

Steyn City is a 760-residence wellness destination that has an 18-hole Nicklaus-design golf course and a 300-metre long lagoon pool for watersports. Construction on all the apartments is due in Q4 of 2026. The Steyn City Hotel, by Saxon, opened in October 2024.

Saxon Spa design

A spokesperson for Steyn City told Spa Business exclusively that the

investment for the new 1,400sq m two-floor Saxon Spa at Steyn City was around R56 million (US$3.2 million, €2.7 million, £2.4 million).

The spa has been designed by Amanda Elliott and Matthew Fogg of Design Collective. Echoing nature’s elements, with soft curves and a palette of warm whites and greens, the concept is about bringing the outdoors inside.

Water, fire, earth and air are referenced in the design which

provides space for relaxation, peace and presence of mind.

South African craftsmanship is evident throughout the interiors. Chandeliers made from recycled glass by local environmental artist Stephen Pikus hang in each of the nine treatment rooms.

Therapeutic facilities

The hydrotherpy circuit includes a plunge bath, sauna, steamroom and heated vitality pools.

The Saxon Spa will be open to Steyn City residents, hotel guests and day spa visitors

The outdoor deck, with crystals positioned throughout, o ers a space for yoga sessions and programming. There is also a juice bar that serves snacks and light meals to complement the wellness journey.

In addition to the spa's own skincare products, treatment partners include Subtle Energies, Ling New York, Dr Levy Switzerland and Babor. The spa is also o ering vibracoustic wellness journeys, provided using equipment by the Gharieni Group. ●

A critical health issue spa business opinion

Restorative sleep is a necessity, not a luxury – without it no other aspect of wellness can truly be sustained
Dr

Inmaculada Rodríguez-Ulecia, scientific coordinator for the Tempo programme

■ The resort has been chosen for its peaceful atmosphere

Dr Inmaculada Rodríguez-Ulecia explains how her work is tackling poor sleep

The impact of insufficient or poorquality sleep is profound and affects multiple systems in the body.

A 2021 study found people who sleep less than six hours per night from the age of 50 have up to a 30 per cent higher risk of developing cognitive decline or dementia over the following 25 years. The risk of developing or dying from coronary heart disease increases by 48 per cent and the risk of stroke by 15 per cent.

A 2017 review also linked poor sleep to disruption in hormones such as increased ghrelin (the hunger hormone) and decreased leptin (the satiety hormone). These disruptions were linked to weight gain and insulin resistance.

Poor sleep doesn’t just exhaust us – it makes us ill. The body enters a state of chronic alertness, with elevated cortisol levels, weakening physical and emotional recovery.

A global challenge

Based on recent epidemiological data, up to 40 per cent of the global population experiences some form of sleep disorder during their lifetime. In many industrialised countries, 30–35 per cent of adults sleep fewer than six hours per night and sleep problems have increased significantly over the past decade. We live in a society that constantly disrupts our natural biological rhythms. Exposure to screens and artificial light at night, chronic stress, irregular schedules and sedentary habits all contribute to sleep deterioration.

■ Non-invasive testing will take place throughout the retreat

Poor eating habits, and a lack of relaxing routines before bed compound the problem.

There is also a cultural belief that equates productivity with success, glorifying sleep deprivation as a badge of honour – when in reality, it is a silent threat to our health.

Scientific Tempo retreat

In response to this crisis, I'm leading a scientific sleep retreat programme called Tempo at the Salobre Resort on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria in partnership with Salobre. The programme will transform how people rest, providing Tempo retreat guests with medical assessments, tailored sleep improvement plans, nutritionist-designed meals, mindfulness routines, movement sessions and spa treatments. Guest rooms will feature technology such as light

Poor sleep doesn't just exhaust us, it makes us ill – and we are facing a global rest crisis

waking alarms, air purifiers and attendees will wear sleep-tracking devices to inform the study. Postretreat support will also be available to participants.

I'm working with a team at Universidad Fernando Pessoa Canarias to assess the programme’s outcomes, ensuring our methods and results are rooted in measurable, scientific parameters – contributing to a broader understanding of sleep science and rest. ● Dr Inmaculada Rodríguez Ulecia is a Spanish clinical neurophysiologist and specialist in sleep medicine, known for her work in diagnosing and treating complex neurological sleep disorders.
