Canada ranks top 10 in wellness growth

Canada’s wellness economy is one of the fastest-growing globally, with a 7.3 per cent growth rate from 2019 to 2023, reaching US$143.8 billion, according to the Global Wellness Institute’s latest report. The country now ranks as the eighth-largest wellness economy, surpassing its pre-pandemic value by 33 per cent. Despite a dip in 2020, the sector rebounded steadily, reaching US$118.8 billion in 2021 and US$134.4 billion in 2022.

The report breaks down key segments, many of which rank in COUNTRY FOCUS

MEN'S HEALTH

Health clubs can help tackle male suicide

The UK’s male suicide rate is at its highest since 1999, with men significantly less likely to seek help than women.

In 2023, around 17 in 100,000 men died by suicide, compared to 6 in 100,000 women. Loneliness is also more prevalent among men, worsening with age.

To tackle this, the University of Sunderland and Space North East hosted a public lecture on male mental health. Psychologists discussed suicide rates, masculinity, social isolation, and the rise of incel culture, calling for better support. The university is also

the global top ten, including Healthy Eating, Personal Care, Physical Activity, and Mental Wellness. The findings highlight Canada’s expanding wellness landscape and its growing global competitiveness.

■ Canada’s wellness economy soars globally researching local mental health initiatives to improve interventions. Health clubs already support mental wellbeing through exercise, which boosts mood and confidence while providing social interaction. However, the sector must do more to engage inactive men. By empowering fitness professionals to talk about mental health and signpost support services, gyms could become key players in suicide prevention efforts.
