spa business insights

From feedback to future After surveying thousands of consumers, Shane Evans explains why and how the Massage Heights franchise is rebranding to include wellness technologies – and how a 44 per cent member conversion rate validates the shift

O

ver the past two years, the wellness landscape has transformed. Consumers have shifted from treating wellness as a luxury to seeing it as a non-negotiable part of daily life. They’re thinking proactively about their mental, physical and emotional wellbeing and seeking solutions that fit seamlessly into increasingly busy routines. At the same time, recovery-focused therapies, once reserved for elite athletes, have entered the mainstream. Modalities such as cold therapy, lymphatic drainage, red light and halotherapy are gaining

popularity as tools for maintaining long-term vitality, not just responding to pain. With this shift, guest expectations are dramatically evolving. Today’s consumers want personalisation, integration and purpose. They’re no longer looking for single services – they want curated wellness journeys and environments that support stress relief, recovery, resilience and emotional clarity. They expect a brand to help them navigate options, understand what’s right for them and chart a clear path toward feeling better. These insights were central to our decision to evolve Massage Heights into Heights Wellness Retreat. Guests told us they wanted a complete, accessible wellness ecosystem. They want one trusted home where massage, skincare, skin recovery therapies and emotional restoration come together.

People don’t want single-service destinations any more

In response, we designed our Retreat model to offer multiple modalities, expanded our membership pathways and crafted intentional environments to support mind-body reset. Our brand language now reflects rise, restoration and empowerment, what today’s consumer seeks most and – judging by the insights we’ve collated – what they’ll continue to demand. Through all of this, our core belief remains unchanged: everyone deserves to feel better.

What consumer research did you do? The rebrand to Heights Wellness Retreat was very intentional and rooted in real Spa Business Issue 508 ©Cybertrek Ltd 2026

consumer insight. We’ve spent the last two years listening closely. We surveyed thousands of guests and members and, just as importantly, consumers beyond our current community to understand where the wellness category is heading. One of the clearest themes we saw was that people don’t want single-service destinations any more. They want a place where they can recover, relax and take care of their whole wellbeing. In fact, more than 60 per cent of our members told us they were already going to other businesses for additional wellness and recovery services. www.spabusiness.com

We also saw a major shift in younger consumers, who prefer holistic, multi-modality wellness experiences over traditional spas. That feedback, combined with broader industry data, confirmed that we needed to evolve.

■ Vibroacoustics:

Massage Heights was built on the foundation of therapeutic massage and skincare services, which remain integral to the brand today. Heights Wellness Retreat expands on that, integrating a broad range of wellness technologies including cryotherapy, red light therapy, halotherapy, lymphatic drainage, infrared sauna, vibroacoustic therapy and guided meditation. New spaces include The Well, a central gathering point to encourage a sense of community; The Ascension Circuit, a zone featuring the new wellness technologies; The Drift Lounge for before and after services and The Oasis, a calm, minimalist treatment area for massage and skincare.

What are the price points? Wellness technology services typically start at a lower price point – ranging between US$40-US$90 (€35-78, £30-£67) – than traditional services, such a 60-minute massage or facials that starts at US$100 (€95, £82). We also have new membership pathways which incorporate a combination of hands-on services and wellness technologies, that start at approximately US$100 a month. 10

HEIGHTS WELLNESS RETREAT

What’s the new offering?

Will all franchises be required to rebrand? All new franchise locations opening in 2026 and beyond will launch under the Heights Wellness Retreat model. There are three sites currently open and we’re expecting another three soon. We have more than 100 existing franchises across the US and Canada and 25 of those are converting to the retreat model. The idea is for all existing franchise owners to transition on a thoughtful, phased timeline. The goal is to roll this out in a way that protects their investment and sets them up for success. We’re not asking franchisees to rebrand overnight. We’re aligning the transition with their natural refresh and remodel cycles, which minimises additional cost. Our corporate head office is supporting them with creative assets, design guidance and the tools needed to make the shift as seamless as possible. ©Cybertrek Ltd 2026 Spa Business Issue 508

The new-look franchises have zones for a range of wellness modalities

The demand for transformative wellness is real Every location is a little different, so the investment can vary, but the intent is the same across the system: move into this new brand in a way that makes financial sense for each owner.

What has been your customers’ response to the new offering? I’m particularly proud of the performance at Porter Ranch, our first Heights Wellness Retreat that opened in November 2025. We achieved a 44 per cent consultationto-member conversion rate in our first month, which is nearly double the industry standard. The average figure has settled at 29.9 per cent. We’re seeing guests immediately embrace our holistic model, booking not just massage but wellness technology sessions. There Spa Business Issue 508 ©Cybertrek Ltd 2026

is strong evidence that the demand for transformative wellness is real and it validates everything we’ve built: the training, the systems and the brand positioning. This is what happens when you combine a proven franchise model with a movement people actually want to be part of.

Has the franchise price changed with the new concept? Yes, the investment range for new franchisees has been updated to reflect the expanded model, because it includes multiple modalities, an elevated guest experience and additional revenue opportunities. The updated model better reflects where the wellness industry is going and the level of experience we’re committed to delivering for our guests and franchise partners. ● www.spabusiness.com

Sauna Theatre sparks joy Scotland’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival is hosting a modular sauna theatre, with aufguss performances accompanied by DJ sets, literary interpretations and comedy sets

T

IAN GEORGESON

he hottest venue at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival, UK, is the Sauna Theatre, a 90sq m modular sauna that hosts nine different immersive sessions every day from 9.00am to 11.00pm throughout August. Erected in the nation’s endless rain in the car park of the Summerhall Arts venue, the 80-person sauna’s entertainment programme includes a mixture of theatre, literature, music and aufguss. Theatre director James Grieve and stage and costume designer Lucy Osborne established Sauna Sessions Art Club after working together for 20 years making shows. Grieve explained the reasons for developing this experience to Spa Business: “Sauna is really good for you. We know that and there are lots of studies to prove it. Art and culture

is also really good for you. Stimulating your mind by listening, watching, laughing and learning helps you be healthy and happy. We think the combination of heat and art might just double the benefit and double the joy. “Good theatre sends you back out into the world a different person from the one who arrived, and this is our hope for Sauna Theatre. That great artists can harness delicious heat to take us on magical journeys and leave us surprised, delighted and changed.”

The design The sauna was designed by Osborne, on behalf of Studio Three Sixty and it was manufactured by ARN Design. The sauna timber was supplied by Sydenham’s Timber in Glastonbury, UK. While the sauna itself measures roughly 90sq m, it sits on an external structure

This platform, which has an octagonal canopy, measures 14.5 metres in both length and width to provide external areas for relaxation and a small food and beverage offering. Within the sauna are three central 43Kw EOS Mega S HD stoves set to a maximum of 87 degrees Celsius. These have been supplied by EOS in partnership with Your Leisure. Architectural lighting and sound design are central to the Sauna Theatre’s offering and professionals with large-scale West End and international production experience have worked on the project. Richard Williamson has developed the lighting system, using downlight and LED strip lighting from EOS as well as six moving head lights hired from Cardiff-based Stage Lighting Services. The sound system and soundscapes played throughout the different experiences have been designed by Dan Samson, with equipment sourced from AquaSound and Stage Sound Services.

The sound and lighting are controlled from a booth with a window that looks into the sauna. The cold showers are by Nomadic Washrooms with water from Prestex, while the cold plunge was supplied by Therme Bucharest.

THE HURLINGHAM CLUB

The Hurlingham Club is upgrading its fitness offering

ELEVATING FITNESS

M

The Hurlingham Club has paired performance with connectivity in partnership with Matrix fitness

atrix Fitness has completed a new cardio installation at the prestigious Hurlingham Club, creating a modern training environment that meets member expectations while integrating with the club’s existing EGYM digital ecosystem. The project included the installation of Matrix’s premium Onyx smart cardio line, supporting the club’s commitment to maintaining high fitness standards. The upgrade was driven by a need to improve reliability, refresh the gym’s aesthetic and keep pace with evolving technology and member expectations. With limited spare equipment available, minimising downtime and ensuring fast service response times were also key priorities. “After many years of reliable use, our previous equipment was beginning to look tired and required more frequent maintenance,” says Lara Bunting,

head of swimming and fitness. “We wanted a premium aesthetic alongside the technology and reliability our members expect. The Onyx range delivered exactly that, and integration with our existing EGYM system was vital.” Space efficiency was also important and with all cardio equipment located on the first floor, machine footprint played a crucial role. Matrix’s compact designs allowed the club to maintain a familiar layout while maximising space. The installation was managed to minimise disruption, with Matrix coordinating the removal and installation within a tightly controlled timeframe so the facility could remain operational. “The extraction and installation were seamless,” Bunting says. “The logistics were handled extremely well, and the timescale was adhered to. Bridget Kirwan, our Matrix Fitness account manager, provided excellent support.” Members have responded positively since completion in September 2025, particularly to the enhanced digital interface, improved displays and access to personal entertainment platforms such as Netflix. Usage remains strong, with equipment frequently in use during peak periods. A rear-entry cross trainer has also improved spatial flow, making the area feel more open. Kirwan, who is regional area manager at Matrix Fitness, said: “The club has incredibly high standards and we’re delighted to deliver a solution that meets both aesthetic and operational needs.” The club is now exploring further enhancements, reinforcing how thoughtful design and integration can elevate premium fitness environments. l More: matrixfitness.co.uk www.spabusiness.com
