The Thai Spa Association has outlined plans to boost its wellness economy ranking within the Asia Pacific region from ninth place to within the top five by 2030.
According to the Global Wellness Institute (GWI), Thailand’s wellness economy reached US$42.7 billion (€36.5 billion, £33.3 billion) in 2024. Wellness tourism spending within the nation reached US$14 billion (€12 billion, £10.9 billion) –representing 36.4 per cent annual growth from 2023-2024.
Sunai Wachirawarakarn, president, Thai Spa Association, said: “Thailand’s ambition is not only to grow the size of its wellness economy. It is to create a country where wellness becomes more meaningful – where visitors feel genuinely cared for, where the
people who provide that care are also valued, and where communities share in the opportunities created.”
The Thai Spa Association will collaborate with a variety of institutions around the country to boost its wellness reputation.
The ambition is to create a country where

Walsh replaces Todd Leff, who was acting as interim CEO and chair. Leff will remain chair of the board.
Walsh has left her role as interim CEO of consumer franchise brand Subway to join Hand and Stone. For Subway, she worked on the global profitability and expansion of the company, building on the work she did as president of Subway’s MENA region – where she oversaw 6,000 franchise locations. Hand and Stone already has such a strong foundation. I'm excited to build on that by continuing to evolve our services, enhance our membership model and give more consumers an accessible place to go when they need to escape stress and just relax.”

Sheri Rosenthal shares WTA's six retreat principles
The Wellness Tourism Association (WTA) has published a non-regulatory global industry framework designed to ensure the retreat market offers responsible experiences.
The Six Principles for Responsible Retreats have been created to provide a shared reference point to help strengthen transparency, consistency and trust across the industry.
All companies and organisations involved in offering retreats are being encouraged by the WTA to review, adopt and share the principles.
Dr Sheri Rosenthal, WTA retreat committee chair, told Spa Business: "The Six Principles for Responsible Retreats are needed because the retreat marketplace has grown quickly, but the shared understanding of what makes a retreat responsible, ethical and professionally held has not always kept pace. Without clear principles, the market can become confusing for everyone involved."

When clients feel their experience is more complex than the framework they're offered, trust begins to fade
Johanna Bjurstrom, holistic skincare expert and educator
Consumers want more
Johanna
Bjurstrom says spas ignoring guests' lifestyles can't deliver top results
■ Clients understand their skin is affected by more than products and treatments
Something fundamental has shifted in the way clients relate to their skin. Today, they arrive with a deeper awareness. They notice patterns. They see how stress affects flare-ups, how food choices influence inflammation, how digestion, hormones, and emotional load show up on the skin. They no longer view skin issues as isolated problems, but as signals from the body as a whole and they expect us, as professionals, to understand this perspective. This change matters.
Holistic approach
Clients are more informed, more conscious, and more connected to their bodies than ever before. Many already understand that what happens on the inside is reflected on the outside. They are looking for guidance that acknowledges this connection – not just treatments that address what's visible on the surface.
■ Clients expect spas to offer holistic advice and experiences
In other health-related fields, this holistic understanding is already well established. Functional medicine, nutrition, and lifestylebased approaches increasingly work with patterns, root causes and system-wide balance. The whole person is considered, not just the symptom. This disconnect is becoming a risk.
Trust must be nurtured
When clients feel their experience is more complex than the framework they're offered, trust begins to fade. They start looking elsewhere. Not because treatments lack value, but because understanding is missing.
Skin today is profoundly influenced by modern life. Chronic stress affects hormones and the nervous system. Food choices shape inflammation and gut balance. The gut communicates directly with the immune system and the brain. All of this is reflected
Within large parts of the spa and skin industry, we still tend to focus primarily on the surface
in the skin. Ignoring these connections does not make them disappear. It simply limits our ability to support long-term results.
The future
The future of skin and spa care is already here. It belongs to professionals who understand the whole picture, recognise patterns and internal load, and are willing to expand their perspective beyond the surface.
Those practitioners will not lose clients – they will build deeper trust and longterm loyalty. Our clients have already moved forward. The question is whether the industry is ready to follow. ●

Spas and Wellness has created a wellness concept for AI firm Midjourney with technology that could reduce pressure on global healthcare systems
■ TLee Spas and Wellness designed the concept with Basalt and Rapt studio
Midjourney Spa is an innovative blend of what it means to be human in an AI-driven world
Jeanine Allpress-Cliffe, president and MD of TLee Spas and Wellness
TLee Spas and Wellness has revealed the design for a wellness destination concept for AI company Midjourney that blurs the boundaries between spa, fitness and preventative healthcare, with the goal of improving public health.
Midjourney is a generative AI research company that offers its users a way to create detailed stylised images and videos from text descriptions via a chat-style online platform. It's a community-backed research lab without investors.
The 24,000sq ft flagship Midjourney Spa is due to open at the end of 2027 at 300 Grant Avenue in San Francisco, US. The company plans to scale the concept to more cities in 2028.
Spread across four floors, the first destination will offer classic spa experiences such as a thermal circuit with hot tubs, saunas and plunge pools as well as other amenities, including a gym, a multi-purpose live music room, group tea tastings and touchless longevity treatments.
Midjourney Scanners
Midjourney has expanded into healthcare, with the creation of its Midjourney Medical division.
Working with the Midjourney team allowed us to think beyond traditional boundaries and blur the lines between technology, AI and the spa experience
Jeanine Allpress-Cliffe, president and MD, TLee Spas and Wellness
This division is creating a body scanner that is expected to provide fast 3D ultrasonic CT imaging within a wellness setting.
At the centre of the new facility will be nine of these full-body Midjourney Scanners that have been developed in-house.
Guests will walk onto a platform in shallow water, which descends like a lift into a private pool to be scanned by rings of underwater sensors.
The devices will provide noninvasive ultrasound imaging of the body using sound waves to visualise organ and tissue segmentation plus structural imaging of the torso and legs. The 3D mapping will be accurate to a fraction of a milimetre, but Midjourney wants the scanning to take no more than 60 seconds. The technology requires enormous computational power, producing terabytes of data each second.
The aim is to help guests track changes in their bodies over time and encourage them to adopt preventative behaviours to improve their health. By using the scanners regularly, they will be able to build a library of data about their health.
The facility will be targeted at the public and while the pricing is still to be decided, Midjourney plans
to make its facilities affordable.
Midjourney believes that with enough early imaging, the world could avoid 30 per cent of premature deaths and 50 per cent of all healthcare costs.
TLee Spas collaborated with Blue Lagoon creators at Basalt, as well as architects Rapt Studio to create a blended environment. ●

Gran Hotel Taoro in northern Tenerife, Spain, has completed the final phase of its three-year renovation with the debut of its Sandára Wellness Centre.
The 199-key property originally opened in 1890 and it has been transformed into a five-star retreat by the Island Council of Tenerife (Cabildo Insular de Tenerife).
The new Sandára Wellness Centre is a holistic spa with panoramic views over the Orotava Valley. The architecture for the centre was designed by Virgilio Gutiérrez and Eustaquio Martínez, the designers in charge of the hotel’s full transformation. Interiors are by Dishot.

About the spa
There are three single treatment rooms and two double rooms. Treatment beds were supplied by Nilo Spa Design.
There is also a sauna and Turkish bath, supplied by Klafs, as well as experience showers that overlook the hotel’s botanical gardens. The relaxation area opens onto views of the landscape and a bespoke mural by Canarian artist Ione Domínguez roots the spa in its island location.
There is also a space for outdoor movement classes, such as yoga and a fitness suite with equipment by Technogym. The spa’s management software is Siana by Spalopia.
Mari Carmen Hernandez, Sandara Wellness Centre Director, told Spa Business: “Rather than functioning as a standalone facility, the centre has been conceived as an extension of the hotel’s relationship with northern Tenerife: its landscape, climate and pace of life. Drawing on the island’s volcanic origins, the design and treatments work together to create a deeply sensory experience.”

Mayah
launches its debut bodycare collection
Mayah, a new personal care brand developed to be safe for mothers and mothersto-be, has debuted its first collection of three bodycare products.
The new brand, founded by Jessica Smith and Rebecca Heywood, is born from lived experience –navigating miscarriages and the challenges of trying to conceive. After finding a split between mother-and-baby products and generic bodycare, the founders created the company to redefine how mothers are seen – rather than solely focusing on the baby.
Smith said: "For years, maternal imagery has defaulted to soft, poetic and slightly saintly – beautiful, but flattening. What's been missing is space for the confident, provocative, directional side of motherhood –the side where a woman's sense of self becomes bigger, bolder and more defined, not smaller." The founders spoke to more than 300 mothers and mothers-to-be before developing the formulas that contain clinically studied actives.
■ Mayah’s products have been created to reduce the guesswork for women looking for motherhood-safe products
Heywood said: “From the beginning, we agreed we wouldn’t build Mayah on any assumptions. By listening to hundreds of women and mapping out over 52 of their concerns across every stage of motherhood, we created products that respond to what mothers actually told us they needed in their everyday lives.” MORE ON spa-kit.net http://lei.sr/Z5e3e

Phytomer strengthens UK and Irish spa market presence
Phytomer, the French marine biotech skincare company, is relaunching its UK and Irish subsidiary business as the brand plans a new chapter of growth in the territory.
The third-generation family-run company, which is led by Tristan Lagarde and Mathilde GédouinLagarde, already has a presence in the UK and Ireland at locations including Old Course Hotel St Andrews, Government House, Stobo Castle and the Royal Yacht Club. Adaptive hydration
Comfort Zone is expanding its science-led hydration portfolio with a new generation of formulas and professional treatments, explains Eve Merinville
As environmental stressors intensify and consumer demand for highperformance skincare grows, hydration has become a critical driver of skin health and treatment efficacy.
Comfort Zone’s Hydramemory innovations take a biomimetic approach, inspired by desert plants, to deliver adaptive, multi-level hydration for both professional and home use. Hydration is increasingly recognised as a fundamental pillar of skin longevity, influencing barrier function, resilience and the visible signs of ageing, yet it remains underutilised in many treatment protocols. Responding to this gap, Comfort Zone’s Hydramemory range has been developed to support the skin’s adaptive hydration mechanisms.
Inspired by the survival strategies of desert plants, the formulation combines macro hyaluronic acid with prickly pear extract from regenerative organic agriculture. Clinically tested results show an immediate hydration boost of up to 70 per cent and a tenfold strengthening of the skin barrier, supporting improved moisture retention in both extreme and everyday conditions.
“The secret to healthy skin is hydration and by mimicking nature’s textures, we can improve its ability to retain moisture”
Eve Merinville, Comfort Zone R&D Excellence and Innovation Director

A POWERFUL RANGE OF PRODUCTS
The new Hydramemory Hydra Plump facial treatment delivers an intensive plumping moisturising experience through professionalgrade formulas and the power of touch inspired by Vietnamese techniques. Clinical evaluations report that 100 per cent of users felt improved hydration, 95 per cent observed increased glow and plumpness and 85 per cent reported a reduction in superficial wrinkles after a single treatment. With a multi-format approach to hydration, the range also includes Hyalu Daily 15 masks for instant radiance, reusable silicone eye patches designed to enhance active absorption while reducing waste and a de-puff eye cream, formulated with caffeine and peptides for visible fatigue reduction.
Completing the collection, Hydramemory Hybrid Glow SPF30 offers three-in-one – daily protection, hydration and radiance – positioning it as a high-performance finishing step for both treatment rooms and retail conversion.
This product is a true beauty ally with a transformative texture that’s lightweight and comfortable. Its silky skin feel makes it perfect for everyday use.
SPF30 protection helps defend the skin against the damage caused by daily sun exposure, supporting a youthful and healthy-looking
appearance, while innovative encapsulated, colour-adaptive pigments activate on application, instantly enhancing radiance and creating a natural ‘bonne mine’ effect, or healthy glow.
The white formula transforms into colour, blending seamlessly with the complexion for an even, naturallooking finish. It’s made with 69 per cent ingredients of natural origin and has been enriched with prickly pear extract to help support the skin barrier, while hyaluronic acid delivers deep hydration, leaving the skin feeling fresh, soft and visibly healthier.
PROTECTED, RADIANT, HYDRATED
Together, the Hydramemory system reflects a shift in professional skincare: delivering hydration as a strategic tool for skin longevity, barrier health and visible performance outcomes. l More: www.comfortzoneskin.com
