Thursday 1 January (this day copied from 1902 diary) Lennie & Lin to shoot at Paddockhurst, Sir Weetman Pearson’s. Maud Lin, Lennie & self dine at Nymans & Mr Marriott. Perfectly glorious day.

Grace Fraser left. Tabbie’s big ball for Gwen’s coming out. V. pleasant dinner at Nymans, Mr Marriott with us.

Friday 2 January Vy wet day, warm. Otley returned to town. Servants dance tonight, Lennie sleeping night in London. Great success, about 40 danced in kitchen. Laundry beautifully arranged with 2 long tables & names on each place, most daintily done. Mr M. & Maud & I went down.

Saturday 3 January Wet & fine alternately. Mabel Wallace came in time for lunch. I breakfasted in Maud’s bed, slept with her. Went with Mr Marriott, Mabel & Lin for vy dirty walk after luncheon. Lennie came down. Had seen Roy who had only slept one night at Pyt! Sang & played evg.

Sunday 4 January Lovely morg, wet later. We all lunched at Lady Pearson’s. Huge party there. Lin, Mr M. & Lennie walked, we drove. Mabel ring fr. plum pudding, I got thimble! Went over house, like huge Hotel. Played bowls in Winter Garden. Played games evg.

Monday 5 January Very wet day. Lin to town for the Madeleine Stanley wedding to Mr Broderick. Lin returns tonight. Lennie & Mr Marriott off by early train, not returning until Wed. Lin returned evg. Maud, Mabel & I lunch at Mrs Fox Adams. Most charming house & exquisite little luncheon beautifully served. Soup in little green jars, prawn patties, cutlets with cut vegts & 3

Tuesday 6 January Warm & wet. Lady Pearson, Mrs Kinnell, Miss K & Miss P to luncheon.

Darling M. worried about town house, Nonie ill again at Glouc. Ter. Maud, Mabel & self to tea with Mrs Tate. Daisy & husband there. Lin walked over & Mr Wignall walked back with him. Lennie not here, coming tomorrow.

Wednesday 7 January Lady Luscombe’s dance, Mabel & Maud went, young Pearson v. attentive. Muriel over for lunch & remaining night. Lennie, Roy & Nipper to some dance at Cuckfield, Sussex Volunteer. They slept here but did not see them, left early. Muriel & I alone evg.

Thursday 8 January Roy & Nipper off by first train. Mrs Messel’s luncheon party. Maud went with Mr & Mrs Tate & fr. there to Lady Pearson’s children’s party & enjoyed it. Mabel left. Lin & Lennie shooting at Paddockhurst. Lin came down early train & returned to town after dinner. Nonie came down to tea with me. Walked for hour New Road. Announcement of Mr J. Fagan’s deat, suddenly at Florence.

Friday 9 January Mr Messel’s birthday. Babies went over to see him morg. Fine & rained after. Maud & I went over to Nymans 3 o’c, stayed to tea. Lennie shooting there, fetched him back. We 3 to dinner alone.

Saturday 10 January Mr Venning came to stay till Monday & Roy & Mabel W. Mr & Miss Pearson to dinner. Harold, Mr Davson, Hilda, Mrs Elliott & Miss Hale came after. Delightful dinner & dance after, great success. Geoff Conrad to lunch & tea, left at 6 o’c.

Sunday 11 January V. cold & snow. All to Church but Lin, Roy & self. Mr & Miss Pearson took Mabel & Mr V. in their motor for drive. Lin, Lennie & Roy for walk Nymans. Maud & I walked some way with them. Played games evg.

Monday 12 January Mabel left. Lennie, Roy & Mr Venning left by first train. Roy looking seedy. Lennie came by late train only in time for dinner. Canon & Miss Mead dined here, games. Maud & I called on Mrs Beightmier, Kay Shuttleworth, Kenderdine, & Mrs Steincopff where we had tea. Frost & ice. V. cold but warm in house. Dear Lin here.

Tuesday 13 January Sent cheque for £290 to Glyn Mills Currie & Co for full payment of allotted £300 in B.A.Gt. southern Rly 4%. Walked 5 miles with Lin & not tired. Miss Meads to tea. Lennie & Nipper drilling, arrived only at 10.15, v. tired. Maud, Lin & self dined alone. Nipper slept here.

Wednesday 14 January Lovely day v. cold. Lin to London by 10. train. Letters fr. Fritz, Geoff & Mr Richardson. Miss Cussans arrived.

Thursday 15 January X. Pay £140 for 1st call on new B.A.Gt S 4% deb. 2,000,000 at £105for 100 stock, paid £290 being amount in full. Lady Romer at home. Lovely day bitterly cold. Drove with Maud in brougham to Lady Pearson’s, Lady Luscombe’s, both out. Walked alone with the 3 dogs. Quiet evg. Lennie again better.

Friday 16 January Lovely day, bitterly cold in London by Lin’s letter as cold as 1895, huge icicles. House here v. cozy & warm. Lennie returned fr. city, better. Miss C. still here but leaves tomorrow. Had walk with Nonie afternoon.

Saturday 17 January V, cold, skating. Lennie down by 4 o’c & off to Lake, Nurse M, Nonie & I with him. Beginning to rain & thaw set in. Lennie skated a little. Mr Childers, Lin & Roy arrived by 5 train. Pleasant evg. Mr C. older than most of Lennie’s friends. Maud to Lady Beatrice Rawsons with Muriel.

Great anxiety, she did not return until 9.45.

Sunday 18 January Lin & Roy for walk. Lennie, Mr C. & Maud to Nymans 12 o’c to wish Mr & Mrs Messel bon voyage. They go to London this afternoon & leave for Cannes on Tuesday. Lennie, Lin, Mr C. & Roy for long walk after luncheon. M. & self doing gardening list drawing room. Pleasant evg.

New patience by Mr C. Music.

Monday 19 January Damp wet day. Lennie Roy & Mr C. up to London. Nonie painting with Lin! Geoff Conrad goes to Stafford Terrace until Friday.

Tuesday 20 January Returned with Lin from Balcombe after a delightful month’s absence.

Arrived 6.30. Found Geoff here staying. Dined 7.30 & to Olympia.

Introduced to Buffalo Bill, Col Cody & nice niece, American. Had box. V. tired. Left darling Maud with cold!

Wednesday 21 January V. dark. 2 letters fr. darling Maud. Out morg. Called on Miss Rose Innes, out. Geoff & I lunched 1 o’c. Fetched Jim Galbraith & went to Garrick Theatre “Water Babies” fairly good. Lin met us. Saw Lady Maitland.

Geoff, Roy & self alone to dinner.

Thursday 22 January Dull & damp. For walk & shopping morg. Rested afternoon. Geoff in for tea. Roy home 5.30 looking v. tired. We dined at 7 & went in cab to 6

Friday 23 January Freda out afternoon. Morg. walked with Geoff, met Mabel Wallace.

Flowers fr. darling Maud. Fine day. Geoff left after luncheon for Brighton. Called at 4 o’c on Lady Clarke, Lady Lockwood, Lady de la Rue, Mrs Galbraith & Miss Thomson. Saw Coupé, tea in Hall & lovely house.

Saturday 24 January Wet & dull. Gompel 10.30. Matinée with Lin “Admirable Crichton” Excellent piece. Unable to walk, v. wet. Read on return & slept. Quiet evg. Worked out with Roy Mr Childer’s Patience successfully after 4 tries.

Sunday 25 January Walked with Lin, met Lady Hickman. V. dull & windy. Lin to club after lunch. No one called. Quiet evg. Patience! Roy’s cold tiresome & makes him so too! Pity.

Monday 26 January Ada Sp. & Hilda called. Maud & Lennie dine here 8 o’c. Walked with Lin morg. to lady photographer Brompton Sqre & back. Called at 4 on Maud, not yet arrived. Saw Nana & Mrs Partridge. Sat some time talking to them both. Mrs P. better. Whiteley about coffee pot. Quiet evg. V. delightful having Maud back. Roy’s cold bad.

Tuesday 27 January Asked Florrie Blair to stay week, comes Thursday. Walked to top of Row with Lin, met brougham. Saw & had long talk with Cap. Mathews. Lin lunching with Mr (blank) chief of Police. Mrs Adams, F. & May Nembhard, Mrs J. Aird, Mrs Gill & Miss Rose Innes called. Roy’s cold v. bad.

Wednesday 28 January Tea with Maud at Lady Hickman’s. Walk at 12 with Lin & Mrs Gill. Called at Police Sta. on return about street music. Roy in after I had finished dinner! Only E. & F. in, Muriel out. Made calls with Maud on Mrs Kinnell, Gilberts, Palmer & Lady Hickman.

Thursday 29 January Lady Clarke’s dinner, Lin only. Met Sir C. & Lady Clarke, Ewan Smith, Mr Newman. F. Blair arrived 5.50. Catastrophy at night, E. out & our dinner cooked by Muriel & not served until 8.30. Orton came evg to see Roy, fears influenza.

Friday 30 January Orton came to see Roy. Roy down after lunch. Florrie & self to see Maud, v. pale & not looking so well. Dinner ¼ to 10.

Saturday 31 January Roy in bed. Orton called morning, says he must go to Brighton first, going tomorrow to Con’s. Out morg. Left securities Bank. X. B.A. Gt Southern £300 4% debs. To “Othello” with Florrie, bus there carriage back. Sausages. Roy vy. tiresome makes me quite ill with his arguing. V. tired & ear ache.

Sunday 1 February Very seedy ear ache & head ache. In bed to breakfast. Roy left for Brighton by 12 o’c train. Lin & self for walk 12.30, blizzard. Lovely later cold wind. Florrie to Church. Col. Leigh called. Maud Paxton, Miss Rose Innes, Spencer & Mr Paxton called.

Monday 2 February L’allemand s’en va. Walked morning. Drove at 4 called on Mrs Jackson, Lady Lawrence Miss Lawrence, Mrs Blair, Mrs Reeves, in, Lady Bergne & to Maud’s, arrived late fr. Balcombe.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1903 Tuesday 3 February Florrie & I walked to Midge’s, returns fr Gatley today. Took flowers for her table. Lady Lockwood, Mrs E. Pollock, Mrs Gilbert & Helene Zimmerman called. Maud & Lennie to dinner.

Wednesday 4 February Walked morg to & fr. Woollands with F. Blair. Drove at 4 called on Lady Burnand, out, & May Nembhards, Brooks. Midge & Dora & Maud there.

Also Mr & Mrs Tipping. F. & self dined alone. Freda out.

Thursday 5 February Walked to Sloane St. to get toys, 4/6. Florrie Blair left for Aunt Linda’s morg. Dora came & sat to Lin & remained to luncheon. I drove with her at 3 o’c Woollands, Marshalls. Met Mrs Tate, & to Midge’s. Met Miss Hanbury Ld Bateman’s cousin. On to Maud’s & home. Dined 8.30. Mrs Kinnell called.

Friday 6 February Mrs English at home. In bed to breakfast. Lovely day. Miss Gill called & darling M. with Grace Fraser. Gillie’s brother at Hanwell, dangerous lunatic! awful, & her sister about same. Maud took G.F. to Mrs English.

Saturday 7 February In bed till 12. Roy returned fr. Brighton with Tabbie & H. Lunched here & went with them to Pyt by 3 train. Con came to stay, only arrived in time for dinner. Maud dined here. Lin & Lennie dined with Mons. de Ayala, Carlton. Dora joined Lin & self at Apollo “Girl fr. Kays” awfully good.

She drove me home.

Sunday 8 February In bed till 12.30 reading Tolstoi’s “Resurrection” v. strong book. Con to see Effie. Con & Lin in to luncheon. To see Effie after tea. Sp. & Ada called. Con & Lin dined at Maud’s, I too seedy to go. Dora there & Hamilton fetched her.

Monday 9 February In bed till 12 o’c. Read, finished Tolstoi’s book. Drove with Con at 4 to enquire Mrs Armstrong, Welby, English, Tupper, all out. Paid £4.8.0 to Wellers wine peole, leaves still £4.8.0 owing. Con sh’d dine Midge’s, too seedy, dined with Lin & self here. Darling Maud called, away.

Tuesday 10 February Lovely day later, dull morg. Con & self breakfasted in our rooms. He lunched at Mrs English’s. Lin not very well, feels tired & done up. Mrs Tate, Lady de la Rue, Mrs Holland & Ethel, Maud & Miss Cussans & Mary Millais called. Con lunched at Mrs English’s.

Wednesday 11 February Went at 1 o’c to Dr Cumberbatch. Says I am v. weak & bloodless & must go away soon as possible. Had influenza he says which w’d account for my feeling so ill. Mrs Bertie Keith called afternoon. Con & self alone evg.

Freda & Minnie in, E. out, la dernière ne sais bien de la cuisine. Ménage mal quand cuisiniere est sortie.

Thursday 12 February Lovely day. Walked Kensington shop’g. Called at 4 on Mrs E.T. Reed.

Met Lady Reed morg. at Barkers. Called Ada Sp. & Mrs Maclean, both in.

Mrs Watney called. X. Lin dined at Maud’s. Con & self alone dinner.

Muriel out.

Friday 13 February Lovely day. In bed to breakfast. Walked fr. Whiteleys. Pd. Barkers bill £5.1.6. Lin fell fr. bicycle. Con dined with Lin at ¼ to 10 o’c. Packed my clothes. La fille n’aide pas aussi bien que la dernière avec l’emballage.

Saturday 14 February Came to Balcombe by 5 o’c train. Lunched 1 o’c. Con & Lin to matinée of “Monsieur Beaucaire”. Darling Maud met me at Balcombe. Saw Hilda Sp. 10

Sunday 15 February Dinner (blank). Lennie & Maud out together morg & afternoon. I went for walk with Gillie. Lin dined at Langleys. Con waited Staf. Ter. for Roy who returned fr. Pyt.

Monday 16 February Mrs Fletcher Moulton’s dinner 8 o’c. Maud, Lennie & Lin going. I remain Balcombe, too seedy. Walked & saw Maud & Gillie off Balcombe station 12 o’c, & stroll after with Nurse & Baby. Walked afternoon paid 2/6 for advertisement in West Sussex Gazette for Thursday. Little Anne fretful & w’d not stay with me.

Tuesday 17 February Asked Sir C. & Lady Clarke, Lady Weetman Pearson, Mr & Mrs Pirrie, all away. Lovely day. Walkled twice with Babies. Little Anne fretful, teeth.

Colder, frost evening.

Wednesday 18 February Lovely day, frost morg. Colder. Walked to Tailors with Nurse F. about shorten skirt. Little Anne better & less fretful. Lunched, & out again with Babies. Nonie on Camel, the saddle turned round. Saw Miss Mead taking photos of woodman & hut in red road. Met Mr & Mrs Pennythorn, asked me to luncheon & tea, cannot go. Toula goes to Stafford Terrace.

Thursday 19 February Lennie’s birthday. Lin, Roy, F. Walford, Mr Gosling, (illeg) & Eileen Clowes & Mr Brown dined with L. & M. Went for walk morg. stayed in afternoon for Con who did not come. Lovely day, warm & sunny. Four answers to W. Sussex Gazette advertisement.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1903 Lovely day. Went for long walk morg. with little Anne, again afternoon, v. good. Kate took my specks to Cuckfield to be mended. Very quiet peaceful day. Very sunny & warm.

Saturday 21 February Went to meet Lennie & Maud at Sta. with Babies. Saw Ethel English with Mr & Miss Larking on way to Brighton. Nonie boy not quite well, feverish & sick. Very windy, did not go out afternoon. Canon Mead called & Ruth & Muriel fr. Nymans. Lennie to Cuckfield for training. Roy at Mr Kenderdine till Monday, Lin at Mr Hartree’s, Brighton. Toula at Stafford Ter. Unpleasant evg, Lennie worried expenses.

Sunday 22 February Dull & fine Scotch rain.V. annoying, been lovely all the week. Slept very badly, worried over my darling’s expenses. Wish she could manage her own accounts alone. V. pleasant day tho’ wet.

Monday 23 February Returned with Maud fr. Balcombe morg. Toula out to luncheon. Lin ret’nd fr. Brighton, Roy fr. Mrs Kenderdine’s. Lin shot with H.L, clay pigeons.

Tuesday 24 February Walked morg. to Midge’s. Tilda lunched at Maud’s. 2 Miss Laurences, Lady Laurence, Mrs K.L. & May, Mrs Fritz, Mrs Reeve, Mrs P. Simpson & darling Maud came, latter looking sweetly pretty. Roy dined with Tabbie at Coburg & went with her to St James’s after. Slept badly.

Wednesday 25 February Walked to Maud’s & Midge’s with Toula morg. To matinée “Resurrection”. Toula, self, Lin & Dora, Tabs & Bee!!! Maudie met us there, great deal too many. Roy dined Maud’s evg, only Hilda there.

Slept badly.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1903 Thursday 26 February Lovely morg, heavy rain 11.15. I lunch with Tabbie. Walked there with Toula. Midge also there, v. cozy little luncheon together. Midge took me for drive in Victoria, greatly enjoyed it, & brought me home. Went to Mrs Gill’s & tired myself, plain little child. Roy dined at Ham L’s. Maudie dinner party tonight.

Friday 27 February Maudie called morg looking sweet with Mad’lle, leaves for Balcombe afternoon. Toula & self doing pictures etc all morg. M. brought lovely flowers & we called there afternoon, brought away more. Walked across Park coming home. Roy high spirits evg. Toula played Patience with him. Mrs Gill to tea.

Saturday 28 February In morg, working. Rain. To Savoy in Maud’s carriage there & back to see “Princess of Kensington” the stupidest piece I have ever seen. V. pretty girls, music & dancing, piece idiotic & w’d be clever. Roy to drill, & to Balcombe till Monday. Midge & Dora to tea. Sat morning room after. V. tired & nervy. Dickie with us at Savoy.

Sunday 1 March V. windy, fairly fine. Lin unable to go to Calais. Tilda Lin & self walked to Hyde Pk Corner & back. Freda out. Mr Paxton & Con called. Roy at Balcombe. Lin lunched at club.

Monday 2 March Freda after place afternoon. V. wet, heavy rain. Tilda & I walked to Row & back.

Tuesday 3 March Out morg. Mrs Braunstein, Lady Bergne, Mrs Child, Mrs Stephenson & Ruth called, & Mrs E. Holl about Freda’s character, sister in law to our Holls.

Wednesday 4 March Roy & Tilda dined with Dora. I alone to dinner, bed early. Lin, Tilda & self lunched at Rules & to Pantomime after.

Thursday 5 March Babies with Nurse M. to lunch & tea, v. good. Darling Maud came with Nonie. At 4.30 to Mrs Jephson with Toula. Roy in to dinner, out with Conrad after.

Friday 6 March Walked with Toula Sloane St & back. Called at 4.30 on Mrs Agnew, Hilda Messel, Midge, Richards & Florence Walford. Tilda out to tea. Dinner 10 o’c.

Saturday 7 March X. V. wet. Box matinée Criterion. Freda leaves. B. Rice comes. Tilda & self & Lin to Criterion by bus. Saw “A Clean Slate”. V. good & v. amusing. Faites assez bien dîner.

Sunday 8 March Walked to Gloucester Ter, chicks out. M. & L. at Ruth’s. Met Midge & H, walked home with Tilda & self. Roy out to lunch, Lin to Calais. Roy dined Midge’s. Lin Tilda & self. Mrs Galbraith & F. Walford called.

Monday 9 March Lin to luncheon Athenaeum & to Levée after. Maud’s carriage fetched me 3.30 with Nurse M. & Nonie. Called on Mrs Welby, Mrs English & Mrs P. Holland, saw Midge there, & to Maud’s. Large number there & 2 gentlemen. Tilda out alone. V. wet.

Tuesday 10 March Out morg. Florence W. & Ruscam Gingham, Midge & D, Mrs Jephson etc etc called. Maud has dinner party unable to come.

Wednesday 11 March Miss Neaves 4 - 7. To matinée with Lin, Tilda & Dora “Three Little Maids” excellent. Walked to Midge’s & Maud’s, latter in bed resting. Roy out to dinner, Tilda & self alone.

Thursday 12 March Lady Burnand’s dinner 8 o’c. Lin went alone, I too seedy. W.S.Gilbert story of stamps. Walked morg (illeg) fille Allemande ne vaut pas. Walked thro’ Pk home. Met Mrs Tate, Neaves, Spender. Tilda to help Maud after lunch, dinner 10, Langleys, Galbraiths, 4 others. Fetched Toula. Roy out.

Friday 13 March Lovely day. Walked with Toula morning, Grove. Roy dined at Maud’s, I at 7. Toula & Lin dined 9.45. Packed afternoon. Toula helped Maud. Les deux filles très lente & moitié endormies.

Saturday 14 March Left Staf. Ter. 10 o’c Waterloo for Padstow Cornwall with Lin. Arrived 6.15. Little shed like Sta. & terminus. Walked up to Hotel. Comfortable salon & had excellent dinner. Bed early, fire in room & slept well. Colour of soil after passing Exeter deep rich madder, sheep also looked pink & mole hills!!! Huge quarry of slate, also small low baths of slate & huge slabs of slate like grave stones dividing fields, depressing rather. Great dearth of trees in Cornwall, & Devonshire like curate’s egg excellent in parts! Tilda goes away till Tues. Wonder com. les filles ferant!

Sunday 15 March Fine morg. Down 12 o’c & for lovely walk along estuary. Fine dark slaty rocks with quantities of gorse in full bloom. Seaweed of rich yellow & brown & greens. Walked some distance on shore, slippery. Saw 2 men spearing fish! Excellent luncheon, slept & read after. Wrote letters.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1903 Monday 16 March Miss Lawrence’s luncheon party 2 o’c. Cannot go. Lovely day. Left by 12.50 for Camelford & drove in trap fr. there to Tintagel, 8 miles thro’ wild slate rock walls in parts like ruins of old castle. Slate quarry at Delabole. Angel Hotel at Tintagel! No one in it. Lin & self walked down steep decline to ravine & wild rocks & waterfall to see King Arthur’s old walls, all that remains of castle. Caves & rocks v. fine. Back to Hotel for dinner, all most comfortable, fire in room & lovely evg. Good dinner, bed at 9.30.

Tuesday 17 March Wild night & pouring rain & wind which decides us to leave today by 12.50 for home. Letters fr. Maud, Toula etc & Edith Haines asking for fresh reference. We return home by 12.50 fr. Padstow. Long tiring journey, dined 9 o’c Staf. Ter. Toula here fr. her visit, & flowers all arranged in rooms. La fille en haute très desagrèable. Roy out to dinner.

Wednesday 18 March Fine day, v. windy morg. Tilda & self long walk afternoon. Toula Roy & self dined with Maud. Lennie better. Mr & Mrs Messel came in after dinner. Walked to Mrs Clifford’s & had tea there. All out dinner.

Thursday 19 March Walked Midge’s morg. Called 4.30 on Mrs Pirrie, Maclaran, Grantham, Galbraith, Child, all out but Mrs Pirrie. La fille d’en haut des mannières terribles. Rude. Roy out to dinner.

Friday 20 March Tea with Mrs Edgar Holl 4.30. Mare lame, had to go by om & walked home. V. pretty dau. who plays well & young son at Cambridge. Toula out to tea. All in evening.

Sunday 22 March Heavenly day & warm. Dora to dinner. Walked Hyde Pk Corner, home bus. Con & Roy in to luncheon, Lin to Club. Mrs Mackenzie only called, v. amusing.

Monday 23 March Lennie & Maud to dinner. Tilda & self shop’g, & en l’agence après une fille allemande. Maud’s carriage took me to call Midge, & Maud’s to tea, ours fetched me. Mare less lame. V. pleasant evg, Lennie wants us to have their 2 horses & groom! Ellen waited here.

Tuesday 24 March Lovely day. Dora dining here & to Herefordshire after. Very delightful evg. Out morg. Mrs Agnew, Nellie K, Mabel Wallace called. Dined 7 o’c.

Wednesday 25 March Walked alone Madame R. Saw new German Swiss maid, engaged her from Monday. On to lunch with Maud. Lennie, Mad’lle, Miss Elkin, Miss L, dressmaker with F. Walford. Remained to tea. Tilda fetched me & we walked home. Roy to “Rosemary” after our 7 o’c dinner. Mr Blair called.

Thursday 26 March Lovely day. Lin dined at Maud’s dinner of 10, charmingly done. Toula helping her pack etc. I went at 4 o’c, found them v. busy. M. gave me flowers, turkey. Lennie better. They leave tomorrow morg. Toula going early to help Maud again.

Sunday 29 March Lovely day, walked alone with Lin. Toula doing letters celebreties all morg. Maud P, Lin, Toula & self to lunch. Roy out, in late. Mr Paxton called. Midge, Ham & Dora to dinner. Astonished girls waited well, v. pleasant evg. Wire fr. darling Maud at Rome.

Wednesday 1 April Boat Race. Cambridge won. I lunch at Mr Hartree’s 2 o’c. Rain. Mary fallen to pieces again but went out in the wet. Went in cab, returned by om. Roy v. tiresome evg, behaves so oddly. Out after dinner when I had a quiet peaceful read. Letter fr. Rome fr. darling Maud.

Friday 3 April Ethel & Mervyn arrive at Norfolk Hotel fr. their 2 years absence. Flowers 1/6. Morg. to Madame Romeider & pd 7/6 for Margarith Möser. Met Anna D. & walked some distance with her. Called 4 Edgar’s Hotel & Club, out.

Called Mrs Cole, saw her & dau. Took flowers to Norfolk & found E. & Mervyn already there, both well & lively.

Saturday 4 April Shop’g. Took Con & Miss Child to see matinée of “Light that failed”. V. interesting & human. (illeg) not good in it, rest excellent. Mervyn & Ethel to dinner. Lady Flower called.

Sunday 5 April Walked with Lin morg. Came back alone. Ethel & Mervyn here to luncheon, Roy out. Ethel & Mervyn to tea & dinner. Spencer & Ada called. Poor baby Cole died.

Monday 6 April To stores. Called Mrs Lucy, ill. Fetched flower basket fr. Mervyn’s. Saw M. & E. & presents fr. India. Punch dinner. Lin dining out & Roy with Harold Messel. I dined drawing room.

Thursday 9 April Lin & Roy left by 1.40 for Stoke Edith Park. I left for Balcombe by 2.3.

Babies met me both looking blooming, little Anne growing very pretty.

Letter from darling Maud to greet me at B. Mr & Mrs Messel, Hilda & Cap. Gibbes came at 5, all seemed well & cheerful. Cap’t G. tall, heavy good looking. Much colder.

Friday 10 April Lovely day. V. warm in sun, cold out of it. Had 2 long walks with the Babies to enquire after Mrs Tate, away at Sidmouth sea. Letter fr. darling M. Mr Hohler looking v. ill Maudie says. No other letter. Met Miss Mead & a strange looking brother on our way home from the Tates.

Saturday 11 April The Babies went to Nymans for the day. Had quiet peaceful day here, went too quickly. Letters fr. my darling & Lin who seems delighted with Stoke Edith Park. Went as far as water works to met chicks returning fr.

Nymans, got there a large bunch of primroses. Il me parait que les filles ici sortent beauc.

Sunday 12 April Lovely day, much colder. Went to Church 11, stayed communion. V. good sermon. Walked after lunch with the Babies to the waterworks on Nymans road. Tea, & chicks came down after. Letters fr. Lin, Edgar, H. Furrell & Ethel Mervyn. Edgar at Mentone.

Maudie fr. Gigenti from where they go to Syracuse. I returned by 4.21, the old mare taking me to Sta. in 4 wheeled dog cart. Brougham met me Victoria. Met Mr Molesworth who secured brougham, great crowd Sta. Lin dined Sir Ewan Smith, Savoy, & Roy dined with Mr Sterne.

Wednesday 22 April Mrs Palgrave Simpson 4.30. Rested in bed until 1 o’c. Called 4 o’c on Aunt Linda, Macquoid, Phillips, Levys, Hickman, Wallace, Blair, in, & Mrs Tyrell, in. Roy to a ball after dinner. Muriel out.

Thursday 23 April X. Toujours ami. In bed till 12. Called 4 on Mesdames Stevenson, MacGauran, Keith, Graham, Carmichael, Gill, in, F. Jackson, in, & Lady Flower, in. Lin has niece of Prof Huxley as model. Feel limp & seedy fr. continuace of little F. which makes everything a worry & an effort.

Friday 14 April Mrs Palgrave Simpson 4 - 7. Toujour ami. To Bank 3 o’c. Saw Mr Richardson & arranged to borrow £150 extra making in all £450 I now owe the bank. Arranged for Bank to sell my £300 4% B.A.Gt. Southern debs, my last purchase in this Compy, at not under £108 per £100.

Fetched F. Walford & called Judge Bacon, Mrs D. Whitehead etc. Met her at Mrs P.S’s. Took F. back. Dinner 10.10!

Went morg. to Mrs Mason’s. Roy & Geoffrey here alone to dinner, I alone to luncheon. Lin went fr. Pirrie’s to Punch table.

Thursday 14 May Lady Critchett 4 - 7. Maurice Farkoa & Caustro Hungarian Band. Dull morg. Geoffrey out to lunch with Aunt Netta. Returned 4 & went with Maud & self in her carriage to Lady C. Met heaps friends, F. sang 8 times. All of us dined at Maud’s, charming dinner as usual.

Saturday 16 May Out morg. To matinee “A Country Girl” took Geoff Blair. Tabbie & Eve met us there, Evey returned here with Geoff & self to tea & dinner. Roy dined with Tabbie Coburg & to theatre after. Lin to Military Tournament, King there. Evey grown quite pretty. We all enjoyed play immensely.

Friday 5 June X. To dressmaker, dress v. ugly, never again! X. To Mr Smith’s & signed new will. Called & saw Mervyn & Ethel at Norfolk Hotel. M. looking v. well & smart, they arrived last evg. Lin dined at 9.15, I at 7.

Saturday 6 June Lin & self to “Girl from Kays” excellent. Roy returned at 6 o’c from his week’s training at Arundel, looks thin & tired but brown. Quiet evg, we three alone. Lovely day v. cold wind.

Sunday 7 June Dull, v. cold wind. Lin & self for walk. Met Roy with dogs & returned together. Lin & Roy to Sir Alfred’s for tennis. Mervyn & Ethel dine here.

by Otley. Lin & self alone to dinner. To Royal Society Soirée after, dined 8 o’c. Confusion carriage & Otley drove abominably, evidently had too much. Roy dined at Mrs Messel’s, to theatre after.

Saturday 20 June X. Hilda Messel’s wedding, 2.30 St James Paddington. X. Mrs Gupper 4.30. X. Otley drunk after wedding. X. In interview Lin saw & was convinced. Pretty wedding. Lin gave a lovely drawing to Ruth & to Hilda, awfully good of him. Hope Mr M. will do Roy some service too! Maud looked sweetly pretty. Roy dined at Maud’s, 30 to theatre after! Lin & self alone. Nonie did not come.

Saturday 4 July Go to Sir B. Baker’s. Uncertain! Mrs Hartley’s luncheon party at Welcome Club 1.30. Unable to go. Lin & self to see “Cousin Kate” Haymarket. Excellent. Dined quietly alone with only Mervyn & Roy. M. much more lively without Ethel.

Monday 6 July X. Loubet arrives. Lin off at 8.20 A.M by special invitation fr. Admiralty, Ld. Selbourne, to see Mons. Loubet’s arrival on one of our new men of war. I went to see Loubet pass fr. Sp’s club & saw splendidly. On after to see Effie at Mrs English’s, been very ill, seriously. Lin home in time for dinner, I entirely alone luncheon.

Tuesday 7 July Mrs Herbert Keith 4 - 7, 29 Caufield Gds, S. Hampstead. Mervyn dines here. Edgar may lunch here, did not come. To Sloane St morg. Mrs du Maurier & Sylvia & Miss Barran called. Mervyn & young Bergne dined here. Latter not a success, so slangy & self assertive.

Saturday 11 July Mrs Riviere’s 4 - 7. Lin to Sir W. Agnew’s yacht for few days. I go to Midge’s Stoke Edith. Came by 1.40 fr. Paddington, met Midge & Mons.

Sunday 12 July Lovely day. Blind boil fearfully painful, makes me feel quite ill.

Breakfasted in bed slept only fairly well. Sat out & walked with Midge.

Most lovely place & the beautiful little hamlet so unspoilt, all so picturesque. Mons. Casares left 4 o’c.

Monday 13 July Lovely day. Breakfasted in bed. Mr & Mrs Leghton, clergyman fr. (blank) to luncheon. Hamilton went off by early train to London, remains night.

Midge, Dora & self to call on Col. Bourne, had tea there. Dora dined at the Leghtons, 3 miles fr. Stoke.

Tuesday 14 July Mrs H. Keith 4 - 7. Mrs Marley 4 - 7. Two letters & postcard fr. Lin, Devon, expects to be home Wed. morg. Sat boudoir, rained. Midge writing invitations for Garden party. Lin returned from Plymouth, Sir W. Agnew’s yacht “Greta”, to Stafford Ter. Roy dined at Mrs Palmer’s.

Thursday 16 July In morg. Walked after lunch with D. to trout pool, lovely walk & saw quantities of trout. Wet after. Letters fr. Lin & Maud etc. Wrote to D. Bosanquet & asked him to play for Dora’s 11, 25th inst. H. & self beat M. & d. bridge.

Friday 17 July Sat out morg. working with D. & walked to the pretty little post office with Midge morg. Mrs Price Green called & we all went in break to Bunkers Hill. Most exquisite view of Malvern Hills & Monmouth Hills.

Heavy rain returning. Alternate sun & heavy showers all day. H. & self beat M. & D. bridge.

Saturday 18 July Heavy thunderstorm. Cleared after tea & we played croquet. Unable to go to Garden party.Tilda arrived in time for dinner fr. Edgar’s. Lin & Roy go to Balcombe.

Danced after. V. delightful evg. & day, fine.

Saturday 25 July Dora’s 11 against Miss Leigh’s. Fine morg. Miss L’s XI won toss & scored well 187 runs. 35 to luncheon served in Theatre. Rain stop’d our 11 at 4.30 at 17 to 3 wickets. Tea served out. Many visitors, amongst others Ld & Lady Chesterfield, Mrs Fairfax, Dean & Mrs Leigh, Miss L. etc etc etc. 15 again to dinner. Mr Evelyn, Mr & Mrs Green Price, Mrs Tracy etc etc. Danced after & songs Vera K. Davies & Mrs G.P.

Sunday 26 July Lovely day. Mr Foley & H. to Tarrington Church. Midge & Toula to Stoke Edith & Col. Parkinson, D. Vera & Mr Burns for walk. Self rested morg.

Walked after tea with H, M, Toula, Mr Evelyn & Mr Bromley Martin who came to tea. Mr Foley, Col. Parkinson & Mr Burns here still. Glorious day. Rest played cricket.

Tuesday 28 July Midge & H. to Puppy show Ledbury & lunch there. Met Duchess of Hamilton & Lady M. Carnaby Foster etc. Dora & Miss K.V. to Hereford Cricket match after 1 o’c lunch. Before lunched we 3 walked into Tarrington. Ethel English & Mr Kemp arrived to tea & remain. Mr Buxton also dined here.

Wednesday 29 July Lovely morg.

Thursday 30 July Dora, Ethel & Vera off early with Mr Kemp & Mr Buxton for otter hunt. I returned by 11 from Stoke Edith Park, Hereford. Met Mrs Kennedy who travelled in same compartment with me to Paddington where Otley met me, & drove across to Vic. Sta. where I joined Sp. (who was up fr.

Maud’s for the day) & Lin, & we came to darling Maud’s by 5 o’c train, only just caught it. Darling at station looking well. Sp.remaining until after Bank holiday. Lennie looks worried & pale. Babies well. Nurse Marion gone. Midge saw me off Stoke E. Sta.

Friday 31 July Rested morg. Dull day & colder. Nurse Millie arrived to lunch. Geoff Conrad & Mr Marriott come. Roy goes to Stoke Edith today.

Saturday 1 August Sp. had (illeg)! Roy played with Dora’s XI at Stoke & made top score of 60. They got 117 to 7 wickets. The other side won toss & got 176. Lovely day at Stoke Roy writes. Some rain here Balcombe. Had long walk with Lin & Sp. V. busy arranging dresses for Maud’s fancy dress impromptu Messel party, great fun for all, enjoyed it. Thrings & Mr Sheppard came.

Sunday 2 August After luncheon we all went over to Nymans to tea. Hilda & Cap Gibbs, Mr Gibbs, Mr Parker & Ruth & the 4 babies & our 2, 6. Ours shine!!! Went for long walk with Mr Messel, Dr M. & Lin thro’ woods & saw Mr M’s microscope after. Nurse F. v. seedy going & returning fr. Nymans. Sp, Geoff & Mr Marriott went with us.

Monday 3 August Lovely day. Sat about all day & had long walk with Lin & Spencer.

Tuesday 4 August Lovely day, windy. Geoff left by 3 train. Had long walk with Spencer & Lin round lake & mill. Sat about & gardened after luncheon with Lennie whilst Maudie rested.

Wednesday 5 August Poor Phil May died 1.30 today. Darling Maud’ sbirthday, lovely & fine.

Lennie at home all day. Mon dejeuner sauté par l’escalier, dangerous.

Vexed my present book “Debrett’s County Gentry” not come. Lin & Spencer went to town by 4.50 train. Mr Faure Walker called with Mrs Peel. Lin to London with Sp.

Tuesday 11 August Gt. preparations for Balcombe Flower Show. Pouring in torrents, tents must be soaking. Miss Parker (Ruth’s sister-in-law) arrived tea time. Mr Clement came in time for dinner. Dear Lin starts for Perth early this morg. to stay with Mr Wolff, Ballinluig, Ballechin, Perth, for week.

Wednesday 12 August Lovely day. Balcombe Flower Show. Went with Maud & Lennie to see Exhibits. Gardeners here best of fruit & v. daintily arranged all one side of tent. Lady F. Fitzroy’s roses beautiful & tall plants. Maud selected bread, 5 loaves. 5 prizes! Very gt. many came to tea. Mrs Twiss & Effie, Mrs Keating with the Messels, Fitzroys, Faure Walkers, etc. Dined in nursery, & lunched there. Darling Maud v. tired evg, c’d see she c’d scarcely sit through dinner. Great success show.

Thursday 13 August V. anxious about darling Maud, she looks so pale & the veins in her legs & her waist are like ropes, & so discoloured. Lovely day. Miss Parker to Nymans until 3.30 in Messels’ motor. Mr Clement wired for & had to leave suddenly. Mrs M. sent chair for Maudie. We had tea under trees & Lennie sat with us till 7 when he & Maudie went for walk. Darling v. tired.

Poor Maudie feeling very seedy, great discomfort & veins so enlarged & painful in her legs. Mr Winn came down for night with Lennie. Like a sickley Fleischman & laughed at everything. V. ordinary sort of man, son of Ld. St Oswald. Fond of music. Lennie played till past 11. Darling unable to sit at table, had hard chair in drawing room & to bed at 10 o’c.

Saturday 15 August Mr Winn left with Lennie by early train. Poured all morg. in torrents.

Nurse Maud came & Nurse Simmonds went for holiday. Miss Parker left at 3.30 for Worthing. Darling very seedy indeed, up only to lunch & felt v. sick after dinner. Cannot get her into bed before 11.15. No letter fr. Lin. 2 brace of grouse fr. Mr Wolff.

Sunday 16 August To Church alone between heavy showers. Nurse Maud with me in pew. I remained to Communion. Lady Frederick most kind in enquiries for darling Maud. V. wet & heavy storms of rain & wind.

Monday 17 August Maudie’s leg still v. bad. Quiet day. Maud walked with me to E. garden morg & with Lennie evg. but was too tired after. Afraid she ought to lie up entirely.

Tuesday 18 August Went for walk morg. with the Babies. Je n’aime pas l’autre bonne, elle est si commun. Darling Maud looks a little better. Letter fr. Lin he travels fr. Ballechin tonight reaching London tomorrow morg. Babies to Nymans in Victoria. Mr & Mrs Gilbert there & Miss Mackintosh. Maudie & self rested & then sat out & worked. Lennie & self cut roses. After dinner had talk about Roy & loan.

Friday 21 August Mrs Messel, Mr M, pretty Mrs Barber cousin of the Gibbs & Miss Gibbs came to tea. Mrs B. very pretty smart woman, widow with 350 a year but dresses like 1000. Je ne me sens pas bien toujours ces eruptions sur la figure qui montre sang de mauvaise état.

Sunday 23 August Lovely day. Miss Venning, Violet, Mr Clement to church. Darling Nonie to Church with Nurse F. morg, 1st time. V. good. Lin & self M. & Lennie sat on verandah. Winnie L. wrote letters. After luncheon Lin, Lennie & Miss V. to Nymans in motor. Maud and Nonie, self, in Vic. Pretty Mrs Barber there. Lin & I walked home. Maudie better evg.

Monday 24 August Very wet morg. Rained in heavy showers all day. London streets & cellars flooded. Roy has huge boil on chin at Pyt fr. blood poisoning. V. anxious about him. Tiresome when he was so much better. Long walk evg. with Lin round Tates. Ina Venning & Winnie fetched Lennie in motor. Dumb Crambo evg. Troisième fois le V (illeg) à table par hôte.

Thursday 27 August Mr Wertzler came down with Lennie. V. ugly & common looking young man about 20 but distinctly intelligent. Packed afternoon, no, morg.

Darling M. insists on my taking chicken, tomatoes, cucumber & 6 eggs.

Talked evg. no music. Mr W. cousin of Mr Fleischman, looks it.

Friday 28 August Returned to Stafford Ter. fr. darling Maud’s, she saw me off at Balcombe Sta. Found all well here. Emma away holiday. Frances doing cooking, Margarith rest. Roy still at Pyt returns Monday or Tuesday & goes to Maud. Been v. seedy with large gathering fr. razor poisoning. Dined with Lin 10 o’c. V. tired poor dear.

Saturday 29 August In morg packing. To “Dahomey” matinée with Lin. V. fairly good, little tedious in parts. Fine day. Lin looks tired, seems to have so much to do even when not drawing with photos which take up 9/10th of his time.

Wish he could get more leisure. Blind boil awfully painful.

Monday 31 August Left Staf. Ter. at 9 o’c fr Gt Central. Most uncomfortable journey & bad luncheon, v. dear 10/6. Had to change twice. Arrived Majestic Hotel Harrogate 5.15. Found Mr Clerihugh, Mr Peter Reid, Sir T & Lady Lawrence here at same hotel. V. nice room first floor southern aspect.

Slept well. Went & saw Dr Liddell at 6 o’c. 2 glasses strong sulphur, 8 & 8.30. Strong sulphur bath 98, 15 minutes alternate days. Our room 1st floor charming No 129. 10/- a day 10% off account.

Tuesday 1 September Engaged room at Queen’s Hotel Harrogate. Not going there. To take waters 8 o’c. Lin & self breakfast table d’hote 3/6 each, excellent. Too long walk after rest 2½ hrs. Saw Mrs Mackasy at Pump rom. Lin depressed evg. at leaving tomorrow. Sat with Lawrences.

Wednesday 2 September Pouring wet day. Lin left at 8 o’c, I in his fly to Pump room. Worked morg & afternoon walked. Dined with Mr Peter Reid, Mr C. & Dr Bowles there also. V. pleasant evg. Plain luncheon. Bought wool 1/11.

Thursday 3 September 2/6 started plain breakfast. Bath at 10.30. Saw Mr Grossmith. To take water 10 to 8. Met Mr C. coming out & walked to Hotel together. Met Mrs Mackasy. Lay down. Table d’hôte luncheon 3/6, felt I needed it. Mr Reid gave me Ld. Dufferin’s book. Walked with Lady L. to Doctor, says I must not go anywhere sightseeing yet, too weak. Giving me tonic & nose douche. Met Marie & Mr & Mrs Vaughan Morgan lunching here. Had tea with Mr C, Mrs Vansittart & Mrs (blank). Sat after dinner with Sir T. & Lady L. Letters fr. Lin & Roy.

Saturday 5 September Raining morg. Dull. Close. Had Bath & rested there after, & after luncheon here. Lovely afternoon. Letters fr. Lin & Maud. Hotel seems fuller than ever. Walked to Station about Grimsby, old curiosity shops.

Called on Mrs Grossmith. Sat after dinner with Mrs W, Mr L & Major Dugdale & Col. Brook (Mrs W’s guest). Spoke to Mrs Ismay & Drages.

Sunday 6 September Started plain luncheon 2/6. Sat about morg after taking waters.Mr C. took me, Mrs W, Major D for lovely drive 3 hours to Ripley, Nidd & Knaresboro’! We all had tea together, Mr & Mrs Drage also. Saw Mrs Ismay again. Mr C. out to dinner, Grand, with V.M’s. Mrs V. Morgan asked me to dine tonight. Never had her letter, just going into dinner here, too late.

Monday 7 September X. Signs of petite ami. Did not drink water take bath or take medicine.

Bought bottle sulphur for nose douche, 3d, & 1d bottle. Met Mr C. with Marie V. Morgan, walked with them, explained about mistake last evg.

Rained heavily. Saw Doctor. X. 3rd visit, & the vulgar little lady with her child from Hotel. Met Violet Rogerson in Parliament Street & her husband later. Went to bed early after writing letters.

Tuesday 8 September A Mrs Rose called? Mrs Whatman left, gave me her address, 2 Cranley Gardens, to call. Mrs Ismay asked me to join her party evening. Did not take waters. Met Daisie Markham & Evy Nicolson as I was going out, 46

Wednesday 9 September Fine morg. Poured in torrents all afternoon. Met Major Dugdale at Pump room, walked after with him, had 2nd glass & then fetched my bottle of water. Spoke to Mrs Ismay at breakfast. Wrote to Lin & Maud, no news of Roy. Maudie sent me powder. Miss Brown called & came to my room, stayed some time. Called on Lady L, out. Lovely lady with Lady Derby’s party. Indigestion violently at 4.30. Seems to have come with little F. & cold, did not have it before.

Thursday 10 September Otley laid up, Lin’s work hindered. Lin unable to get to Stoke Edith until Monday in consequence. Fine morg. Sat after dinner with Ismays. Dined with Mr Clerihugh, Marie V. Morgan & her father & Major Dugdale. Sat after in winter garden. Lady Lawrence & son joined our party. Vy late to bed. Young L. v. common looking but has brains. Found Mr V. Morgan intersting tho’ rough diamond. Had tea with Mrs Rogerson & Mr & Miss Coates. Violent indigestion.

Friday 11 September To Doctor 5 o’c, 1st day to 5 o’c. 4th visit. Walked with Miss Brown. Sat out morg. & saw Major D. Mrs Ismay asked me to tea. After doctor’s visit went & had v. pleasant talk with Mrs I. & Mrs Drage. Also sat with them & Major Dugdale after dinner, first with Mr C. who leaves tomorrow. Little F & great soreness, bought larger douche to use both purposes, Indigestion, 3rd day of it.

Saturday 12 September Dullish cloudy some sun. Cold. Mr Clerihugh left 10 o’c & Vaughan Morgans. Cannot take a bath. Little F. continues, feel more comfortable fr. using douche. Met Mrs Simmonds at Pump room, walked with her, 47

Cold & poured with rain, alternate sun. Sat with Ismays in their room after dinner, a Mrs Cox with them & Daisie M. looking vy handsome. Ada Ismay v. like Grace Fraser. “Tart” couple in front of me. Friday 18 September X. Mr Chamberlaine resigned & fiscal question, taxing corn. Heavenly day. V. warm. Walked home with Major Dugdale, told me Mr Chamberlaine, Dr Ritchie, Ld G. Hamilton had resigned. Mr Chamberlaine most important. Bath at 11. Rested there & felt better. Met Mrs Murray & talked after luncheon to a Mrs Armstrong whose husband is Rector of library at Dublin. Tea at Ophir. Flowers fr. darling Maud. V. warm all day. Mervyn & Ethel to stay at Maud’s.

Saturday 19 September Fine but not sunny & warm. 6th visit to Dr Liddell. Does me no good & judges by appearances only, neither testing water nor heart. He alters my tonic & to continue baths. Feel seedy rather, digestion & circulation wrong. To tea Ophir. Taken over house by one of the 2 sister ladies. V. interesting 2 women alone sh’d be able to make such a business in 2 years, employ 18 maids, 4 chefs, & others. Mrs Armstrong fetched me to sit with her in hall. Very nice woman, well read, husband director of Dublin Library.

Sunday 20 September No water brought. Commenced new tonic. Warm dull morg. Met Miss Brown at Ophir, walked together. Saw Major D. looking v. ill. Lin remains until tomorrow at Stoke Edith. Had bath at 11. Met Miss Brown & Mrs Simmonds who asked me to tea 5 o’c Grand Hotel. Went after rest & enjoyed it, excellent band of women. Went over Hotel. Dined 7.15. 2

Tuesday 22 September Had long walk with Miss Armstrong, seems nice girl. Doctor 5 o’c. Says I must remain until Monday, dreadful bore. Start Aix douche baths tomorrow. Received £7.7.6. cheque fr. Smith lawyer of £10 due fr. Edie’s surplus money. He repaid himself £2.2.6 for alteration to Will leaving the £7.7.6. Hope he has made no mischief, his profession seems to necessitate doing so! Sat with Armstrongs, was introduced to a Mr Farrer by them who is staying at Cairn Hydro. Rained heavily afternoon.

Thursday 24 September Violet Phillips came morg & found me reading in garden. Stayed until lunch time. Mrs Simmonds & Miss Gow to tea. Walked part of way with them back. I dined with Sir W. Armstrong, Lady A. ill, Mr Farrer & daughter. Vy pleasant evg. winter garden & talked on interesting topics.

Friday 25 September Fearful day poured in torrents. Unable to go out morg. for sulphur water.

Thick mist. Bath at 3.40. accident outside with Nurse, missed 10 minutes of my bath! Met Miss Brown. Very tired, to bed 9 o’c. Sat some time with Lady Armstrong.

Dr L. told me the tall handsome couple are Mr & Mrs Miller Mundy, she a sister of Sir Charles Hartop! She & her sister look like it. Fireworks evg. Clever lady next me fr. Scarborough.

Sunday 27 September Water before breakfast. Aix douche at 10.40. Bather late & short time.

Lovely day. Sir Walter asked me to join their party after dinner. Pleasant with clever lady next table during dinner. Sat evg with Sir W. & Lady Armstrong, she looks v. ill.

Monday 28 September Go to Grimsby to stay with Edgar at Ravendale Hall for week, leave Majestic Hotel 9.30 to catch 10 o’c train Doncaster & Grimsby. Very comfortable journey, met pleasant clergyman’s wife in 3rd class carriage to Doncaster. Two Frenchmen in my compartment, fortunately left it after. Dog cart met me Grimsby. Edgar & Sophy both well. George & Anna staying with them. Pleasant evg.

Tuesday 29 September Dullish day, warm, no sun. Down to 8.30 breakfast. Walked with Edgar to see George fishing, 2 fish only, rest too small to take. Walked with Sophy & Anna before dinner. Quiet evg. Vy warm. Felt faint after walk.

Wednesday 30 September Fine day, sunny & warm. George & Anna left vy early to spend 10 days in London. Letters fr. Midge, Lin & Grace Fraser. Walked morg. with Edgar, garden with Sophy, & afternoon with Edgar, shot rabbits. Sophy to fetch Mrs Davis fr. Grimsby alone in dog cart. Feel headachy.

Saturday 3 October Sophy off early cub hunting. Ed riding 11 o’c to meet her. Wet & fine alternately. Walked morg. with Mrs Davis. Afternoon walked with Edgar Sophy & Mrs Davis to play tennis at Rothwell, home at 7 o’c. Played bridge after dinner, I vy badly.

Sunday 4 October Fairly fine. Sophy photod me. Usual non success with my portrait! Sat in all morg. No church, only service once a month in hamlet. To Church with E. & S. & Mrs Davis. Mr Fagan in after. Eye painful. Discovered awful place in head!

Monday 5 October Dull & heavy rain but cleared by 11.20 when I left Ravendale in cart with groom. Edgar met me at Grimsby, sold his 2 cows £26.17.6. Paid £23.13.0. Sophy cub hunting. Found dear Lin & Roy well. All well at home. Quiet evg. Felt v. tired & eye painful.

Tuesday 6 October Wet, but went & saw Dr Abrams, says treatment too severe. New lotions, medicine etc 6/1 which Otley got stores! £1.1.0 fee! Lanced eyebrow & probed with carbolic. Vy painful. Place in head Alopicia caught at Harrogate! So much for my £52 cure!!! X. Paid £100 off loan making 350 now owing. Ethel & Mervyn to tea! Hare & 2 partridges fr. Midge.

Friday 9 October Lovely morg. Strong wind. Lin fnished drawing at 7.30. Walked morning & shop’d. Letter fr. Tabbie saying she had heard again fr.Gwen who is at Stoke Edith that engagement of Dora to Mr Foley would be announced next week. Roy dined with Harold. He goes to America to be married.

Darling Nonie still very seedy in bed with chill, catarrh.

Saturday 10 October Roy to Con’s till Monday. Home to lunch looking v. seedy. Out morg. shops. No news fr. darling Maud of Nonie boy. To matinée “Little Mary” by bus & home together by bus. Quiet evening. Letter at dinner fr.

Tuesday 13 October Mr Stone’s dinner F2 Albany, 8 o’c. ref. for self. Roy going also in my place. Met Midge morg. at Woollands. Stayed some time with her, looking wonderfully well. Mrs Spofforth, Palgrave Simpson, Adams, Nembhard & May, F. Walford & Miss Childs called. Midge dined with me alone, delightful evg. together. Dear Roy looked v. seedy & I feel ditto, bad throat & hot & cold.

Wednesday 14 October Tea with Ethel Mervyn at her Club, unable to go, very seedy. To see Abrams, says I have influenza! Much good has Harrogate done me!!!

Dora to Norfolk & remains with Midge & Mervyns till Saty when they all leave, Mervyns for Florence. Rain eternal.

Thursday 15 October Lady Lockyer 3 - 6. To Dr Abram morg. by om. Felt v. hot & cold & stupid, congested. Says its slight influenza. Unlucky mortal that I am.

Believe revolving basins are to blame as I am never well or Roy either at home.

Friday 16 October Fine, colder. In bed till 12 o’c. After lunch for short walk but felt vy. seedy, hot & cold. Got flowers. Read to Lin a book Gen. Hawkins sent “Philestines”. American, vy amusing. Geoff Blair called when I was out & Ethel Mervyn came to say goodbye after dinner. They leave for Italy Sunday early. Dined 9.30 very very tired & cold.

Roy with Mr Sterne in motor to Oxford away for lunch & dinner. Miss Rose Innes called stayed until 7. Lin hard at work all day.

Monday 19 October In bed to breakfast. Dull. Out at 12. Geoff Blair to dinner, has to pass exam Thursday in Russian. Affliction very noticeable!

Tuesday 20 October No one called. Very wet all day. Roy to drill, late home 11 o’c. Letter fr Gwen saying she was coming tomorrow for one night. Awkward as I can’t get off Thurs.

Wednesday 21 October Lady Lockyer 3 - 6. Very annoyed with Margarith made great fuss showed temper over giving up her afternoon after my long absence shows she cannot be worth much! Gwen coming for one night. V. tiresome prevents my going to Maud’s tomorrow. Out morg. vy. wet.

Pleasant little evg. Gwen grown v. pretty & is bright & clever.

Saturday 24 October Fine. Came by 4.30 to Balcombe. Roy in to luncheon. Lin dined with Roger Wallace, Automobile Club, & joined me at Vic Sta. Roy not coming. Gt. commotion at Sta. with the steam hammers rebuilding Station. Met Sir F. & Rosie Burnand going to Brighton by same train.

Found darling Maud looking so well & happy & the darlings well. Lennie looked vy depressed. Quiet evg. So thankful Maud well.

Sunday 25 October Very wet. Slept badly. Lin in dejection own fault taking wine after fruit pudding! Lennie & Lin to Nymans in motor walking back.

Sunday 1 November Lovely day. To Church alone. Good sermon fr. stranger. Walk with Lin who met me coming out of Church. Lin & Lennie to Nymans after lunch.

With Grace F. drove there. Major Hawker nice little man & Mr Welsh Thornton came for night & dined. Major H. vy fond of Roy, his wife knows Pyt.

Monday 2 November Grace Fraser left at 9.30, returning next week for village concert. Major Hawker Mr Welsh Thornton, Lin, Lennie, Mr Parker & 2 other guns shot at Nymans. 33 birds only but Lin enjoyed day. Vy fine.

Tuesday 3 November Had lovely walk with Lin morg. by Mrs Faure Walker’s & round. Not tired after & slept after luncheon for a few moments. X. Lin’s cold very heavy.

Slept badly, rather late to bed.

Wednesday 4 November Fine. Dear Lin goes up to town by 10, cold about same. Nurse F. gone to London for day. Drove with Maud & Nonie for 1½ hrs by Red Road & Lady Pearson’s. Lovely afternoon. Mrs Thring to tea in the last of country walking costumes. Lennie in fine form, swearing in men for his Volunteer company. Tufley, 2 of his gardeners & two others!

Thursday 5 November Lovely morg. Edgar & Sophy start for India & a years travelling round the world! Slept very badly no doubt fr. having no sleep after luncheon & no walk yesterday. Edgar & So leave next Tuesday not today.

Friday 6 November Quiet uneventful day.

Saturday 7 November Spencer, Grace, Violet & Mr Stuart came to stay. Lin not coming. Nonie very feverish & sick. Dr Parker came, uncertain what it is. Put in spare room with Nurse F. & carbolic sheet across door, temp 102.2. Lin & Roy to Gaiety. Mr & Mrs Messel & M. called, had seen Roy at Gaiety looking v. ill last night. Lin can’t see it!

Sunday 8 November To Church with Grace. All Lennie’s volunteers & cadet boys fr. Ardingley College 142 in all to Church, & reviewed after. Lennie gave his men a dinner 72, & 3 of the masters fr. A.C. lunched here. Band fr. Handcross played after until 4 o’c. Poor Nonie in bed & out in red rash. Little Anne delighted. Mr Stewart in Yeoman uniform acting as Lennie’s orderly.

Monday 9 November Hamilton Langley’s shoot at Stoke Edith. Lin taking Otley, I unable to go.

Lennie in high spirits evg. Nonie better but temp 101.6 still. Rash out all over him except face. Grace left 12 o’c. Ada Sp. came to luncheon. Sp. Fetched her fr. Haywards Heath. Feel most anxious about Roy. Lennie cheerful.

Wednesday 11 November Lost my specks! Mr Rowe came to tea. Fairly fine, quite warm. Dr Parker came to see Nonie, much better. Still to remain in bed. Little Anne well again of teeth worry. Walked morg. with Sp. & drove with him to see Hilda after lunch. Letter fr. Lin fr. Stoke Edith. Col Davidson & wife, Major Kevil-Davis, Sir A. Ledyard, Tabs & Ham & Mr Foley there.

Thursday 12 November Letter fr. Lin fr. Stoke Edith, poor ‘Scamp’ dead. Spencer returns to London. Saw him off by 4.20. Hilda met him at Balcombe. Still bothered with (blank) which prevents my walking & feel headachy in consequence. Nonie better & little Anne well. Still cannot find specks.

Must have lost them at Miss Maberly.

Friday 13 November Dr Parker sent Nonie out for 20 minutes. Looks pale & pulled down, otherwise well. Letters fr. Lin & Tabs begging me to go Monday to Pyt but am afraid to. Lin’s old complaint which makes me seedy! Maud for drive with V. I had long letter fr. Mr Clements. Florence W. came. Lennie very well.

Mr Allen coming for night. Vy pleasant dinner & evg. Darling Maud v. tired. Nonie in my room, screamed for Nurse F. & was carried off to her room at 11.30 PM.

Wednesday 18 November Letter fr. Lin fr. Pyt. Guns there Ld Winford, Mr & Mrs Bennett, Mr Rooth, H. & Lin. Roy at Pyt also. Darling Maud in bed all day, back aching.

Walked morg & saw ripe raspberries in garden near Post Office! Lennie seems well & in good spirits. Nonie none the worse for being transplanted during night. Dr P. came, says he is to gargle.

Thursday 19 November Lovely morg, white frost. Violet left at 4.20. Walked morg with V. to Sta. Saw Mrs Tate in distance. Saw ripe raspberies in P. Office garden. Dear Roy returning fr. Pyt with H. & Tabs dined with them Coburg, & to theatre.

Friday 20 November Dull morg, cold. Sat with Maudie, in bed all day but came down to dinner looking sweet. Walked along New Rd fr. B. till 3, met Nurse Frith, Baby.

Rained. Rested & tea in Maud’s room with F. Walford. Lennie fairly well, seemed tired. To bed early.

Saturday 21 November Lin coming by 4.30 train. Lennie shooting with Mr Faure Walker. Terribly bothered with Lin’s old complaint, otherwise am so well, or sh’d be! Lin looking better, headache gone. Roy motoring with Mr Sterne.

Monday 23 November Lennie Mr Parker & Lin shooting at Nymans. In agony all morg with old complaint. Very seedy. Too long walk yesterday with Lin, awful pain, unable to go down to dinner. Lin’s old complaint!

Tuesday 24 November Lady Pearson’s recept. to view presents for Miss P’s wedding with Lord Denman. Better but still vy uncomfortable. Darling gives me every conceivable thing to cure it. Drove with Maudie & F. Lennie at home seedy all day fr. gun headache. Unable to walk all day.

Wednesday 25 November Lady Pearson’s 2nd reception. For drive with Maudie & Florence, lovely day. Walked with Lin to Station, he went up by 10.40. Still discomfort.

Letter fr. Midge asking us for Xmas. Roy going to Pyt. Had written Tabbie accepting her invite for Xmas for Lin & self. Lennie inspecting volunteers & home late.

Thursday 26 November Lord Alverstone’s dinner ¼ to 8. Miss Pearson’s marriage with Lord Denman. Letter fr. Tabbie again about Xmas. Wired Lady Denman congratulations! Drove at 11.30 with Maud, lovely driving. Took Barney back to Nymans. Florence vy seedy & unable to come to dinner.

Friday 27 November Still uncomfortable but better. In all day, damp & cold. Florence W. feeling seedy.

Sunday 29 November Very wet & chilly. Lin & Roy for walk morg. Little Anne not well. Ans’d invitations. Lennie getting ferns from wood. Horrid day. Nonie not well & little Anne not herself.

Monday 30 November Roy dines with Cap. & Mrs Homphrey. Lin went for short walk walk with me. Vy cold but bright. Lennie looking v. seedy.

Tuesday 1 December Lin & Roy dining at Carlton with Miss Rose Innes. Vy charming dinner 16, Galbraiths disappointed at last moment. Packed. Lennie shot with Sir W. Pearson & reviewed (illeg) brigade after. V. tired & seedy he looks but played pianola. Babies better but Nonie seedy again.

Wednesday 2 December Geoff Conrad comes to us for his Exam. Tabbie’s fancy dress Ball. Sp. to luncheon. I came up fr. Balcombe by 10.45, left darling in bed & not v. well. F. saw me off. Found all well & house looking nice. Roy looking seedy & v. cross & tiresome. Sp. stayed until 3 & sat with Lin. Too tired to go out.

Thursday 3 December Out morg. Breakfasted in bed. Too noisy downstairs with Roy! Roy dined out with Mr Sterne, theatre & sup’r out! I slept v. badly. To Stores but unable to get ¼ of what I wanted. Feel too seedy in head to be able to think properly. 3rd bad night.

Rested 2 to 3 & drove to Marshall Snelgroves for lace & chiffon for bodice, had it sent to Florence W. Poor Lennie in bed ill will be unable to go to Stoke Monday. Letters fr. Maud & F. Walford. Roy seems better, dined 10 o’c with Lin. I had mine earlier, 7 o’c, v. tired. Tufley, Lennie’s butler, married today.

Saturday 5 December Dense fog. Shop’d Barkers, met Mrs Thring. Unable to go out, awful fog, had intended to go to see Tree in Richard II. Roy out to lunch. Lin, Roy & self in to dinner. Man Lin gave a quantity of clothes to not returned his bag, a new one! So much for gratitude!

Sunday 6 December Dull & v. cold & raw. Lin & self at 11.15 to Zoo in brougham. New white polar bear, wee thing. Called & saw Sir John Tenniel. Stayed some time with him, seems hurt Lin has not been before. Roy out to luncheon. No one called. Quiet evg. we three. Very sleepy, liver!

Monday 7 December Wet morg. By omnibus early to Harrods. £3.4.6½. Met Sybil Grantham there. Fine afternoon, in. Roy dines out & has carriage. Lin’s bag not returned from Rowton lodging house, a severe lesson in being kind to a poor man! Usual gratitude.

Tuesday 8 December Geoff Conrad comes to stay, came & went off to his French Exam. Roy dined out with the Daniels. Vy tired shop’g morg. V. unsuccessful. Roy had carriage.

Wednesday 9 December Dull morg. fine later. Carriage to Lincoln’s Inn, Bankruptcy court 11/10!

Saturday 12 December To see “Richard II” matinée with Lin & Geoff. Interesting. Roy to Club.

Played Bridge with boys evg. Roy seems better for Geoff’s company.

Sunday 13 December Walked with Geoff to see Spencer. Ada in bed with cold. Spencer & Miss Rose Innes to luncheon. Mr Paxton came to tea, stayed ages, looks v. ill.

W’d like to have kept him for dinner. Lin busy with drawing.

Monday 14 December Geoff for walk with Lin. Drove with Geoff to Stores & Harrods. Quiet evg. with Lin, Roy & Geoff. Dined 9 o’c.

Tuesday 15 December Lin left by 2.30 for Col. Lucas, Easton Pk, Wickham Market. Je pense que O. a trop bu, he let Lin’s bags fall. I came to Maudie’s by 4.30 train.

Geoff saw me off Vic, & remains on with Roy at Staf. Ter. till Saty. Roy ought to have gone to drill but did not!

Wednesday 16 December Mrs Galbraith’s to the 21st. Shoot. Mr R. Rose’s marriage with Miss Hemmingson (illeg illeg). Lin had excellent days shooting at Col. Lucas’ Easton Park, Wickham Market. Otley with him. Got 65 pheasants besides other game. Darling Maud well & happy always thinking of others.

Florence W. working with her. Lennie much better, at home, not to go to city. Babies well.

Thursday 17 December Washed & cleaned 2 chairs Lennie is giving to Mrs Messel. Lennie busy in garden, seems v. soon tired. Baby slight cold. Maudie v. busy working. Lin had another good days shooting & good company. Left at night & travelled by night mail to Dumfries, Galbraiths.

Friday 18 December Maudie & I packed hampers for Aunt Barbara, Nana & Conrad boys.

Much too good of her quite £3 a hamper. Lin arrives Terregles this morning, Galbraiths. Shoots today & tomorrow. Lennie seemed vy tired evg. after his days gardening & altering books.

Saturday 19 December Lin shoots Terregles & leaves by night mail! Enough to kill him this rushing about by night trains. Very damp & cold. Mr & Mrs Messel & Muriel came over morg. Geoff arrived for luncheon fr. Stafford Terrace, stayed till 6.10 & went to Worthing.

Sunday 20 December Lin arrives at 8 AM home. Florence & self to Church & Communion service. Maudie v. busy all day doing up presents. Greatly fear she is doing too much.

Monday 21 December Florence Walford & I go up by 10.40 train. I return here tomorrow.

Florence goes to Maudie’s at Glouc. Ter. next Monday & stays with her.

Did not go. Wire fr. Lin, fog in London so remain here. Saw F.W. off.

Thursday 24 December Dull. Dear Lin to Pyt, unable to get off Tuesday or yesterday, so foggy in London. Unable to get studies for next week’s work. Lin travelled with George Dietz to Pyt. Roy with Dora to Stoke by 1.40 train for Xmas. Quiet busy happy day arranging Tree. Lennie at Nymans shooting.

Friday 25 December Xmas Day. Dull & dark, not v. cold. To morg. service with Violet. Lennie, Babies & Violet to Nymans for day. Darling Maud & self very happy alone arranged lottery(?) presents deserts etc. Maudie gave me a lovely blk. cloth mantle made by her precious self copied fr. Mrs Young, perfectly lovely. “The birds Xmas Tree”! 2 large cushions for the Dad shirts & china bowl for Roy etc etc. V. happy day. Tabbie sent me grey knitted jacket, v. pretty. Indigestion evg, well deserved fr. injudicious eating! Darling v. bright, busy & well & happy. Lennie played evg. our favourite pieces pianola. Violet thinks Mrs Harold pretty tho’ v. delicatelooking. No letter fr. Lin but a wire last evg. with greetings.

Saturday 26 December Went for walk with Nurse F. Baby & Nonie. Baby Bettie, Ruth & Hilda came over morg. V. busy on darling’s dress all afternoon. Lennie at Nymans shooting with E. Parker & Capt. Gibbs.

Wednesday 30 December Drove to Maud’s after luncheon & called on several, all away. Met Aunt Linda & Amy. Called on Mrs Nembhard, Mrs Macmillan, Tweedie & Pollock. Walked to & from Maud’s morg.

Thursday 31 December Lin, Roy & self dined at darling Maud’s. Violet Philips & Florence Walford there. Delightful evg. & Maudie v. well. Called on Mrs V. Cole for sake of walk. Very raw & cold.
