Wednesday 1 January In all day. Bad news fr. Transvaal our troops driven back the Boers & gone into their country. General disapproval & v. unfortunate just now with Venezuala trouble looming! Maud & I dined at Colonel Welby’s, only Col. Thompson & Mr Fitzhenry there besides ourselves. Most charming little dinner & talk after, generally politics, Transvaal disaster. Roy to theatre evg. with Banbury. Alice v. seedy with sore throat.
