Monday 1 January Bitterly cold. Lin’s cold heavy. Mr Soubey called & stayed a long time.

Lin & self dined at Mrs Burnand’s. Squire & Mrs Hammond & Bessie there. Felt ill & had to come away. Maud went to the O’Reilly’s dance West Cliff & danced good deal with Ld. Southwell & J.Weigall.

Tuesday 2 January Bitterly cold. Mare returned to London. Piercing wind. Miss Warre called & had tea.

Wednesday 3 January Maud out morg. with Agnes. Lin to London by 10 train. Maud lunched at Bucks. W.B. brought her back & persuaded me to let her go to Mrs Fox Tomson’s next Tuesday. Maud to Mrs Burnand’s dance. I not well enough to go, Roy too idle.

Thursday 4 January V. cold, sleet & high wind, v. rough sea. Maud slept with me, came in fr.

Burnand’s party 2.30. Dear Lin’s birthday. M. & self called on Mrs Hammond & Mrs Burnand. Sat & had tea with Mr & Miss Gould. Wreck off Gladwin Sands. M. seedy with sore throat.

Friday 5 January Bitterly cold. Out morg. with Roy & Kerrie. Met Lady Rose & Archie & Rosie B. & Mr Banks. Maud had letter fr. Lennie M. In bed to breakfast & 5

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1894 out for walk with Agnes. Wire fr. Lin, can’t come today. Maud & self called on Mrs Grant, Mrs Jones & Mrs Hood. M. v. disappointed not to go to Rink & Mrs Pugin’s yesterday.

Saturday 6 January Not so cold. Roy & self out for walk to station for papers. Young W.B. called at 10 o’c, neither Roy or Maud down to breakfast, to ask M. for walk & to lunch there, went. After lunch M. & self went at 3.30 to tea at Miss Warre’s, saw Mr Weigall’s portrait of Mr Warre, v. good. Lin came down by Granville looking better.

Sunday 7 January Fog & snow. V. cold, slightly below freezing. Wrote morg. Lin & Roy walked. Mrs Burnand called. Connie B. to London to stay with her fiancé’s people in Nottingham. Went in to Burnands after dinner. Mr J. Weigall there, much improved in manners & appearance.

Monday 8 January V. cold & windy. Roy to Minster for skating. We all 4 dine at Mrs Burnand’s this evening. V. jolly evg & stayed late. Maud with Agnes twice to Sycamore’s. Lin & self walked there afternoon, met Mr F.C.B.

Tuesday 9 January Mrs Fox Tomson’s juvenile party. Lin & Roy out all morg. M. in bed to breakfast. I walked after lunch with Lin & Roy to Pier. Roy shot 2 sparrows! With 13 cartridges! M. enjoyed dance, no young men there.

Wednesday 10 January Great commotion Agnes & Roy went off without Lin’s bags. Rainy & raw morg. Lin’s bags on Mr Burnand’s fly. Lin walked to station. Mrs Buckmaster wrote me letter of Edie’s engagement to Mr Sismey. Maud lunched there today.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1894 Maud & Mervyn to Westminster Town Hall dance with Mrs Joachim’s party. Dear Mother v. ill spitting blood. Lin, Roy & self to see “Sowing the Wind” did not care for it as much as first time, B.Thomas so drawley.

I lunched at home & unpacked.

Friday 12 January Shop’g morg. I stayed to lunch with dear Mother. Saw Orton who thought no danger but Mother looks ill & weak in bed. Judy came.

Returned at 4.30 & took Maud to Mrs Joachim’s who said M. looked sweet at ball & was much admired. Met Mr Woodruffe at Mrs Joachim’s.

Roy rode Cob, who ran away with him in Row. Roy seems nervous of him.

Saturday 13 January X. Lovely morg. Lin & Roy to Pantomime. Maud & self join Lin & Roy at theatre evg. X. Pay £30 into Midge’s & £30 into my P.O. Savings book & send hers Dora & my books to be made up.

Sunday 14 January Dark pouring wet morg. I spent morg. with Mother & lunched there. She came in to luncheon but had to lie down soon, looks v. weak & fragile.

Returned home 4 o’c, Mervyn with Mother. Miss Innes came to tea & remained to dinner. Sp. came about 9 & stayed till 12 o’c. Lin & self v. tired.

Monday 15 January Lin & self dine at Sir B. Baker’s 7.45. Eff H. comes at 4 o’clock & stays night. Sp. to dinner ¼ to 7 & they all go to see “Headless Man” at Criterion by Burnand. Lin riding morg. Mr Crisp rich vulgar solicitor took me in to dinner & most uninteresting. 11 to dinner. A.Lewis, Sir C.Tupper, Mr & Mrs Dewar, Mr & Mrs Crisp & old gentleman (illeg) Mrs MacKinlay (illeg) told us of Santly & confirmed Mrs Finlay’s story of him!

Tuesday 16 January 7

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1894 Asked friends to tea. Maud & Effie Harrison to tea at Blanche Cole’s. Lin, M, Roy, Effie H. & self to Lyceum to see “Pantomime”. Lovely morning.

Lin riding morning. Fritz came into our box for interval.

Wednesday 17 January Wet morg. Cleared at 12. Roy took Maud & Effie to Park. Roy lunched with Pollack, Curzon St. & remained to tea. Effie H. left after lunch. I spent afternoon with dear Mother, found her up on sofa & better. Judy & Mervyn there. Mrs Mocatta called. Agnes out.

Thursday 18 January Lovely day. Maud for walk with Agnes. Roy with me. Rested after lunch.

Roy & I to see “An old Jew” by S. Grundy at Garrick Thetare. Mr & Mrs Burnand & Frank there. Roy v. troublesome. Cabs 5/-. Grapes 3/6, nuts 5d. Sent some grapes to dear Mother, not so well tonight when Alice took them after we had gone.

Friday 19 January Maud dines with Miss Holland & goes to theatre with her party. Lady Hardman’s at home 4 o’c, 55 Carlisle Place Mansions. Mrs. Clerke’s at home to meet Miss Wallace 4 o’c. Lin & Roy to Tabbie’s by 4 something.

M. & self dined with Miss H. Mr Colville & Rex Cole there. Came home when they went to theatre. Cabs 2/-. M. to Miss Clerke’s at 4 o’c. Cabs 2/. Miss Rose Innes came & stayed to tea till we dressed.

Saturday 20 January Out morg. shop’g. with Maud. After lunch went to Mother’s & spent afternoon there, walked back. Agnes out to wedding. M. & self to bed early.

Sunday 21 January M. & self to 9.30 service, to Mother’s after. Sp. & Mervyn there. Walked there and back, lunched here. Alice out afternoon. Mr Bret Hart & Edgar came, both stayed some time. Blanche Cole to dinner.

Monday 22 January Miss Innes to Mrs. Dewar’s with me. Maud to Mrs. Rawlinson’s. Mervyn to dinner, & Miss Innes to dinner, 7.30. Had v. cozy little evg. Mervyn took Sylvinia home. Pouring wet day unable to go out. Miss Innes came to tea & stayed on to dinner.

Tuesday 23 January Mrs. a’Beckett’s dinner 8 o’c. Mistake. Lovely morg. M. drawing. Lin & Roy return fron Brookwood. We all dined here & went to Gaiety to see Don Juan. Roy overtired. Amusing variety piece, Roberts v. good. M. & self walked to Row morg. Home thro’ Kens. 2/10 cold cream, hair net & curlers.

Wednesday 24 January Maud goes by 4.7 fr. Earls Court to Putney Bridge to stay at Mrs. Schwann’s at Wimbledon for a dance & returns tomorrow. Invitation to tea Mr Guthrie & to dine & go to theatre with Miss Innes. Alice took Maud to Putney Bridge where Mrs. S’s carriage met her.

Thursday 25 January Roy returns to Eton. Pouring wet day. Maud returned fr. Mrs. Schwann’s, Agnes fetched her.

Friday 26 January Lovely day. X. Maud & self petit ami. To Comedy Theatre with S. Rose Innes morning performance.

Saturday 27 January Lin & self dine at Mr Sterne’s at 8 o’c. Met 2 Americans, Sir B.B, & Mr & Mrs. (blank) engineer. Excellent dinner & canvas back ducks. Used brougham with mare for first time for 5 weeks. Maud & Lin to “Little Christopher Columbus”, Mr Guthrie there. I too seedy to go. Mr & Miss Hook called. Maud dined with Miss Holland & went with her party to Criterion “Headless Man”. Miss Holland & Mr Carlisle brought her home.

Sunday 28 January Lin rode morning. Came in with roughness in throat. Mrs. Parr called & had tea. Mr Lockyer, Mr Guthrie & Mr Ryle & Miss Innes to dinner. All stayed till past 12. Very pleasant evg.

Monday 29 January Edie Buckmaster came to stay. Agnes & Maud met her at Victoria Station. Lin has another horrid cold. Lin rode morning in Row. Agnes took Maud & Edie to Olympia in brougham, Lin’s cold too bad to go.

Manager most kind & attentive, took them to see everything.

Tuesday 30 January Lin & self dine at Mrs. a’Beckett’s 8 o’c. Lin rode morning. Lin’s cold still v. bad. Mrs. Spofforth, Nelly K, Miss Eames, Mrs. & Miss Clerke & Mrs. du Maurier called. V. pleasant evg. at a’B’s. met Met Cap’t & Mrs. Childs, Mrs. Armstrong. Col (blank) v. charming man, Mr & Mrs. Munro. Emma out.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1894 Pouring wet day. Agnes out. Girls & self in all day. Lin’s cold v. bad.

Miss H. Young & Mrs. Purdie called. Quiet evg.

Thursday 1 Feb Lin & self dine at Mr Bret Harte’s & theatre after. Down to breakfast. I bought 6 glass cloths 2/5 Pontings & stayed all morg. with Mother. Oms 4d. Edie out all afternoon with Mr Sismey. Agnes took Maud & Edie to Daly’s theatre where we saw them in box opposite ours with Mr Bret Harte & Miss Innes. Most excellent dinner at Verreys. Oysters, soles, entrecôte with vegetables, marmite of fowl with potatoes & excellent salad, ices, coffee. Enjoyed play.

Friday 2 February Dull morg. Walked with 2 girls to Whiteleys, bought 12 claret glasses, 8 desert plates, 4 centre dishes, £1.1.1. Paid for them. Bought leather etc for self 9d & fruit 6d. After lunch called with 2 girls in brougham on Miss Holland, Webster, Enthoven, Medley, Sterne, Hall & Kemp. Lin’s cold still very bad. Day warm as spring.

Saturday 3 February Lovely day. Maud & Edie to town by om to have chain put on bracelets.

To shops. Lin working till 1 o’c. M, Edie & self to matinée Drury Lane. Mr Sismey met us there & walked back with Edie. M. & self came in brougham & bought 2 lbs of sausages. Fritz called.

Sunday 4 February Edie, M. & self to 9.30 service. Walked to Memorial with them & then sat with Mother, much better & seems nearly herself again. No one called.

Lin had long ride morning. Mr Stone dined with us evg. & was very talkative & amusing.

Monday 5 February Mrs. Oswald Crawfurd’s dinner 8 o’c. Pouring wet morg. Miss Fruger(?) called. Edie & Maud to Olympia with 2 Mr Sismeys at 3 o’clock. Went. Mr 11

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1894 Sismey returned to tea here. 20 to dinner Mrs. C’s. Lady D. Neville, Mr C. Praed, Mr Northcote, Mr & Mrs. Yates Thornton & lovely Mrs. (illeg) Mr & Mrs. Earle, Boughtons etc.

Tuesday 6 February Maud dines at Mrs. Mocatta’s ¼ to 8 o’c. Edie to dinner with Mr Sismey at Mrs. Mackenzie’s. Only Miss Eames called. Pd. her 5/3 for guitar strings. Out in Park morg. with 2 girls. Met Lin, Alexander, B. Hollingshead. M. very seedy & limp complained of pain in throat. Edie out calling all afternoon with Mr Sismey. Mrs. Mackenzie ill so Edie dined here alone with Lin & self. Maud enjoyed herself immensely. They danced after & about 20 couples were there.

Wednesday 7 February Mr Guthrie’s tea fight 5 o’c. Maud Campbell Praed to luncheon. Maud & Edie to theatre with Mr Sismey. Went to L. & C. Bank about sale of Venezuela & money invested in Glasgow & S.Western Rly Ord. Cab to & from theatre 5/-. Only Mrs. Rawlinson & daughter at Mr Guthrie’s. Called on Aunt Linda & Mrs. Holmes, met Auntie at the Holmes’s.

Thursday 8 February Mr Sismey dines here. Walked in Park with girls, met Mr Stone, Mrs. Warre, Sterne, Heilbuts, Lewis etc. Rested afternoon. Miss C. Praed called. Maud & Edie saw her. Mr Sismey dined here & we all went to see “Eutopia”. V. amusing, had stage box.

Friday 9 February Mr Ryles tea fight 4.30 at The Studios Thurloe Square. Lovely day. Large party at Mr Ryle’s. Lady M. & her sister, Miss Taylor & all the Tressady gentlemen. Excellent tea etc, & interesting talk with Lady D. Rycroft.

Mrs. Reeve & friend there also.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1894 Mrs. Gordon at home 4 - 7. Hugely dull, knew no one but Schwanns & Sir W. & Lady Flower who arrived as we were leaving. Called on Edgar & Sophy at 4 Princes St, Hanover Sq. & Mrs. Eykyn. Lin lunched in town, had Turk. B. dined at Club & joined Edie, Maud & self at Comedy Theatre evg. “Dick Sheridan” by Buchanan, good & bad. X. Received Banker’s or broker’s receipt for sale of Venezuela stock, & bought Glasgow S. Western.

Sunday 11 February To early service with Maud & Edie. I on alone to Mother’s. Eff there & walked back with me as far as Vic Rd. Mr Sismey to luncheon, took Edie out after & returned at 6 o’c. B.W, Edgar, Capt & Mrs. Childs called. Lin rode morning.

Monday 12 February Lunch Lady M’s with Maud 1.30. Lady Blomfield’s at home. Edie leaves at 3.15 with Agnes for Pad. St. 2/- to Agnes for cab. Edie & Maud for long walk morg. M. & self by Om to Berkeley St. Had tea with Lady M, unable to go to luncheon. Met 2 ladies, & Mr F. Wallop there. Walked on to Mrs. Dewar’s found them at tea & had some real Japanese tea excellent. Light in colour & much nicer than ordinary. Quite charmed with their lovely rooms filled with (illeg) in furniture pictures & art treasures generally, looking like an old Italian palace only more comfortable. Prof D. most kind in showing us everything.

Tuesday 13 February Maud lunched at Miss Enthoven’s 1.30. Out morg. shopping alone, tooth paste 1/2, flowers 1/-, M’s fare 1/6. Lovely day, v. cold wind. Plumber fr.

Nash’s busy working for Lin. Maud working at her poem illustration!

Sophy, Effie, Mrs. Spofforth, Alice L, Mrs. & 2 Miss Enthoven, Hogarth, Capt Heathorn, Molesworth, Miss Roe & Mrs. Hammond, Mrs. Joachim & Dolly called. Lin, M. & self to see “Caste” evg. Miss Rorke not good.

Forbes Robertson & Anson both good.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1894 Wednesday 14 February Read “Bleak House” to Maud & went at 11 o’c with Mrs. Spofforth to see Mattei(?) Hospital. Seems extraordinary the cures they have had!

Walked there & back. Called at 3.30 with Maud on Mrs. Sington, Leech, O. Crawfurd, Lynn Linton, C. Matthews, Woodall, Harding, McLaren. Had tea with McLaren & Crawfurd, left papers for Mother. Lin had Turkish Bath & went after Punch dinner to Ball at A. Harris (masked) some one whispered to him “Why are you here without your wife?” thinks it was Mrs. Bankes Tomlin!

Thursday 15 February Wet morg. Read to Maud & mended. Called after lunch on Mrs. a’Beckett & Mother, Edgar & Mervyn there. Lin hard at work all day.

Friday 16 February Mrs. Child’s tea 4.30. Lovely morg. In all morg. reading. Lin hard at work on drawing & yesterday also. Called at 3.30 with Maud on Mrs. Mocatta, Parish, & to tea at Mrs. C’s, dull to distraction. Purnall drove vilely always jagging at mare for his own faults. Read to Lin & Maud. Spencer & Ada called. Agnes took dear Roy’s clock to post with etc for me, & to enquire after Mother.

Saturday 17 February Miss Campbell Praed to luncheon. Lin lunched at club. V. wet day, finished his work at 12 o’c. & met us at Prince of Wales Theatre “Gaiety Girl”. Mervyn also joined us there. Hayden Coffin sang exquisitely & has much improved, is much stouter. Monkhouse v. amusing, rest tame & not funny or (illeg). Miss Praed’s carriage met us at theatre, found Maud & I could understand her v. fairly well & could make her understand us.

Sweet expression of face & seems intelligent. Quiet evg. at home.

Sunday 18 February Lovely day. M. & self to Church 9.30 service. On to see dear Mother after. Met Mr & Mrs. Tait on way home thro’ flower walk. Percy O. & wife 14

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1894 lunched here & stayed till 4 o’c. Sp. came in after. Like Mrs. O. v. much, seems v. natural & pleasant & they seem very happy together. No one called.

Monday 19 February Mrs. H. Levy’s dinner 8 o’c. Lady Bloomfield’s at home 9 - 12. Lin Maud & self walked 11.30 through Park, v. v. cold & bright, to Burlington House “Old Masters”. 5 delightful Turners, 4 of Petworth Pk, 2 Romneys, 2 Canalettos, 2 Walkers quite lovely. Jan Steen’s pleased us most. Saw Blake’s mad productions. Lunched at St J’s. To New Gallery, most uninteresting, Grafton, Lin delighted with Gallery more than pictures, met Orchardsons & thro’ Japanese collection, interesting no doubt to those who understand, we don’t! Met Mrs. Schlessinger, Trower, & saw Sir H. Thompson there. Dinner at Mrs. L’s more amusing than usual, Mr Stenning took me in, a Christian! Talkative & pleasant tho’ v. plain. Had funny little Dutch doll wife 3 hairs curled in front & 3 behind! Maud much admired. Too cold to go on to Lady B’s.

Tuesday 20 February Edgar & Sophy dine here. Box for Court “Transgressor”. X. My little F. Lin & Maud walked to Hyde Pk Corner. I did little shop’g in Kens. morg.

Mrs. Holl, Mrs. & Miss Warre, Miss Harcourt called. Edgar & So. ½ hour late, rather hurried dinner. Enjoyed “Transgressor” after.

Wednesday 21 February Rosalind Watney to tea. X. Maud’s little F. In bed till 12.30. Lady M. came with Nurse & Baby, stayed some time. Baby much grown & talks more when alone with Maud. Mrs. Spielman called. M. & self quiet evg. Alice out.

Thursday 22 February In bed till 12.30. Drove afternoon to Aunt Linda’s. Met Carrie H, long talk with her. To Mrs. du Maurier’s, tea there. Sylvia, May, Gerald, & Mons. &

Friday 23 February In all day as carriage could not be had. Maud & Lin both hard at work all day, read to both.

Saturday 24 February Dear Roy home till Monday. Lovely day, warmer. Lin at work till 1 o’c.

Maud & Roy to matinée of “Dick Sheridan”. We all 4 went after dinner to see “The Charlatan”. V. good & well acted all round.

Sunday 25 February To Mrs. Lindo’s for luncheon 1.45. Pouring wet day. Lin & Roy rode, Lin on hired horse, did well! Mr Lindo called & insisted on our all lunching there. We all 4 went in 4 wheel cab. Only Dundas Gardiner & young Mr Lindo & friend Mr Rhodes there. Mr Ryle, Mr Cosworth(?) & Edgar called.

Monday 26 February Rained all afternoon, unable to have carriage. Arranged book case with Lin on stairs. Dear Roy returned to Eton 9.30. Maud & self walked to Mrs. V. Coles evg, so warm & close. Sp. called morning. Lin rode.

Lin, Mary & self to Lyceum after dinner. Out morg. walking with Maud & Lin & obliged to go in to Mother’s as it rained. Lin rode after breakfast. Saw Nellie K. at Lyceum.

Friday 2 March Lovely morning. Maud & Mary up Row. Shop’d in Kens. Afternoon Mary & M. in brougham to call on Mrs. Pickering & Mrs. Hunt & round Row. I went alone called on Mrs. Huish, Coward, & had tea at Mrs. Joachim’s, met interesting lady there & had long book talk with her. Quiet evg.

Saturday 3 March Mervyn fetched Mary & Maud & took them to Row. Mary lunched at Mrs. Schuster’s & Maud with Mother & all met Lin & self at Lyric. “Little Christopher Columbus”. V. good. Yoké charming & Lowner(?) intensely funny. Quiet evg.

Sunday 4 March Mary dines at Savoy with Mr & Mrs. Schuster. Lovely day. Lin rode morg.

Will Oakes & Spencer dined here. Most uncomfortable dinner. Sp. came too early & told Will dinner here 7.30 instead of 8. Altogether general muddle, Sp. jerky & W.O. restrained. Mary came back early as they dined at Berkeley Hotel instead of Savoy. Maud, Mary & self walked in Park early at 12 o’c. Immense crowds never remember it fuller. Met B.W. who walked with Maud. Mary left us surrounded by gentlemen & lunched at Mrs. Dutton Hunt’s. Mr Fowler called to see Mary. Young Thompson, Bret Harte & Sp. called.

Tuesday 6 March Mrs Pickering’s drawing room tea. Effie Harrison here at 11.50. Agnes took her & Maud to Row & to lunch. Mary off to rink alone. In bed till 12.30, feel better but v. shaky. Mrs. Mackenzie & a Miss Mackenzie called. Maud & Mary to 2 Drawing room teas. Adventure with carriage, Purnell detected man in time, he drop’d the things taken. I went with rest to Criterion to see “Headless man”. Mary saw two sets of friends there!

Wednesday 7 March Lovely day. Mary & Maud gone shop’g, home at 2. Maud quite done up & no shop’g for me done. Mary & self calling, to Mrs. Gilbert’s, met Mrs. Blunt & pretty dau. who flirted with Gilbert, & Mrs. Crutchley as lovely as ever & looking a mere child. Had long talk with her. She asked after Maud who they all thought pretty.

Thursday 8 March Asked 8 to dinner 8 o’c. Col Welby, Mr & Lady Margaret Watney, Mr A. Cecil Blunt, Mr Moulton & Miss Thomson. To stores at 10 o’c with Maud, did entire shop’g. Mary back at 4 & went with Maud to Mr Thomson’s where Oscar W. devoted his attention to Maud & was most kind. Mrs. Pickering called. Anchovies. Clear soup. Salmon. Marmite of pigeons.

Roast lamb, tomato salad, peas. Roast chicken salad. Orange jelly.

Soufflé of coffee. Soft herring roes, cheese etc. Dinner went off all right.

Mary & Maud had theirs in morg. room. Mr Moulton & Col. Welby v. entertaining at dinner. Mr Blunt sang, but the audience was not sympathetic. All left at 12 o’c.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1894 Mrs. de la Rue’s dinner 8 o’c. Mary Nicol left. Went with her at 12 o’c to change lamp shades, boots. Left Mary for few moments at Mother’s. M. left at 3 o’c. Mr Walker took me in to dinner at Mrs. de la R’s. V. interested in him, & so like Mervyn. Mr & Mrs. Alma Speed there.

Excellent dinner. Heard about the “Souls”. Oysters. Soup with thin shreds of salad. Salmon. Quails farcie. Cold fillets of tongue. Roast lamb, vegts. Asparagus. Ham & vegts. A sweet. Strawberry soufflé.

Savoury etc. Ices.

Saturday 10 March Miss Clerke at home. Unable to go. Read to Lin morg. & went alone with him in brougham to St James’ Theatre. Saw “Mrs. Tanqueray”. Mrs. Mackenzie met us there. Enjoyed play immensely, even better than first time. Drove Mrs. M. back, gave me eggs for Lin! He went to Club & home for dinner. Maud busy at her pink dress the entire day.

Sunday 11 March Mrs. Joachim at home 9.45. Dull morg. High wind. Lin gone to Club for lunch, rides if fine at 2. Maud & I took walk in Gardens. B.W. & Mr Richards called. Lin walked to Club & lunched there & rode after. Mr Bernard Partridge came to dinner. Maud & I went alone to Mrs. Joachim’s. Dr Joachim played magnificently with Piati, & again with Lady Hallé. Delightful evg. Tademas, Dickens, G.Lewis’s etc. V. crowded.

Mr Joachim took me to supper & amused me vastly grumbling at everything.

Monday 12 March Lady Blomfield at home 9 - 12 o’c. Had first cat destroyed. Maud & self to stores bought myself 3 coms 14/9 each, guitar book & music 2 of A.Cecil’s songs 4/10. Maud went with Miss Holland to Olympia & party.

Thursday 15 March Mrs. Rawlinson’s dinner 8 o’c. Maud dines at Mrs. Pollack’s 8 o’c. I lunch at Mrs. C. Mathews 2 o’c. Cab to Queen Anne’s M’s 2/-. X. Took 1st guitar lesson 11-12. 14 to lunch at Mrs. Mathews amongst others H. Younge, Mrs. Berringer, Lynn Linton, Mrs. A.Lewis, Mrs. C. Burnand, Mrs. Gab etc. Major Welman called. Much aged. Remained to tea.

Friday 16 March Mrs. Goodall’s at home 3 to 7. Great crowd. Met Miss Levy, Mrs. Stone etc but to me distinctly dull party. Called on Olive, Mrs. Farquharson, Holland etc.

Saturday 17 March Mrs. Fairfax Rhodes dinner 8 o’c. Mr Ryle’s pictures on view. Maud & I went to Woollands. I ordered blouse. Lin to Club for luncheon. Col. Makins took me in to dinner, do not care for him, but was interested in hearing his vy. Conservative view especially on Deceased wife’s sister’s bill. Thinks the constitution would be overturned before altering House of Lords. V. pleasant dinner, about 24.

Shop’g with Maud, fitted with dinner jacket Woollands & blouse. To Redfern’s where Maud ordered hat 10/6, Barkers 4 yds of rib. Wrote to thank Bret Harte for book. Mrs. Allan Cole & Mrs. Alma Speed called.

Thursday 22 March Maud goes by 3.20 fr. C. X. to Ramsgate, see her off. Roy returns fr.

Eton. Roy & self saw M. off, met Mrs. S. & Edie B. at C. X. Paid for green blouse at Woollands, £1.19.0. Pd. Vickery 1/6, M’s flowers & 1/1½ tie for Emma. Lin finished drawing.

Sunday 25 March Most lovely day, brilliant sunshine & very warm. Sat out all morg. with Tabs, Bee & Mervyn. After luncheon played golf with Roy who is getting keen on what he called at first “footling game”! At 3.30 went with Bee to Mrs. Seymour Hayden’s in small cart. Had tea there & saw Mr H’s sorting(?) of etchings. Roy v. funny at dinner. Amusing letter fr. Maud, v. happy & having good time.

Monday 26 March Most lovely day, brilliant sun & as hot as August. Out all day. Mrs. Seymour Hayden jnr. to tea & golf. Think her quite pretty, v. like a cross between Mrs. Fagan & Miss Taylor. Lin looking better but think him pale.

Roy a little lame with one ankle.

Tuesday 27 March Lovely day. Sat out all morg. & afternoon. After tea Bee, Tabs & self had a long walk. H. & Mervyn off early to see yacht near the Hook, Farnham.

Wednesday 28 March Lovely day, out all morning. Lin & H. playing golf. Long letter fr. Maud with ac’t of M. O’Connell having to leave for a time & two others getting in trouble! Drove in shaky cart for 2 hrs with Bee. Quite lovely & enjoyed the country drive.

Thursday 29 March Lin, Roy & self return to London by 1 o’c train. Lovely day. Went to Palace Theatre, saw “Performing dogs” & “Tableaux” both excellent, rest deadly dull. Marie Loftus song fairly good “What should sister Mary do?”

Saturday 31 March Lovely morning. Wrote & did books all morg. Went & fetched Maud at 12.15 fr. C. X. Sta, she came up alone from Ramsgate. Went after lunch to see “Eutopia” in carriage. Lin & Roy had Turkish bath after. Mr Finlay came to our box. Mrs. Rider Haggard & Mr Bret Harte called. Quiet dinner here.

Sunday 1 April Maud & self to early church, to Mother’s after. Walked home. Met Janet Lewis, no Lucy. Lin & Roy rode mare & Cob, met Mrs. Coward at Richmond. Sp, Col. & Mrs. O’Callaghan & G. Nicol called.

Monday 2 April Maud goes by 10.30 to Effie’s for few days, saw her off. G. Nicol dined here & went to see “The World” with us. Horrid atmosphere at Princess Theatre.

Tuesday 3 April In carriage at 10.30 to Marshall Snelgroves, Buttericks, & stores. Roy twice at club. Mrs. Rider Haggard & Lucy Lewis called, v. amusing girl.

Maud & Mad’lle out morg. for walk. Dear Maudie v. weepy all day, 1st about shoes & then about being late. Lin walked to Mrs. Praed’s. I left M. at Agnews & arrived early at Norfolk Sqr. Met Mr & Mrs. Boyd fr.

Pulboro’, Mr de Finblanc, David Murray, Mrs. Alexander novelist & dau. married to Frenchman, & 2 ladies. Maud met Mr Guthrie & another gentleman.

Friday 13 April Maud goes to Mrs. Buckmaster at Tunbridge Wells by 3.55. I saw her off in a carriage to herself, danger signal v. conspicuous on window “Ladies only”. Called on Mrs. Lucy, Lilly, Quinton Twiss, cards of sympathy to Mrs. Waring, & had tea with Mother. Roy out entire day. Lin & self anxious about him. He arrived at 6.30, had been at Banbury’s, beaten all 3 boys at billiards & rode home S. Square on bicycle. Roy dined 7 & went off to see “Frou Frou” with young Banbury on bus, they return by cab.

Monday 16 April In bed till 12.30. Heavy showers. Lin rode afternoon. Roy fetched by Banbury fr. club! Lunched there & saw missing man “Scott” alias Sweeney! I called at 3.30 on Florence Blair & Ad. Brine(?). To Effie Harrison & took her with me to Mrs. Reeve & Mother. Home here to tea.

Tuesday 17 April Heavy showers. Alice Linley & Mary Carter to luncheon. Felt v. ill all day.

Maud received cheque for £8.8.0 for her 4 drawings illustrating “Thalia House” poem. Received 2 letters fr. Maud.

Thursday 19 April Mrs. Purdie at home 9.30, 27 Palace Court. Miss Holland at home 8.30 Niddry Lodge. Unable to go to either. Lin with bad cold.

All 3 went at 4.30 to Mrs. Morton Latham’s at home. V. good music. Met Miss Webster. Called & enquired for Eddie Boehm & looked at 3 dreadful lodgings for Mrs. Paxton. Mrs. Rider Haggard called. Quiet evg. Lin’s cold v. bad.

Saturday 21 April Turned out drawers all morg. in schoolroom. At 3 o’c went by cab to Maskelyn’s & Cooke . V. good handkerchief trick & memory. To tea at Mr Stone’s. As conceited as ever in his solitary glory, minus Tommy who had departed or been stolen. On to Tabbie’s in carriage. Lin walked home. Tabs wonderfully well. H. been out with 2 children to zoo, came home whilst we were there. Montfort Sayel(?) called.

Sunday 22 April Cold but fairly fine, sun out at 12. I left Effie at Carmelite & walked on to Mother’s where she joined me later & we walked home. Mervyn & Mother alone. Lin rode morg. His cold still bad, he won’t take care of himself.

Monday 23 April Maudie returns at 10.25 Charing X. Met M. & Mr Sismey. Went for stroll in Kens with M. Met Mrs. Lewis & small dog! Called after lunch. Went to see “Mrs. Lessingham” at Hare’s theatre, well acted but v. bad & foolish piece.

Tuesday 24 April Tabs & H. here to dinner. Out morg. shops. Effie Harrison left evg. Effie Herapath morg & Miss Burgess called. Maud had long letter fr. W. B. last evg! 8 pages. Went to Prince of Wales’ saw “Gaiety Girl”. Tabs thought she had lost her brooch. V. wet night.

Saturday 28 April Mrs. Walter Crane 8.30 to 11.30. Lin working all day v. tired. Miss Gill came after lunch & went to Private View New Gallery with us. V. v. crowded. Burne Jones pictures very interesting. Lovely landscape by A. Parsons. V. pretty portrait of v. pretty Mrs. Crutchley by Hallé. Forbes Robertson by unknown artist (to me!) Met Santly, Fagans, Finlays, A. Blunt, Sir E. & Miss Reed, etc etc.

Sunday 29 April Lin with Two Pins Club, lunched Star & Garter. Maud & self walked with Mervyn up Row & sat there all morg. We lunched after with Mother & returned here 3 o’c in cab, 1/-. Mr & Mrs. Dick, young Thomson & Miss Rose Innes called. Mr Thomson remained on to dinner, left at 10.10. Sp. at Mother’s also.

Wednesday 2 May Maud goes to dance with Mrs. Carlisle & Miss Holland. Lady M. & Rosalind to tea. Mervyn & Tabbie here. Tabbie to luncheon. Maud & Basil Paxton called. Lin left early. I went at ¼ past 9 to Woolland to be fitted. Went with Maud after to see Midge’s rooms, & to Mother’s. V. tired.

Thursday 3 May To Miss Mackenzie’s if fine. Lovely afternoon. Went by 2.40 in carriage alone, Maud too tired after last night’s dance. Ticket to Bookham ret. 1/9!

Miss M. met me in dog cart at Sta. Her nephew only with her. Had charming afternoon in the lovely country. She drove me to Station & I came up by 7.2, home exactly at 8.30 for dinner.

Friday 4 May Private View Academy. Drawing room tea Mrs. Cohen’s. Maud goes with Mrs. Orchardson to Royal Academy Students Ball. All went in carriage together to P.V. Academy, met no end of friends. Maud dined at Mrs. O’s & went with her to dance, Mervyn also. Home at 3.30 morning, Alice sat up. Maud met her mysterious admirer Dr Harley.

Maud & I met Fritz at Waterloo with Mr Pell, young American gentleman.

V. amusing & in appearance like Harry Burnand only much darker. We travelled together, brougham met us. Mr & Mrs. Ionides also at Fritz. He v. good looking son of Constantine I, only been married 3 weeks! She decidedly taking, looks older than he, a cross between Alice (maid) & Anna Dietz. Sings divinely, music all evening. V. jolly little party.

Sunday 6 May Lovely day, much colder than in London. Mr Ionides & Fritz off directly after breakfast to Woking for Golf. Mr Pell, Maud & self for walk thro’ pretty Cobham village. Left them & returned alone. Went into church.

Wrote 3 letters after. Quiet afternoon. Lin arrived on Cob about 5. Had lunched at Hampton C. with “Two Pins Club”. Fritz & Mr Ionides returned in time for tea. Delightful evg. Mrs. Ionides sang for two whole hours, Fritz played. Missed Wirgmans, Stanhope Forbes, Davis, Dyce & Flowers here at Staff. Ter.

Monday 7 May Return fr. Fritz. Lin dines at Garrick & goes with Tenniel, Milliken & a’Beckett to Avenue Theatre to see Mr Partridge act. Supper at Mr Stones’ after! Returned with Mrs. Ionides & Mr Pell. Left Maud at Mother’s, came on here with boxes & joined Maud at Mother’s for luncheon. On with Mervyn to Midge, out, took cab to Tab’s, saw Midge & Dora there, latter much grown, not so handsome as she promised but at an awkward age. M. & self walked to Knightsbridge & om’ed home.

Midge looks v. well, not grey.

Tuesday 8 May Maud goes to Miss Holland’s dance with Maud Paxton. Maud P. coming for night. Two Mauds & Agnes out for walk morg. Dora here for day. I went out morg. shop’g. Paid 1/- flowers. Mrs. Flower, Mrs. Levy, Mrs. Burnand & Mary, Tabs, Mervyn, 2 Leche girls, B. W, Miss Walton called.

Wednesday 9 May Maud to luncheon at Mr C. Mathews, Midge & Dora called. Paid over £58.12.6 to Midge & gave her her papers etc. Mrs. Paxton & two girls fetched Maud. Fetched Maud at 3 o’c took Rosie B. home & stayed a little while at Mrs. Burnand’s, called on Mrs. Gordon. Mr Dyce, Ethel, Auntie & Mrs. Holmes called.

Thursday 10 May Tea at Mrs. Lucy’s. Pouring wet day. V. cold. Out morg. shops, changed £1 cheque for self bought pk. rib. for red velvet 5/9, tapes, cottons etc 1/. Afternoon went to Woollands & Stores. Called at Mrs. Lucy’s, found her sister & Miss Reed there. Called & saw Midge & H, stayed some time.

Left little cream cheese at Mother’s & home. Mr Pell called, sorry to miss him.

Friday 11 May X. Petit ami, malheur. Called & saw dear Mother & left cards on Mrs Burnand. Pouring wet & cold. Lin finished work.

Saturday 12 May Lin, Maud & self go to Mrs. Winchester Clowes till Tuesday, D.V. Came by 5 o’c train. Found all well here, Mrs. Clowes looking much stronger.

10 to dinner evg. V. wet morg. Lovely evg & afternoon but v. cold.

Sunday 13 May Glorious day. Sat out with Miss Bromhead all morg. whilst rest were at church. Sat out all afternoon, tea on lawn. Electric machine evening, v. good fun with it. X. Tabbie’s baby boy born ¼ to 7 o’clock.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1894 Lovely day. Drove with Mrs. Winchester Clowes, Maud & Eily to farm house & woods. Had tea at lovely old farm house. Lin & Mrs. Clowes rode, & were out to luncheon. Mistake, tomorrow. (repeat of Monday, written on the Tuesday page) Lovely day. In bed to breakfast. Sat out morg. Lin & Mr Clowes had long ride & were out to lunch. Mrs. C, Maud, Eily & self drove in Victoria to a lovely old farm house & had tea there thro’ beautiful scenery & country. Maud & Eily gathered May hedges.

Mrs. C. & self drove to Mr Clowes cottage & to Lord Caithness’s house.

Lovely place but looks so (illeg) no one there. Banburys had it 2 years.

Dinner party evg. Mr Gosling, Mr Seebohm, Mr & Mrs. Hughes, v. pretty woman, etc.

Tuesday 15 May (Monday written on this page) Lovely day, sat out all morg. Returned home by 12.15 train. Lin rode after lunch. Maud arranged flowers, quantities. Miss Rose Innes, Mr Pell & Mrs. Lindo called. Maud Lin & self went to Haymarket evg. Saw “A bunch of Violets”. I liked it, Lin & M. not. Mr & Mrs. Tree excellent in it.

Rather spoilt by young girl with tremendous nose which was so conspicuous one could think of nothing else when one looked at her.

Wednesday 16 May Out morg. to Midge, Dora ret’d lunch & afternoon here & saw Mother & Sp. Midge & self shop’d all afternoon. Purnal most impertinent, not fit for a gentleman’s servant. Agnes took Dora back, Midge & H. at Uncle Edwin’s.

Thursday 17 May Asked H. & Jess, Mr Pell. Postponed. Lin & self dine with Miss Rose Innes at Berkeley & go with her to see “Little Christopher Columbus”.

Mrs. Carlisle at home Guildford House, Putney Hill. Miss Rose Innes asked us to dine at Berkeley & go with her & Mde. (blank) lovely Chilean to see “Yoké” again. Go to supper at Mr Weedon Grossmith’s after play.

Lovely Chilean lady at Miss Rose Innes, Mr Stubbs, Mr & Mrs Robertson & another gentleman. Had 2 boxes on grand tier. Great crush at Weedon 32

Friday 18 May Mrs. Torrens dinner 8 o’c. Maud goes to Lady Margaret’s. Out morg. shop. to be fitted with grey tailor dress Barkers. Maud doing drawing.

Took Maud to Waterloo, met Sir W. & Lady Flower who promised to look after her at Basingstoke. Lovely day. Home by bus 4½d. Met Mrs. Coward who spoke of Mr C’s illness & absolute necessity of change.

Saturday 19 May Box for Globe “Charley’s Aunt”. Ham, Midge & Fritz dining here & going with us. Out morg. bought flowers. Lin rode after luncheon. I practiced & worked. Enjoyed “Charley’s Aunt” v. much. Stalls v. empty & boxes but good pit & gallery.

Sunday 20 May Mrs. C. Mathews at home 5 o’c. Out morg. to dear Mother’s. Lin rode. Sp. & Hilda to lunch & tea. Sp. to dinner. Mr & Mrs. & Maud Paxton, Mrs. Sington & son, & Tilda called. Sp. stays so late!

Monday 21 May Dine with Miss Rose Innes at Bristol at ¼ to 7 o’c. & see the “Masqueraders” at St. James’ after. Concert at the Queen’s Hall 3.30.

Dull. Lisa Lehmann best she sang “Fleur aimé” Thomàs. V. good dinner at Bristol. Met Mr Stubbs, Mr Forbes Robertson, Mr & Mrs. Galbraith.

Play excellent, improbable but most interesting. Alexander sent us up tea. Cab fr. concert 2/-. Out morg. shop’g. Lady M. brought Maud back herself & sent her box by Emily.

V. cold, fires everywhere. Went in carriage at 12 bought 3 salmon cutlets 1/6, cakes 1/6, Whiteleys & paid china bill there 10/2½. Mr & Mrs. Paxton & 2 chicks, Mr & Miss Dyce, 2 Miss Warres, Mrs. Tweedie & sister, B.W, Mrs. Steincopff, called. Sp. came to dinner & stayed till 11.30. Called & saw Tabbie morg. & Baby. Tabs looks delicate. Pretty baby.

Wednesday 23 May Sir R. & Miss Webster’s dance 10 o’c. Mrs. Wirgman’s at 4.30. To Tabbie’s, looks like a pretty (illeg) doll. To dressmaker & Mrs. Wirgman’s. Great many there, good singing & playing. V. dull cold day.

Mad’lle to supper. Throat bad & feel v. seedy. Maud Paxton to dance with Maud, 300 there. They enjoyed it immensely. Lin fetched them.

Thursday 24 May Two Mauds go to luncheon at Mrs. Paxton’s, & on to Temple Gardens flower show. Sunny & warm. Out morg. alone by bus to Regent Circus, bought purse 3/9, hair pomade 1/6, fare 8d. My voice ridiculous comes & goes, throat better. Called at 3.40 on Miss Thomson, met Mrs. O. Crawfurd, Col. & Mrs. Maxwell (she Col. Welby’s sister). Midge’s, had tea with her, Tilda there & Mrs. Alan Cole. Met Mauds at Temple. Lovely day.

B.W. as usual in evidence. Quiet evg. Called on Mrs. Galbraith.

Friday 25 May Tea at Miss Thorneycroft’s 4.30. Tea at Mrs. Dyce’s. Out shop’g morg. To Row with two M’s, cab 1/6.Walked home. Lin rode before breakfast.

Called at 3.30 on M(illeg), Percy Macquoid, Purdie, Ladies Richmond & Lucas, Mrs. H. Dickens, Mrs. Dyce where we had tea & music, & Miss Thorneycroft pictures & tea! Variety.

Lin rode with Two Pins Club & lunching at Mr Gilbert’s, W.S. Fine afternoon. Mr, Mrs. & Maud Paxton, Mr Hook & Miss Rose Innes called. Sp. & Hilda to lunch & tea. Lin not in till 7.15. Terrible tapage avec l’homme des équ(illeg) il s’en ira Samdi, a la bonheur. I sat between 2 Grossmiths, near Mr Burnand. 18 to dinner. V. noisy & familiar party. Mr G’s foolish jokes etc, did not enjoy it.

Monday 28 May Mrs. O. Crawfurd at home 10.30. Out morg. shops with Maud. Called at 3.30 on Mrs. Rawlinson, v. beautiful & grand. Married dau. very pretty, full stops prodominant! To Mrs. Alma Tadema’s, found crowds here, house or rather detached saloon lovely. Saw 2 pictures of Mr Tadema’s.

Miss Gill came to stay at 4.30. Quiet evg. Lin in all day. V. cold & wretched, more like ungenial October.

Tuesday 29 May V. cold, bright. Lin rode early. Mrs. Speed etc called. Out morg.

Wednesday 30 May Mrs. de la Rue’s musical at home 10.30. The Author’s Club entertainment 4 to 6.30 at 5 Whitehall Court S.W. Unable to go pouring rain. Saw several coachmen. I stayed in all afternoon. Clever Frenchman sang at Mrs. de la Rue’s, felt tired, did not enjoy party. Edward Lloyd, Ella Russel etc sang. Pouring rain. Walked after seeing moiree(?) Derry Toms to Tabbie’s, Mervyn there. Meet of Four in Hands, Park crammed.

Called on Mrs. Tweedie, Pollock, & Debenhams, ordered hat, rib, 2 prs gloves. Mr & Mrs. Galbraith, Mrs. Tweedie (Anne) Mrs. Macquoid, Mrs. Fagan called here. Cozy little dinner here 8.30, Miss Innes, Mervyn & Maud left at 11.30. Home at 3 o’c.

Down to see Maud in, enjoyed it immensely, Fritz there.

Friday 1 June Invitation to stay with Anna Dietz till Monday. Call for Miss Rose Innes ½ past 3, for calls. Mervyn & Stace here to be photoed. Maud & Gilly to Midge for tea. I called for Miss Rose Innes 3.30 & we called together on C. Hartree where I met Mrs. Jones who asked me to call, to Mrs. Dewar’s, had tea with her, Mrs. Lynn Linton, found Mr de Fonblanc there, v. interesting talk with him, & to Mrs. O. Crawfurd. Miss Gill & Maud to Comedy, “Frou Frou”.

Saturday 2 June Roy returned home for Exeat 1.30. Lin rode morg. Maud & Roy to see “Masqueraders”. Roy & I after dinner to see “Bunch of Violets”. V. good.

I fitted on my new dress here 10 o’c. Gilly left at 1 o’c, paid her 2/6, flowers 1/6.

Sunday 3 June Dull heavy warm. Mervyn called early for book for Tabbie. Dressed to go & see Mother, unable to go, poured. Wrote all morg. & afternoon. Lin & Roy to Sir A. Hickman’s for tennis. Lin dining at Garrick dinner to Lord Russell president of Two Pins Club. Not a soul called.

Monday 4 June Eton. Mr Ainger’s lunch party. Mrs. Armstead at home 4 to 6, 58 Chepstow Villas. Lady Hickman’s dinner, Maud, Lin & self. Roy dines at Mother’s & returns to Eton. Roy out at Oval afternoon. I went for last fitting of gown, Derry’s, & on to see Mother. Maud, Dora (who came for 36

Tuesday 5 June Mrs. Armstead at home 4 - 6. Mrs. Montefiore’s dinner 8 o’c for Lin, Maud & self. X. Petit ami au matin. Miss Reed, Mrs Carlisle & Miss Carlisle, Mary B, Effie Harrison, Mrs Reed, Mr Weigall & Tilda called.

Agnes took Maud out morning & arranged my flowers. Mr Spielman took me in to dinner, Mr Gardiner other side. 18 at table, Marcus Stones & Levys only others I knew there.

Wednesday 6 June Lady M. Watney’s dinner 8 o’clock. Maud & Lin to “Derby” with Mr D’Arcy’s party. Midge & Dora called morg, former sat with me. Dinner of 20 Lady M’s. Sir Redvers & Lady Audrey Buller, Lady Mabel & Miss Howard, Mrs. Maxwell v. pretty woman. Mr Buxton took me in v. like B. W. Epping Forest! Pretty wife who knew it. Several others. Table charming, moss roses in silver bowls & along table. V. pretty.

Thursday 7 June Lady Bergne’s dinner 8 o’c. Maud dines alone. In bed till 12.30. V. tired.

Midge & Dora to luncheon & tea. V. charming dinner at Lady B’s, 10 only. Cap’t Agar took me in. V. good looking man in War Office, pretty wife. Lovely silver & marguerites on table.

Friday 8 June Mrs. Macmillan’s dinner 8 o’c. Only Lin & self. Mary Nicol, Mrs. N. & Mrs Thorneycroft called. V. tired. Mr Wedderburn took me in, entirely forgot who he was! Mr & Mrs. O. Crawfurd there. V. pleasant evg. Table lovely, yellow & mauve flowers.

Sunday 10 June Lin & members of “Two Pins” all lunch at Lord Rosebery’s at the Durdans. Maud & self went to fetch Mother & sat with her in Gds. op.

Memorial. She seemed v. tired after. Tilda here for day. Ethel English & Mr West & Miss Rose Innes to tea. Latter stayed with Tilda to supper.

Had delightful evening & afternoon with Ethel & Miss Rose Innes’ guitars.

Young Bucks to tea. I fetched Midge & called with her on English’s, Col Webber, left basket Mackenzies, Mrs. Williamson, Etherington, Twiss.

Tho’ Pk. home. Mervyn to dinner & took Maud. Lennie back. M. enjoyed dance immensely, home 3.30. Edie back 12.45. Mrs. Alma Tadema called, looked charming.

Friday 15 June Mrs. Steincopff’s dinner ¼ to 8. Tea at Mr Hartree’s 5 o’c. Lovely day , 2nd summer day. Walk in Pk. morg. Went in bus to C. Hartree’s after lunch.

Only Mrs. P(illeg) etc there, distinctly dull. Cab’d home, 2/6 with omnibus. Delightful evg. at Mrs. S. Mr S. took me in reminds me of Sir E. Reed. Spoke German together & he knows the Schliepers.

Saturday 16 June Mrs. E. Reed at home 4-7. Maud goes to tea with Miss Howard, 29 Burton St. Lovely day. Edie B. to lunch with Mr Sismey, Savoy & to see “Money” after. I drove M. to 29 Bruton St, Lady Audrey Bullar’s. Called on Tabs too seedy to see me, Mrs. Medley & Tilda, had tea there, saw Minnie Holland. Fetched Maud & drove to Mrs. Reed’s. Sir E. & Lady Reed there, Wirgman, Sir F. & Lady Branwell, Mrs. Burnand & Mary. V. nicely arranged at home. Quiet evg. here.

Sunday 17 June Mr Sismey dines here, can’t come. Mrs. Burnand’s at home 10.30. To church 9 o’c. To Mother’s, v. seedy. Mevyn came in. Angry with Maud for staying so late at Mrs. Messel’s. Sat after in Flower Walk. Lin rode morg.

Excellent luncheon at C.H’s. Corney Grain sang after stayed till 4.30, Lin with us. Went to Mrs. Rhodes, Cissy Loftus excellent. Messels there. Too tired after to go to H’s. Maud, Lin & Edie went. V. good at home. Ondin etc etc sang.

Tuesday 19 June Fanny Barker & Alice Linley to luncheon, & Miss Holl. Mrs. Alma Tadema at home 9 o’c. Maud & Edie to meet Miss Holl morning. Met her & walked in Row with J. Weigall. Cutlets & spinach. Ducklings & pears & new potatoes. Jelly. Cherry tart & cream. Cream cheese, radishes etc. Miss Holl left directly after luncheon. Only Rosie & C. B, Mr J. Weigall called.

Wednesday 20 June Maud lunches with Miss Williamson. Tea at Mrs. Percy Macqoid’s. Maud gone to Ascot with Mrs. English’s party. Pouring wet day but she enjoyed it immensely, met Cap’t Hickman. Dined at the E’s & ret’d 9.30.

Edie & I called & left beef tea at Mother’s. To Tabs, saw Mervyn & Ham, & to tea at Mrs. P. Macquoid’s. Most exquisite house.

Thursday 21 June Cup day, Ascot. Go to Effie for night. Maud lunches at Mrs. Lockwood’s 1 o’c. Came to Eff’s by 10.20 train, boys & Miss Fryer met me. Saw cottages & Mrs. Hawkins. Con looking v. seedy. Country exquisite.

Shakespear’s at home 4 - 7. Mrs. E.Pollock at home 4 - 7. Edie went to Hadley at ¼ to 10, her cab man drunk! & she had to take another on the road. Mr Sismey met her at Sta. Maud & self to Mrs. Carlisle’s, v. crowded, Thorndyke sang. Charming garden & v. delightful party, Russells, Donaldsons, Vicat Coles etc, & fr. there to Lady H’s. Met Mervyn & Midge just going when we arrived, Jane May & Palace Dogs gone! Saw a’Beckett Terrells, Calderon, Thorneysrofts, Nicols etc. Quiet evg. here. Mr Sismey brought Edie back.

Sunday 24 June Mrs. Jopling Rowe’s breakfast 12.30. Maud & Edie to Church & to lunch with Mother. Blanche Cole & Miss Holland to dinner 8 o’c. Miss Rose Innes also to dinner. Made dreadful mistake about hour of luncheon.

Went alone, Lin in too late, went to Club. Charming lunch, 9, met Mr Sladen had not met for years. Home by 3.30. Mr Kinderman, Miss R.Innes, Mr & Mrs. Farquhar, Miss Dyce & Miss Nicol called.

Monday 25 June V. hot. Maud & Edie to Row, met Mr Hartley & Mervyn. B.W. worried Maud, he wrote later reason! I shopped in Kensington. Monday 9 July Lin & self dine at the Bristol 7 o’clock sharp with Miss Rose Innes, & to see Mde. Réjane after in “Madame sans Gêne”. Two stalls for German Reeds. Tea at Dr Rhodes, M. & Bee went, & to German Reeds after. Party of 10 at Miss Rose Innes at Bristol. Prof. & Mrs. Dewar, rest as usual & Mrs. (illeg). Madame Réjane charming enjoyed play immensely, dresses both of men & women perfect in every detail. Saw Sir T & Lady Lawrence, Bessie H, Mrs. Millet & Mr Parsons, Mrs. R. Bingham, Mr Lehman, Mrs. Bridges etc. V. brilliant house.

Tuesday 10 July Maud dines at Dr Harley’s 8 o’c. Mrs. Sladen’s literary soirée 10 o’c.

Pouring with rain. Mr A. not impressed with M’s capabilities, too young. V. dull party Mrs. F’s. Had long talk with Mr F. about St Laurence & its people! Crowded party Lady N’s, met Mrs. Morley, Mrs. Tattersall, Mrs. Palmer etc. Rosa Leo sang charmingly little French song. Phonograph in waiting, v. tired of them!

Friday 13 July Lords, Eton & Harrow. Invitations to lunch at Mrs. Chinery, Mrs. Steincopff’s & Mrs. W. Hartree at Lords. Pouring rain. Roy arrived at 11.30, said nothing going on so foolishly did not go to luncheon at Lords, inpromtu lunch at home. Lin v. hard at work, did not dine till past 11 o’c. Roy, Eff, M. & self to see “The Candidate” house full of Eton & Harrow boys. Roy & Eff in cab, M. & self in brougham. Roy looking v. fairly well.

Saturday 14 July Mrs. E. Hart’s at home. Eton & Harrow match, Maud & Roy off early.

Heavy shower morg. but cleared rest of day. Lin & self went to Lords about 1 o’c. Lunched at Mrs. Steincopff’s. V. large party there, not comfortable. Joined Mr Hartree after who had waited for us, v. sorry.

Saw game splendidly from his break, stayed all afternoon with him & his party. Mr Mocatta, Col. & Mrs. & Miss Livesey & a charming clever girl & her brother, Miss Stacy & another lady & several gentlemen whose names I cannot remember. Excellent tea at 5 o’c. Unable to join Mrs. S’s party again. Met Tyrells, Clowes (Mrs. C. looking quite lovely)

Friday 27 July Woke up with dreadful noise outside, next door neighbour home at 5 this morg. in cab, great altercation between them. Out at 3 o’c to shops, Called & saw Mother, Consely Orton & Ernest there, both curious nasal twang in speaking, v. unpleasant to listen to. Was fitted with gown Russell & Allens. Chose hat at Redferns. Called & had tea at Mrs. Kemp’s, seems v. uncertain if pleased or not by Mona’s engagement! It was fairly time. Lin worked till 9.

Saturday 28 July Mr Hartree’s cricket match at Lords. M. & self went at 12.30 to Lords.

Col. Mrs. & Miss Livesay, Mrs. Newman & Miss Giles there of Mr H’s party. Excellent luncheon & v. pleasant sitting out watching the game.

Tea there & home by cab. Lin & self to see “Masqueraders”. Mrs. Alexander had Lady & Miss Jeune in her box. Lady Margaret Watney & Lady Rosalind Christie called. Feel vexed Alice looks so untidy to answer door Saty afternoons. Met the de la Rues at St James’ & Sir F. Haynes.

Sunday 29 July Maud to early service. Lin had short ride morg. To Sir A. Hickman’s for tennis about 4 o’c. Poured with rain directly after lunch & was as dark as Nov. in a fog. Winnie Lockyer here to luncheon & tea. Maud busy packing all afternoon. No one called.

Monday 30 July Mrs. Walter Crane 8.30 - 11.30. Maud goes to Mrs. Henderson at Buscot Park for cricket week by 12 o’c train fr. Paddington. Took her myself & saw her off. Several children & lady & gentleman in her carriage. Drove at 4.15 after standing to Lin in evg dress fr. Lewis & Allenbys. Took 48

Tuesday 31 July Miss Stephens coming for today & tomorrow. Do not think much of her or her work, undecided. Feel v. seedy. Drove at 6 to Mrs. Schwann’s & Mrs. Carlisle’s, latter in looking charming with her children.

Wednesday 1 August Called & took Mother for drive to Russell & Allens, & to Derrys. Miss Stephens did fairly well, skirt & flounces on M’s fancy dress.

Thursday 2 August Drove at 4 to Mother’s, called & had tea Lady Rosalind Christie’s. Met Mr Hartree, called Col. Welby. Roy arrived in time for breakfast. V. good report won his £2 of me. Lin upset fr. Punch dinner. Mr Milliken to dinner, stayed till 12!!! V. tired.

Friday 3 August Hot, fine. Packing. Letter fr. dear Maud enjoying herself vastly.

Saturday 4 August Travelled by 10 o’c fr. Kings Cross, left Staf. Ter. at 9. Long journey & train crowded previous to Bank Holiday. Met Mr Galbraith at York.

Travelled on with him to Ayton via Berwick where we were introduced to Mr & Mrs. Rae & their little son aged 12 who were also coming to Ayton Castle. Only other visitor Mrs. Anderson also a relative of our host & hostess. Most delightful house. V. large standing on a steep hill with exquisite views all round & built in red sand stone with the curious round towers peculiar to Scotch mansions. Most imposing building & lovely tennis lawns. Had long letter fr. dear Maud v. happy.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1894 Sunday 5 August Lovely day. Mrs. Galbraith, Mrs. Rae, little Rae, & the two wee ones & self to Church. New organ & v. pretty church, simple but inoffensive sermon on Mercy, safe subject! Far better than any I hear in London at 9 o’c! After luncheon went round stud saw 29 horses in all, v. interesting.

Sat in garden with Mrs. Galbraith. The loveliest garden I have ever seen on steep incline & in terraces. Roy v. naughty at dinner & after, think he must have over eaten himself.

Monday 6 August Lovely day. Lin & Mr Anderson rode at 7.30 until 9. Lin enjoyed it immensely. Mr Galbraith went to (blank) for horse show & took 3 prizes.

Mr & Mrs. Rae, Mrs. Galbraith & self to Eyemouth in break. Most lovely view from the rock of coast & St Edd’s (sic) lighthouse. Air bracing & I feel already worlds better. Miss (blank) fr. the Manse & her nephew to luncheon & tea. Mr (blank) fr. Manse to dinner. Roy playing tennis with Mr Anderson & Lin wedded to camera all afternoon.

Tuesday 7 August Lovely day. Lin rode with Mr Anderson before breakfast. We all went at 11.15 on coach for drive, past “Houndwood” a house where Mary Queen of Scots slept the night before the Battle of Dundee. Let out small yellowhammer in wood.

Wednesday 8 August Maud goes to Mrs. Winchester Clowes for week. Postponed until tomorrow. Had lovely drive afternoon to farm on coach. Mrs. Cameron Corbett took photo of coach, party on it Mr & Mrs. Galbraith, Mr Anderson, Mrs. Corbett, Arthur Rae, Lin & self. Miss Wilson, Mrs. Galbraith’s sister arrived, most charming little person about 22, full of fun & the merriest laugh I ever heard, quite contagious. Two letters fr. dear Maud. Letter fr. Mrs. Clowes asking her to go Thursday instead of today. Tiresome as the child will have two nights in town alone. Mr Aikin to dinner.

Friday 10 August Heard party return at 4 o’c this morg. fr. Ball. Miss W’s merry laugh! Mr Cameron Corbett arrived at 8 AM, delicate looking but seems to have vein of quiet humour. Mr McCall plays wonderfully well piano. Sat about all day quietly, talking, walking & reading day’s programme. Heavy showers. Letters fr. Eff & Mr Bret Harte. Reading “Tess of the d’Urbervilles” by Thomas Hardy.

Saturday 11 August Delightful picnic to Preston in four in hand, whole party except Mrs. Rae. Lovely drive & picnicked by the river White Adder, pronounced “Whittider”. Took photos. Mrs. Galbraith, wee Arthur & Mr McCall fished but without result. Mrs. Corbett & I walked & talked. View fr. our picnic spot charming with the bridge close to us. Lovely drive home thro’ Chirnside. “Lion rampant with hard boiled egg” Colley! Home by 7 o’c.

Sunday 12 August V. windy & indications of rain. Mr Galbraith, Mr & Mrs. Rae, Arthur, self, Mr McCall & 2 wees to church. V. good sermon on “Eternal Life” fr. Mr Aikin. Found the gooseberrys with Mr Anderson, excellent. Music evening. No billiards.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1894 for picnic. Charming place on coast & lake with golf links. Spent a delightful day there, saw St Abb’s lighthouse. V. fine but v. windy day.

Mr McCall plays piano well, also sleeps like Lin with facility on slightest chance. Mr & Mrs. Temple & Miss all of uncertain age & seem stolid.

Prefer the maiden being the liveliest of the trio.

Tuesday 14 August Lovely day about 12. Dull on & off but no rain to speak of. Letters fr.

Maud & Bee. V. odd, Bee met Mr & Mrs. Corbett at Mrs. Dauncey’s. Mr Aiken here for tennis. Went round to see horses with Mr Galbraith & Mr & Mrs. Temple. Mr Corbett returned.

Wednesday 15 August Very wet morg. Walked long walk with Mr Corbett, rained entire time.

After luncheon went round stud, most interesting, saw foals & mares out. Lady Alice with saddle, “Lola” Lady Ulrica. Saw Danebury out also.

Mrs. Temple v. nice like her v. much on better aquaintance.

Thursday 16 August We return home by 10.15. Mr & Mrs. Corbett & Mr McCall left with us.

Lovely day & comfortable journey home. Letter fr. Midge, Mrs. Langley died on the 2nd of August suddenly. V. sad for Hamilton, he left for B. Ayres on the 10th August. Mother with Midge & Dora at Bournemouth.

Found all well here pets included. Darling Maud went by Granville to Ramsgate, Emma saw her off. Found flowers in all the rooms fr. her & two letters.

Friday 17 August Lovely morg. Roy off to the Oval for cricket match. In all day. Lin hard at work. Letter fr. Maud. Very happy at Mrs Buckmaster’s.

Sunday 19 August Very wet dull & depressing. Three brace of grouse ar’d fr. Mr Watney most kind of him to remember us. Had one for dinner excellent. Dear Roy’s 16th birthday. In all day, no one called. Lin lunched at club, home in time for dinner.

Monday 20 August Lovely day, strong breeze. Roy left at 9.30 on cycle for Con’s, Fittleworth. Sent his cricket bag & portmanteau by train by Otley, 10 something train. Sp. came morg. stayed hours yet seemed pressed for time. Has found someone to advance H.L. on his estate some thousands of pounds at 7½ per cent. Sp. getting £40 clear on transaction. Seems a strange arrangement to my mind not a creditable class of business for a son of S.H. Letter fr. Dora Keighley saying Maud’s drawing will appear in Sept. number of Pall Mall Magazine. Letter fr. Maud, had seen B.W. but not spoken. Rec’d letter fr. him, v. worrying. Called on C. Hartree, out & Eddie B. Floss Kingscole arriving tomorrow with Ralf K, leaves next day for Ireland. No news fr. Roy. Lin had long ride evg.

Tuesday 21 August Lin off for entire day with Mr Donaldson on some new Torpedo trial trip.

Wir fr. Eff, Roy arrived at 6 o’c last evg well, enjoyed his ride. Out morg. shops. Wrote many letters. Invested in sieve for birds imitation of Mrs. Galbraith at a cost of 1/9, Emma thought 9d too much.

Saturday 25 August Go to Lady Margaret Watney’s for a fortnight. Arrived at 3.15, Mr Richards by later train. Sir Redvers & Lady Audrey Buller, Cap’t & Mrs. Ridley & Mr Ryle here, & a Mrs. Drummond, pretty widow. Met Mr Stokes, Mr Morley, Mr (blank) & Dr Harley at Perth, saw hooded hawk.

Thursday 30 August School treat. Fine until the tea when it rained hard & continued. Races, 3 legged, flat, sack, obstacle, creeping under forms & nets & over string, boxes filled with stones, v. amusing. Egg & spoon race & needle threading.

Warmer. Two ladies O. & Mr Marshall fishing for entire day at Lairg.

Result 2 small fish. Rest shooting. Lin at home all day for rest & looks better for it. Fed dogs at luncheon fr. giant cold boiled beef, & took Maud for walk. Lady M, Maud & self drove the Cheesenut at 3 & were not home until past 6 o’c. Enjoyed it. Pas amusée au dîner. Mad’lle O. agreable com. à son goût. Letters fr. C. Hartree, Miss Harcourt & Mary Nicol.

Saturday 1 September Colder, some sun, & heavy shower morg. All off shooting. Mrs. Drummond, Maud & self to Mound, lovely drive. Brown coal pony went much better than Cheesenut. Cold returning, met Lady M. & Mad’lle O. Maud had card fr. Mr Arden, & letter fr. W. B. Do not approve of these letters! Music evening.

Sunday 2 September Lovely morg. showery later. Golf handicap. Went round with les dames O, did not play as well as yesterday. Showery. Mr Marshall champion golfer, won by one stroke over Mr Watney.

Monday 3 September Lady M. & Mr Watney went to Inverness on account of Lady Camilla’s illness. Returned same evening, better. Lin bad cold. Maud & self read morg. Miss O. & Madame played golf with Mr Newton. Walked, Maud,

Tuesday 4 September Ladies went fishing. Maud unable to go. Stayed at home with Lady M. & Lin with v. bad cold.

Wednesday 5 September Letter fr. darling Roy. Drove to Golspie after lunchon, Miss Taylor, Mrs. Drummond, Lady M. & self. Saw whole of Dun(illeg) party. Met Mrs. Tom Eykyn, had tea at Hotel.

Thursday 6 September Whole party went to Dornoch (10) for day lunched on Links. Tea at Mr Ryle’s. Lovely day. Had games all way there & back. Sat in Mr Ryle’s rooms after seeing his pictures & rested after luncheon whilst rest played golf. Letter fr. Effie, Roy v. good. Drive home played all sorts of games, seemed no distance.

Friday 7 September Lin Maud & I leave Tressady for Banchory, Mrs. Nicol’s. Arrived 9 o’c at Roscombe in funny little omnibus leaving 4 pieces of luggage at station.

Mary, Mrs. Nicol & Mr Dyce at Banchory. Find house most comfortable & cheery. Large fire in our room & drawing room, flowers quite exquisite everywhere. Met Sir B. Baker & Mona at Inverness & lost sight à la bonheur of Mrs Drummond. Great relief here after the cold atmosphere of Tressady.

Saturday 8 September Good night. House most cheery & comfortable, all appointments good.

Lovely garden filled with wonderful variety of flowers & the most marvelous raspberries I ever saw, size of large gooseberry. Cap’t Uniake(?) arrived for luncheon, in 42nd Highlanders. V. good looking Irishman, witty & amusing. We all drove at 3 o’c to Mr Nicol of Belogies 56

Sunday 9 September Mary & Mr Dyce to Church. I rested in Gd. & read. We all went to a croquet party at Mrs. Brooke’s after luncheon & tea there. Amusing Miss Boteler & Captains Trench & Uniac, rival admirers. Mrs. Gordon & Bessie, Mr Maisie(?) Mainwaring etc. Games evg. telegrams.

Monday 10 September Garden party at Mrs. Nichol’s. Lovely day & v. warm. Morg. garden & raspberries. Capt Uniack left early. Lin & I leave at 4 o’c for London. Mr Hubbard Farquhar to luncheon. Mistake about our train at Aberdeen, went by 7.5 instead & had carriage reserved. Walked an hour in Aberdeen, v. crowded. Comfortable journey but for constant inspection of tickets letting cold night air in.

Tuesday 11 September Glentana Ball. Lin & self arrived home one hour late. Found 2 brace of grouse awaiting from V.W. Also found medallion & chain. Lovely sunny day bright & warmer. Letters fr. most of family. Called & saw Mother after tea & Mervyn. Mother looking v. weak.

Wednesday 12 September Came to Con’s Fittleworth by 10.50 train, pass. Midge, Dora & Roy met me, had Hawkins fly. Con just starting to meet Claud who returns fr.

Littlehampton, been staying with the Terreros. Roy looks well & seems very happy with them all, cousins get on splendidly together.

Monday 17 September Effie returned late about 9 fr. Folkestone after dinner. Discomfort immediately commenced, so noisy & rough. Con too looked seedy at once. Had lovely walk all together evg. Called & saw Mrs. Johnstone & the cottage. V. pretty but too wee.

Tuesday 18 September Sun at last. Went with Lin, Roy & Claud to rapids in boat. Walked after tea.

Wednesday 19 September Lin returned home by 12.40 train. Went for picnic tea up river after luncheon. Roy rowed & was v. rude & cross. Midge, Eff, Dora & self. I waited with Roy whilst he bathed & sculled home. Glorious day one of the v. few this year.

Mrs. Hammond about West Cliff Lodge.

Thursday 27 September Finer & actually sun!!! In bed morning. Sp. came with some wonderful story of becoming surety! for some doctor. No benefit to us beyond being called upon at any moment for £2000, & Sp. would get £500 a year.

Friday 28 September Another bright morg, 2, dull after & fine last of afternoon. Walked to Nellie Keith’s, out of town, return tomorrow. Called & saw Mrs. Coward, seems overpowered & worried with her huge family of 8. Nevertheless enjoyed my talk with her. Mr Coward better & returns next month. Lin v. busy. Read 2 stories to him fr. Harper both densely stupid. Sent div. of £2.8.9 Glas. S.W. Rly to London & County.

Saturday 29 September Sat or sprawled as model for Lin heading for a paper! Mad’lle & Mervyn called & brought me flowers & little pin cushion for Monfourde fête.

Alice knocked, unable to make us hear too deep in photos. Mad’lle came after lunch. We went for walk with her & to tea with Mother Midge & Mervyn. Lin & self dined at dear Mother’s evg, everything looked as pretty & dainty as ever & Mother charming in her cap & fichu. We walked home. Long letter from Maud having most delightful time, Miss R. much going it at Ayton.

Sunday 30 September Overslept ourselves woke at 20 to 10!!! Arranged flowers. Walked to gardens at 12 & sat some time near Round Pond. Met Nelly Zimmermann & Mrs. Ben Z. Walked part of way home with them. Lin working all morning, rode after luncheon.

Monday 1 October Went at 9.15 to Mother’s & on with Mervyn & Midge in bus to Fenchurch Street St. with all Mervyn’s luggage. Put all straight & in order in his 61

Tuesday 2 October Fine morg. Out shop’g met Mervyn on way here to wish Lin adieu. Mrs. Rae & Mervyn came to tea afternoon, & Mrs. Finlay. Lin rode morning.

Mr & Mrs. Rae met us at Comedy Theatre evg. to see “New Woman”. I liked it v. much both Cyril Maude & Miss Emery excellent, & Miss Rose Le Clerc. Saw 3rd maid but cannot engage her as Lin won’t take one with glasses. Dear Maud went today to Stirling with Mr & Mrs. Galbraith for the ball.

Wednesday 3 October Fine morg. Mervyn sails for Australia in “Hesperus” sailing vessel “Greens”. Con comes to us. Went to Mother’s at 1 o’c lunched with her & Mervyn. Con came in at 3 fr. Fittleworth & went off with Mervyn at ¼ to 4 to join “Hesperus” at Greenwich. Midge & Dora arrived fr. Fittleworth at 6. Had kept Mother fr. weeping over Mervyn’s departure by getting Dora’s room in order & so occupied her thoughts. Dined with them. Con not returned, came home in cab with his boxes. He arrived at 11 o’c here, had gruel & went to bed, saw dear Mervyn off.

Thursday 4 October X. Ten tons of coal in. Went to Mother’s. Midge gone. Dora here morg. sitting to Lin. Finding Midge out I called on Mrs. Eykyn & had long talk & tea there. She arrived night before with both her boys fr. Scotland just after the collision at York. Her train 2 hrs late in consequence. Then on to Marion P. oh! so proper & dull. Rained. Con came in in time for dinner. Turned out Maud’s room morning.

Friday 5 October Dull again, dark & warmer. Found coals all tumbling out of cellar, too full! Otley helped undo bedstead in Maud’s room & take it to pantry.

Sunday 7 October Walked with Con to Mother’s, both Mother & Midge seedy. Con remained to lunch with Mother & returned after with Dora to tea here. Quiet evg, we 3 dined alone.

Monday 8 October Asked to go to the Bourne’s fr. today till Saty. F. Walford came for day.

Went to Mrs. Hunt’s about housemaid, cost 1/6 bus fares & cabs. Turned out cupboard in nursery.

Tuesday 9 October Sir J. Tenniel, Mr & Mrs. Rae, Mr Stone & Ethel English to dinner. Usual dinner, Moody waited. Alice’s sister came also to help Emma. Saw 2 housemaids, both left without reason & long characters. Dark foggy day.

Lin rode, still has the little hacking cough which worried him at night. No letter fr. Maud.

Wednesday 10 October Lighter but dull. No letter fr. Maud. Long letter evg. fr. Maud v. happy & having v. good time. Wretched day. In all day v. wet.

Her house looks charming so cozy & drawing room v. pretty. Lin full of news this morg. at 1 o’c. Hammonds leaving Ramsgate entirely, Mr Pym & wife left £10,000 each by Mrs. Lyne Stephens & his 4 children £5,000 each, wish we had such luck!

Friday 12 October Alice’s sister came by week for 1st time. First sunshine. Went to Mother’s after lunch, found her looking v. weak. Edgar there. Saw Mad’lle, owe her 5/6. Stayed some time & walked home.

Saturday 13 October Fine. Waited in for Florence Walford till 11.30. Tidied drawers under dining room desk, found all in woeful muddle & dirt. Lin rode morg, worked later all day. I went to Miss Dalrymple’s about maid, hear Louise Blondel has left her husband. Hurried luncheon & F.W. & self went to Criterion & saw “Rebellious Susan” most excellent in every way & very amusing. Saw Sir T. & Lady Lucas. Om there 6d, program 6d, cab back 2/-. V. warm. Midge called so sorry to miss her. X. 2 French maids called.

X. Bought £100 stock of Wirrel Rly debs at £113¾. Must pay for com. etc £116 odd for same by 28th inst. 2/- Miss Dalrymple.

Sunday 14 October Gleamy morg. alternate bright sunshine & cloud. Invitation to spend week at Rider Haggards for middle November. Went to dear Mother’s found her v. ill, though up & dressed & sat at table for luncheon with Midge, Dora & self. Mr & Mrs. Samson & Tilda called & had tea. Walked home, found Lin still hard at work & read to him, so sorry to be out so long. He rode after lunch.

Wednesday 17 October Out morg. to see Mother still v. weak. Mad’lle to supper here. Alice out. I took venison to Mother.

Thursday 18 October Out morg. with Maud to Swiss Home by bus & om, took entire morning.

After lunch to Mother’s with Maud. Mother slightly better. Dora in bed with severe cold, Dr O. thinks something wrong with left lung.

Friday 19 October Lin v. busy, stood to him for drawing. Mr Burnand called, stayed some time, looked tired. Called with Maud after lunch & saw Mother, looks v. weak. Dora v. ill with pleurisy of right lung, Midge most anxious. Their new maid most successful.

Saturday 20 October X. Petit ami au lit. After luncheon I went with Maud to Garrick Theatre saw Willard in “Professor’s Love Story”. Willard v. good, rest ridiculous, below mediocre. Evelyn Coward met us there & we brought her back to tea. Fritz Jackson called. Maud went with Evelyn morg. to Mansions to enquire after Mother & Dora, both very bad. Our wedding day, had bottle of ’74 champagne at dinner.

Monday 22 October Marie Buhler came. X. In bed till 12. Midge came looks v. seedy poor girl with anxiety. X. Carriage for 1st time & mare. Drove to Mrs. Lindsay Hammond’s, saw Miss Roe, expecting the H’s that evg. fr. Milan. Round park, saw Watney baby, & to dear Mother’s. Sent carriage away, to fetch me at 6 o’c. Had tea with Midge in dear Mother’s room, seems terribly weak. Dora looks much better but still Dr O. says lung not right yet.

Maud to Mrs. Cowards to tea.

Tuesday 23 October In bed till 11. Showed Marie how to do my room & Maud’s. Lin rode morg. with Mr Finlay. 2nd number of “Lika Joko” out, not good. Maud out for flowers morning. Evelyn & Brenda to tea with Maud. I went out at 2.30, called & saw Miss Roe & round Park & dear Mother, resting, so did not see her. Saw Midge both better a little.

Wednesday 24 October Pouring wet morg. X. Sent letter containing cheque for £116.2.6 by Otley to post. Drove with Maud at 3 o’c to Stores, bought Bacon 3/2½, Music 5/-, Brooms 4/-, Box 1/ 2, Paper 2/11. Total 16.3½. Called & saw dear Mother looking a little better, Dora also. Judy there. Went after & ordered chair for Mother. Tabbie had been to see Mother.

Thursday 25 October X. Must pay Messrs Ransford & Co for purchase of £100 stock in Wirral Rly debentures 4%, £116.2.6. Buy at £114¾, rest for stamp & brokerage.

Saturday 27 October Roy home to breakfast, has cold but looks v. well. Shop’d morg. alone whilst Maud & Roy went for walk. Lunch at 12.30. Lin, Roy & self to Drury Lane, “The Derby Winner”. Lin joined us later. V. wet. Lin & Roy to tea at Club & walked home part of way, saw Mrs. Wheeler & a gentleman at theatre. In evg. went to “Gaiety Girl” at Daly’s, Lin & Maud in cab, Roy & self in brougham driving slowly.

Sunday 28 October Fine. Showed Marie again how to do bedrooms until 20 past 11, then went to Mother’s by bus, found all there better. Maud to early service & lunched with Mother after. Roy & Lin rode to Wimbledon. Maud returned by 4. Mr Stone & Col. Welby called.

Monday 29 October Evelyn here to tea & F. Walford who remained to dinner. Roy returned to Eton, cold seems rather bad. Lin made him promise to wear vests. I went alone at 3.30 to Mr Reed’s about Lin’s drawing, to Whiteleys bought two chimneys for small lamp 5½, to Mother’s just rec’d fr. bad heart attack again. Both Mother & Dora better. Midge looked v. delicate & worn out.

Worked after lunch, the 6th Sunday he has worked.

Monday 5 November Ap’t 11 o’c Mr Bartlett for Maud. F.W came & took her & lunched here after. I fetched Midge & we went to stores together. Mr Molloy called about song “Like as we Lie” & lunched here. As of old v. flattering & amiable when he wants something! When the drawing is done he will no doubt vanish again. Lin rode morg. & seems pleased with the mare.

Tuesday 6 November Edie Buckmaster comes. Mary Carter to luncheon. Out morg. No flowers this Tuesday! Stuck on too much in book! Evelyn C. Mrs. & Miss Gordon, Effie Harrison & Fanny Barker to tea, stayed long while. Fanny gave Maud a pair of gloves. Dr Orton came & saw Maud, says she is suffering fr. indigestion, giving her medicine. Lin rode morg.

Wednesday 7 November Ap’t with Miss Redcliffe for blue blouse. Out shops morg. Took Waddie to stores & to dress maker, left her at Derry & Toms. Edie & Maud out alone morg. & again afternoon. Winnie Lockyer to tea. I went with Lin at 69

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1894 4.30 to Mother’s & remained evg. She seemed v. weak, took her “Punches”. She sat in drawing room with Midge & self about an hour.

Midge & self sat with Mother after until she went to bed.

Thursday 8 November V. fine day. Florence W. called early & went with Maud to Mr Bartlett at 11 o’c, an hour there. F.W. lunched here. Edie B. went to Redfern’s alone morg. Maud & F.W. to Coopers Bond St. Edie with me to Miss Best about black bodice renovated, to Stores about Japanese paper, dearer than elsewhere! To Miss Redcliffe to be fitted, took ages! & for what? To Mrs. English’s saw entire female portion of family, excellent tea. Diamond buckle on Mrs. Holland I envied for Maud. Left parcel for Eff who is staying there & to darling Mother’s. Saw Effie there. Mother had another bad night & looked weak & tired, Midge also. Fetched Maud fr. there. Lin rode morg.

Friday 9 November Lin Maud & self dine at Wellington Club with Mr & Mrs. Campbell Praed 8 o’c.

Saturday 10 November Morg. busy. Shop’g & cleaned à l’ordinaire & feel tired in consequence.

Lunched at Mother’s, she looked much better & more herself. Maud fetched me in brougham. Rained hard 3.30. Called on Mrs. Holmes, had tea there. Had great fright going home, a horse bolted with carriage right across us in Kensington & dashed into Ponting’s window. Horse broke his neck.

Sunday 11 November Fine day & sunny. Maud & Edie to Church 9 o’c. I went to Mother’s to luncheon, Edgar there. Mother little better. Maud went with Mr Galbraith & Miss Ritchie in private hansom for drive & called on Mrs. Macqueen.

Lin rode. Mr Galbraith & Miss Ritchie to tea, & Mr Farquhar who remained on to dinner. Alice out. I came home fr. Mother’s in cab.

Monday 12 November Go to Mr Rider Haggard’s for few days, Ditchingham House, Bungay, Norfolk. Most uncomfortable journey, end of world place. Arrived just in time to scramble into dinner dress. Nice maid unpacked. House rather nice, good hall & billiard room & good bed room & fire. House party Mr & Mrs. Longman, Mr & Mrs. Minet (brother in law to Mr Longman). All 4 distinctly dull & uninteresting no doubt found me more so, & certainly weaker, they seem made of iron in frame, feelings & go, & I don’t like them. Rider Haggard charming as ever & a most kind & attentive host. V. sleepy & tired, slept soundly. Lin’s cough worried him & he still feels pain in eyeballs.

Tuesday 13 November Maud went with Florence to Mr Bartlett’s for last & 4th visit. Had several callers, Mr Richardson, Evelyn, Blanche, Mrs. Hartley etc. Lovely day at Ditchingham. Had little walk with Mrs. Longman find her still most uninteresting, small to me in every way. Wonder if my own sympathy is waning as I come across so many uncongenial people, more than of old!

Gentlemen out all day shooting. Mrs. Haggard, Mrs. Longman, Mrs. Minet & self walked & had tea at Mrs. Carr’s at Ditchingham Hall. Nice old lady & a pleasant little Mrs. Whittaker there fr. Sussex, many other ladies. Billiards. Mrs. Haggard’s cousin to dinner. Played & sang guitar well & had some fun in her, the rest all stolid except Rider Haggard.

Wednesday 14 November Pouring all day hopelessly. In all day working reading & writing. All ladies out nevertheless & men too. Lin still looking seedy & v. tired, complains of headache, eyeballs aching. Pleasant at dinner, sat next to Mr Haggard & Mr Longman.

Thursday 15 November Lin & self returned by 4 train fr. Ditchingham. Pouring wet day morg, finer afternoon. All out in drenching rain driving partridges. Lin too 71

Friday 16 November Fine day. In bed till 12.30. Maud & Edie to Mansions, Maud remained to luncheon. Florence W. called. Edie walked to mansions, Florence with me to call on Mrs. T. Simpson & Mrs. Medley & to tea with Midge. Left F.W. at Kensington P. Hotel, & carriage returned for 2 girls & self fr.

Mother’s. Edgar there, Mother better. X. Dr O. called & saw Maud, asked him about Lin.

Saturday 17 November Lin goes by early train to Mitcham with Mr Wallace for day’s shooting.

Lin went by early train only came to bed at 3 o’c & coughed incessantly for an hour. Gave him beef tea & lozenges. Lovely morg. Roy returned from Eton on account of floods. Maud to stores in carriage with Evelyn Coward. In all day.

Sunday 18 November Maud & Edie to Grannie’s, & Roy. Lin away with Mr Wallace. Mr Molesworth & Mr North called. Lin arrived in time for dinner.

Monday 19 November Lin dines with Mons. de Ayala at Savoy. Edie left at 10. Roy saw her to Charing X. In bed till 12. Nearly wild with Marie cannot sweep a floor or clean brass or do anything in order. Called at 3 on Sir R. Webster & Mrs. P. Macquoid, Mrs. Agnew & Miss Warre, in, & little dog! Left Maud at Mrs. Trapmann’s & went to Mother’s, better. Had tea there. Muddly dinner here. Emperor of Russia’s funeral. All flags half mast, night bells tolling.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1894 Shop’d morg. Bought flowers 1/3 Barkers & paid for them. Mr Farquhar, Mr Fowler, Evelyn, Mrs. Spofforth, Miss Wilson, Mrs. Tate, Mrs. Walter Crane called & had tea. Light v. ugly in morg. room. Maud in bed till luncheon with v. bad cold.

Wednesday 21 November Mrs. Fletcher Snr died. Mrs. Rawinson 5 - 7. Out morg. shop’g. To Mother’s, better. Went up Row with Midge, Dora & Sp. Met Ruth riding, Mrs. Tate, Mrs. Heilbut, Mr Sterne & Mr S. Trowers. Cab’d home 1/-. At 3 in brougham to Mother’s fetched Midge & went to Wittons. Kept us ages, only able to make one call Mrs. Steincopff, had tea there. Lady (blank) Kennedy there charming old lady. Roy to dinner with Mr Stone & Col. Welby at Albany & to Circus after. Lin & he went up together. Maud in bed till tea time, Miss Trapman to tea with her.

Thursday 22 November Lin & self dine at Col. Welby’s 8 o’c. Maud laid up with congestion of right lung. Dr Orton came, to be kept in bed & poulticed. Fairly pleasant dinner at Col. Welby’s. Mr Hodgson, editor of “The Realm” small interesting looking man, Mrs. Capel & Mrs. Clifford. Hands told, v. uncomfortable. Walked out afternoon bought grapes 1/3 etc. Roy to theatre with Mr Stone, Keith, Falconer & Pollack. Home at 1.30.

Friday 23 November Dr O. to see Maud, about the same, coughed all night. Went to Mother’s taking Gladys Coward to Dora’s tea party. Hilda H. & Dorothy Shakespeare there. Dear Mother a little low. Dear Mother insisted on giving me a pheasant.

Saturday 24 November Dr O. came at 1.15 to see Maud, still same but had a better night. Saw Lin, liver. Out morg. shop’g, did flowers & Maud’s room, v. tiring. At 2 o’c in brougham to Haymarket with Lin & Roy. Mr Stone met us there.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1894 scene splendid, acting & dresses good. Mrs. Patrick Campbell’s part not worthy of her. Roy & I to tea at Mr Stone’s, Lin walked home. Miss Wilson dined here, bright little thing, & eat nothing. Midge called & brought flowers for Maud.

Sunday 25 November Maud about the same. After putting her room straight & seeing Lin & Roy off for their ride went for a walk alone. Met Mrs. Cole & Maud & afterwards Blanche who walked home with me. Effie Harrison to lunch, tea & dinner for Maud. Four boys called on cycles for Roy but he was out. Cold bright day. Midge & Dora came to see Maud. Mr Marshall & Mr Reed called, latter going to Switzerland on ac’t of his wife’s health on Wednesday. Lin dines with Kinsman’s club at Savoy.

Monday 26 November Out morg. Bought silk 1/3 for lamp, Maud’s medicine 2/-, tea cake 2d. Dr Orton came. Maud mending slowly. Lin out after breakfast till 4.30. Roy to billiards at Pollocks. Men put down carpet in M’s room & oil cloth.

Evelyn C. called & Miss Rawlinson. Maud long letter & Album fr. Mr Blair. I called alone about 3.30 to enquire Mrs. Prinsep (woman murdered last night opposite their house) Mrs. C. Hunter, Fildes, Marcus Stone & Mrs. Alexander, & had tea at Mother’s, all better there. Mr Rooth sent us 2 tickets for theatricals for Thursday, had to return them. Marie rather hopeless, so slow in cleaning.

Tuesday 27 November Asked Mary Carter for day. Out morg for flowers 6d, stores, ordered 3 nightdresses for Maud as Xmas present, & linen awfully expensive. Miss Enthoven, Mrs. Harrison, Fanny Fildes, Miss Ritchie, Mary Carter all called.

Wednesday 28 November Lin working at “Like as we Lie” for Welman & Molloy. Went alone to Bank about transferring Ex. B.A. Gt. S. Rly shares into ordinary stock.

Left letter at Mrs. Wallace. Mrs. Beale, Miss Rawlinson & Evelyn C. to see Maud morg. Effie Harrison here all afternoon. Roy & self to Court Theatre to see “Gay Widow” X. Dr Orton came, overhauled Lin! Nothing new to impart. So sleepy could scarcely keep awake.

Thursday 29 November Mr Rooth asked Maud & self to go to Theatre at Albert Hall to see him act, had to return tickets unable to go. Evelyn in morg. to sit with Maud.

M. better. Lin & Roy rode, met Mr Jones who gave Roy a box for St James’ theatre for tonight. Asked Keith Falconer & Pollock to go with him. I drove at 4 to Mother’s, not so well. Just missed Midge & Tabbie, gone off shop’g. Called on Mrs. Galbraith, only saw Mrs. G. sen’r. Mrs Galbraith sent us a brace of pheasants & some lovely flowers just arrived fr. Scotland.

Friday 30 November Maudie not quite so well. Dr O. came. M. seems cross & fretful afraid another slight chill. Out morg. shops. Grapes 2/3. Went in brougham to Mother’s, had tea with Midge. Mother not so well. Called at Stores ordered medicine & Livico(?) Water, & Lin’s present & Alice’s dress 13/6.

To Col. Welby’s, left cards at Mrs. Lynn Linton, C. Matthews & Mrs. O. Crawfurd. Mrs. Galbraith came to see Maud morg.

Saturday 1 December Mrs. Gordon at home 4 - 7. Foggy morg. In all morg. X. M. petit ami.

Seems fretful & no better. Tabbie called at 2.30 & saw Maud. I drove her back to Alexandra H. she leaving with maid at 4.7 for Brookwood. Called after on Mr Hartree had tea there, & bought 1/- sweets, post cards 6d. Lin in all day working at Golf drawing (song). Winnie Lockyer here to lunch & tea.

Monday 3 December Went to Mother’s 4.30. Midge just gone out. Mother looked better. Dr Orton came says Maud must not get up till Wed. or Thursday. Dined v. late. Lin sent off Church drawing.

Tuesday 4 December Dinner of 8. Mr & Mrs. Galbraith, Mr Rooth, Mr Guthrie, Mr Lockyer & Miss Rose Innes. Out morg. shops. Flowers & fruits 7/6, shades 1/6.

Otley to stores. Lin paid for fish, pigeons, candles etc. Lin rode morg.

Miss Sandeman, Mrs Coward & E, Miss Warre, Miss Webster, Mr Clementson called. Awfully hurried, luncheon so late. Moody here to wait. V. pleasant dinner & all stayed till 12.30, all left together. Maudie better but complaining of feeling tired. Mrs. G, Miss R.I. & self sat ¾ of hour with Maud after dinner.

Wednesday 5 December Mrs. Keith at home 9 - 12. Asked F. Walford for day. Mrs. Linley’s funeral, Lin went to it. Hope he won’t take cold nasty raw day. Evelyn & Florence here. Dr Orton came, said Maud might get up for short time, she did not feel well enough. Mr Bret Harte & Mr McFall called. Called unable to see Mother, sleeping. Midge came to Maud. Called & saw Sir B. Baker, let their house & going abroad.

Thursday 6 December Went to Sandown with Mr & Mrs. Galbraith 10.45 & Miss Ritchie. Fairly fine, enjoyed Sandown immensely excellent lunceon, & coffee. Best race won by aged horse “Cloister” only one other completed with him. Mrs. Galbraith drove both Miss Ritchie & self home. Maudie up for short time.

F.W. here, v. vexed with her for letting M’s room get too hot, so thoughtless.

Met Edgar on way down, he & Sophy staying at 4 Prince’s St, Hanover Sqre. Maudie up & looks a little better. Alone all afternoon pouring wet so no one came.

Saturday 8 December Carriage at 10.30. Called & took Midge to Stores. Found dear Mother v. v. weak & suffering greatly fr. her heart. Lovely bright day, order brooms & pd. 7/8 for them. Fish, chicken, table for Roy. Lin rode after luncheon. V. dull day after 2 o’c. I stayed with Maud, she came in to drawing room & had luncheon there. Mad’lle & Evelyn to tea.

Sunday 9 December Foggy morg. Lin rode. Cleared later. Dora to luncheon & tea. Fritz Jackson, Edgar & Sophy, Jessie, Miss Rose Innes, Mr Hubart Farquhar & Mr & Mrs. Galbraith called. Alice out. Marie out morning. Maud down to luncheon for first time. Evelyn C. here all morning.

Monday 10 December Mrs. de la Rue’s dinner 8 o’c. Went to Mother’s took violets but only saw Dora, all resting. Mr Godefray took me in & Mr Pollock sat on my right.

Dullish evg & magnificent dinner & table. Lady Monckton, Pollocks, Mertons, Mr Sterne v. vain man etc, no one of particular interest. Maudie up & down to luncheon. Alice out afternoon & evening.

Tuesday 11 December Drove to Mother’s morg. saw her looking v. fragile. Sat half an hour with her. Met Dora & Florence in Park & home.

Wednesday 12 December Fime morg. Dr Orton came & said Maud might go out. She went with Evelyn for a walk. First night of Mr Burnand’s piece with Sir A. Sullivan.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1894 Thursday 13 December Lin & self dine at Mrs. Wallace’s 7.45. In all day. V. dull. Maud out for walk with Florence W. who remained to lunch & tea. Evelyn came to tea brought me 3 lovely roses. Lin v. busy & just before dressing policeman came bringing a summons for coroner’s inquest to be held tomorrow (bothered him v. much.) Arrived late at the W’s. Large party, house conventionally pretty, table charming, all roses. Sat next to a Mr Fisher amusing & interesting, with a face like an intelligent weasel, otherwise dull evg. Talked to a Mr Wyllie who gave impresion of having (illeg) common little man who showed part of leg & a woollen sock & ugly foot.

Midge came morg. Mother not so well after seeing 5 members of family yesterday.

Friday 14 December V. foggy. Read “Donovan” by Edna Lyle. V. good & v. touching. Lin v. busy. Evelyn here afternoon. Went at 3 to dear Mother found her v. ill & upset. Edgar came, & I drove him back to his rooms. Dora with fresh cold.

Saturday 15 December Drove at 3.30 to Mrs. Keith’s & Lill Laver, & dear Mother, seemed better.

Edgar came. Lin dined at Bath Club dinner, bad. Lin rode to Bouverie St. Mad’lle came & had tea with Maud.

Sunday 16 December Dull morg. Lin rode with Mr Parsons. Mare went dead lame after sharp canter but righted herself later. Darling Mother v. v. bad, Dr O. alarmed.

After lunch Mr Bret Harte, Mr Adams, Weigall, Rooth, Lockyer & sister & Mr Hook called & stayed some time. Miss Hepworth Dixon dined here & spoke to Lin about frontispiece of “The English Woman” which she is to edit.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1894 Dull as usual. Up at 11.30. Bestly cold in head otherwise feel better but it makes me peevish(?) & horrid. Lin rode early. Maud slept badly & looks weak & limp. Drove at 2.30 to Libertys for silk, to Verity’s about lamp & to stores for fish & suet. Midge here to tea. Mother a little better, started a night nurse Saty night. Col Welby & Mrs. McQuoid called.

Tuesdsay 18 December Pouring wet morg. Unable to go out until 11.30. Called for Midge & went to stores ordered Xmas groceries 16/4, 2 packets candles 4/4. Mrs. McQuoid, Mrs. & Mary Nembhard called, so sorry & grieved to hear of dear Mrs. Winchester Clowes’ illness, all hope given up. Tipoo arrived v. handsome fox terrier, tan & black head, white body v. fine legs & pointed head.

Wednesday 19 December Maud & I dine with Fritz Jackson & go to dance with him. Alas unable to go. German Reed’s first night two stalls. Mrs. Silver’s at home 4.30 to 6.30. Out awith Lin, walked 11.15 with hime & “Tipoo” to end of Row. Met Evelyn & Maud. Cold wind. Lin went on & dined at some lawyers’ dinner, met Mr Sterne. I returned in brougham with girls. Flowers fr. Mrs. Galbraith. Sent some by Marie & Tipoo after tea to Mother, better. Mary Carter to tea.

Thursday 20 December Out with Maud at 9.30 to stores. Bought tree presents 1/11, sewing silk 1/- & ordered turkey. Books 4/9. In all afternoon. Maud sleeps in her new room, looks v. nice. Mother little better. Mad’lle called morg.

Friday 21 December Lin worked hard all day.

Saturday 22 December Pay Marie’s wages 1½ months, paid her ½ month’s wages already. V. busy shop’g. Went to matinée of “His Excellency” v. good at Savoy, Lin 79

Sunday 23 December Quiet day no one called but Evelyn to tea. Went to Mother’s after 9 o’c service with Maud. X. Little F. Maud. Lin & Roy rode.

Monday 24 Decemebr Gave Dora party here. Out morg. shops. £1 spent but it went all in small nothings. Dora, 2 Cowards, Douglas & Hilda, Roy & Maud had tree in Morg. room which looked v. pretty lighted. Midge came round for a few moments.

Tuesday 25 December Maud to 9 o’c service with Cowards, met me at 11.30 at Mother’s. Had bad night but looked a little better. M. & self walked home. Evelyn came in to tea & stayed till nearly dinner time. Lighted tree again & played games after dinner.

Wednesday 26 December In all day. Cleared out nursery which took entire day. Lin worked all day.

Roy to his club. Lin & Roy to first night Pamtomime. Fritz called & stayed to tea, been v. seedy with chill.

Thursday 27 Decemebr Fine morg. Maud & self took “Tipoo” for walk as far as Row. Called at Derry for Maud’s dress to be fitted, green with fur. She is v. disappointed with it. Tea fight at Mrs. Jones & Mrs. Ritchie’s. Met Miss White & Mr Durham. Mrs. Jones looking charmingly picturesque in her lovely old house. Left Maud first at Mrs. Ritchie’s & called alone on Mrs. Leech, Mrs. Ansdell, Mrs. Wallace & Miss Rose Innes, & sat with Mother. Midge & Dora out. Mother better decidedly. Nurse (illeg) there.

Called on Eddie B, Mrs. Corbett, C. Hartree where we had tea & saw Mr Grant & then to Mother’s, a little better. Dined at 9 o’c.

Saturday 29 December Mrs. Walter Crane at home 10 o’c. Out morg. Maud, Lin, Roy & self to Court Theatre “Dr Bill” evg, played out a little. V. cold night.

Sunday 30 December Went to church, met Maud & Evelyn & went for long walk in Row with them. Bitterly cold wind. Lin & Roy walked in Row with “Tip”at 12 o’c.

Memorable day by “Tip’s” first bark! Went after some ducks. Mr Bret Harte & Miss Rose Innes called.

Monday 31 December V. cold. Went with Maud at 3.30 to Mrs. Tate, Rainbow, Nottage, Mrs. Clarke where we had tea, & Mrs. Harrison & Mother, stayed there some time. Morg. did linen, cleaned fire irons! In nursery marked 8 shirts & 12 collars with Roy.
