Revolution Discontinued

We want to let our clients know Revolution for dogs is being discontinued. We recommend changing to Simparica Trio. Simparica Trio aligns with the best practice guidelines in Australia for protecting against common parasites using the most effective and safe ingredients.

Rewards points will be carried over.

Revolution for Puppies and Kittens is still available.

We have had a heartworm positive case diagnosed at the clinic.

The dog has travelled down from Queensland and unfortunately was not on any heartworm prevention. Mosquitoes are the carriers of heartworm and given the influx due to the wet weather the parasite can quickly spread througout the region to our pets.

What you should do: Ensure your pet is on heartworm prevention. We recommend a Simparica Trio given as monthly chew or and annual injection of Proheart SR12.

Snakes are now active and there have been many sightings around the area. When snakes come out of hibernation there venom toxicity is at its highest. Dr. Kelly has put together this article to help you and your pet stay safe this summer.

How to reduce the risk of your pet being bitten by a snake.

Make your backyard less inviting to snakes - keep your grass cut short and clear any rubbish or garden piles (ie. rock, wood) that could offer a quiet, safe place for snakes to hide.

Keep pets inside on hot days, as this is when snakes are most active.

Walk dogs on a lead near bushland or water in hotter months. Always avoid tall grass and don't allow your pets to explore holes or dig under rocks. Always keep emergency veterinary details on hand.

What to do if you see a snake with your pet.

If you see a snake near your pet, try to safely remove your dog or cat from the situation. Do not approach the snake and be careful not to stand in their escape path. Most snakes will actively avoid you given the chance and will generally only strike if they feel threatened.

Don't try to capture or kill the snake, all Australian snakes are protected and you may put yourself in danger. If the snake is in your garden, contact your local snake catcher who can remove the snake and relocate it to a safe environment.

If you suspect your pet has been bitten. Keep them as still as possible and take them to the nearest vet immediately. Don't wait for the signs, as this can be too late.

If you can remember what the snake looked like this can be helpful to your vet.

How to tell if your pet has been bitten.

Pets are usually bitten around the head, neck or front legs, although bite marks are often difficult to find. Some pets will appear fine after a snake bite, then go down hill rapidly. Others may collapse, then get up again and appear fine. However, the longer you wait before getting your pet to the vet, the lower its chance of survival.

Sometimes owners don't spot their pet with a snake, however if your pet is showing any of the following signs take them to the vet immediately.

Sudden weakness, inability to stand

Collapse

Dialated pupils

Rapid, shallow breathing

Vomiting/Diarhoea

Shaking

Loss of bladder or bowel control

Blood in urine or vomit

Heartworm is a serious disease that can cause heart failure, lung disease, organ damage and death. Heartworm disease can be deadly, but we can easily and safely prevent heartworm in our pets.

There are many heartworm preventatives available. Prevention should begin at 6 -8 weeks of age. If your dog has not had heartworm medication for more than six months, a blood test is necessary before you commence preventative treatment.

The most convenient protection for dogs is a yearly injection that can be given at the same time as your dog's annual health check and vaccination. This is Proheart SR12.

There are also tablets and spot-on applications for dogs and cats that are given monthly. Some of the products we recommend are Revolution and Simparica Trio.

Mosquitoes are hard to keep out of both your yard and house, so even and indoor pet is at risk .

If you require any further information please contact the clinic to ensure your pet is protected from heartworm. Continued page 36.
