The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them.

Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001.

Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting.

Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire.

The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road.

Town Entrance Signs. IPA worked for many years to procure the 2 Entrance Signs (Hamilton Highway East and West) welcoming travellers to our town.

The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee.

Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history.

We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to copy material. We are most grateful to the many people who have kept the Historical Society in mind as they sorted through their own collections.

We undertake many interesting projects and have enjoyable meetings, which you are welcome to attend.

Seasons Greetings to you all. Thank you to all those who have contributed to the Leigh News

throughout this last year. Sometimes I start putting together the next edition together and I wonder, how many pages will this issue require? Will I have to remove some pages or add more in?

When I began as Editor in August 2015 it was a 32 page monthly newsletter. And now it is running at 52 pages! There are some advertisers that have been with the Leigh News for all of that time and even longer. But each month, the stories keep coming in, so thank you to all the readers and those who contribute. It has been a bit of a challenge this last 6 months with printing due to the Gordon TAFE Printing Dept. being flooded out. Sadly, they have decided not to continue with their printing department and those employees have lost their jobs.

Thanks Michael and his staff. I wish you all the best.

May this Christmas time for you all be a blessed time with family and friends. Please also stop for a moment and reflect on the reason we celebrate Christmas, remembering the birth of Jesus and why God sent him to earth as a baby and a Saviour for all mankind. The world has changed a lot over the last year with Covid and all we have had to change in our lives to cope with it.

A Christmas Message-Rev. Surendra Wesley-Leigh Presbyterian Church

There are a lot of traditions, theories and even conspiracy surrounding Christmas in regards to its exact date and its origin (probably being derived from pagan traditions).

Over the years the Christmas celebration has departed from its central meaning and has become a part of big money-making event. It has become so commercialized that we have been fooled by its glitz and glitter.

Then, there is Santa Clause, reindeers, elves and the North Pole. The devil has replaced the glory of the living God with the figment of our imagination. Children and most non-believers probably still believe that this is what Christmas is all about.

We get caught up in all these secondary things, that we perhaps, miss the main point and message of Christmas.

Christmas is a pure depiction of the greatest love of the living Jehovah God to the sinful mankind.

The entire human race was headed forensically to hell due to their sinful disobe- dient to God, but God in His great and unconditional love made a way for you and I to escape the eternal hell by accepting and believing in the Lord Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. John 3:16 says - 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

God gave His only Son Jesus Christ to die in your place, so that you and I can have eternal life. Christmas is about the greatest love sacrifice from God to us mankind.

God gave you the greatest gift, His own Son. Have you received this amazing gift of God yet? Certainly, giving is far greater than receiving, but, in this case, receiving is all you can do. The Bible gives you step by step, very clear and precise instructions, as how to receive this magnificent and unconditional love gift from God.

May you experience the true joy of Christmas this Christmas by accepting and receiving this love gift from God.

May you all have a blessed and life-changing Christmas.

December 2021 Leigh News Inverleigh Hist Soc Calendar

What excitement in December 2019 when the long, silver Great Southern Rail train pulled into the Inverleigh siding, and neighbour Dolores Quinlivian took this photograph. It is now shown on the December 2021 calendar produced by the Inverleigh Historical Society.

The train had travelled from Brisbane on a 4 day, 3 nights, journey to Adelaide with a day stop at Inverleigh, when passengers went to Geelong or to the Twelve Apostles. The train visited for eight weeks in December and January 2020 but did not return for another season because of Covid-19 lockdown restricused for freight and the twice weekly Overland from tions.

Historical Society Calendar.

A delightful image of two Eastern Grey kangaroos with joeys, captured by Andrea Bolton. It is the cover and January image of the yearly calendar produced for the Inverleigh Historical Society.

The kangaroos are an integral part of the Inverleigh Flora & Fauna Reserve (historically referred to as the Common) and are most regularly seen on the golf course, roadsides in the Common, and within the township environs when seeking food..

As more and more houses are being built adjacent to The Common, concerns are being raised about cars, dogs and closed off access routes for the kangaroos and wallabies to reach safety and water in times of stress.

The 2022 Calendar is now available for $15 and makes a perfect Christmas gift for current and ex residents.

Tracking Club of Victoria Inc is looking for a new home at Inverleigh. Leigh News 5

For over 20 years the Tracking Club of Victoria has been running their trials in and around the farms and bushland of Inverleigh. Due to the changes to the use of the Inverleigh Flora & Fauna Reserve by Parks Victoria the Club has been advised they will not be able to apply for permit for the 2022 season, so are now on the lookout for a new place/s to hold their trials.

Over the years the Club have been able to hire the facilities at Victoria Park in Inverleigh as their base for each weekend and would love to continue to do so in the future.

The Tracking Club of Victoria has held around 7 weekends of trials in Inverleigh. Their trials involve setting out a range of courses that involve various challenges, including sharp turns; distances from 400 metres to over 1 km and various diversion cross over points. Once the courses are set out by the team of helpers flags are left and a map is drawn so that the following day a lone person can follow the course and hide at the end. Once the person has been ‘lost’ for the required time – which can be up to several hours, the dog is then prepared in a harness alerted to an item left by the lost person and then asked to track the person. While tracking there is no

sign of where the person has gone, nothing left on the track, just the dog’s great ability to sniff them out. Each dog works as a team with their handler and is kept on a lead at all times, so that the handler can sense any change in behavior that might indicate where the lost person has gone. To see these dogs work is an eye opener, the connection the handler has with their dog is a true demonstration for the bond they have together.

Each trial is held over 3 or 4 days, with competitors from all over Victoria, plus a few interstaters, venturing to Inverleigh. With the early start time most competitors stay before they compete so they don’t have to wake too early. Last year saw one of the biggest trials with over 120 dogs being tested at the trial.

The Inverleigh Flora and Fauna Reserve has been the perfect location for the trials to take place as it offers both a realistic setting and beautiful scenery. The club has in recent years had the privilege to have access to a farm property in Inverleigh in addition to the Inverleigh Flora & Fauna Reserve. Farms offer a different setting for the dogs to work in, with their own challenges of sheep, dams and open paddocks where scent may not settle as quickly.

To enable the Club to continue to run its trials in Inverleigh, and support the local area, the Club is hoping that other farmers may be interested in allowing us to use their paddocks in addition to the ones the Club already uses in the area.

14 Leigh News Golden Pens – Write Side Up G'Day from the penners. Well hasn’t the time got away! First up we missed putting an article in Octobers magazine, then November was jammed packed with community news and we missed being printed but we are back on track now.

It’s a bit scary to think that Christmas is only about a month away, hope you are all managing to get your plans finalised and that the day is happy and as stress free as possible.

It also seems that summer has gone on holidays this year and who knows when she will return. It has been a bit cold and miserable for this late in the year but the rain is always welcome.

Our group is back at the library and we are working and chatting hard, it is always a pleasure to get together every 2 weeks and many a laugh echoes throughout the library on Thursday afternoons.

FREE SKIN CANCER CHECK AND AWARENESS UNIT TO VISIT INVERLEIGH FRIDAY & SATURDAY 21st & 22nd JANUARY 2022 – 9am to 3.30pm (ALL ATTENDEES MUST SHOW PROOF OF DOUBLE VACCINATION) This unit will provide a free skin screening service to local people. It is operated by fully trained, certificated, volunteer dermoscopists. The unit will also be a valuable resource for local people to access not only the skin check, but valuable and timely information about skin care and self-checking techniques.

We know early detection of skin lesions potentially saves lives, so this visit will be a timely support and reminder to local people of the need to take care of their skin.

Following the skin check, visitors will be issued with a referral to their GP if there are any suspect spots or lesions.

The Unit is not a medical clinic, so diagnosis or treatment requirements are not discussed – it simply provides the skin check and alerts the visitor to skin lesions that require further checking and attention: a great first step in ensuring urgent needs are addressed. The airconditioned van has three fully equipped screening rooms and an entry foyer, as well as a disabled lift and entry at the rear.

Members of the Lions Club of Inverleigh-Leigh Valley will be responsible for scheduling appointments with the unit.

POLICE REPORT FOR DECEMBER 2021 Hello all,

Well in recent times COVID measures have eased and we have seen an influx of people passing through our region. We had a traffic operation Compass on the weekends of the 29/10 and the 5/11/2021 just after the travel restrictions eased. I issued 91 infringements over 6 shifts over those two weekends as I detected numerous motorists mainly speeding on the highways and through the towns. I caught several motorists at excessive speed who had their licences suspended and have in recent weeks caught another motorist doing 146 km/h in a 100 km/h zone who had his licence suspended for 6 months. Coming up to the Christmas period and with lots of motorists passing through the area please take extra care on the roads so everyone can be back safe for 2022.

I have had reports of a person loitering in the early hours of the morning up off River Gum Drive and Carl Court Inverleigh in recent weeks, if anyone has footage of a male loitering in the area please contact me at the Police station.

I have had complaints in relation to off road unregistered motorcycles some being ridden by children in the Inverleigh Common.

I have mentioned similar issues with riders in prior articles. Riders need to hold a motorcycle licence and their motorcycles need to be registered to be ridden in any public places.

Don’t let your children ride motorcycles in public places, the only place for this is motorcycle clubs or private property.

I am still receiving complaints in relation to speeding trucks in Common Road heading to and from the new subdivision. I have raised the issue with the site supervisors and have also conducted several static radar patrols. I have issued one infringement to a truck driver who I detected but most I have checked have been doing the speed limit. I am aware that I do stand out in the marked car though and drivers can warn others through their CB’s and phones. I will continue to keep an eye on the area.

Please take care over the Christmas/ new Year holiday period enjoy your holidays if you are lucky enough to have some time off and hopefully the new year will be better than the last couple with a lesser COVID impact on everyone’s lives.

We have always enjoyed the lovely atmosphere and opportunity for our community to socialise and enjoy a meal together, but uncertainty with covid restrictions has led to this decision.

We look forward to hosting an Australia Day event in 2023.

LEIGH DISTRICT RIDING CLUB

Leigh District Riding Club’s home grounds are at our beautiful local Victoria Park. This is an invitation for new members, and a special encouragement for those who use and enjoy the horse facilities at Victoria Park, to join and support the club that maintains them.

We are a small, inclusive club for adult and junior riders wanting to enjoy their horses, at whatever level they might be. Joining LDRC costs $195 of which $145 is the HRCAV insurance fee which covers you 365 days of the year, provided you are engaging in a HRCAV type activity, wearing riding boots and helmet. (think riding at home, trail riding, having a lesson, but not rodeo). Juniors and non-riding members cost less.

LDRC has fantastic jumps and obstacles available for instructors to use. With COVID rules easing, it should be easier to organise rallies. During 2021 we enjoyed several rallies with instructor Heather Bowers involving dressage, poles and jumping, depending on rider choice. We attended an indoor arena during the Winter months, and held an obstacles day with Marg Anderson on Mothers Day.

Our Christmas rally being held on 12.12.21 is an Equitation with Obstacles rally, fantastic for getting your horse to listen, and do something different. Again catering for all horse and rider abilities. If you want to come and try this before considering membership, we can organise Day insurance. Afterwards, we will share some lunch.

20 Leigh News Learning to Think Again

As a Christian there is a starting point that is assumed. That starting point for me is in an understanding of God as he is revealed to us in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. But that does not mean my understanding of God is set in concrete; it is continuously tested by my experience of life and how I come to understand God at work in the world throughout history, through different cultures, and present personal and community events.

Theology: God (Theos) and logos (word) literally means talking about God. I can only talk about God as I understand God to be at this point in time. Theology, therefore, is not an academic process, belonging in the realms of philosophy and universities, it is a relational process. Every Christian is meant to be a theologian and this is the work we call discipleship, being a learner.

The experience of Covid-19, and all that has demanded of us, has caused me to do some rethinking about how I understand God and, consequently, my choices. As we, in the church, have been forced to do church (worship) on-line, live or recorded, has caused me to think about what it means to gather as church, even though we may be isolated in our houses. I believe in the right to life and found myself thinking about the origins of the Covid-19 vaccines coming from an aborted foetus. The death of Jesus on the cross reminded me that an innocent one is able to provide salvation for all humanity. A colleague found themselves realising that partaking in Holy Communion every week was not as

important as it once was. Rethinking the meal of food and wine at the table shared prayerfully with members of the household was Communion. The experience of times of trial in our lives invites us to go deeper in our thinking.

Faced with the difficult and awkward things of life we are challenged about why we do what we do and think what we think. However, our comfortable lives cause us to forget to keep thinking when we encounter times of distress. Covid-19 has pushed us, perhaps reminded us, to begin to do the work of thinking again. The changes our thinking will change the way we relate with those around us; hopefully for the better. I can imagine changes in behaviour may put pressure on existing relationships and marriages.

We can push back, rebel, protest, against the forced shifts to our comfortable thinking, or we can learn to do the work of thinking again, going deeper and discover new and, hopefully, better ways of living with one another.

On the 7th November the Winchelsea group conducted an exercise in the Inverleigh area. The group consists of seven brigades that work together and support each other with larger fires, strike teams and the like. This particular day we were doing some training and it is a good chance to catch up with personnel from other brigades that we could possibly be working with over the course of the summer.

One really good thing to come out of the day was to hear others comment on the risks that they saw in our brigade area. Some were large and complex, such as the condition of the Common and others were very simple and hopefully easy to address.

One such observation was the lack of clear numbering on property entrances, Some are very good but a lot are small, overgrown, faded, and just hard to see. So please, if your property is poorly identified then now is the time to enhance your entrance with some big clear numbers that are easy to see.

The other issue we found was fire plugs and their maintenance. Now we do try to check them regularly but with more being put in, the checking of them is a larger task.

"Adopt a Fire Plug"

In the event of a fire emergency in your street, could firefighters locate and be able to access the nearest Fire Plug? Delays in locating and ‘hooking-up’ to a Fire Plug can seriously hamper a fire suppression operation, raising the risk of injury and possibly resulting in additional property damage.

Inverleigh CFA encourages residents to 'Adopt a Fire Plug' by ensuring the Fire Plug nearest your property is kept clear, visible and accessible at all times. You can help by:

•Clearing soil, grass and shrubs from around the Fire Plug

•Keeping vehicles clear

•Reporting any visible faults, damage or missing markers (by messaging us on Facebook).

Each Fire Plug should have a white post (with a blue reflective marker on it) within a few metres and if the passing road is sealed, there should also be a blue reflective marker glued onto the road surface adjacent to the Fire Plug.

Why not get the kids involved, "adopting" a Fire Plug is a great way to participate in and learn about fire safety.

As much as we enjoy the Christmas celebrations, our pets may find it a bit scary.

Pets thrive on consistency and feeling safe.

With changes to their home environment and extra guests some pets may experience anxiety. Also, they may get into a bit of trouble with the Christmas decor and foods.

Here are some tips for a safe and happy Christmas.

Quiet Safe Space - providing your pet with a quiet space to retreat away from all the noise will help them remain calm.

Exercising your pets prior to having guests over will increase the likelihood they will use the celebration time to have a nap.

If you have a kitten or cat who loves to climb, ensure your Christmas tree is safely secured to the ground.

Christmas trees look like a storage facility for lots of new toys of all different shapes and sizes. Check your ornaments for sharp objects such as pins and hooks.

Shards from broken ornaments and long pieces of tinsel can be a chocking hazard and harmful to your pets intestines.

Human Food - Christmas foods involve some of the most toxic substances for pets.

36 Leigh News Preparations for the 2022 School Year

The Whole School Orientation Day for our new and current students in 2022 will be held on Tuesday 7th December. Students will have the opportunity to participate in classroom activities, meet their teachers and make new friends. We are looking forward to welcoming our new students and their families and hope that they have a smooth transition into our school. The school has experienced significant growth over the course of 2021 and with our 2022 cohort of Foundation students, we anticipate commencing the year with around 240 students.

Year 6 Graduation

Students will celebrate their Graduation during a Graduation Ceremony at Teesdale Primary School followed by dinner with staff at the Fyansford Hotel.

As has become a tradition, we have produced a published book of the student’s memories and photos.

The students and teachers have worked very hard to complete this large task and we are very grateful for the student’s enthusiasm and support. Congratulations to all our graduating students and we wish you all the very best for the future.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON MOVE YOUR WAY Girls in Golden Plains Shire are invited to help co-design and shape Council’s new Move Your Way program.

Council is seeking feedback to understand the types of activities girls would like to have access to in Golden Plains Shire and what may prevent them from participating in these programs. The feedback submitted to Council will directly inform the development of the program which is set to begin Term 1, 2022.

Innovative activities will be developed as a result of the comments and will support girls to build confidence, social connections, develop new skills and increase physical activity in non-structured and non-competitive environments.

Move Your Way is aimed at removing the barriers to getting active faced by teenage girls aged 12 to 15 years.

Council secured a $9,750 grant from VicHealth’s Reimagining Health Grants to fund the co-design and delivery of the Move Your Way program for girls in Golden Plains Shire.

Mayor Cr Helena Kirby says Council is excited to deliver a program to ensure girls are empowered to take up physical activity.

“Evidence shows that 92% of Australian teens do not meet the Physical Activity Guidelines of 60 minutes a day, and females are disproportionally represented in this data. Often this comes from to a lack of confidence and fear of judgement, however, Move Your Way aims to remove these barriers, creating a safe and inclusive space for all girls to participate.

“We hope to hear from many interested young women with this engagement and look forward to working with them to design an exciting program that meets their needs and expectations. Council would like to thank VicHealth for its support of the Move Your Way program in Golden Plains Shire.”

Golden Plains Shire girls aged 12 to 15 years can complete the survey online at goldenplains.vic.gov.au/move-yourway.
