Letter from the President DEAR NEIGHBORS, We’ve recently celebrated a major milestone with the opening of the Bayhealth Hospital and Outpatient Center, Sussex Campus.

Everything was designed with the patient experience in mind. The all-private patient rooms improve the patient experience by creating a quiet environment where family members may comfortably stay in support of their loved one.

The design also maximizes the time medical staff and employees can spend with the patient. You can learn more about the patient rooms on page 4.

The new Emergency and Trauma Center is nearly three times the size of the previous department.

The expanded emergency center and improved operations will increase our ability to bring lifesaving care to patients quickly. You can read all about the new emergency center on page 6.

The Bayhealth Sussex Campus was also built around convenience. The Bayhealth Outpatient Center is conveniently located right on the Sussex Campus. The Outpatient Center offers a variety of services that can found on page 12. The new 20,000-square-foot Cancer Center is housed on the garden level of the Outpatient Center. Details on the new Cancer Center are on page 14.

Physician recruitment is critical, especially in southern Delaware. We’re leveraging new technology and design to assist with recruiting new doctors. You can learn more about those recruitment efforts and meet many of the new doctors who have already joined Bayhealth on page 20.

We want to thank the community members who came to our Community Open House event just prior to the opening in February. Our community members played a big role in the planning of the Sussex Campus. You can read more about their involvement on page 21 and see a great photo spread of our Open House event on page 18.

The Bayhealth Hospital and Outpatient Center, Sussex Campus and its surrounding acreage provide the space and capacity to meet the increasing demand for healthcare services in southern Delaware now and well into the future.

The design is adaptable for the growing population in Sussex County.

The Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus has three 24-bed Acute Care Units. Whether patients need an intermediate level of care or medical-surgical level of care, they receive it on an acuity-adaptable unit. This translates into less moving around in the hospital for patients once they’re admitted.

All of the patient rooms in the new Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus are private and include many amenities that will further boost patient comfort and safety.

SAME-SIDED ROOMS All rooms are identical in how they’re designed and laid out — everything from the bathroom to the trash cans is located in the same place in every room in the hospital. This provides a better patient experience and increases safety.

OTHER SAFETY MEASURES The bathroom in each patient room is located in the best place to lower risk of falls, according to industry research.

Other equipment such as safety rails and patient lifts are in every room to further ensure patient safety.

MEDICAL EQUIPMENT & COMPUTERS Each room also contains standard medical equipment and computers. This eliminates the carts that providers and other caregivers must wheel around from room to room.

NURSE SERVERS These storage units are located outside each patient room.

They have drawers and a longer cabinet to store supplies, medications, etc., to help keep staff organized and allow them to spend more time at the bedside.

ADDITIONAL AMENITIES Every room has large windows to let in natural light and recliners to encourage patients to move around. Family and visitors will have access to a sleeper sofa, a table, and outlets for charging their phones and other portable devices.

KEY INPUT Nearly 150 people, including Bayhealth employees, volunteers, patients, and community members, tested and voted on their favorite furniture samples for the new hospital and outpatient center during a Furniture Demo Fair. For patient rooms, this included sleeper sofas and recliners. In the end, all of the favored furniture was selected for the new hospital and outpatient center.

The Bayhealth Emergency and Trauma Center, Sussex Campus (ED) is nearly three times as big as the previous Bayhealth Milford Memorial ED. Julianne Wysocki, DO, medical director of the Bayhealth Emergency and Trauma Center, Sussex Campus, says the ability to do certain procedures at the bedside, room for diagnostic equipment and the ability to care for multiple injuries in a trauma situation are some of the benefits the additional space will provide for staff and patients alike.

Here are some other ways the new ED is built around you.

MORE TREATMENT BAYS There is a total of 30 bays, including two designated trauma bays with the capacity to hold two patients each.

DEDICATED BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SUITE This area provides a quiet and stable environment for patients requiring this type of care. The addition of the behavioral health suite also increases privacy and security for all patients.

ADDITIONAL SECURITY A security guard is posted outside in the lobby and the ED is badge access, further improving security for patients and staff.

EASIER ACCESS TO OPERATING ROOM & IMAGING There are elevators near the ED that go directly to the OR, while Imaging is located close by; both of these features will save time when treating patients.

ONE CENTRALIZED LOCATION All patients are in one location rather than split into a main ED and “fast track.”

EMPLOYED DOCTORS Bayhealth recently began employing the doctors, physician assistants and nurse practitioners who work in all three of its EDs versus using them on an independent, contracted basis.

This has resulted in more staffing and a better patient experience and flow.

The 4th floor of the Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus is home to Inpatient Rehabilitation. The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities recognized the unit and its healthcare team for providing the highestquality care, value and optimal outcomes for patients.

The Inpatient Rehab unit is designed to help patients regain their independence in an environment that’s welcoming and restorative.

TREATMENT FOCUSED ON YOU Patients who are cared for on the Inpatient Rehab unit are seen for a variety of reasons, including stroke recovery, neurological disorders, spinal cord injuries, cardiac or pulmonary disorders, limb amputations, and traumatic injuries. The healthcare team works with patients to overcome physical and medical barriers to mobility, selfcare, communication, feeding, and disease management.

SERVICES & A TEAM BUILT AROUND YOU Because the Inpatient Rehab unit is housed within Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus, patients have access to a host of medical specialists, wound care, pharmacy services, diabetes educators, dialysis, and diagnostic testing.

All patients are managed by a specialized care team consisting of a hospitalist who manages medical needs and a certified rehab physician who oversees the patient’s entire rehab process. And with the full gamut of rehab nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech language therapists, and social workers working with patients, and rooting them on every step of the way, patients literally have a care team that is built around them.

HIGHLIGHTS OF INPATIENT REHABILITATION • 40 large private patient rooms • Sunny, spacious gym with new equipment • Chef-prepared meals with a large, sunny dining room • Unlimited visiting hours to keep care partners and families close • Pet visitation to bring relief and smiles

DID YOU KNOW? The medical director of Inpatient Rehabilitation is Sameena K. Malhan, MD. She is certified in rehabilitation by the American Board of Physical Medicine.

The third floor of the new Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus houses the Center for Women and Infants and the Obstetrical Emergency Department (OBED). The unit has Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum (LDRP) rooms, where patients stay in the same room from admission to discharge, and 24/7 coverage by board-certified OB physicians. There are also exciting enhancements in terms of patient experience and care.

HUGE ROOMS The six LDRP rooms provide plenty of space for family bonding and accommodating the Baby-FriendlyÂŽ practice of rooming-in.

GREAT AMENITIES Each LDRP room has large windows with beautiful views, a sleeper sofa and a 52-inch television, and there is also a separate Family Lounge and private space for lactation consultation.

INCREASED SECURITY Along with being protected by the Hugs & Kisses infant security system, the floor is locked. Staff has badge access and patients, families and other visitors must be checked in.

EASIER ACCESS TO OPERATING ROOM The Operating Room is located just below on the second floor, providing quick and easy access for those patients requiring a C-section.

OBED The OBED provides specialized care for women who need it.

The OBED at Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus has one semi-private and two private rooms. The OBED is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and is staffed with a boardcertified OB-GYN doctor and an experienced OB registered nurse.

Whether you are coming in for bloodwork, therapy or other testing, the Bayhealth Outpatient Center, Sussex Campus offers a variety of outpatient services conveniently located right on the Sussex Campus.

In addition to the Cancer Center on the garden level, the Outpatient Center has three floors.

GARDEN LEVEL The garden level is home to an integrated cancer center.

It contains several design elements to enhance the patient experience, such as sliding glass panels separating the infusion bays, which give the option to converse with fellow patients when opened or to sit privately when closed.

The Cancer Center also features an abundance of natural light to brighten the rooms and a beautiful garden just outside the windows. You can read more about the Cancer Center on the next page.

FIRST FLOOR The first floor is where outpatient rehabilitation, including cardiopulmonary and physical, occupational and speech therapies, can be found. This floor is also where diagnostic services such as phlebotomy, EKG, PFT, stress tests, and other outpatient testing are located.

SECOND FLOOR The second floor is home to the Bayhealth Specialty Physician Clinics including colon and rectal surgery, general surgery, gastroenterology, and orthopaedics.

THIRD FLOOR The third floor is shelled for future expansion. As new specialties and innovations reveal themselves across the nation, we’ll have the space to bring them to southern Delaware.

EXPANDING SPACE FOR EXPANDED SERVICES Did you know the new Outpatient Center, Sussex Campus is approximately 74,000 square feet? While there are separate entrances to the Bayhealth Hospital and Bayhealth Outpatient Center, Sussex Campus, both entrances will offer free valet services. Valet services are available at the hospital entrance from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and at the Outpatient Center entrance from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday–Friday.

The Bayhealth Cancer Center is located on the garden level of the Outpatient Center directly adjacent to the hospital.

The new facility consolidates all healthcare providers that specialize in cancer into one place. This enables Bayhealth’s cancer care team of medical and radiation oncologists, surgeons, nurses, radiation therapists, social workers, and others to provide the best care and patient experience in a convenient location.

Here are some other ways the new Bayhealth Cancer Center, Sussex Campus is built around you.

LARGER SPACE The new Cancer Center is 20,000 square feet.

MORE EXAM ROOMS & CHEMOTHERAPY BAYS There are 11 exam rooms and 14 chemotherapy bays, including twice as many private infusion bays for chemotherapy treatments.

FLEXIBLE AREAS The treatment areas allow additional space for family members to sit while their loved ones receive treatment.

Sliding glass panels separate infusion bays, giving patients the option to converse with fellow patients when opened or sit privately when closed.

SERVICES & SUPPORT Services available at the Cancer Center include chemotherapy, radiation therapy and immunotherapy. For radiation therapy, a linear accelerator will offer patients in the southern region state-of-the-art image guidance, stereotactic radiation therapy and IMRT (intensity-modulated radiation therapy).

The Cancer Center also provides multidisciplinary conferences and nurse navigation support, as well as programs for supportive care, clinical research, genetic counseling, and survivorship.

The new Bayhealth Sussex Campus features new, state-ofthe-art imaging technology that will continue to provide the responsive, high-quality care for which Bayhealth is known.

The many enhancements keep patient needs at the forefront by streamlining processes, expanding access and providing the latest advances for diagnosis and treatment.

STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY A new addition to the Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus is an 1,150-square-foot interventional suite (much larger than a standard operating room) outfitted with the latest equipment. This suite facilitates improved coordination among specialties for procedures.

The Imaging Department (historically known as Diagnostic Imaging or Radiology) is equipped with advanced equipment that emits the lowest possible radiation exposure while helping to detect and diagnose medical conditions in the earliest stages.

• 3T MRI — wider opening provides more room and comfort for the patient, and twice the strength for the highest-quality images • Digital C-arms in the Operating Room for enhanced surgical imaging • Nuclear medicine equipment that includes a CT component — can perform two types of imaging at the same time for better accuracy in diagnoses IMPROVED CONVENIENCE & CARE More equipment will prevent scheduling delays and allow for same-day or next-day appointments (barring any insurance limitations). Faster check-in due to centralized scheduling and a new pre-registration process will decrease wait times. An additional CT scanner in Emergency and Trauma Center will also decrease patient wait times.

Another convenience is the new ability to schedule mammograms through MyChart patient portal.

NEW SERVICES New services now offered at the Bayhealth Sussex Campus include cardiac catheterizations, peripheral vascular diagnostic and interventional procedures, electrophysiology studies, and device implants including pacemakers and defibrillators.

Your support moved us It’s been an eventful few months at the Bayhealth Sussex Campus. Just prior to opening in early February, we hosted a Community Open House that was attended by over 8,000 community members. The event included guided tours, children’s activities, Milford Community Band, and a fireworks display. The community’s enthusiasm and excitement were amazing to see.

Just a few weeks later, on Feb. 5, 2019, we officially moved from Bayhealth Milford Memorial to the Bayhealth Sussex Campus. It was a highly coordinated effort to prepare for the move and begin operations at the new facility. Hundreds of Bayhealth employees were involved in the planning and preparation of the patient move.

Bayhealth team members also worked alongside EMS, first responders, police, health officials, as well as state, local and county leaders among many others to ensure the move was seamless.

We want to thank you, our community members and partners, for your support during these events. Your support ensured both the open house event and the move to the Sussex Campus were successful.

Numerous doctors have been hired, and more are expected to come on board in the coming months and years in order to better meet the demands of southern Delaware growth, and to help us meet our goal to expand the network of services and care downstate.

We’ve recruited top doctors in their fields to provide primary care to keep you and your family at your healthiest, diagnose and treat what’s been troubling you, and help maximize your functionality. Here’s a snapshot of how we’ve been growing our team to better serve you:

Community touch The Bayhealth Foundation is pleased to recognize the hundreds of individuals, families, groups, philanthropic foundations, and businesses that generously stepped forward to support the Campaign for Bayhealth — Phase III. Through many events and celebrations, our donors have left a lasting community touch on the Bayhealth Hospital and Outpatient Center, Sussex Campus.

The Sussex Campus project team brought the facility designs to life by creating full-size cardboard mock-ups of the future spaces within the hospital and outpatient center. Our donors had the opportunity to tour the spaces, ask questions and even provide suggestions for the design teams.

Donors like the Fannin family, community members, and Bayhealth employees and medical staff were invited to leave a lasting mark on the project by signing one of the final steel beams used in the Topping Out Ceremony. The beams are located on the seventh level of the hospital, near the helipad.

A proud moment as Bayhealth Foundation President Lindsay Rhodenbaugh announced that Bayhealth surpassed its Campaign for Bayhealth — Phase III ambitious $15 million fundraising goal in support of the Bayhealth Sussex Campus.

We couldn’t have done it without our generous donors In October 2017, the Bayhealth Foundation revealed it surpassed its ambitious $15 million fundraising goal as the Campaign for Bayhealth — Phase III, in support of the Bayhealth Sussex Campus, came to an end.

In all, more than 800 individuals, families, businesses, and charitable foundations joined the fundraising effort. The campaign secured its place among the most successful fundraising campaigns ever completed in southern Delaware.
