WELCOME
Editor’s Welcome Dear Readers
Welcome to this, our 37th Edition of Leicester Square. First of all I would like to pass on my thanks to the previous editor, Henry Kukiewicz for all of his hard work in setting up an excellent format for the production of the magazine, and quite frankly in making my job as your new editor much easier. I hope that you like the new look for the magazine, we have given the design a fresh new look for this, our tercentenary year. I am excited to include in this edition a new section for all of our sporting clubs and associations, to highlight some of the energy which goes into making Freemasonry Fun. Also in this edition we have seen an increase in stories of brethren who have visited lodges far and wide, as well as the usual news from the Masonic Centres within this Province. Don’t forget, if you would like to see past editions of Leicester Square, take a look at our provincial website where you will find every single edition, going back to issue 1 of “Masonic News” in 1998, with the headline story of our first ever open day at London Road. All back issues are also kept in our magnificent library. In this, our tercentenary year, it is going to be a busy time for us all so as ever, if you have a story that you feel is newsworthy, please get in touch! I would also like to invite any brother, who wishes to write into myself or any of the team with thoughts, questions, or comments about the magazine or the Province in general to please do so.

Festival for the Masonic Charitable Foundation which aims to raise £1.8 million in the Province over the next 5 years. He mentioned that the Province was one of the first to launch a Festival in support of the new Masonic Charitable Foundation which has brought together the lifechanging work of the four central Masonic charities which have operated separately since the 18th Century. Festival Appeals have been held for over 225 years to sustain the charitable work of Freemasons which is one of the very few who operate
Richard Hone then introduced W. Bro. Leslie Hutchinson, Chief Operating Officer for the Masonic Charitable Foundation, who gave an overview of the contribution of the Masonic Charitable Foundation and its predecessor charities to Freemasons and their family members in the Province of Leicestershire and Rutland where almost £1.6 million has been allocated in the past five years. The Tercentenary
Memorial Wood in Bradgate Park
The Memorial Wood is being funded by Leicestershire and Rutland Freemasons along with United Grand Lodge of England to enhance a small woodland at the Park to create a tranquil and reflective space. This project is one of a number of projects in Leicestershire and Rutland that will be supported to mark the 300th anniversary of the formation of the Grand Lodge of England in 1717. The small woodland plantation is located opposite the Cropston Reservoir. Currently the woodland is fenced and inaccessible, but a new path into the heart of the space from the main carriageway will be suitable for all visitors. As part of the proposals the woodland will be fenced with traditional parkland deer fencing, new hedgerow planted and the wildlife value of the area enhanced, with new glades and trees planted. Natural paths within the woodland will allow people to explore the wood, whilst seating and a central feature will ensure there is an area for quiet reflection and remembrance. A centrepiece within the wood will consist of a seating area along with a sculpture of a stag. The Memorial Wood will be officially opened on Thursday 5th October 2017 by the Pro Grand Master, R.W. Bro. Peter Lowndes.
Commemorative Blue Plaques Leicestershire and Rutland Freemasons will mark the 300th Anniversary of the formation of the first Grand Lodge of England, by installing commemorative blue plaques on Masonic Halls marking the first activity of Freemasonry in the area.
The plaques were made by local firm The Metal Foundry in South Wigston based on a design by the Provincial Communications Officer, W. Bro. Andy Green.
The plaques will be unveiled by the Provincial Grand Master of Leicestershire and Rutland, R.W. Bro. David Hagger, during the next few months.
On 24th June 1717, four lodges, which had existed for some time in London, formed the Grand Lodge of England which has since continued to administer lodges across the country including the 76 lodges and it’s 3,000 members in Leicestershire and Rutland.
Masonic Halls in Leicester, Loughborough, Hinckley, Syston, Melton Mowbray, Lutterworth, Market Harborough, Coalville and Ashby de la Zouch will each carry a unique plaque showing when the first Freemasons’ lodges were formed.
Freemasonry developed from the stonemasons who built the cathedrals to the modern day society aimed at self-improvement and its notable charitable work. The earliest records of a masonic lodge in Leicester was in 1739. Traditionally, lodges met in

taverns and inns before expansion resulted in purpose built halls. Lodges in Oakham and Uppingham, which currently meet in Oakham School and the Upper Cricket Pavilion, will have plaques erected at their original meeting places at Victoria Hall and the Falcon Hotel.

Light Blues Rugby Football Club chalk up the first win! The Provincial Rugby Team are now beginning to show what a talented group of athletes we have in the Province. Saturday 11th March 2017 will be marked in the records as the very first win of the Leicestershire and Rutland Light Blues Masonic Rugby Football Club.
The men turned out in their new kit which has been sponsored by Andrew Keenan, Director of Rugby, of the Enderby Lodge No.5061 and Bro. Richard Ward of the Round Table Lodge No.7762 The opposition for this momentous occasion was the Aylestonians, who provided a stern test for the Masonic team. The well fought competition was however won by our very own Light Blues, winning the game 40 – 14. A hat-trick of tries for Bro. Karl Harris put the visitors to the sword at the Vipers
ground in Blaby on a mild spring afternoon in perfect rugby conditions. It was Light Blue’s highest score this season and the players were extremely proud of their achievement. After the game Bro. Andrew Keenan said “this means so much to everyone associated with the club, to secure the first win was important and proved the hard work everyone had put in during training was worth while”. Bro. Jordan Crown had worked the Brethren hard on Thursday night and better communication and a desire to win was very much in evidence today.

Heard the one about every property buyer in the UK paying exactly77 the co77rrect a7mount of S7DLT on77 their p7urchases? No, neither have we. Your tax liability isn’t a joke. But conservative estimates indicate that at least 50% of buyers of residential and commercial property in the UK have those purchases assessed incorrectly for SDLT. Reliance by buyers on their solicitors, combined with a lack of awareness of the full complexities and continuous updates of the relevant legislation by those solicitors, mean that HMRC has been in receipt of millions of pounds in overpaid liabilities. Happily, there is a punchline that you’ll like. If you have bought property in the last three years, Cornerstone can analyse the details of your transaction and, where appropriate, write to HMRC on your behalf correcting any errors made and requesting a refund of your overpaid SDLT. There’s no upfront fee, no fee if the claim is unsuccessful, and nothing for you to do beyond supplying those initial details and then waiting for your cheque in the post. To find out more, or book your initial consultation, call Cornerstone today on 01858 439033 or email us at enquiries@ctatax.uk.com

St Martin’s Lodge - Visit by the
DPGM of Roxburgh
W. Bro. Roger Peutrill of St Martin’s Lodge No.3431 took advantage of a visit by his real life brother to invite him along to the lodge meeting in January 2017. The visiting brother, V.W. Bro. Michael, is the Worshipful Deputy Provincial Grand Master of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Roxburgh, Peebles and Selkirk Shires. The lodge held a short meeting after which they joined Guthlaxton Lodge No.7717 to witness a ceremony of raising and a very jolly combined festive board. The Lodge of Gratitude No.6514
As previously reported in Leicester Square, a generous donation of memorabilia was presented to the Lodge of Gratitude by Dr Anthony Howe. Many of these items will be on display in the various exhibitions planned to be held in the 2017 Tercentenary year. It later transpired that in addition to the Lodge of Gratitude memorabilia, there were also many other items relating to the Holmes Lodge, East Goscote Chapter, St Margaret’s Chapter Rose Croix and a gold jewel presented to W. Bro. Holmes on his achieving Grand rank in 1908 which has been presented to the Library and Museum. In the picture opposite Dr Howe is examining the WM’s collar worn by his father at the consecration meeting in 1948 and suitably inscribed as such. He is accompanied by W. Bro. Phil Caswell, the Worshipful Master of the lodge. Dr Howe and his sister Mrs Eileen Mann visited Freemasons Hall on the 17th May, 2016 and several boxes of books, collars and jewels were presented to the interested parties present. The Lodge of Gratitude members attending the Howe family presentation, were delighted to discover an array of letters and correspondence between the founder members of the lodge discussing the proposed formation of the lodge, it’s name, badge design and invoices for the collars and jewels purchased, the guest lists for the consecration festive board and the first summons issued. All the original copies of this paperwork have been filed in the Library and Museum archives.

CHARITY
4th February 2017
Cheque Presentation Morning
Leicestershire and Rutland Freemasons have donated £44,355 to local charities including those helping children and young people at a special event hosted by the Provincial Grand Master, David Hagger, at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester on Saturday 4th February 2017. The event was attended by the Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Lady Gretton and the Lord Mayor of Leicester, Cllr Stephen Corrall who were both recipients of awards. Lady Gretton received a total of £1,000 for the Lord-Lieutenant’s Award for Young People which celebrates the achievements of young people in Leicester and Leicestershire. She said: “Thank you very much to the Freemasons. There are some wonderful young people doing amazing things so we decided to start the awards 11 years ago in order to acknowledge these young people and what they do.” During his year in office, the Lord Mayor is supporting Leicester Children’s Holiday Centre (Mablethorpe) whose work provides disadvantaged children across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, with a free seaside holiday. The Leicestershire & Rutland Masonic Charity Association was therefore pleased to donate £2,000 to the Lord Mayor’s Appeal. The Lord Mayor said: “The Leicester Children’s Holiday Centre has been going for well over 100 years and at least 55,000 children have been there. These children will have never seen the sea or feel the sand between their toes because they come from such disadvantaged backgrounds. I’m really pleased that the Freemasons have supported my appeal and thank them very much.” 22

UNIVERSITIES SCHEME
Consecration of the
David Kenneth Williamson Lodge A number of Brethren from Leicestershire and Rutland made the special trip to Freemasons’ Hall, London on 5th December 2016 to witness the unique Consecration of the David Kenneth Williamson Lodge No.9938 which is the Installed Masters Lodge for the Universities Scheme.
In a very rare occurrence, the Pro Grand Master M.W. Bro. Peter Lowndes, Deputy Grand Master, R.W. Bro. Johnathan Spence and Assistant Grand Master, R.W. Bro. Sir David Wootton were all present to undertake the Consecration of the Lodge and subsequently to install the Past Assistant Grand Master and past President of the Universities Scheme R.W. Bro. David KWilliamson as its Primus Master.
Granite Chapter No.2028 and serve on the Universities Scheme committee were proud to be among the Founders of the Lodge.
Two Leicester based members, W. Bro. Dr. Andrew Green, Wyggeston Lodge No.3448, and W. Bro. Daniel Hayward, Castle of Leicester Lodge No.7767, who are also both members of the
The Provincial Grand Master R.W. Bro. David Hagger and Most Excellent Grand Superintendent Ex. Comp. Peter Kinder, along with representatives from the three Scheme Lodges and Chapter also attended including those from Wyggeston
Lodge No.3448: W. Bro. Kelvin Johnson, W. Bro. Simon Oldfield, W. Bro. Tom Bodycot and Bro. Tom Grant; those from Lodge of Science and Art No.8429: W. Bro. Chris Butlin and W. Bro. Bob Cornes and finally W. Bro.Paul Wallace representing Castle of Leicester Lodge No.7767 and Granite Chapter No.2028. During the meeting the Holy Bible which was presented to the Lodge by the Provincial Grand Master at the Annual Meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge on behalf of the Province of Leicestershire and Rutland and its Scheme Lodges and Chapter was used.
The Lodge of
Gratitude No.6514 holds a rare Installation A most unusual occurrence took place at the installation meeting in the Lodge of Gratitude.
A Provincial Rosette award is often given to well deserving brethren who have not attained the chair of King Solomon in their respective lodges. In this instance, Brother Neil de Voil who had previously received a Provincial Rosette award, was then led to progress within the Lodge of Gratitude and became Worshipful Master in late 2016. It is understood that this is one of a select few times in Leicestershire and Rutland that a Provincial Rosette Officer has attained the Chair of a Lodge, and we have to question if this has occurred at all in Freemasonry in general. The photograph shows the Installing Master W. Bro. Philip Caswell Prov G Stwd and the Worshipful Master Bro. Neil de Voil on this most memorable occasion.

LIGHT BLUES
Getting to Know
Bob Reay from the Light Blue Club The Light Blue Club is now a well-established part of Freemasonry in Leicestershire and Rutland, we asked one of the organisers, Bro. Bob Reay for an insight into his own views of the Light Blue Club.
1. How long have you been in Freemasonry (including which lodge and office) I joined Highcross Lodge No.4835 in January 2012 and am currently Inner Guard. I joined the Lodge through an old school friend after I had attended several of the ladies festivals in the years prior to me joining the Lodge. I had an interest in Freemasonry for a number of years prior as both my Grandfather and Great Uncle were brethren. My Grandfather being a member of the Newarke Lodge. 2. How long have you been a member of the Light Blue Club and why did you join This is an interesting one as every member of a Lodge in Leicestershire & Rutland can consider themselves a member of the Light Blue Club. We have no joining fee or sign up process and all Brethren in the province are welcome to attend our visits and social events. I first became an active member when I attended a social drinks event in the latter half of 2012. For those that know me it will not come as a big surprise that I was sold on that. It turned out to be a great bunch of people and always entertaining. 3. What made you want to take a leading role in the club Upon attending a subsequent Light Blue Club event which was a curry at a Restaurant on London Road I was sat next to Freddie Harris, our former chairman, and offered my assistance should it be required for helping out in the future. I was enjoying being a part of the Light Blue Club and wanted to help. A couple of months later I was on the Light Blue Club committee and haven’t looked back. 4. What has it done for you personally First and foremost I have met such a great bunch of people. There are people that I’ve known for relatively short periods of time and it feels like you’ve known them all your life. I think that comes largely from the bond we have as brothers as well as the informal environment that the Light Blue Club brings to something that is usually quite formal. It also gives me great satisfaction to be a part of offering this environment to other Brethren in the Province. 24
Leicester Square SPRING 2017
5. Why would you encourage others to join Its such a friendly and welcoming environment. Brethren can come along and meet new and interesting people. As well as our social events we also organise interesting Lodge Visits. In February of this year we travelled for a weekend in Budapest and a visit to St Stephen Lodge. Last year we visited Scotland and arguably the oldest Lodge in the world, Mother Kilwinning No.0! We also organised a trip to Bristol to see the Bristol workings of the Ceremony, not to mention our annual visit to Apollo University Lodge, Oxford. All of these give a fascinating insight into our fraternity as well as having a welcoming and active social element for those that like that kind of thing. 6. If someone wishes to know more, what should he do? All of our events and Lodge visits are publicised in the Bi-Monthly newsletter that we produce as well as on our Facebook page. The Facebook page is a private group so your membership of it is only visible to other members. If you would like more information then please drop myself or one of the committee an email. Bro. LIGHT BLUES
The Light Blue Club visit Budapest On Friday 3rd February, the Leicestershire and Rutland Light Blue Club set-off on what has become an annual trip to a foreign constitution. Following in the footsteps of Ireland and Scotland in recent years, this time it was to Hungary. Seven brothers from 5 different Lodges descended on Budapest to visit one of its most prestigious Lodges, St Stephen Lodge No.7. St Stephen Lodge can trace its history back to 1864 when it was consecrated as Hungary’s first Budapest Lodge. It uses a form of old Emulation Ritual and draws its membership from both the Hungarian and expatriate community in Budapest – although it also boasts a large international membership. Its members have included a Past Grand Master, Deputy Grand Master and other distinguished Grand Officers. The Brethren enjoyed sightseeing across the “Pearl of the Danube” throughout the weekend, and headed to the Lodge on Saturday afternoon. Occupying a donated set of rooms which once formed a Brother’s apartment in central Budapest, the visitors were warmly received into the temple and personally greeted by the Deputy Grand Master. Feeling the cold of Eastern Europe, the Grand Director of Ceremonies helped them settle in by providing glasses of the local spirit, Pálinka, before the meeting commenced. There then followed an initiation ceremony of extremely high quality, carried out by a multi-national team of Officers including those of English, Italian, French, Hungarian and Bulgarian origin.
www.pglleics.org.uk
All were then treated to a traditional Hungarian festive board held at one of the grandest hotels in Budapest, (which happened to be managed by one of the Brethren). The wine flowed, and afterwards members of the Lodge including the Worshipful Master and the new initiate took the party to some of the finest bars the capital had to offer.
During the evening the Deputy Grand Master educated the visitors with the interesting history of Freemasonry in Hungary, some of which is detailed below. As part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the history of Freemasonry in Hungary parallels that of all Central Europe. The first Hungarian Lodge is documented in Transylvania in 1749. The Hungarian Emperor started to suppress Masonry in about 1780. Hungary became a separate kingdom in 1867, enabling Freemasonry to formally re-establish itself. In addition to St Stephen Lodge which was warranted in 1864, seven further lodges were erected under the Grand Lodge in 1870.
LeicsFreemasons
By the First World War, the Grand Lodge possessed 32 lodges in Budapest and 52 in wider Hungary, with over 10,000 members. Sadly, the Grand Lodge was dissolved by decree in 1920, and by the end of the Second World War there were only about 300 Masons left in the country. The Grand Lodge was revived in 1946 and by 1950 membership had recovered to 1500, although the Communist takeover saw a large increase in Masonic emigration. On 12 June 1950, the secret police occupied and confiscated the Grand Lodge building in Budapest, and the Grand Lodge was forcibly dissolved. Following the fall of the communist regime in 1989, Symbolic Grand Lodge of Hungary was re-consecrated under the sponsorship of the Grand Lodge of Austria. The Grand Lodge celebrated 250 years of masonry in Hungary in 1999. As ever, the Brethren had a fantastic time and promised to go back as soon as possible, receiving an invite to the Installation meeting later in the year. Plans are already in motion for the next trip abroad, so watch this space for more information soon! Once again, the Leicestershire and Rutland Light Blue Club have set a high bar for other ‘Young Masons’ clubs to aim for!

Celebration of
W. Bro. Reg Dickinson’s 50 Years Service At the January 2017 meeting of St Wilfrid’s Lodge No.8350 at Market Harborough, the Lodge was honoured by the presence of the Provincial Grand Master, R.W. Bro. David Hagger, accompanied by W. Bro. Mark Hancock, Provincial Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies. The purpose of the visit was to present a Certificate to W. Bro. Reginald Dickinson PPSGW, recording his 50 years of service to Freemasonry. Reg was born on 30th September 1934 and lived in Orrell, to the west of Wigan, in industrial Lancashire, until the latter years of the war, when his father, an engineer, was ‘posted’ to Whetstone to work on Frank Whittle’s jet engine development team. He then attended the Dixie Grammar School, where he says his school years were unremarkable. Reg spent the majority of his professional life in the food industry. He started in 1956 with FoxMackintosh (latterly Nestlé UK) – and subsequently between 1969 and 1989 worked with The Imperial Group (including HP Foods, Golden Wonder, Lea & Perrins, Hanson and Danone). This took him to many parts of the world, including Ethiopia (working on the famine relief programme), Chile, Turkey, Iran, most EU countries, the USA and Canada.
www.pglleics.org.uk
Reg was initiated in St Martin’s Lodge, No.3431, in December 1966 and joined St Wilfrid’s Lodge, as a founder in 1971 - he is our last remaining founder following the recent loss of Ron Jacques. He was Master in 1980 and was only the second Master to have served in all the offices, having been appointed as a Steward at the Consecration and having followed Ron Jacques throughout. He was Exalted into the Reynard Chapter No.9285 in 1993 - and he is also involved in other Orders. In the Lodge, W. Bro. Reg was appointed as Chaplain in 1983 and held the office for 8 years. In Provincial Grand Lodge, he was appointed as a PPAGDC in 1988 and has progressed through PPSGD, PPGSwdB, PPJGW to his current rank of PPSGW, which he received in November 2016.

ROYAL ARCH MATTERS
Royal Arch Dinner Dance
On Saturday, 28th January, at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester, the Royal Arch Dinner Dance attracted a full house of Companions and their ladies for an evening of good food, good music and good company. Following the success of the previous year’s ‘New York, New York’ night, this year’s event had a simple ‘Black and White’ theme. The evening started with a drinks Reception in the Morley Lounge and Dining Room at 7.00 pm, when the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, Peter Kinder, and his wife Sandie, circulated amongst the guests. They were supported by the Deputy Grand Superintendent, Noel Manby and Jackie, the Second Provincial Grand Principal, Paul Wallace and Anna and the Third Provincial Grand Principal, John Peberdy with Joan Sharpe. Jonathan Varley, Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies, acted as MC. The Dinner started with a Tian of Avocado & Crayfish Tails, followed by a Duo of Lamb Noisettes with a rich Port Jus with Potatoes, Peas, Carrots and Shredded Cabbage and finished with a Cassis Mousse with Cream all finished off with Coffee and Mints. Dancing during the evening was to the ABBA Tribute Group, the Paul Tamsan Singers, including many of their best known songs. The dance floor was soon full, with everyone enjoying the relaxed and convivial atmosphere - even Peter and Sandie, having posed for their formal photograph, let their hair down before the end of the evening. There were no formal speeches during the evening, but the Grand Superintendent gave a brief welcome before the meal was served – and especially thanked David Turner and Peter Williamson in the Scribes’ Office for making all the arrangements.
Top Mark’s for Uppingham in Rutland Chapter!
In October 2016 the Uppingham in Rutland Chapter No.9119
held their annual installation ceremony, however this year brought about a somewhat unusual occurance, as all three are called Mark! As depicted in the photograph from left to right Marc Hamblin (Haggai), Mark Adams (Zerubbabel) and Mark Thompson-O’Connor (Joshua).

Master Masons’ & New
Exaltees’ Evening
On Tuesday 29th November 2016, Brethren and Companions gathered together for this annual event - with an enthusiastic attendance of some 19 Master Masons, 7 New Exaltees, 14 Royal Arch Reps and 27 supporters, including Officers of Supreme Grand Chapter and Provincial Grand Chapter. In addition, this year, we had 3 representatives from the Linconshire Province, who wanted to see how our event was organised. Again this year the Master Masons and New Exaltees met in different rooms and received separate presentations tailored to their particular situations. The Master Masons’, meeting in the Oliver Lodge Room, received the three-part Royal Arch Lecture on the history, symbolism and format of the Royal Arch Order – that fourth and final step in a Freemason’s journey through ‘Pure Antient Masonry’ - from Initiation to Exaltation. The three parts of the Lecture were delivered by E.Comps. David Turner (Provincial Grand Scribe E), Paul Wallace (Provincial Second Grand Principal) and Jonathan Varley PGDC. Before delivering the Lecture, the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, E.Comp. Peter Kinder, Paul Wallace and Jonathan Varley demonstrated the Opening and Closing ceremonies to the Third Degree – to highlight the references therein relevant to the Royal Arch.
impressive sight for the Master Masons. There were then some concluding remarks by the Provincial Grand Master, R.W. Bro. David Hagger and by the Grand Superintendent, E.Comp. Peter Kinder. Mention was made of the White Ribbon Club - a social forum for young Companions to meet together and share their experiences, based on the format of the Light Blue Club - the two work closely together. At the end of proceedings, all were invited to partake of a complimentary buffet supper, when the Brethren and Companions were able to meet the rulers of the Craft and the Royal Arch and exchange experiences with their contemporaries.
The New Exaltees, meeting in the Morley Lodge Room, received a presentation by the Deputy Grand Superintendent, E.Comp. Noel Manby, and the Third Provincial Grand Principal, E.Comp. John Peberdy intended to give them a better understanding of the form and content of the Exaltation Ceremony, using a question and answer format. This is intended to expand on the content of the booklet entitled ‘The Exaltation Ceremony Explained’, which every Exaltee receives from the Grand Superintendent after they have joined Chapter. After these two separate presentations, the two groups came together in the Oliver Lodge Room, with the New Exaltees processing into the Oliver in full regalia – an

ROYAL ARCH MATTERS
60 Years in the Royal Arch
At St Peter’s Chapter, on Thursday, 16th February 2017, E.Comp. Alfred Newton received a certificate recording the fact that he had completed 60 years as a Royal Arch Mason. In the absence of the Grand Suprintendent, E.Comp. Peter Kinder, and his Deputy, E.Comp. Noel Manby, the presentation was made by E.Comp. Paul Wallace PGStB, the Second Provincial Grand Principal, who was accompanied by E.Comp. Clive Thorpe, ProvAGDC. In recognition of E.Comp. Alf’s achievement there were many visitors present, including several Officers of Supreme Grand Chapter. Alf Newton was originally Exalted into the Royal Arch, under the Scottish Constitution, having been Initiated in Lodge Forfar and Kincardine (No.225, SC) in September 1956. As was the custom in those days in Scotland, he took the Mark Degree in Lodge Forfar and Kincardine (reminiscent of the early practices of the ‘Ancients’ in England) - he then joined Chapter Union No.6 (SC) in 1957. In Scotland Chapters are always opened in the Mark degree, then progress through the Excellent Master ceremony, known in England as the ceremony of passing of the veils, before opening the
Chapter. Alf has subsequently been made an Honorary Life Member of the Chapter. E.Comp. Alf Newton joined St Peter’s Chapter No.1330 in 1997 and served as First Principal in 2010 and has subsequently served as Treasurer for 5 years. In Provincial Grand Chapter, he was appointed to the office of PPGStB in 2012. At the Festive Board, Alf was surprised by the presentation of a celebration cake, iced as a Royal Arch Apron, which he had great pleasure in cutting, before pieces were distributed to all present.
The photograph shows E.Comp. Alf with E.Comps. Paul Wallace and Clive Thorpe and the three Principals of St Peter’s Chapter, E.Comp. Andy Hardy-Smith (Z), E.Comp. Graham Allen (H) and E.Comp. Andrew Moore (J). 30

After serving in many roles in the Chapter and the Province, E.Comp Derek was eventually promoted to Past Provincial Grand Scribe Nehemiah in 1990, before attaining Grand Rank and rising to become Grand Scribe Nehemiah in 2002 – a particular honour for him and the Province.

significant achievement
On 5th October 2016, Excellent Companion Derek Buswell celebrated 50 year’s membership of the Royal Arch – a rare achievement, recognised by a presentation by the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, E.Comp. Peter Kinder, at the recent meeting of the Chapter of the Flaming Torch. Having been Initiated into the Lodge of the Flaming Torch, No.4874, on 10 April 1958, E.Comp. Derek was exalted in the Chapter of the Flaming Torch on
In recognition of the significance of the occasion, the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent was accompanied at the meeting by the full team of Provincial Officers and a large number of Grand Officers, who processed formally into the Chapter. After an impressive Exaltation ceremony, with Bro. Perry George Stewart-Halford as the candidate, the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent made the formal presentation of the Certificate to E.Comp. Derek, recounting his distinguished service and achievements during his long career in the Province and nationally.
After recounting many personal memories of E.Comp. Derek’s contributions to the Craft and the Royal Arch, the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent asked the Provincial Grand Scribe E, E.Comp. David Turner, to read the certificate, which he then formally presented - to prolonged applause by all those present. E.Comp. Derek thanked the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, recording his pleasure on receiving the Certificate and his enjoyment of his long association with the Chapter.
First Universities Scheme Exaltee in Leicestershire and Rutland The Granite Chapter No.2028, which meets at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester, welcomed its first member through the Universities Scheme since joining in November 2015. The Granite Chapter is one of only three Universities Scheme Chapters in the country providing a suitable home for those Scheme Initiates who wish to complete their ‘Pure Antient Masonry’. The other Scheme Chapters are Ravensbourne Chapter No.1601 in London and Universities Chapter Yorkshire No.4047. Comp. Adam Tilley, who is a Law student at the University of Leicester, joined Freemasonry in February 2015 when he was initiated, as part of the Universities Scheme, in the Wyggeston Lodge No.3448. Since becoming a Master Mason in April 2016, he has been anxious to complete his Craft degrees by being exalted into the Holy Royal Arch.

LIBRARY/MUSEUM
A Puzzling Tale Whilst going about his daily business, our very own Librarian & Curator, W. Bro. Danny McKeown discovered an anomaly in one of our historical records. Some of you may recall the photograph, pictured here, adorning the walls of our excellent library and museum in previous years, this portrait, of Chavalier D’Eon de Beaumont (1728 – 1810) came with a fascinating story, which read as follows: In 1756 D’Eon received an appointment at the Court of Louis XV, and continued a successful career in the diplomatic world. He was initiated in La Loge de L’Immortalitie de l’Ordre, No.376 of the Moderns Grand Lodge in 1768. Fearing an attempt to kidnap him by French conspirators, Earl Ferres gave him shelter for a time at Staunton Harold. In 1777 following much adverse publicity D’Eon admitted being a woman, and on the King’s command ‘to resume the garments of her sex; which he did for the rest of his life. After his death an autopsy proved that the deceased had been of the male sex.
This is where eagle-eyed Danny spotted an alternative view, to be found in the Grand Lodge Museum Volume 2 from 1938, where the same picture read: Initiated in Lodge of Immortality No.303 in 1770; born 1728; Captain of French Dragoons 1758: Ambassador from Louis XV to Court of St.James 1770-7; adopted female attire in 1771, and wore it continually from 1777 until his death in 1810. The picture, in female attire with Masonic regalia 1771, was attended by Dr. Walker, on giving birth to twins. One story with two different outcomes, was Chavalier D’Eon de Beaumont a man, or indeed a woman?

DEVONSHIRE COURT
Guthlaxton Lodge Entertain the
Residents of Devonshire Court
Guthlaxton Lodge, with the help of the musical trio of Timeless, entertained the residents of Devonshire Court with any array of classic songs, drinks and raffle at their annual visit. Worshipful Master W. Bro. Dorian McKillop, Worshipful Master Elect Bro. Carl Ackers and Almoner Neville Hudson were supported by W. Bro. Robert Hargrave and Bro. John Sanderson, along with their wives and partners. The entertainment was well received by the residents, as were the panoply of raffle prizes. Guthlaxton Lodge No.7717 has been visiting the residency in Oadby for many years, which it is proud to do, especially as the origins of the lodge were from the Oadby area, with a stipulation once being that any members needed to reside within Oadby and Wigston. That requirement has long been dropped, but the history of the lodge has not been forgotten, and they consider that their annual visit is an acknowledgment of that history. W. Bro. John Kendrick thanked the Brethren and families of Guthlaxton Lodge for their time and efforts and expressed that they all looked forward to their visit every year.
Farewells
Sincere thanks and best wishes were presented to the Worshipful Master, officers, brethren and helpers of Guthlaxton Lodge for providing the entertainment.
We are sad to announce the passing of the following Brethren to the Grand Lodge above and our thoughts go to their families and loved ones. Each one will be missed but not forgotten.

Side Orders Breakfast On Saturday 18th February 2017, the Light Blue Club and the White Ribbon Club demonstrated how well the different orders of our province work together, as they organised a Side Orders Breakfast. With many orders within Freemasonry, members of the Light Blue Club and the White Ribbon Club are regularly asked which side order should be the next step, the three most commonly asked of are the Royal Arch, Knights Templar & Rose Croix. As such these were the focus of this year’s side orders breakfast. The morning included presentations from the heads of these three orders and other high ranking provincial officers. There were short presentations and information on the three orders and opportunities to ask any questions and to view the regalia of the respective orders. After the presentations and discussions there was a Full English
Breakfast served buffet style in the Morley Suite. There was a total of 32 brethren present, many of whom have advised that they are now going to join one or more of the orders following the presentations.
If you would like any further information on what was included in the Side Orders Breakfast, please contact either Bob Reay bob@lightblueclub.co.uk or Dominic Rapsey, dom@whiteribbonclub.co.uk
