Fond Farewell

Well as they say………..”they think its all over….it is now!” After 8 years as Editor of the Leicester Square, I have decided to stand aside so that a new fresh set of eyes can take over the editorial reins of this fine publication. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in helping to develop the Leicester Square so that it is the bright, informative but above all enjoyable publication. It is now not only read by members but also their families, friends and by those whose loved ones have passed away and who are keen to keep in touch. There was debate some time ago about only issuing Leicester Square electronically but the PGM robustly supported that it stay in hard print format ensuring that everyone could have easy access. This publication doesn’t just happen and my personal thanks go to all those who have contributed to it by either submitting stories, helping with advertising, supplying information and making sure that we produce a quality and fit for purpose source of information for all to enjoy. The Leicester Square Committee chaired by Jim Williamson, have been tremendous in working together so well as a team and having fun at the same time. In particular I thank all past and present Committee members for their support and hard work over the years. Richard Barnett will now be taking over as Editor. He has excellent skills and has, no doubt, some new ideas which will further enhance the presentation and content of future issues. I look forward even more now to receiving my own copy of Leicester Square and keeping up to date with what has happened and what is planned to happen in our Province. I wish you all well…….and even happier and enjoyable reading to you all in the future. Kind regards

Henry Kukiewicz (Past Editor!) PS. All previous copies of Provincial Newsletters dating back to 1998 are now viewable on the Provincial website or in the Provincial Library.

OUR EDITOR STEPS DOWN I wish to inform all our readers that W Bro. Henry Kukiewicz Ratae Meridian Lodge (9673) is stepping down after eight years as our Editor. During this time, W Bro. Henry played a significant role in bringing this Magazine to the standard and quality it enjoys today, the envy of all the surrounding Provinces. Apart from the hard work and long hours involved, he has brought a truly professional approach to our publication, as well as being a lively and friendly member of my Committee, despite the long journeys he has regularly undertaken from Buxton. He deservedly wishes to spend more time with his wife and his other pressing masonic commitments and concentrating on his important role as District Recorder of the Ancient and Accepted Rite (L&R).

The Freemasons’ Hall Street Party Celebrates the 90th Birthday of

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II The bunting was out as Freemasons' Hall, Leicester dressed to impress with the Union Flag flying high to celebrate the 90th Birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in the style of a street Party. The dining halls were packed as Freemasons, family and friends gathered to celebrate the Royal birthday with sandwiches, tea, cakes and songs from the 1920's through to modern day. The Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. David Hagger kicked off the occasion, before handing over the microphone to stars of the show, Phillip & Judy Dodd and Marguerite Beatson, who raised the roof with

expert renditions of classic hits from throughout the ages. Songs were selected from each of the decades, with titles such as 'Somewhere over the Rainbow', 'There'll be Bluebirds over the white cliffs of Dover', and Abba's 'Thank you for the Music'. The afternoon had something for everyone. For the many children that were present a table had been prepared just for them, with activities such as crown making and colouring, enough to keep them entertained whilst they waited for the cakes to be served! The fun was rounded off with flag waving and singing which had everyone up on their feet. It was of course a double celebration for most people, as only the day before Leicester City had been crowned Premier League Champions for the first time.

On behalf of the Province, I thank him most sincerely for all his efforts and the warm friendship provided to me personally and wish him well in all his future endeavours. Our new Editor is Bro. Richard Barnett Granite Lodge (2028) who brings with him a wealth of communications and IT skills. I look forward to working with him and wish him every success in his forthcoming and important role.

W Bro. Jim Williamson, Chairman Leicester Square.

Rugby in the Province -

The Provincial

Rugby Team

After months of planning, the day finally arrived when on a damp summers night at the end of August, a group of Brethren from across the Province made history by turning up for the Leicestershire and Rutland Light Blues Rugby Club's first training night in preparation for the season ahead. The training session was organised by Director of Rugby Bro. Andrew “Jock” Keenan (Enderby Lodge 5061) who commented “It was a great turn out especially with it being during the school holidays, the training session was very light in nature and really involved a ‘getting to know you’ session followed by a 45 minutes game of Rugby 7s which was enjoyed by all. We want to encourage as many Brethren in the Province to get involved with this Rugby Club, so if you are interested please contact me at Enderby Lodge. It will be a great way of meeting new friends and players on a very social basis”.

Committee had contributed something in true Masonic spirit from seeking a ground to designing the new kit. W Bro. Daniel also added that thanks really must go to the Vipers Rugby Club for making us so welcome and allowing this to be our home ground and for supporting our application for LRU Membership by proposing us, this was seconded by Aylestone Athletic RFC. Bro. Samuel Harris, Golden Fleece (2081)) Light Blues Rugby Chairman confirmed “We’re currently trying to spread the message about Light Blues Rugby Club. We are interested in encouranging both young and old Freemasons to take part. So please get in touch and get your boots polished ready for a fun filled season with fixtures against local sides and other Provinces across the Country”. Club Official Positions W Bro. Paul Toon – President (7736 Sir John Corah Lodge) Bro. Samuel Harris – Chairman (2081 Golden Fleece) W Bro. Daniel Quelch – Secretary (7801 Rothley Temple Lodge) W Bro. Paul Cave – Treasurer (4656 Holmes Lodge) Bro. Andrew Jock Keenan - Director of Rugby (5061 Enderby Lodge) Bro. Mark Edwards - Asst. Head Coach (7801 Rothley Temple Lodge) Bro. W Bro. Daniel Quelch (Rothley Temple Lodge 7801) who is the Light Blues Rugby Club Secretary, also attended this training session, he commented “the Light Blues Rugby Club had been founded in April 2016 when a founding committee had been formed, the club has now been formally constituted with approval from the Leicestershire Rugby Union (“LRU”) in early September 2016. He went on to say “Everyone on the Light Blues

Leicestershire and Rutland Freemasons celebrate

Leicester City Football Club’s Premiership title Freemasons across Leicestershire and Rutland, including the Provincial Grand Master, have been celebrating their local football team, Leicester City Football Club, on their fairytale end to the season when they were crowned unlikely champions of the English Premier League. Having been near to relegation in the previous season, Leicester City Football Club had odds of 5000/1 to win the Premiership at the start of the 2015/16 season. Under the management of Claudio Ranieri and players such as Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez, the Foxes have beaten those odds in an extra-ordinary climb to the Premiership title, the first in their 132 year history.

W Bro. Jamie Mollart, Past Master of the Wyggeston Lodge (3448), said: “What we’re seeing is beyond my wildest dreams. I can’t believe it’s happening in my lifetime and I’ve been in the stadium to witness it throughout the season. If you’d have told me at the start of the season that we would claim the world’s biggest football prize, I would have just laughed it off. It is truly an amazing achievement.” The Provincial Grand Master of Leicestershire and Rutland, RW Bro. David Hagger said: "As a season ticket holder for Leicester City, I congratulate them on behalf of the Leicestershire and Rutland Freemasons on their wonderful achievement which has captured the hearts across the footballing community. I very much look forward to the year ahead when Leicester City are competing in Europe.”

Former player and Captain of Leicester City and Past Master of the Lodge of Welcome (5664), W Bro. Jeff Blockley, said: "I would like to offer my congratulations to all the staff and supporters. What a fantastic once in a lifetime achievement brought about by the owners, manager, players and supporters which has brought untold success to Leicester." Provincial Grand Mentor W Bro. Ken Wylie, of St John's Lodge (279), missed the last home game when the Champions lifted the trophy: "After supporting Leicester City for years and not missing a home match all season, we have ended up on holiday in Cologne Germany on a river cruise... on the most prestigious game of our lives. Not to be outdone, we were wearing our shirts with pride and cheering them on lifting the Premier League Cup." Bro. Karl Coles, Edward Sherrier Lodge (6757) said: "I've waited since 1983 for this dream to come true!" The Master of the Leicestershire and Rutland Lodge of Installed Masters (7896), W Bro. John Peberdy, recalls: "I was first taken to Leicester City by my Grandfather some 50 years ago. His name was Arthur Smith and he was an avid supporter and many people knew him at the City. I hope he is looking down on this fantastic achievement as it would have been the proudest day of his life."

Newer Brethren attend

‘Beginning

your Masonic Journey’ seminar Over 70 newer Brethren gathered at Freemasons' Hall on Saturday 5th March 2016 to participate in a seminar aimed to assist in understanding more about the fraternity. The seminar was chaired by VW Bro. Peter Kinder, Assistant Provincial Grand Master, and was given by the Provincial Training Officer, W Bro. Andy Green, and the Provincial Grand Orator, W Bro. Andrew Painter. The Seminar, titled 'Beginning Your Masonic Journey' covered a broad range of subjects including the ceremonial aspects, progression to become Master of a Lodge, the roles of officers and promoting interest in other aspects of the Craft and beyond. There was also a focus on how each member can act as an ambassador for Freemasonry. Bro. Steve Newham from Framland Hundred Lodge (9453) which meets in Melton Mowbray said: "It was a very interesting & informative seminar. I think it is an ideal way for new-made Brethren to expand their knowledge & understanding of Freemasonry, and I will be strongly recommending it to our new Initiates."

The next training seminar will be held on Saturday 11th April 2017 and will be focussing on those in office as Deacons and Wardens.

Tercentenary

Sky TV programme Over the past few months, Leicestershire and Rutland Freemasons have been filmed as part of the forthcoming new four-part documentary ‘Inside The Freemasons’ to be shown on Sky 1 this winter. The exclusive documentary will feature the most in-depth look ever at the Freemasons in the run up to our 300th anniversary in 2017. With footage of Masonic ceremonies, never seen before on television, ‘Inside The Freemasons’ uses unprecedented access to the United Grand Lodge of England and its Lodges to introduce viewers to members of the society as it approaches its tercentenary next year. The Provincial Grand Master RW Bro. David Hagger and the Assistant Provincial Grand Master VW Bro. Peter Kinder have both been filmed for the programmes. David Hagger said: "This is a wonderful opportunity for us to show the public what Freemasonry is and how we contribute to our local communities. I thank all of the members of our Lodges for their co-operation in giving access to the documentary makers." The documentary series will also feature other members of lodges, including the Wyggeston Lodge (3448) and Showmen's Lodge (9826), sharing what it means to be a Freemason in the modern age. Peter Kinder, said: "This is an amazing opportunity for Freemasons to get a strong message to the public that Freemasonry is a very open society. They will see inside Freemasonry and realise just what fantastic charitable work we do and the incredible amount of money donated to local charities. This documentary will help to do this and show a society that is celebrating 300 years with over 200,000 members of all ages and walks of life across England and Wales."

Provincial Roadshow As part of the Tercentenary celebrations, during the summer and also next year, Leicestershire and Rutland Freemasons will be attending several County Shows for the first time in their history to mark the 300th Anniversary of the formation of the first Grand Lodge of England. Members of the Province will be attending the Leicestershire County Show together with other shows including the Ashby Show and Market Bosworth Country Show. They will be on hand to answer questions about Freemasonry, what it is all about and why it continues to attract a strong membership. Branded stands and literature will be available to hand out to interested visitors. If you are attending any of these shows… please step up and make yourself known.

Provincial LODGE NEWSNEWS

A Shining Beacon at 18 Bro. Joshua Symonds was initiated, on his 18th Birthday in May 2015, into the Beacon Lodge (5208) in Loughborough by dispensation of the PGM RW Bro. David V Hagger. Joshua, who is a gamekeeper, subsequently gained a position as Under Keeper on a large estate at the Chateau de La Verrerie in Aubigny-sur-Nere in France. This meant that, as Joshua was working abroad, he was unable to attend the Beacon Lodge until mid January when he returned to be passed to the Second Degree and also to visit a number of local Lodges in and around Loughborough. During a festive board on one of these visits, a plan was hatched by his father, W Bro. Garry Symonds and other Brethren, to take Joshua to a French Lodge in Bourges, near to where he works. On the evening of the 3rd May 2016, three members of the Beacon Lodge travelled to France and accompanied young Bro. Joshua to a meeting of “La Loge Ad Augusta, Per Angusta No 617” (Through Difficulty to Greatness), by very kind invitation of the Brethren of the Lodge.. The Lodge is a small Provincial Lodge way off the beaten track and had never received foreign visitors before; a very warm and generous welcome was given to the visitors, which was gratefully received. At the festive board, the hand of friendship was further extended to Bro. Joshua when the Worshipful Master, W Bro. Frédéric Heurtebise, invited him to attend the Lodge at their next meeting and for him to continue this practice through the next season. The Brethren from the Beacon Lodge then presented an engraved silver loving cup to the Lodge, to mark their visit and to be used in ceremonial form at the Installation meetings.

Gayton Taylor Sunday Lunch Gayton Taylor Lodge (9176) held their annual Spring Lunch at Leicestershire Golf Club, Evington on Sunday 15th May 2016. The Worshipful Master, W Bro. Steven Peck, and his wife Susie welcomed over 50 guests to a superb Sunday lunch. The event was a great success and well attended for a small Lodge, supported by many guests and visitors. A raffle was held for the Lodge Discretionary Fund which raised £365 with virtually everyone going home with at least one prize thanks to the generosity of all the members. The next Lodge social event will be a skittles night on Friday 14th October 2016 at Thurcaston when all visitors will be welcome.

Saint James’ £1,000 Donation On 12th May Saint James’ Lodge held a fund raising curry night at the Martin Inn for members of the Lodge, their guests and friends. There were 45 present raising nearly £700 which when added to funds from a similar earlier event has enabled Saint James’ Lodge to make a £1,000 donation to Rainbows. An amazing £300 was donated by three of those present, this was offered on the proviso that the WM removed his Leicester City shirt and donned a restaurant apron and another Brother's shirt, which he sportingly did.

Ferrers & Ivanhoe Lunch On Sunday 3rd July 2016, the Master of the Ferrers & Ivanhoe Lodge (779), David Coxon and his wife Carolyn hosted a Sunday Brunch in the palatial surroundings of the Pavilion at the Branston Golf and Country Club, Burton upon Trent. Sixty Brethren, from the Ashbyde-la-Zouch based lodge, in the company of their families and friends enjoyed an informal carvery meal in the Chatsworth Suite which provided scenic views over the golf course. The resident pianist provided light and entertaining music throughout. This very happy and successful event concluded with a raffle for the benefit of local Ashby charities which raised £300. The Master thanked everyone for their generosity and company, and looked forward to many other events in the future.

Uppingham in Rutland £925 Cheque On the 3rd June 2016, the Uppingham in Rutland Lodge (9119) presented a cheque for £925 to the Leicester Hospitals Charity to be spent on treating Children with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic progressive disease causing inflammation in the joints resulting in painful deformity and immobility, especially in the fingers, wrists, feet, and ankles. The Master, W Bro. Chris Cockerill said: “Those who have had contact with someone who has this painful disease understand the impact it has on them. However, to have this as a child brings further challenges and one that I wished to contribute towards in order to help them. We think this disease is something we may get when older and forget that people can get Rheumatoid Arthritis at any age.” The cheque was received at a presentation by the Master to Kamlesh Mistry of the Leicester Hospitals Charity who thanked the members of the Lodge for their fantastic support in raising the money which will go towards helping children with the condition.

Heard the one about every property buyer in the UK paying exactly77 the co77rrect a7mount of S7DLT on77 their p7urchases? No, neither have we. Your tax liability isn’t a joke. But conservative estimates indicate that at least 50% of buyers of residential and commercial property in the UK have those purchases assessed incorrectly for SDLT. Reliance by buyers on their solicitors, combined with a lack of awareness of the full complexities and continuous updates of the relevant legislation by those solicitors, mean that HMRC has been in receipt of millions of pounds in overpaid liabilities. Happily, there is a punchline that you’ll like. If you have bought property in the last three years, Cornerstone can analyse the details of your transaction and, where appropriate, write to HMRC on your behalf correcting any errors made and requesting a refund of your overpaid SDLT. There’s no upfront fee, no fee if the claim is unsuccessful, and nothing for you to do beyond supplying those initial details and then waiting for your cheque in the post. Light Blues visit Cyprus In April 2016, two Leicestershire and Rutland Light Blue Club members, Bros. Dominic Rapsey and Baz Keshwala, both of Highcross Lodge (4835), took a trip to Cyprus to soak up some Mediterranean sunshine and some Freemasonry. During the trip, their host Bro. Karl Coles, from Edward Sherrier Lodge (6757) which meets in Lutterworth but who now lives in Cyprus, had arranged visits to three quite different English Constitution (District Grand Lodge of Cyprus) Lodges on the Island. The first visit was to Lakeside Lodge (9869) meeting in Paralimni, which was consecrated in 2012, and comprises mainly of members from the Islands expat community. They witnessed an excellent initiation ceremony followed by the annual St. Georges Day Festive Board, which included parading the Beef for the Master to sample which was led by Bro. Karl Coles who represented a Knight of St George. Bro. Dominic Rapsey said: "It was a fantastic evening, and very well attended by a lot of Lodge members and Visitors, with a large party from Buckinghamshire including their Provincial Grand Master and Deputy Provincial Grand Master." The Second visit was to Lusignan Lodge (7453) meeting in Nicosia for a Raising ceremony. The Lodge was consecrated in 1956 and named after the House of Lusignan which ruled Cyprus in the 12th Century. Lusignan Lodge members are mainly Greek Cypriot and after the ceremony the Brethren enjoyed a Festive Board of squid, octopus and other traditional Cypriot food. It was another great evening where the visiting Brethren were made very welcome. The final visit was to Lord Kitchener Lodge (3402), a Military Lodge meeting at the Dhekelia Garrison near Larnaca which was originally consecrated in Egypt before transferring to Cyprus in 1955. They saw a Passing ceremony delivered with military precision and after an enjoyable festive board in one of the billets. It was a fantastic trip for the Brethren and no doubt they will return again with hopefuly more Light Blue Club members.

MARI SKY DIVE Mari Street, the widow of Bro. Leslie J. Street who was a member of Wayfarer Lodge (8679) meeting in Coalville, jumped out of a plane at 13,000 feet for a skydive in order to raise funds for the British Lung Foundation. Mari recalls: "In 2008, Les developed an annoying cough so we went to the doctor. At first, we thought it was just a chest infection. But then in March 2009 a diagnosis of Pulmonary Fibrosis was given. In just 8 months he died. Les was everything to me. Losing him was so hard. Pulmonary fibrosis is such an insidious, shockingly cruel condition. That’s why I decided to start fundraising. If the money can go to research which can help other people, then it’s worthwhile." On what would have been Les's 70th Birthday and 7 years after he died, Mari, who is 68, set out to raise money for research in his memory by skydiving. Members of the Wayfarer Lodge, including Les' son W Bro. Mark Street, got together and supported Mari with a donation of £250. After the skydive, Mari said: "There was never a point where I felt afraid. It was just beautiful, and incredibly exhilarating. We free-fell for 45 seconds, then suddenly

I heard a flapping sound and my parachute went out and everything went so quiet. We just drifted down. It was amazing, honestly." W Bro. Mark said: "I proposed my Dad into Freemasonry in 2004 and he progressed through the Offices in the Lodge and was Junior Warden at the time of his untimely death. To me, my Dad epitomised what Freemasonry is all about as he always had time for anyone, gave what he could, in terms of time and money, to support worthy causes, was totally dependable and reliable and committed absolutely to the Offices that he held." Mari concluded: "People ask me what I think Les would have said. I think he would have told me I was bloody mad! But proud of me, like he always was. He was such an incredibly funny, lovely man. This condition has no respect for anything or anyone. It was so awful to watch him struggle so much. I know that the money I've raised can help other people, and it makes it all so worthwhile."

HALFORD visit A total of 12 members of Halford Lodge (3919), which meets at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester, travelled to the south coast to visit Dunckerley Lodge (3878) in Poole, Dorset on 18th April 2016. W Bro. Colin Chambers, who is still a member of Halford Lodge, moved to Poole some years ago and invited the members of Halford Lodge to attend a Raising Ceremony at Dunckerley Lodge, of which he is also a member. A very special part of the ceremony was the Walking Charge delivered at the end of the ceremony which was very well delivered by W Bro. Viv Double of Ashley Lodge (6525). None of the visitors from Leicester had seen it before and therefore made the evening very interesting.

The Festive Board was full of fun and friendship which the visiting Brethren thoroughly enjoyed. The Halford Lodge are now looking forward to entertaining members of Dunckerley Lodge in Leicester in the near future and hope to have reciprocal visits as a regular feature in their Masonic calendar.

LODGE NEWS

Humberstone Lodge and the Scottish CoNNection Early in 2016 Humber Stone Lodge (7744) successfully interviewed Mr Christopher Freeman as a prospective Candidate for Initiation. During the interview it emerged that his Father-In -Law Robert Forsyth, was a Freemason in Scotland, but has resided in Leicestershire for many years. This sparked thoughts with the interview team that there may be a possibility of having a special guest at the impending Initiation Ceremony in April 2016. W Bro. Ian Nesbitt contacted UGLE who subsequently made enquiries with the Grand Lodge of Scotland who in turn confirmed the said Brother had been Initiated, Passed and Raised in the Lodge of St. John (20) meetings at Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, in 1962 becoming a Life Member in 1963. He could therefore openly visit English Lodges. Incidentally his Initiation fee was just £8. 10s.0.

Left to right: Bro. Robert Forsyth & W Bro. Donald Miller

Further arrangements were put in place without telling anyone just in case W Bro. Donald was unable to travel. During the interim period it came to light that Bro. Robert Forsyth was overdue his 50 year Diploma as a Life Member and permission was sought to have the presentation undertaken after the Initiation ceremony. W Bro. Ian Nesbitt and W Bro. Donald Miller met the evening before the meeting to arrange all the Lodge proceedings and hatched the scurrilous plan. On the evening of the meeting W Bro. Ian Nesbitt collected W Bro. Donald from his hotel and duly drove him to Syston Masonic Hall where on entering the building he met Bro. Robert and there followed an interaction of bewilderment as Bro. Robert realised he knew W Bro. Donald all those years ago. W Bro.

Donald had even brought regalia from the Lodge of St John (20) with him for Bro. Robert to wear that evening. The Sash is inscribed with the Lodge Name & Number, with Aprons underneath Jackets as per Scottish Constitution Past Master W Bro. Robert McVey took the Chair for the Initiation of Mr Christopher Freeman, after which he “Called-Off” for the presentation of a 50 Year Scottish Constitution Diploma to Bro. Robert Forsyth by W Bro. Donald Miller, after which the Lodge was “Called-On”. He then handed the Chair back to Worshipful Master Stephen Conway. Since then Bro. Robert has accompanied his son-in-law Bro. Christopher to the Initiates evening at Freemasons’ Hall, London Road and both had a thoroughly enjoyable evening including a short chat with the PGM RW Bro. David Hagger.

So arrangements were put in place for Bro. Robert Forsyth to be present at the Initiation of his son-in Law Chris. However there was more to follow as W Bro. Donald Miller, HonGSD, ProvGJW of Lanarkshire Upper Ward who provided all the information to UGLE, contacted W Bro. Ian Nesbitt and enquired as to the date of the proposed Initiation Ceremony as he would like to attend, being a member of the Lodge of St John (20) and having not seen Bro. Robert for many years.

LODGE NEWS

John of Gaunt supporting those with Cancer Bro. Paul Coleman of the John of Gaunt Lodge (523), which meets in Leicester, is supporting those with cancer this summer by having all of his hair shaved off in order to stand proud alongside those men, women and children with cancer. Cancer can turn lives of those suffering with the disease upside down and that’s especially true when it comes to appearance. People with cancer go through hair loss and changes to their appearance that can affect everything from the way they look to how they feel. Macmillan Cancer Support’s ‘Brave the Shave’ continues to ensure that they can be there for people with cancer and their families. Bro. Paul said; “I am doing this event in memory of my Nan, Margaret Lloyd, who sadly passed away with cervical cancer and my partner’s mum, Virginia Marriot, who is currently going through treatment for breast cancer. I think this is a good way to show my support.” Paul will be growing his hair until the 31st August 2016 when he will be shaving it all off. The money raised will mean Macmillan Cancer Support can help people who are facing a difficult time so that they can start to feel more in control.

LODGE NEWS

W Bro. Walter Greenwood

Honoured W Bro. Walter Greenwood, a Past Master of Commercial Lodge (1391) which meets in Leicester, has recently received the Legion d’Honneur Medal presented by the French Government for his contribution to the liberation of France during the Second World War. The Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur is the highest French Order for military merit, established in 1802 by Napoléon Bonaparte. Bro. Wally joined the RAF in 1943 at 18 years old and chose to train as an Air Gunner in preference to either a Flight Engineer or Wireless Operator. His initial training was based on Wellington and Sterling Bombers before converting to Lancaster Bombers and was duly assigned to 106 (Bomber) Squadron based at Metheringham, Lincolnshire. Wally recalls: “On arrival at the Squadron we were all put in an aircraft hangar and instructed to sort ourselves into crews over a

three day period. It was naturally essential that the individuals in a crew got on with each other and I agreed to join a crew after meeting some fellow recruits in a pub.” He began operations soon after and was very actively involved in supporting the D-Day landings. The instructions were to drop the bombs and then fly into France before turning for home, thus avoiding aircraft on following missions. Wally said: “I clearly remember spotting and being attacked by Fokker Wolfs at which point I, in no uncertain terms, told my pilot to fly into the clouds and make a quick turn to escape."

albeit suffering with two fractured hips. Sadly, the rest of the crew did not survive.

In total, Wally completed a total of 34 operations with several entries in his log book detailing when they were hit by flak (anti-aircraft shell fire). The 106 Squadron lost a total of 59 Lancaster bombers by the end of the war with the loss of over 1,000 airmen.

He was invalided from the RAF as a Flight Sergeant in 1944 and completed his civilian life as a plumber. W Bro. Wally was initiated into Freemasonry in 1962 and was Worshipful Master of Commercial Lodge in 1978. He was promoted to PPJGW in 2004. He was Exalted into Royal Arch in the Granite Chapter (2028) and was MEZ in 1986.

Wally subsequently transferred to training and it was during one of the training sessions when the Wellington bomber he was flying failed to take off correctly. Wally’s quick reactions enabled him to jump out and roll off the wing to safety

Wally’s survival during the war was, as he puts it, “down to having a good pilot” but he thoroughly deserves his appointment to Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur having risked his life to secure France’s liberation during the Second World War.

Melton MowbrAy DONATIONS W Bros. Martin Oliver and Mike Rowe from the St Mary's Lodge (7164) presented three local charities with £250 each which has been generously donated by its members. Representatives from Motor Neurone Disease in Leicestershire and Rutland, Parkinson's Disease Melton Mowbray Support Group, and the Melton & Rutland Branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society each received the award at a presentation ceremony at Freemasons' Hall, Wicklow Lodge, Melton Mowbray on Saturday 30th July 2016. Martin Oliver said: "Some of our members have been affected by the illnesses supported by these wonderful charities and we're delighted to be able to offer these donations to help the local community."

INDEX OF PApers SKITTLES

The Lodge of Research (2429), which meets in Leicester, has for the first time published online a full index of the papers included in their annual transactions covering from 1892 up to the present on their new website: www.research2429.org.uk This index has been compiled by the Editor of the Transactions W Bro. David Sharpe and show a wealth of historical masonic research both of a local, national and international interest. The Lodge of Research was consecrated in 1892 and over the years it has become well known over the whole world for its pioneering work in the field of Masonic history. The first Transactions, published in 1893, included papers on 'The Pompeii Mosaic' by W.H. Staynes, 'Extinct Leicestershire Lodges' by John T. Thorp, the internationally renowned literary and historical Masonic scholar, and 'Form and extent of a Freemasons Lodge' by Frederick W. Billson. More contemporary papers in the latest issue from 2015 include the 'The Leicester Table' by Maxine Gilhuys Notarbartolo, 'The Holmes Temple Organ: It's Extensive History' by Carl Heslop and 'The 9th Earl Ferrers: a Provincial Grand Master we might have had?' by David Hughes. Copies of the papers listed in the index are available from the Editor of Transactions and it is hoped that publishing the full index will allow the research conducted and presented in the papers to gain a wider exposure.

Guthalxton Lodge (7717) held a beer and skittles evening at the Rose & Crown in Thurnby Leicester on 21st May 2016. With over 60 members, friends and family in attendance, the evening turned out to be a great success with much fun and games The proceeds of the evening, which included a raffle and quiz, raised a handsome amount of £480, which was equally divided between the Master’s chosen charities of PROSTaid and Kidney Research. The summer does not signal the end of Guthlaxton Lodge’s social functions as they have a curry evening planned for mid-summer and a Sunday Lunch in September. The thriving social scene of Guthlaxton Lodge has proved a great opportunity for introducing potential candidates to the Lodge with two prospective candidates being present at the skittles evening. Bro. Carl Ackers said: "Our social events allow the newer Brethren to form friendships outside the Lodge, which makes the relationships and team ethos within the Lodge much stronger. This in turn builds a greater team harmony for all Brethren in progressive office. The functions also allow the wives and partners to all socialise on a number of occasions a year, which is considered as essential in helping to ensure that all members of Guthlaxton Lodge have the support and understanding from their wives and partners to allow them to enjoy their Freemasonry as much as possible."

Museum & Library

Library and Museum update I am very happy to report that W Bros. Derek Andrews and Mike England have joined the team and have made outstanding progress in developing a searchable database of all the items. To this end they have labelled all the cabinets and shelves in every room of the building and then ascribed a position to every item and added a picture to the database. This has built on the good work that W Bro. David Saunt started some years ago and I would like to thank him for all his support over several years. He has now decided that he cannot devote the time to the Library and Museum and reluctantly we have had to wave him farewell, but I am sure he will be retaining his interest. The new searchable catalogue that has been described above has already shown its worth in that a display was recently put together to accompany a special meeting of the Ancient and Accepted Rite at Leicester. We were not only able to find the objects easily but also W Bro. Derek was able to produce a special catalogue of the items that visitors could refer to. We were able to find several old certificates and aprons to add to the interesting jewels that were already on display and this was augmented by several items loaned by the members of the Order.

We now need to build on this solid foundation and start to add descriptions to each item on the catalogue. It makes a visit to the Museum much more interesting when you have some informative words for the item you are looking at. I would like to extend an invitation to any Brother in the Province to offer their assistance to us in the Library and Museum. There are many ways in which we could best use your talents and interest. •

We need help in sorting our books onto new shelves and to archive some important records. This need not be a long term commitment but could be done as a limited exercise which would produce great benefits.

•

We would also be very grateful if one or more Brethren could help by acting as an Assistant Librarian and being able to attend one morning a week.

I can assure you that there is a treasure trove of material for you to become involved in and to learn from the accumulated wisdom of W Bro. Danny McKeown and his team of Librarians and Curators. If you wish to discuss any of the above opportunities, please contact me c/o Freemasons’ Hall, 80 London Road, Leicester or email me on donapeacock@aol.com.

regalia and memorabilia returned On 17th May 2016, the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. David Hagger received, on behalf of the Province, a magnificent collection of Masonic jewels, regalia and documentary material from the surviving children, Dr Anthony Howe and Mrs Elieen Mann, of W Bro. Harry Billson Howe who was part of the vibrant textiles business in Leicester. Dr Howe discovered the hoard in a case at his home in Poole, Dorset and contacted the Lodge of Gratitude (5614) via its website. W Bro. Richard Brocklehurst of the Lodge subsequently arranged a meeting, with representatives from several Lodges and Chapters, at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester so that the collection could be returned. W Bro. Harry Howe was initiated into the Commercial Lodge (1391) in 1919 and became the first Junior Warden of the newly consecrated Holmes Lodge (4654) in 1924, becoming its third Master in succession to his friends and business colleagues from Leicester`s industrial core industries, W Bro. George Hunt and RW Bro. Sir John Corah. W Bro. Howe was a Lewis and his father also had a distinguished Masonic and business career, and has a memorial window in the St Katherine`s Chapel at Leicester Cathedral.

W.Bro. Howe was a keen supporter of the Leicester Union Lodge of Instruction and it was through that body that the Lodge of Gratitude came to be formed as a token of thanks from the Union Lodge`s Preceptors for the fellowship they had enjoyed. W.Bro. Howe’s regalia, which was generously and thoughtfully returned by the Howe family, include collars and jewels for various Grand Rank appointments, and also a number of highly valuable and precious jewels in connection with his appointment in Holmes Lodge and the Lodge of Gratitude. In addition to the regalia and jewels, W Bro. Howe`s papers include a considerable number of fascinating items giving insights into the life of Freemasonry between 1919 and 1960. However, it was not just masonic material which was received. There was a wealth of matter relating to the Howe family business which was situated in Curzon Street and Birstall Street and which ultimately became part of the Curzonia Group. This will be invaluable in the staging of exhibitions to demonstrate the links between Freemasonry and Leicester`s industrial heritage. In addition, material relating to his service in the Great War was also received when he was involved in espionage behind the German lines as an agent for what is now known as MI6.

LODGE ARCH NEWS MATTERS ROYAL

Provincial Grand Chapter The Annual Convocation of the Provincial Grand Chapter of Leicestershire and Rutland was held at London Road, Leicester, on Thursday 24th March 2016, under the guidance of The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, E Comp. Peter C. Kinder with a record 268 Companions attending the meeting and over 200 dining afterwards. The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, then welcomed the many visitors from surrounding Provinces and took great pleasure in extending the patent of E Comp. Noel Manby as his Deputy. He then appointed, invested and installed E.Comp. Paul Wallace as Second Provincial Grand Principal and E.Comp. John Peberdy as Third Provincial Grand Principal. In doing so, he paid tribute to the work done by E.Comp. Richard Jelly and E Comp. The Revd Michael Wilson, while serving as Second and Third Provincial Grand Principals during the previous year.

The Grand Superintendent was particularly pleased to confirm that E Comps. Robert Hutchinson, David Turner and The Revd Michael Wilson were to receive appointments to Past Grand Rank in Supreme Grand Chapter at the investiture meeting in April - and that E Comp. Richard Jelly was to receive a promotion. The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent gave a brief update on the latest initiatives promulgated by the Royal Arch Executive and recent social events.

De Mowbray Jewel

This Jewel, was first presented to E Comp. William E. Boulter on the 1st May 1959 and was re-presented to E Comp. Donald Mowbray, on 6th May 2016, after he had installed his successor, E Comp. David Kibert as First Principal. The presentation was made by E Comp. John Townsend who had discovered the Jewel in the Masonic collection of the late E Comp. Kenneth Kilbourn and who took great pleasure in returning it to the Chapter. This Jewel is of particular interest as it bears the Chapter No 1130. The Chapter was the third Chapter to be formed in the Province in 1869, the founders coming almost entirely from the Chapter of Fortitude (279) (Consecrated in 1796) and was originally attached to the Rutland Lodge (1130), meeting in Melton Mowbray. It was named after the De Mowbray family, who were Lords of the Manor of Melton Mowbray for nearly 400 years. However, the Chapter was moved to Leicester by dispensation in 1900, but it was not until 1970 that it was renumbered as (523), being attached to the John of Gaunt Lodge.

RA Tracing Boards

of Leicestershire and Rutland”, for the use by All Chapters at London Road, the other “Royal Arch Chapters – Syston”.

Although they were in existence many years ago the first I became aware of them was mid2015, when Somerset Provincial Grand Chapter encouraged its individual Chapters (one of which I am a Founder) to purchase one each as part of the 250th Anniversary of the Royal Arch in Somerset.

The Tracing Board at Syston was the first I unveiled at the Provincial Team visit to Reynard Chapter (9285) in February 2016. The other I presented to the Grand Superintendent at L&R Chapter of Installed First Principals (7896) at London Road in March 2016 and the following evening at the Chapter of Welcome (5664). They were very well received and after making further enquiries I was able to acquire a Tracing Board for every Provincial Building in Leicestershire and Rutland where Chapter Meetings are held with each Tracing Board being inscribed accordingly.

As a consequence I wrote to our Grand Superintendent E Comp. Peter Kinder for his views. Following a meeting of the Royal Arch Executive it was agreed that I could progress their acquisition for Leicestershire and Rutland. However due to timescales in Somerset I was only able to buy 2 of them. One was inscribed “Royal Arch Province

Province in time for the 2016 –2017 Masonic Season. An accompanying Lecture has now been included in the “File” of Royal Arch Lectures, being readily available from the Chapter Office for any Chapter who requests.

The Tracing Boards have now been distributed across the

Supreme Grand Chapter April 2016 The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, E Comp. Peter Kinder, was accompanied by 30 Leics & Rutland Companions from Leicestershire & Rutland for the April meeting of Supreme Grand Chapter. The Pro First Grand Principal then invested those promoted. Included our own E Comp. Richard Jelly promoted to PAGSoj, E Comps. David Turner and The Revd Canon Michael Wilson being appointed to the rank of PGStB, and E Comp. Robert Hutchinson to the rank of PAGDC. Proceedings finished by 1.00 pm and those dining transferred to the Grand Connaught Rooms, where the Companions obviously enjoyed themselves. All agreed it was an excellent day out - and the Grand Superintendent looks forward to more Companions joining the party on future occasions - the meetings are open to all Companions. Royal Arch Buffet June 2016 On Tuesday 21st June 2016 at Freemasons' Hall Leicester, the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, E Comp. Peter Kinder and his wife Sandie, hosted the annual buffet supper for the recently appointed active Provincial Grand Chapter Officers and their ladies. This was an excellent opportunity for the new team, appointed in March, to meet in a very relaxed and convivial atmosphere. Peter and Sandie, supported by Noel and Jackie Manby, Paul Wallace and John Peberdy, accompanied by their ladies, welcomed over 70 participants, including a number of Grand Officers and Past Provincial Grand Principals and their ladies – invitations are customarily sent to all Grand Officers and Past Provincial Grand Principals for this informal evening, together with those Companions who help out with the administrative arrangement on the day of the Provincial Grand Chapter

meeting in March.

was presented with a bouquet.

After reception drinks and a delightful sit-down buffet, Philip and Judy Dodd’s Tudor Choir provided a varied programme of musical entertainment, but without one of Philip’s humorous monologues – which he has delivered to everyone’s amusement on previous occasions. As a gesture of thanks to the Choir, the Grand Superintendent presented a cheque for £300 to Philip and Judy for LOROS, their chosen charity, and Judy

In his closing remarks Peter Kinder had two little surprises – he presented two celebratory cards, which Roger Moseley had covertly managed to get everyone to sign during the Reception. One was for Stephen Finnigan and his wife, Kathleen, who were celebrating their 41st Wedding Anniversary - the second was for John Townsend, who was celebrating his 77th birthday.

Attention to all Craft Master Masons and Royal Arch new Exaltees… A Master Masons and new Exaltees evening will be again held at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester on Tuesday 29th November 2016 when a short separate presentation will be given to each group on aspects of the Craft and Royal Arch Masonry and the close relationship between the two. The 2 groups will then join together for a short briefing and share a complimentary buffet. All potential attendees will be written to with an invitation but if you do not receive one, please make contact with the Chapter Office at London Road chapter@pglleics.co.uk

Rose Croix

Demonstration

Over 200 members of the Order of the Ancient and Accepted Rite (Rose Croix), including over 50 from Leicestershire & Rutland, attended a Demonstration Festival at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester on Saturday 4th June 2016. Visitors came from far and wide (Scotland, Northumberland, Lancs, Yorks, Staffs, Notts, Derbys, Lincs, Norfolk, Northants, Kent, Hampshire and included 2 members of the Supreme Council).

gave thanks to all those who had taken part in or had contributed to making the day such a success. Leicester has been approached to host another Festival in 2019!! (a rare honour indeed)

(Picture shows the King Edward VII Demonstration Team together with the Leics & Rutland Inspector General)

At this demonstration, 2 of the 14 Intermediate Degrees of the Order were demonstrated by the King Edward VII Chapter of Improvement Demonstration Team. These degrees are only ever demonstrated 3 or 4 times per year. Each following year, another degree is demonstrated with each degree having its own different regalia and setting. Regular Rose Croix Chapters are only ever empowered to deliver the ceremony of the 18th degree and all the other degrees up to the 18th degree are conferred by name only. The Demonstration Team consisted of 11 members who arrived the previous day to set up the furniture and have full rehearsals. The complexity and detail of the ceremonies was well appreciated by all those that attended to witness the ceremonies. A light lunch was provided after the Demonstration for over 160, when the Supreme Council Grand Marshal gave a warm response to the Toast proposed. The Inspector General, V. Ill. Bro.
