Welcome Dear Readers

Yet again we have a full packed issue of stories of a wide range of interests and with thanks to all those who have sent in their individual stories and photos.

We have tried to include all stories sent in but we do have the limitations of space to make the newsletter economically cost effective so therefore we have not been able to publish everything. If your story is missing please do resubmit for inclusion in issue 35.

We have changed the team to try and bring a different dimension to our approach and Tony Molyneux and Richard Jelly have agreed to stand down in order for them to concentrate their efforts on their new Provincial Craft or Chapter responsibilities. We are delighted to welcome Ian Nesbitt and Freddie Harris onto the team and very much look forward to their new inputs.

If you have any ideas on how we can improve the style, format or content please let us know and I promise you that the team will look at your suggestion.

All the stories published are generally available on the Provincial website, with more photos available ...so please do have a look if you want to see more on these stories. Happy reading!

We are delighted to welcome the following as Freemasons and in particular to our Province and wish them many happy and enjoyable years as members of our Fraternity

Bro. Bartosz Janik ( 4874)

No doubt these efforts by W Bro. Fred Harris over the summer will not only prolong the life of the building but vastly increase the appearance of Freemasons' Hall doing justice to the magnificent Grade II listed Georgian building that many Leicestershire and Rutland Masons call home.

W Bro. Fred Harris and his son Bro. Freddie Harris, both of Beacon Lodge (5208), along with a small team, began the four week process in midJune 2015 and is focused on a complete redecoration including repairs to joinery and preparation of external surfaces prior to the complete repainting of the facade.

Although the majority of the Masonic meetings have now finished for the summer, the Provincial Grand Superintendent of Works is literally living up to his position by leading the redecoration of the Headquarters of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Leicestershire and Rutland on London Road, Leicester.

Bro. Joshua Symonds (5208)

A buffet was then provided in the Oliver Dining Room which gave an opportunity for the newer members to meet with the senior members of the Province. The Provincial Grand Master was pleased to welcome so many new Brethren in what was a most enjoyable evening.

NEW MEMBERS RECEPTION

The Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. David Hagger, hosted an annual reception on Monday 11th May 2015 at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester to welcome new members to the Fraternity. Over 120 new members and their partners attended and a number of short talks were given on the history of the Holmes Lodge Room, Charitable aspects of the Order, and Freemasonry in general.

ANOTHER BOWLING SUCCESS

Although the L&R Masonic Bowling Association was sadly wound up last year, 8 L&R bowlers accepted invitations to play in this year's MACE Trophy... the Masonic Annual Charity Event held at Rushden, Northants on 7th August 2015 which attracted bowlers from 17 Provinces across the country.

I am happy to report that one of our rinks won the Trophy, which was presented by R W Bro. Max Bayes, PGM of Northants & Hunts and W Bro. David Jones, President of N&H MBA.

ÂŁ2000 was raised and presented to The Cynthia Spencer Hospice, Northampton.

The photograph shows our winning rink, W Bros. Trevor Loydall, Bill Roberts, Chris Garratt and Terry Freer with the host PGM and President.

As I said in the last issue,we still have a small number of regular bowlers, although fewer younger ones are coming through and the positions of Captain, Secretary and Treasurer proved impossible to fill. However, I once again remind you of our playing potential and if anyone is interested in playing and filling one of those important positions, please do contact me on 0116 2596448.

Even now I do not see restoring the Association as an impossible task. The playing occasions are most enjoyable and have raised a great deal of money for charity.

Meanwhile I send you all, my very best wishes for the forthcoming masonic season.

W Bro. Jim Williamson, Past President L&R MBA.

2017

Tercentenary of UGLE

In 2017, Freemasons will be celebrating 300 years of organised Freemasonry. This anniversary marks the Tercentenary of the formation of the first Grand Lodge of Freemasons in the world. On 24th June 1717 four London Lodges, which had existed for some time, came together at the Goose and Gridiron Tavern in St Paul’s Churchyard and declared themselves a Grand Lodge and elected Anthony Sayer as their Grand Master. This Grand Lodge ultimately became the United Grand Lodge of England in 1813 when it joined together with a rival Grand Lodge which was set up in 1751. The Pro Grand Master explains the importance of celebrating 300 years of Grand Lodge - “Celebrating 300 years is a once in a lifetime event for us all, as is appropriately marking this wonderful achievement and, of course, being the first Grand Lodge to do so. We are proud to be Freemasons and 2017 is a great opportunity to show that pride not only to our families and friends, but to the non-masonic community as well. To this end it will also be the natural culmination of the open public relations strategy we have embraced.” A National event will be held to celebrate the Tercentenary of Grand Lodge at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Tuesday 31st October 2017 followed by a dinner in Battersea Park. This celebration also coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Investiture of the Grand Master. As capacity at the Royal Albert Hall is limited there will be a live transmission of the event via internet streaming for all Masonic centres which will include Freemasons' Hall, Leicester at the very least. The Province of Leicestershire and Rutland will be holding events during 2017 to celebrate the Tercentenary of Grand Lodge alongside events held by the United Grand Lodge of England.

8 | Leicester Square | Autumn 2015

UGLE has also asked each Province to organise and hold events during 2017 to celebrate the Tercentenary. The Provincial Grand Master has asked W Bro. Andy Green to oversee the preparations for our own celebrations for this very important event in the Province. The 2017 Tercentenary celebrations in the Province will also assist in raising funds for the 2022 Charity Festival which will be officially launched in the near future. A 2017 Tercentenary Committee has therefore been formed to assist in these preparations and includes: RW Bro. David Hagger, VW Bro. Peter Kinder, W Bros. Andy Green, Henry Kukiewicz, Mark Pierpoint, Malcolm Talbot, Carl Bond, Peter Gibson-Leitch, Bruce White, Phillip Mann, Noel Manby, Dale Page, Tony Sibson and Bro. Freddie Harris. These members will represent all Masonic Centres in our Province so that they can be engaged in formulating, organising, co-ordinating and participating in planned events.

A letter was sent out to all Brethren in March 2015 inviting them to submit suggestions for events and celebrations to be held in 2017 for consideration by the Committee. W Bro. Andy Green would like to thank all those who submitted their ideas where over 50 were discussed by the Committee and a shortlist agreed. The Committee and Brethren at each Centre are currently working on producing a final event list.

LOUGHBOROUGH OPENS ITS DOORS

Freemasons in Loughborough opened the doors to the Masonic Hall for the first time on Thursday 8th July 2015 to welcome over 30 young men who were keen to find out more about the ancient fraternity. Brethren in every lodge in the Province were invited to bring along non-masonic guests whom they felt would perhaps enjoy membership of our organisation.

The guests were invited into the Lodge Room to listen to several short talks by senior Freemasons. After an introduction by W Bro. Philip Dodd, W Bros. Brian Golland and Mark Taylor explained what Freemasonry is all about and some of the symbolism of Freemasonry including the layout of the Lodge room as well as the governance of the order and its origins. W Bro. Phillip Dodd concluded by briefly talking about our charitable work. The Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. David Hagger, Deputy Provincial Grand Master, VW Bro. Jim Buckle and the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, VW Bro. Peter Kinder, were also present supporting this annual Provincial Open Evening which for the first time was held outside of Leicester. After the presentation, there was a finger buffet in the dining room to encourage questions on a one to one basis to the significant number of senior masons who were available to provide answers.

Over the past few years Leicestershire and Rutland Freemasons, who are generally perceived by the public as a private society for the older man, have embraced the internet and social media, including Twitter and Facebook. This is aimed at reaching out to a younger generation and dispel the myths surrounding the world's oldest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisation. As a result, a sharp increase in membership enquiries from those less than 50 years old have been received.

RW Bro. David Hagger, Provincial Grand Master said “We are keen to shake off our bygone image and are delighted to welcome so many younger men keen to find out more about us. We are finding that more young people from 18 years old and upwards are attracted to Freemasonry as they seek a social environment with strong values and traditions that also supports the local community in charitable giving."

In 2017, Freemasons will be celebrating their 300th anniversary and Leicestershire and Rutland Freemasons will be looking to open the doors of their Masonic Halls, including their headquarters on London Road in Leicester, across the counties to enable the local community to view inside and to lift the lid of this once perceived mysterious society.

PROVINCIAL NEWS

CAR RUN Once again the cars assembled on the forecourt of the R.M.B.I. Care Home at Oadby where some of the residents (Reg Atkins, Harry Williams and member of staff Faye) came out to enjoy the collection of Classic cars. There were some great examples of British car manufacturing, such as the Lanchester (pictured in the background), the Triumph Stag, and the M.G. Midget. There were some more modern classics such as the Lamborghini. Michael Robinson, and Michael Muncaster despite the rain joined the run on their Bikes. The cars set off for Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome where Brethren, together with their ladies and guests were able to gain entry to see a great display of Cold War aircraft. Entry was by courtesy of the Management of Bruntingthorpe Airfield, and organised by Mark Pierpoint. After having spent a very interesting time at the Airfield the run continued onto the Grey Goose at Gilmorton where all enjoyed an excellent repast. Michael A Robinson( Harley Davidson)

PGM PASSES Lutterworth Freemason The Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. David Hagger, was kindly offered and willingly accepted the gavel at the meeting of Wiclif Lodge (3078), which meets at Lutterworth Masonic Hall, in order to Pass Bro. William A Robinson to the degree of a Fellowcraft. Those present at the meeting held on Wednesday 8th April 2015, accompanied by his Provincial Officers, witnessed a truly wonderful and unique ceremony with the Provincial Grand Master not only Passing Bro. William but also delivering the Second Degree tracing board. Bro. William has his own part in the history of Wiclif Lodge and the Province being Initiated into the fraternity at the age of 19 by special dispensation of the Provincial Grand Master. Bro. William has a long standing family connection with Freemasonry with many of his family being members of the Craft. His Great Grandfather and namesake, W Bro. William A Robinson, was Past Master of Wiclif Lodge in 1970. His Grandfather, W Bro. Michael A Robinson is also a Past Master of the Lodge and was in the Chair in 1974. The Lodge Room at Lutterworth was packed to the seams with over 100 in attendance to witness this historic event. After the meeting, the Provincial Grand Master said 'I was thrilled to be asked to Pass Bro. William to the degree of a Fellowcraft who was an excellent Candidate. It was extremely good to see so many young Brethren in the Lodge being involved in a very high standard of ceremonial work.’ He also paid tribute to W Bro. David Milner who stood in as Acting Master and has recently been appointed to Past Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies in recognition of his commitment to Masonry. The PGM continued to thank all of his Provincial Officers for their support in attending the special meeting. After the meeting, at the Festive Board, a donation of £600 was presented to the Provincial Grand Master for the Leicestershire and Rutland Masonic Charity Association.

LODGE NEWS

BEACON LODGE LEWIS

Beacon Lodge (5208), which meets at the Masonic Hall, Loughborough, held an emergency meeting on Friday 29th May 2015 for a very special ceremony where they initiated a ‘Lewis’ on the very day of his 18th Birthday. Whilst the normal age for joining Freemasonry is usually 21 years old, there are special circumstances where those aged 18 years and above can join.

A ‘Lewis’ is the name given to the uninitiated son of a Mason. In stonemasonry, a lewis is an iron cramp that is forced into a cavity of a stone to enable the lifting or lowering of that stone. Although it is not a working tool used in Masonic ritual it can be seen as a symbol of strength, which a son is to his father.

Bro. Joshua Symonds, who is the eldest son of W Bro. Garry Symonds (a Past Master of Beacon Lodge), became what is most probably the youngest Freemason in the country thanks to a dispensation granted by the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. David Hagger.

The ceremony was witnessed by over 70 Brethren including visitors from far and wide including a good contingency of younger Masons from the Leicestershire and Rutland Light Blue Club. The ceremony was first class and a very proud father took the Master’s Chair to Initiate his son and give those attending a memorable and very unforgettable evening.

Beacon Lodge has one of the lowest age profiles in the Province of Leicestershire and Rutland with an average age of just 51. The addition of Bro. Symonds will undoubtably continue the trend in the Lodge for younger men to join the fraternity and enjoy Freemasonry at an early age.

After the meeting, a very enjoyable Festive Board was held after the ceremony where £475 was raised for Leicester Children’s Holiday Centre Mablethorpe who provide free seaside holidays for disadvantaged children in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Flyfishing presentations

W Bro. David Carter of Roundhill Lodge (8639) and W Bro. Keith Harkness (Mark Provincial Grand Treasurer) presented a £1,933 donation to Carl Jones of the British Heart Foundation.

This magnificent amount was raised by Brethren from Leicestershire and Derbyshire attending a Fly Fishing Day at the Eyebrook reservoir, and donations of £250 from the Mark PGMs Discretionary Fund and £500 from Bro. Peter Westerman of Gabriel Newton Lodge (9071) were presented.

The winner of the biggest fish caught on the day went to W Bro. Robert Surman of Edward Sherrier Lodge (6757) with a weighty Trout of 9 lb 15ozs.

Congratulations to W Bro. David Carter and his wife Rose for the organisation of this annual event and to all who gave their support.

MUSEUM NEWS

LIBRARY & MUSEUM U PDAT E It may be me, but the years seem to go by with increasing speed and there is never enough time to complete everything on the check-list. Nonetheless, work has gone on in the Museum due to the unceasing efforts of W Bro. Danny McKeown. Our “prize” for this quarter was a very generous donation from W Bro. Michael Herbert of many items given to him as mementoes during his official visits overseas. W Bro. Michael (his rank in the Craft) has achieved high rank in many orders and is currently Head of the Order of the Knights Beneficent of the Holy City. (For further details see the History of the Province of Leicestershire and Rutland – The Other Orders.) W Bro. Michael has consecrated or assisted in the consecration of a great number of Lodges, Chapters, Councils etc in Europe, India, the Far East, South America and other areas of the world. Many of the items given to him are reminders of the specific culture of the area in which the new Masonic unit has its home. W Bro. Danny is, as I write this article, placing the items in a display area of the Museum so that all may be able to have a look at them. You will be able to see examples of items from the Mark, Royal Ark Mariners, Red Cross of Constantine, Royal and Select Master, Allied Masonic Degrees.

Don Peacock

There is still a lot to be done in restructuring the storage of books and we have just received a set of Transactions from the Quatuor Coronati Lodge to add to our challenge. We are looking for volunteers to help the team in the Library and Museum. If you can help for a morning a week or once a fortnight, please contact W Bro. Danny or myself care of Library and Museum e-mail library@pglleics.org.uk

TWO NEW ARRIVALS Maxine Gilhuys Notarbartolo, who spoke at the March meeting of the Lodge of Research(2429) on her investigations into the background and origins of the Masonic Marble Table which graces the Museum at London Road, has kindly sent two publications for the Library. One is an Italian version of her paper and is entitled "Il Tavolo di Leicester." This is printed in a journal devoted to Masonic Research under the title "Officinae" Volume 27, 2015, no.1/2. The journal is most lavishly printed and beautifully illustrated and it is published by the Centro Sociologico Italiano in Florence. The drawback is that the journal is in Italian, though with a little bit of schoolboy French and Latin it is possible to gain some sense of the content of the very erudite articles it contains. The second volume is a guide to the Palazzo Roffia in Florence, a magnificent town house in the Classical style which is currently used for Masonic meetings, and whose rooms have been furnished to a lavish standard with lodge furniture. Once again the book is in Italian but any reader capable of extracting even a small amount of information might be tempted to visit the Palazzo if on holiday in Florence. Just one word of warning, though: remember if you find yourself in Florence that you should have checked in advance that the Palazzo houses Lodges which are regarded as regular by UGLE!"

BURBACH Garden Party

LODGE NEWS

Burbach Lodge in Hinckley held a garden party in the grounds of Bro. Steve Iliffe's Burbage house. The Master of the Lodge W Bro. Chris Blunt expressed his gratitude to Steve, who was only initiated into Freemasonry this year, for the use of his facilities. The gardens provided a lovely backdrop for the event which was enjoyed by around seventy lodge members, their families and friends. Entertainment during the afternoon was provided by Dean Thomas who performed many favourites which were well appreciated by all. Games were provided for the children and a delicious buffet, prepared by Burbach member, Bro. Jonathan Nichols' Homemade Buffet Company went down very well, especially as it was accompanied by liquid refreshments served by the Senior Steward Bro. Nick Sherwin. In addition to being an afternoon enjoyed by all, the event and raffle raised over £1,200 and this sum will, along with other events during his year, be part of the Master's charity fund. This year the charities being supported are the Air Ambulance Service and the Rainbows Children's Hospice. Chris expressed his thanks to all who had attended and given their support for these two worthwhile charities.

BURBACH Youngest Master

At the Installation meeting of the Burbach Lodge (8699) on the 21st April 2015, Bro. Chris Blunt became the youngest ever Master of the Lodge. Bro. Chris was Initiated into Burbach Lodge, which meets at the Masonic Hall in Hinckley, in January 2004 at the age of 29, on a Past Masters night. Chris recalls that W Bro. Allison Gibson-Leitch, the only surviving Founder of the Lodge, acted as Junior Deacon on that occasion. He also admits that, as is often the case, he hadn't realised what a special night he had been treated to.

Chris has spent all of his life in Burbage, is married to Anne-Marie and they have a nine year-old son Joseph. He works as an IT Consultant and his hobbies include “tinkering with technology, movies, cooking up a storm in the kitchen and being outdoors with the family enjoying a cycle ride or walk.

Now at the age of forty, he has achieved the Master’s Chair and is looking forward to a great year at the helm of this Lodge. He is very proud to be a member of Burbach Lodge saying: “We are very lucky to have such a good social scene where many of the Brethren and their families are friends outside of the Lodge and enjoy socialising together.” During this year he has plans to hold a summer garden party, a Sunday lunch, a casino night and of course the social highlight of the year; the Ladies Festival.

Chris aims to make these social events and his Festive Boards, as lighthearted as possible, whilst still of course maintaining a respect of the traditions: "These social events are a great way of mixing with new people and introducing people to Freemasonry and at the same time raising charitable funds." This year the charitable causes he aims to support are the Rainbows Children’s Hospice and the Air Ambulance - "two very worthy charities that thankfully I have never had to call upon."

LODGE NEWS

BACK TO THE FUTURE PARTY On 12th July 2015 Humber Stone Lodge (7744) held its now annual Garden Party at the home of W Bro. Dean Newman and his wife Christine. The event was organised on behalf of the Worshipful Master W Bro. Trevor Delisle-Barrow with W Bro. Alan Coleman involved in much of the arrangements. W Bro. Dean suggested the British Heart Foundation for Children this year. To enable this to be as easy as possible he contacted W Bro. Ian Nesbitt as the Great Nephew of Ian and his wife Carole had died earlier in the year after many heart attacks and suffering at the age of 14 months. Elliott Stevens lived in the ancient harbour town of Watchet in Somerset where W Bro. Ian is a member of the Quantock Lodge and Chapter (4446) He had been treated at Taunton hospital locally, then Bristol Hospital & finally 3 months at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London. Elliott’s death galvanised the local community and a Charity was set up in his memory www.elliotstouch.org to fund research into Cardiomyopathy and Mitochondrial disease, as Elliott had been diagnosed during his short life with both of these conditions. A local press article appertaining to Elliott was published on the front page of the Somerset Free Press: http://www.west-somerset-today.co.uk/news.cfm?id=36877&searchWord=elliot&searchYear=current The Garden Party was a great success with over 40 people in attendance and the total monies raised, after a couple of additional donations following the event, amounted to £403. W Bro. Ian has since written to the PGM of Somerset RW Bro. Stuart Hadler who has given his support to the fund raising and W Bro. Ian is now in contact with The Provincial Grand Charity Steward of Somerset and his own Quantock Lodge for some additional funding to be added to the above.

On a lighter note the Newman & Nesbitt family is expanding locally. Following an article in the Autumn 2011 Edition of the Leicester Square where Will Newman and Sam Nesbitt were pictured after their wedding, having first met at the same venue for a Garden Party in 2007, they were in attendance again this year with their 13 month old Daughter Olivia. So having gone back to where it all began they are now looking to the future. So let’s hope more couples and children can do likewise with support for very worthy causes.

Jewels Reunited A series of Masonic jewels, previously worn by a deceased member, were recently offered for sale on the online auction site eBay including both his Craft and Mark Master Mason Lodges within the Province of Leicestershire and Rutland. The Provincial Communications Officer, Andy Green, successfully bid for jewels presented to Archibald Frank Tailby during his Masonic career in Leicester. These jewels are being repatriated back to their rightful Lodges. Sadly, Masonic regalia is regularly sold on eBay. However Andy Green is automatically notified of items listed for sale pertaining to every Lodge within the Province and will contact the Lodge Secretary. Over the past few years several Lodges have already successfully bid for regalia and other items have been secured for the Provincial Museum at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester

Sporting Wyggeston

The Wyggeston Lodge (3448) which is the Universities Scheme Lodge for Leicester University, and meets at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester had an active summer break from their Lodge meetings with two sporting social events aimed at getting members of the lodge together for a bit of competitive fun.

In May 2015, members of the Lodge, together with partners, family and friends arrived at the indoor circuit at Wymeswold Airfield, Leicestershire, ready and excited to participate in some all action gokarting. The indoor circuit is 400m in length with a raised cross over at one end with a very good lap time of 24 seconds. 30 minutes of racing in groups got underway, most of the drivers being a little cautious at the beginning, before getting into a groove, some definitely faster than others. The final winner was Senior Deacon, Bro. Paul Marvin, with an impressive 24:002 best lap, who celebrated in the usual manner amongst racing champions with some obligatory fizz. In September 2015, the second sporting social event was held at Kibworth Shooting Ground, Leicestershire for a morning of clay shooting. After a short safety brief, an introduction to shooting including stance, gun mounting as well as the allimportant safe handling of the gun was covered by the instructors. It was then straight into shooting 25 clays in four different traps including left to right, right to left and rabbit. Whilst many hadn't shot before, plenty of clays were successfully hit although some faired better than others. After calculating the scores, it was announced that James Marvin, son of Senior Deacon Bro. Paul Marvin, managed to hit the most clays with an impressive 22/25 clays. Lodge Chaplain, W Bro. Simon Oldfield and the son of a forthcoming Initiate, Rob Morris, came joint second with 18/25 clays. The top lady was Sue, wife of Secretary W Bro. Andy Green. All winners were presented with prizes and took their rightful place on the podium. Fairing less successful was the Master of the Lodge, W Bro. Jamie Mollart who ended up with the lowest score out all of those attending managing to hit only 3 clays. Both events were a great deal of fun and the Lodge looks forward to holding other similar events next summer.

Wheelchair for Joshua

An appeal for a new wheelchair for a local boy suffering from cerebral palsy was generously assisted by the Knights of Malta Lodge which meets at the Masonic Hall, Hinckley, Leicestershire.

The Lodge was approached to help fund a powered wheelchair for 7 year old Joshua Beddard who was born prematurely with the debilitating illness and is unable to walk outside his home unassisted. He has relied on a manual wheelchair until now but this doesn't allow him independence as he relies on being pushed by his parents or carers as he can not physically propel himself very far.

The Almoner of the Lodge, W Bro. Roger Edwards, immediately sought help from the Peter Alliss Masters Golfing Society, through his fundraising activities with the British Turkey Federation, who kindly agreed to fund the new electronic wheelchair for Joshua. Since its inception in 1975, the charity has raised over £7 million, through clubs and organisations, to fund hundreds of powered wheelchairs of a type and design that are not provided by the state.

The members of the Knights of Malta Lodge additionally raised funds for the parents to purchase a remote control, which was not funded by the charity, which allows parental control of the wheelchair for safety reasons. The wheelchair and remote control were presented to Joshua by members of Lodge. The Lodge Secretary, W Bro. Bob Kinghorn, said "It's a long time since I have seen such a happy boy.".

Since receiving his wheelchair, the Almoner said "We understand that Joshua is thoroughly enjoying getting around in his new chair and has even raced his brothers around the park on their bikes."

Concert raises £2,000 for Rainbows

An inaugural concert at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester in aid of the Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People was held on Friday 8th May 2015 to celebrate the refurbishment of the 19th Century pipe organ.

The origins of the organ can be traced back to the early years of the 19th Century when it started life as a small chamber instrument built by the famous London craftsman, William Gray. It was utilised by the local organ builders Taylor and Company as the basis of the instrument installed in the old Masonic Hall in Halford Street, Leicester in 1903. This was moved to the present Hall in 1910 and was extended by Taylors in the 1940s. After many years of faithful service the old instrument fell into disrepair and silence until being rescued by a young member, Carl Heslop, who volunteered his services to restore the organ to its former glory.

The concert began with the Rainbows Choir, consisting of staff and volunteers from the Hospice who energetically sang a number of songs including a medley from the Sound of Music.

This was followed by Carl Heslop who played several pieces on the newly refurbished organ including

LODGE NEWS

‘Dance of the Three Old Maids’ and a medley in tribute to the British cinema organist, Sidney Torch.

One of the highlights was most certainly Carl accompanying Buster Keaton’s 1920 short comedy film ‘One Week’ in true cinematic style including his own improvisational flourishes heightening the drama seen on the screen much to the delight of the audience.

David Hughes entertained the audience of 140 with several monologues including ‘Playing the Harmonium’, which was a letter sent from the Revd. FP Harton to Penelope Betjeman sacking her as Baulking Church organist and a modified version of ‘The Father of the Bride’ originally written by Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall for Roy Kinnear.

The Tudor Choir, a 16-strong mixed voice choir based in Leicestershire, also performed several songs from movies and shows including ‘The Circle of Life’ from Disney’s ‘The Lion King’.

The Provincial Grand Master of Leicestershire and Rutland, RW Bro. David Hagger, concluded the evening by presenting a cheque for £2,000 on behalf of the Freemasons and the Tudor Choir to the Chief Executive of Rainbows, Andy Campbell, and said “‘We are proud that the Rainbows Choir has helped us celebrate the rebuilding of this fine pipe organ and in return we are very pleased to make a major contribution to society by donating the proceeds of the event to Rainbows which provides a place where life-limited children and their families in the East Midlands can find care and support.”

CEREMONIES

The Castle of Leicester Lodge (7767) along with the Wyggeston Lodge (3448) and Lodge of Science and Art (8429) were part of a unique joint meeting held in Leicester on Saturday 23rd May 2015. They met together in the inaugural joint meeting to celebrate their recent successes as Universities Scheme Lodges and to conduct each of the three degrees in Freemasonry to timely assist in progressing their members.

Since joining the Universities Scheme, over 50 university staff, student and alumni have joined the Lodges in just four years. The Lodge of Science and Art joined the Universities Scheme in December 2010 and is the Scheme Lodge for Loughborough University, The Wyggeston Lodge is the Scheme Lodge for the University of Leicester and joined in April 2011, with the Castle of Leicester Lodge being the Scheme Lodge for De Montfort University joining in October 2012.

The United Grand Lodge of England launched the Universities Scheme in 2005 to forge links with local University students and other young men so that they are able to enjoy membership of our historic fraternal and charitable organisation. A total of 63 Lodges in main university towns and cities across the country have now joined the scheme since its inception 10 years ago and have welcomed many hundreds of new members. The scheme also holds a bi-annual conference and Leicester will be honoured to host the next conference at Freemasons' Hall, London Road, Leicester in November 2015.

Members of the Lodges and visitors from across the country gathered in the decorative Holmes Lodge Room at Freemasons' Hall to witness each Lodge conducting one of the three ceremonies consisting of Candidates from all the lodges. The Acting Master of the Lodge of Science and Art, W Bro. Peter Legg, started the day's proceedings with a triple Raising ceremony. After a short break, the Acting Master of The Wyggeston Lodge, W Bro. Andy Green, conducted a triple Passing Ceremony. The Castle of Leicester

UNIVERSITY SCHEME

Lodge then conducted a triple Initiation with Acting Master, W Bro. Paul Wallace taking the Chair.

The Lodges were pleased to welcome the Deputy Chairman of the Universities Scheme, W Bro. Daniel Johnson, who said it was “a marvellous day” and that the Province were seen as huge supporters of the Scheme.

The members of the three Lodges enjoyed a special celebration Festive Board after the meeting and raised several hundred pounds for the Alderman Newton’s Educational Foundation a local charity that offers financial support to individuals and schools to help people access education or training opportunities in Leicestershire.

The entire meeting went extremely well and clearly demonstrated the very good heart of the three Universities Scheme Lodges within the Province of Leicestershire and Rutland.

VW Bro. Peter Kinder, APGM, who has overseen the development of the Scheme within Leicestershire and Rutland said "We are delighted with the amazing response we have had to this new scheme. Freemasonry has recently proved to be very popular amongst younger men, particularly students and this resurgence of renewed interest into our historic fraternity, which is 300 years old in 2017, has led to Lodges, such as the three University Lodges, having to hold extra meetings to cope with demand. The Masonic code of moral behaviour, charitable giving, especially to non-Masonic charities, & honesty really appeals to many young men, even in this modern day & age.”

W Bro. Daniel Hayward, who is the Regional Coordinator for the Scheme, said of the meeting "It has been a wonderful day celebrating the success of the scheme with so many friends. We look forward to welcoming many more young men who are looking to better themselves as people and assist a wide variety of charities by becoming members of our fraternal society."

RICHARD III RE-INTERMENT

out of the craftsmen working on the great cathedrals of medieval Europe. It is therefore highly appropriate that they can join with us in supporting today’s craftspeople, and in the provision of a modern tomb and setting for a medieval king.” This is not the first donation to Leicester Cathedral by the Freemasons. A stained glass window of St Francis of Assisi was installed in 1932, the Coronation Bell of King George VI was recast in 1937 and more recently a donation towards construction of a visitor centre was given in 2001. Speaking about the current donation, the Provincial Grand Master RW Bro. David Hagger said: “The unexpected discovery of King Richard III was of monumental importance for Leicester and we are delighted to have been able to support the project and provide our assistance to the Cathedral, for what is truly a unique event. Support for our local community is central to Freemasonry and with this donation we aim to do just that, by celebrating a moment of such historical significance for our city and continuing our long standing support of Leicester Cathedral."

Leicestershire and Rutland Freemasons, in partnership with The Freemasons’ Grand Charity, have donated £15,000 to Leicester Cathedral Charitable Trust towards cost of the reinterment of King Richard III at Leicester Cathedral.

In 2012, archaeologists from the University of Leicester excavated Richard III's mortal remains beneath a car park in Leicester, which were reinterred in a service at Leicester Cathedral on 26th March 2015 in the presence of the Most Rt. Revd Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury and senior clergy from both dioceses, and other Christian denominations alongside representatives of the World Faiths. Among those representing the Freemasons at the reinterment were the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. David Hagger and a representative from The Freemasons' Grand Charity, W Bro. Anthony Wood. The funding by the Freemasons will go towards the £2.5 million appeal for the reinterment of King Richard III including the new Chapel of Christ the King which has been built in the east end of the cathedral. The Very Revd David Monteith, Dean of Leicester Cathedral said “We were delighted to have had the support and interest of the Freemasons from the very start of this project on both a national and local level. A project of this nature touches closely the very origins of Freemasonry, arising

Installed Masters support restoration of VC graves

At the Installation meeting of Leicestershire and Rutland Lodge of Installed Masters (7896) on Friday 10th April 2015 at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester, the new Master, W Bro. Ian R Johnson presented £500 to guest speaker W Bro. Granville Angell in support of his charity, VC Grave Concern, which restores and maintains the graves of holders of the Victoria Cross.

After the Installation, W Bro. Granville Angell PAGPurs, who was the Prestonian Lecturer in 2006, gave a very interesting talk entitled “ Lest We Forget” encapsulating the courage, bravery and resolute self sacrifice with which Freemasons risked their lives in the service of King and Country focussing on those Brethren who received the Victoria Cross. His talk was based on his book ‘The Great War 19141918 - Victoria Cross Freemasons’ which reveals the unique deeds of outstanding valour of the 91 Freemasons gathered by the author's meticulous research in over 17 countries uncovering previously unknown facts.

JUNE BUFFET 2015

On Tuesday 16th June 2015, at Freemasons' Hall, Leicester, the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, E.Comp. Peter Kinder and his wife Sandie, hosted the annual buffet supper for the recently appointed active Provincial Grand Officers and their ladies. This was an excellent opportunity for the new team, appointed in March to meet in a very relaxed and convivial atmosphere.

Peter and Sandie, supported by Noel and Jackie Manby (DGS), and Richard and Chrissie Jelly and Michael and Beryl Wilson (3PGP), welcomed some 70 participants, including a number of Grand

Officers and Past Provincial Grand Principals and their ladies – invitations are customarily sent to all Grand Officers and Past Provincial Grand Principals for this informal evening, together with those Companions who help out with the administrative arrangement on the day of the Provincial Grand Chapter meeting. After reception drinks and a delightful sitdown buffet, Philip and Judy Dodd’s Tudor Choir provided a varied programme of musical entertainment. At one point Philip Dodd delivered his customary monologue, adding a touch of humour to the occasion. This time it was a story entitled ‘How to make a baby’ - a story of misunderstandings and double-entendres worthy of the notorious Whitehall Farces. As a gesture of thanks to the Choir, the Grand Superintendent presented a cheque for £250 to Philip and Judy for LOROS, their chosen charity, and Judy was presented with a bouquet. At the end of the evening, the Grand Superintendent’s lady, Sandie, was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Jonathan Varley, Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies and the MC for the evening. The Grand Superintendent thanked those who had worked behind the scenes to arrange the evening, particularly, Scribe E, Paul Wallace, his assistant David Turner (prolonged applause) and Peter Williamson. All agreed it was, as usual, a most enjoyable evening. As usual, our photographer, John Reilly, was present to record the event.

Provincial Grand Chapter March 2015 The annual convocation of the Provincial Grand Chapter of Leicestershire and Rutland was held at London Road, Leicester, on Thursday 26th March 2015, under the guidance of The MEGS, E Comp. Peter C. Kinder. The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, then welcomed the many visitors from surrounding Provinces. These included the Grand Superintendents from Bedfordshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire & Huntingdonshire, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire and Warwickshire – and other representatives from, Cambridgeshire, Gloucestershire and Herefordshire, Norfolk and Worcestershire. The convocation was very well attended, and the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent took great pleasure in re-appointing E Comp. Noel Manby as his Deputy, and E Comp. Richard Jelly as Second Provincial Grand Principal. He then appointed E Comp. The Rev. Canon Michael Wilson as Third Provincial Grand Principal. In doing so he paid tribute to the work done by E Comp. Richard Moore while serving as Third Provincial Grand Principal during the previous year. The Grand Superintendent also appointed his new team of active Provincial Officers for the year and appointed and promoted many other Companions to past ranks. Following the investitures, the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent gave his address during which he welcomed the heads and deputies of other orders and recorded his thanks to the many companions who worked so hard to make the day a success as well as those who worked behind the scenes throughout the year. The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent gave a brief update on the latest initiatives promulgated by the Royal Arch Executive and recent social events, including the very successful Royal Arch Ball, that took place in January. This proved very popular, with some 170 Companions and partners. Some 268 Companions (a record number) from the various Chapters in the Province were present and helped to make the annual convocation a great success.

Installed First Principals celebrate 50th Anniversary On Tuesday 17th March 2015, the Leicestershire and Rutland Chapter of Installed First Principals (7896) took another step forward. This was the day of the Installation of the new Principals and Chapter Officers for the ensuing year - and of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of its consecration in the presence of the MEGS, Comp. Peter Charles Kinder, and his team of Provincial Officers. A ballot was then held on the proposal to confer Honorary Membership on the Most Excellent Second Grand Principal, E Comp. George Pipon Francis, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Royal Arch in general and his support for the Leicestershire Province and our Chapter in particular. The MEZ then invited E.Comp. David Hughes to present his ‘History of the Chapter of Installed First Principals, No 7896’. This proved to be most interesting and copies of the presentation, in the form of a booklet, were presented to all those present.
