Dear Readers
We hope that you find this issue of your Leicester Square enjoyable and interesting? We continually try to vary the stories so that all readers have a wide choice to read, be it historical, Lodge activities, Provincial updates, celebrations or charitable matters. Should there is a subject we haven’t covered that you think may be of interest to the general readership…then please let us have your story for sharing! Your feedback is very important to us so that the newsletter remains fit for purpose and not just another magazine that at best is glanced though or worst …….not even read. Although the world of technology is ever advancing, the feedback remains that we continue to print and distribute a hard copy…… and will continue to do so whilst there is a sustainable demand. Happy reading!!

New Team members We are delighted to welcome W Bro. Ian Nesbitt and Bro. Freddie Harris onto the Leicester Square Team who produce this Provincial Newsletter. Both will bring new ideas and lots of enthusiasm to keep this newsletter interesting, informative and most of all, enjoyable to the readership. W Bros. Tony Molyneux and Richard Jelly due their other pressing masonic responsibilities, have agreed to stand down and we thank them both for all their hard work over the last few years in helping to develop the Leicester Square. If you want to talk to any of the Team about any aspect of the newsletter, then please do not hesitate to contact any of them with your suggestions, comments or concerns. PGM ADDRESS
PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER’S
Address at Provincial Grand Lodge on Friday, 28th November 2014 Brethren All, When I travel around this Province I am so proud to see the Fellowship and Friendship which exists in every Lodge and the large number of younger Brethren who have joined our ancient institution. It is a privilege to share in their enthusiasm and to learn from them how much they are enjoying the experience. I think the key word here is enjoyment. I always meet the new members, listen to what they have to say but above all stress the enjoyment and privilege of being a Freemason, a body of men whose standards of behaviour, whose commitments to each other and their families and to the Community in general, are second to none, are “Beacons of Light” in this troubled world. Standards which if maintained, will ensure that Freemasonry Leicestershire and Rutland Masonic will continue to thrive for generations Charity Association to come. One of the pleasures of Freemasonry is visiting other Lodges and other Provinces. The enjoyment of meeting old friends and making new friends. Since becoming one of the Provincial Executive Team in 2000, I have had the “privilege” of visiting neighbouring Provinces, of making enduring friendships and many of those friends are here tonight. I said last year that these friendships between us, as rulers in the Craft, augur well for the Brethren of our Provinces and our Order in general. Nothing but good can materialise from having mutual strength and support. I also thank my predecessors, the Heads of Other Orders particularly the Royal Arch and Mark Degree, the Grand Officers and you the Brethren of this wonderful Province in general. Without your support, my tenure of Office would not be as enjoyable and rewarding as it is. Long may this support continue, so that my Provincial Team and I can ensure the continued success of Freemasonry in this Province.

I again mention the splendid work carried out by the L&R Masonic Charity Association Committee, ably chaired by W Bro. John Peberdy PAGDC, with the great assistance of W Bro. Anthony Molyneux and W Bro. Frank Nichol. Last year we gave away at our Cheque Presentation mornings just under £80,000 to non-masonic charities. As regards Charity, I have two main aims this year. Firstly to encourage more Lodges and Brethren to attend these mornings and present their Lodge Cheques with or without financial assistance from the Association. By attending, you will enjoy a wonderful but humbling experience of helping others less fortunate then ourselves. Secondly, as I said last year, only two thirds of the Brethren subscribed the minimum sum of £20 to the Association and despite the tremendous efforts of both the Association and the majority of the Charity Stewards this percentage remains the same. Clearly something needs to be done. Unfortunately due to the illness of W Bro. Frank Nichol I have not been able to reappoint him as

Provincial Grand Almoner. The present Charity Steward W Bro. Anthony Molyneux has become Provincial Grand Almoner and W Bro. Anthony Sibson has taken on the office of Provincial Grand Charity Steward. We have agreed to appoint five or six Brethren to assist them at Lodge level to carry out their duties and to advise where necessary the Charity Stewards and Almoners in each Lodge. We have also started preliminary meetings to prepare for the Festival for the Grand Charity in 2020 as we need a structure in place, up and running for the commencement date in 2017. In addition to the appointment of these Assistant Charity Stewards and Almoners I may be able to identify a Brother to take on these very important Provincial Offices in the future. Whilst I am talking about our Provincial Charity Association, I should also mention the work being carried out under the Chairmanship of the Deputy Grand Master RW Bro. Jonathan Spence in the reorganisation of the Central Masonic Charities in London. Approximately one month ago at the meeting of the Provincial Grand Masters Forum in London, to which Provincial Grand Superintendents were also invited, the Deputy Grand Master outlined the proposed changes and asked for our approval which was given. In addition, there was a conference that day in Cardiff for Provincial Grand Almoners who also approved. This must have been a relief to the Deputy Grand Master, as the Grand Master had approved the changes the previous day! There is considerable work still to be done but I think we are satisfied that everything is moving in the right direction. We all of course contribute to the Grand Charity at the present time and give tremendous support to our Masonic home at Devonshire Court in Oadby run by the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution. This support is not all one way. In the last twelve months, 87 Beneficiaries in this Province have received from all four Masonic Charities in total over £306,000 in support. This demonstrates the fantastic work they undertake on our behalf and deserve our whole hearted support.
Lift Appeal and Improvements at our Headquarters Last year I mentioned the Lift Appeal and how pleased I was at the support you have given throughout this Province. The Appeal now stands at £154,000 which I think is a magnificent effort in these difficult times. We have also completed the laying of new floors in the dining rooms, a new bar in the Oliver Annexe. and the restoration of the Organ in the Holmes Lodge room. The labour was provided free of charge by Bro. Carl Heslop, a member of my mother Lodge, Highcross Lodge (4835). He is not even a Master Mason as yet but this dedication is an example to us all. Well done Carl.
Membership Report The Rulers in the Craft and the Board of General Purposes have recently formed a Membership Focus Group meeting in London under the Chairmanship of RW Bro. Ray Reed, Deputy President of the Board of General Purposes and a former Provincial Grand Master. Its terms of reference are how best Freemasonry can focus Members, Lodges, Provinces, Rulers and Staff to work in a collaborative and focused manner to (a) Stem the Loss in membership and (b) meet the long terms needs of both the Craft and Royal Arch. I have written to all Brethren suggesting that they register to answer surveys from the Group. This initiative is most welcome and it is pleasing to know that most members of the Focus Group are Provincial Grand Masters throughout the Country. After all, we as PGMs are working “at the coal face” and our views need to be taken into consideration as we represent the rank and file who are the life blood of Freemasonry. Their preliminary report reveals a staggering loss of Freemasons over the last 30 years. Clearly this is a very worrying situation which at long last is being looked at. There appears to be in respect of the losses, a distinct North/South divide with greater losses in the Northern Provinces. You may well ask where we are in this Province of Leicestershire and Rutland. Well, compared with a 22% loss in certain Northern Provinces over 10 years and 8.5% over the last 3 years, our Province has gone down from 3,057 members in 2004 to 2,915 in 2013. An average loss of 3.5% over 10 years and 1.4% over the last 3 years. Our loss is the third or fourth lowest of all the Provinces. On the face of it, therefore, to some extent, we are bucking the trend. Our Policies of Recruitment, Retention and Retrieval are bearing fruit. Our Mentoring schemes are clearly having a positive effect. We however, cannot be complacent; I trust therefore that you the Brethren of this Province will continue to support the various initiatives. Freemasonry as we all know, is not for everyone and clearly there will be losses of membership. However, the problem areas are (a) immediately after initiation (b) the first five years and (c) after going through the Chair. Brethren I need your help in this matter. One of our tools for recruitment are the UGLE and the L&R Provincial Websites, the latter in my opinion being one of the best sites in the Country. In the period June 2013 to 2014, there were a total of 78 membership enquiries from both the UGLE and L&R websites, 44 of which were via L&R and 34 from UGLE website. 20 of these enquiries have resulted in being initiated and 29 are currently awaiting initiation, interview etc.

Universities' Scheme As regards the Universities’ Scheme you are aware that we have three Scheme Lodges in this Province. I am pleased to announce that the next Universities' Scheme Conference will be held at London Road on 7th November 2015. This is a major honour for us to have this and reflects the appreciation of RW Bro. David Williamson and his Committee for the effort and support we as a Province have given to the Scheme. The University Scheme is very successful and during the period from 2010 when the Lodge of Science and Art (8429) in Loughborough entered the scheme, followed afterwards in 2011 by Wyggeston Lodge (3448) and Castle of Leicester Lodge (7767) in January 2013, there have been over 223 enquiries to their websites. Of these enquiries, 42 Brethren have been initiated and there are further 35 in the pipe line. This is a truly successful story and I am grateful to the Brethren of those Lodges (a) for adopting the Scheme and (b) for carrying it out so successfully.
Light Blue Club I would also like to comment on the success of the Light Blue Club. This was formed in May 2012 and was an idea from the younger members of the 3Rs Committee who thought the Province needed another outlet for Brethren to socialise outside of Lodge in a relaxing way, nights out at local restaurants, themed evenings, monthly social drinks, monthly newsletter with Lodge visits around the Province. An opportunity to invite non masons to come along and meet Brethren in a relaxing and enjoyable way. Social Media is a big part of the club with a Facebook page attracting 525 followers and over 160 members on Twitter. When I write to each Initiate, welcoming them into Freemasonry I do invite them to join the Club. Brethren should be encouraged to join this Club particularly in those Lodges where there is not a large number of younger Masons. In addition, it is paramount these new members should be encouraged at an early stage to take an active part in Ceremonies. In view of what I have said previously, we cannot afford to lose these younger members. I for my part together with my APGM, suggested a visit to the Quarterly Communication Meeting at Grand Lodge in September 2015 and a meal afterwards. My congratulations go to W Bro. Daniel Haywood, Bro. Freddie Harris and Bro. Robert Reay and others on this splendid initiative.
Rituals Last March I spoke to you about my concerns with regard to the reading of rituals, assistance to Brethren who struggle and Brethren dropping out of Office and the Wardens Chairs. Subsequently, the Provincial Grand Secretary wrote to all Brethren expressing my concerns
8 | Leicester Square | Spring 2015
and that of the Executive as regards the use of mobile phones, ipads etc, both in the Lodge rooms and at the Festive Board. In a letter concerning this, one brother, pleading that he needed his phone on at every working hour in order to do business, suggested that “I did not get it”, moreover “we did not get it”. But Brethren I do get it, we get it and on a lighter note, we are not having it! I was pleased to hear the Pro Grand Master at the Quarterly Communication of Grand Lodge in June in his address expressing concerns about the reading of ritual. I have sent out a letter to all Brethren as you are aware expressing our concerns and those of the Pro Grand Master about the reading of ritual. Something had to be said and in my view the sooner it was said the better. In that letter, I also reminded Brethren of Lodges particularly the Past Masters about their responsibilities to assist Brethren who had difficulties with Ritual. Far too many Brethren are retiring as Wardens pleading either family or business commitments as the reasons for not going on. I suspect that in some cases, there is an additional reason of having difficulty learning ritual. We all know within our Lodges of the Brethren who have difficulty. Everything should be done to assist them to go through the Chair by Past Masters perhaps taking various ceremonies on behalf of the Lodge. This way, the Master enjoys his year and the candidate perhaps has a better Ceremony delivered to him.
Thanks As last year, my thanks go to the Charity Office, the Year Book Office, the Registrar’s Office, the Hall Manager and to my Provincial Grand Superintendent of Works whose help has been invaluable during the last year. To the members of the IT Committee particularly W Bro. Derek Andrews, W Bro. Geoff Searson, W Bro. Mike England and W Bro. David Newnham for the major work that they have carried out on the IT Network. Yet again my thanks go my Finance Director W Bro. Brian Carruthers and also to our dedicated staff at Freemasons Hall and Devonshire Place. To the Provincial Grand Secretariat, to the Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies and his team, ably assisted by the Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge, my sincere thanks for the arrangements today and throughout the year. Finally, again my thanks to all those unsung heroes throughout the Province at our other Masonic Centres, which Centres we regularly visit, who do a tremendous amount of voluntary work for the benefit of others. Thank you for your dedication and the generosity of your time. Brethren enjoy your Freemasonry.
Thank you all for your kindness and support.
God bless you all. RW Bro. David V. Hagger

PROVINCIAL NEWS
Light Blue Club News 12 visits in 12 December evenings Over the festive period, a band of determined and enthusiastic Brethren from the Leicestershire and Rutland Light Blue Club (LBC) undertook a unique and historic feat, visiting 12 different Lodges across 12 different evenings in December. The Lodges visited were: • 1st December -
Jason Lodge No.7716 (Leicester)
• 4th December - Highcross Lodge No.4835 (Leicester) • 5th December - Edward Sherrier Lodge No.6757 (Lutterworth) • 9th December - Castle of Leicester Lodge No.7767 (Leicester) • 11th December - Beacon Lodge No.5208 (Loughborough) • 12th December - Rothley Temple Lodge No.7801 (Leicester) • 13th December - Old Oakhamians No.8033 (Oakham) • 15th December – Lodge of the Golden Fleece (Leicester) • 16th December - Temperentia No.4088 (Leicester) • 17th December – Reynard Lodge No.9285 (Syston) • 18th December - St Peters’ Lodge No.1330 (Market Harborough) • 19th December - Wyggeston Lodge No.3448 (Leicester) The event was organised by Bro. Samuel Harris of the Lodge of the Golden Fleece (2081), and was conceived not only as an enjoyable test of endurance (and waist lines), but also to achieve three specific aims: • To introduce Brethren to the joys of visiting and meet other Masons across the Province, by providing a unique opportunity to attend any of the 12 Lodges during this period knowing there were a group of likeminded individuals also attending; • To raise awareness of the Light Blue Club and its aims across the Province; and
10 | Leicester Square | Spring 2015
• To raise a significant amount of money for LOROS as one of the designated charities. Over the course of the event, over 24 individual brethren took part at various stages, including a few who had only been in the Craft for a matter of weeks but were keen to take part. Indeed, one Brother who was initiated at one of the meetings, then came to visit another first degree ceremony the day immediately after his own! In total, visits under the guise of the 12 Lodges accounted for over 60+ individual visits during the period, with the LBC attending meetings across the Province, from Freemasons’ Hall in Leicester to Loughborough and Lutterworth, from Oakham to Market Harborough. The Brethren were overwhelmed with the warm welcome and hospitality they received at every Lodge, and enjoyed seeing a wide variety of ceremonies performed, as well as the peculiarities and traditions unique to each Lodge either in the meeting or at the Festive Boards. Every degree was witnessed at least once, as well as an Installation, although due to the time of the year, Christmas Dinner was more often than not…… the menu of choice! The Brethren enjoyed being able to explain to other junior Freemasons the aims of the Light Blue Club, the events put on, and how much they enjoy meeting and socialising with others across the Province. As a result, many more are now aware of the Club and intend to get involved in the future. Bro. Samuel Harris was supported in organisation of the event by Bro. Karl Coles (Edward Sherrier Lodge No.6757), and both deserve full credit for their commitment being the only members who managed to attend all 12 Lodges. By the end of the final visit, both stated they would be happy if they never had to see turkey on the menu again! Over £800 has been raised so far for LOROS, with contributions still coming on. For those who were unable to join, but still wish to make a donation, please visit the following page: www.justgiving.com/12LodgesofChristmas2014/
PROVINCIAL NEWS
The Light Blue Club goes green? Members the Leicestershire and Rutland Light Blue Club started 2015 off as they mean to go on when on Friday 9th January, 12 brethren from 8 different Lodges in the Province (including VW Bro. Peter Kinder, APGM, and W Bro. Richard Jelly, ProvSGW) visited the Grand Master’s Lodge in Dublin. The Grand Master’s Lodge is one of the oldest Lodges in the Irish Constitution and celebrated its 250th anniversary in 1999. The Lodge initiates candidates and carries out all the routine business of a Lodge, but due to its unique history, it has a number of traditions, rights and privileges which stem from its origins in the 18th Century.
Highlights included the Chapter room decorated in an Egyptian style with a trap door designed to lower individuals down into another room beneath the floor during the ceremony, an ornately designed chapel-like Preceptory room complete with a stunning stained glass window, and the Prince Masons' room (Rose Croix) which was adorned with beautifully crafted wooden chairs, coats of arms and banners. The LBC were lucky enough to be visiting when the Grand Master of Ireland, MW Bro. Douglas Grey, was attending his own Lodge for the first time in his current capacity (having been Installed as Grand Master a few months earlier after previously holding the office of Deputy Grand Master). In addition to the Grand Master being the Master of his own Lodge, the Wardens, Treasurer and Secretary of the Grand Lodge of Ireland also hold their respective positions within the Lodge too. In the absence of these brethren there are appointed permanent acting Officers and therefore the Installation ceremony witnessed was that for the Right Worshipful Acting Master (in this case the RW is applied to the office rather than the individual) and his officers. The ritual was of impeccable standard and carried out superbly and in good humour by members of the Lodge, assisted by Light Blue Club attendees VW Bro. Peter Kinder and W Bro. Daniel Hayward who were honoured to be asked to undertake the roles of Senior Warden and Inner Guard respectively within the Inner Workings. The ceremony offered a fascinating insight into the differences between our own ritual and that practiced in Ireland, and was enjoyed by all the visitors present. Following the Installation, the Brethren had a chance to meet the Grand Master of Ireland before the Festive Board, where they once again learned about and enjoyed the differences in approach practiced by our Irish Brethren. The Grand Master offered his fraternal greetings and welcomed the Light Blue Club to Dublin, whilst also being very impressed that Bro. Luke Smith was visiting just weeks after being initiated into the Craft. VW Bro. Peter Kinder responded to the toast on behalf of the visitors, with a speech laced with good humour and fellowship, thanking the Grand Master for the superb hospitality provided by the Lodge. The festivities continued after dinner, as the Brethren of Grand Masters’ Lodge hosted the LBC until the small hours.
Prior to the meeting, the LBC were treated to a private tour of Freemasons’ Hall by the Grand Tyler of Ireland. The Hall was completed in 1869 and has been the home of Irish Freemasonry ever since. Not only does it contain a number of Temples, but also a specially built room for meetings of the Royal Arch, Knights Templar and Rose Croix, as well as an interesting library and museum.
A truly memorable time was had by all, especially those Brethren for which this had been their very first visit to any Lodge at home or abroad. The question on everyone’s lips was :
“Where next?!”

LIBRARY AND MUSEUM UPDATE
In recent times I have reported on new acquisitions for the Museum but on this occasion I would like to mention the Library. We are currently sorting out some of the stock in Room 19 that is rarely, if ever, referred to and putting some of the books we have from the Quatuor Coronati Lodge on the shelves instead. Many of these new books are very interesting and W Bro. David Saunt is taking the lead in moving the stock and ensuring it is all fully catalogued and therefore available to view. If we have any linguists in the Province who want to read historic Masonic literature from France or Germany, we have some very interesting books in our stock that would repay some effort in translating. Much useful information can be gained by reviewing the minutes of Lodge Committee meetings and I would recommend that each Lodge reviews the materials that are held in the archives and this can sometimes lead to new information that members of the Lodge would find interesting. In reviewing old books, you can compare the views of the authors that had been formulated by the available evidence in their day, to the current knowledge available to us today. Things change quite radically over time and new information overturns the views of some authors of 100 years ago. I have just been re-reading W Bro. A E Waite’s Encyclopaedia of Freemasonry and surprisingly enough it afforded me quite a few laughs. I suppose we all have prejudices but, hopefully, we try to conceal them as best we can. W Bro. Waite is not so feeling towards some of his fellow researchers and really condemns them in quite scathing terms. As you read through the two volumes you begin to get an appreciation of his dislikes. Just a small example of how books can reveal more about the tensions and rivalries between authors. Please remember that you can borrow most of the books if you want to do some prolonged research and the Librarian, W Bro. Danny McKeown, will be delighted to offer advice in selecting interesting material.

Defibrillators Installed Coalville
Syston
The Coalville Masonic Hall Committee recently installed an Automated External Defibrillator [AED] in the hall. The Philips AED, or 'defib', was obtained by Grace Dieu Lodge and installed in the foyer to the Hall.
Last year the Syston Masonic Association (SMA)decided to explore the possibility of purchasing a defibrillator for the Masonic Centre building as part of their goal to provide the best facilities for the many users.
The growing trend of having AEDs at venues where people regularly gather is, from my view as an acute A&E practitioner, most welcome. I hold this view as will many other members of the NHS ambulance services given the times we respond to a 999 'Collapse' call where a patient in cardiac arrest would have had their chance of survival much improved had adequate but basic Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation [CPR] and a defib been deployed prior to the arrival of a Paramedic. I always took great pleasure in informing relatives or friends of a collapsed person that I had been able to successfully intervene, rather than have to tell them there was no more I could do to save their loved one. The simple training for these life saving skills took 90 minutes at the Coalville hall on Saturday January 10th. There were 10 Freemasons in attendance who were given a 30 minute audio-visual presentation to explain some of the terms used in connection with an AED and CPR, the hazards to be aware of when deploying an AED and the simple to follow protocol that may one day save a persons life. We then moved to the practice manikin and practice AED unit. All present were pleasently surprised how easy it is to perform basic hands only heart compressions or even full CPR. Once the AED is switched on, the reassuring voice lead protocol that means you do nothing until you are told to by the AED, its that simple. Following the training session I was asked if I would be prepared to offer my training session to other Lodges in the Province. Of course I will!!! If you are interested then please contact:
W Bro. Stephen A Warden Wayfarer Lodge (8679) Retired NHS Paramedic Divisional Officer. Email: stephen.warden@virginmedia.com
W Bro. Ian Nesbitt conducted enquiries of what was available and submitted his recommendations, which the SMA approved. A number of fund raising activities took place and an order was placed and received within 3 days together with some free extras. Within a week , the equipment was in place A training evening for 10th November 2014 was advertised and Bro. Noel Bedder acquired the use of an “AED Mannequin”. Over 30 members attended the full “Hands On” training session for which excellent feedback has been received Many members now feel able to use the AED without fear should the occasion arise but we all hope it will never be needed? Contact W Bro. Ian Nesbitt for details of the supply of the equipment at very competitive pricing. ian.dnesbitt@btinternet.com

OLD PICTURE FOUND W Bro. Andy Green (Provincial Communications Officer) recently purchased a glass negative plate of a photograph of Freemasons’ Hall, 80 London Road, Leicester on ebay for £5. David Hughes, one of the authors of “The History of the Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester” suggests that this is perhaps a very early picture of the Masonic Hall, maybe even taken before the building work was fully completed - “By the style of dress of the lads outside I would veer towards circa 1914” Whilst the condition of the glass plate is quite poor, along the bottom of the photograph is written ‘Masonic Hall, Leicester’ and then the initials ‘MCPL’. A little research work confirmed that the photograph was most likely taken by a Mrs Agnes Moore, a seemingly prolific local photographer based at 111 Queen’s Road, Clarendon Park (MCPL standing for Moore Clarendon Park Leicester). MCPL was a couple based firm and along with her husband, Thomas Moore, they would travel around Leicestershire on bicycles taking photographs of local scenery. Agnes Moore sadly died in 1916 due to bowel cancer but her husband continued the business as a Master Photographer up until the 1930s. He passed away in the 1940s and many of the negatives he had taken over a 30 year period were apparently thrown away. The Provincial Museum is keen to look at any such L&R masonic artefacts, so please be on the look out!!!... and let the Museum staff know.
L&R Masonic Bowlers’ last end I am sad to report but after nearly 70 years, the Association is having to call it a day. Despite playing success in recent years, it has become increasingly difficult to raise teams in sufficient numbers. We are now down to less than 20 regular (though ageing!!!) bowlers and this is not sufficient to put out rinks of 15 to 20 players on a regular basis. Unfortunately and more crucially, there is a similar story coming out of several local clubs who, like us, are finding it impossible to fill offices such as Captain, Secretary or Treasurer, due largely to a lack of younger players coming through. We also know that in recent years, Nottingham and Northampton (our Provincial opponents in the Sidney Brown Cup) have long been facing similar problems. The Competition itself had been reduced to just we three Provinces, from the many who participated years ago but that has also had to finish, with the trophy itself remaining in Leicester, who originally donated it. We thank those bowlers who have continued to support us despite the pressure of busy playing commitments elsewhere and wish them all success in their future bowling endeavours

Uppingham Open Day On Saturday 25th October 2014 the Uppingham in Rutland Lodge (9119) which meets at the Upper Cricket Pavillion in Uppingham, Rutland, held an Open Day to raise awareness of the Lodge and Freemasonry in the local community. At a Past Masters' meeting earlier in the year, the 3R’s report from the Provincial Grand Lodge of Leicestershire and Rutland was considered and it was decided that the Lodge should hold an Open Day. Posters advertising the event were designed and handouts for businesses to give away with details of the event were prepared and distributed to local businesses in Uppingham. A press release was also circulated to the local media. Other Lodges in the vicinity were contacted to make them aware. The Upper Cricket Pavillion was open for visitors during the day where a number of Brethren from the Lodge helped welcome visitors along with the Worshipful Master and Secretary of the Vale of Catmos Lodge (1265) who lent their support. The profile of the Uppingham in Rutland Lodge and Freemasonry was greatly enhanced locally by holding the Open Day and that alone can be considered a benefit. Additionally, at least four people showed a strong desire to become members of the Lodge at some point in the future. The Lodge is now following up on those who showed an interest in joining our fraternity.
Christmas White Table The members of Howe and Charnwood Lodge invited their partners, families and friends to their Christmas White Table on the 17th December. A total of 114 people sat down to dine on traditional fayre, including Christmas pudding and home-made mince pies. After the meal we were joined by members of the famous Hathern Band for community carols. The evening ended with a raffle which raised almost £600 for the Worshipful Master's charities. All agreed it was a great way to start the festivities.

DID YOU KNOW?
Did You know? CITY CHURCH WITH MASONIC CONNECTIONS? On 23rd November 2014, the congregation of St Peter’s Church in Highfields, Leicester, including W Bro. David Hughes and his wife Christl, gathered to launch a publication of the history of the church which was only made possible after the Leicestershire and Rutland Masonic Charity Association made a grant towards its costs. A total of £1,000 was donated on behalf of the Province by the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. David Hagger at a Presentation Day held on 6th September 2014. The church was originally built as a memorial to Earl Howe, Past Provincial Grand Master of the Province of Leicestershire and Rutland, where the foundation stone was laid with full Masonic honours on the 14th November 1872. The church was completed in 1879 to the design of George Street and denominated St Peter’s. Within the church there are many masonic references in the fabric, not least in the East Window which was donated by the Leicestershire and Rutland Freemasons as a memorial to Earl Howe. Another Masonic connection with St Peter's Church is the wonderful 1910 organ, utilising the original casings of an 1870’s organ, which was built by Freemason Stephen Taylor & Son, who also built the superb Holmes’ Lodge Room organ in Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester which has recently undergone restoration. In addition, the organist of the Church for many years was Dr Walter J Bunney who was a leading Masonic Scholar and who held the honour of Prestonian Lecturer in 1935. St Peter’s Project aims to restore the beauty of this Grade 2 listed church and open it up to the community in a fresher, more appropriate way, thus ensuring a living heritage for Highfields and the City. Our assistance in making a grant towards the cost of the publication was greeted with spontaneous applause. A copy of the book by Paul Griffiths has been placed in the Provincial Library and Museum. There is in the Province of Lancashire, St Edmond's Church which has been labelled as a “temple to freemasonry” and “a total concept as exotic as Roslin Chapel in Scotland”. Details on www.philipcoppens/ stedmunds.html and as featured in the latest copy of Freemasonry Today.

Castle Lodge initiation record? On the evening of Tuesday 11 November, Castle of Leicester Lodge (7767) undertook an historic sextuple initiation ceremony at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester. This was the first time in the Lodge’s history that six candidates were initiated on the same evening, and in the same ceremony. It may well also be a record for the Provincial record books too! This being the final meeting before the Installation of a new Worshipful Master in December, Worshipful Brother Bryan Weston was in the Chair for the third Initiation ceremony of his year in office, having now initiated 13 men into Freemasonry since February 2014. A multiple ceremony was once again order of the day as the Lodge has seen a steady influx of candidates since becoming the Universities’ Scheme Lodge for De Montfort University in January 2013. Indeed, this ceremony came just 11 days after the Lodge conducted a quintuple passing in the Leicestershire and Rutland Lodge of Installed Masters (7896). The Lodge continues to attract candidates from a wide variety of backgrounds, and on this unique occasion the initiates included students, businessmen and retired individuals, all having been attracted to join
4 Generations at Golden Fleece!!! In response to the challenge in the article in issue 32 page 14 you asked if anyone can actually beat the 3 generations? — Well we certainly can with 5 members of our family occupying the Master's Chair of KS from 4 generations in the Lodge of the Golden Fleece (2081) • My Great, Great Grandfather – W Bro. Thomas John Gooding (joined the Lodge in 1917) served as Master in 1931.
the Craft either through existing friends in the Lodge or after learning more via its social media presence. After the conclusion of the ceremony, the candidates admitted that despite the inevitable pre-initiation nerves, they had enjoyed the ceremony immensely and were impressed not only at the military precision with which they had been conducted around the Lodge, but also the manner in which the ritual had been delivered to them. The meeting was well supported with 48 in attendance, a dozen of which were guests, including a student member from the Grand Orient of Brazil, who having arrived to study at DMU in September, completed his application on the very same evening in order that he may become a joining member and continue his Masonic journey with the UGLE. The assembled Brethren enjoyed a hearty 3 course Festive Board, which included enthusiastic singing of the initiates’ song and a raffle which raised £240 for the Leicestershire and Rutland Masonic Charity Association. • My Grandfather – W Bro. Albert Octavious Ward served as Master in 1945 • My Father – W Bro. Cyril Kind was then Master in 1978 • My Brother – W Bro. Paul Kind as Master in 1987 • Me – W Bro. Michael Kind as Master in 1988 On the night of my own installation My Grandfather delivered the address to the Master, whilst my Father served as Secretary, and my Brother as IPM Whilst I remain the only member now, and still active as the Lodge Chaplain, four generations of our family will hopefully (if I can keep going!) celebrate our unbroken family membership with the Lodge for 100 years, in September 2017 Editor – Surely nobody can match or beat this family achievement???

2 PROVINCIAL WARDENS AT ST WILFRID’S
At a meeting of St Wilfrid’s Lodge (8350) in Market Harborough, salutations were given to two members of the Lodge, who were respectively Provincial Senior and Provincial Junior Grand Wardens — a singular honour for the Lodge. W Bro. Bruce White was appointed Provincial Senior Grand Warden for the Province of Leicestershire & Rutland in November 2013 W Bro. David Greenwood was appointed Provincial Junior Grand Warden for the Province of Warwickshire in May 2014 So, for a brief period, the Lodge was proud to have two Provincial Grand Wardens in
their membership. The picture shows the two Provincial Grand Wardens with the Master of St Wilfrid’s Lodge, W Bro. Mark Peberdy, who was himself Installed in March 2014.
Friendship purchase medical equipment The Lodge of Friendship (7168) presented a cheque for £1,500 to Glenfield Hospital, Leicester on the 14th October 2014 to specifically purchase an International Normalisation Ratio (INR) testing machine. The INR is a way of measuring how fast blood clots particularly in those patients who are treated with the anticoagulant Warfarin. By having its own INR machine, the Hospital will save between 30-60 minutes per patient, giving immediate data on blood thickness, enabling treatments to begin more quickly at what is often a crucial time. This money was raised during W Bro. Paul Elliot's Mastership of the Lodge who, along with other members of the Lodge, have been patients at Glenfield Hospital.

Allison celebrates 60 years W Bro. Allison Gibson-Leitch cut a cake at the celebration of his 60th Anniversary in Freemasonry, at a meeting at the Burbach Lodge (8699) in Hinckley of which he is a founder member. Allison was initiated into Freemasonry at the Portland Lodge (6170) in Ashington, Northumberland on the 23rd November 1954. After moving to Hinckley in 1955 he attended Knights of Malta (50) up until 1966, when he became a Founder member of Sparkenhoe Lodge (8063). Not content with that, he went on to be a founder and Primus Master of the Burbach Lodge (8699). Over his 60 years in Freemasonry, Allison has also been an active officer in a number of side degrees contributing great knowledge and guidance throughout those years. A tribute to Masonry and an example to all, may he continue enjoying his Freemasonry for many years to come.

members moving on? 2 separate letters have been received from members of the Lodge of Science & Art (University Scheme Lodge of Loughborough University). Bro. Anqib Anwar, a London born Muslim who studied Management and Chinese who has just graduated.
“I just wanted to thank you all for welcoming me into the Lodge so heartily and guiding me along the way. It has made my time at university so much more memorable. I have joined a truly fascinating and humble fraternity, and I am proud to be a part of it. Although my time in the Lodge was shorter than I would have liked, I have nethertheless learnt a lot in the past two years, about Freemasonry and indeed about myself. I am looking forward to continuing my Masonic journey as I find my way in the world and will with no doubt be back at Science & Art at the next available opportunity. I wish you all the best” Bro. Sebastien Roger, a Belgian national who finished his studies last year but stayed on until Summer 2014, where he most enthusiastically manned the Freshers’ Bazaar, is a member of the LBC, visits widely and delivered ritual in the Lodge with great confidence.
“I was regularly initiated into Freemasonry on the 24th April 2013, Since that day , I haven’t looked back. Through Freemasonry, I have built many strong friendships, travelled the country, better enjoyed my life as a student and I believe that it has also made me a better and more disciplined person. But above all, I was simply astonished by the support and friendliness I received from all of you. I am proud to claim Science & Art as my Mother Lodge and I look forward to being with you for another year to carry on my Masonic adventure. Thank you for placing your trust and accepting me into this unique fraternity” The Lodge will be sorry to see them both go from regularly attending the Lodge but wish them both well in their careers and continuation of their masonic journeys.

Hannah’s story Hannah and Rob had been happily married for ten years and were raising two young children when Rob was tragically killed in a car accident. Hannah was unable to hold down her demanding job as a civil servant whilst being a full-time single mother and was forced to resign. Although she was reluctant to admit it, even to her Lodge Almoner, she soon began to struggle to support her family on her severely reduced income. Faced with losing the family home, one of the few remaining links to Rob, Hannah contacted Freemasonry Cares, who explained the help available from Masonic charities. The combination of financial support and counselling sessions she received allowed the family to keep their home, the children to fully partake in and out of school activities and to start building happy memories again. Hannah has now set up her own business as a financial consultant, which allows her to work from home and support her children. ROYAL ARCH MATTERS
RA DINNER DANCE - WELCOME TO LAS VEGAS On Friday, 30th January, at Freemasons' Hall, Leicester, the Royal Arch Dinner Dance attracted a record number of Companions and their ladies to an evening of good food, good music and good company. Following the success of the previous year’s ‘Red Dinner & Dance’, this year’s event was very quickly nearly over-subscribed, with 170 booked in. The ‘Las Vegas’ theme was obvious from the moment one entered the building – with playing cards and other gambling effects decorating the route to the Reception. The Dining Room looked superb with a picture of Las Vegas projected onto the wall, table centres all having ‘gambling balloons’ floating above and place names printed on playing cards. The evening started with a drinks Reception in the Holmes Dining Room at 7.00 pm, when the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, Peter Kinder, and his wife Sandie, circulated amongst the guests. They were supported by the Deputy Grand Superintendent, Noel Manby and Jackie, the Second Provincial Grand Principal, Richard Jelly and Chrissie and the Third Provincial Grand Principal, Richard Moore and Julia. Jonathan Varley, Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies acted as MC. Music for dancing was provided by ‘The Roosters’ and, as promised, ‘Elvis’ appeared in the interval. He proved just as popular and couples filled the dance floor. A raffle was organised by Paul Wallace, Provincial Grand Scribe E, with playing cards in envelopes distributed to each table – the recipient with the highest card on each table was later called forward to play ‘Three Card Brag’. The Grand Superintendent dealt the cards – and the eventual winner was
Nicola Holyoake, who received a gourmet hamper and a bottle of champagne. There were no formal speeches, but the Grand Superintendent gave a brief welcome before the meal was served. As usual, our thanks are due to Paul Wallace and David Turner in the Scribes’ Office for making all the arrangements and to the staff of Devonshire Place for the excellent meal and stunning decor ......... and finally to John Reilly for taking the photographs

RA Annual Church Service The Annual Royal Arch Church Service was held on Sunday 19th October 2014 and returned to its traditional venue, St Mary de Castro. Last year, because of the restoration work to the steeple of St Mary de Castro, it transferred to St Margaret’s Church. The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, Peter Kinder, the Deputy Grand Superintendent, Noel Manby, the Second Provincial Grand Principal, Richard Jelly, and the Third Provincial Grand Principal, Richard Moore, were all accompanied by their wives – and welcomed the Companions and their families on arrival. The congregation again numbered well over 100 and the service was conducted by E Comp the Reverend Canon Michael Wilson, who also delivered the sermon. The readings this year were given by E Comps. Brain Peel (St Peter’s Chapter No.1330), Christopher Tebbatt (St George’s Chapter No.1560), Stephen Johnson (The Gateway Chapter No.6513) and Paul Mitchell (The Chapter of the Round Table No.7762) After the Service, wine and soft drinks were provided by the Scribes’ Office, so that the Companions, family and friends could mingle and socialise in the relaxed and very convivial atmosphere.
Master Masons and new Exaltee 2014 Evening The 2014 event took place on Wednesday, 29th October, with an enthusiastic attendance of 27 Master Masons, 21 new Exaltees, 21 Ambassadors and Royal Arch Reps and 34 other supporters – totalling over 100. This year the Master Masons and New Exaltees again met in different rooms and received separate presentations tailored to their particular situations. The Master Masons, meeting in the Oliver Lodge Room, received the three-part Royal Arch Lecture on the history, symbolism and format of the Royal Arch Order – the fourth and final step in a Freemason’s journey through ‘Pure Antient Masonry’ - from Initiation to Exaltation. The three parts of the Lecture were delivered by E Comps. David Turner (Provincial Assistant Grand Scribe E), Paul Wallace (Provincial Grand Scribe E) and Jonathan Varley (Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies). Before delivering the Lecture, the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, E Comp. Peter Kinder, Richard Jelly and Jonathan Varley demonstrated the Opening and Closing ceremonies to the Third Degree – to highlight the references therein relevant to the Royal Arch. The New Exaltees, meeting in the Morley Lodge Room, received a presentation by the Deputy Grand Superintendent, E Comp. Noel Manby, and the Third Provincial Grand Principal, E Comp. Richard Moore, intended to give them a better understanding of the form and content of the Exaltation Ceremony, using a question and answer format. This is intended to expand on the content of the booklet entitled ‘The Exaltation Ceremony Explained’, which every Exaltee receives from the Grand Superintendent after they have joined the Royal Arch. After these two separate presentations, the two groups came together in the Oliver Lodge Room, with the New Exaltees processing into the Oliver in full regalia – an impressive sight for the Master Masons. There were then some concluding remarks from the Grand Superintendent, E Comp. Peter Kinder, and the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. David Hagger. At the end of proceedings, all were invited to partake of a complimentary buffet supper, when the Brethren and Companions were able to meet the rulers of the Craft and Royal Arch and exchange experiences with their contemporaries.

ROYAL ARCH MATTERS
Michael Herbert’s RA 50 year Service Award On Tuesday 13th January the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, E Comp Peter Kinder together with virtually the whole of his Provincial Team, visited Temperantia Chapter (4088). The occasion was to mark the 50th anniversary of E Comp. Michael Edward Herbert’s membership of the Royal Arch. After witnessing an excellent ceremony, when W Bro. Simon Baigent was exalted into Royal Arch Masonry, E Comp. Peter Kinder presented a certificate to Michael in recognition of his 50 years in the Royal Arch. Before making the presentation, E Comp Peter read from a ‘Big Red Book’ entitled ‘E Comp. Michael Herbert - This is your Masonic Life’. It was impossible for Peter to mention everything in the book because, as we all know, E Comp. Michael is active in virtually every Order in Freemasonry and has indeed been the head of some orders both Provincially and Nationally. The evening was concluded with an excellent Festive Board when over 60 companions dined and the Chapter presented Michael with a gift to mark this wonderful occasion. After being Initiated into Gartree Lodge, (7778), in December 1961, Michael was exalted into Temperantia Chapter on 12th January 1965 and became First Principal in November 1977. He joined the Leicestershire and Rutland Chapter of Installed First Principals in 1984 and was installed as First Principal in March 1997. He was installed as the Second Provincial Grand Principal in March 1992.
Double Exaltation at Morley Chapter At the Regular Convocation of Morley Chapter (8320) held on Friday 10th October 2014 (at Freemasons' Hall Leicester), E Comp. Andrew R. Green (MEZ), along with E Comp. Phillip Dodd, (Acting H) and E Comp. Graham Coley (J) Exalted two new Companions into the Order. Bros. Marcus Ash, from Prince Rupert Lodge (7841), and Alex Pohl, from Wyggeston Lodge (3448), were Exalted into the Chapter in a Double Ceremony, the second such Ceremony in the Chapter conducted in recent years. Comp. Alex Pohl, a student at Leicester University, is the first United Grand Lodge of England Universities’ Scheme Initiate in the Province of Leicestershire and Rutland to join the Royal Arch although it is anticipated that many more will follow in the future
