It is also heartening that the Newsletter is so appreciated by those whose husbands are no longer with us but hope that the Leicester Square is not the only way we keep in touch with those who remain part of our Masonic family.

The response to the L&R Masonic Foundation Stone Quiz was a nil response! It’s a pity that we didn’t get a response which would have helped us to identify these historical presences and work in our local communities! S Y M P O S I U M 200 YEARS OF UGLE The Lodge of Research (2429) marked the 200th anniversary of the formation of the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) by organising a Symposium and dinner on the occasion of the regular meeting of the Lodge held on the 27th of January 2014.
T
he day commenced with the arrival of many visitors both Masonic and Non-Masonic. The visitors were received by members of the Derek Buswell Lodge of Provincial Grand Stewards who helped them to feel at home. Some of the visitors had travelled considerable distances. Guests included eminent masonic studies researchers as well as many Freemasons from other Provinces throughout the Country. 96 sat down to a Buffet Lunch, and after lunch at 1.30. p.m., all assembled in the Holmes Lodge Room, which had been set in theatre style. They were welcomed by the Provincial Grand Master, the Worshipful Master W Bro. Michael Robinson the and W Bro. Aubrey Newman who informed them of the background to the Symposium. There were 13 papers delivered by prominent Masonic Historians from across the Country. All the papers related to the formation of the UGLE in December 1813, and to the reasons for the need to unite the opposing two Grand Lodges which had emerged over the preceding 100 years. W Bro. Aubrey Newman concluded the Symposium by saying that all the papers had been of great interest to Masonic researchers, and that in addition he felt that they had posed even more questions for further research. The Lodge of Research (2429) was opened by the Worshipful Master Michael A. Robinson at 6.00 p.m. The Provincial Grand Master RW Bro. David V Hagger was received into the Lodge in due form, accompanied
by his team of Provincial Officers. The Worshipful Master welcomed the PGM and thanked him for his support in celebrating the formation of the United Grand Lodge. The Assistant Grand Master – RW Bro. David K Williamson was then also received into the Lodge in due form. The Worshipful Master welcomed the Assistant Grand Master and thanked him for giving the Lodge so much of his valuable time in helping the Lodge to celebrate the Union. After the formal business the Lodge was closed and the Worshipful Master received a number of Non-Masonic guests•
Andrew Prescott a prominent Masonic researcher,
•
the researchers from Italia and the Iberian Centre for Masonic research,
•
Phillipa Faulks (editor of Lewis Publishing).
Representatives from the two oldest Lodges in the Province were admitted and assembled in the North and South. The Worshipful Master explained that the entry of the two Lodges, the Knights of Malta Lodge (50), which had operated in the 18th century under the Grand Lodge of the Ancients, and the St. John’s Lodge (279) which operated under the Grand Lodge of the Moderns, was symbolical of the division which had existed before the Union. The Worshipful Master invited the Brethren of both Lodges to cross the floor and to shake hands symbolical of the Union of the two Grand Lodges. A representative of each explained from the minutes of their Lodges, the difference which the Union had made, while W Bro. Aubrey Newman dealt with its impact upon the Province. Continued...

The PGM then addressed the meeting congratulating the Lodge on their efforts in organising such a prestigious event to celebrate and commemorate the formation of the United Grand Lodge. The Assistant Grand Master added to the comments of the Provincial Grand Master and said that in 2017 the Grand Lodge would be inviting Lodges across the country to celebrate and commemorate the formation of the first Grand Lodge in London in 1717. The celebrations were concluded when 115 of those attending enjoyed a White Table dinner in the Oliver
Dining room. During the evening all were entertained by W Bros. Philip Dodd, Jonathan Varley, and David Hughes to a short piece of Mozart and a short ode composed by Samuel Wesley, which had been written and performed at the formal Act of Union in December 1813 The Lodge of Research would like to thank Lewis Masonic for its sponsorship and all those who had supported them by attending what must be considered to have been a feast of Masonic knowledge and fraternal friendship.
PROVINCIAL OPEN EVENING After the success of last year’s open evening when 150 members and their guests attended after which various Lodges initiated over 30 new members, another event will be held this year at Freemasons’ Hall, London Road, Leicester on
TUESDAY 20TH MAY 2014 It is hoped that every Lodge in the Province especially the smaller Lodges or Lodges which cannot easily support an open evening on their own, will encourage members to invite and accompany nonmasonic friends whom they feel would be interested in enjoying membership of our organisation. It is also an opportunity for those who meet outside Leicester to visit the Provincial Headquarters and to show their guests the inside of the building and its many features.
After the introduction:-
The evening will start in the Holmes Lodge Room, when the Provincial team will occupy the Master’s and Wardens’ chairs whilst delivering a series of short presentations.
•
8 | Leicester Square | Spring 2014
•
The first part will be about Freemasonry, some indication of the various number of meetings, the festive board and social events that Lodges hold.
•
The second part will concentrate more on the symbolism of Freemasonry including the layout of the Lodge Room as well as the governance of the Order and its origins At the concluding remarks, there will be an overview of the charitable work we do.
After the 45 minute presentation, there will be a finger buffet in the Holmes dining room
including a first drink, with a cash bar available for purchase of additional drinks. All this will be held in an informal atmosphere to encourage questions on a one to one basis with a significant number of senior Masons who will be available to provide authoritative answers. After the evening, Lodges will then progress individuals’ interest in applying to their Lodge in the normal way that each Lodge conducts its recruitment. A separate application form is included with this copy of the Leicester Square mail out, to enable all members to apply to bring their friends along.
PROVINCIAL NEWS
PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER’S ADDRESS 29th NOVEMBER 2013 Another year has gone by and much has happened in this Province and of course in Freemasonry nationwide. I have enjoyed once more the privilege of being the Provincial Grand Master of this Province.
I
would like to emphasise that word “privilege”. I have always said since my initiation in 1972 that it is a privilege to be a Freemason and to enjoy the fellowship and friendship, but whilst it is not unique to Freemasonry, it seems somewhat lacking in parts of this troubled world in which we and our families live. I always emphasise on my visits to your Lodges the importance of enjoying our Freemasonry and long may that continue. May I also extend a further welcome to our many distinguished visitors. It is always a joy to visit their Provinces for their Annual Meetings. Many have become good friends and I honestly believe that these friendships augur well for the Brethren of our Provinces and our Order in general. I have said previously that there is a lot to be gained by mutual strength and support. The same support I and my executive team receive from my three predecessors as Provincial Grand Master, the other Heads of Orders, my Grand Officers and the Brethren of this wonderful Province in general.
Charity Association Last year, I mentioned the splendid work carried out by the Charity Association Committee ably chaired by W Bro. John Peberdy, with the great assistance of my Provincial Grand Charity Steward W Bro. Anthony Molyneux and my Provincial Grand Almoner W Bro. Frank Nichol. A great team effort! Last year the minimum subscription for membership was raised from £10 to £20, the average subscription paid being in the region of £35. Unfortunately, not all brethren, only two thirds in fact, are part of this team effort despite the constant urging of my Charity Team and the Lodge Charity Stewards. Last year we gave away at our cheque presentation mornings almost £50,000 to non-masonic charities. You only have to attend one of these mornings, to fully appreciate the joy that your generosity gives to others less fortunate than ourselves. As I mentioned last year, this Charity is not one way. The benefits that our brethren, our widows, and our families receive from our four Central Masonic Charities amounted to £340,000, an increase of 10% on last year. Clear evidence of an ever increasing need in these difficult times.

Membership
University Scheme
As in almost all Provinces, there has continued to be a fall in the number of our members in this Province. Although only a decline of 20, this is being accompanied by a fall in the number of initiates from 137 to 127.
I am delighted to tell you that the University Scheme continues to flourish within our three University Scheme Lodges, Wyggeston Lodge being particularly successful in initiating eight new members last year.
I am sure the situation would have been far worse if the initiatives we have been pursuing during the past few years, had not been in place. There is a duty on the part of all of us, not just Lodge Mentors and Almoners to enquire as to the welfare of our fellow Brethren. We are proposing to trial our Lodge Register scheme with certain Lodges during the next few months and I hope that this will give both information as to why Brethren do not attend regularly but also encourage them to attend knowing that they are not forgotten. Recently, at the Worshipful Masters and Wardens dinner to which Lodge Liaison Officers were also invited, interesting talks were given by W Bro. Andy Green, the Provincial Grand Training Officer on both our Lodge Ambassador Scheme and our Social Media Strategy. These initiatives coupled with our recently enhanced Provincial Website, our Provincial Booklets and our new Initiatives to embody both Facebook and Twitter, means that all masons both young and old can have a greater grasp and knowledge of our Order. An opportunity to spread the word and to talk in an authoritative way about our ideals and our place in Society.
10 | Leicester Square | Spring 2014
Recently I attended together with V W Bro. Peter Kinder, our University Scheme Liaison Officer and members of all three Lodges, the annual University Scheme Conference at Nottingham attended by the Assistant Grand Master R W Bro. David Williamson. It was a most interesting day and I believe consolidated the success of the scheme. Anything that encourages younger men to join our Order deserves success.
Liaison Officers This has been a rewarding year for the Liaison Officers scheme and on at least two occasions it has enabled me and my Executive Team to have immediate and first-hand knowledge of problems that have arisen within a Lodge. I see the Liaison Officer as a conduit for information, both between the Province and the Lodge and of course vice versa. A Liaison Officer is there to help when required, not to interfere.
Lifts and Improvements at our Headquarters Last year at this meeting, I launched an appeal to raise ÂŁ160,000 to install lifts in this building to enable Brethren and Visitors, whether wheelchair bound or whether they have difficulty in climbing stairs, to gain access to this building. I am pleased and relieved to say that the Brethren and Lodges have responded magnificently to my Appeal. Whilst we have not yet achieved the target, the lifts have been installed for the benefit of so many people. In addition during the shutdown period, we took the opportunity of refurbishing the downstairs toilets, installation of new servers and rewiring the building for both the computers and wi fi. Installing a CRM system and diary system for the management of both our Masonic and Commercial activities and installing a new fire alarm safety system, the latter system being over 30 years old. This work was carried out both on time and on budget by the contractors involved.
PROVINCIAL NEWS
A truly remarkable achievement considering the time scale of 6 weeks. My thanks also go to the staff of this building who worked so hard to restore this building to its pristine condition. A Headquarters of which we all can be proud. I intend, as the appeal has not yet reached its target, to continue it until May next year. Anything you can do Brethren to achieve the target would be much appreciated. As last year my thanks go to the Charity Office, the Year Book Office, the Registrar’s Office, the Hall Manager, Nicola Holyoake, who I am pleased to say is recovering from her recent operation, the Custodian and to my Provincial Grand Superintendent of Works whose help has been invaluable during the last few months. To the members of the IT Committee, particularly W Bro. Derek Andrews, W Bro. Geoff Searson and Bro. Steve Harling for the major work that they have carried out on the IT network. Yet again my thanks go to my Finance Director W Bro. Brian Carruthers and also to the staff at Freemasons Hall and Devonshire Place. To the Provincial Grand Secretariat, to the Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies and his team, ably assisted by W Bro. David Sansom and the Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge, my sincere thanks for the arrangements today and throughout the year. Finally my thanks to all those unsung heroes throughout the Province at our other Masonic Centres, which centres we regularly visit and who do a tremendous amount of voluntary work for the benefit of others. Thank you for your dedication and the generosity of your time. Brethren I believe that there are exciting times ahead for Freemasonry but above all Brethren enjoy your Freemasonry. Thank you all for your kindness and support.
God Bless You All. David V Hagger Provincial Grand Master
Universities’ Scheme National Conference The Provincial Grand Master, Assistant Provincial Grand Master, and members from the three Universities' Scheme Lodges in the Province – Wyggeston Lodge (3448), Castle of Leicester Lodge (7767) and Lodge of Science and Art (8429) attended the United Grand Lodge of England Universities’ Scheme National Conference which was held on Saturday 2nd November 2013 at Nottingham Masonic Hall. This was an opportunity for members involved with the Scheme to meet other University Lodges to share skills and experience and meet together. The Province was extremely honoured to have W Bro. Andy Green, deliver a superb presentation at the morning plenary session on the use of social media. This was well received and was aimed at encouraging Universities’ Scheme Lodges to consider adopting Facebook and Twitter as a means of communication between its own members and also the wider academic community. Other sessions included :• the recruitment and retention of younger Masons • a demonstration of a multiple ceremony • the experiences of the Scheme by President Lodge (8053), in South Africa. It was an extremely informative day which was enjoyed by all and was attended by over 160 delegates representing the 58 Universities’ Scheme Lodges.

Freemasonry Today interviews
Wyggeston Lodge University students On Friday 20th September 2013, a journalist and photographer from Freemasonry Today, the Official journal of the United Grand Lodge of England, visited Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester to meet and interview some of the student members from The Wyggeston Lodge that have joined via the UGLE Universities’ Scheme. Since joining the Universities’ Scheme in April 2011 as the designated Lodge for University of Leicester students, the Lodge has warmly welcomed over 12 students as new members. Many of the students are under-graduates from a wide range of academic disciplines including Law, Medicine, History, Medical Biochemistry and Economics. Five students talked openly about their membership, what attracted them to join the fraternity,

how they came to join and why they continue to enjoy being Freemasons whilst studying at University. The Assistant Provincial Grand Master, VW Bro. Peter Kinder, who is the Provincial Universities’ Scheme Liaison Officer, was also interviewed along with the Master, W Bro. Tom Bodycot, and the Secretary of the Lodge, W Bro. Andy Green, who discussed the success of the Universities’ Scheme within the Lodge and
it’s wider impact in the Province on bringing enthusiastic younger members to the Craft. Students Alex Pohl (aged 22), Jeff Zhu (23), Andrew Slater (20), Peter Clarke (20) and Peter Shandley (22) all discussed why Freemasonry is as relevant today as when the United Grand Lodge of England was formed nearly 300 years ago.

LODGE NEWS
Message from Sri Lanka It may come as a surprise to learn Freemasonry in Sri Lanka (or Ceylon as it was formally known) has a long, rich and distinguished history, dating back to the period of Dutch colonial rule in the 18th century. Today, this small and beautiful island can boast a number of resplendent Masonic Halls and has Lodges which belong to the English, Irish and Scottish constitutions. Bro. Patrick O'Shaughnessy became a Freemason in 2007 in Temperantia Lodge and subsequently decided to emigrate to Sri Lanka to teach in 2012 with his partner. Once he got there he was keen to put the Masonic Brotherly Love to the test. He had thoroughly enjoyed Freemasonry at Temperantia and was keen to maintain regular attendance at a Lodge in his new location in South Asia. Having never attended a Lodge other than Temperantia before, he admitted that he was slightly nervous about the prospect of visiting! Having cleared his intentions as per Masonic requirements, he made contact and arrived at the Victoria Masonic Temple in Central Colombo, W Bro. Mahendra Perera and all the Brethren of Orion Lodge (5130) made him feel well and truly welcome! Attending a Lodge meeting, during the toasts he was humbled to learn how keenly committed our Sri Lankan Brethren are to undertaking charitable work and giving back to the community. One initiative by the Brethren of Orion Lodge includes ensuring that a local family with infant children has access to a specialised milk formula , which they could not otherwise afford but without which they simply could not survive. Throughout the evening, every brother in attendance warmly thanked him for visiting and did all that they could to ensure that he had an outstanding experience to remember, even to the extent of ensuring that he had a lift back home! He is delighted to say that he has now become a member of Orion Lodge and is thankful to all the Brethren for helping him feel a step closer to family and friends at home via their unswerving fraternal support, encouragement and companionship. He strongly encourages any Brother visiting this beautiful island to arrange a visit to a Lodge during their stay there. Finally, he is pleased to report that the Masonic traditions of a warm welcome, brotherly love, charity and friendship are very much alive and well at the District Grand Lodge of Sri Lanka!

ON DOUBLE TIME When Richard Wright was Installed as Master of White Horse Lodge - Wiltshire (2227) in October 2013 there was a sense of "deja vu" for a select group of Brethren present. This was because a small group from Wiltshire had travelled north in May 2013 to see Richard Installed as Master of the Old Oakhamian Lodge (8033). The Lodge meets at Richard’s old school – Oakham School. He is therefore (by special dispensation) Master of both Old Oakhamians Lodge (L&R) and White Horse Lodge(Wilts) at the same time. His White Horse Installation was well attended with Brethren from the Old Oakhamian Lodge, having travelled from far afield to be there. Richard was also delighted to have his father, Dennis, there for the occasion and who is a member of Uppingham in Rutland Lodge (9119) and has been a Freemason for over 50 years.
Their combined service to Freemasonry is over 83 years - and long may it continue!
University Lodges’ Ball Members from Leicestershire and Rutland University Scheme Lodges (The Wyggeston Lodge – 3448, Castle of Leicester Lodge – 7767) together with VW Bro. Peter Kinder (APGM) and their partners, travelled to London on Saturday 23rd November 2013 to attend the University Lodges’ Ball held at Armoury House of the Honourable Artillery Company. For many years the tradition of the Masonic Ball in Oxford and Cambridge was one of the highlights of the University social calendar. Unfortunately it has not been held for the past 60 years. The current Ball was held to commemorate the Grand Ball held by Apollo Lodge in 1863 at Christ Church to celebrate the wedding of the Prince of Wales (later Grand Master and King Edward VII) and Princess Alexandra of Denmark, who both attended. The revived Ball was held to support the Royal College of Surgeons and Combat Stress, the veterans’ mental health charity. The evening began with a Champagne reception accompanied by a string quartet. A Pre-Ball Banquet was then enjoyed by approximately 400 diners. After dinner, guests enjoyed a wide range of entertainment concluding with a disco and a silent disco until 2am.

Tony Harvey presented his Prestonian Lecture for 2012 at the Lodge of Installed Masters Lodge (7896) on 31st October 2013 entitled “Scouting & Freemasonry: two parallel organisations” to a privileged assembly of approximately 100 (highest turnout of members in the Lodge’s history) Tony explored the parallels of fellowship, harmony and shared moral values between Scouting and Freemasonry. The first membership requirement of each organisation is that those who join must profess a belief in a Supreme Being. A key moral principal the organisations share is “service to others”. The differences between the organisations was recognised: Scouting is a youth movement, open to both boys and girls, while Freemasonry is open only to males of mature age. History confirms Robert Baden-Powell, although not a mason himself, had many friends, including Rudyard Kipling, and associates who were. Tony explained his belief that the challenge for Freemasonry was to protect its core, (landmarks and ritual), while ensuring its accessibility to the modern, working Masons. At the end of the evening the following presentations were made:•
A cheque for £310.00, for the “Lift Appeal”, was presented to the PGM.
•
£116.00 was added to the Almoner's Account.
•
A cheque for £115.00, made out in favour of the Prestonian Lecturer's Charity was augmented by the sale of books amounting to £218.00 which will be shared between the Masonic Samaritan Fund and the Scout Association's archive development project.

PGM Conducts a Triple at Beacon On Thursday 13th February 2014, the Provincial Grand Master accompanied by his Provincial Officers, attended a meeting of the Beacon Lodge (5208) in Loughborough. At the meeting the PGM accepted the gavel from the Worshipful Master, W Bro. Fred Harris and conducted a very impressive triple Passing ceremony. He was assisted in this task by representatives from the 3 Universities' Scheme Lodges who, being very familiar with multiple ceremonies, acted as Lodge Officers. The Lodge room at Loughborough was full to capacity as was the Festive Board afterwards. The Beacon Lodge is very vibrant with a number of Brethren waiting to be Passed and Raised which necessitated the need for a multiple ceremony. The Provincial Grand Master (middle) is pictured with the Worshipful Master, W Bro. Fred Harris and the three new Fellowcrafts dressed in Black Bow Ties – Bros. Alan Farmer, Shawn Kerrigan and Andrew Parkinson.

ROYAL ARCH MATTERS
G AY T O N TAYLOR’S 60 YEARS IN THE RA On Wednesday, 15th January 2014, at London Road, the Chapter of Welcome hosted a celebration of E Comp. Gayton Cusley Taylor’s 60 years in the Royal Arch – he was exalted into the Chapter of Welcome on 18th November 1953. Unfortunately, due to a recent illness, Gayton was unable to be present – however, the landmark was still celebrated with due admiration, affection and enthusiasm. It was always planned that The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, E Comp. Peter Kinder, accompanied by the Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies, E Comp. Jonathan Varley PAGDC, would attend to present the Certificate – but, what Gayton did not know, was that the whole Provincial Team would be in attendance and would enter the Chapter in formal procession. E Comps. Derek Buswell and Michael Roalfe, both Past Provincial Grand Masters, were also present. When the item on the Agenda was announced, E Comp. Peter Kinder, gave a very thoughtful introduction, expressing his disappointment that, in the event, E Comp. Gayton had not been able to make the journey from his home in Norfolk. He then asked E Comp. Jonathan Varley (Provincial Grand DC) to read the citation from the certificate. It was also noted that over the years E Comp. Gayton became an Honorary member of 15 Chapters in the Province. Following the reading of the citation, the Grand Superintendent presented the Certificate to the First Principal of the Chapter, E Comp. George Elliott, for onward transmission to E Comp. Gayton. Some 80 Companions subsequently enjoyed the Festive Board, and there were many others who attended the meeting, but did not stay to dine.

ROYAL ARCH MATTERS
Master Masons’ and New Exaltees’ Evening The 2013 event took place on 30th October 2013 with an enthusiastic attendance of nearly 100 – including many Master Masons and New Exaltees accompanied by their Lodge Royal Arch Representatives or Chapter colleagues. This year the Master Masons and New Exaltees again met in different rooms and received separate presentations tailored to their particular situations.
Master Masons
The Master Masons, meeting in the Oliver Lodge Room, received the four-part Royal Arch Lecture on the origins, history, symbolism and format of the Royal Arch Order – the fourth and final step in a Freemason’s journey through ‘Pure Antient Masonry’ from Initiation to Exaltation. Before delivering the Lecture, the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, E Comp. Peter Kinder, John Townsend and Jonathan Varley demonstrated the Opening and Closing ceremonies to the Third Degree – to highlight the references therein relevant to the Royal Arch.
New Exaltees
Superintendent after they have joined Chapter. After these two separate presentations, the two groups came together in the Oliver Lodge Room, with the New Exaltees processing into the Oliver in full regalia – an impressive sight for the Master Masons. There were then some concluding remarks from the Grand Superintendent, E Comp. Peter Kinder, and the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. David Hagger. At the end of proceedings, all were invited to partake of a complimentary buffet supper, when the Brethren and Companions were able to meet the rulers of the Craft and Royal Arch and exchange experiences with their contemporaries.
Red Dinner Event
On Friday, 31st January 2014, at London Road, Leicester the Royal Arch ‘Red’ Dinner & Dance attracted a record number of Companions and their ladies to an evening of good food, good music and good company. Following the success of the Masked Ball in 2013, it had been decided to vary the format of the now traditional January Royal Arch Dinner – to make it a Dinner & Dance, with music provided by ‘Phat Chance’, the group that was so popular at the 2013 Garden Party. The decision proved to be right – as over 160 enjoyed the informal evening. Emphasising the ‘red’ theme, the room was decorated with a Moulin Rouge theme – with pictures projected onto the wall and table centres incorporating the windmill theme. Most ladies arrived supporting something red – be it a dress, top, jacket, necklace, scarf, flower, nails or shoes – or a combination of one or more of these items. And the men did almost as well with red jackets, shirts, bow ties, pocket handkerchiefs, cummerbunds and socks.
The New Exaltees, meeting in the Morley Lodge Room, received a presentation by the Deputy Grand Superintendent, E Comp. Noel Manby, and the Third Provincial Grand Principal, E Comp. Richard Jelly, intended to give them a better understanding of the form and content of the Exaltation Ceremony, using a question and answer format. This is intended to expand on the content of the booklet entitled ‘The Exaltation Ceremony Explained’, which every Exaltee receives from the Grand
The evening started with a drinks Reception in the Holmes Dining Room at 7.00 pm, when the MEGS - Peter Kinder, and his wife Sandie, circulated amongst the guests. ‘Phat Chance’ proved as popular as ever - and the dance floor was full most of the time. There were no formal speeches, but the Grand Superintendent gave a brief welcome before the meal was served – and subsequently thanked Paul Wallace and David Turner for making all the arrangements.

David Parkes Bowen’s 50 years On Thursday, 13th February, at London Road, St George’s
Chapter hosted a celebration of E Comp. David Parkes Bowen’s 50 years in the Royal Arch – he was exalted into St George’s Chapter on 13th February 1964. The photo above shows The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, E Comp. Peter Kinder, presenting the Certificate to E Comp. David – accompanied by some of the RA Executive. The Summons for the meeting indicated that The M E Grand Superintendent, E Comp. Peter Kinder, would be in attendance but, what David did not know, was that the whole Provincial Team would also be in attendance .... and would enter the Chapter in formal procession, together with a retinue of Grand Officers. When the item on the Agenda was announced, E Comp. Peter Kinder, gave a very thoughtful and amusing introduction, recalling many of E Comp. David’s involvements in many Lodges, Chapters and other Orders of which he had membership and indeed held high rank in. David then recalled the wonderful times he has had and people he had come to know and that he still enjoyed his Freemasonry. E Comp. Paul Wallace – Provincial Grand Scribe E then read the citation from the certificate. Over 80 Companions subsequently enjoyed the Festive Board, and there were many others who had attended the meeting, but were not able to stay to dine.
Richard Jelly on (Masonic) holiday in Grand Cayman In November 2013, Richard and Chrissie Jelly, took time out to visit W Bro. Richard Coles, of Prince Rupert Lodge (7841) in Grand Cayman. Contrary to the rumours circulating at London Road, their two heavy suitcases were not full of money to be deposited in Grand Cayman, but contained Richard’s Craft and Royal Arch regalia ! W Bro. Richard Coles, who is now resident in Grand Cayman, is a member and Past Master of the Cayman Lodge (8153) and in office in the Cayman Chapter, both under the English Constitution - and both were to have their Installation Meetings during Richard’s visit. The Lodge Installation was attended by the District Grand Master, RW Bro. Walter H Scott, accompanied by his team of District Grand Officers (most of whom had flown in from Jamaica). Following a formal processional entry, the District Grand Master took the chair and addressed the Brethren about District matters. He then handed the chair back to the WM. who installed his successor in a ceremony which was very similar to our Leicestershire working. There were only two toasts, one to the Queen and one to the Grand Master. The following day, E Comp. Walter Scott (pictured above) attended the Chapter Installation in his capacity as Grand Superintendent – and Richard was able to have a long chat with him – and he was invited to accompany the Grand Superintendent and two other Grand Officers into, and out of, the Chapter. In contrast to the Craft meeting, the Chapter Installation Ceremony did not resemble anything Richard had ever seen before. Having started at 4.00 pm, it was all over by 5.20 pm and the Companions retired to the bar! Returning to the hotel, Chrissie couldn’t believe that Richard returned from a Chapter meeting by 8.30 pm !! Sadly, Richard and Chrissie then had to return to the real world of chilly Leicester.!!!!!!!

ROYAL ARCH MATTERS
Second Grand Principal visits Leicester again E Comp. George Pipon Francis, M.E. Second Grand Principal, made another visit to Leicestershire, on Thursday 26th September 2013, when he attended a meeting of the Leicestershire & Rutland Chapter of Installed First Principals (7896) at London Road, Leicester. An excellent turnout was enhanced by the presence of the Grand Superintendent, accompanied by his team of active Provincial Grand Officers, who entered in procession after the opening of the Chapter – the Second Grand Principal then entered and was formally greeted by the Most Excellent, E Comp. Tony Morris and who later delivered a paper entitled ‘The Changing Face of Charity in the Holy Royal Arch’. In all there were over 75 Companions present in the Holmes Chapter Room. The Second Grand Principal, commended Tony Morris on his paper and gave a brief review of the progress made on the 2013 Bicentenary Appeal for the Royal College of Surgeons. He thanked the Grand Superintendent for the excellent support the Province was giving to the Appeal and said that, nationally, the Royal Arch should be justifiably proud of the fact that the income from the money raised would fund many additional research fellowships sponsored by the Royal College. Over 60 Companions stayed for the Festive Board, during which the MEGS presented the Second Grand Principal with a copy of the Provincial Year Book and a copy of the L&R ‘Other Orders’ history book. In case the Second Grand Principal got hungry on his way back to London, he was also presented with a Melton Mowbray pork pie, a Stilton cheese and a bottle of Vintage Port !! In an often humorous response to the Toast to Grand Officers, the Second Grand Principal thanked the Province and its leadership team for their work in keeping the Province in such good heart and prosperity. The Second Grand Principal also took the opportunity to reciprocate by presenting the MEGS with a pair of ‘Grand Superintendent’s Cuff Links’.

DEVONSHIRE COURT
Murder mystery evening?? On 20th September 2013 visitors to Devonshire Court found that the Lounge and Dining room at the Home had been transformed into the interior of a cruise ship. They then found that the ship's captain, appropriately named Captain De'ath had been murdered and a number of suspects had been detained to be questioned. Following a sumptuous meal, the suspects were further questioned. Whilst deliberations took place over coffee and port, entertainment was provided by Stuart Bryan from 11th Hour Productions and 'The Curve', They were then invited to guess 'who dun it' and why. Mrs Norma Lynch was the first correct name drawn and received a suitable prize. The evening raised over ÂŁ500 for the Home and there were many calls to stage another Murder Mystery Night in the future.

During the ceremony, the Pro Grand Master, Most Worshipful Bro. New L&R KT Head of Order Right Eminent Knight Adrian J Padmore was invested as the Provincial Prior for Leics & Rutland on Monday 10th February 2014 in the Oliver Lodge Room at Leicester. There were nearly 200 in attendance to witness this event and all but 3 of the 30 English Provinces were represented at the event which was conducted by the Great Installation Team headed by the VH & RE Great Seneschal Malcolm Ernest Slater. This meeting was combined with the scheduled annual Provincial meeting so a great deal of planning had previously taken place to make the event seamless and subsequent feedback from the distinguished visitors confirmed that the event had gone very well. A great team effort made all the difference including the host Preceptory (Ivanhoe) led by E Kt David Turner whose team dealt with Car parking/greeting & reception. The London Road Team (personally supported by the PGM and the Executive) were very supportive in making the building and catering arrangements fit for such an auspicious occasion. At the same meeting, the new Prov Prior invested E Kt Philip Mann as the new Prov Sub Prior and then all his Prov Officers for the ensuing year.
