Library and Museum Update Work has continued in the Library and Museum to improve the facilities and increase the accessibility of the thousands of items on display and in store. W Bro. David Saunt has completed a full inventory of the items and we now have an accredited valuation of all our items for insurance purposes. This is the first time this has been carried out for around 50 years and was long overdue. The valuers have been able to give us some more information on some of the items and we can now identify each item with a photograph and its location in the Museum or elsewhere in the building. The more mundane but equally important work of preserving Lodge archives in appropriate boxes and in an ordered way in our storage facility has also progressed well. There are only a few Lodge archive boxes to transfer over and catalogue. We invited Diane Clements, the Director of the Library and Museum in Freemasons’ Hall, Great Queen Street, to view the progress that has been made on all fronts and she expressed her delight and satisfaction at all that had been achieved. At the recent Initiates’ evening, W Bro. Walter Glover, the Librarian, and I were invited to make brief presentations to the Initiates and their partners to show them what the range of items includes. W Bro. Walter exhibited several rare books from the early 18th century that make wonderful reading and describe how Masonry evolved during the years following the inception of the first Grand Lodge in London in 1717. I showed two items that proved to have a curious linkage. The Moira apron was one of the last non-standard aprons produced by a Premier

or Moderns Lodge prior to Union with the Antients Grand Lodge at the end of 1813. Lord Moira was at the time the Acting Grand Master of the Moderns Grand Lodge (the equivalent of Pro-Grand Master today) who went on to be the Marquis of Hastings, Governor General and Grand Master of India. The apron was produced to honour his accomplishments. His ancestral home was at Castle Donnington and it appears that the proximity of this house to Ashby de la Zouch encouraged some French prisoners of war to petition him for permission to open a Lodge in Ashby where they were held during the Napoleonic wars. This was granted and you can ask the team to have a look at the certificate issued to one of the Brethren. We also have some French prisoner of war Lodge jewels on display and it is interesting to note that one of the French Brethren in Ashby was working in a local jeweller’s shop. Perhaps he was the artist who prepared some of these jewels? I do urge you to go into the Museum and look round and ask questions and find out more about

the remarkable masonic stories that are attached to these exhibits. We will be delighted to help you with your research. Likewise if you have anything of masonic interest, please do get in touch and we will see if we can help you to identify it?

L&R Freemason receives Industry Award W Bro. Simon Sharman (5664) has received an award from the Building Industry at the National Federation of Builders’ Annual Dinner in October this year. This award is in recognition of his craftsmanship of a piece of work he completed, which is now on display and use in the Front Lounge of Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester. The piece of work is the display frame of the Letters of Patent of the Provincial Shield (as reported in issue 29)

Major Symposium on the 200th Anniversary of UGLE The (Leicester) Lodge of Research (2429) will be hosting on 27th January 2014 at Freemasons’ Hall, London Road, Leicester a major symposium to which ALL Brethren are invited. The day will include:• In the morning, a special exhibition in the Museum showcasing items relating to the subject will be held during the morning explaining the particular significance of the items on display. • Luncheon will be available at 12.15 pm for those who will have indicated that they would wish to take lunch (and have made a booking.) • A symposium will open at 1.30 pm at which a number of speakers will present short papers, (each of which will last for not more than about ten minutes) on some aspect of the Union between Antient and Modern Freemasons. The formal symposium will end at 4.45pm. • Leicester Lodge of Research will open at 6.00pm. The Lodge will be honoured by the presence of the Assistant Grand Master (Grand Patron of the Association of Atholl Lodges) and the Provincial Grand Master (and his officers). After the formal business of the Lodge has been conducted, representatives of St Johns’ Lodge (a former Moderns Lodge) and of Knights of Malta Lodge (a former Antients Lodge) will request admission and will be welcomed on the occasion of this bi-centenary. The Lodge will then be ‘called– off’, and non-Masonic visitors will be invited to enter. A member of each of these Lodges will present a paper on the significance to them of the Union and what is revealed by the minutes of their Lodges of how the Union was received and the changes(if any) brought about by that Union. There will be a further short paper on the implications of the Union for the Province and Freemasonry in general. • An opportunity will be available for remarks by the AGM and the PGM. Non-Masonic visitors will then be invited to leave, and the Lodge will then be ‘called-on’ and formally closed by 7.15pm. • The Brethren and visitors will move to the lounge for drinks prior to the dinner (a white table). This event will be a unique occasion with the highest authoritative speakers in this field of research and more importantly give Brethren the opportunity to share in an historical event and extend their masonic knowledge. Provincial Annual Quiz The 2013 Provincial Fun Quiz took place on 15th May, held at Devonshire Place. A marvellous total of sixteen teams joined the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. David V. Hagger for another evening of convivial entertainment which kept in mind his insistence of making sure that ‘Fun’ comes first in Fundraising. The teams comprising of Masons, their families and friends were treated to a really interesting ggeneral knowledge test. The Quiz Masters - Tony Sibson, Martin Stevenson and Barrie Bishop enjoyed their evening and just about managed to keep control of the fiercely competitive teams in attendance, although the question ‘Which was the first 3D film?’ answer ‘Half a Sixpence’ did ruffle a few feathers! 1ST PLACE — ‘Temperantia Second’ (Temperantia Lodge No. 4088) 85 points 2ND PLACE — ‘King’s Cavaliers’ (Prince Rupert Lodge No. 7841) 84 points 3RD PLACE — ‘Knighton Knumbskulls’ (Knighton Lodge No. 4711) 81.5 points. The real winners, of course, were the PGMs Lift Appeal that benefited from the evening, to the tune of £720 and all those who attended had a wonderful evening.

Lift Take Off! Almost a year ago, I launched an Appeal to raise ÂŁ160,000 to install 3 lifts in this building to enable Brethren and visitors, whether wheelchair bound or having difficulty in climbing stairs, to gain access to all parts of this building. As you will see from the photographs accompanying this article and if you have visited our Headquarters recently, this work has been successfully completed. Many Brethren and visitors have expressed their delight at this initiative and have made full use of the facility to gain access to areas of the building which previously they had difficulty accessing or were even excluded from. The contractors have carried out their work in an exemplary manner and the Installation has been both completed on time and to budget. I am indeed grateful to them for these major improvements and after the extensive building work for the staff at our Headquarters for restoring the building to its pristine condition. The Brethren and Lodges of this Province have responded magnificently to my Appeal. However, the target figure has not yet been reached and I will therefore continue the Appeal until May next year. There will be several Provincial Fund Raising events during the period and I have pledges of support from other Orders and Lodges. If you the Brethren either individually or through your Lodges can assist me, I will be eternally grateful for what you have already achieved or in the future.

Lutterworth OpenDay An Open day headed up by W Bro. Clive Weston and a project team, was organised at Lutterworth on Saturday 11th May having been advertised using a large banner on the Lutterworth Masonic Hall frontage and in local free papers.

The event attracted some 72 visitors through the door and was supported by a good number of Brethren from each Lodge, with 39 individuals providing feedback on their visit.

The purpose of the event was to raise the profile of local Freemasonry; provide interested individuals with information on Freemasonry, identify individuals interested or considering to apply to join, canvas local opinion on proposed building works as well as supply information on available catering and room hire facilities. Tours of the Lodge Room were conducted by the Lodge DCs W Bro. David Milner and Michael Muncaster. Materials were sourced from London Road by W Bro. Roger Whitbread as well as Lodges’ own leaflets being made available. At the Lutterworth Lodges there are now 7 joining members, 4 candidates and 8 individuals who have expressed interest in joining (some of whom came through the Open Day event) It was agreed that the event ticked many boxes and we would look for it to be repeated in the future.

Howe and Charnwood Masons say “Ola from Madrid” In late June, a party of five Howe and Charnwood (1007) Masons and their partners attended a Ladies’ Festival held in the Spanish Capital of Madrid. The invitation to the Brethren came about due to two members of Howe and Charnwood being members of St Barnabas Lodge 3771 (Met Grand Lodge), whose WM this year (Gabriel Lopez) is a Spaniard and he decided to hold a joint Festival with his Mother Lodge, Phoenix Lodge of the Spanish Constitution. Over 200 people attended the Dinner which included 56 from the UK and was slightly different in format that we normally experience, primarily in the timings - the dinner commenced at 9.00pm, with the dessert course being served just before midnight. Needless to say, it went on well into the wee small hours. The guest of honour at the event was MW GM Bro. Tomas Sarobe, Past Grand Master of Grand Lodge of Spain. The 5-day trip included a supper gathering at the WM's Mother's apartment (with entertainment being provided by a group of ”Four musical Amigos“), a walking tour of Central Madrid, a private open-top bus tour and a dinner at the oldest restaurant in the world. All who attended had a super time and we are looking forward to another invitation next year.

Daylight Lodge meets in the Evening!

RATAE MERIDIAN (Daylight) LODGE (9673) held its Installation Meeting on the evening of Friday 17th May 2013 when Shusheel Kumar was installed as its Worshipful Master.

T

he meeting was blessed with many guests and visitors with a total attendance of 100. Notable amongst them was RW Bro. Suresh Ram PDDGM (Saskatchewan Canada), W Bro. Shusheel’s younger brother, as well as others from around the UK and abroad (the Lodge Secretary, having received apologies from more than a dozen others from three continents who because of distance and time were unable to attend). RW Bro. Suresh Ram gave the Address to the Worshipful Master to his brother during the ceremony. At an excellent Festive Board, W Bro. James R Williamson ProvSGW (as the official Provincial representative) in his response to the Provincial toast said, “It is a long time since I experienced such an attendance as this evening; back in the sixties when I was initiated such numbers were a regular feature and seeing the Holmes Lodge Room so full, brought back happy memories of a “full house” for my own Installation in 1982.” RW Bro. Suresh Ram whilst conveying fraternal greetings from Brethren in his own Lodge (Wascana Lodge No.2 in Regina Canada) enthusiastically and

emotionally presented Masonic gifts to the Worshipful Master to commemorate the event. Masonry is universal and it was one of the first organisations to embrace equality, colour, creed, religion and that was abundantly clear throughout the evening when so much fun and enjoyment prevailed. During the evening, due to the kind generosity of the Brethren, a sum of £369 was raised for the WM’s nominated charity, FareShare – a food distribution charity for the starving and needy individuals and families in Leiceseter and Leicestershire. The Worshipful Master thanked the distinguished guests and visitors for all their support, encouragement, and most of all sincere friendship. As Cicero (106–43BC) said,”Friendship makes prosperity, more shining and lessens adversity by dividing and sharing it.” The whole evening was made most memorable for both the Worshipful Master and all in attendance when a copy of the “Ratae Meridian Lodge No.9673 - A Brief History” was presented for the first time, dedicating it to the Founders and Past Masters of the Lodge who built and served the Lodge.

LODGE NEWS

Light Blues The Leics & Rutland Light Blue Social Club was formed in May 2012, it was an idea formed by the younger masons of the 3Rs committee who thought the Province needed another outlet for Brethren to socialise outside of Lodge in a non formal and relaxed way. With a similar theme and set up to "The Rough Ashlar Club" in Cheshire which was featured in a previous edition of "Freemasonry Today", the Club is going from strength to strength. Although the main focus of the membership is aimed at the younger/newer masons, its membership is open to all Masons at all stages in their career. Planned activities include… a few pints down the local, themed evenings at local restaurants, Q&A sessions and tours at London Rd, guest speaker nights, days out etc. So far 2 events have been held and proved a resounding success. The first evening was held at The Quorn Exchange restaurant where Brethren, non masons, their wives and partners all attended, they were wined and dined plus entertainment was provided by musician Lee Rivers, a raffle was held and with a percentage from each ticket donated to the charity chosen on the night, a total of over £500 was raised.

The involvement of wives and partners at most evenings has proved very popular, they can meet old friends and new, as well witness the hard work and charitable side of Freemasons. To become a member of the Club and get on the regular mailing list, contact can be made through The Provincial website, or contacting :•

Bro. Freddie Harris on 07976 203029 or beacontrees@aol.com

•

Bro. Daniel Hayward on daniel@danielhayward.com

The next event planned will be in the new season at London Rd and it will be a Question and Answer session held by Heads of Orders, a tour of the Museum followed by an Indian meal at a local restaurant nearby.

The second event was of a similar nature and was held at The Carillon Rooms Loughborough in November, again a substantial amount was raised for charity and a good crowd turned up for what turned out to be another very enjoyable evening. So far the club has donated over £1,000 to be shared between Rainbows, The London Rd Lift Appeal and SENSE. With socialising being the emphasis for the Club, the events will and have included an opportunity to invite non masons to come along and meet brethren in a relaxing enjoyable way and of course hopefully then pursue an interest in joining the fraternity. So far The Light Blue club is proud to say it has attracted 5 new members from the two events, two have been initiated and the remaining three are in the stages of being initiated in the upcoming season. Social media is playing a big part now in the club with a Facebook page recently set up , already it can boast 65 followers who are all Brethren, this will prove an excellent outlet for advertising upcoming events, plus sharing ideas and chatting about masonry in general as well as regular updates being put on The Provincial website. Membership is free and with the current economic climate, its tickets for themed nights etc are priced fairly to attract as many as possible.

The Curry night was a huge success, (organised by W Bro. Ken Beesley) when 89 guests enjoyed an evening of good food and fellowship + quiz and raffle which raised the magnificant sum of £1240. This has already been sent as a Lodge of Welcome contribution to the Lift Appeal following one made 2 weeks previously. The WM - W Bro. Nigel Robinson also handed a cheque to Jo Anne Wilson (MacMillan Nursing) for £500 to help with its valuable service to those in need.

Family Affair @ Science & Art

W

Bro. David Alderson (PPSGW- N & E Ridings Yorks) was a proud observer when his son Christopher, became a Master Mason in the Lodge of Science & Art (8429) on 27th February.

B

ro. Christopher was initiated into the Falcon Lodge (Thirsk) and the Lodge of Science & Art agreed to Pass and Raise him, as he is a student at Loughborough University and resides locally. He is due to embark on an industrial placement training year, at the completion of which, it is planned that he will become a joining member of the Lodge of Science & Art.

L&R Masonic Bowlers win …again! After a cold wet start to the season, the sunshine of July and August meant great bowling conditions. The annual pairs competition for the magnificent trophy (originally presented by W Bro. Samson Smith in 1906 who was also a founder of the Leicester Bowling Club) was held on the 19th July at Leicester Bowling Club on what turned out to be the hottest day of the year. This year’s winners were W Bro. Len Harris (Gartree Lodge) and Bro. Adi Wood (Halford Lodge). Soon after, the annual Sidney Brown Trophy competition got under way (competed for by Leics & Rutland v’s Northants & Hunts v’s Notts). 4 games were played by each team (home & away against each Province). The final result was that with 4 wins out of 4, Leics & Rutland came out winners again for the 7th year in succession. The Bowling Association is not just about bowling but in true masonic tradition, money is raised for charity at every match and together with donations from Lodges, £1,000 has been donated to 5 local charities.

Guthlaxton Lodge (7717) help Action Deafness

F

ollowing the presentation of a cheque for £200 from the proceeds of Guthlaxton Lodge’s Ladies’ Festival, WM Nick Rounding presented a further cheque of £162 to Jim Robinson of Action Deafness. The sum was raised from the proceeds of a very successful ‘beer and skittles’ evening organised by the Lodge as part of their annual summer ‘social gathering’.

T

he evening was hosted at the Black Horse Public House in Aylestone, Leicester and was supported by 38 Brethren, partners and family. With low cost, and everyone being involved in the action, the beer and skittles evening was a very effective way of encouraging the Lodge to meet up during the summer recess, whilst not putting an unnecessary financial burden on those wishing to attend. The ‘cost’ of the evening was covered by the ‘entrance fee’ while the proceeds from a raffle, including over 20 prizes given by members, created the ‘profit’ to allow the cheque of £162 to be presented.

Assistant Grand Master visits

E Goscote The Wyggeston Lodge Skittles The Wyggeston Lodge (3448) the Universities’ Scheme Lodge raises £200 for the University of Leicester, was extremely honoured to welcome the Assistant Grand Master, RW Bro. David Williamson (President - Universities Scheme), W Bro. Edward Lord (Chairman) and our own Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. David Hagger, his Executive and Provincial Team, to their Regular Meeting held on Friday 19th April 2013.

East Goscote Lodge (2865) had another enjoyable evening of Skittles on 7th June held at the “Wheatsheaf Inn” at Thurcaston. All enjoyed a traditional meal of “Skittles Fayre” including Faggots, chips, peas and Black Pudding. In attendance were 33 members of the Lodge, three Masonic friends and four guests, at least two of which are aspiring candidates. With their wives, this made a total of 40 taking part.

I

n total, over 100 Brethren witnessed a Double Initiation Ceremony recruited via the Universities’ Scheme - Bro. Chris Kent, a University of Leicester medical graduate, and Bro. Sam MacCuaig, an undergraduate student at the University of Leicester reading International Relations.

T

he Junior Deacon, Bro. Yogesh Patel, confidently conducted the Initiates whilst the Junior Warden, Bro. Jamie Mollart, very ably gave the Initiate’s Charge. The Assistant Grand Master and the Scheme’s Chairman addressed the Brethren about the aims of the Universities’ Scheme and its success, announcing that 56 Lodges across England, Wales and the Overseas Districts had now joined the Scheme. At the Festive Board, W Bro. Andy Green proposed the toast to the Assistant Grand Master who responded by thanking the Lodge for a superb evening and a wonderful occasion. He further congratulated all those who assisted the Worshipful Master on the “excellent” Ceremony.

T

he Worshipful Master, W Bro. Tom Bodycot, presented the Assistant Grand Master with a

pair of The Wyggeston Lodge cufflinks commissioned as part of their Centenary celebrations in 2010, together with a history of the Lodge. The Provincial Grand Master additionally presented the Assistant Grand Master with a copy of the ‘Freemasonry in Leicestershire and Rutland - The 'Other' Orders and Degrees’. The two other Universities’ Scheme member Lodges from the Province of Leicestershire and Rutland, Castle of Leicester Lodge (7767) (De Montfort University) and Lodge of Science & Arts (8429)(Loughborough University) were also well represented.

S

ince joining the scheme in April 2011, The Wyggeston Lodge have initiated 13 University of Leicester students/graduates. Being a member of the Universities’ Scheme has allowed the Lodge to bring the core values of Freemasonry - Integrity, Kindness, Honesty and Fairness to a new generation and have seen the average age of membership drop from 60 to 49 years of age. The evening was certainly a very special occasion which the members of the Lodge and all those who attended, will not forget in a very long time.

The Skittles evening was introduced as an annual social event, several years ago, by Bro. Andrew Kay who we sadly lost to the Grand Lodge Above early in 2012. The event has been held since, in his memory, and will continue forever in the form of the “Andy Kay Trophy” A special guest this year was Maureen Thorpe, Andrew’s long term partner, who enjoyed the evening very much. The WM, W Bro. Bipin Shah was, unfortunately, unavailable as he had previously committed to walking 20 miles with his walking group friends that weekend. Bips and his friend raised £1,200 for St. Basils charity which works across the West Midlands with young people aged 16-25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. A Raffle was held and almost every couple donated a prize. Norma Lynch’s preserves are always highly prized. Before the event, the WM was asked to nominate a charity and he chose “Médecins Sans Frontières” who are “Doctors Without Borders” who treat people where the need is greatest. By the generosity of all those attending, a donation of £200 was made to that very worthwhile cause.

DID YOU KNOW?

Did You know???

Freemasons’ public role in building dedications W Bro. Andrew R Green has recently submitted a research paper on L&R Freemasons’ role in the dedication of a memorial stone at the Leicester Town Hall in 1874. The full transcript is available from him, the Museum/Library or the Lodge of Research. Prior to the period of part selfimposed privacy assumed by the Freemasons during the 20th Century, their activities were regularly published in local newspapers and were invited to important civic and historical events including the dedication of Foundation or Memorial Stones for new buildings. Perhaps the most important event in Leicester's civic history where Freemasons were present was staged nearly 140 years ago when the Memorial Stone at the New Town Hall, Leicester was laid and dedicated with full Masonic honours. Commentary of the day certainly intimated that without the Freemasons in their splendid regalia, the ceremony would not have been befitting of such an important municipal building. Local newspapers, 'Leicester Chronicle and Leicestershire Mercury' and 'Leicester Journal', covered the event in great detail with other newspapers across the country, as far away as Dublin, Reading, Manchester, Ipswich, Morpeth (Northumberland) and London also publishing a report of the event. On Bank Holiday Monday 3rd August 1874, the Mayor, along with local dignitaries and over 1,500 school children crowded around

22 | Leicester Square | Autumn 2013

the Horsefair Street site for the dedication. The Freemasons of Leicestershire, marched in procession from Freemasons’ Hall, Halford Street to the existing Town Hall. From there they were joined by the Militia Band and processed to “Auld Lang Syne along Town Hall Lane and arriving at the site of the ceremony in Horsefair Street. The whole site was decorated with a multitude of bunting and many spectators had squeezed at the windows and on the rooftops of adjoining houses to witness the historic event. The Masonic Procession consisted of each Lodge within the Province preceded by their Lodge Banner. All were wearing morning dress, including top hats, and the collars and jewels of their respective offices. They processed four abreast in the order of seniority, together with the PPGM and his full retinue The PPGM. then proceeded to address the spectators and then completed the dedication with the laid down ritual for such events (not dissimilar to when a Lodge is consecrated!) After an address by the Mayor, the Procession was then re-formed in reverse order and proceeded up to the Corn Exchange where luncheon for guests was provided.

After the luncheon and other formal toasts, the Mayor of Derby proposed a toast to “The Freemasons. Although not a Freemason himself he remarked that he ought to have been as he had always considered the Freemasons as very valuable and highly respectable. The PPGM. responded by thanking those present for the compliment they had paid to the ancient fraternity which he had the honour to represent. He proceeded to give an explanation of the principles and symbolism of Freemasonry, together with the charitable giving that they made.

DEVONSHIRE COURT

Friends Entertain Following the success of the Pantomime staged at Devonshire Court in January this year, the Friends of Devonshire Court arranged for another Panto to be staged in March by the 11th Hour Theatre Company. The cast were a mixture of adults and children and played to a full house of residents and some relatives. One of the performers had a massive nosebleed during the show but in true theatrical tradition carried on to appreciative applause from the audience. On the 4th of May, the Co-operative Male Voice Choir under the auspices of the Lodge of Friendship (7168) entertained the residents for an hour in the afternoon. They sang 16 pieces in groups of 4 and covered everything from spirituals to songs from the shows. They received a warm welcome from the residents who appreciate their regular concerts. Also in May, the Friends arranged for 11th Hour to present an afternoon of entertainment based around the 1940’s entitled Blitz and Pieces. Using readings and songs they soon had the residents joining in with plenty of singing and flag-waving. Now residents are entering the Home at an older age and many more of them have mobility problems it is necessary for the Friends to provide more indoor activities and entertainment.

The Provincial Grand Almoner, W Bro. Frank Nichol, congratulating a winning ‘Owner’.

Ascot Day at Devonshire Court

The £2 minimum annual donation to become a Friend is essential for us to continue helping our elderly Brethren and their dependents in their twilight years. If you are not already a Friend please consider becoming one or support one of the many Friends events. A special thank you to those Lodges who continue to come into the Home and provide additional entertainment for our residents. On July 13th The Highcross Lodge (4835) hosted a strawberry tea at Devonshire Court for the residents. The occasion was much enjoyed by all who attended and the members of the Lodge and their wives who helped were greatly assisted by the efforts of Vicki, the activities co-ordinator.

Once again, Devonshire Court held its fund-raising Ascot Day in June and once again the weather let us down. A happy crowd still enjoyed their Summer Lunch and exciting horse racing indoors. Tickle, the pony arrived to entertain the children (and some of the adults) and with the drawing of the big raffle the event raised over £3,000.

ROYAL ARCH MATTERS

RA Garden Party Sunday 18th August 2013

Richard and Chrissie Jelly hosted the Garden Party at their home helping to raise further funds for the RA 2013 Bi-Centenary Appeal for the Royal College of Surgeons. Blessed with perfect weather, some 200 Companions with their families and friends enjoyed great company, superb food and some musical entertainment.

A

rriving from mid-day onwards, after parking in the paddock, most guests made a bee-line for the beer and drinks stations, where beer was on tap and wine and soft drinks were available. The next ‘port of call’ for most was the Tombola, expertly run by Terry Weston and Barrie Bishop. The Tombola raised £770 – and this was raised to £920 when Peter Kinder auctioned the star prize donated by Andrew and Caroline Brook - a day’s golf at Stapleford Park – won by Neil Scotchbrook. It wasn’t long before Chrissie’s helpers delivered ‘Naughty Nibbles’ to each table. Due to the numbers involved, the ‘Buffet Delight’ was served from two points in the house – However, this was not the end.... ‘Perfeck Puds’ followed and again some had seconds!! and to round it all off the helpers delivered dishes of ‘Choco Heaven’ to each table orific snooze To avoid everyone falling into a soporifi during the afternoon, musical entertainment was provided by ‘Phat Chance’, which eventually encouraged many present to dance. The ‘highlight’ of the musical entertainment was an appearance of ‘ELVIS’ (alias John Smith of Sir John Corah Lodge), who caused much amusement while performing a number of well known ballads.

‘thanks’ to the prime movers and helpers involved. The MEGS presented Chrissie and Richard Jelly with a pair of evergreen bushes for the garden. Finally, as a personal gesture of recognition for the support that Companions had given for the Appeal for the Royal College of Surgeons, Peter Kinder asked that the names of those who had supported all four major fundraising events to be put into a draw – the three lucky winners, who each received a mini-hamper, were Roger Moseley, Ian Johnson and Steve Finnigan. Although the fundraising effort has not finished yet, it is hoped that the Province will eventually raise in excess of £35,000 for the Royal College of Surgeons – a truly magnificent effort – for which the MEGS has expressed his admiration.

n The event would not have been complete without recording a number off

Second Grand Principal visits E.Comp. George Pipon Francis, Second Grand Principal, accompanied by his escort E.Comp Michael Scotchmer, made another visit to Leicestershire, on Thursday 26th September, when he attended a meeting of the Leics & Rutland Chapter of Installed First Principals (7896) where a paper was given by E.Comp. Tony Morris (MEZ), entitled ‘The Changing Face of Charity in the Holy Royal Arch’. An excellent turnout of 76 was enhanced by the presence of the Grand Superintendent, accompanied by his team of active Provincial Grand Officers. During a brief address, the Second Grand Principal, commended E Comp. Tony Morris on his paper and gave a brief review of the progress made on the 2013 Bicentenary Appeal for the Royal College of Surgeons and that it would fund many additional research fellowships sponsored by the Royal College. He thanked the Grand Superintendent for the excellent support the Province was giving to the Appeal as well as for being so proactive in the successful recruitment, retention and development of members of the Order. At the Festive Board, MEZ presented the Second Grand Principal with a copy of the Provincial Year Book and a copy of the L&R ‘Other Orders’ history book. In case the Second Grand Principal became hungry on his way back to London, he was also presented with a Melton Mowbray pork pie, a Stilton cheese and a bottle of Vintage Port!! The Second Grand Principal presented the MEGS with a pair of ‘Grand Superintendent’s Cuff Links’.

RA Presentation At the Convocation of Provincial Grand Chapter on 28th March 2013, the Grand Superintendent, E.Comp. Peter Kinder, introduced an additional surprise item to the ‘Agenda’ at the end of the meeting. Before closing the Convocation, the MEGS asked that E.Comp. Bob Heskins to be presented to him. To Bob’s great surprise, the Provincial Grand Scribe E, E.Comp. Paul Wallace, then read the citation of the Grand Superintendent’s Certificate of Merit, which the Grand Superintendent then presented to E.Comp. Bob in recognition of distinguished service to the Royal Arch in general and his devoted service as Provincial Grand Almoner in particular. It was estimated that he, and his wife Joy, had made over 300 visits throughout the province during his 5 year tenure of the office. The Grand Superintendent also presented a gift, of a Waterford crystal vase, for Bob and Joy to enjoy together in the years to come.

Masked Ball The tradition of ‘Masked Balls’ goes back to the 13th century in Venice when ‘prominent social figures used masks to disguise their identities while engaged in unscrupulous and immoral acts in pursuit of carnal pleasures’ - so said the historical note in the programme for the celebration at London Road on Friday, 21st June - a celebration designed to raise additional funds for the Royal Arch Bi-Centenary appeal for the Royal College of Surgeons. Before closing the Evening, the MEGS said that fortunately no ‘unscrupulous and immoral acts in pursuit of carnal pleasures’ were observed during the evening – probably a good thing as many of the masks on display left little doubt as to the identity of those behind them!! The evening commenced with reception drinks in the Holmes Dining Room, and at 7.30 we were called to dinner in the Oliver Dining

Room – where the candlelit tables were sumptuously decorated and Venetian scenes were projected on to the wall beside the stage. The 116 Guests, arranged over 12 tables, enjoyed an excellent menu. During the dessert, music was provided by ‘Fingers Fearn’, who followed this with their cabaret act – before providing music for dancing. The event raised over £1,000 for the Royal College of Surgeons.

ROYAL ARCH MATTERS

Buffet Supper The MEGS and his wife Sandie, hosted a buffet supper at London Road, on Wednesday 5th June, for the recently appointed active Provincial Grand Officers and their ladies. A regular feature in the annual RA calendar, this event is a very relaxed and convivial evening. Peter and Sandie, welcomed over 75 participants and after reception drinks and a delightful sit-down fork buffet, Philip and Judy Dodd’s Tudor Choir provided the musical entertainment, comprising ‘music from the shows’. At one point Philip Dodd ‘stole the show’ with his rendition of the story of ‘Petey the Snake’. As a gesture of thanks, a cheque for £250 was presented to Philip and Judy for LOROS, their chosen charity. At the end of the evening, the Grand Superintendent’s lady, Sandie, was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Paul Wallace, the leader of the team which made all the arrangements for the evening. All agreed it was a very enjoyable evening and an excellent way of getting to know other members of the new ‘Provincial Team’.

L&R Companions succeed (in London) On the fourth Friday of October, January and March, a contingent of Leicestershire & Rutland based Companions board a morning train to London St Pancras, for a meeting of Mornington Aedile Chapter (1672), at The Royal National Hotel, Russell Square. Half the membership of the Chapter hails from Leicestershire & Rutland, although there is a steadily increasing membership from not only the South East but also from Italy! Ian Smith (outgoing WM of Bradgate Lodge (6596) is the current First Principal and Tim Clark (also Bradgate) is Second Principal. Indeed, 4 members of the Chapter are from Bradgate Lodge, with the Lodge of Friendship (7168) also represented. There are regular visits from Companions in various L&R Chapters, notably Past Third Grand Principal, John Booton, who attended the March meeting. It is a unique ‘day out’ for various reasons. Mornington Aedile Chapter is the result of an amalgamation of 2 London Chapters but, itself, was in danger of surrendering its Warrant about 14 years ago. Fortunately, the L&R Companions, started a trend, which has given the Chapter its current strength.

These efforts have now being recognised, with Mark Taylor (Bradgate) receiving an Active Appointment within Metropolitan Grand Chapter, at their Annual Convocation in the Grand Temple, Great Queen Street, on April 11th and it is expected E. Comp Steve Doig, another Leicester-based Companion, will be recognised by Metropolitan Grand Chapter in 2014 E. Comps Smith, Clark and Taylor are also members of Gartree Chapter (7778) , meeting at Leicester. The future is looking bright for Mornington Aedile Chapter, with another 3 Exaltees in the pipeline. As they are all Italian, some parts of their Exaltation ceremonies will be performed in their native tongue but it is the Leicester & Rutland members who will be forever remembered for their contribution during the Chapter’s difficult past.
