LONG WAY BACK

2012 RMBI “Long Way Back” In issue 27 The Long Way Back (Masonic Bikers visiting all RMBI Homes) was publicised (on this occasion, the reverse route was taken from the 2010 original – Long Way Home route), and timed to coincide with the conclusion of the Leicester & Rutland 2012 RMBI Festival Banquet.

T

he tour started on Monday May 14th from RMBI Devonshire Court Oadby. The riders and support van driver were welcomed, breakfasted & chatted to by staff and residents before being cheered off & wished good luck at 0800hrs!

The trip took 5 days to complete visiting & experiencing many happy events, renewed & new friendships, plenty of cups of tea, biscuits, cakes, diverse weather conditions and above all the pleasure residents got from us stopping off to visit them.

We ended back at the starting point at Devonshire Court – Oadby for a reception hosted by V W Bro. Jim Buckle (DPGM) who welcomed us back all safe & sound and all the happier to have raised another substantial sum of £7,000 for the 2012 Festival as well as having a great week with fellow bikers friends and all RMBI residents along route.

The mileage quiz was settled with the Provincial Charity Steward checking the odometer of the lead bike (1432.4 miles) and the winners were selected:

The Masonic Classic Car/ Motorbike – Rutland Run Fourteen cars met at London Road on Sunday 19th August for the 2nd run of the year. There was a mixture of modern and old classics with one motorbike.

I (Bob Smith) had set a challenging route through the Leics & Rutland countryside. The first to stop was the Allard of Peter Wright getting stuck in 1st gear, but a little persuasion soon got them going again with the Ford Pilot 8 cylinder engine pulling them along steadily. In my MG Midget I was struggling to keep up with the Morgan, Lotus and Porsche ahead and found myself alone on the byways.

On reaching Medbourne I met up with the Bentley who had arranged to start from this point. No cars had passed through, then after 10 minutes they began to appear from all different directions, most having missed one turn or another of the devious route.

We now had a snake of cars touring through Uppingham and finally arriving at Whitwell, Rutland Water to display on the foreshore in fine sunshine after the 40 mile drive. All had arrived safely, no prizes for First, and picnic lunches were the order of the day before the cars dispersed for their journey home.

I hope to see more cars at our next run to Rockingham Castle in spring next year???

The Wyggeston Lodge, No.3448 “Give freely of yourself and behold all Worlds are yours”

University Freemasonry in Leicester

Student Freemasons mark historical milestone Since joining the United Grand Lodge of England Universities’ Scheme in April last year the Wyggeston Lodge (3448), which meets at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester, has entered an exciting new chapter in its 102 year history.

On the 29th May 2012, the Lodge held an emergency meeting to initiate two University of Leicester undergraduate students, Bros.

Chris Panteli (reading Ancient History and Archaeology) and Leslie Antwi-Marful (reading Computer Science) in a double initiation ceremony.

The Wyggeston Lodge last carried out such a ceremony 50 years ago in 1962. Also at this meeting W Bro. Douglas Ball, PGStB, Grand Officer of the Lodge, was presented a certificate by the Provincial Grand Master, R W Bro. David Hagger, to mark his 50 years of service to the Craft.

It was therefore a very special evening celebrating both the most senior and junior members ultimately representing the present and future of the Wyggeston Lodge.

W Bro. Andy Green, the Universities’ Scheme Subcommittee Chairman for the Lodge, says ‘This emergency meeting was a fitting climax to an exceptional year for the Lodge having initiated a total of six new members, including five students, something not achieved in over 70 years. Being a member of the Universities’ Scheme has not only re-invigorated our membership and presented new challenges but above all it has offered us a unique chance to engage with students from the University of Leicester giving them the opportunity to experience and enjoy Freemasonry, whilst studying here in Leicester’.

Highlights from the

L&R 2012 LRMCA Masons provide life-saving research equipment and support

n the 14th May, the PGM R W Bro. David Hagger, accompanied by some members of his Provincial Charity team, made a presentation to the Leicester Royal Infirmary – Cardiovascular Research Centre of £35,000 (from the Provincial Relief Fund (£28k) and 2011 Christmas Lodge collection (£7k)) in order that an essential piece of equipment could be purchased.

This equipment is called an “Automated Magnetic Bead Separation System” and will help the Research Team to carry out potential life-saving research.

RESEARCH GRANT The Masonic Samaritan Fund has recently approved a £65,000 medical research grant to the University of Leicester (based at Glenfield Hospital) to support research into the aftereffects of heart attacks. The 1st instalment cheque of £31,886 was presented to Prof. Nilesh Samani (Albert Edward 1560) and his team. Leics & Rutland Province have previously generously supported the hospital over recent years

LODGE OF FRIENDSHIP GIVE OUT TOYS W Bro. Merrick Platts and Bro. Nick Evans of the Lodge of Friendship (7168) visited the Leicester Royal Infirmary Baby Unit on the morning of the 26th April to hand over a large amount of toys that were bought from money collected at a recent Lodge Festive Board and kindly match funded by the Province and added to

by Tesco. The toys will be used to help children coming into the hospital unit to be entertained/occupied… whilst their parents are otherwise involved in their health care!!

OPEN DAY

Public Open Day

Success in Leicester Members of the public were openly invited to attend 45 minute informative tours of Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester on Saturday 9 June 2012 between 0930 – 1430 hours.

A

small project team worked for 10 months in developing the day’s activities and resourcing which included publicity and marketing, in the lead up to promote the event as widely as possible.

On the day, 43 Freemasons and a number of wives hosted 255 visitors in 21 separate groups around the Georgian building housing the Provincial Headquarters of Leicestershire & Rutland.

The tours consisted of 6 staged presentations throughout the building on:•

The principles, history and symbolism of Freemasonry

•

The Library and Museum

•

Charitable activities supported by local Freemasons

•

The Devonshire Place banqueting and meeting facilities available for commercial letting.

At the end of each tour, the Provincial Rulers and Brethren were on hand to answer any questions that visitors posed and made literature available to take away for those who sought further information.

OPEN DAY

Media and press coverage was by BBC Radio Leicester, who had previously transmitted an interview with RW Bro. David Hagger – PGM and the local regional press (Leicester Mercury) attended on the day, who subsequently published a centre fold spread of 8 colour photographs – entitled “Rare glimpse inside the home of the Freemasons”.

A number of local interest/visitor websites were populated with details of the planned event.

An evaluation report is being compiled to capture what went well and what else to consider and to create a template for future such events The Provincial Grand Master R W Bro. David Hagger said “I felt very proud as Provincial Grand Master of the marvellous efforts made by so many Brethren and ladies in making this event the most successful ever in informing the public of what we do, aim to be and our place in the local community”.

A visitor exit poll was conducted which confirmed that all found the visit very enjoyable and informative with:•

25 individuals expressing an interest in joining Freemasonry as a direct result of the visit

21 individuals interested in more information of the banqueting/meeting facilities

•

12 individuals requested more information on the charitable local support that Freemasons had given.

DEVONSHIRE COURT

Celebrating the Queen’s All Four DIAMOND JUBILEE Degrees On Monday the 4th June the Residents of Devonshire Court celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in great style.

T

he staff at the home had laid out the lounge as a traditional street party with all the Union Flags you could ever wish to see. The festivities got off to a rousing start with the room full of residents and staff, together with family and friends singing the National Anthem.

The residents many dressed in red, white, and blue, and wearing their Union Flag hats enjoyed the excellent traditional layout of sandwiches, cakes washed down with lashings of lemonade.

All the residents who attended the party enjoyed the festive atmosphere many remembering the times they had shared with the Queen and the moments when the nation had been put to the test by the Nazi War machine.

One lady having survived the London Blitz, another saying that she had been married during the raids on Sheffield, and another telling of her time as an ambulance driver at the time Coventry burned. There was also an old sailor who had served in the Royal Navy on the North Atlantic Convoys.

Each in their own way along with all the other revellers demonstrated that National Pride that had been engendered by the Jubilee.

The residents of Devonshire Court were recently entertained with a full afternoon of ‘Music and Song’ given

by St John’s Lodge (279) and The Chapter of Fortitude (279).

The Lodge and Chapter were attached to one another shortly after their founding over 200 years old. This event entitled “All Four Degree’s”, reflects the closeness of the Craft and Royal Arch.

W Bro. David Richardson (shown) regaled in 1760 attire, acted as MC for the afternoon.

W Bro. Dale Roberts – IPM sang a wide range of popular songs, Bill a resident of Devonshire Court played the piano E Comp. Ian Needham – MEZ, conducting a 17 piece ensemble.

A quiz and raffle were included with a full afternoon ‘High Tea’ for the approx.

50 residents attending.

This social event, run on similar lines to last years is hoped to become an annual function.

t each meeting, different regalia is taken in and explained and questions responded to. In doing so, the residents are given some stimulus in keeping their masonic interests going.

The group are looking for a Lodge to consider sponsoring this activity in keeping them supplied with the usual masonic liquid encouragement... and keep their interest going!

The quiz was in two parts – General Knowledge and then a “Say what flower it is” slide presentation.

A good time was had by all and the horticultural knowledge of the resident competitors was very knowledgeable judging by the number of correct answers!!!

If Readers need any horticultural/gardening information, Devonshire Court is obviously the place to ask, am sure the residents will be pleased to oblige!!

STRAWBERRY TEA Highcross Lodge (4835) provided its annual strawberry tea for the residents of Devonshire Court again on July 14th. This event was well received by all who took part (residents and Lodge members) including one its newest residents (W Bro. Philip Goadby) who recently moved to live there.

The Lodge usually host two occasions at Devonshire Court every year, one being the strawberry tea and the other one, in Nov/Dec when they normally host a band concert.

Queen’s Jubilee Pageant I bet when W Bro. Walter Clegg wrote the words to the opening ode he did not expect four masons of different lodges would be singing it on board a Dunkirk Little ship as they entered the Wash?

ur briefing started at HMS President on Friday 4th May 2012 with all the crews of the Dunkirk Little Ships. Our plan was to set sail the following morning to Harwich. On the first leg of the journey however, the weather conditions stopped us in our tracks.

On Friday 11th May I collected the Crew and we managed a good Steak and a few pints of Abbots Ale in the Ship inn at Fosedyke Bridge. Being good Masons we managed to uncork a few bottles of red wine to help to digest the excellent steaks.

After many months of form filling and briefings we set sail at 0830hrs on the following morning, fuel tanks full and charts plotted, with tea in abundance and breakfast on the go. Even the seals have come to wave us farewell and the sun is shining. A heavy swell for the first six hours puts “Lazy Days” to the test, punching the tide and giving some spray over the bows, proving what a good sturdy ship she is. At just over eleven tons, she handles very well , cruising at a steady 8 knots. The twin Ford engines are like the crew……. relaxed and taking the journey as it comes.

The views of Norfolk are breathtaking and the sea has become calm, so we increase speed to 10 Knots and arrive in Harwich at 0400hrs the following morning.

After a short sleep we refuel and set a course for the river Crouch and Essex Marina. The weather could not be better and “ Lazy Days” is put through her paces. She does stand out against all the Gin Palaces , but in the words of Bro. Paul Gilson…. goes like a MTB. (Motor Torpedo Boat).

Moored up and the crew back on dry land, next week is Leicestershire & Rutland 2012 Banquet so no sailing but back on Masonic duties. A good job as the weather gets typically British and strong winds keep us berthed until Sunday 27th May. Off we go again to pass through the Thames Barrier in a rain storm Noah would be proud of. Entering the docks at 1615hrs to be the first little ship to arrive.

Margaret and I now have time to see the sites and see old friends and make new ones.

MASONIC NEWS

Inspections underway to make sure this 82 year old is worthy to participate in this great event. From engines to electrics, to divers checking the hull, “Lazy Days” passed with flying colours.

Even the Skipper scraped through after filling in the passage plan and risk assessment! Don’t ask?

Great news was given to me by John Tough (ADLS Archivist) and grandson of Robert Tough who in 1940 mustered the Little Ships on the Thames (not yet a mason) but we still have time, “Lazy Days” was the only Dunkirk Little Ship present that took part in the Coronation Pageant in 1953, the Skipper at that time being Mr F.E. Pearce Esq. , who owned her from 1949-1957.

The Day was outstanding with my Crew and 2 youngest Granddaughters on board, and being the only vessel to fly the Square & Compasses (made by Mandy McGregor) It raised a huge amount of interest from other crews and spectators. It’s a shame the press and commentators missed it, to see Brethren saluting as we sailed down the Thames.

It made me very proud to be part of our Fraternity. My greatest moment was as we dipped our Ensign for her Majesty as we sailed past and to be greeted with a smile that melted the rain and made you proud to be part of this once in a life time tribute to our Queen.

I would love to see more ships fly our flag to show we are proud to be Masons.

“Lazy Days” is now having a long holiday on the Thames and it would be rude of Margaret and I not to join her.

Major Developments at London Road

Library and Museum Is it a library? … or a museum? Actually it’s both!!!!!

The great wealth of literature and artefacts we have in our keeping at Freemasons` Hall – Leicester, is one of the richest in the nation, and is really only outshone by the vast store at Great Queen Street in London. We have a virtually unrivalled collection of masonic books and periodicals which are available for study by members of the craft and others interested in the history and development of Freemasonry.

he services of the Curators, led by W Bro. Walter Glover, are there to assist anyone who wishes to read or consult the collection. As we have all been enjoined to make a daily advancement in masonic knowledge it would seem sensible to take advantage of that service?

But maybe the interests of the Brethren are more directed to the artefacts we own v’s that rich and opulent display of glass, pottery, textiles, prints, and jewels, etc, which we have amassed over the years. But herein has lain a problem... how to strike a balance between the needs of the two collections i.e. books need to be accessible and artefacts need to be displayed, and there is not an unlimited amount of space.

Following an initiative by our PGM, R W Bro. David Hagger, developments have taken place which will create a better environment for both parts of the collection, and maybe this is a timely solution as well for there are other additions to our collections for which appropriate space must be found.

The opportunity has been taken to catalogue all the books and the artefact collection and W Bro. David Saunt has been tireless in his efforts in this connection.

The display space in the library and museum has been reconfigured so that there is now much more room to show off artefacts and masonic memorabilia. Thus we are now able to exhibit more of our superb collection of early masonic jewels, many of which had heretofore been kept in drawers. But where have the books gone? … The answer is Room 19, a somewhat little frequented area of the Hall. This had been in use as an overflow and store for the Library and Museum, but it was, even speaking kindly, dingy… dirty and untidy – not at all welcoming.

It has now been cleaned and tidied and houses many of the book series that were only rarely consulted when they were on the book shelves. Thus nothing has been disposed of, and all the literature is still there for consultation, though it may need to be retrieved from Room 19 on a request from a reader.

But there is more to tell! Recent spatial changes at Messrs Toye Kenning and Spencer in Great Queen Street, London, have led the Premier Research Lodge, (Quatuor Coronati), to seek a fresh home for their book collection. It is a tribute to the

regard in which our Province is held in terms of scholarship and research, that “GQS” sought our assistance via the good offices of W Bro. Aubrey Newman who is a member of the Lodge, and a past Prestonian Lecturer. Our Past Provincial Grand Secretary, W Bro. Don Peacock organised the transfer of the books from London to Leicester, and they are now being catalogued by W Bro. Walter Glover, and David Saunt. They will be housed in a separate collection as we hold them on permanent loan, but will be available for reading and consultation, and will undoubtedly add to our wealth of masonic literature.

The other development, which is currently at an embryonic stage is the photographic archive. Freemasonry has been pictured in various artistic media since the early 18th Century, and photography, though not so venerable as engraving, for example, has been about for well over a century and a half.

We have a great collection of photographs of masonic interest, many of them from the latter part of the 19th Century. Some are of individual masons of note, others depict lodges and masonic gatherings. What is more this is a collection which grows greatly by the year as a result of the sterling work of W Bro. Richard Jelly in photographing events such as Provincial Grand Lodge and Provincial Grand Chapter. In the years to come these will be important documentary evidence of how we conducted these occasions. Ephemera become memorabilia!

Yet another home has to be found for the photographic archive, and this is “the flat” yet another rarely frequented part of the Hall, but which lies up a winding stair case accessed via the little door which lies next to the entrance to the Provincial Grand Officers` Robing Room. Health and Safety considerations preclude open access to this space, but we hope to be able to bring material of interest down on a rotating basis so that it may be displayed in the corridors of the Hall and add to the enjoyment of our masonry.

The 2012 Festival was a great success and many thanks to all of you, your partners and friends for your support in making it so. When the result was announced by David Innes (RMBI – CEO) at the 2012 Festival Banquet held at the Leicester City FC Stadium on Saturday 19th May 2012, we had raised £1,680,850 for the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution. We have since then managed from other donations and events to send them another £20,000 making...

... Our Festival having raised £1.7 million ... which exceeded our target by £200,000… a truly magnificent result!

In making his announcement, David Innes quoted the following facts:• •

The average contribution from Craft Lodges in Leicestershire and Rutland was the highly impressive sum of £20,146.

Lodges who produced exceptional contributions were:•

Edward Sherrier Lodge, which raised £37,369, Wiclif Lodge which raised £38,386 and Highcross Lodge which raised the remarkable sum of £40,224.

The Lodges who raised the highest per capita were: – •

Lodge of the Round Table – £674 per member

St Martin’s Lodge – £691 per member

•

Highcross Lodge who achieved a sum of £769 per member

•

The total raised by Craft Lodges, other Orders and Degrees in Leicestershire and Rutland is £1,485,963.

Your Festival President’s List achieved £126,892, which brings the total raised by Leicestershire and Rutland alone, to £1,612,855.

Festival President, to that magnificent sum raised in your Province, there have been third party donations, bringing the grand total for the Leicestershire and Rutland Festival to £1,680,850

he feedback from the Banquet was that most of the 800 people present had a very enjoyable evening. It was only marred by the quality of the catering (which is a concession to an outside company by Leicester City FC) and the Audio Visual System. However, following a meeting by the PGM with the company, they agreed to fully refund the total cost to us. In addition, the Audio Visual Company did not charge us at all for their services. This enabled us to refund ÂŁ47.50 to everyone who bought a ticket.

The entertainment by the Chantrelles was excellent and the speeches fitting for the occasion, with the right amount of humour.

It was lovely to see so many Ladies looking very glamorous. I think it was a fitting tribute that the High Ruler, Jonathan Spence’s wife, said how much she had enjoyed the evening.

New Initiate’s experience On the 10th of March, a candidate (Bro. Stuart Lambert) I proposed, was initiated into the Old Oakhamian Lodge (8033).

We had just had an evening out together where we discussed his Initiation and the follow up material he received from the Provincial Grand Master. Bro. Stuart was full of praise for the personal letter he received and the leaflet that accompanied it. He commented how welcoming it all was. He has read through the material and found it to be of great interest. It answered many questions he had, but also posed others. Something which I feel is very positive.

I am taking him to Enderby Lodge tonight, when he will be able to see an Initiation Ceremony and perhaps answer some of his outstanding questions.

The importance of the Role of the Almoner.

This story clearly demonstrates the very important role played by the Lodge Almoner. A sensitive and thoughtful approach at a very difficult time can assist the bereaved family to deal with something, which is almost certainly the least of their problems at that time, but may just demonstrate our Masonic purpose and support for them as a family. The Almoner’s legacy is to demonstrate that Freemasonry Cares, not just in life but also at difficult times.

As a nation we have proved this summer that we have much to be proud about and created a legacy in which the whole nation can share. Our support for our Brethren and their families is summed up in the words “Freemasonry Cares”. Let that be our Masonic legacy for the future.

A Tale of 2 Masons

(Tony Jeyes & Michel Nemoz) AKB (Tony) Jeyes was born and brought up in Evington and was a member and Past Master of Wyggeston Lodge Tony & I retired to Brittany in 1996 and he greatly missed his Freemasonry, returning each November for the Installation of the new Master and to some Ladies’ festivals. He was adopted by the Lodge as a “foreign “ visitor when he visited the Lodge.

Unfortunately he wasn’t able to pursue his Freemasonry in France as there weren’t any English speaking Lodges in the area.

Sadly Tony died in 2003.

When I met Michel Nemoz a year later, I couldn’t believe he was also a Freemason... what luck (albeit French) Together we investigated starting an English speaking Lodge in Brittany which included needing a Lodge name which was acceptable in French and English and I came up with the name “Beaumont” (which was Tony’s middle name) The Lodge was consecrated in 2008 in Rennes and Michel was its first Master. The Lodge was originally formed of mostly Past Masters, all retired and living in Brittany and the Channel Islands but now has new younger Initiates coming through.

How delighted Tony would have been to have a Lodge named after him!!

Sadly Michel died in October 2011

Medals and Jewels

An Olympic and Masonic Legacy A Message to all Masons and their Families.

A

ll the talk this summer has been about the importance of Medals and the Olympic Legacy. Against that background a rather sad story came to my attention about a Brother in Leicestershire & Rutland and specifically about his Masonic Jewels and Regalia.

Following the Brother’s death his widow was approached by someone offering to buy all his masonic items. A deal was agreed and the person removed everything immediately. Maybe this widow was pleased to have one less task to deal with and was relieved to have the matter swiftly concluded.

However, when it subsequently emerged what had happened, it became clear to a masonic friend of-the fatuity that two things had occurred. Firstly a very low price had been paid and secondly some of the Jewels sold were in reality items that would have been treasured, not for their intrinsic value but for their importance to his Lodges. For example some very fine Past Master’s jewels.

Having heard this very sad story I felt there were three important messages that I would like to share with all Masons and their families.

Ensure you’re Wife and Family are aware of your intentions.

We all need to make our wives and families aware of our intentions concerning our masonic regalia and jewels, after our death. Consider including your wishes in your will. They may not have much value, but if you want to maximise any value we have a Regalia Office in London Road that can advise you and help, please don’t let E-Bay buyers be the beneficiary. Our Regalia Office will be pleased to help and they will make the process simple. You’re legacy may be to help a newer Brother to obtain his regalia at a lower cost.

Jewels may be very important to you’re Lodge.

You may have Founder’s or Past Master’s Jewels which have very special significance to you’re Lodge.

Founders Jewels have historic importance and you may wish to consider having you’re example preserved in the Lodge archives or even in the case of very important ones in the London Road Museum.

Yours very sincerely

Past Master’s Jewels are now very expensive to obtain and many of the older Jewels are irreplaceable because of the detail and quality.

I’m certain that these Jewels would be welcomed by your Lodge and worn with pride by subsequent Past Masters. You’re legacy would be that your year as Worshipful Master would be preserved for all time.

Temperantia Lodge (4088) supports Leicestershire Schoolchildren The Lodge has a link with Stonehill High School in Birstall which is a Designated Speech and Language Centre for Leicestershire children (11-14 year olds) who have severe communication difficulties due to variously linked medical conditions.

T

he Lodge has regularly supported the Unit by running a yearly fund – raising event (Bingo) and on 14th March 2012 presented a cheque for £750 to the Unit.

This money will now enable those children whose parents are unable to totally or partially fund their children to attend a week’s outdoor education course @ Aberglaslyn in October. Such a trip costs £300 per pupil, so the monies handed over will help a fair few individuals to make the trip and benefit from the experiences.

Many of the children will have never been to the countryside or seen a mountain etc and this type of activity helps them to develop themselves as well as their inter personal and communication skills.

This annual Bingo event, which W Bro. Trevor Loydall has organised for the last 10 years has raised over £7,000 pounds over that period.

The Masonic connection is that Lynn Morgan who set up the Unit in 1995 (and has since retired but continues to be very actively involved in the Unit):•

her father was W Bro. John Harrison (PM of Temperantia)

•

her brother is W Bro. Kevin Harrison (PM of Temperantia – 1997).

This funding activity clearly demonstrates a positive activity of how Freemasonry in the Community is directly making a difference to the lives of young Leicestershire children and Temperantia Lodge has committed to continue supporting this in the future.

75 Year Celebration Lodge of Welcome (5664) On Thursday 31st May 2012 the 75th Anniversary Meeting took place in the Holmes Lodge Room by special dispensation, to coincide with the day the Lodge was consecrated.

he Lodge was honoured by the presence of the RW Provincial Grand Master together with the DPGM and the current Provincial Officers.

There were over 150 in attendance with a busy meeting schedule which included:•

Initiation Ceremony for Bro. Clifford Hilder

W Bro. Ken Beesley giving a talk on the Lodge historical highlights over the previous 75 years

•

A commemorative goblet being presented to the Provincial Grand Master by Bro. Neil Henery

•

The PGM then invested the Lodge’s longest serving member, Bro. Roger Beeby with a Provincial Rosette appointment for past services to the Lodge

At the Festive Board afterwards the Toast was proposed by the RW Provincial Grand Master and responded to by W Bro. Alf Sharman and all in attendance were presented with a 28 page illustrated brochure which includes a brief summary of the founding, Consecration and history of the previous 75 years of the Lodge.

For those interested, a copy is available to view in the Provincial Library.

Roundhill Lodge (8639)

Flies again

Roundhill Lodge held its Eyebrook Flyfishing Day in order to raise funds to help purchase another especially adapted Boat for Disabled Anglers who need to use a wheelchair in order that they can better enjoy their hobby.

The day was a great success with 40 Anglers taking part in the “friendly but competitive” event for both Masons & non Masons.

On the day we raised £567 as well as a generous donation of £250 from the Mark Masters Masons. This money combined with monies raised from the Derbyshire FlyFishing Lodge (9347) and St Oswalds Lodge (850) enabled us on the 14th June at Carsington Reservoir for a new boat for the Wheelyboat Trust to be launched.

The competition for “Guess the Weight of the Fish” was won by W Bro. C Payne and J Driver.

2012 Festival Quiz The 2012 Festival Quiz Final was held on Thursday 15th March at London Road when 20 teams took part, in a most enjoyable and fun evening!

As in the past the result was closely fought, the top three teams being separated by 2 points. s 1st place – Wyggeston Stewards scoring 77 points s 2nd place – Temperantia Seconds on 76 points s 3rd place – Howe & Charnwood Hot & Cold with 75 points The winning team were presented the trophy by the PGM who thanked everyone for their participation and creating a fun evening.

The PGMs own team (The Very Rough Ashlars) improved for the 2nd year in succession coming in at 16th place. Maybe next year?

The event raised £400 for the 2012 Festival which just shows that you can raise money with a smile!

Provincial Year Book Update Most Brethren will now be in possession of their new “2012 Yearbook” which has been designed to respond to comments/ suggestions raised by Brethren.

Some Provinces are trialling “Web” Yearbooks, and this is already being worked on by the Registrar’s team so … further improvements are on the horizon.

It is thinner – therefore less bulky; its less substantial – therefore cheaper; it has more information for those who wish to delve, and of course there is now the alternative dynamic CD…lighter, faster, cheaper…but you need to carry a lap-top around to use it!

However we can only reproduce what information we hold – so if you find any errors please inform your Secretary of changes concerning you (or of course to us direct) so that we can strive to be up to date and correct.

Leicestershire & Rutland are at the forefront of Provinces in producing a Year Book CD, and the information provided in either format is more comprehensive than most Provinces?

Message from the PGM

Leics & Rutland Masonic Bowling Association

I am launching an appeal to the Brethren who meet here at London Road for their support in raising monies to install a lift.

T

he Present access for disabled people and those who find difficulties in climbing stairs is totally inadequate and in many respects demeaning. No one should be excluded from this building or their Lodges because of difficulties of access. In addition, I would like to be able to install a lift in our own time rather than it being demanded by a Statutory Authority. Planning Permission has been obtained for the installation of a lift which will travel from the car park, right up to the Morley, Oliver and St John Corah Lodge rooms. In addition, it will give better access at first floor level to the library and museum and the chair lift to the Holmes Lodge Room will be replaced by a further lift to the Holmes Ante Room.

I commissioned W Bro. Philip Dodd of Architects LE1 to prepare the plans, to obtain Planning Permission and Listed Building Consent, to obtain quotations for the installation of the Lift, and also to submit tender documents for the building work. Quotations from various lift companies and tenders from three building companies have been received and are being evaluated. I will exhibit the plans in due course and also the sum to be raised. I have arranged a close down period of 5 weeks in June and July next year for the work to be carried out.

I shall therefore be asking for the help of Lodges and Brethren meeting at Leicester in raising the amount required. I believe that this is a project long overdue and it was in fact first proposed in 1968 when the Morley extension was built. We were all very successful in raising money for the 2012 Festival for the RMBI. Now is our opportunity to help our Brethren and visitors in gaining access to our wonderful headquarters. I look forward to your help.

2011-12 SEASON UPDATE This season has probably been the worst on record…. weather wise!! but on the green….as successful and enjoyable as ever, with the:•

Domestic Pairs competition for the magnificent Samson Smith Trophy

•

Annual inter-Provincial competition (between Leics & Rutland, Northants & Hunts and Notts) for the Sidney Brown Trophy.

O

ur usual start for the season was due on the 2nd May against Northants & Hunts but was rained off, to be replayed later in the summer. Next up was the Annual Pairs competition in July which was blessed with fine weather and our Patron R W Bro. David Hagger (PGM) was on hand to present the trophy to the worthy winners – W Bro. Terry Freer (Gateway Lodge) and Roy Cockett (Humber Stone Lodge).

The Provincial competition resumed shortly afterwards with a good away WIN in Nottingham.. The following week’s game in Wellingborough was rained off again but the weather improved a week later and enabled us to record a VICTORY in the return game against Notts. The cancelled game against Northants & Hunts was resumed on the 5th September with a resounding WIN, thereby enabling us to retain the Sidney Brown Trophy for the SIXTH year in succession.

We were delighted that our Vice Patron Past PGM R W Bro. Michael Roalfe was present to hand the trophy to our President, W Bro. Len Harris (Gateway Lodge). Our grateful thanks go to our Captain, W Bro. Harry Dixon (Halford Lodge) for getting the teams together on all occasions.

The Association is not just about Bowling!!!

Charity is equally important to us and thanks to raffles and generous donations from Lodges, we have over the years raised more than £30,000 for the benefit of many national and local Charities. As in recent years we again anticipate this year being able to donate another £1,000 to Charity.

Night @ the Movies On Thursday 21st June the Tudor Choir, under the direction of Judy Dodd performed a musical evening entitled “A Night at the Movies”. The event, organised by Phil and Judy Dodd, raised £1,000 which will be donated to the PGM’s appeal for a “lift”, at London Road, which will be launched in September 2012.

Our AGM will be on 7th December 2012 which our members and fellow Bowlers will be welcome to attend. If you Bowl and would like to be involved in Masonic Bowling please contact the Association (details in the Year Book).

Grand Chapter 2012 On Thursday 22nd March the Annual Convocation of Provincial Grand Chapter was held at Freemasons’ Hall, London Road.

Comp. Peter Kinder (MEGS) thanked E Comp. James Buckle for his huge and dedicated contribution to Royal Arch Masonry whilst serving as 2nd Provincial Grand Principal and then took great pleasure in investing his Provincial Scribe E, E. Comp. John Townsend as his new 2nd Provincial Grand Principal.

The MEGS then thanked E. Comp. Noel Manby for holding the office of 3rd Provincial Grand Principal over the past 12 months and the help he had given in that time. The Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies, E. Comp.

Gerry Thurgar, was then installed as 3rd Provincial Grand Principal.

E Comp. James Williamson was re-appointed as Deputy Grand Superintendent.

The MEGS then proceeded to invest all those Companions who had been Appointed and Promoted. Two of the most notable being, E Comp. Paul Wallace as Provincial Scribe E and E Comp. Jonathan Varley as Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies.

Hedley Kendall celebrates 50 years in the RA Thursday 15th March was a special day for the Vale of Catmos Chapter and E Comp. Hedley Kendall as it was the occasion when E Comp. Hedley was presented with a certificate commemorating his 50 years membership in the Royal Arch.

Comp. Jim Williamson (Deputy Grand Superintendent as well as member of the Chapter) was on hand to make the presentation. After some general remarks about Hedley’s contribution to Freemasonry in Melton Mowbray in general and the Royal Arch in particular, the citation set out in a Certificate was read out by E Comp. John Townsend, the Provincial Grand Scribe E.

Stan Harriman’s 50 years of Royal Arch

On Tuesday 21st February 2012 the MEGS, E Comp. Peter Kinder, accompanied by his Deputy, the 2nd and 3rd Principals and nearly all the active officers of Provincial Grand Chapter made an official visit to Charnwood Chapter @ Loughborough to celebrate the wonderful occasion when the MEGS presented E Comp. Stanley Harriman with a certificate to mark his 50 years service to Royal Arch Masonry.

Stan’s invaluable service to RA Masonry during his 50 years membership and the example he had set.

At the same meeting, Charnwood Chapter also welcomed Bro. Kenneth John Wainwright into our wonderful order when he was exalted into Royal Arch Masonry.

Annual Buffet On Tuesday 12th June 2012 the MEGS, Peter Kinder and his wife Sandie, hosted the annual Royal Arch Buffet.

nce again the event was attended by most of the active Provincial officers, many Grand officers and those Companions who had assisted the RA executive throughout the year.

Following an excellent sit down buffet, entertainment was provided by the Tudor Choir under the direction of Judy Dodd. The MEGS then presented a cheque to Philip Dodd which was donated to LOROS.

ROYAL ARCH MATTERS KT DEMO

KT Demonstration A demonstration of an 1825 English Knight Templar Ceremony as described

by Richard Carlile (a free speech & press advocate of the time as well as the Author of the expose “Manual of Freemasonry” which is still in print today!) was performed by the Thespian Knights of Hampshire & the Isle of Wight at the Masonic Centre Loughborough on Saturday 5th May 2012.

T

his demonstration was first delivered by them at the KT Triennal International Conference at Winchester in 2009. The Thespian Knights travel and deliver this demonstration throughout the country at their own cost with proceeds being donated to the Eye Hospital in Jerusalem.

The event was hosted by the Provincial Prior RE Knight David Walters and attended by Knights from Leicestershire and Rutland as well as many visitors from neighbouring Provinces.

The event was held at a special meeting of the Sir Babington Preceptory (410), hosted by the Provincial RE Knight David J Walters and attended by Knights Leicestershire and Rutland as well as many visitors neighbouring Provinces.

The “candidate” was Leicestershire’s Bro. Kt Neil Gobby who had recently joined the Order in Loughborough.

The prologue was set in the time of Carlile’s imprisonment in 1830. The opening/closing ceremony itself is deemed to be “craft orientated” with scripture readings aligned to the Order of the Red Cross of Constantine.

The regalia worn by the Thespians was reflective of the mode of dress of the day, with elements of Craft and KT obviously apparent but others not so!!

•

A summer luncheon took place after the meeting at which an enjoyable time was had by all.

•

A collection was taken on the day and donated to the Thespian Knights, which will allow them to continue their demonstration work and supporting the Eye Hospital in Jerusalem.

energy and the FIT is the incentive.

There is no con, it’s as simple as that.

The average cost for a 4kWp system is around £7,850.00. If you have money in the bank or in an ISA it will not give you the tax free rate of return a PV system will guaranteed for 20 years, that’s without the free electricity. It is like buying a mini business for your home; within 7 years it has paid for itself so for the following 13 years it’s all paid for, earning you money and generating electricity. So in my opinion with increasing energy costs Solar PV is a real ‘no-brainer’ to invest in.
