Welcome

ust 2012

Well here we are again with another issue (27) of your Provincial newsletter. The feedback from readers on issue 26 was most encouraging & we hope that you find this one as interesting and enjoyable? Readership appears to be expanding as we have had requests to use one of our stories (Museum Table) in a commercially run Masonic magazine, as well as a family member of a deceased Brother requesting continuation of supply. A copy of LSq is available on the Provincial website (www.pglleics.org.uk) and if you need additional copies please contact the Prov G Sec office where they can be picked up, as well as a copy is lodged with the Museum/Library at London Road. In the last issue, I made reference to the fact that the LSq team was working on making the magazine pay for itself rather than be funded by the Province. I am delighted to report that issue 26 sales revenue from advertisers, exceeded our print/publishing costs & thereby producing a surplus and in doing so are now able to contribute to the Provincial accounts. We have agreed that we would not want to go down the road of so many publications where the adverts far exceed the stories so will cap the adverts:stories ratio to 25%:75%.

A number of thanks are due to:-

PGM ADDRESS

PGM Address Brethren How time flies. It does not seem a year since I last addressed you at Provincial Grand Lodge and much has happened in the meantime as you all know. May I extend a further welcome to our many distinguished visitors and also our Heads of Orders and thank them for their attendance this evening. I and my Provincial Executive team have enjoyed our visits to other Provinces in the last year and long may these reciprocal visits continue, particularly important being our visits to member Provinces of the Rulers’ Forum Group No 6 with whom we have our group meetings every 6 months here at London Road. I think they appreciate the lunch more than anything else. Thank you to our Brethren for their support this evening even in these dire financial times. It is a great encouragement to myself, my Executive Team and Provincial Officers that so many attend.

2012 Festival May I first advise you of the progress of the 2012 Festival for the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution and I am particularly pleased to welcome W Bro. James Newman (Chairman of the Trustees) and W Bro. Peter Williams (External Affairs Officer). I reported last year on its progress and I am delighted to say that the fund now exceeds ÂŁ1.45 million and so the target of ÂŁ1.5 million is well within our grasp. I trust that none of us take our foot off the pedal and that we achieve the best possible result for such a wonderful charity that supports our Brethren and their dependents so well. As I mentioned the economic climate is bleak and we are all affected by it, so it is even more to your credit Brethren and your wives/partners and families that

6 | Leicester Square | Spring 2012

you have joined in the fun of fundraising. A large number of our older Brethren and their wives and dependents will have cause to be grateful for your generosity both now and for generations to come. The Festival Banquet takes place on the 19th May 2012 at the King Power Stadium, formerly known as The Walkers Stadium. Brethren I am now dealing with my third or fourth General Manager since I first booked the event and what with Sven Goran Erickson getting the sack; honestly Brethren it is nothing to do with me We still have seats available at the Banquet for you to attend with your partner. I encourage you all to do so. It will be a happy and enjoyable evening, the climax to 5 years of hard work by very many Brethren and their ladies.

PGM ADDRESS

Leicestershire and Rutland Masonic Charity Association This has been a tremendous year for the Association as we have been able to help many non-Masonic Charities throughout our Province and indeed many Brethren and their dependents. The Charity Cheque presentation mornings have continued very successfully. This year I have encouraged Lodges to attend and either present their own Lodge cheques to Charities or to nominate Charities that they wish the Province to support. It has been well supported and everyone finds it a very moving occasion, especially when a representative of the Charity explains their work. This Country is blessed with so many volunteers helping people less fortunate then ourselves. On our visit to your Lodge, my Executive Team and I have told the Brethren present of the local non-Masonic Charities and the National Masonic Charities that we have supported during the last year. It is important that you know that during the last year, Brethren and their dependents in this Province have benefited from the National Charities to the extent of £310,000 whether in our Masonic Home at Devonshire Court, help with the education of children or medical care which the National Health Service cannot provide at all or within a reasonable time period. I launched the Freemasonry Cares Initiative last year and this has been tremendously successful with 26 applications direct to the National Charities. The Widows, along with a copy of Leicester Square, received further details of the Initiative and yesterday I received a letter from a widow thanking the Brethren whose charity have looked after her since her husband died, advising me that she is now 84 years old, in reasonable health and she has a greyhound which makes her walk in all weathers, which is what the doctor ordered. It makes me proud to be a Freemason. When I write to each Initiate, congratulating them on joining our wonderful society, I send them a copy of the Freemasonry Cares Booklet. The more our Brethren and particularly their ladies are aware of what help is available, the better. I am indeed grateful to my Provincial Grand Charity Steward W Bro. Anthony Molyneux and our Provincial Grand Almoner W Bro. Frank Nichol for their tremendous help to all our Brethren and their families. One of the most successful initiatives this year has been our support to LOROS (our local Hospice) in paying for the re-erection of the Therapeutic Garden (Silver medal winner at the Hampton Court Show) back at LOROS, to be enjoyed by the patients and their families. The work of our National Charities and our Provincial Charity is a marvellous example of “Freemasonry in the Community”.

Membership I said last year that 2010 had been a disappointing year for Membership within the Province and to this end I had invited the Assistant Provincial Grand Master to form a 3R’s Committee to examine all aspects of Recruitment, Retention and Retrieval. This Committee had members ranging from a Senior Grand Officer to Fellowcrafts. This Committee have now submitted their report and I must say that I agree with almost all their suggestions and conclusions and I intend to send to every Brother in this Province a précis of their report. I know that there is reluctance with some Brethren and within some Lodges to change. We do have to consider those Brethren who are still working by opening Lodges not earlier than 6.00pm or even later. We do have to consider those Brethren who perhaps from circumstances of old age, sickness or pressures of work, who cannot attend Lodge on every occasion, by circulating the minutes. We do have to consider those Brethren who advance to the Chair ever quicker nowadays and want to be involved in the work of the Lodge, perhaps by limiting every office to a five or six year tenure. By having the Lodge Mentor as a coordinator and in assigning a mentor to each and every Brother. There is so much we can do to facilitate attendance and maintain interest. Our Provincial membership has decreased by only 1 this year. Perhaps these suggestions and others in the pipeline are bearing fruit. We will be holding an Open Day here on 9th June this year. Please come and bring your wives, families and friends.

PGM ADDRESS

Devonshire Court and the Association of Friends My Executive Team and I have continued to stress the importance of our support to the Home and in particular the way that you Brethren can give so much pleasure to the residents by organising and attending social events for them. The minimum donation of £2 each from every Brother in our Province for the Association of Friends has fallen somewhat in the past year. To emphasise the commitment of my Executive Team, my Deputy and Assistant Provincial Grand Masters have joined the Committee of Friends, to promote the link between the Province, the Friends and most importantly the residents and the staff of Devonshire Court.

Mentoring I mentioned Mentoring. This evening I appointed W Bro. Ken Wylie as Provincial Grand Mentor in place of W Bro. Ian Johnson who has now become Provincial Grand Treasurer. Brother Wylie is very experienced in undertaking and organising mentoring for the Magistrates Courts Association and Tesco. I suppose every little helps. Brother Wylie is organising a Mentoring Conference on 29th February 2012 to explain the work of the Lodge Mentor Co-Ordinator and the qualifications for that Office. In addition, we are publishing free booklets for the Initiate, Fellow craft and Master Mason and also a booklet entitled “Information for a Prospective Member”. The work of the Mentor both at Provincial and Lodge level is crucial to our well-being as a Province.

Universities Scheme During the last year, two Lodges have joined the Scheme being The Lodge of Science and Art (8429) for Loughborough University and The Wyggeston Lodge (3448) for Leicester University. It is early days to judge whether these Lodges will attract student members. The Wyggeston Lodge had a stall paid for by the Province at the Fresher’s Day for Leicester University and handed out over 750 leaflets. Members of both Lodges attended with both myself and the Assistant Provincial Grand Master at a Universities Scheme Conference held at Grand Lodge in October which we all found very interesting. I have now received an email that two Leicester University Students have applied to join Wyggeston Lodge and that a further post graduate student is to be initiated into Science and Art. I hope to report on further progress next year but this is quite pleasing.

Library and Museum Brethren I mention yet again that “Jewel in the Crown”, our Provincial Library and Museum here at London Road. I have introduced various initiatives with the assistance of W Bro. Walter Glover the Honorary Librarian and Curator, the Librarians W Bro. Danny McKeown and W Bro. David Saunt, the Administrator W Bro. Donald Peacock. We have continued to purchase items including the magnificent Italian Marble Table which takes pride of place in the Library and Museum. We have also produced a booklet which we will be sending to many local associations and clubs inviting tours of this building and in particular the Library and Museum followed by lunch if required. In addition we have created a new archives area and Lodges can deposit free of charge their records in purpose built security boxes with the guidance and help of W Bro. Aubrey Newman the Provincial Archivist and his Deputy W Bro. David Hughes. Brethren we owe a deep sense of gratitude to these Brethren for the work they undertake. Please support them.

Liaison Officers As you are aware, I feel that the role of the Lodge Liaison Officer is crucial, being the link between the Province and the Lodges and I have carried out a major restructuring of the role which has been set out in both letters to the Liaison Officer and the Secretary of each Lodge. I trust that Lodge Secretaries have sent a copy of that letter explaining that role to every Lodge member. In the future a Liaison Officer will only be responsible for one Lodge and that Office has now been extended to Provincial Grand Officers throughout the Province. They will be expected to attend each Lodge at their own expense on two occasions per year and report to me on their visits. I know Brethren that as in the past you will make them welcome in your Lodges.

PGM ADDRESS

I wish to conclude by expressing my personal thanks to so many Brethren who give of their time, within this Province at our various centres. Recently at Hinckley a major extension has taken place and I am attending in December at the Knights of Malta Lodge No. 50 with my Provincial Executive where the Provincial Grand Chaplain will undertake an act of dedication. I understand other Centres are considering schemes of refurbishments and improvements and of course we continue with the work of maintaining and improving our facilities here at London Road on a daily basis. Brethren we have an obligation not only to our present Brethren but also to the future generations of Masons. My thanks go to all those members of the Charity Office, the Yearbook Office, the Registrar’s Office, the Custodians, to my Provincial Grand Supt of Works W Bro. Craig Beatson who despite being unwell has assisted me about Health and Safety Issues when ever asked, My thanks to the newly formed Publicity Committee under the Chairmanship of W Bro. Jim Williamson which has managed to publish Leicester Square for the first time with the aid of advertising and make a profit. To W Bro. Martin Waddington who acts as minute taker for all our meetings and seems to make some sense out of what is said. To W Bro. Harry Dalby, W Bro. David Tiernan, W Bro. Kevin Harrison and W Bro. Mark Pierpoint who have made generous donations of materials for the refurbishment of this building. To W Bro. Derek Andrews for his unfailing help in the day to day management of our Computer Systems. If any Brother is able to help Derek then this would be greatly appreciated. To the Hall Manager W Bro. John Mitton who I appointed last year, who does an incredible amount of work with our Maintenance Man David Hardy in keeping this building open and functioning? Well Done! Yet again to W Bro. Brian Carruthers the Finance Director of both Freemasons Hall and Devonshire Place for all the work he does protecting our Finances. To John Stew the Catering Manager, David Muir the Head Chef and the other Chefs and all the Catering Staff who serve us so well. To Nicola, Carly and Elaine

at Devonshire Court in these difficult times for all businesses, particularly those engaged in banqueting and conferences, to continue to enable us to keep our costs down and improve our wonderful building. Last year I appointed W Bro. Anthony Wood as Provincial Grand Secretary. Brother Anthony may I publically thank you for your tremendous work. You are here every weekday, most days all day and never complain, at least not in my hearing. To the Secretariat and to our new Secretary Sandy Tanna thank you for your splendid work and your arrangements for this evening. Likewise to my Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies W Bro. Noel Manby, the Deputy and Assistant Provincial Grand Directors of Ceremonies and all the Provincial Grand Stewards, my thanks for the smooth running of the Ceremony. Brethren throughout this Province give generously of their time. Brethren please be mindful of their commitments when you dilly dally in response to letters and invitations. If I have missed thanking anyone, please accept my humble apologies. Brethren enjoy your Freemasonry. Thank you for your kindness and support.

2012 FESTIVAL FESTIVAL UPDATE

RMBI

2012

Festival Update This will be the last update I write before the Festival Banquet, at which the final figure of the 2012 Festival for the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution is declared.

The Banquet at the King Power Stadium on Saturday 19th May is the celebration of all the effort that has been made by Lodges, Brethren, their partners and families to enable us to reach our target of £1.5 million. There are still a large number of places available to enable you to join us and at the very reasonable price of £54 for a 3-course meal plus tea or coffee, pre-dinner drinks and half a bottle of wine per person, it represents very good value for money. An application form is included in the envelope with this mailing. If you wish to complete the night by staying in the City we have arranged discounted luxury accommodation at the Marriott Hotel Grove Park at a Bed & Breakfast rate of £90.00 per room. If you wish to book please do so before 19th April to secure this rate by phoning 0116 2820100 select option 1 and then option 1, state the date and quote code RUT The money raised by our 2012 Festival goes towards the £4 million per year, which it costs the RMBI to keep people in their 17 homes where there is a fee shortfall. So as you can see if we only make our target this still leaves the RMBI with a deficit of £2.5 million. Therefore, anything we can donate over our £1.5 million target greatly assists the RMBI and their residents. I need to give the RMBI the final figures of Lodge donations by Monday 16th April so they can be published in the Festival results booklet, which will be given out at the Banquet immediately after the final figure has been announced. Can I please therefore ask you to get any Lodge or individual donations, part filled Smarties tubes or any other monies into the Charity Office by the 31st March. Of course, if any donations are received afterwards they will still be credited to the Lodge or Brother.

10 | Leicester Square | Spring 2012

Finally a very big thank you to all who have helped to make our 2012 Festival a success. The Provincial Grand Master, as President of the Festival, and I look forward to seeing you on May 19th at the Banquet.

John Peberdy 2012 Festival Chairman

UNIVERSITY SCHEME

Wyggeston Lodge (3448) attends Freshers’ Fair at the University of Leicester Since joining the Universities’ Scheme in April 2011, the Wyggeston Lodge (3448) has focussed on recruiting students from the University of Leicester. The principle aim has been to engage students and promote Freemasonry and they have already established preliminary links with both the Medicine and Law Societies. However, the main strategy has been the unprecedented attendance at the recent Freshers’ Fair held on 3rd October 2011, which was kindly supported by the Provincial Grand Master, R W Bro. David Hagger. Members of the Lodge, W Bro. Andy Green, W Bro. Kelvin Johnson, and Bro. Jamie Mollart, manned a stall promoting both Freemasonry and the Wyggeston Lodge to students. The day began with hoards of students queuing to enter the hall keen to join societies and pick up the freebies from commercial companies. The number of students hardly abated throughout the day and they successfully handed out information leaflets on Freemasonry, the Province and the Lodge to over 650 male students. During the day, the Assistant Provincial Grand Master W Bro. Peter Kinder, who is also the Provincial Universities’ Scheme Liaison Officer, kindly assisted the members of Wyggeston Lodge by talking with students and handing out information leaflets. The response from students was very positive and encouraging. There was a great deal of interest particularly from students who already had family Masonic

connections and by the end of the day, a total of 12 students were extremely keen to find out more about Freemasonry. In the days following the Fair, several students contacted the Lodge via the newly updated Lodge website (www.wyggestonLodge.org. uk) requesting further information

about joining. Following subsequent meetings with the Lodge members, they are thrilled to be initiating their first University of Leicester student, a 28 year old medical student, at their Lodge meeting in January 2012. This will be followed by a further initiation ceremony for an Undergraduate Banking and Finance student in February.

At a recent meeting of the Lodge a very notable event took place. A Brazilian candidate and a Russian candidate received the third degree together. The DC who masterminded the ceremony and acted as SDeacon on the night was W Bro. David Brown, who has the distinction of holding the rank of PPJGW in Leics & Rutland, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. He has also been presented with a Certificate for 50 years in Masonry in each of these Provinces. The photo shows, l - r, W Bro. David Brown, Bro. Jonathan MarquesMaycock, WM, Digby Lund, Bro. It is of interest to note that W Bro. Brown was also Initiated, in a double ceremony, whilst an undergraduate in dentistry, in King’s College Hospital Lodge

Since joining the UGLE Universities’ Scheme in April 2011, the Wyggeston Lodge, (3448) meeting in the Province of Leicestershire and Rutland has been responsible for forging links with students from the University of Leicester. In October 2011, members of the Lodge and the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, W Bro. Peter Kinder, attended the Freshers’ Fair at the University of Leicester promoting Freemasonry to students. The Universities’ Scheme Subcommittee Chairman, W Bro. Andy Green reports ‘The response from students was very positive and there was a great deal of interest particularly from those who already have family Masonic connections. In the days following the fair, we had several students contact the lodge requesting further information about joining.’ As a direct result, we are now pleased to announce that we have initiated our first University of Leicester student into the Wyggeston Lodge at our regular meeting in January 2012. Bro. Tom Wood is a 2nd year medical student at the University of Leicester and was initiated by the Master, W Bro. Thomas Bodycot. Bro. Tom joins another student in the lodge, Bro. Alex Pohl, who was initiated in December 2011. Bro. Alex is currently studying at Leicester College and intending to study Law at the University of Leicester later this year.

CHARITY NEWS

The Work of

Lodge Charities for Brethren in this Province Much has been made of the support that the Masonic Central Charities and the Leicestershire and Rutland Masonic Charity Association (LRMCA) give to non Masonic Charities. But what are the Charities doing for our Brethren, their widows and their families? This is the question which was recently posed to the Provincial Grand Almoner, Frank Nichol. His answer is set out below.. Last year Grand Charity provided £64,000 for the support of 25 Brethren, former Brethren and dependents. In the same period, the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution(RMBI) supported 34 individuals from Leicestershire and Rutland in Masonic Homes, provided respite care for 15 and in total spent some £109,000 in support of Leicestershire and Rutland Brethren and dependents in care. The Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys(RMTBG) supported at a cost of £106,000, 16 children, including one under the Talent Aid scheme and the Masonic Samaritan Fund (MSF) assisted 8 Brethren and Dependents with private medical treatment at a cost of £32,000 The Central Charities are not always able to help or able to make a quick decision. Hence an emergency grant system is operated by the LRMCA

and financial help provided where appropriate. In the last year funds have been provided to a widow to pay for her husband’s funeral. In another case LRMCA arranged for and funded some essential repairs to a widow’s home with a back door and some windows replaced. Recently a disabled Child (the grandson of a brother) was provided with an adapted tricycle and another brother with MS had his bathroom adapted to meet his needs. The Provincial Grand Almoner has set out a very positive response for what the Charities are doing to help the Brethren, their families and widows of this Province. It is his wish to encourage all Brethren, where a need has been identified, to seek his guidance and support or that of your Lodge Almoner.

Provincial Wardens At Provincial Grand Lodge last November, the Provincial Grand Master appointed W Bro. Peter Green as Provincial Senior Grand Warden and W Bro. Stephen Davison as Provincial Junior Grand Warden. Both Wardens have already commenced their duties representing the Province at Installation ceremonies and are enjoying the opportunity of meeting and speaking with as many of the members of the different Lodges which they will visit throughout the year.

In addition the Provincial Grand Master received a cheque for £1,100 raised by the Golfing Association towards the 2012 Festival from W Bros Stewart Dent, Terry Watts and Malcolm Riddle. The Charity Association is grateful for the support given to the morning’s presentation and in particular to the generous donations made to LRMCA by the Brethren without whom the Province would not be able to provide assistance to so many local charities. All the Charities present have written letters expressing their grateful appreciation for the support provided and it greatly enhances the Image of Masonry in the local community.

R W Bro. David Hagger, presented a cheque to the Caudwell Childrens’ Charity which helped towards the medical operation and treatment in America for Thomas (blue T-shirt). Thomas had only 5 weeks before undergone surgery in America and prior to his operation was nearly doubled over and unable to walk properly. He is now walking totally unaided and upright. He was accompanied by his dad, David Hughes (white T shirt) and accepted the cheque on behalf of the Caudwell Charity from the Provincial Grand Master.

MASONIC NEWS

This year has indeed been an even busier year for W Bro. Michael Herbert On the 13th September 2011, he was invested as the R W Deputy Grand Master of the Mark degree. A full coach of Mark Master Masons led by R W Bro. Tony Morris (Mark Provincial Grand Master for Leics & Rutland), left from Syston to support him at Great Queen Street It was an enjoyable and memorable day out not only for him but for those that supported him from Leics & Rutland.

As a consolation ‌.he did step down after 15 years service as the Grand Master of the Order of the Allied Masonic Degrees. W Bro. Michael is held in the highest esteem by all that meet him, as he always sets the best example to all about him and always has a kind word for everyone that he comes into contact with. We wish him every success in his new offices of responsibility. A truly remarkable man.

Devonshire Court Xmas

The Christmas Fayre this year was a great success. The P.G.M, D.P.G.M. and the A.P.G.M. along with the Dep. Grand Master of the Mark Degree showed the level of support that the Province wishes to give to our wonderful care home. It was very pleasing to see so many families enjoying the occasion along with many of the residents. All the stalls reported did very well and the home will certainly put the proceeds which was in excess of £2000.00 to good use.

Quiz..

The residents of Devonshire Court and a number of visitors attended a very enjoyable quiz organized by W Bro. Michael Robinson on behalf of the Wiclif Lodge (3078) and supported by a number of members of that Lodge and their ladies. This was held on Saturday 12th November

Madame La Guillotine –

the Masonic Connection

Do you drop a tear of sympathy for poor Sidney Carton as he does his “far, far better thing?” Or maybe your patriotic blood courses as Sir Percy Blakeney aka “The Scarlet Pimpernel” rescues another “aristo” from that appalling Frenchie, Citizen Chauvelin. In either case you may have a picture in your mind of “Madame” as the quintessential Gallic killing machine.... but you would be wrong. Who invented “Le Rasoir National?” Actually it was us Anglo-Saxons, and in Halifax, where one was recorded in 1286, and where a replica stands to this day. Ireland had a similar device by 1307 and Scotland by 1564. So how come the French and Masonic connections? Joseph-Ignace Guillotin was a physician from south western France who became a Deputy in the post revolutionary assembly of the French Republic. He suggested in 1789 that there should be a single form of execution for all those convicted of capital crimes including, sadly, those on the wrong side of the uprising. This was to replace a number of particularly horrific means of execution then in use, so Dr. Guillotin seems to have been motivated somewhat humanely. He claimed “ma machine”, which he based on “trans-manche” models which would cut off someone’s head so quickly they would not feel a thing, and that quip led to the penning of a satirical song in which a new name was coined ”La Guillotine.” In 1791 the French State took up the doctor’s proposals and he was summoned to elaborate them, much to his horror as he did not want the associated notoriety. But it was too late, the first prototype was built in 1792, somewhat ironically by an emigre Prussian Harpsichord maker living in Paris, Tobias Schmidt. Though the first victim was a robber named Pelletier, “Madame” was soon at the forefront of the “Terror” in France when many were executed on the basis of trumped up charges. Guillotin himself only narrowly escaped death after being accused of having Royalist sympathies. He withdrew from public life thereafter and lived until 1814. Unfortunately for him the name “Guillotine” and the associated verb, “Guillotiner” passed into the French language, and remain there today though France no longer has the death penalty. And the Masonic connection? Dr Guillotin was a Mason, as indeed were quite a number of those involved in the early stages of the French Revolution. What is more we have a French Masonic Certificate bearing his name, one of the most celebrated, if somewhat unjustly so, in the history of crime and punishment. So why not come along to view it in the Museum at London Road, and there drop your tear of sympathy perhaps not for Sidney Carton but for Bro. Joseph-Ignace Guillotin a humanitarian Mason whose name has been misused by his countrymen.

Worshipful Master

with a Challenge As Secretary of Uppingham in Rutland Lodge (9119), I recently chatted to our current Master, Alec Crombie, and felt I would like to share some of our exchanges with your Readers.

gloves on. W Bro. John Goldsmith IPM suggested reasonably that I might cut a small hole in the index finger of the glove, but when the Lady Wife pointed out that I was not going to ruin a perfectly good pair of faithfully washed gloves, I resolved on memorising the agenda. I think it’s called “Making a virtue out of necessity ”

TF Alec, you came into Masonry 10 years ago. How have you found that experience, both in general and as a totally blind person?

TF Have there been any lighter moments?

AC The answer really is the same in both cases. Ritual aside, the most compelling and abiding feature has been the fellowship and support of the Brethren, starting with my Proposer, W Bro. Freddy Price, right through to everyone with whom I’ve come into contact in our Lodge and also when visiting. TF All the same, it must have been a bit of a challenge? AC Of course you’re right. Precision and discipline are fundamental, and I’m not about to say that I’ve always got it a hundred per cent correct. But I’m used to challenges, and this one has certainly been worth the effort. TF As we speak you’re two thirds of the way through the WM’s Year, and coming up to your first Initiation ceremony. I’m bound to ask you this, how will you feel about the symbolism central to this Degree? AC Oh, quite okay. The force of the allegory underpins so much that we believe in. If I can help to illustrate the Blessing of Light, then so much the better. TF Brethren might be interested to hear of any practical difficulty you’ve encountered while in the Chair of KS. AC I thought I was going to have a problem with the agenda as you can’t read Braille with

AC Well of course, there was the famous powercut. I’d literally just come out with “Brethren will take notice ....” when the power went. I felt it appropriate to add, “ ... Or not, as the case may be ” TF I remember it well TF Worshipful Master, in closing, I know your chosen charity for your year in office is Vista could you briefly give some background on the work they do and how it has helped you? AC I have an interest in a number of charities, but VISTA is the one I know most about, located as it is off Gwendoline Road in Leicester. “VISTA founded in 1858, provides highly practical and customised services to Blind and Partiallysighted folk of all ages, of whom there are 6,000 in Leicestershire and Rutland. They employ highly qualified Rehabilitation Officers and maintain consistently high standards of service. I’ve never had any financial or contractual interest in VISTA, but I was a Trustee for 32 years and am currently its Hon. Vice President”. TF Thank you so much for all of your reflections. AC It’s been a pleasure and a privilege, Tony.

Burbach Lodge (8699)

250th Regular Meeting On December 13th Burbach Lodge (8699), celebrated its two hundred and fiftieth meeting in style. The Lodge which was founded in 1976 meets in Hinckley at the newly refurbished Masonic Hall and continues to attract initiates and joining members. The Christmas meeting is always regarded as somewhat special in the Lodge and this year was certainly no exception. The initiate, Daryl Westwood, experienced a wonderful ceremony in the new Lodge room followed by a “Joyful & Festive” Festive Board. Some 86 brethren attended the meeting, possibly a record number for the Lodge, including forty-two visitors many of them visiting the newly refurbished premises for the first time and being very impressed with the standard of the facilities now being offered.

The time honoured tradition of the singing of Christmas Carols was once again led by W Bro. Dennis Snow who almost managed to keep control of the assembled choir to the strains of “Five Gold Rings” and “Let it Snow – Dennis Snow – Dennis Snow”. To celebrate this special occasion, the Master, W Bro. Martin Staley, had commissioned a celebration cake made by Mrs Pat Briggs and this, decorated with the Lodge Banner, was cut towards the end of the evening and distributed

amongst the members and visitors. Our photograph shows the Master and two Founders of the Lodge, W Bros. D. Snow and A. Gibson-Leitch, cutting the cake.

Church Service On Sunday 9th October 2011, Choral Evensong was held at the Collegiate Church of St. Mary de Castro. The service was attended by over 150 Royal Arch Masons, wives, partners, family and friends. It was good to see the service proving so popular with over a 25% attendance increase. Put the date in your diary for 2012. Before the service the bells were rung by members of Craft, and friends under the direction of R. Kingsley Mason. The service was taken by E Comp. Ian Needham MEZ – Chapter of Fortitude (279) and E Comp. Andrew Nicholson IPZ – Uppingham in Rutland Chapter (9119). After the service the congregation enjoyed a finger buffet prepared by Richard, Chrissie and Matt Jelly, served with a glass of wine by Paul Wallace and John Townsend.

Master Masons & new Exaltees Evening Another “Open Evening” for Master Masons and new Exaltees was held at Freemasons’ Hall, London Road, Leicester on Tuesday 29th November 2011. The highest attendance ever, over 150 Master Masons and Companions, were treated to a demonstration entitled “Why the Holy Royal Arch” performed by Companions from the Royal Arch Province of Northamptonshire and Huntingdonshire. This highly entertaining and thought provoking demonstration, dramatically performed (in period costume) but with humour, clearly demonstrated the origins of the Royal Arch and part of Craft Masonry history and how the two are so closely affiliated today. This was performed in the Holmes Lodge Room and was followed by cocktails and an excellent buffet. The whole event was well received by all those that attended. LODGE NEWS

Major Redevelopment of

Hinckley Masonic Hall In 1803 the first warranted Lodge of Freemasons in Hinckley was opened and for many years the Brethren met in several of the town’s hostelries. In 1858 Earl Howe Past Deputy Grand Master and Provincial Grand Master for Leicestershire (at that time Rutland was not part of the Province) took the Chair and helped to restore the fortunes of the Lodge, then known as the Knights of Malta Lodge Number 58 (which was subsequently renumbered to todays No. 50). Among the positive changes made were for the Lodge to meet at the Town Hall. After several other moves the Lodge stayed for over 20 years at the Union Hotel, where a special Lodge Room had been fitted out on the top floor. The meetings of the Masons were always a great occasion at the Union and other regular drinkers would join in the firing in the bars below.

In the 1920’s a feeling was growing among the members that they should have their own custom built Masonic Hall. Accordingly the Brethren subscribed towards this project and the Brethren moved to the new Hall on April 18th 1929 which was a single storey building with a Lodge Room, dining room and kitchen. For many years the Hall was a favourite venue for other organisations to hold their annual dance etc. and a useful source of income was gained from these lettings. Over the years more Masonic Lodges had been formed in Hinckley and by the early part of the new Millenium we had 3 Craft Lodges, 1 RA Chapter, 1 RAM. In all honesty the Hall was beginning to look somewhat dated and bookings were falling off as other more modern meeting places opened in the town. The original design of the Hall had always allowed for another floor to be built above the existing structure and investigations by W Bro. Alan Anderton led to careful consideration and debate and it was

finally agreed to undertake the extension in July 2011. W Bro. Grand Chaplain, W Bro. Canon Michael Wilson, who offered up suitable thanks. The P.G.M. was then also able to present a 50 year Certificate to W Bro. Tom Hackney a very popular and senior Past Master of the Lodge. The most important part of the evening was, of course, the Installation of the Master Elect, Brother Philip Crowfoot and he was installed by his predecessor, W Bro. Adrian Pegg.

The Provincial Grand Master was kept up to date with all the developments and decided it would be an ideal opportunity to dedicate the new Lodge room at the Installation meeting of the Knights of Malta Lodge to which members of all the Lodges and Orders that met at the Hinckley centre had been invited. On the night the Provincial Grand Master R W Bro. David Hagger brought his Provincial team. The Lodge was also honoured with the presence of the Deputy Grand Master of Mark Master Masons, R W Bro. Michael Herbert , and the P.G.M. of the Mark Province, R W Bro. Tony Morris. The Provincial Grand Chapter was of course represented by the M.E. Grand Superintendant, E Comp. Peter Kinder and so all the Rulers of the various Degrees and Orders meeting in Hinckley were represented. It was also nice to see the Past Deputy Provincial Grand Master, V W Bro. Michael Turnbull present after his recent illness. Many other Grand Officers were present and it was a glittering representation in all meanings of the word. The P.G.M. acted as Dedicating Officer for the new room and was assisted by the Provincial

Commemorative photographs were taken by W Bro. John Reilly, who has been extremely thorough in recording many events in Hinckley and to whom we are extremely grateful. The Brethren enjoyed a wonderful Festive Board and 95 sat down to the traditional Christmas meal during which the Loving Cup presented by Earl Howe was circulated to every Brother. This Cup is filled with a special punch prepared to a secret formula and all agreed that W Bro. John Gilbert had made this year’s brew well up to standard. What a great way to start a new phase in the Masonic Hall activities in Hinckley and we can all offer thanks to the Board of Directors of the Hinckley Masonic Hall, headed by their Chairman, W Bro. John Swift, for having the vision and tenacity to push this project through to a satisfactory conclusion. Members of all Lodges and Chapters meeting in Hinckley from now on will have a user friendly home to meet in and one in which they will be very comfortable for many years to come... and all visitors will continue to be always warmly welcomed. News from Ashby “The Combined Christian Orders in Ashby, Ascebi Chapter Rose Croix (1153) and Sir Richard Hastyngs Preceptory (660), held their annual Christmas Lunch on the 4th December 2011 at the Royal Hotel in Ashby de la Zouch. This event which has been held for nearly ten years now attracted a record attendance of 41 members, wives and guests and was honoured by the presence of the Provincial Prior of the Knight Templars, Rt.E.Kt. David Walters who in his address to those present mentioned the history of Freemasonry in Ashby, and in particular Rose Croix, dating back to the time of the French prisoners of war in the early 1800’s. A raffle was held and a vast number of prizes were distributed to the delight of the lucky winners. The raffle surplus of £250 was shared equally between Rainbows Children’s Hospice at Loughborough and Macmillan Nurses. A collection was also taken in memory of Mrs Eileen Holmes, wife of E&P Bro. Roger Holmes, who had recently passed away, and a donation of £50 was made to the Leicestershire Air Ambulance Service and £90 to the British Legion Poppy Appeal, £40 of which had been raised by E&P Bro. Andy Ramsay by selling lapel pins prior to Remembrance Day.” “On Remembrance Sunday at the Remembrance Day Parade in Ashby de la Zouch, W Bro. Hugh A Milward, IPM of Ferrers & Ivanhoe Lodge (779), laid a wreath at the town’s War Memorial. The event was very well attended by Brethren of both Ferrers & Ivanhoe Lodge (779) and Hastings Lodge (8695) as well as the local Rotary Clubs, Round Table and Lions.” 28 | Leicester Square | Spring 2012
