Welcome

ary 2012

Dear Readers It doesn’t seem that long ago when we were preparing the Spring 2010 issue (25) and here we are with issue 26!! A lot of changes have taken place since then, which hopefully will create an increase in quality, content and interest. In seeking to raise the standard, as well as reduce the cost to the Province, the PGM approved a new approach:-

1

Guided by the PGM, a small team was formed (Jim Williamson, Tony Sibson, John Peberdy, Richard Jelly and myself) to take on a more strategic approach in looking to provide a quality and relevant, but value for money proposition.

2

We would bring the advertising sales inhouse and thereby keep the income generated to offset printing/publishing costs, as our previous arrangement meant that each copy cost 50p each (excluding postage). Likewise our initial aim is to breakeven (thus achieving that value for money objective).

3

We would look to use a local printer with a good track record, as well as an understanding of the Masonic ethos and thereby be more responsive to our needs. In this respect we are delighted that we have made a partnership agreement with AnchorPrint (Leicester) to achieve all our aims and look forward to working together for many issues to come.

4

Generate new ideas for inclusion so as to further stimulate interest in reading and suggestions for further improvement (e.g. Letters to the Editor, other Orders news etc).

5

Extend the circulation to a wider audience to spread the good news about Freemasonry.

There are 3 requests I would make to you as readers:•

Your views are genuinely sought and if you have any suggestions or views you would like to be published….please contact me (If you don’t want your name published…I will respect that).

•

Your stories are important as without them... there is no story to share?

•

If you know of anyone that might want to advertise in this publication – please direct them to Tony Sibson, who will be more than pleased to talk through what is on offer.

Happy reading

CHARITY NEWS

The Provincial Grand Master decided that last year’s Christmas Collection would be split between LOROS and more Teddies for the LRI. The generosity of all the members brought the total (incl Gift Aid) to over £12,000 to be split between the 2 projects. The LRMCA was approached by LOROS to help with a project to bring a Garden that was being constructed at RHS Hampton Court Show back to a courtyard at Glenfield. As it has been widely acknowledged that time spent within or looking at a beautiful garden can help a patient come to terms with an incurable illness and provide a restful retreat for visitors & staff. The LRMCA met with the project team from LOROS and ascertained that the cost to bring the garden to LOROS was £15,000. After an approach to the Grand Charity for a contribution it was decided to pay the balance of £10,000 from the Christmas Collection and LRMCA funds. This it was felt was a truly tangible way to demonstrate Freemasonry working in the local Community. Leicestershire & Rutland Freemasons were listed as a sponsor in the literature given out at Hampton Court as well as a notice posted at the garden that it was being taken away and being reconstructed by your generosity. The Provincial Grand Master and W.Bro. John Peberdy were invited to Hampton Court to view the garden (which won a Show Silver medal). A fuller story will be reported in the next edition but for those with internet access, some photos/information are available for viewing at www.lorosgarden.org.uk or http://gallery.me.com/simon.scmp#100429. The formal opening of the Garden is scheduled later this year.

Since 2004 the Freemasons of Leicestershire and Rutland have given 20,000 teddies to Children attending the Leicester Royal Infirmary Children’s Accident and Emergency Department. The Teddies are given by the Staff to Children admitted in severe distress where they feel that a Teddy Bear to cuddle will help alleviate the Stress and assist them with their treatments. The Nurses spoke enthusiastically about the comfort the Teddies brought to the children. They also use the teddy to show to the child what is wrong with them and what the treatment will be.

The Initiative Teddies for Loving Care (TLC) was started by the Freemasons in Essex in 2003 and was taken up by many of the Masonic Provinces throughout the Country with approaching to 1 million teddies having now been given to Children attending Accident and Emergency departments.

FREEMASONRY CARES

The Province of Leicestershire and Rutland is one of the first Provinces to launch this initiative. The Provincial Grand Master, R.W.Bro. David Hagger identified its potential in bringing help to Brethren, their families and most particularly the Lodge Widows, who are not aware of the assistance available from the four main Central Masonic Charities. The launch took place nine months ago, in September 2010, when the Chief Executive of the Masonic Samaritan Fund, Richard Douglas, addressed a meeting attended by our Provincial Officers, Worshipful Masters, Lodge Almoners and Charity Stewards. Richard explained the concept of the scheme in providing a central Freephone Number, administered by the main charities in London. Applications for assistance Freemasons-Leicester Advert Portraitt.pdf 1 has 05/08/2011 can be requested and it is Square ascertained if the applicant an

appropriate Masonic connection. If so they could be either put directly through to whichever of the Central Charities is most appropriate to their need or will be directed back to the Province for further help in completing their application.

Every Brother in the Province has been sent the Freemasonry Cares brochure containing the details of the scheme, and a handy “credit card” and a key ring with the contact numbers in 11:44 order that these will always be readily available. In a covering letter the PGM has asked the Brethren to ensure that their families are aware of the scheme and that the contact details are available to them. In a separate initiative the Province, through the Lodge Almoners, has established a data base of all our Lodge Widows. This allows the PGM to write to the widows to explain the Freemasonry Cares initiative and enclose the Freemasonry Cares Brochure, “credit Card” and key ring. There is no doubt that with the help of Freemasonry Cares we have been able to identify significant amounts of previously unmet need amongst the Brethren, their families and especially the Lodge Widows. There has been over thirty direct enquiries to the central Freephone number of which the vast majority have received help from one of the Central Charities. However it is also apparent that it has stimulated more requests for help directly to the Provincial and Lodge Almoners, and it is estimated that in all over 40 cases of need have been identified and helped as a result of the Freemasonry Cares initiative within our Province.

FREEMASONRY CARES

Your health is our concern As it enters its 21st year the Masonic Samaritan Fund continues to support the health and care needs of Freemasons and their dependants.

Please help us to reach all those who need our help. Call 020 7404 1550 or visit www.msfund.org.uk Support is available to: • Freemasons • The wives, partners and dependants of Freemasons • The widows, surviving partners and dependants of deceased Freemasons who have an identified health or care need and, faced with a long wait for treatment or care, cannot afford their own private provision without incurring financial hardship.

MEDICAL The Fund will consider applications for a wide variety of medical treatments from hip replacement to cardiac surgery, from digital hearing aids to drug treatment for cancer or degenerative diseases, from stomach banding to macular degeneration.

DENTAL Applications are welcome where NHS treatment is unavailable or where costs are in excess of NHS charging rates. Financial help is provided in support of dental treatment that is clinically necessary, in the most cost-effective and efficient manner. Grants are not available where the proposed treatment is purely cosmetic or where an applicant simply prefers to receive private treatment.

RESPITE If you look after someone who needs support because of a physical or learning disability, mental illness or whose health is impaired by sickness or old age, and who, without help, would not be able to cope with the demands of basic living, then you are a carer. It is important that, as a carer, you take time off for yourself. Grants are available from the MSF to support carers. Funding is available towards the cost of short periods of residential care or to provide regular short breaks at home. MOBILITY The Fund is also able to provide grants for the supply and maintenance of mobility equipment, specialist equipment or home adaptations in response to a specific medical need.

For further information about any of the above please contact the Fund or your Lodge, or Provincial Grand Almoner.

FREEMASON’S HALL ANNUAL INITATES EVENING

Initiates’ Evening On Wednesday 18th May 2011 the Annual Initiates’ Evening was held at Freemasons’ Hall, London Road, Leicester. The event was very well supported and all those Brethren initiated within the previous 12 months, together with their wives or partners who attended, were given a conducted tour of the building. They were also given talks on various aspects of Freemasonry including the importance of charity and how the money we raise is donated to the various charities. The evening concluded with a buffet and glass of wine when the Brethren their wives and partners who attended were able to have an informal chat and ask further questions.

Alistair Cameron and Paula Cameron. Alistair was a February Initiative to Newarke Lodge (2nd in November) they found the evening “Great and really interesting”

DEVONSHIRE COURT ASCOT DAY

Ascot Day at Devonshire Court

The annual event of ASCOT Day @ RMBI Devonshire Court took place at midday on Sunday 5th June. The last 3 outside fund-raising events had been affected by rain, high winds or both. This year the weather was warm and dry for once. A large outdoor screen was positioned at one side of the area to show the racing. The computerised races started almost immediately with a trial race to get the uninitiated into the swing of things before lunch. The ‘Friends’ committee had prepared a buffet lunch of cold meats, salmon, quiche and salads followed by a vast choice of desserts. The bar was also available for alcoholic and soft drinks. While lunch was taken a group of singers from the Kingsley Lodge in Northamptonshire entertained us all and continued to do so throughout the afternoon between the remaining seven races. It was possible to become an ‘owner’ for the duration of the race and the winning ‘owner’ in each race was presented with a rosette and bottle of bubbly. The Ladies were encouraged to wear hats and prizes were given for the best Ladies hat and the best Lady Resident’s hat. The warmer weather this year meant that more residents than usual were able to take part in the event and joined in on the lawns when the Province-wide raffle was drawn by the President of the ‘Friends’, R.W.Bro. Derek Buswell. All in all, a pleasant afternoon enjoyed by everyone having raised over £5,000 and we extend an open invitation to next year’s event!!! (weather almost guaranteed??)

Lodge of The Golden Fleece

Challenge

David Lewin, charity steward of The Lodge of The Golden Fleece (2081) completed a Sky Dive on his 70th birthday in order to raise funds on behalf of The Lodge of The Golden Fleece’s contribution to the 2012 Festival. The Sky Dive was in tandem with an experienced instructor as it was David’s first attempt. All went well and David raised £1,200 for the festival.

This year’s final was held at Freemasons’ Hall Leicester on the 16th May 2011 where 22 teams took part in a hard fought battle.

The winners were: David enjoyed the experience and said he would do it again (perhaps on his 80th?)

The overall amount of money raised for the Festival was £530.

On Sunday 17th July 200 Masons their families and friends were present at the garden party held at the Provincial Grand Master’s home in Cropston. The weather proved to be better than forecast after horrendous conditions the previous day, when it poured with rain, whilst a few volunteers erected the Gazebos. Chrissie Jelly and her team of ladies organised, prepared and served the food which was enjoyed by all. The PGM’s son in law, Charlie Bloor, kindly donated all of the cold meats and pies. Thanks to the generosity of those who gave prizes and the efforts of Steve Davison’s daughters, Emily and Esther, who sold the tickets, the Tombola which was organised by John Peberdy and Terry Weston raised nearly £900. Everyone present was entertained by the music and singing of Stone Raven. The day raised a few pounds short of £4000 for the 2012 Festival. A big thank you to David Hagger for arranging the event at his home and all who made the day such a big success.

The PGM’s team (Dave’s Demons) were almost the strongest team coming in 21st with the motto of “It’s not the winning…it’s the taking part” with the assurance they will improve yet again next year!!! Invitations will be sent out to all Lodges to participate early next year. There are no limits on how many teams a Lodge can enter as regional heats will be held.

MASONIC NEWS

Freemasons’ Hall

Open Doors

The Provincial Grand Master has started an initiative to open up our Masonic Centre in Leicester to allow the general public to view the Homes Lodge Room and the Library and Museum. Every Tuesday and Thursday for six weeks from the middle of June to the end of July, tours of the building were conducted by trained leaders. These tours were greatly appreciated by all who joined in and this can be seen as a pilot scheme for the years to come. The Provincial Grand Master wishes to publicise the tours more widely and has commissioned a leaflet, which you will all receive with the newsletter and the invitation to the Annual Meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge. No doubt you are all in contact with many groups and societies who may wish to add a tour of our London Road Headquarters to their yearly programme. Could I ask you to do all you can to publicise this facility and note that lunches can be provided if the group so wishes.

Freemasons’ Hall

Public Open Day

It is over 13 years since under the banner of “Freemasonry in the Community”, Freemasons’ Hall was open to the public for the first time and where over 500 members of the public were given a guided tour of the building and an insight into the local charitable work that Freemasons are active within the Province. The Provincial Grand Master has agreed that such an event be repeated on Saturday 9th June 2012 and plans are now in progress to make this happen. Individual project team leaders are currently being identified to take forward the work and if any individual has specific skills/ knowledge (e.g. marketing/ publicity) to offer or would like to help out on the day, please contact W.Bro. Henry Kukiewicz (Project Manager) 07895 055321 or 01298 213353 or email henrykuk@hotmail.co.uk.

FREEMASONRY TODAY UPDATE The Province has had a number of articles published in Freemasonry Today (FMT) over the last couple of years.

Do you know where in Ashby this foundation stone is? Answer will be in next issue.

FMT is now on line and stories will be able to be submitted electronically and viewed online. The existing hard copy sent to every subscribing member will continue but stories will continue to be selected by the FMT Editor based on his editorial judgement. LODGE NEWS

Meet (UK’s longest serving LifeGuard!!!)

Harry Williams Former Royal Marine – Bro. Harry Williams (John Corah Lodge 7736 – Charity Steward) was featured on a full page of the Leicestershire Chronicle on 28th May 2011 (page 7) naming him as the UK’s longest serving lifeguard (79 years young – 50 years service). He was likewise featured in the national Big Splash campaign which sought to inspire the UK to swim!! In the features it made references to his experiences as a lifeguard for nearly 50 years starting with; rescuing somebody from the River Soar at 15 years of age, rescuing individuals as far and wide as USA, Bournemouth Pier, Mablethorpe. He worked as a Lifeguard at the St Margaret’s Swimming Pool as well as working with disabled youngsters to learn to swim. In 1991 he trained the swimming team for the Special Olympics and of the 29 that entered…29 won medals!! He is still regularly recognised by individuals he has trained or been involved with in swimming at St Margaret’s Baths but is still involved in training lifeguards at New Parks Leisure Centre… and plans to continue doing so as long as he can. Harry has completed a Triathlon, cycled around Rutland Water, 27 hours in the Red Sea, swimming off the Cyprus coast, 25 mile annual swims etc etc …all in aid of charity fund raising. “It is something of an honour to find out I’m the oldest lifeguard, I was amazed, although I don’t actually think of myself as being old”

Ian Nesbitt) and members of the Humber Stone Lodge (7744) on the evening of the historically memorable installation.

LODGE NEWS

50 Year

Membership Certificates The following Brethren have been awarded 50 year Certificates in recognition of their service to Freemasonry.

Brothers-in-Law When W.Bro. Ian Nesbitt was Worshipful Master of The Humber Stone Lodge (7744) in 2007, his then Senior Warden Bro. Dean Newman (whom he subsequently installed into the chair) suggested holding a Summer Charity Garden Party. It would be hosted by Dean and Christine Newman at their home in Broughton Astley, with monies being donated to the 2012 Festival. Everything was subsequently arranged and not only was the event well supported and money successfully raised for the 2012 Festival but it coincided with two of their offspring meeting for the first time – Sam Nesbitt & Will Newman. Suffice it to say that their incidental meeting blossomed in the months and years ahead to the extent that on 30th April 2011 (the day after the Royal Will married Kate) their own Will tied the knot with Sam at the village church in Mortehoe Devon, a favourite holiday spot of the newlyweds. In fact so many people travelled to Devon for the occasion that the Watersmeet Hotel was completely booked out all weekend solely for the wedding party. Apart from a strong breeze the whole weekend remained warm with sunny intervals throughout, with many guests walking on the beach, in the sea, along the footpaths or socialising on the hotel verandahs. The bride wore a beautiful silver gown and white veil with a jewelled tiara, the latter being worn by her Mum Carole when she married her Dad W.Bro. Ian in 1972. The bridesmaids were in a complimentary aubergine dresses, with the gentlemen in grey suits, silver waistcoats and aubergine cravats. It was a wonderful occasion for all concerned and just goes to show how masonry can unexpectedly change lives for the better. Dean and Ian have been masonic brothers and good friends since they joined The Humber Stone Lodge and both were introduced by W.Bro. John McVey, who along with his wife Flo attended the post wedding garden party on 29th May – yes at the home of W.Bro. Dean and Chris Newman where it all began.

Our congratulations are extended to each Brother on this most wonderful achievement, which will no doubt be acknowledged and celebrated by their own Lodges in their own unique way.

W.Bro. GF Hipwell (6794) W.Bro. CJ Hurst (4656) W.Bro. RJ Rosser (5208) W.Bro. NW Lewin (5664) W.Bro. GG Wright (6406) W.Bro. JB Harrison (3091) W.Bro. JE Pickering (523) W.Bro. JE Brabbs (5061) W.Bro. WB Davis (779) W.Bro. D Brown (8429)

Does the union of these two families now mean that W.Bro. Ian & W.Bro. Dean are Brothers-in-law as well?

LIBRARY & MUSEUM

A Masonic Marble Table

The table is now on display at the Provincial Museum at London Road

The Library and Museum at London Road has recently acquired a valuable and beautiful masonic artefact in the form of a Pietre Dure marble table containing a symbolic depiction of King Solomon’s Temple. Past Provincial Grand Secretary, W.Bro. Don Peacock saw the item advertised in the auction catalogue of Messrs Gildings of Market Harborough. R.W.Bro. David Hagger authorised a bid, which was then made by W.Bro. Walter Glover, and this was successful. But what is Pietre Dure work? It translates as “hard stone” and is a way of making pictures from slices of marble set into a stone surface. A technique known to the Romans, the art form was greatly developed by the Medici family in 16th Century Florence. For two centuries this was art for Kings and Emperors, Popes and Potentates, but in the 19th Century items were made for wealthy people of other social classes. Our table dates from that time. It is early to mid 19th Century in date, about 1825. It is octagonal in form — a square upon a square — and consists of a border in which various jewels of office are depicted, all formed of marble slices, and these surround the central picture of two pillars and the entrance to the Temple standing on a chequered pavement. The pattern is enriched by a “sky” made of the semi precious stone Lapis Lazuli. The table was formerly in private ownership in Nuneaton, and how it came there is unknown. There are two similar tables known to exist, one in New York and one in London, but they differ from ours in detail. Further research into the table and its antecedents is under way and will be reported via the Lodge of Research, but in the meantime, Brethren are urged to come in and see this lovely object — it’s bound to be a much admired feature at Ladies` Festivals!!!

W.Bro. David Hughes

If any Brother has any information that may assist in further identifying this table please contact W.Bro. Walter Glover at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor

...

I have long wondered whether we do enough to explain to new members, what Freemasonry in general and the 3 Craft degrees in particular, are all about. When answers do become clear to them, the signs of greater enjoyment are obvious. Much more literature is available nowadays but to my mind, the best opportunity for explanations comes when a new member has to leave the Lodge for some considerable time, during which another member’s Passing or Raising work has been carried out. Some Lodges do have a structure in place to use this time more meaningfully but perhaps more can still be done. I (and no doubt also the Executive) would be pleased to hear your views, both in terms of relevant material and appointed personnel to oversee it. W.Bro. Jim Williamson (PM 2081)

Dear Sir... Freemasonry Cares works!!! Upon general release of the Freemasonry Cares literature, 2 Brethren from Lodge of Welcome (5664) had queries referred to the Provincial Almoner who immediately dealt with one locally and referred the other to appropriate central charity. This involved Bro. Alan Marshall’s wife Ellie who has MS and is increasingly getting immobile. The RMBI immediately sprang into action, the Prov Almoner took charge of form filling and liaising with London relieving me and the Marshalls of all the worries of the process. In double quick time Ellie had her stairlift fitted at home and her life has been made much, much more comfortable. I knew “Freemasonry Cares” was a brilliant idea! Our Lodge is now fully aware of its capabilities and have no hesitation in promoting what it can do.

EDITORS COMMENTS Work has been carried by the Provincial Mentor and his team in producing high quality materials for new and established Freemasons through the Mentoring scheme and due for launch within this coming Masonic season.

Banner Bearer – deja vous? Royal College of Surgeons

2013 APPEAL

On 30th March the MEGS, Comp Peter Kinder, launched the Leicestershire and Rutland appeal in support of the Royal College of Surgeons. The year 2013 marks the bi-centenary of the emergence of the Royal Arch and the effort will complement the funds raised in 1967 to mark the 250th anniversary of Craft Masonry. Over 100 Companions and their ladies welcomed five representatives of the Royal College, three of whom gave presentations of the research they had carried out with the help of Royal College grants. The presentation ended with Johnny Fountain, the College Development Officer, showing a CD of the wider areas of research undertaken by the Royal College. Following such an interesting presentation there were a number of questions, after which everyone retired to the Holmes Dining Room for a buffet supper. During the evening a raffle was held which raised the sum of £400 for the appeal. All Companions will have received a leaflet and Gift Aid form and the Grand Superintendent sincerely hopes that the appeal will be generously supported.

Earlier this year E. Comp Paul Wallace was appointed as Past Grand Standard Bearer in the Supreme Grand Chapter. Next day he drove up to North Shore Golf Club in Skegness at the crack of dawn to a golfing weekend with friends from the club where he always has a habit of walking off the green with the flagstick in his hand. As per custom & practice he did it again that day in the company of three other members with whom he was playing when one of them noticed that he was walking off with the flagstick and enquired………… whether he thought he was “some sort of Standard Bearer or something????”

Reynard Chapter

Garden party On Sunday 24th July the First Principal E. C. Comp David Turner of Reynard Chapter (9285) hosted a garden party at his home when members and their wives enjoyed lunch and a pleasant sun drenched afternoon. Whilst the prime objective was for members to get together and enjoy each others company, a collection was taken in aid of the Royal Arch Festival 2013 raising £255.

ROYAL ARCH MATTERS

60 years a Royal Arch Mason! At the February meeting of Wiclif Chapter (3078), E. Comp. Norman Pettit celebrated 60 years as a Royal Arch Mason. The meeting was attended by the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, E. Comp. Peter Kinder and many of his Provincial team. This visit was not publicised as it was a planned surprise to E. Comp. Norman. At an appropriate moment the Grand Superintendent interrupted the published agenda and requested the PGDC, E. Comp. Gerry Thurgar, to present E. Comp. Norman Pettit to him. After congratulating him on his amazing achievement the MEGS asked the Provincial Scribe E, E. Comp. John Townsend, to read a citation. A framed copy of this document was then presented to E. Comp. Norman, accompanied by enthusiastic applause from all the Companions present. To highlight the significance of E. Comp. Norman’s achievement, the MEGS noted that in February 1951, when Norman was exalted, he was but a figment of his parents’ imagination. On this same evening Bro. Colin Frank Moore was exalted into the Wiclif Chapter and welcomed into The Royal Arch by the MEGS.

2011

On Thursday 24th March, the Annual Convocation took place at London Road, Leicester. There were seven visiting Grand Superintendents and thirty other VIP’s from neighbouring provinces. The Deputy Grand Superintendent and the Second Provincial Grand Principal. E. Comp. James Williamson and E. Comp. James Buckle were re-appointed and the MEGS then invested and installed E. Comp. Noel Manby as Third Provincial Grand Principal. After thanking E. Comp. John Booton for his valuable help as Third Provincial Grand Principal, the MEGS invested those Companions who had been appointed and promoted.

Royal Arch Buffet The MEGS, E. Comp Peter Kinder and his wife Sandie hosted the R.A Buffet at London Road Leicester on Tuesday 14th June 2011. This popular evening was very well attended by active Provincial Officers, Grand officers and Companions who had helped to serve the Province throughout the year. After enjoying a sit down buffet entertainment was provided by the Tudor Choir under the direction of Judy Dodd. The MEGS had great pleasure in presenting Judy with a cheque for LOROS and, of course, a lovely bouquet of flowers. E. Comp. Paul Wallace then presented Sandie Kinder with a beautiful bouquet of flowers.

Royal Arch Luncheon On Sunday 23rd January the MEGS E. Comp Peter Kinder and his wife Sandie, together with his coPrincipals and their wives, hosted a luncheon at London Road, Leicester. The event, which was an informal occasion and to which all Royal Arch Masons and their partners were invited, was very well attended and enjoyed by all.
