PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER WELCOME FROM THE PGM

Welcome from the Provincial Grand Master

LEICESTER SQUARE WINTER 2010

T

his has been an exciting time, a period in my life which I have thoroughly enjoyed. As you are aware on the 26 th May I was Installed as Provincial Grand Master of this wonderful Masonic Province of Leicestershire and Rutland by the Deputy Grand Master, R. W. Bro. Jonathan Spence. As I mentioned in my address the Deputy Grand Master made me feel completely at ease, and this added not only to my enjoyment but also that of the 480 Brethren who attended, of which after the Ceremony 340 Brethren

dined together. It was a happy day, and characterised both before and afterwards by the generous support of many Brethren. I am sure that with your continued support this Province will prosper. At that Ceremony I appointed and invested W. Bro. Jim Buckle and W. Bro. Peter Kinder as my Deputy and Assistant Provincial Grand Masters respectively. Both are experienced Masons, well known and respected throughout the Province. Already their support to me has been invaluable. During the Masonic recess I and my Executive team are taking the opportunity of having a new look at the way this Province is administered, in particular the work carried out by our Provincial Officers. I can assure you that it will not be change for changes sake. Since my Installation we have celebrated two Lodge Centenaries, the first being that of St. Martin’s Lodge No 3431 and followed by Wyggeston Lodge No 3448. At both these Meetings the message of my address was how both Lodges had adapted to the many changes in society since their Consecration. Freemasonry in common with other aspects of our modern life has not escaped the resulting influences of new thoughts. We should be facing up to these changes, at the same time preserving the principles that have been the guiding light of our Craft for more than 275 years. We should as in the past be recruiting men of proven quality who will enhance the work of our Lodges in the future. The skill is in being able to harness the best of the changes to the tenets of Masonry. I have always stressed the value of working as a team, whether it be the Provincial team or the team of Officers within a Lodge. Nothing better illustrates a team effort than that of the 2012 Festival which has now raised funds in excess of £1.16 million. This has been achieved by the efforts of many Brethren, their wives and families. We should all be proud of this and also happy in the knowledge that our efforts will benefit many elderly people less fortunate than ourselves. I and my Provincial team look forward to meeting you on our visits to your Lodges during the coming session, to share that bond of friendship which is I think unique amongst Freemasons. Brethren, above all enjoy your Freemasonry. W. Bro P Kinder (APGM), R. W. Bro D Hagger (PGM), R. W. Bro J Spence (DGM), W. Bro J Buckle (DPGM), W. Bro S Madden (acting GDC)

Installation of the Provincial Grand Master

PGM leaving the Lodge after Installation

On the 26 th May 2010 - 450 Brethren attended the Installation of R. W. Bro David V Hagger as Provincial Grand Master of Leicestershire and Rutland at Freemasons Hall,London Road, Leicester.

T

he Installing Officer was R. W. Bro Jonathan Spence accompanied by W. Bro Sebastian Madden (acting Grand Director of Ceremonies), V. W. Bro Graham Redman (Asst Grand Secretary) together with other Acting Grand Officers. 12 Provincial Grand Masters supported by many Deputies, Assistants and Secretaries attended in support of the day’s proceedings. The Provincial Grand Master Designate was escorted into Provincial Grand Lodge by seven Masters including the Master of his own Highcross Lodge (4835), bearing the collar of office. The PGM was obligated, invested and installed and then he proceeded to appoint his Deputy (W. Bro Jim Buckle) and Assistant (W. Bro Peter Kinder) and reappointed all the existing Provincial Officers. The Installation Festive Board was attended by over 350 Brethren, where thanks were given to all in attendance and participation of the day’s memorable event. Gifts were presented to the Deputy Grand Master and his escort, of local Provincial produce, local Masonic publications and Festival ties as momentos of the day. All departed, with the satisfaction that the Province was in good, steady and capable hands to lead us onto another chapter of our illustrious Provincial history.

fter a wine reception and two course supper, the guests enjoyed an entertainment showcasing music from the 1930’s given by the Tudor Choir, directed by Judy Dodd, and supported by the local trio “Tea for Three” (David and Robert Calow and Marguerite Beatson). The entertainment was MC’d by Colin Blackler (aka Bud Flanagan), one of the most recent members of St Martin’s. Any resemblance between Chesney Allen and a previous APGM was mistaken! An enjoyable evening raised £1,936 for the Festival.

A sell-out attendance of 185 brethren with their wives and friends filled the Oliver Dining Room on the 24th June for a musical evening, sponsored by St. Martin’s Lodge, in aid of the 2012 Festival.

Festival Update Mood Since the last edition of Leicester Square I am pleased to say that the Festival has moved on by leaps and bounds, all of which is thanks to your generosity.

A lthough we have had several major events over the last few months, they have all been a great success. That is apart from the Rutland Water Family Fun day which we had to cancel through lack of support. For some unknown reason it just did not seem to appeal. The Golf Day at Rothley Park, arranged by the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, Peter Kinder, took place on a glorious warm June day. The golf and the dinner in the evening were enjoyed by all who took part and raised over £1,000 for the Festival. The most successful event so far, was the Sportsmen’s Dinner at the Leicester Tigers, arranged by the Provincial Grand Master and Peter Kinder. The magnificent number of 488 Masons and non-Masons enjoyed an evening of good food, good entertainment and were able to drink and be merry. The MC for the evening was Peter Wheeler and Martin Corry MBE was the after dinner speaker. Bleddyn Jones, of Radio Leicester, in a duo with Martin Corry added to the entertainment. An auction of memorabilia took place and the evening ended with the drawing of the Car Raffle and other prizes. The whole event including the car raffle raised over £15,500. My grateful thanks to all those who supported the evening and I hope that some of the nonMasons present may be persuaded to join Freemasonry. The total we have so far raised is £1.16 million towards our target of £1.5 million. We still have a way to go but I am sure with your continued generosity, the events being run by Lodges and a few more events the Province intends to put on before the end of the Festival that we can reach our £1.5 million. It will not be easy so please continue to support us.

itself raised £1,200. The successful bidders won items as diverse as a Golf Day & Meal at The Belfry, sponsored by Bro. Pravesh Ganda of Gateway Financial Advisers, dinner at Bro. Atul Dawda’s Spice of India restaurant in Syston, matching watches, a hotel vacation (both offered by Bro. Pravin Pattani) and cosmetic dental treatment from Bro. Din Kaderbhai of Thurmaston Dental Practice. After adding an estimated Gift Aid amount, the Lodge expects the final sum raised to be just shy of £4,000. The third annual 2012 event is already in the planning stage – indeed, the Committee is considering an even larger venue for next year, due to the expected demand.

On October 9 th, for the second successive year, Bradgate Lodge held a Golf Day and Evening Ball, at Kirby Muxloe Golf Club, in aid of the 2012 Festival.

T

he event was the brainchild of the Lodge’s current Worshipful Master, Bob Loughran, who shared the limelight with the Immediate Past Master, Pravin Pattani. At the inaugural event, last year, the Lodge raised just under £2,000 for the Festival and one guest won a new BMW for his hole in one at the eighteenth. This time, they couldn’t get the insurance for a repeat offer! This year, following an enjoyable walk, interrupted by 18 holes, by 14 golfers, 106 brethren, friends and partners attended the evening function and were entertained by local band, Kingsize. Many members submitted items for auction, compered by Bro Ian Smith, which,

After this highly amusing interlude an auction of Sporting memorabilia took place and Martin Corry entertained his audience with many amusing rugby stories. A hugely successful evening, enjoyed by all.

Over 450 gentlemen attended a Sportsmen’s Dinner at the Caterpillar Suite. Tiger’s stadium, Welford Road on Friday 9 th July. The whole evening raised a grand total of £15,000 for the Festival appeal.

T

he MC for the evening was Peter Wheeler and he introduced Bleddyn Jones and Martin Corry who proceeded to explain the differences in the game of rugby in their respective eras.

LONDON ROAD NEWS NEWS FROM LONDON ROAD

Festive Board Pricing…

Why the Difference? Dear Reader, Over the past five years I have raised the question of festive Board pricing of Lodges meeting at Leicester on a regular basis. Indeed, I have undertaken three separate surveys (each lasting a full month) to compare the difference between the actual charge made by Freemasons Hall for dinner, against the tariff set by each Lodge or side degree to its members.

O n every occasion there has been a collective difference of between £1,900 and £2,400 higher in each month analysed than was invoiced by Freemasons Hall. On some Lodges this represented an increased price of almost £5 per person, to others less, and to offer praise where it is due a minority maintained a charge in line with cost on a month by month basis. It is also interesting to note, a high proportion of these operated on a Permanent Chief Steward System, which has been recommended for many years.

LEICESTER SQUARE WINTER 2010

During the same period I have been issuing a “Steward’s Handbook” each year to all incumbent Stewards offering a variety of ways of either reducing Festive Board cost or setting out options where charging can be fairer to those who don’t drink or only take cocktails. It is quite possible to put on a Festive Board with reception drinks and controlled wine for between £24.50 and £26.50. I can assure you over the past three years every effort has been made to only increase costs when necessary. Last year we maintained menu prices from the previous year. This year we will launch new menus for the coming season that includes two menus priced lower than last year. Wine prices will rise by 1% on average, a full 3% below inflation when Government duty increases are taken into account. Standard draught beer and lager prices will be held at last year’s price, even though duty and supplier costs have had to be absorbed. To me Festive Board pricing remains an issue, and I believe every Lodge should look at how it calculates its charge. John Stew

CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS

St Martin’s Lodge Centenary

A special meeting of the Lodge was held on 28 th May to celebrate 100 years since it’s consecration at Halford Street on 16 th March 1910. St Martin’s was the first Lodge to meet, two months later, in the new Hall at No. 80 London Road.

T

he meeting was honoured by the presence of the new Provincial Grand Master, R. W. Bro David Hagger, in his first official engagement following his Installation two days earlier. R. W. Bro David was accompanied by his new Deputy and Assistant, Jim Buckle and Peter Kinder, as well as by a full complement of active Provincial Officers. The meeting appropriately took place in the Holmes Lodge Room and

was attended by nearly 150 brethren. The PGM presented the Centenary Warrant, addressed the brethren and presented Centenary Jewels to the Lodge members. W. Bro The Rev. Canon Michael Wilson, Provincial Grand Chaplain, gave an inspiring and informative oration on the Lodge’s Patron Saint, St. Martin of Tours (which will no doubt be printed in the next Transactions of the Lodge of Research). Following W. Bro John Booton’s unavoidable late withdrawal, W. Bro. Aubrey Newman, the Lodge Liaison Officer gave a wonderful “off the cuff” talk on the foundation of the Lodge. All the Brethren later toasted the health of the Lodge at a suitably generous festive board in celebration of 100 happy years.

Freemasons’ Hall Centenary In April we celebrated the centenary of our masonic headquarters at 80 London Road which was consecrated on 25th April 1910.

T he Holmes Lodge Room is still recognised as perhaps the finest Provincial Masonic Lodge Room in England and to recognise its centenary we had a dinner, on 30 th April and a lunch on 16 th May, when distinguished guests from the city and county joined the Provincial Grand Master, his wife Jane and a large number of brethren and their wives at London Road. At the dinner, the principal guests were the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Lawrence Howard and his wife Christine, Bro. Robert Wann (representing the Leader of the City Council) and Mr. David Parsons CBE, leader of the County Council and Mrs. Parsons. At the lunch event, we welcomed the Revd. Canon Stephen Foster, Precentor of the Cathedral. On both occasions the guests were invited to a presentation in the Holmes Lodge Room, excellently given by W. Bros Brian Golland, David Hughes and John Booton on the origins of Freemasonry in Leicestershire and Rutland at the time of the building of the new hall and a description of the Holmes Lodge Room. After dinner in the Holmes Dining room, a toast to the Province was given by W. Bro. Philip Dodd and the official guests were presented with copies of our Centenary History by the Provincial Grand Master. A fitting postscript to the celebrations was contained in a kind letter of thanks from Dr. Lawrence Howard - “The historical introduction, the food and the company, held in such magnificent surroundings, made the evening one of the most enjoyable I have ever attended.”

Wyggeston Lodge (3448) Centenary Celebration

The Lodge was the 1st Lodge to be consecrated in the new Masonic Temple at London Road on 1st July 1910 with 111 Brethren in attendance and the Lodge bears the motto “Give freely of yourself and behold all worlds are yours”.

E

xactly 100 years later (to the day) 169 Brethren assembled to witness the Provincial Grand Master and his Deputy and almost the full retinue of Active Provincial Officers enter and take their place in the Lodge. A précis of the Consecration Meeting minutes and a short history of the Lodge were delivered by W.Bro Robert Hutchinson to all. This was followed by the Provincial Grand Secretary reading out the Centenary Warrant and in turn the Provincial Grand Master presenting it to the Worshipful Master – W.Bro Robert Rankin coupled with a thought provoking Address. An Oration was delivered by the Provincial Grand Chaplain. Centenary Jewels, copies of the Lodge history and commemorative cufflinks were presented during the course of the evening. It was the Provincial Grand Masters pleasure to promote W.Bro John Farmer to the rank of PPSGW and appointed W.Bro Kelvin Johnson to PPJGW. The Brethren then assembled for a Festive Board which contained a six course menu and coffee reflecting the original Consecration menu of 1910 (ten course menu). A special evening was had by all in celebrating 100 years of Freemasonry in Leicestershire. (Copies of the Lodge History available to view from the Library)
