Editor’s Welcome Dear Readers

Well Spring is finally here, and before we know it summer will be upon us, time for most of us to pack away the cases, wash the white gloves, and prepare for any summer learnings we may have to undertake. But before we sign off for the summer break, let us reflect on what has been one of the busiest times in Freemasonry for many years. With the Tercentenary events, and the introduction of the 2022 Festival Appeal, the rollercoaster of 2017 has not stopped and continued into this year.

Thank you very much to all that have contributed to this edition, from the Leicester Square Committee through to you, the readers, who have submitted what I hope you will agree to be a fantastic array of stories and content for this, our 39th edition.

Tercentenary Celebrations

The Tercentenary Celebrations have proved to be a splendid occasion, with a very impressive and comprehensive pageant covering the 300 year history of Freemasonry, and the 50th anniversary of the investiture of the Grand Master, and I, like many other Brethren, felt privileged to have received an invitation to attend.

On my return journey from the Royal Albert Hall to Leicester my travelling companion was W. Bro. Dr. M David M Parkes Bowen.

said to Brother David that I thought it unlikely that there would have been many other Masons who had attended both ceremonies.

Brother David told me during our train journey, amongst many other things, that he had attended Grand Lodge on the occasion of installation of The Grand Master, W. Bro. H R H The Duke of Kent K.G. in 1967.

David is a member of Albert Edward Lodge No. 1560 and was installed as Master in November 1966; hence he attended Grand Lodge in 1967. I

W. Bro. David is a very well known Leicestershire & Rutland Freemason and has been the Inspector General in the Leicestershire & Rutland District of the Ancient and Accepted Rite (Rose Croix) for 33 years.

He is also a member of many other ‘degrees’ and in most of them he is a ‘Grand Officer’; he is also a very accomplished organist and in many Orders he holds the Office of

Organist.

My research has revealed that there are three other members of Lodges in the Province of Leicestershire & Rutland who may have attended the installation of the Grand Master in 1967 namely, W. Bro.’s N G Green, 4088; A J Cayless 6513; and S H Kendall 7164, but to my knowledge did not attend the Tercentenary Celebrations.

This does not include Brethren who have become joining members of Lodges in Leicestershire & Rutland after 1967!

Striking up a

Tune for the Province

As part of the Tercentenary celebrations, a procession of Masons passed through the City of Leicester on the way to the Catherdral, whilst this has been widely reported, did you know that the band also included Masons?

W. Bro. Ian Needham was asked by the Provincial Grand Master if he could put a band together to lead the procession.

Using members of his own band and then friends of W. Bro. Andy Chapman who play in local bands, a band was formed which seemed to be appreciated by all and made the march through the city more interesting and entertaining for those taking part and those watching.

Leicestershire and Rutland Annual Communication of

the Provincial Grand Lodge

Freemasons from all corners of Leicestershire and Rutland attended the Annual Communication of the Provincial Grand Lodge which was held on Friday 24th November 2017 at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester.

Many distinguished guests from other Provinces including the Provincial Grand Masters from six other Provinces and also the Chief Executive of the United Grand Lodge of England W. Bro. Dr. David Staples were warmly welcomed by the Provincial Grand Master.

The address to the Brethren from the Provincial Grand Master: Brethren all, what an unbelievable year this has been. Certainly the busiest year I and my Provincial Team have experienced since I became Provincial Grand Master in 2010. A busy year, an exciting year, a year for this Province to be proud of.

A year in which we have celebrated the Tercentenary of the formation of the first Grand Lodge in 1717.

How could those members of the four Lodges that met at the Goose and Gridiron Tavern in the shadow of St Paul’s Cathedral have realised what a momentous event they were undertaking. An event that we in this Province and Freemasons across the world would celebrate 300 years later.

I have always stressed during my period as Provincial Grand Master of the importance of enjoying our Freemasonry. How proud we should be of being members of a brotherhood that shares in our fundamental beliefs of honesty, integrity, fairness and tolerance or as they the founders would have said brotherly love, relief and truth. This magnificent year when once again, we have experienced the fellowship and friendship that exists in this Province and our Order generally.

experience their excitement and pleasure of becoming Freemasons both in this multi-cultural and multi faith Province in which we live. To see in them the enjoyment of its experience. To encourage them, both old and young, to take an active part in their Lodges. To involve their wives and partners in the social activities of our Lodges. To share in that enjoyment of being a member of this wonderful organisation. By sharing with their families, we can often ensure that their membership continues to flourish. That they feel part of the wider masonic community as we all do. Where the word “Freemason” indicates a person whose standards are the envy of others, are markers to be adhered to, Together with my Executive and the Provincial Team, I have visited many Lodges during the past year. Where Lodges have many prospective members wishing to share our experience. To whom we owe an obligation to grow their membership. To assist them and their families in time of need. To make them feel wanted. To make them want to share with us that experience, so evident during this Tercentenary Year. In the past three years, our membership has grown. This year it has gone down slightly. I have always warned about complacency. We must redouble our efforts to attract new members, to retain the interest of those we already have as members. These are uncertain times in our Country.

The pressures on our Brethren, their families, their employment are more intense than ever they have been.

We should show them the tolerance and help that they need to deal with these pressures.

Members of this Province will have received papers prepared by myself and my Deputy Provincial Grand Master on the formation in each Lodge of a “Lodge Care Committee”. This has been well received. A Committee of three or four members dedicated to look at all aspects of the life of the Lodge and to assist the Executive Officers where necessary. As I have said before, the Province will assist in every way possible, through various initiatives we have introduced over the last few years. The health and futures of your Lodges lie not solely with the Province, but in the hands of your members.

This Committee should consist of members, representative of the Lodge as a whole, not just concerned with the recruitment, retention and retrieval, however vital that is. To encourage greater participation in Lodge activities. To bring fun into our fund raising activities. To use the Lodge register. To contact those who do not attend for whatever reason. Resignations are still too high. The time to act is not to act when the resignation is delivered, it is often too late.

I mentioned the celebration of the Tercentenary and we have certainly celebrated in this Province.

This has been an exciting time for Freemasonry. The press and wider media interest has been very significant and the reports on our events have been almost entirely positive. There has been

Provincial NEWS behalf of the Province of presenting to The Dean, The Very Rev. David Monteith, a Dean’s Verge. It has been our custom as a Province to commemorate events in the history of the Cathedral with gifts. In the past, with a Bell and a Silver Ciborium. This gift was well received and will be a permanent reminder of our Tercentenary year.

Recently on October 31st, the Province was well represented at the Tercentenary Celebrations at the Albert Hall. Followed by the Tercentenary dinner at the Battersea Evolution. This was a magnificent celebration and all present felt truly proud of belonging to such a worldwide Organisation. It was splendidly organised and truly representative of many Countries and Fellow Constitutions.

genuine interest to know “what’s it all about”. Recently in October we were honoured by a visit from the Pro Grand Master Most. W. Bro. Peter Lowndes to officiate at the opening of the Memorial Wood in Bradgate Park, which was attended by almost 200 Brethren, their wives and families. A Memorial Wood in a beautiful setting, a Wood for quiet reflection, for all who wish to remember their loves ones. In the afternoon, the Pro Grand Master opened our Masonic Exhibition at the Newarke House Museum in Leicester which will remain open until the end of January 2018. This truly represents the history of Freemasonry in this Province. I hope you will all attend with your wives and families and particularly your friends.

More recently we had a Thanksgiving Service at Leicester Cathedral which was proceeded by a Procession through Centre of Leicester in full Regalia. The first such Procession since 1923. This was a wonderful day and clearly showed our place in the Community had been re-established. During the Service I had the honour on

Well Brethren, we now have to look forward to the future and build on the success of this year. We made a decision to donate any profits of our Tercentenary activities to the 2022 Festival for the Masonic Charitable Foundation. Whilst we have already raised a significant sum towards our target of £1.8 million, unfortunately the greater proportion of members, within the Province, are not yet contributing. We all know that over 70% of Brethren support the Leicestershire and Rutland Masonic Charity Association. I must look to you all to support the Festival.

The work of the Foundation is paramount and demonstrates in a practical form the Charitable work of our organisation. The Charity Association gave over £140,000 to local non masonic charities last year and whilst I am pleased that Lodges give their support to local non Masonic Charities, I do feel that the greater proportion of our Charitable activities up until 2022 should go to the Festival. Please support your Charity and Festival Stewards in their valuable work. The general public are staggered at how generous Freemasons are both locally,

nationally and internationally. The work of our Charities epitomises all that is good in Freemasonry.

As always I give my thanks to the volunteers at out Headquarters and all our Masonic Centres which we all have great pride in. I have since becoming Provincial Grand Master given my Certificate of Merit to several Brethren for outstanding Service to their Centres or this Province. I invite anyone in this Province to put forward the name of a Brother who has given distinguished Service and I will consider it.

My thanks go to the Charity Office, Registrar and Yearbook Office, the Hall Management Team, to my Financial Director W. Bro. Brian Carruthers and to the dedicated staff of both Freemasons Hall and Devonshire Place.

My especial thanks go to my Provincial Grand Secretary, W. Bro. Kelvin Johnson, to W. Bro. Ian Nesbitt, the Assistant Provincial Grand Secretary and W. Bro. Tony Webb and Richard Sutton in the Secretariat including our Personal Assistant, Sandy Tanna. As I said at the beginning, this has been an incredibly busy year and you the Secretariat have borne the bulk of the additional work. To the Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies, W. Bro. Paul Roberts and his team, ably supported by the members of the Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge. My sincere thanks to you all for the arrangements today and throughout the year.

Finally, my thanks go to the Brethren of this Province, to their wives, partners and families for all their support that they and you give to me and this Province. I have said before, it is a privilege for me to be a Freemason and above all to be your leader in this Province. Thank you for your kindness and support and please continue to enjoy your Freemasonry. Calling all Cyclists – Ride to raise funds for the 2022 Festival and Rainbows

Following on from our epic 300 mile ride last year, the Masonic Cycling Association are organising something slightly shorter for 2018 to raise funds for the 2022 Festival and Rainbows Hospice at Loughborough The Masonic Cycling Association are planning a two-day ride of approximately 150 miles on the weekend of 29th & 30th September 2018. Our route will be similar to the first and last day of our 2017 ride, setting off from Freemasons’ Hall Leicester and visiting the Masonic Centres on the east side of the county one day, and those on the west on the other day. The final route is still being worked out with

the intention of stopping overnight in either north Northamptonshire as we did last year, or somewhere near Loughborough depending on final numbers, accommodation availability and the final route.

So far, they have around eight riders and looking for others to join us.

The ride is open to all brethren, their wives, partners and friends so please spread the word, the more riders they have the better. They all had a

thoroughly enjoyable time last year and lots of fun whilst fundraising for two incredibly worthwhile causes.

Bro. Jock Keenan, Enderby Lodge No. 5061, said: “We arrived in fine fettle and warmly mixed with the opposition before the match. They spoke fondly of their Club member George Britton whom the match was being played in his memory.”

No less than 34 players had turned up to play in the Sheffield side, with a huge crowd on the side line cheering them on including many Light Blues supporters.

The first 20 minutes was very one sided with Sheffield throwing everything at the Light Blues at one point swapping all the players to give everyone a breather!

Sheffield were first to trouble the score board with a well worked try coming from a very rugged back row.

Not to be out shone, the Light Blues replied with some excellent attacking play of their own which after a lot of effort and persistence was rewarded with a well taken try by the mercurial Bro. Karl Harris, St James’ Lodge No. 8478. The conversion was

well taken by one of the three nonmasonic guests, Reilly Vaughn of the Vipers RFC. Sheffield made another team swap at half time and took to the field full of gusto! Once again each Sheffield attack was ably soaked up by the Light Blue defence.

In the very last minute of the match the Light Blues Captain and scrum half Bro. Jock Keenan, passed the ball to Bro. Karl Harris who proceeded to

break the defensive line of Sheffield and go in under the posts for another try making the final score 5-14.

Bro. Jock said: “Sheffield Tigers were superb hosts, Bro. Karl and our Man of the Match W. Bro. Chris Lucas of Rothley Temple Lodge No.7801 were both singled out for special praise.

We do hope the Tigers will return to our home ground at the Vipers in May for a return fixture.” He continued: “Well done to all the non-members that took part in the match, your help is always very much appreciated. To the Brethren that took part, I thank you from the bottom of my heart, for your continued commitment.”

New President

The new President is W. Bro. Ashok Patel of Albert Edward Lodge No. 1560, elected at the Annual General Meeting of the Association on the 12th January 2018. At this Meeting a presentation was made to the retiring Hon. Treasurer of the Association, W. Bro. John Carter. He was presented with a golf statuette, to record the appreciation of the members for his conscientious work over the last 30 years.

Leicestershire & Rutland form a new branch of the

Masonic Fishing Charity

The first full meeting of the newly formed Leicestershire and Rutland Branch of the Masonic Fishing Charity took place during the evening of the 11th March to discuss the aims of the team and the forthcoming season.

The Branch Chairman, Bro. David Carter, opened proceedings with an explanation of how the newly formed branch had been set up, together with an update of what had been achieved so far. Development of an initial plan was the first port of call, along with an agreement that events would be developed around coarse fishing and not fly fishing.

Whilst initially limiting the number of participants to ten, the planning soon turned to the fund raising efforts and initiatives that are being devised. A venue is also being secured, which is at the Mill on the Soar Restaurant & Hotel at Broughton Astley During the meeting, Graham Snell of the MFC gave two presentations on the purpose, aims and operating model of the MFC (National/Regional/Branch, etc.), and also how to run an MTSFC Branch event.

However prior to giving his presentations, Graham first explained that the MFC at both national and branch level, is a Masonic initiative. This means that, having its own autonomous management structure, whilst it seeks and enjoys the close co-operation and support of UGLE , it is not directly controlled by any of them.

Furthermore, whilst the various branches are expected to follow the requirements, guidance and operating model of the main charity, especially for insurance purposes, they are entirely responsible for raising

Guthlaxton Lodge 7717

Visits two Dutch Lodges

Four members of Guthlaxton Lodge 7717, Worshipful Master W. Bro. Carl Ackers, W. Bro. Dorian McKillop, Bros. John Sanderson and Christopher Warden, braved the Arctic conditions to visit two Dutch lodges in the lovely city of Apeldoorn.

The trip was not just about Masonry as the group took the opportunity to visit Arnhem (Film – A Bridge Too Far) and also Osterbeek, where there is an excellent, and not often visited museum, which if in the area is well worth a visit.

Leaving on a snowy morning the party flew into Amsterdam Schiphol Airport then made their way, via a hire car, to Apeldoorn.

The reason for the visit was a promise W. Bro. Carl Ackers made to a past Guthlaxton Lodge member, Bro. Tim Eijjelmeijer, who had to move to Bath for work, that he would visit his Mother lodge, and his father’s lodge, who meet on consecutive evenings.

On the 6th February 2018 we visited Leifde en Trouw Lodge and then on the 7th February De Gulden Regel Lodge, which are Tim’s father’s lodge and Mother lodge respectively.

The warmth of the welcome at both lodges was overwhelming with all four English Brethren being welcomed like returning heroes.

The ceremony on the Tuesday evening was a second-degree ceremony, which while it had echoes of Emulation Ritual, was very different and contained elements of both the Mark and Royal Arch degrees.

The ceremony on the Wednesday evening was an initiation, in a revised Scottish Rite, adapted in France and then translated to Dutch.

There are only two Dutch Lodges in the Netherlands currently working this ritual.

This was very different, and contained large elements of Alchemy and Gnostic references, which was fascinating and wetted the appetite of the English Brethren to see the ceremony performed in English.

Such was the success of the visit, the Dutch Brethren are planning a return visit to Leicester, via Tim’s Lodge in Bath, in 2019 with plans to make the reverse trips every two years.

A trip to Scotland is currently in the planning to Killwining Lodge No 0 (The Mother Lodge of Scotland) and Rosslyn St. Clair Lodge No 606, which will satisfy a long-held desire to visit Rosslyn Chapel, which will be in early 2019.

W. Bro. Carl Ackers presented engraved tankards to both lodges to commemorate the inaugural visit, while the Guthlaxton Brethren received engraved ‘firing glasses’ from each lodge in return.

Worshipful Master of Wiclif Lodge No. 3078 to run in

the London Marathon With such a daunting yet noble task ahead, that of running the London Marathon, W. Bro. Scott Bailye gave this report.

“As the Worshipful Master of the Wycliffe lodge No. 3078, during my year in the chair my chosen charity is Alzheimer’s Research UK. Due to my wife Glenda’s father having the early stages of Alzheimer’s and us living with his illness in the family for the last 3 years, we both decided that we would run the London Marathon together because we wanted to do something to help others with the illness

We are both committed in many ways with strict diet and training regimes in between work and learning Masonic ritual. We will be running the marathon on Sunday April 22nd being 2 of only 49,000 runners selected out of over 350,000 applicants this year. With £5,000 to raise we are hosting many events during the year including a summer BBQ, a themed disco and also a James Bond gala dinner & dance.

A family tradition It was a special evening in Syston, as the Humberstone Lodge No. 7744 met to initiate the third generation of a family of Masons, all belonging to the same lodge.

As shown in the picture, Bro. Robert Forsyth, who is the Initiate and his grandfather is seen on the left, with Bro. Chris Freeman, the initiates father and the new initiate Bro. Spencer Freeman alongside the Master, W. Bro. Paul Prendergast Spencer was only 19 at time of his initiation, therefore a special dispensation was requested and granted by the Provincial Grand Master. Spencer is really enjoying his masonry and has shown an aptitude for really embracing our ceremonies, as demonstrated by his excellent performance in presenting the First degree working tools to the Master at his installation.

Enderby lodge No. 5601 discuss the Masonic

History of their first Master In early November 2017 the Secretary of Enderby Lodge No. 5601 was contacted by Simon Green who is the great grandson of Henry Grace, the first Worshipful Master of the Lodge, which was consecrated in January 1929. Simon was enquiring as to whether it would be possible for Henry Grace’s granddaughter, Elizabeth Chapman OBE, to visit the Lodge to learn more about her grandfather’s masonic activities.

A visit was quickly organised and on Friday 17th November 2017 W. Bros Tony Walne, Michael England, David Hurst and David Turner hosted a meeting at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester with Elizabeth and Simon. The Hall kindly served coffee, tea and biscuits in the Front Lounge. Over the next two hours the group shared their knowledge of Henry. Elizabeth and Simon had brought many family photographs and other information with them which enabled the brethren to fill in several gaps in the Lodge’s history.

Henry Jinks Grace was a distinguished Freemason, being a Grand Officer and Provincial Grand Treasurer from 1924 to his death in 1932. He was initiated in Granite Lodge in 1886 and when in 1928 the Lodge proposed to form a new Lodge they wanted to name it after Henry, Unfortunately Grand Lodge would not accept the proposed name, nor many others including Pen Craig, the name of Henry’s house in Enderby. However

a direct link between Henry and the new Lodge was established by the design of the Lodge Banner, and subsequently the Past Master’s jewel, which Elizabeth was thrilled to see samples of the jewels depicting the house, since it was where she was born and lived there until the age of seven. The brethren were delighted to hear of Elizabeth’s experience of living in the house and the description of her grandfather.

Although Elizabeth is 92 and “not as mobile as she’d like to be” she was keen to see where her grandfather

practiced his freemasonry.

Therefore, following the discussions, she was given a conducted tour of the old part of the building including the Holmes Lodge Room where Enderby Lodge have met since 1929.

A most enjoyable morning concluded with photographs and the presentation to Elizabeth of a bouquet of flowers, a box of Belgian chocolates and copies of two Enderby Lodge history books written by W. Bro. Michael England.

100 Years of continued family membership of the

Lodge of the Golden Fleece

On the 16th October 2017, W. Bro. Michael Kind celebrated 100 years of continued family membership of the Lodge of the Golden Fleece No. 2081. His Great Grandfather W. Bro. Thomas John Gooding joined the Lodge on the 15th October 1917, having formerly been a member of the Carl Lindenberg Lodge in Frankfort on Main.

All five members of the family have served as Masters of the Lodge: W. Bro. T Gooding 1931 W. Bro. Albert O Ward 1945 W. Bro. Cyril Kind 1976 W. Bro. Paul G Kind 1987 W. Bro. J Michael J Kind 1988 W. Bro. Kind, on behalf of his whole family now past, presented an engraved DC’s Wand to the Lodge, to be known as “The Anniversary Wand” to be used on all ceremonial occasions by the Lodge.

W. Bro. Kind also stated that a very special relationship his

family has always had with the Lodge’s younger daughter Lodge, the Lodge of the Argonauts No 8210, his Grandfather, W. Bro. Ward having been a principal Founder member, and in view of their 50 Year celebration in March 2018, has also granted full use of the wand to that Lodge, to further mark the occasion.

Symposium

to celebrate 300 years of Freemasonry The Lodge of Research No. 2429 held a Symposium to celebrate Three Hundred Years of Leicestershire Freemasonry at their Lodge meeting on Monday 22nd January 2018 at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester.

and additionally reflecting on the Provincial Grand Master during 1870-1873, R.W. Bro. William Kelly, emphasising how unusual his career was.

W. Bro. Aubrey Newman OSM PJGD put together four exciting short papers which were delivered by members of the Lodge. The Master, W. Bro. Alf Sharman presided over the Symposium which was very well received by the members and visitors who were in attendance.

The Symposium continued with W. Bro. David Herbert speaking about the Duke of Sussex who was the first Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England and the record of one famous Lodge meeting at which a prominent Leicester Freemason also played a significant part.

The Symposium was started by W. Bro. Andy Green who explored the formation and demise of the early and short-lived lodges across Leicestershire which form the very foundation of the lodges existing today in the Province.

W. Bro. Aubrey Newman then focussed on the various Provincial Grand Masters of Leicestershire and Rutland, discussing how far they reflected the ways in which there have been changes in the “ruling social classes” in the Province,

Finally, W. Bro. Don Peacock picked out some of the highlights of the transition from the Provincial headquarters at Halford Street, Leicester to the new Hall at London Road highlighting how the move, although very successful, also brought with it a number of problems that had to be addressed.

The Provincial Grand Master, R.W. Bro. David Hagger then gave a summary address: “Last year was a momentous year for Freemasonry with the celebration of the Tercentenary of the founding of the First Grand Lodge.”

He continued: “I am therefore pleased to hear the papers celebrating 300 years of Freemasonry in this Province and to congratulate the Brethren who delivered them this evening.

A splendid example of dedicated research, which places this Province, particularly this Lodge at the forefront of this research. We can be extremely proud of their efforts and may I congratulate all involved in arranging this evening. Clearly a lot of hard work and research has been involved and we are the beneficiaries of it.”

Beacon Lodge

700th meeting Beacon Lodge No. 5208 which meets at the Masonic Hall in Loughborough held their 700th meeting on the 11th January 2018.

To mark this special occasion, the Provincial Grand Master, R.W. Bro. David Hagger along with the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, V.W. Bro. Peter Kinder and the rest of the Provincial Grand Officers attended the landmark meeting.

The Lodge Room was packed full to witness a Passing Ceremony which was superbly conducted by the Brethren of Beacon Lodge including Bro. Joshua Symonds, who at 20 years old, gave his first piece of ritual. To celebrate the 700th meeting, W. Bro. Graham Thorpe gave a short and interesting Oration on the history of the Lodge.

During the meeting, the Provincial Grand Master presented the Lodge with a gold Founders Jewel for the Beacon Lodge which was found hidden in the Masonic Hall during recent maintenance.

Over 120 sat down at the Festive Board for a Burns Supper where W. Bro. Geoff Searson Provincial Junior Grand Warden, who was suitably attired in a kilt, recited the ‘Address to a Haggis’.

Race Night in Ashby

Ferrers and Ivanhoe Lodge held a hugely successful ‘Race Night’ in Ashby on Friday 26th January 2018 to raise funds for the 2022 Festival.

The Lyric Rooms was a most suitable venue for hosting the occasion, which saw 63 ‘punters’ trying to guess which horse or dog was likely to win each of 9 filmed races. The evening was hosted by W. Bro. John Starkey who explained the process and kept everyone informed of the winning prize money.

A tasty Cottage Pie supper was served part way through the evening along with a selection of desserts.

The whole event was thoroughly enjoyed by all and at the end of the evening the Master of the Lodge W. Bro. Terry Hueck announced that 22

the generosity of both sponsors and race goers had resulted in raising £1,000.00 for the 2022 Festival.

A further £50.00 was been donated to Ashby Rotary Club, who supplied the films.

John Starkey” The Masonic Charitable Foundation is funded entirely through the generosity of Freemasons and their families and is one of the largest grant-making charities in the country and last

The Leicestershire and Rutland 2022 Festival aims to raise £1.8 million by 2022 for the Masonic Charitable Foundation.

Recruitment Activity at Loughborough

University Students’ Bazaar ‘Inside The Freemasons’, which was shown on the digital screen, and this clearly attracted students to stop and watch, with the added benefit of encouraging several of them to start asking questions. Attendance gradually increased becoming very busy in the afternoon with thousands of people passing through the sports hall. In anticipation of ladies venturing onto the stand, the Master had printed business cards with the contact details of a ladies Freemasons’ Lodge in Leicester which were handed out accordingly. Interesting discussions were had, and at the end of the day 35 students invitation cards were handed out to invite them to come to the Masonic Hall the following Saturday to meet other Brethen over a ‘pizza and pint’.

On Sunday 1st October 2017 W. Bros. David Lathrope and Chris Butlin and Bro. James Hare arrived at Loughborough University, to set up for the Students Bazaar, with the Master W. Bro. Ilias Macheridis arriving not long after. W. Bro. David had downloaded a thirty second loop of material from the recently televised programme,

Saturday arrived, and with David Brown, David Lathrope, Mark Bigan, Tony Andrews, Digby Lund and the Secretary in attendance they waited expectantly for any students to arrive. In fact eight students arrived, and after a drink and a slice of pizza they all went upstairs where the students were given a short resumé about the history of Freemasonry, its structure, the Officers, the aims & benefits of being a Freemason and most importantly the fees involved in becoming a Freemason.

As a result of all their work, five students completed an application form, and following positive panel interviews a week later, all of them are now scheduled to be Initiated into the Lodge. This was felt to be a positive result, which they hope, will lead to further applications from students in the future.

The

Light Blue Club Visit Rome

The Rome Trip took place on the 23rd to the 25th February 2018, visiting the Keats & Shelley Lodge, No.1

on the Third Degree. The Lodge was then closed in all three degrees which made for something a little different to what we usually see.

Most of us were travelling on the 6.25am flight from London Stansted so as to maximise the time available on the first day. This limited the conversation between our merry band of travellers as most took advantage of catching up with sleep before arriving in Rome.

On our arrival the weather was somewhat inclement and to be later described during our visit as some of the worst rainfall they had seen in the city. The beautiful cobbled streets had turned into urban waterways with small rivers running down the middle of the pedestrian walkways. The addition of surprise of ankle deep puddles and narrow streets with nowhere to hide from cars spraying the water in a manner somewhat similar to the finest fountains all added to the moist start to our trip.

Did we let this dampen our spirits?

Of course not, instead we set off from our hotel with the first stop being the Trevi Fountain, such a magnificent structure and hard to believe it not only lived up to expectations but exceeded them.

A few coins were thrown into the fountain to ensure that we would return to this fabulous city, and we were on route to our next stop of the day, The Colosseum.

Just across from the Pantheon on the Piazza della Rotonda, provided the locations for the pre-dinner drinks, followed by a short stroll to a small family run restaurant where most enjoyed some of the authentic Italian pizza. This was rounded off by a visit to Rome’s top rated gelato store where we were spoilt with a wide range of gelato flavours and a vast counter of pastries and desserts.

Day two started at a much more civilised time as we met in the Piazza in front of the Pantheon at 10am in order to travel to the Keats & Shelley Lodge for their late morning start of 11am. The heavy rain of the previous day had calmed to a gentle intermittent drizzle. This made for a more pleasant day for the partners that were in attendance who enjoyed a day of both culture & shopping.

On arriving at the Masonic hall we were welcomed in by the Brethren, a mixture of expats, members still in the UK, and Italians. After signing the guest book we entered the small but perfectly formed lodge room.

A ceiling of small lights created a great starscape with lighting around the edge representing the sunrise & sunset, and the night & day. It made for an impressive sight. The meeting itself was in English and very recognisable. The order of the day was to test a joining member LeicsFreemasons

After the meeting we all enjoyed a fairly informal festive board of traditional Italian fayre which had been prepared by a Brother of the lodge. There was chicken with peas, pork in breadcrumbs, an Italian meatloaf and of course a tiramisu for dessert. All washed down with wine, water & Coca Cola!

During the meal we were invited to join the Keats & Shelley Brethren at a second Lodge starting at 3pm that same afternoon. A musical Lodge of Research, Santa Cecilia, No.180.

This truly was a different experience with the entire ceremony and lecture in Italian. Once the lecture, translated as, “Orpheus and the trial, the story of a Thracian singer who became a Mason”, was complete there was further discussion before the Lodge was closed.

After returning to our respective hotels and freshening up we joined the Brethren of Keats & Shelley Lodge in a local Irish Bar for what was a most enjoyable evening. For some this wound down around 11.30pm whilst others ventured out to enjoy the full Rome nightlife, returning to the hotel around 5am.

Festival Chairman Dear Brethren, As you are aware our Province is engaged in an appeal for the Masonic Charitable Foundation concluding in 2022.

The 2022 Festival involves and hopefully touches each & every Brother in the Province. It is appropriate to remember over the last ten years Brethren and their families within the Province of Leicestershire & Rutland have received benefits from the Masonic Charitable Foundation in excess of £3m. We define a strong family connection as a Freemason’s: • married or life partner • widow or surviving partner; • divorced or separated partner; • child (under 25) in full-time education; and • grandchild (under 25) in full-time education.

Other relations may also qualify for support if they can demonstrate that a Freemason has provided them with significant financial or physical support.

Those seeking support towards Masonic care homes may also include: • parents; • grandparents; • relatives in-law; • siblings; and • other relations financially or physically reliant on a Freemason.

Financial, health or family need Those seeking support must be able to demonstrate a need for our grants and services. Many needs follow a decrease in household income or they may arise because of a lifechanging event such as a medical diagnosis, changing care needs, family breakdown or the death of a 28

An appropriate professional such as a consultant, dentist or occupational therapist must have confirmed a health or care need. Those seeking support for health needs must also show evidence of an unreasonable wait for, or lack of, NHS treatment or Local Authority care or support.

A prior assessment with a dentist is always required for those seeking support for dental treatments. Only the most cost effective suitable solution will be considered and dental treatments which are purely cosmetic will not be considered.

In some cases, we can fund private medical consultations or occupational therapist assessments to confirm a diagnosis or understand a person’s care requirements. By doing so, we can improve access to treatment and services and obtain the information we may need during our application process should you need further support.

Financial test To demonstrate that any support required is beyond their financial means, those seeking our support must complete an assessment of household income, expenditure, savings and capital.

When Craig’s wife died 10 years ago, he was faced with life as a single parent to their two children, Ella and Oliver. With just one income, money was tight and Craig struggled to provide for the family. Eventually, one of his Brethren put him in touch with the Masonic Charitable Foundation.

My little lad in particular struggled with school after my wife passed and I worried about how I would support him through such a difficult time. Once I got in touch with the MCF, the process was really easy and the thing that made a big difference was that I didn’t have to chase them for anything. I was running on adrenalin and the MCF made it that little bit easier for us as a family right from the start. Its been 10 years and I still miss my wife every day but the support we received from the MCF has been invaluable – you really couldn’t put a price on it

Masons help local

Air Ambulance On Wednesday 8th November, some of the Greetham Gathering’s Committee and helpers met the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance Service (DLRAA) at the Air Ambulance base at East Midlands Airport, to present a cheque in support of the DRLAA. In 2014, the first year of the Greetham Gatherings, the committee were able to present a cheque to the DRLAA for £450.

In 2015 the donation was £1,500.

In 2016 the donation was £2,000.

In 2017 we hoped to exceed the previous year’s amount, but this has proven to be much more challenging. “We had some great sunny days where record attendances were recorded, but in September we had dreadful weather and that, understandably, put a dent in our fund raising hopes. However we still had our most successful year yet for the Gatherings, and with all the extra support from the public, the

committee were delighted to present a cheque for £2,200 to the DLRAA. The Greetham Gathering is an informal get-together for enthusiasts of vintage and classic vehicles, and is held each 3rd Thursday of the months of May to September, from 5pm till dusk. The Gatherings are held at Greetham Community Centre, Great Lane, Greetham, LE15 7NG, and all are welcome – with or without

classic or vintage vehicles. Food and drinks are available, and we look forward to your continued support.

Installation and PGC

On Thursday 22nd March 2018, members of the Royal Arch gathered at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester, for the Installation of Excellent Companion Noel C. Manby as the Grand Superintendent in and over the Province of Leicestershire and Rutland.

A bright morning in Leicester greeted the early risers, the Provincial Grand Stewards to assist with the logistics of the day and the marshalling of the car park, and those who were to receive appointments and promotion as they gathered for a rehearsal, not to mention the catering staff and of course the Royal Arch Executive to put the finishing touches to what would be a very busy day.

Amongst the many guests and visitors, was the Most Excellent Companion Gareth Jones, the Third Grand Principal, who along with his team and able assistants were to perform the Ceremony of Installation. The companions of the Province along with all visiting Companions were seated in the Oliver Lodge room by 2pm, and by 2.30pm the ceremony of installation had begun.

The Third Grand Principal opened the Provincial Grand Chapter, assisted by the Officers of Supreme Grand Chapter, afterwards he addressed all those present

to state the objectives of the meeting. The Grand Director of Ceremonies then submitted the Grand Superintendent designates Patent of Appointment to the Third Grand Principal for inspection. A delegation was formed to introduce the Grand Superintendent Designate to the waiting audience. Excellent Companion Noel, after taking his obligation was invested and placed in the Chair.

The proceedings followed with the appointments and investiture of Excellent Companion John Peberdy as Second Provincial Grand Principal, Excellent Companion Christopher Packham as Third Provincial Grand Principal, and Excellent Companion Paul C. Wallace as Deputy Grand Superintendent.

The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent presented his address to those present, before calling off the Provincial Grand Chapter to allow for refreshments and also the preparations for the next part of the day to take effect.

At 5pm the Provincial Grand Chapter was called on, and proceedings continued with the roll of Chapters being called, and various reports being given and adopted.

The next order of business was to invest the Provincial Grand Officers for 2018-19.

Having completed the order of business for the day, the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent and his officers closed the Provincial Grand Chapter to retire to the festive board.

At the festive board, those Companions dining were treated to an excellent meal with superb company, a very fitting finish to a thoroughly enjoyable day.

Royal Arch Church Service 15th October 2017

This year’s annual Royal Arch Church Service, was held at 4.00 pm on Sunday 15th October 2017 at its traditional venue, St. Mary de Castro, in Leicester.

The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, Peter Kinder, was supported by his Deputy, Noel Manby, and the Second and Third Provincial Grand Principals, Paul Wallace and John Peberdy. The Grand Chaplain and Past Third Provincial Grand Principal, the Revd.

Canon Michael Wilson, took the service and preached the Sermon.

hymns with gusto. The readings this year were given by E. Comps.

Stephen Smith (Temperantia Chapter No.4088), Ian Walker (Knights of Malta Chapter No.50), Paul Turner (Holmes Chapter No.4656) and David Lewin (Reynard Chapter No.9285).

After the Service, wine and soft drinks were provided by the Scribes’ Office and served by the Provincial Grand Stewards. This gave the Companions the opportunity of meeting the ‘Rulers’ and mingling with the other Companions.

The attendance was excellent, with over 100 present, and the collection was donated to the Church’s restoration fund.

On Friday, 26th January, at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester, the Royal Arch Dinner Dance attracted a full house of Companions and their ladies for an evening of good food, good company and musical entertainment. This year the theme was Scottish, as the evening was so close to ‘Burns’ Night’ (the 25th January was his birthday).

As a final thanks to Sandie Kinder, she was presented with a large bouquet of flowers by Second Provincial Grand Principal, E.Comp. Paul Wallace and Scribe E, E.Comp David Turner.

After the meal, many danced away the evening to one of the Paul Tamsan Singers, a Tamla Motown Soul Singer, Hayley Ria. East Goscote

Chapter Centenary Celebrations On Wednesday 29th November 2017, the East Goscote Chapter No. 2865 celebrated its centenary. It was exactly 100 years, to the day, that the Chapter was consecrated on 29th November 1917 - an unusual event in the middle of the Great War - and 31 years since St George’s Chapter No. 1560 had been concecrated in 1886.

Although the Chapter was consecrated, and still meets in Syston, by dispensation, this meeting was transferred to the Holmes Chapter Room at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester.

Officers made a team visit to the Chapter, together with a number of Supreme Grand Chapter Officers. All together there were over 80 Companions at the meeting - and 75 dined at the Festive Board.

At the end of the evening, the Grand Superintendent presented the Most Excellent

with the first PZ’s Jewel, mounted in a glazed frame, with an explanation of the reason why the Jewel bore the inscription Chapter No 1130.

Comp. Peter Kinder, made a presentation of a framed colour photograph of the Founders of Beacon Chapter, taken at the Consecration Ceremony in 1974.

E. Comp. Peter explained that he had been privileged to have been asked by Right Worshipful Brother Gayton C. Taylor, formerly the Provincial Grand Master of Leicestershire and Rutland, to take possession of Brother Gayton’s masonic memorabilia. Whilst going through the memorabilia he found a photograph which he recognised as being that of the founders of Beacon Chapter. Appreciating the value of this photograph as an historic record E. Comp. Peter set about identifying all the Companions appearing in the photograph.

Having successfully completed the identification E. Comp. Peter had the photograph framed and mounted complete with the names of all those appearing. Further appreciating that the value of the photograph was also in it being displayed at Loughborough, he made a special private visit to Beacon Chapter to present it to the Principals of the Chapter. During the presentation, E. Comp. Peter read out in full the Address which the then Grand Superintendent E. Comp Brig. C. B. S. Morley had given at the Consecration on the 21st October 1974., which had been extracted from the Chapter records, by Scribe E. Comp. David Highton.

The Thomas Dunckerley silver plate,

Donald A Peacock PAGDC By one of those strange chances of fate I was browsing the online catalogue of an antique shop one day late summer 2017 when my eye was immediately drawn to a silver plate (or waiter) with the Thomas Dunckerley coat of arms. There was a full description and the item seemed to me to be a very important object to acquire for the Museum at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester.

The ME Grand Superintendent, E. Comp Peter Kinder, was made aware of it and through him the Provincial Chapter kindly agreed to acquire it and place it on loan in the Museum to be available to be viewed by all local Freemasons and any visitors. The plate would have stood in the hall of Thomas Dunckerley and visitors would have placed their visiting cards on it.

Who then was Thomas Dunckerley and why was he so important in the history of Freemasonry? Thomas was appointed Provincial Grand Master of 9 Provincial Grand Lodges under the Premier Grand Lodge, Grand Superintendent of 18 Provinces from 1780 onwards. He was appointed to the Past Rank of Senior Grand Warden in 1795 and was First Grand Principal in the Grand Chapter (Moderns) in 1791. He was also prominent figure in the introduction of the Mark Degree into England in the early period and was Grand Commander of the Diluvian Order of the Royal Ark and Mark Mariners in 1794. He was requested to be Grand Master of the Knights Templar in 1791 and enthusiastically promoted that Order.

That he was the companion and close acquaintance of several Royal Princes in his later years is beyond doubt. What is open to question is his claim that he was the illegitimate son of the Prince of Wales (the son of King George II who died before coming to the throne, and hence the half-brother to King George III) and the debate rumbles on. The silver plate shows the Royal arms with the baton sinister showing that he was descended from the Royal family illegitimately.

He had no compunction in using this as a seal and on the frontispiece of his books and it would no doubt

have been widely discussed at the time. In recent times Professor Summers has produced a paper and then a book and discounts this royal descent. Others still believe the story and I leave it for the interested Freemason to make his own study of the subject.

The Royal coat of arms is flanked by two figures representing the military achievements of Thomas Dunckerley. He ran away to sea at an early age and soon became a Warrant Gunner and Teacher on board a succession of vessels. The sailor on the left carries a linstock; which would be used to ignite the cannon. The soldier on the right refers to his service as an officer in the local militia after leaving the Royal Navy.

What is undoubtedly true is that this artefact is an important legacy of a remarkable Freemason who was one of the leading figures in Masonry in the latter part of the eighteenth century. Very few objects came down from his estate because he left very little but a silver plate with his coat of arms was specifically mentioned and I believe this to be the very plate and as such we are indeed privileged to provide it with a place of honour in Leicester.

Visit to Rutland RAM On the 10th January 2018, the Provincial Grand Master, R.W. Bro. Phillip Mann, accompanied by the Officers of Provincial Grand Lodge, made an official visit to the Rutland Lodge of RAM No. 1051.

On this occasion, the Provincial Grand Master accepted the Chair when it was offered by the Commander, W. Bro. Derek Andrews. He then Elevated Bros. Brian Gibbins and Leslie Dobie with the assistance of his team.

The relevance of the ceremony was explained by the Deputy PGM, W. Bro. Don Peacock, the Working tools by W. Bro. Peter Gibson -Leitch and the Address was given by W. Bro. Keith Harkness. The Provincial Senior

Warden, W. Bro. Brian Golland explained the Nine steps. The Provincial Grand Master also had the pleasant duty of presenting a Grand Lodge Certificate to Bro. David Alcraft.

The evening was completed with an excellent Festive board, with good food and enjoyable company.

St. George’s Lodge No. 1133 – Advancee On Wednesday 3rd January 2018, Bro. Nitesh Bhundia was Advanced into the St. George’s Lodge of MMM by the Master, Bro. Christopher Packham and his team of officers.

It was indeed an excellent ceremony and the candidate responded positively throughout, ably guided by the Senior Deacon, Bro. Robert Wood. The relevance of the ceremony was delivered by W.

Stony Gate Mark Valentine evening

On the evening of Saturday 10th February 2018, the Stony Gate Mark Lodge held their annual Valentine evening at the Scraptoft Golf club. The Assistant Grand Master, R.W. Bro. Stephen Davison and the Provincial Grand Master, R.W. Bro. Phillip Mann, were both in attendance, a record 133 guests in all. The raffle raised £700 which

was donated to the Provincial Grand Master’s Discretionary Fund. The evening was a great success with good food and excellent company.

Thanks go to the organiser, W. Bro. Ian Needham and all those who assisted him. Also, to the Quiz organiser, Bro. Phillip Wood, who produced a colourful booklet for each table to fill in.

A fifty years’ service to Masonry certificate was presented by by W. Bro. Steven Davison to W. Bro. Richard Brocklehurst of the Lodge of Gratitude on Friday the 22nd December, 2017. W. Bro. Richard was initiated on the 22nd December, 1967 as a Lewis, and it was his father W. Bro. Reginald Brocklehurst who gave the charge on that particular occasion.

W. Bro. John Coleman has completed 50 years membership of The Lodge of the Golden Fleece No.2081 where he was initiated on 18th September 1967 and became Master on 19th February 1983.

50 Year Certificate

After attaining the chair of King Solomon in October 1984, Richard was immediately appointed Treasurer the year after, a position in the Lodge which he held for many years.

W. Bro. Richard developed and introduced the Lodge website and continues to service this at the present time. He was also a founder member of the reconstituted Union Lodge of Instruction and was Treasurer there for a number of years. Outside of Freemasonry, he is a volunteer at LOROS and also at The Bridge which is a shelter for the homeless of Leicester.

He became a founder member of The Rotary Lodge No.9158 in 1985 and of The Derek Buswell Lodge of Provincial Grand Stewards No.9705 in 2000, becoming its Master in 2005.

He has received various honours in Provincial Grand Lodge, ultimately being promoted to PPJGW in 2006.

He was exalted in Gartree Chapter No.7778 on 8th February 1977, became MEZ in 1988 and has received various honours in Provincial Grand Chapter, ultimately being promoted to PPGSN in 2009. He is also a member of the Bishop Segrave Chapter RC No.614, becoming MWS in 2002.
