PGM 2015 Address Brethren All, Another year has flown by in my term as Provincial Grand Master. My Executive Team and I endeavour for one of us to visit each of our 76 Lodges once every three years. This on the face of it does not appear a difficult task but with visits to present 50 and 60 year Certificates which appear to be increasing, with visits to celebrate Lodge Anniversaries, Grand Lodge and Supreme Grand Chapter, our 18 month’s diary seem to fill very quickly.

Membership I mentioned last year how proud I was to see the Fellowship and Friendship that exists in our Fraternity, not only between our older members but also the numerous young men who have decided to join. I always stress to them that great importance of enjoying their Freemasonry, of enjoying the camaraderie that exists in our Lodges. Personally I have always believed that being a Freemason is a privilege, a privilege that is not open to everyone.

Our standards of behaviour, our commitment to our families, our business activities, our commitment to our Country and communities are not achievable by everyone but I am sure that if we as a body of men, maintain our standards of behaviour, maintain our commitment to our families, to the community we live in, not only will Freemasonry survive in this troubled world, but endure and moreover become more successful in the years ahead while attracting both young and old to our Order. I think “attracting” is the best way to describe bringing in new Masons.

Not only do we have to have a firm commitment to both our existing and particularly our new members, not only do we have to have Masonic Buildings that attracts new members and their wives and partners, we have to sustain the initial attraction by making a visit to their Lodges something that they will look

forward to every month. An opportunity every month to share that friendship and brotherly love which I believe is to some extent unique in Freemasonry.

I mentioned last year the formation of the Membership Focus Group in London and the awareness amongst our leaders of the need to stem the loss of members of all age groups within our fraternity. This work has progressed and quite frankly exciting times lie ahead if the work being carried out leads to successful fruition. You will recall its terms of reference are “How best Freemasons can focus members, Lodges.

Provincial Rulers and Staff to work in a collaborative and focused manner to (a) stem the loss in membership and (b) meet the long terms needs of the Craft and the Royal Arch.

On the 4th November 2015 there was a meeting of the Provincial Grand Masters Forum in London which I felt was both informative and interesting.

Various papers were delivered, on governance by the Assistant Grand Master, updates on Adelphi 2, an update on the Membership Focus Group, a briefing on migration of membership and how to assist members who move to another Province to join a new Lodge.

As regards migration of members, I have appointed W Bro. Anthony Stockton as our Designated Provincial Officer, a DPO in short, to assist in the relocation of

members to join other Lodges elsewhere. Brother Tony also deals with enquiries on both the UGLE Website and our own Provincial Website. Of the 111 enquiries since June 2014, 23 have been initiated, 14 referred for interview, 10 transferred to other Provinces, 3 to the University Scheme and we are still in touch with 20 others. A great effort on his part. There was also a preliminary discussion on “The journey of a Freemason, an introduction to the members pathway” all very interesting. The scouting movement in this Country carried out their own review of the Scouting organisation 30 years ago! We have time to make up. However, I came away from that meeting reflecting on the fact that at long last measures were being taken for the benefit of all our members in particular but Freemasonry in general.

To this end Grand Lodge have produced a booklet entitled “The future of Freemasonry 2015 to 2020, our strategy at a glance”. Our vision, our values, our 2020 strategic objectives, the improved attraction and retention of members, how you can get involved individually by talking to your family, friends and acquaintances about Freemasonry, how Provincial Grand Officers should meet and talk to Initiates at every meeting. You will all receive a copy of this booklet. Now is the time to act.

I mentioned last year that one of the pleasures of Freemasonry is visiting other Lodges and Provinces. I spoke of enduring friendships with other Leaders and members of their Province. How these friendships augur well for the Brethren of our Province and our Order in general. Likewise I commend to all our Brethren the joy of visiting other centres, the warmth of the welcome that you receive, the experience of meeting new friends. I likewise take this opportunity to thank my predecessors in this office, the Heads of other Orders, the Grand Officers and particularly the Brethren of this wonderful Province for your support.

I am sure that with this support all our times ahead can be enjoyable and rewarding.

2022 Festival I mentioned exciting times ahead. Tonight I wish to particularly draw your attention to the 2022 Appeal in favour of the Masonic Charitable Foundation and of course the celebration of the Grand Lodge Tercentenary. Both important events in this Province.

As regards the Festival, it is no secret that we were a little slow off the mark in launching the Festival for the 2012 Appeal although the end result was very good. Therefore tonight, I wish to launch that Festival by bringing it to your attention personally and in our

Lodges. A year ahead, now is the time to plan. Already I have formed a committee to consider our plans as a Province, to consider who will run the Appeal, both as a Province and in your own Lodge. Our Province has a marvellous record of supporting these Festivals and long may it continue. I had a meeting last week with Laura Chapman and others from the Foundation and I will be writing to all Lodges in the New Year concerning the Festival and the Appointment of Festival Stewards.

LRMCA The Leicestershire and Rutland Masonic Charity Association has had a very good year under the Chairmanship of W Bro. John Peberdy and with the enthusiastic support of W Bro. Tony Sibson, the Provincial Grand Charity Steward. As you know, I have appointed 7 Assistant Charity Stewards to assist the Charity Stewards in each Lodge. I cannot stress enough the importance of the work of the Association. In the last year, we have donated on your behalf £122,730 to non-masonic charities from the large to the small, from £50,000 to the new Centre for Medicine forming part of the University of Leicester. Yesterday, several of us were invited to inspect the Centre for Medicine, which should be completed in the New Year. A truly magnificent building. The facilities are second to none. We will have a multi-purpose room named after us off the ground floor Reception area. In addition to the £15,000 given to Leicester Cathedral for the Richard III Re-internment Appeal, smaller amounts between £500 to £2000 have been given to much smaller Charities, whose dependence on us and other organisations is so great. I have stressed the importance of the Charity Presentation mornings held here at our Headquarters. More Lodges are attending and presenting their own cheques. Truly a memorable experience. Despite this, unfortunately, only 67% of the members of this Province contribute the £20 per annum minimum amount for membership of the Charity Association. Why should there be such disparity between the Lodges where everyone gives and others where it is less than 50%? I stress on my visits the importance of our charitable work. Please assist your Charity Steward to address this disparity where it applies.

I mentioned last year my scheme to appoint additional Assistant Almoners to work with the Provincial Grand Almoner W Bro. Anthony Molyneux and the Lodge Almoners. This scheme has now been adopted by the Central Charities. Eight Assistants have been

appointed and this Province has been selected to participate in a pilot scheme. A three day training course took place recently. These training skills will now be put into practice to benefit and help Lodge Almoners and also hopefully reduce the number of applications returned for lacking information.

Halls One of the items highlighted in the strategy I previously referred to is Masonic Hall Management.

The necessity to ensure our facilities and standards meet the needs of “Modern Man”. In this Province, we have a magnificent Headquarters and all our other centres have been maintained and improved to a very high standard. The latest is Lutterworth where over £300,000 is being spent under the guidance of W Bro. Clive Weston and his colleagues on substantial extensions by providing both a Community Room, new kitchens and toilets etc. At my invitation last Saturday, Lady Gretton, Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire carried out the official opening ceremony. We were all impressed by what has been achieved. Likewise you will have noticed the exterior of this building in Leicester has been extensively redecorated and the guttering has been replaced. As you will see from the front page of Leicester Square this work was carried out personally by our Provincial Grand Superintendent of Works, W Bro. Fred Harris and his son W Bro. Freddie. The total cost at £12,500 which included the cost of scaffolding, new guttering and all materials was absolutely marvellously low. To all these Brethren and to all other Brethren at our Masonic Centres who give their work voluntarily, I give my heartfelt thanks.

Tercentenary 2017 I mentioned the Tercentenary of Grand Lodge in 2017. Plans are now at an advanced stage for its celebration both in this Province and nationally. I am chairing a Committee to organise events and sub committees are being formed for each of our Centres.

The Tercentenary is a very important milestone in our History. To all our Brethren, I ask you to embrace this opportunity for not only us and our wives and families to celebrate but also to make the wider world aware of the benefits Freemasons and their families bring to their communities. Already we have planned Heritage Open Days, Commemorative Plaques, Sportsman’s Dinner “at the Tigers”, a summer ball at Athena, Cathedral Service, Lodge of Research Symposium, and Public Exhibition on Freemasonry.

The Light Blue Club have planned a 300 mile bike

ride. All of these I will be attending – but I can assure you I will not be participating in the bike ride! Hot off the Press! We are to host an afternoon in July 2017 at Billy Bates’s Funfair at Abbey Park in Leicester for under-privileged children.

Universities Scheme Conference On 7th November 2015, this Province was privileged to host the Biennial Conference of the Universities Scheme Lodges here at our Headquarters. The day was honoured by the presence of the Scheme President RW Bro. David Williamson, Past Assistant Grand Master and also by the presence of the incoming President RW Bro. Sir David Wootton, Assistant Grand Master. It was truly a wonderful day and made all of us so proud that here in Leicester we can successfully host such a prestigious event. My particular thanks go to my Assistant Provincial Grand Master VW Bro. Peter Kinder, the new Vice-Chairman W Bro. Andy Green, to W Bro. Daniel Hayward and so many more for their commitment. Our three Universities Scheme Lodges produce so many keen and enthusiastic members. Long may it continue.

Finally, may I give my thanks to the Charity Office, the Registrar and Year Book Office, the Hall Manager and staff, the members of the IT Committee, to my Finance Director W Bro. Brian Carruthers and to the dedicated staff of both Freemasons' Hall and Devonshire Place.

To the Provincial Grand Secretary, W Bro. Kelvin Johnson, and the Secretariat including our Girl Friday, Sandy Tanna. To the Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies, W Bro. Paul Roberts and his team ably supported by the members of the Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge. My sincere thanks for the arrangements today and throughout the year.

Finally my thanks go to all those unsung heroes throughout this Province at our other Masonic Centres, which we regularly visit. They do a tremendous amount of voluntary work for the benefit of others. Thank you for your dedication and the generosity of your time.

Story to tell

BROTHER OF THE KEYS This short article is about the noisy Brother who is often relegated to the corner of the temple and occasionally made to sit on his own at a festive board, the organist/pianist. He is often viewed in the same way as a well decorated room, not essential, but cheers up the place.

Since retiring young[ish] in 2004, I have been keen to improve my amateur musical abilities to raise me from ‘executioner of tunes’ to something more sociably agreeable. During the last 11 years I have achieved the Associated Board Royal School of Music [ABRSM] grade 8 theory and grade 6 practical on brass instruments, trumpet and cornet, which I played in various bands whilst amusing myself playing the piano at home.

It was several years ago I decided to assist the diminishing ranks of ‘lodge organist’ by concentrating my self-imposed music education on the piano. Many months of learning and improvement lay ahead.

There are many amateur musicians in society who have, or are, following the same musical journey as I. The most common keyboard used to practice on and take ABRSM piano exams is the straight 88 key strung piano or 88 key digital keyboard.

Most music retailers don’t stock anything else.

Having arrived at the point where the

audience actually recognised what I was playing on the piano, which often closely resembled the title of the sheet music I was following, I stepped forward and volunteered as organist. I started at De Verdun Preceptory of Knights Templars. The members quickly learnt to change their entrenched choir style of singing to a mysterious choral style yet to be recorded in the history books, but it suited my playing. One reason I was not as accomplished in the temple as I was at home, was the instrument. Most lodges do not have an 88 key straight keyboard organ, but double or treble manuals…with pedals…what on earth do I do with those?

Now, I like a bit of an adventure as much as the next brother, but I had never played a double manual, with or without pedals. I trained and practiced with the keys being on the same level, next to each other, in a long line…help! I turned off the power to the pedals and looked at the split keyboard which presented me with an acute learning curve of 90 degrees. I sat at the organ knowing in 10 minutes the Preceptory would expect a tune that at the least would resemble the usual opening hymn. I think it was then I suffered a phenomena called ‘brain finger dissociation’.

What I saw on the sheet music and heard in my mind was not what was coming out the organs speakers, so I did what all organists or pianists do at times of ‘you may think you know what I am playing, but I haven’t a clue’, reduce the volume so the singing was louder than the mish mash that was my playing. This was going to teach the brethren to appreciate their music CD collection!

So, why do masonic venues retain a style of organ now seldom found outside of churches and professional musical circles? That, I

believe, is a legacy of history.

Going backward from c1980, the presence of a competent lodge organist was a given. That organist would, most likely, have been a professional who played double manual organs in churches, clubs, dance halls, theatres and many other venues where music was required. In other words, they were adept on a double or treble manual organ and were good musicians.

The printed masonic sheet music they used was clearly produced for the accomplished 12 fingered, three legged organist. There are some ex-professional organists in our province today who can match those musical abilities of yesteryear, but they are becoming very difficult to replace. Live music is diminishing, mainly due to the rise of recorded music on vinyl, tape, CD and now the intangible download digital mp3 files. With the exception of church organists, any amateur keyboard player recruited into Freemasonry these days will most likely, like me, be used to the straight piano style keyboard, either strung or digital.

An example of what playing a double manual organ is like for someone who trained on a piano, is like sitting at your computer and having two keyboards, one for the left hand and one for the right hand, on different levels. Try it, it’s fun. Writing a short letter can take all week.

If we want to avoid using recorded music in ceremonies, maybe we should consider other forms of live music, flute, clarinet or oboe?

There are many more who play wind instruments than there are keyboard players.

Now, back to the organ. If the split keyboard on two levels and pedals trauma wasn’t enough, there was the other finger trap awaiting an unsuspecting victim. The lurking matter of ‘which tune do I play to this Lodges songs?’ Most lodge’s

members know well the melody of the tune they have sung for many years, but rarely do they know the name of the tune. The title of a hymn or song is not necessarily the title of the tune it is sung to, any hymn book will illustrate that fact. The Craft Opening Ode can have any of three tunes to the same lyrics. So when I ask the caller, “Which tunes do you want me to play?”, we enter into a protracted episode of smart phone, out of tune da da ti da da’s, or tum di dums. Well intended, but not very useful.

To assist all concerned, I developed the idea of the Provincial ‘Play List’ register. I created a table, or ‘Play List’ of tunes, that I am aware of, used in our Province [in PDF format]. When this ‘Play List’ is circulated throughout Craft Lodges, Royal Arch Chapters et al, added to and returned to me, I will collate the replies so a Provincial Register of ‘play lists’ will be created. Any guest organist would then be able to establish which tunes are required for any Lodge, Chapter etc. The days of down the line out of tune tum di dums are numbered.

Some experienced or professional organist will not need to use the register as they will be capable of playing whatever, whenever on request. For the rest of us keen amateurs, the register will be of great use, if only as an historical Provincial record. As for the double manual organs, I have got over the squints and shakes of PTSD now and can look like I know what I am doing.

I recall being complimented once by a Brother who said it took Les Dawson many years of practice to get to a standard where he could make a well-known tune sound awful. I achieved it in far less time.

Influential listing RW Bro. David Hagger, was recently included for the first time in the Leicester Mercury's list of the most influential people in Leicestershire. The annual list was published in September 2015 and contained key people in business, politics, public services, the charity sector and religion.

The entry for David Hagger included a summary of his public sector role and that he played an important role raising money for local charities including spearheading a £1 million appeal to help equip the new heart research centre for the Cardiovascular Research Centre built by the University of Leicester at Glenfield Hospital.

David Hagger said: "I'm completely surprised but honoured to find myself in this prestigious list of influential people. I am extremely proud that the Leicestershire and Rutland Freemasons continue to make a major contribution to local society through donations and with our members playing an active role in their communities."

Banners together W Bro. Mike Rawson, has spent the past few months photographing and making records of all the Lodge Banners within the Province of Leicestershire and Rutland.

Banners have long been used in Freemasonry and were traditionally carried by Lodges as they marched in procession. Whilst such processions are rare in current times, Lodges still display banners showing their own individual insignia during meetings. The design of all banners is approved by the United Grand Lodge of England and usually dedicated in a special ceremony.

As part of the refurbishment of the Masonic Hall at Melton Mowbray, Mike was inspired to record the amazing variety of banners throughout the Province. He said: ”I wanted to produce a reference to the fact that my Lodge is a small part of a much bigger organisation within Leicestershire and Rutland.“ Following on from taking the photos, Mike has produced a collage of the embroidered banners in use across the two counties showing the broad range of styles, colours and decoration for the very first time. He said: "The interesting thing about undertaking this project was that these banners are produced in many different ways and at quite a cost. Also it was interesting to note that three lodges in the Province do not have a banner at all.”

Masters & Wardens Evening A total of 98 Masters and Wardens, along with Lodge Liaison Officers, attended the annual Master and Wardens Evening at Freemasons' Hall, Leicester on Tuesday 22nd September 2015 hosted by the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. David Hagger.

The evening was a chance to update the attendees with various items of interest including the launch of the Lodge Register, which will enable Lodges to readily identify those Brethren who do not regularly attend Lodge meetings and that might have a potential problem or lack of interest.

The Provincial Grand Master spoke about the role of Lodge Liaison Officers and Lodge meeting times reinforcing the 3Rs recommendation that Lodges should not start their meetings earlier than 6pm.

Afterwards, everyone dined together for a wonderful supper in the Oliver Dining Room and enjoyed discussing the year ahead of them with their peers.

£50k towards

University Medical Room The Provincial Grand Master visited the new Centre for Medicine at the University of Leicester, Leicester on Thursday 26th November 2015.

The LRMCA has generously donated £50,000 towards the building which will provide a state of the art academic research and teaching environment for medical students.

A multifunctional room on the lower floor of the new Centre will be proudly named the ‘Leicestershire and Rutland Freemasons’ Room’. The Provincial Grand Master, along with the Chairman of the LRMCA, W.Bro. John Peberdy, the Provincial Grand Almoner, W.Bro. Anthony Molyneux, a Grand Charity Representative, W.Bro. Anthony Wood and their partners were given a guided tour of the Centre by Estates Project Manager, Dave Vernon.

The tour started at the room to be named after the local Freemasons which is located to the left of the main reception of the building. The Centre for Medicine has also recently had a green 'living' wall installed which is the largest green wall in the UK outside of London. This will provide year round colour from the flowering plants and a habitat for birds, bees and butterflies.

The Centre will be in full use by Easter 2016.

Quiz returns After a break for two years, the Provincial Fun Quiz made its return on Tuesday 24th November 2015 at Freemasons' Hall where 18 teams from Lodges across the Province battled to win the trophy, eventually leading to members of the Prince Rupert Lodge (7841) being crowned champions.

The quiz was organised by W Bro. Harry Crowfoot and Lady Joan. It was not only aimed to be a social function but also to raise funds for the LRMCA. The 18 teams were made up of six members, family and friends The Provincial Grand Master presented the winners with the Provincial Trophy and bottles of wine for each winning member. They were followed in second place by the Light Blue Club with third place being taken by the Edward Sherrier Lodge after a tie-break.

Despite the Quizmaster inadvertently giving one of the answers, the two Provincial Teams ended up again being the strongest, their mottos being …”It’s not the winning…it’s the taking part!!!” (Watch this space next time!!)

The Provincial Grand Master RW Bro. David Hagger said: "I'm always very keen to stress that any fundraising should be all about the first three letters of the word, FUN. Thank you to all the Brethren who supported the quiz and also to the organisers for a wonderful evening."

Earl Howe Restored Picture

The restored oil painting of the First Earl Howe has now been reframed and installed within the Hinckley Masonic Hall. This artwork, which has been under the care of the Freemasons of Hinckley since around 1985 dates back to around 1845 and had through the course of time suffered quite severe degradation and physical damage.

When the Hinckley Masonic Hall underwent major reconstruction during the summer of 2011, the painting was removed for safe storage and since this time has been restored to good condition .

Earl Howe (Richard William Penn) was the PGM (Warwickshire) 1843-1852, and then PGM of Leicestershire Province from 1856 and became the first PGM of the combined Province of Leicestershire and Rutland in 1869 until 1870. He also served as a Deputy Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England from 1844 to 1866.

In 1858 in order to help revive Freemasonry in Hinckley, he agreed to serve as Master of the Knights of Malta Lodge number 50 and upon his election he donated a Loving Cup to this Lodge. This Loving Cup is today displayed in the Provincial Museum on London Road in Leicester and once each year, at the Installation Meeting of the Lodge, it is used by the Lodge members, as originally intended to “promote the happiness of the Masonic body and to all mankind without distinction of Rank and Sect”.

Earl Howe was a much loved and distinguished Brother who practised the meaning and teaching of Freemasonry outside the Lodge as well as in it.

He was a great benefactor to the town of Hinckley and started many initiatives to help the residents when the “hungry 40’s” hit the town. (The great depression when the framework-knitters were short of work and many families were destitute) He also donated a great deal of money to repair, renovate and construct churches throughout the county.

In its new position in the refurbished building, this painting will be seen by every Freemason when negotiating the stairs from the Masonic Hall and will serve to remind them of the history and heritage associated with the Freemasons of Hinckley.

Wayfarer Double The meeting of the Wayfarer Lodge (8679) at the Masonic Hall in Coalville on Friday 18th December 2015 saw a double Initiation for the first time in their 30 year history.

Friends Ben and Tom had initially made enquiries about joining Freemasonry through the Leicestershire and Rutland Freemasons‘ website. Following discussions between the Provincial Membership Officer, W Bro. Tony Stockton, and W Bro. Barrie Taylor, Assistant Secretary of the Wayfarer Lodge, followed by meetings involving Ben, Tom and members of the Lodge, both candidates were proposed in November 2015. A successful ballot at the December meeting set the scene for the historic ceremony.

Bro. Ben, a Data Analyst with British Gas Business, and Bro. Tom, a Soldier in the British Army, were initiated into Freemasonry by the Master of the Lodge, W Bro. Chris Maybury. After the ceremony there was a convivial, lively and well attended Festive Board, including the singing of Christmas carols and the Entered Apprentice song, which rounded off a notable and very enjoyable evening.

Lodge video W Bro. Fred Hunter has produced a short video showing the Founding Members and Past Masters of the Newarke Lodge (6794).

The Lodge was Consecrated on 18th May 1949 and became the 35th Lodge within the Province of Leicestershire and Rutland.

Many of the founders had attended The Newarke School.

2 Hurdleys meet W Bro. Alan Hurdley of The Lodge of the Argonauts (8210) had a very unusual guest at their recent meeting on the 1st December 2015, one that has united the two Brethren from different Provinces. W Bro. Alan Hurdley of The Lodge of the Argonauts (8210) met with his namesake W Bro. Alan Hurdley from The Prince of Wales Lodge (2520) which meets in the Province of Yorkshire, West Riding.

The meeting came about when W Bro. Alan Hurdley from Yorkshire contacted W Bro. Alan Hurdley after noticing the similarity in their names whilst using Adelphi 2, the UGLE membership system. Whilst not directly related it seems that the two possibly share an ancestor originating from the village of Hurdley in Powys, Wales.

Both W Bro. Hurdleys enjoyed the evening in each other’s company and may well be the start of many visits between the two as members of the Craft.

Tools presented Mrs Janice Blair has presented a complete set of Masonic Working Tools to the Craft Lodges of Melton Mowbray in memory of W Bro. J Murray Blair who passed away in July 2013.

Murray was well known by the Brethren of Melton Mowbray’s Lodges as he was the Chairman of the Melton Mowbray Freemasons' Hall Committee for many years and was a joining member of the Rutland Lodge (1130) and became Master in 2007, prior to that he was Master of Lodge Polkemmet (927) under the Charter from the Grand Lodge of Scotland in 1968.

His wife Janice wanted to give Freemasons in Melton Mowbray something that could be used across the three Craft Lodges that Murray loved so much. All three lodges have been informed of this generosity and will be very proud to use these Working Tools in future ceremonies.

Father & Son join together Bro Matthew Taylor was initiated into Gabriel Newton Lodge (9071) on 4th February 2015, with his father presenting the NE Corner.

Bro Matthew was then subsequently ‘passed’ at his father’s Lodge, Sprig of Acacia Lodge in Valencia, Spain.

The event was included on the website of Provincial Grand Lodge of Valencia.

Beacon father and son Over 95 Brethren attended the Installation meeting of Beacon Lodge (5208) on Thursday 11th October 2015 at the Masonic Hall, Loughborough to support Bro. Freddie Harris being Installed into the Master’s Chair.

The night was made very special as whilst the outgoing Master, W Bro. Jon Hartley, worked the majority of the ceremony it was a lovely surprise to the Master Elect, that his father W Bro. Fred Harris, Provincial Grand Superintendent of Works, performed the Inner Workings.

W Bro. Freddie was Initiated into the Beacon Lodge in 2008 and was instrumental in launching the Leicestershire and Rutland Light Blue Club for junior Brethren.

The Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. David Hagger, delivered the Lodge Warrant into the safe keeping of the new Master and also the address to the Master in a very moving and emotional manner.

The new Master invested his Officers including a number of younger Brethren of the Lodge and they are all looking forward to a busy year ahead.

Scheme Conference

Freemasons’ Hall in Leicester was the venue for the bi-annual conference of the United Grand Lodge of England Universities Scheme on Saturday 7th November 2015 where over 170 delegates from the Scheme Lodges attended..

The Universities Scheme has now been operating successfully for 10 years and continues to pursue its objective of promoting Freemasonry within English, Welsh and Commonwealth Universities. The conference was hosted by the Founding President of the Scheme, RW Bro. David Williamson, Past Assistant Grand Master who retired from the role at the end of the conference and handed the Presidency over to RW Bro. Sir David Wootton, Assistant Grand Master.

The Provincial Grand Master of Leicestershire and Rutland, RW Bro. David Hagger warmly welcomed the delegates to Leicester and wished them a most enjoyable and constructive day. The Assistant Provincial Grand Master, VW Bro. Peter Kinder, then gave a brief overview of the success of the Scheme within the Province including the initiation of over 50 Scheme members since 2010. He then announced that the Granite Chapter (2028), which meets in Leicester, was set to become the third Scheme Chapter in the country thus providing a suitable home for those

Scheme Brethren from across the three Lodges who wished to complete their Pure Ancient Masonry.

This year’s conference addressed graduate retention and the make-up of the Scheme Lodge membership, following a recent Scheme Census showing that over 800 brethren had been initiated into Scheme Lodges during the past 10 years. The conference was the ideal opportunity for the delegates to exchange ideas on these and other, topics affecting university Freemasonry.

The conference was deemed a great success with RW Bro. David Williamson saying on Twitter “Best ever Scheme Conference in Leicester”. The Provincial Grand Master further concurred saying: “It was an excellent event and certainly the best Universities Scheme Conference I have ever attended. My congratulations to all who took part and helped with the smooth running of the day including in particular our Catering Staff.”

Cup

The DKW Cup, the United Grand Lodge of England Universities Scheme Travelling Loving Cup, was presented to the inaugural holders the Wyggeston Lodge (3448), which is the Scheme Lodge for the University of Leicester, at the Universities Scheme conference in November 2015.

The DKW Cup was presented to the Scheme by R.W.Bro. David Kenneth Williamson PAGM and Founder President of the Universities Scheme on his retirement as President of the Scheme. The aim of the DKW Cup is to encourage inter-visiting between Universities Scheme Lodges which also creates a sense of fraternity and togetherness. The Cup can be claimed by any visiting Scheme Lodge with four or more members present at a Lodge holding the Cup. In December 2015, the first claim of the DKW Cup was successfully mounted by members of the Castle

of Leicester Lodge (7767), the Scheme Lodge for De Montfort University, when nine Brethren attended the Wyggeston Lodge meeting.

The DKW Cup was subsequently claimed by five members of the Lodge of Science and Art (8429), which is the Scheme Lodge for Loughborough University, on the 9th February 2016. Their next meeting is on the 27th April 2016 when it is anticipated that the DKW Cup will be claimed by a Lodge outside of the Province of Leicestershire and Rutland and continue its journey around the country.

Granite visitor Granite Lodge (2028) welcomed W Bro. Darren Phipps from the Marengo Lodge (138) in Illinois, USA as a guest of the Junior Warden, Bro. Andrew Steele at their meeting on 1st February 2016.

within the English Constitution. Whilst he commented on notable differences within the Ceremony itself, the underlying concepts of Freemasonry remain the same. It was however the Festive Board, with the usual musical rendition that really left a lasting mark on his UK trip.

Under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Illinois, the Marengo Lodge will certainly be a destination for any members of the Granite Lodge should they happen to pass that way.

MASONIC CENTRES

Lutterworth major works The Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire Jennifer, Lady Gretton, JP officially opened the new Community Room at Lutterworth Freemasons’ Hall on Saturday 21st November 2015 alongside the Provincial Grand Master of Leicestershire and Rutland, RW Bro. David Hagger.

Over the past year the Freemasons’ Hall at Lutterworth, known as the Wycliffe Rooms, has undergone extensive development to include a new large multifunctional room, bar and kitchen which is available for hire by the local community.

The Chairman of the Lutterworth Masonic Association, W Bro. Malcolm Longley, said: “We offer our thanks to Lady Gretton for finding time in her busy schedule to perform the official Opening Ceremony. Similarly, our thanks must also go to RW Bro. David Hagger for also being with us on this special occasion. We are deeply indebted to many organisations and individuals who have contributed to the completion of this development with either financial or physical help, or both.”

Other parts of the former cinema have also been refurbished including the reception and toilet facilities and a lift installed to allow less able Brethren access to the Lodge Room without having to climb the stairs. The main kitchen has also been extended.

More than 70 people, including the Lutterworth Town Mayor, Tony Hirons, together with many local Freemasons and their partners, attended the opening after which a luncheon was served. The Provincial Grand Master gave an address congratulating all those involved in the project and concluded that he was proud that the Freemasons have provided wonderful facilities for the community of Lutterworth to use. Finally, W Bro. Clive Weston, Honorary Secretary of the Lutterworth Masonic Association, and Project Manager finished the event by presenting flowers to Lady Gretton and to the wives of members who had assisted in the development and refurbishment.

Melton Hall Refurbishment Over the past three years, the members of the Wicklow Lodge Hall Committee have sought to refurbish the Masonic Hall at Melton Mowbray including the recent installation of a lift.

During 2013, the main dining room and bar area were fully insulated and redecorated. During the work the fireplace, which was donated

by Bro. William Katz and came from Little Dalby Hall after it was demolished in 1945, was fully

cleaned and refurbished and now acts as a wonderful feature to the Dining room.

In the summer of 2014, there were extensive changes to the overall layout of the main rooms.

three toilets, including disabled facilities and also provides a large robing room together with a larger storage room upstairs.

This year saw the addition of a platform lift which greatly assists with accessibility to the Lodge Room upstairs having replaced a mechanical chair lift. This has ready provided the opportunity for those less mobile Brethren to attend Lodge meetings. The other main addition was to add an amplification system with discreet speakers into the ceiling of the Lodge Room. This offers the ability of playing music during ceremonies when the services of an organist are unavailable. Finally hearing loops have been added to the Lodge Room and the Dining Room as well as a dual boiler heating system been installed to allow the two large areas within the building to be independently heated.

All these improvements have been achieved through the efforts of the members of the three Lodges, that meet at the Masonic Hall by holding various events to raise funds together with a lot of hard work from a the Hall Steward W Bro. Mike Newham, and members W.Bro. Mike Rawson, W Bro. Vaughan Griffiths, W Bro. Keith Hallam and Bro. Paul Rees.

The refurbishments have been really well received by all the members and many visitors and will hopefully add to the overall ambience of an evening of Masonry at Melton Mowbray.

It is hoped that the kitchen facilities, which already offer a five star Local Authority rating, can be refurbished in the near future.

The Lewis Jewel?

It consists of two bars connected by chains, the upper bar contains the name of the father and the date of his initiation. The lower bar, the name of the son and the date of his initiation.

The Lewis Jewel may be worn by a Mason, if at the time of his initiation his father was a Mason in good standing. The initiate of a deceased father in good standing at the time of the fathers’ demise would also qualify.

A Lewis is a simple but ingenious device employed by operative Masons to raise heavy blocks of dressed stone into place. It consists of three metal parts: two wedge–shaped side pieces, and a straight centre piece, and fit together forming a Tenon shape. A dovetail recess is cut into the top of the stone to block the mortice. The two outer pieces are inserted first and then spread by the insertion of the centre piece. The three parts are then bolted together. A metal ring or shackle is then attached and the block is hoisted by a hook, attached to a block and pulley system. By this means, the block is gripped securely. Once set in place in the intended structure, the Lewis is removed leaving the upper surface smooth with no clamp or chains on the outside to interfere with the laying of the next course. Our ancient operative brethren used this tool as early as the Roman era. Stones were the mortised cavity for the insertion of a Lewis and have been found in Hadrian’s Wall built c.121-127 A.D.. The origin of the term Lewis for this device is uncertain.

Masonic historians concluded that the term came into use in the 18th century. The lecture in the Second Degree published by William Preston in the 1780s contains a lengthy discourse on the Lewis The word Lewis denotes strength. Lewis likewise denoted the son of a mason; his duty to his aged parent is to bear the heat and burden of the day, which they, by reason of their age ought to be exempt from: to assist them in times of need, and thereby make the close of their days happy and comfortable; his privilege for so doing is that of being made a Mason before any other person, however dignified.

Coffee Pots return to Holmes Holmes Lodge (4656) has acquired two beautiful silver coffee pots which form a lost part of the Lodge’s history which are now back in the hands of the Lodge.

In searching the Internet, W Bro. Andy Green spotted the coffee pots for sale and with the Lodge’s interest, an approach was made to the vendor (whose father was a Freemason) and made the generous offer of selling them to the Lodge for a much lesser price than her father had purchased them for in the 1980’s through the London Silver Vaults.

Granite Plate A commemorative plate made to mark the Centenary of Granite Lodge (2028), which meets at Freemasons' Hall Leicester, in 1984 has recently been kindly donated back to the Lodge.

Lesley Patterson, who had a relative in the Lodge at the time the plates were given out, the late Bro. Kenneth Greaves, offered to return it back to the Lodge for the enjoyment of today's members after contacting the Lodge via their website. Very little is known about the plate, however the printing on the reverse of the plate states: "A Limited Edition of 60 plates to commemorate the Centenary of The Granite Lodge No. 2028 Consecrated on the 14th February 1884 at Narborough, Leicestershire" Inside the original packaging is a certificate which states: "The Staffordshire Collection Ltd, Fine Bone China Plate. Commissioned to commemorate the Centenary of The Granite Lodge No. 2028 - 14th February 1984 - in a limited edition of 60 plates of which this is number 4" At the time of the Centenary, W.Bro John P. Phillis was Master of the Lodge, the task now begins to find out more about the plates and where the others may be residing.

The question then arose of how the silver had found its way from Leicester to London. The Hallmarks and Maker’s marks indicated that the silver had been made in 1924, and the original sellers were Pearces who had a very exclusive jewellery shop in Leicester, latterly in the Market Place, but before then in Gallowtree Gate. It was thus clear that the silver had a connection to the early years of the Lodge.

At this point W Bro. Don Peacock rode to the rescue once more by discovering in the Lodge archives a letter from RW Bro. Edward Holmes, the then Provincial Grand Master, to W Bro. G.W. Hunt, the founding Master of the Lodge. This letter congratulated W Bro. Hunt on his year as founding Master. There were further archive references to silver coffee pots and an inscribed salver being given to W Bro. Hunt from the Lodge to mark the appreciation felt for all he had done.

W Bro. Hunt went on to become Deputy Provincial Grand Master and Grand Superintendent in and over Leicestershire and Rutland for the Holy Royal Arch Degree, and it must have gratified him greatly when he was able to consecrate Holmes Chapter in 1945, the only Royal Arch Chapter to be consecrated in the Province during the Second World War. The silver would have formed part of his estate on his death in 1954, and it is now down to “Lodge Sleuth,” W Bro. David Hughes to obtain testamentary evidence to cast light on the fate of the coffee pots between the 1950s and the 1980’s.

The fate of the salver is unknown however, the silver pots are now safely back at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester where they will be displayed on Holmes Lodge nights at the Festive Board.

ARTEFACTS

Jewels After W Bro. James Noel Pitts, Howe and Charnwood Lodge (1007) and Lodge of Science and Art (8427), died in June 2013 his family asked for the disposal of his Masonic regalia and deal with some Masonic curios. The regalia was duly returned to the lodges of which W Bro. Jim had been a member, but there was an old toffee tin containing a number of Masonic jewels and other curios. David Sharpe was then asked to help identify them and to deal with them as he thought best.

Many of the jewels were duplicates of those held at the Masonic Hall at Loughborough, and so he took them to the Provincial Museum in Leicester to include in their collection. Four of these jewels are of special interest.

One is a Bi-centennial Jewel issued in 1917, issued during World War 1 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the formation of the Grand Lodge of England.

There are also two silver Masonic Million Memorial Fund Commemorative Jewels. These were in recognition of money donated to the Masonic Peace Memorial, later to become known as Freemasons’ Hall, in memory of the many brethren who had given their lives in the First World War. A slightly larger medal in gold on a light blue collarette to be worn by successive Masters of lodges was awarded to those lodges contributing an average of ten guineas per member, which were to be known as Hall Stone Lodges.

The final jewel in the tin was perhaps the most interesting. It was created to be awarded to those individual Masons, who had donated at least 240 guineas (£252). 956 of these Jewels were issued.

Whilst these Jewels are, of course, of considerable interest we must bear one thing in mind. They are in the museum in Leicester due to the thoughtfulness of W Bro. Jim’s family and will form part of a display of his curios and works donated to the museum. How easily they could be now in some ‘antique shop’ or a flea market. One must ask, will our families know what to do with our Masonic regalia, books and curios when we depart to that G. L. Above? This is the point made by W Bro. T. M. Ll. Walters in the conclusion of his Inaugural Address to the Lodge of Research in 1977 when he said, “Many Masons have interesting material. When they die their wives or executors may not appreciate it and it would be a service to posterity if arrangements could be made to deposit it either with their lodges, or an established library or archive before it gets into the hands of persons who may not appreciate its value.”

Alf Sharman

The Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. David V. Hagger, accompanied by his Provincial Officers, was on hand to present W Bro. Alf Sharman of the Lodge of Welcome (5664) with a certificate to commemorate his fifty years service to Freemasonry.

W Bro. Alf Sherman was initiated into the Lodge of Welcome, which meets at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester, on the 7th January 1966 and was its Master in 1979. He is a member of the Leicestershire and Rutland Lodge of Installed Masters (7896), being the Master in 1990, Lodge of Research (2429) and Ratae Meridian Lodge (9673).

The Lodge of Welcome meeting on Friday 8th January 2016 was attended by over eighty Brethren to celebrate the occasion and at the Festive Board, W Bro. Alf was presented with several gifts, including a silver salver by the Master, W Bro. Ian Beesley, and a commemorative cake by Alf's son, W Bro. Simon Sharman.

James Morgan At the Big Brass Band Concert promoted by the Humberstone Lodge, and the Fitzwilliam Lodge of Northamptonshire, VW Bro. Peter Kinder - Assistant Provincial Grand Master presented W Bro. James Morgan with a 50 Year Certificate for services to Freemasonry.

James was Initiated in December 1961 into the Wyggeston Lodge, and serviced as the Master of that Lodge in 1975. He Joined the Ratae Meridian Lodge, and is still a member of that Lodge.

James has been a resident of Devonshire Court for some four years, and enjoys his involvement in many of the activities that the Home provides with the help of the friends, and the many Lodges who support the Home.

Walter Instrall (60th)

The Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. David Hagger, attended Hasting Lodge (8695) in Ashby-de-la-Zouch on the 28th January 2016 to present a 60 year Service Certificate to 95 year old W Bro. Walter Instrall.

W.Bro. Walter was Initiated into the Tudor Lodge (7280) in the Province of Hertfordshire in 1955. In Leicestershire and Rutland he joined Hastings Lodge in 2002 and was promoted to Past Provincial Junior Grand Warden in 2011. In celebration of W Bro. Walter’s achievement of 60 years, the Provincial Grand Master was pleased to promote him to Past Provincial Senior Grand Warden after presenting him with his Certificate.

During the Festive Board, the Master of the Lodge generously presented the Provincial Grand Master with a cheque for £1,000 from the Lodge for the benefit of the Leicestershire and Rutland Masonic Charity Association.

David Parkes Bowen (60th) The Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. David Hagger, and the rest of his Provincial Officers, attended the meeting of Albert Edward Lodge (1560) at Freemasons‘ Hall, Leicester on 8th March 2016 to present W Bro. David Parkes Bowen with a Certificate of 60 years service to Freemasonry.

W.Bro. David is a member of most (if not all) Masonic Orders in the East Midlands and holds high rank in all of them Since 1985 David has been the Leicestershire and Rutland Inspector General for the Ancient and Accepted Rite.

During his 60 years W Bro. David has tirelessly played the organ for countless Lodges and Chapters. The Provincial Grand Master paid tribute to W Bro. David's glittering career in Masonry and congratulated him on attaining 60 years as a Freemason.

PGM STUCK IN SPAIN The PGM with his retinue was scheduled to attend the Lodge of the Golden Fleece (2081) to present W Bro. Jim Williamson with his 50 year Certificate on 21st March 2016, but the French air traffic controllers struck,with no planes out of Spain leaving our PGM left high and dry (and stranded). The rumour is that the French may have chucked their toys out of the pram after being stuffed by the English Rugby team on the Saturday night!

John Townsend (50th)

W Bro. John Townsend was presented with a certificate of 50 years of service to Freemasonry by the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. David Hagger, at the meeting of St. Wilfrid's Lodge (8350) on the 13th January 2016 in Market Harborough.

However the DPGM - VW Bro. Jim Buckle stood into the breach at the last hour and performed the presentation on behalf of the PGM (with his PGL team in attendance). Photos were taken (purposely !!) in front of the PGM's portrait in the Holmes anteroom, lest he should ever forget the occasion (of frustratingly being stuck in Spain).

Murray Sanders 50th Bro. Albert ‘Murray’ Sanders of Highcross Lodge (4835) was presented with his certificate for 50 years service to Freemasonry by the Deputy Provincial Grand Master VW Bro. James Buckle at a meeting of the Lodge at Freemasons' Hall, Leicester on the 4th February 2016 Bro. Murray was Initiated into the Highcross Lodge on the 3rd February 1966. Whilst he has never progressed to the Master of the Lodge, Bro. Murray continues to enjoy his Freemasonry at the age of 88 years.

W Bro. John was Initiated into Freemasonry in the Surbiton Lodge (2146). He joined St. Wilfrid's Lodge (8350) in 1979 and became its Master in 1999. W Bro. John has continued involvement in both Lodges and is currently Treasurer of Surbiton Lodge and Secretary/Mentor of St. Wilfrid's Lodge as well as a member of the Leicestershire and Rutland Lodge of Installed Masters No.7896 and the Lodge of Research (2429) He is also very active in the Royal Arch acting as Scribe E for three years before being promoted to Second Provincial Grand Principal of Leicestershire and Rutland in 2012.

The Provincial Grand Master warmly congratulated W Bro. John on reaching this milestone and serving Freemasonry and the local community extremely well. He finally wished him health and happiness to enjoy many more years as a member of the Craft.

Presentations Leicestershire and Rutland Freemasons held a donations ceremony at Freemasons' Hall, Leicester on Saturday 26th September 2015 where 24 local charities were gifted a total of

£92,845 Among the charities receiving awards was the University of Leicester. Dr Kevin Harris, Interim Dean of the Medical School, was pleased to receive an award for £50,000 towards the building of the new Centre for Medicine which will provide a state of the art academic research and teaching environment for medical students. Dr Harris said: “Thank you very much to the Freemasons of Leicestershire and Rutland for this generous gift. This will be the newest and most advanced medical school in the country and not only will it train the next generation of doctors and healthcare professionals it will also promote the health of the local population.”

LOROS Hospice, who care for over 2,500 people across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, were granted £8,363. John Knight, Chief Executive of LOROS, said: “Thank you to the Freemasons for this donation which will go straight to the work of the organisation for the whole of Leicestershire and Rutland.”

Ferrers’ books While researching the life of the 10th Earl Ferrers- PGM 1873-1912, W Bro David Hughes came across an internet advertisement for two volumes which had once belonged to Countess Ferrers and after her death had been part of the contents of the Earl`s home at Staunton Harold. The title of the work was “The Stuarts: being illustrations of the personal history of the family (especially Mary Queen of Scots) in the 16th-18th Centuries.”

The Bookseller`s description of the volumes stated that they were by JJ Foster and were from a limited edition of 550 copies, these being copy 34, and signed by the author on the limitation page. The books were said to be in good condition bound in full red buckram with gilt lettering and royal ciphers to front covers and spines. The only problem was that the books were in Vancouver, British Columbia. Nothing deterred W Bro Hughes, who contacted the vendor and arranged for the volumes to be sent by the cheapest means— surface mail. The volumes arrived in December 2015 and have now been placed in the Library and Museum at London Road.

But how did they come to be in Canada?The books had been purchased in 1967 by a Mr Pratt who was a wealthy Canadian book lover who lived in British Columbia. He appears to have purchased them from K Books in Yorkshire, and the surmise is that they acquired the books as a result of the sale of Staunton Harold Hall and its contents in 1954. Mr Pratt left his extensive private library and the rest of his estate to the University of British Columbia when he died in 2010. As the bequest duplicated some volumes the University already had they arranged for such books to be sold to book dealers, and that is how the volumes came up for sale.

So the books are now finally back in Leicestershire after being for 48 years half way round the world. Like King Charles II, one of the Stuarts depicted in the volumes, they do not wish to go on their travels again!

And we now have a further Royal connection as Her Majesty the Queen also has a set of these volumes in her collection.

Uppingham opens its doors The Uppingham in Rutland Lodge (9119) which meets at the Upper Cricket Pavilion, Uppingham, Rutland held a successful open evening on Thursday 29th October 2015.

Among the people who attended were those interested in finding out more about Freemasonry, the Uppingham in Rutland Lodge itself and the building where they meet. Several visitors were so taken with Freemasonry they expressed an interest in joining the Lodge which will be followed up by the Lodge members in due course.

In addition, a recently initiated member from Leicester, who lives in Uppingham, attended and expressed an interest in becoming a joining member so that he could meet more people in the town to which he and wife have recently moved.

The Secretary of the Lodge, W Bro. Brian Chambers, said: “I would like to give a very big thank you to those Brethren who brought prospective candidates as well as to those who helped with the arrangements for the evening and came along to answer questions raised."

Freemasonry Afloat On a recent cruise on the P & O ship Arcadia I saw in the ship’s newspaper one day an invitation for all Freemasons to meet in one of the bars on a sea day.

I went along, somewhat warily, because the last time I did so I was roped in to organising an event ! I need not have worried – the Brother who had organised this initial meeting was as keen as mustard and readily volunteered to act as Secretary to the group. A Treasurer and Director of Ceremonies were appointed and I was asked if I would act as President for any function we might organise.

After some discussion it was agreed that we should hold an informal coffee morning, charge £10 per head and see how much we could raise for charity.

We then went round the room and introduced ourselves. I was delighted when I found that a fellow Brother from Leicestershire & Rutland was present – Bro. Bob Packer, the current Senior Warden of Burbach Lodge (8699,) meeting in Hinckley (see photograph).

The coffee morning duly took place on a Saturday morning at sea and about 20 Brethren and their partners, plus one Masonic widow, attended. It was a great surprise when we found we were honoured by the presence of the Master of Arcadia, Captain Trevor Lane. He was kind enough to spend an hour of his valuable time with us, met all of us individually and was happy to have his photo taken with Bob and me.

With the fee of £10 per person and with some donations we managed to raise £400 for the charity of the Captain’s choice – the Mission to Seafarers.

This may be a story well known to many of our readers. I’m sure many other Brethren have been to similar functions on the high seas and will have their own personal recollections of these happy occasions.

ROYAL ARCH MATTERS

Master Masons’ & New Exaltees’ Evening On Monday 30th November 2015, Brethren and Companions gathered together for this annual event - with an enthusiastic attendance of some 26 Master Masons, 14 New Exaltees, 16 Royal Arch Reps and 30 supporters, including Officers of Supreme Grand Chapter and Provincial Grand Chapter. This year the Master Masons and New Exaltees again met in different rooms and received separate presentations tailored to their particular situations.

The Master Masons, meeting in the Oliver Lodge Room, received the three-part Royal Arch Lecture on the history, symbolism and format of the Royal Arch Order – the fourth and final step in a Freemason’s journey through ‘Pure Antient Masonry’ - from Initiation to Exaltation. The New Exaltees, meeting in the Morley Lodge Room, received a presentation intended to give them a better understanding of the form and content of the Exaltation Ceremony, using a question and answer format.

After these two separate presentations, the two groups came together in the Oliver Lodge Room, with the New Exaltees processing into the Oliver in full regalia – an impressive sight for the Master Masons. There were then some concluding remarks by the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. David Hagger and by the Grand Superintendent, E Comp. Peter Kinder, during which he announced the formal launch of the White Ribbon Club - a social forum for young Companions to meet together and share their experiences. The White Ribbon Club is based on the format of the Light Blue Club - and the two will work closely together.

At the end of proceedings, all were invited to partake of a complimentary buffet supper, when the Brethren and Companions were able to meet the rulers of the Craft and the Royal Arch and exchange experiences with their contemporaries.

Reynard Chapter celebrates 25 years On the 8th February 2016, the Reynard Chapter celebrated the silver jubilee of its consecration in 1990. This special occasion was honoured by the presence of the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, together with his team of Provincial Grand Officers and a number of other officers of Supreme Grand Chapter. Four of the original founders were present, E.Comps. Peter Kinder, Michael Langley, Alfred Sharman and Anthony Wood.

The Festive Board, which followed, was a very happy gathering. The Toast to the Grand Officers was given by Comp. Peter Davies, the Principal Sojourner, to which the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, a founder member and past First Principal of the Chapter, responded with fulsome praise for the progress the Chapter had made during its first 25 years.

The Toast to the Chapter was proposed by the Deputy Grand Superintendent, E Comp. Noel Manby.

He congratulated the Chapter on its achievements and recalled a number of other ‘momentous’ events that occurred in 1990, much to the amusement of those present.

A commemorative booklet, which is being prepared for the Chapter archive, which will be sent to all those attending the meeting.

RA White Ribbon Club With the success of the Craft Light Blue Club, The Royal Arch Provincial Executive has sanctioned the creation of a similar scheme for the Royal Arch, which has been called the White Ribbon Club due to the white ribbons newly Exalted companions wear on their regalia.

The White Ribbon Club was officially launched at the recent Master Masons and New Exaltees’ evening.

It has been formed for Royal Arch Masons within Leicestershire & Rutland and also working alongside the Light Blue Club for Master Masons who are interested in taking the next regular step and joining the Royal Arch.

The aim of the White Ribbon Club is to promote Royal Arch Freemasonry by raising awareness, encouraging recruitment, retention and the inspiration of members throughout the Province of Leicestershire & Rutland by organising Chapter visits and social events as well joining events of the Light Blue Club so that interested Master Masons have the opportunity to discuss Royal Arch Masonry and ask any questions.

2015 Annual Church Service

The annual Royal Arch Church Service, this year, was held on Sunday 18th October 2015 at its traditional venue, St Mary de Castro Leicester.

Those who know the Church well will immediately notice that there is no spire on top of the tower.

The spire was taken down, stone by stone, last year, because it was unsafe - but, unfortunately, not enough money has yet been raised to rebuild it The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, Peter Kinder, the Deputy Grand Superintendent, Noel Manby, and the Second Provincial Grand Principal, Richard Jelly, were all present with their wives, as was the Third Provincial Grand Principal, the Rev. Canon Michael Wilson, who took the service and preached the Sermon.

An appreciative congregation sang the familiar hymns with gusto, led by Philip and Judy Dodd’s Tudor Choir, which also provided an anthem.

The readings this year were given by E Comps. Stephen Randon (Granite Chapter - 2028), Andrew Rorison (East Goscote Chapter - 2865), David Highton (Beacon Chapter - 5208) and Simon Sharman (The Chapter of Welcome -5664).

After the Service, wine and soft drinks were provided by the Scribes’ Office, so that the Companions could mingle and socialise in the relaxed and very convivial atmosphere of St Mary de Castro.

VOLUNTEER DRIVERS NEEDED Devonshire Court our RMBI Care Home in Howden Road, Oadby, Leics LE2 5WQ is in need of Volunteer Drivers As with all aspects of working with young or elderly people it will be necessary to apply for a DBS Certificate (Disclosure check - formerly known as CRB check) which will be undertaken by the Home. For those over 70 years of age it will also be necessary to have a medical check as well.

This most rewarding work includes taking residents with a carer to medical appointments at local Medical Centres, Hospitals, Dentists etc. as well as Social Trips and Outings, being mostly within Leicestershire.

LANDMARK 30 years At the regular (but extremely busy) meeting of the Ascebi Rose Croix Chapter on 6th October 2015 meeting at Loughborough, V Ill Bro. David Parkes Bowen was re-presented with his Patent of Appointment as Inspector General of the District of Leicestershire & Rutland of the Ancient and Accepted Rite (Rose Croix).

The Ascebi Chapter’s Most Wise Sovereign had unfortunately just suffered the loss of his father a few days beforehand and the Immediate Past Sovereign (Ill Bro. Clive Thorpe) stood in at the last minute. Not only did he chair the meeting but also delivered the ceremony to Perfect a Candidate and took in his stride the presence of so many distinguished guests and visitors from neighbouring Districts, including 6 other Inspectors General.

The Grand Treasurer General from the Supreme Council based in Duke Street, London then re-presented the Patent, which had originally been presented to V Ill Bro. David over 30 years previously and during the period had it re-presented to him every 5 years. The dilemma was that, as at each re-presentation, the Patent had to be amended to record his further appointments …..there was now no room left to make this latest addition. A calligrapher was used to skilfully make the addition (albeit in a substantially smaller font size to the norm). It is safe to say that such numbers of re-presentations have not and will never be surpassed.

A short exaltation was given by the Grand Treasurer General to V Ill Bro. David on the long service he had given to the Order but more importantly his 30 years of service as Inspector General and the high esteem that he was held in by all those that he came into contact with. V Ill Bro. David humbly responded that he loved the Order and was very privileged to hold the Office of Inspector General and guessed that as there was no room left on the Patent, he would likely not be offered a further extension to his Patent in 5 years time. He thanked all those that had attended the meeting and had shared with him the pleasure of the evening.

V Ill Bro. David’s Patent of Appointment is hung in the Grand Lodge Officers’ Room at London Road.
