WELCOME MESSAGE Only 56 days after Bristol Bears lifted the European Rugby Challenge Cup trophy in Aix-en-Provence, the tournament kicks off again with a new, dynamic format to meet the challenges that club rugby has been presented by the containment of the Covid-19 pandemic. Wherever you are watching the action, the whole EPCR team joins me in hoping that you enjoy it. When the global health crisis struck, we were well on course to have the final of this tournament in 2019-20 watched by a record attendance, with more than 50,000 expected for a showpiece in Marseille. As we set out on the pathway to the Stade Vélodrome again this term, we will not be swayed from our purpose of lobbying for fans to return to stadiums across Europe. We believe it is essential for the sport and for the mental health of a public and of clubs who have suffered enough in recent months. Of course, we say that believing this can be achieved safely and consistently with guidelines of various governments across other industries. European club rugby tournaments will be played across eight weekends on an exceptional basis this season and that means 14 runners and riders in this Preliminary Stage of the Challenge Cup. The top eight will progress to an exciting and expanded knockout round, where they will be joined by the clubs classified between fifth and eighth place in each pool of the Heineken Champions Cup. They will form a Round of 16, who will battle it out from the start of April in a series of straight shootouts ahead of the final on Friday, May 21 in the south of France.
This tournament features three previous winners (Pau, Cardiff Blues, Stade Français Paris) and the pedigree of the participants is highlighted by a repeat of the 1997 Heineken Cup Final, with twiceEuropean champions Leicester Tigers coming up against the winners that day, Brive. There is no doubting in the quality of the matches as this tournament goes from strength-to-strength. We thank our broadcast partners - BT Sport, beIN SPORTS and France Télévisions domestically - for their dedication to taking the action to homes across the world, which has been appreciated even more during the pandemic. CHAIRMAN Welcome to matchday - our second home game in succession at Mattioli Woods Welford Road and our first in this season’s European Challenge Cup. Today we welcome the officials and players of our visitors from Brive to Leicester. This is the first time the two teams have met since the European Cup Final back in 1997, when Brive lifted the trophy in only the second year of the tournament’s history. It was also the first year that English clubs had taken part and it was an exciting journey into the unknown for the players and the staff in those early days of the professional game. Although on that occasion we were unable to take the last step to win the cup that season, the players involved often point to it as an essential part of the experience which eventually led to Tigers becoming back-toback European champions just a few years later. Next week we face more French opposition as the team travel to Bayonne for the first-ever meeting of the clubs in a competitive fixture, before returning to Gallagher Premiership duties during the Christmas and New Year period. On behalf of everyone at the club, I pass on congratulations to our England players Ellis, George and Ben on their unbeaten run in the Autumn Nations Cup and the final victory after extra-time last Sunday.
We welcomed them back to Oval Park this week, together with Nemani, Kini and Shalva who also played in the tournament, and look forward to seeing them all back in Tigers colours.

The team showed great determination in the game against Exeter Chiefs last week but, as Steve said immediately afterwards, they kept us under pressure for long spells and in the end they managed to pull away by making the most of their opportunities. As this is our last home game until January, I would like to wish
Leicester and Leicestershire currently in Tier 3 and supporters unable to join us on matchday. We hope to see some light at the end of the tunnel shortly and bring as many of you as possible back to the stadium to get behind Steve and the players on their journey back to where we want to be. Four weeks into the new season and we face a fresh challenge with the switch to European rugby for the next two weekends. There is an obvious difference in terms of familiarity with the opposition, though we know that Brive have a good squad, a big forward pack and carry threats in several areas. The focus for us is preparing thoroughly so we are able to perform at our best because we are going to need it.

Matias Moroni and Luan de Bruin have also joined the squad and, after seeing four players make their debuts in the opening rounds of the league season, it is good to see the squad continue to grow and develop, and for us to have the opportunity to give those players their chance in a Leicester Tigers shirt. HOW IT WORKS
The European Challenge Cup has a new format for this season. THE NEW LOOK This season’s European Challenge Cup begins with 14 clubs in a single pool - six from the TOP 14, four from the Gallagher Premiership and four from the PRO14. The revised programme for both the European Champions Cup and Challenge Cup has been agreed on an exceptional basis against the backdrop of Covid-19 and its ongoing impact on the professional club game. The Heineken Champions Cup is contested by 24 clubs, drawn into two pools of 12 and playing four matches in the qualifying stages. The top four in each pool will progress to home-and-away quarter-finals, followed by the semi-finals and final in Marseille on May 22. The clubs ranked fifth to eighth in each pool of the Champions Cup will enter the knockout stages of the Challenge Cup. CHALLENGE CUP Leicester Tigers and Brive are the only two previous European Cup winners in this season’s Challenge Cup, where Worcester Warriors, London Irish and Newcastle Falcons complete the English entry for the preliminary stage this year. The Challenge Cup features two head coaches Yannick Bru of Agen and Steve Borthwick - who won the trophy as a player. Borthwick was captain of Bath when they lifted the trophy in 2008, with Bru playing for the victorious Colomiers team a decade earlier. PRELIMINARY STAGE Clubs from the same nation are kept apart in the preliminary stages of the Challenge Cup and play twice at home and twice away in the pool stage, with Tigers drawn against French duo Brive and Bayonne.
Placings in the pool are determined by match points gained. In the event of teams sitting level on match points at any stage, ranking will be decided as follows: (i) (ii) (iii) (iv)
points difference, then if equal, tries scored, then if equal, fewest number of players suspended for disciplinary incidents, then if equal, by drawing lots.
ROUND OF 16 The leading eight clubs after the preliminary stage progress to the new Round of 16 where they will be joined by eight representatives from the Heineken Champions Cup pool stages. These games will be played on the opening weekend in April 2021. The top four Challenge Cup clubs will be ranked 1-4, with the Heineken Champions Cup clubs ranked 5-12 based on the usual criteria of match points, aggregate points difference, tries scored etc. The four remaining Challenge Cup clubs will be ranked 13-16. TIGERS RIVALS Spotlight on the two teams providing opposition in the preliminary round.
The new format for the European Challenge Cup this season pits all teams into one pool in the preliminary stage, with Tigers facing the unusual challenge of back-toback games against French opposition in the shape of Brive and Bayonne. Both teams returned to the Top14 with promotion in 2018-19 and have been rare opponents for the Tigers - with just one competitive fixture against Brive and none against their French colleagues.
Brive The new TOP14 season began back at the start of September after the suspension of the 2019-20 campaign after just 17 rounds, and Brive opened with a three-tries-to-one victory against Bayonne. Scores were shared by Enzo Herve, Setareki Bituniyata and former Exeter Chiefs forward Mitch Lees which, combined with seven kicked penalties, pushed them to a 42-23 winning start and the highest score in the opening weekend. A narrow defeat at Bordeaux-Begles followed, but Brive bounced back on home turf at the Stade Amédée-Domeneche to beat Pau, who were among Tigers’ pool rivals in Europe last season. That gave them a steady two-from-three start with a squad including summer signings Valentin Tirefort, Florian Dufour and Fijian full-back Setariki Tuicuvu from elsewhere in French rugby. Samoan back row Brandon Nansen was signed from the Dragons and prop Pietro Ceccarelli arrived from Edinburgh in the other squad changes. There is a Leicester Tigers link too with Wesley Douglas, a graduate of the Tigers academy, moving from Beziers, while Stan South was part of the Exeter Chiefs squad last season when they won the Heineken Champions Cup. Departures ahead of the new season included veteran Samoan prop James Johnston, who had experience with four Premiership clubs, and the Scotland international Alex Dunbar. Following that bright start, points have proved harder to find for a team noted for its big forward pack and quick backline. Left without a fixture in Round 4, the winning run at home was ended by a Toulouse side who racked up a 36-16 victory, and then lost at Montpellier before a second home defeat against Clermont Auvergne. Brive also lost at Toulon and La Rochelle either side of a narrow loss against Racing 92, but then landed a first away win of the campaign, beating bottom-of-the-table Agen 15-6 last weekend. Fly-half Thomas Laranjeira kicked all of the points with a dropgoal and four penalties as they enter the Challenge Cup period with 14 points from their 10 games played. The former European champions scored a home-and-away double over Stade Francais in the pool stages of the Challenge Cup last season, but did not progress to the knockout stage after two defeats to Bristol Bears and a narrow loss to Zebre in Italy. They have played more games in the Challenge Cup than any of this season’s other entrants and have made 13 appearances in the last eight.

Bayonne Rugby arrived in the Basque country in the late 19th Century and the Bayonne club, located in the south-west corner of France, enjoyed early success with a first league title win in 1913. This season, Aviron Bayonnais had an even won five, lost five record in the opening 10 rounds before a 20-24 defeat at home to high-flying Toulouse last weekend. After an opening-day loss at Brive back in October, they recorded a 21-19 win over Clermont Auvergne back at the Stade Jean Dauger and then beat Stade Francais in Paris before a loss at home to La Rochelle in Round 4. Lyon inflicted a heavy defeat a week later, but Bayonne bounced back with a 26-15 win over Agen for their second away win in three trips at the start of the season. Impressive wins over Montpellier and Toulon, and defeats to Bordeaux-Begles and Racing 92 followed before the contest with Toulouse last week as Bayonne reach this break in the league action sitting in ninth place with 21 points. New arrivals in the squad this season include a trio of Australians - John Ulugia from Clermont, Hugh Pyle from Stade Francais and Izaia Perese who arrived after a stint with Brisbane Broncos - plus New Zealand Sevens representative Joe Ravouvou. Georgian lock Konstantin Mikautadze was in Montpellier’s Heineken Cup squad with Leicester’s Nemani Nadolo last season. They failed to progress from a pool including eventual finalists Toulon, Lyon and London Irish in last season’s Challenge Cup, their 13th campaign in the tournament.
Teams are drawn in one pool but do not face opposition from their own country in the preliminary stages, which is why Brive and Bayonne will play against Tigers and Zebre rather than against each other. Tigers welcome Brive in the opening game of European competition
FROM BOTH SIDES This is the first meeting of Leicester Tigers and Brive since the 1997 European Cup Final when the French PREVIOUS side made a mark in history as the only MEETING winners who have never clinched their 1996-97 own domestic league title. HEINEKEN CUP FINAL That 1997 team was hailed far and wide as rugby’s great entertainers and ended Tigers’ dreams of lifting European silverware at the first time of asking, winning 28-9 in the final at Cardiff Arms Park in front of a 41,000-strong crowd. Tigers had to wait four more years to be crowned kings of Europe, beating Stade Francais in a famous final in Paris before retaining the trophy with victory over Munster a year later. Brive were in 11th place in the Top14 when the 2019-20 season was suspended after just 17 rounds and had an even record - won 3, lost 3 - in the Challenge Cup, finishing second in their pool behind eventual trophy winners Bristol Bears. Tigers reached the semi-finals in the club’s first-ever Challenge Cup season in 2019-20, losing just once in the pool stages and moving through to the last four when the quarter-final against Castres Olympique was cancelled following a Covid outbreak in the French camp. It was Toulon who ended the run, winning 34-19 in the re-arranged fixture in September.
In a muchtravelled career which started as a teenager at Welford Road and featured two spells with Tigers, fly-half Andy Goode also spent a couple of seasons with Brive from 2008. Goode joined Tigers from Coventry and went on to accumulate 1,799 points in 200 appearances, starting the Heineken Cup Final triumph in Paris as a 21-year-old in 2001 and also the 2007 final against Wasps. At the end of his second spell in 2008, he moved to Brive and had spells with the Sharks in South Africa, Worcester, Wasps and Newcastle Falcons before finally retiring after 18 seasons in the professional game.

The new season in the Challenge Cup gets under way in Paris as Stade Francais look to banish memories of the 2019-20 campaign when they won only once in a pool containing Bristol Bears, Brive and Zebre. They are the highest-ranked French team in the tournament, sitting fourth in the Top14 with six wins from their 10 games. Benetton were beaten 31-14 at Connacht a week ago and have now lost all seven games in the PRO14. They return to the Challenge Cup after playing in the Champions Cup last season, where they beat Lyon 25-22 in the pool stages.
Bottom of the Top14, Agen were beaten by Tigers' rivals Brive at home last Saturday to make it 11 defeats in succession in the league. London Irish were beaten at home by Sale Sharks on Sunday at their new home in Brentford and have one win from the first three rounds in the Gallagher Premiership.
Newcastle Falcons v Cardiff Blues In this evening’s other fixture, Tigers’ next league opponents Newcastle Falcons carry their unbeaten record from domestic rugby into European competition. Bath, Sale and Wasps have all fallen to Falcons already this season. European Cup finalists in the tournament’s first year back in 1996, Cardiff Blues were beaten home and away in the Challenge Cup by Tigers last season and have won three of their opening eight games in the PRO14.
Zebre Rugby Club v Bayonne Tigers’ next opponents Bayonne travel to Italy on Saturday to face a Zebre side who have won just once in the opening eight games in their PRO14 campaign. Bayonne were beaten 22-24 by second-in-the-table Toulouse in the Top14 last Saturday, but have made a steady start with five wins in their opening 11 games in the league.
Pau v Worcester Warriors Pau were among Tigers’ pool rivals last season - when each side won its home game but Tigers picked up a precious point in the away defeat to seal top spot - and have won just three times in 11 rounds in the Top14 season so far. Worcester Warriors were also on the losing end of domestic action going into Europe, beaten 33-17 at Sixways last weekend by a Bath team without a win in the opening two rounds of the domestic season.
Ospreys v Castres Olympique The Saturday evening fixture features a Castres side denied a chance to play in a quarter-final last season due to a Covid outbreak in their squad. They travel to the Ospreys who have won three from seven in the PRO14 but were without a game last weekend. Castres recorded a third win in nine games from the start of the season with a 10-3 triumph away to Pau last week.

TICKET BALLOT UPDATE Tigers have now produced an update on what would happen if the city moved out of Tier 3 and supporters were able to return to Mattioli Woods Welford Road. With a maximum of 4,000 spaces in Tier 1 or 2,000 in Tier 2, the club will offer season ticket holders and seasonal hospitality members absolute priority on available seats. Who would be able to attend in these circumstances will be determined by ballot. Season ticket holders will be asked to apply for each match and can apply with other season ticket holders in their ‘bubble’ on a one-per-seasonticket-holder basis. You will be able to sit with them if you are successful in the ballot. Due to restrictions on stadium usage and social distancing, your seat may not be in your usual place, so we will ask season ticket holders not to join the ballot if this is an issue. Supporters who require Accessible Seating will be able to ask for this in the ballot, but we will have very restricted numbers available. Season ticket holders who choose not to enter the ballot or who are unsuccessful in it, will at this stage still be eligible for a rebate on that fixture. If there are any seats remaining, additional tickets will be made available to Club Membership holders on a one-per-membership basis. Seasonal hospitality members in the 1880 Club, 502 Lounge, Executive Boxes, ClubHouse and Try Line Club will be contacted by the sales team to detail their opportunities.

20 YEARS ON This season marks a very special anniversary in club history.
It is widely acknowledged as the greatest day in the club’s history, and now 20 years on, there are plans to celebrate in the company of the men who made it happen. Back in May 2001, Leicester Tigers went to Paris and beat Stade Français in their own city to win the Heineken European Cup for the first time.
It is an odyssey which began with a run all the way to the final at the first attempt in 1997 before defeat by Brive and which featured its ups and downs before the amazing scenes in the French capital and, of course, the retention of the title of European champions with victory over Munster in Cardiff a year later.

T IGE R S TA L K Now, as the 2020-21 season marks its 20th anniversary, Tigers past and present are coming together to mark the occasion and re-live the memories of that 34-30 victory over Stade Français at the Parc des Princes. Following in the footsteps of recent landmarks including 125 years at Welford Road in 2017 and the 2,500th first-team fixture at the stadium in November 2020, Tigers are hosting a special evening in the company of some European rugby legends. This exclusive event is being held in the Premiership Suite at Mattioli Woods Welford Road on Wednesday, May 19 and tickets are available now. Back in 2000-01, the route to the final featured pool-stage games against Pau, Glasgow Calendonians and Pontypridd before a convincing 41-10 home win over Swansea - before the days of Welsh regional rugby - in the quarter-final and then victory over Gloucester in an allEnglish semi-final. The trip to Paris is memorable for many reasons - the huge travelling support visible throughout the city, the heat and the noise of the stadium, the tension of a nip-and-tuck game between two top-quality teams, the late break from Austin Healey, the finish from Leon Lloyd and the touchline conversion from a nerveless Tim Stimpson which prompted the celebrations. As well as celebrating again on the anniversary in May, the club will be collecting fans’ memories from wherever they followed
the action - in Paris, back in Leicester or from anywhere else in the world - to share on this special occasion. The 2021 celebration event is hosted in partnership with Switch the Play Foundation, a charity co-founded by tryscoring hero Lloyd and the UK’s only charity dedicated to supporting sportspeople to successfully transition into life outside of sport. The event includes a threecourse meal and refreshments, with tables of up to 10 available. Players from the 2000-01 squad and current Tigers will take part in Q&A sessions on stage and look back at footage from the successful European campaign. Tigers chief executive officer Andrea Pinchen provides a club update. I don’t know about you but, after last weekend’s Round 3 Gallagher Premiership game against Exeter, you couldn’t help but feel the excitement starting to build after an immense firsthalf effort from the squad. We are disappointed with the result, of course, and have work to do, but the commitment of the players was clear for all to see. Now we welcome back our international players - many congratulations to Ben Youngs, George Ford and Ellis Genge for a successful campaign with England - as our attention turns to two games in Europe, kicking off this Friday evening before a trip to France to face Bayonne next Saturday. Tigers will always be synonymous with Europe. In a season that marks 20 years since we won our firstever European title at the Parc des Princes in Paris,
we want to be challenging against Europe’s elite once again and we are building towards our goals. Friday evening games are always a spectacle but unfortunately, once again, fans will not be able to share the atmosphere under the lights with the team. I know you’ll be shouting at the TV, or laptop, cheering the boys on and we’ll be closely monitoring the news due on December 16 and 30 to see if we’re lucky enough to move into Tier 2 and be able to welcome 2,000 of you back in to start the new year with a bang at our game against Bath in the Gallagher Premiership at the start of 2021. Exeter Chiefs produced a second-half fightback to maintain their 100-per-cent record from the start of the league season. A penalty awarded in the opening 90 seconds allowed Zack Henry to put Tigers ahead and, despite conceding a try from captain Jack Yeandle from a close-range penalty, they played their way back into the lead before half-time, adding a clinical finish from a set-piece to go with determined work in defence. After Henry had added another penalty, Tigers capitalised on a crisp lineout play to score through Calum Green and the conversion made it 13-7 at the break. But two tries in quick succession, from Jannes Kirsten and Ian Whitten, in the third quarter gave Chiefs a platform to chase a third bonus-point win in a row in defence of their league title. Tigers did create pressure of their own but without converting chances into points on the scoreboard before Sam Simmonds - with his sixth in three games - and Ollie Devoto added further scores for the visitors in the closing stages.

COMMUNITY TEAM NBS TAG RUGBY
MULTI-SPORT
Even with the challenges presented by the national lockdown, the Tigers Community team has continued to work with our local schools, delivering our NBS Tag Rugby programme. Now in its sixth year and supported by club partner Nottingham Building Society, the programme provides schools with five weeks of fun rugby sessions for pupils in Years 3 and 4.
Tiger Sports, the club’s multi-sport initiative, is back up and running at schools in the city and county, and looking forward to welcoming new groups. It is open to all age groups from Reception/Key Stage One through to college years and aims to engage through practical PE sessions, educational workshops and some classroom-based learning. The project even gives schools and groups the opportunity to see behind the scenes at Mattioli Woods Welford Road as part of bespoke Inside Sport days. Charlie Hurley heads up the Tigers programme and said: “Tiger Sports gives schools access to our experience, facilities and equipment, as well as the opportunity for youngsters to try a variety of sports and activities. “With lockdown measures and parents working from home, some children haven’t had access to the same opportunities for getting out and being active, so it is exciting to be able to offer our services to enable them to do just that.”
Two schools have already completed their five weeks of sessions this term, with the programme being well received by pupils and teachers. Headteacher Diane Parry from Stanton under Bardon Primary School, who were involved last year, said: “The children really enjoyed the sessions in school and the festival. There was excellent progression in skills and confidence. There was a fantastic festival, which was very well organised, and the children loved seeing Welford and getting their NBS t-shirts.” The club’s education and engagement manager, David McDonald, said: “The NBS Tag Rugby programme is a fantastic way to introduce pupils to the game of rugby and develop key skills such as passing, catching and evasion through fun, energetic sessions. “Our coaches are taking extra safety measures and adjusting how their sessions are delivered to reduce the Covid risk and make sure our activities are as safe for pupils as possible.” Any school interested in taking part in the New Year can find out more by emailing david. mcdonald@tigers.co.uk or phone 0797 213 0106.

THE TEAM IS PRESSING AHEAD WITH ITS PLANS FOR ANOTHER BIG YEAR
With a new year approaching, the Leicester Tigers Foundation is looking to grow and develop in order to offer much-needed support to the most disadvantaged people within Leicestershire and beyond. This has been a tough year for everyone, and the Foundation has had to cope without many of its main fund-raising events and seeing its delivery affected, while also still trying to make a difference. The Foundation is proud that it has been able to maintain its educational provisions in both the pre16 Dynamite project and post-16 HITZ programme. A committed effort from the whole team ensured that all of our students achieved the support required to succeed in qualifications in English and Maths, alongside sports and employability skills. The Foundation’s educational programmes will continue to reach out and support groups of young people, both at the stadium at Mattioli Woods Welford Road and in schools across our county.
Now, with the announced changes to Covid restrictions and the start of changes in response to the pandemic, the Foundation is using its time to plan a route back to providing inspirational activities and events during the next 12 months, and we hope to start making announcements of what is in store very soon. One of our first projects is the launch of an exciting new ebay page which will feature some great memorabilia for enthusiasts, so keep an eye out for details of an opening auction launch featuring numerous unique and collectable items. The Foundation’s heritage monument outside the main reception at the stadium is another ongoing project and will provide a fantastic tribute to the fallen. ON THIS DAY 1890: In the eighth game of
the club’s debut season, they beat Moseley by the score of 1 try and 1 goal to nil. All other details of the match, almost uniquely in the club’s archives, have disappeared.
1886: Rushden were beaten
2-1 at Leicester’s Victoria Park home with scores from Sherrard Coleman and William Sheffield. The opportunity for a repeat at Christmas was postponed due to frost. 1897: Frank Jones supplied the only score in a 3-0 win away to Manchester. 1909: A crowd of 7,000
witnessed an 8-3 win at Northampton with Kenneth Wood - who would gain selection for the British Isles tour to South Africa in 1910 claiming a try and Harry Lawrie adding a conversion and a goal from the mark, a scoring option which would survive into the 1970s. 1920: Norman Coates, a
centre who would play in 38 of the 41 games in the season, was the tryscorer in a 6-5 win over Blackheath.
1926: Tigers lost 18-6 away
to Blackheath. 1937: Eric Bevins, Raymond
Clark and Frank Herbert - who would end the season as top try and points scorer - were on the scoresheet in an 11-9 win at Blackheath.
1948: Tigers enjoyed another successful trip to Blackheath, winning 10-3 in London. 1954: Second-row Jim Ford
made his debut in a 9-11 defeat at Blackheath.
1965: Mike Harrison grabbed
the only try in a 6-3 win over Blackheath, with Graham Pulfrey adding a penalty. 1971: Bob Barker and Robin
Money were among the tryscorers in a close game against Blackheath. The other scorer in a 15-13 victory was back-row Chris Baynes, one of the 37 he scored in 116 appearances, and who sadly passed away recently at the age of 73.
11 2005: A full-house crowd
of 16,815 cheered a 30-12 victory over Ospreys in the Heineken Cup, with Austin Healey providing the bonus-point score in the last minute after earlier tries from Brett Deacon, Harry Ellis and George Chuter. Tigers completed a home-andaway double a week later but eventually lost to Bath in the quarter-final at the home of neighbours Leicester City.
2010: A losing bonus point from a 19-24 defeat away to Perpignan - who had future Leicester player and coach David Mélé at scrum-half - kept Tigers top of their pool in the Heineken Cup.
1976: The John Player
Cup trip to Wakefield was postponed for a second time due to frost. At the third time of asking, six weeks later, Tigers would record a 17-6 victory but exited in the next round at Moseley. 1982: Forwards trio Dean
Richards, Rob Tebbutt and Martin Whitcombe scored tries in a 28-21 triumph at Blackheath.
1993: Tigers stayed in second place in the Courage League table with a 21-9 win over Bristol at Welford Road, with fly-half Jez Harris kicking all of the points.
2011: Ben Youngs claimed a
try in a 12-30 defeat away to Clermont Auvergne in the Heineken Cup, in a game which included simultaneous yellow cards for George Chuter and Manu Tuilagi.

Rugby’s family values have never been more literally emphasised than at Bristol’s Ashton Gate Stadium back in October. Joe Simmonds was already the Heineken Star of the Match before the penalty that took Exeter Chiefs to their first European crown against Racing 92 in the final and, soon after, brother Sam was presented with the Anthony Foley Memorial Trophy as EPCR European Player of the Year. The number eight was the tournament’s top try scorer during the season, crossing eight times to become the fourth Englishman in five seasons to win the prestigious accolade. Simmonds was selected by a combination of an expert panel deliberating right until the end of the Heineken Champions Cup final and more than 20,000 votes cast through HeinekenChampionsCup.com. This season, stars of the global game will have more intense periods to prove they are Europe’s standout player with the pool stage of the Heineken Champions Cup played over four rounds in December and January on an exceptional basis, with an expanded knockout stage leading a path to Marseille for Finals Weekend on 21-22 May 2021, before which a list of nominees will have been streamlined to five candidates. By taking part in the public vote through official channels of the tournaments, fans can be in with a chance of winning outstanding rugby prizes.
