Those were the words I scribbled into a notebook on March 23, 2004 as I began contemplating the launch of a new publication meant to share the best locally owned businesses with our community. Fifteen years, and now one-hundred and sixteen editions later, our philosophy remains the same. Ten times a year, we bring you the very best Lehigh Valley products and services and foster a sense of culture, community spirit, and giving. Our interest in supporting the artistic value our communities deliver began by featuring local folk artist Peg McCormack in our first issue. Today, Peg continues to provide inspiration as we share the area’s cultural pursuits in the department Local Color. In this issue, we share Zeke Zelker’s national film release inspired by a radio contest that occurred in the early 1980s where three men camped on a Whitehall Township billboard.

No matter where you live locally, our staff works diligently to make you feel closer to your neighbors and more at home socially. To accomplish this, we created the department Because You Live Here to share the history, charm, and hidden jewels of a different Lehigh Valley neighborhood. This month, we take you to Cetronia where Greg Ebert, John Trapani, and Frank Knauss all agree that there’s a strong bond among those who live here and those who have moved away. Fostering the exchange of goods and services has always been the underlying foundation of Marketplace. Through both our editorial content and our advertisers, we uncover and promote the best locally owned businesses in every issue. In Pride of Place we highlight the rich history and legacy of businesses that have been around for decades. In Good Taste we provide a glimpse of the culinary delights of our ever-growing restaurant scene. In this issue, we introduce you to Hager Furniture in Palmerton and The Beam Yard in Hellertown. As much as we love talking about and promoting our area's businesses, some of our proudest moments have come from writing about non-profits. Through your generosity, these organizations have received thousands of phone calls from folks interested in volunteering and donating. For your unwavering support over all these years, we’re both humbled and grateful. Please join us in celebrating our fifteenth anniversary by finding your own meaningful reason to support the Lehigh Valley—because you live here.

Warmest Regards,

Matthew J. McLaughlin

Cetronia 16

APR I L 2 01 9

BY BRYAN HAY

ehigh Valley residents of a certain age may remember entering Dorney Park on Haines Mill Road via Cetronia, a village on the southern tip of South Whitehall Township bordering Allentown’s West End. Like most places in the area, the village of 2,115 people has experienced change since it was settled centuries ago. But Cetronia still reflects a rugged, agrarian Pennsylvania German past with vintage homes and buildings still used for their original purposes and others renovated for new ventures with utmost respect for their historic charm and significance. Descendants of founding families—Haines, Knauss, Mertz, Lichtenwalner, Litzenberger, Weaver, Helfrich, Dorney—still remain in the 485-acre village. “It was always a close-knit community, and people are still proud to call Cetronia home,” says Cetronia native Frank Knauss, a 40-year member of the Cetronia Fire Department, now serving as its deputy chief of fire prevention. Knauss, a member of the Lehigh County Historical Society, has gathered information about Cetronia over the years, much of it contained in the three-volume “History of Lehigh County Pennsylvania,” published in 1914. Prior to 1800, the land around what is now Cetronia belonged to the Knauss family; Haines Mill, one of the most iconic structures in Cetronia, was built in the mid-1700s to grind wheat, oats, and corn. By 1852, most of the area was owned by Charles Mertz, who eventually sold off the land in lots, slowly giving the village an identity. By the middle of the 19th century, the area had two churches, Cedar Union Church, founded and shared by Lutheran and German Reformed (now UCC) congregations to share expenses, and Grace Evangelical Congregational Church. In 1855, James Yeager erected a brick hotel near Haines Mill, and three years later the area took on its first name, Cedarville, named after Cedar Creek.

In 1872, a store owned by Solomon Dorney, a Pennsylvania German farmer who founded Dorney Park, had a post office. Residents asked to maintain Cedarville as the village’s name, but because of U.S. Postal Service requirements, the village was renamed Cetronia, possibly because too many places had already claimed the name Cedarville. By 1884, Cetronia had about 20 dwellings, including a hotel. “A trolley used to run by Haines Mill, bringing people from center city Allentown to Dorney Park and Kutztown,” Knauss says. “Cetronia was also home to a dumbwaiter manufacturer, which operated in the early 20th century. It was where the Montessori School on Cedar Crest Boulevard is today.”

John Trapani opened Grille 3501 in 2001, purchasing the landmark Trinkle’s Cetronia Hotel and transforming it into a restaurant specializing in new but unpretentious American cuisine. “Trinkle’s was an institution in Cetronia for more than 50 years, and before that, it was a stagecoach stop when Broadway was the main drag through here,” says Trapani, who bought the hotel from Charlie Trinkle, whose grandfather started the business. “There’s a lot of history here, and some say

COUNTERTOPS THAT POP! HAINES MILL One of the most familiar landmarks in Cetronia, Haines Mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. On the west end of Cedar Creek Parkway East, the four-story grist mill on Cedar Creek serves as a living example of a small-scale rural flour mill. First erected in 1760, the mill was reconstructed in 1909 after a fire gutted the interior of the building. It was operated by the Haines family into the third quarter of the 20th century. Haines Mill used a stock water turbine to power a set of milling equipment to grind grains into flour and meal. Designed to be operated by a single person, the mill during its heyday was a commercially profitable enterprise, serving markets in South Whitehall Township and Allentown. Lehigh County purchased the mill in 1972 for preservation and operates the site with the Lehigh County Historical Society. Haines Mill is open for free public tours from 1-4 pm on Saturdays and Sundays from May to September. Other hours are by appointment with a guide. Call the Lehigh County Historical Society at 610-435-4664 for tour information and scheduling. Cedar Creek Parkway East - Haines Mill 3600 Haines Mill Road | Allentown

the building is haunted, but I’ve never seen any ghosts.”

“IF YOU WENT TO THE LOCAL CHURCHES, YOU’D ALMOST ALWAYS HEAR

‘watch what you say, you might be related.’ The timing for a Cetronia restaurant was right for Trapani, who had sold his former Trapper’s Pub on the south side of Allentown and wanted to establish new American dining in or near Allentown’s West End. “We renovated the hotel to what it is today,” he says. “We just love the area, and it’s about as close to the West End of Allentown as you can get.” Further up on Broadway is a renovated brick Pennsylvania German bank barn, which for decades was home to Joseph I. Haines Appliance Store. It was renovated by Gregory Ebert, who opened Ebert Furniture Gallery there in 2004. “We’re in one of the most historic areas of Cetronia,” says Ebert, noting that Haines Mill is in his backyard. “Joseph Haines was part of the Haines family who settled in Cetronia and farmed the whole area.” Born and raised in Allentown, Ebert chose quiet Cetronia for his furniture store to give

himself some unique identity among the chain stores that tend to be clustered together in high-density retail corridors. “We operate in the same manner as Joseph I. Haines. We’re a full-service store, which is rare today,” Ebert says. “We do our own deliveries and don’t contract out. We’re not like a MacArthur Road store. When you come in, it’s a homier feel than a big box store, in keeping with the products we offer and the legacy of the Haines family. Ninety-five percent of our furnishings are American made, with some products even coming from Pennsylvania.” Ebert, Trapani, and Knauss all agree that there’s a strong bond to Cetronia among those who live there and those who have moved away. “People still identify with Cetronia. It’s an area unto itself,” Ebert says. “In this tiny little area, you’ve got history, fine and casual dining, a full-service furniture store, Cetronia Elementary School, dentists, physicians, and two hair stylists.” Trapani says the explosion of newcomers to the Lehigh Valley has also affected Cetronia; however, “there are reminders everywhere of the Cetronia heritage, like the Cetronia Fire Department, Cetronia Ambulance Corps, the mill, and preserved historical properties like Grille 3501 and Ebert Furniture.” Call it family, says Knauss with a chuckle. “If you went to the local churches, you’d almost always hear ‘watch what you say, you might be related.’”

Hager FURNITURE 22

APR I L 2 01 9

BY BRYAN HAY

eff Hager often hears from first-time customers that his family-operated furniture store in Palmerton is a lot bigger than it looks from the street level. But once you’re inside, every inch of the 12,000-square-foot building is loaded with living room, family room and bedroom furniture, mattresses, floor coverings, and window treatments. Everything but curtains and a high-pressure staff itching to make a sale. “When they come in the store, they’re going to be greeted typically by a family member, or an employee who’s been here a long time,” says Hager, president of Hager Furniture Co. at 24248 Delaware Ave. in the heart of Palmerton’s business district. “We just try and make them feel comfortable. You’re not going to be in an atmosphere where you’re going to feel pressured,” he says. “I hear it all the time from customers just how refreshing it is when they come in.”

From the design, to the construction, to the routine maintenance, the entire crew was friendly, accommodating and professional. Thanks Creative, for a first rate experience! Gary M. from Bethlehem

It’s been that way for more than 60 years across four generations of the Hager family, a legacy started by Hager’s grandfather, Frank V. Hager Sr. When he got out of the Navy in 1945, the patriarch went to work at Silver Furniture in Lansford. When the business’s owner decided to open a store in Palmerton, he asked Frank V. Hager Sr., who spoke Slovak, to manage it because of the borough’s large Slovakian population. “Customers were really comfortable around him,” says Jeff Hager. When the elder Hager decided to leave Silver Furniture around 1954 to become a welder for Air Products and Chemicals, Silver customers called him to express how much they enjoyed interacting with him, to the point of not wanting to deal with anyone else. It inspired him to get back into the furniture business. “My grandfather had enough contacts with manufacturers that he was able to start a business out of his house for a short time,” Hager says. “Then he decided to make a go of it for himself and opened Hager furniture on Oct. 15, 1957.”

“When you walk in, it’s this one smaller building, but it actually encompasses three buildings, one of which used to be a movie theater 80 years ago before it was converted into a factory. Now it’s part of our showroom,” Hager says. “At times, it seems like a step back in time, there’s no doubt about it. But people tend to like that and the fact that we’re friendly and knowledgeable and no high pressure. We’re here to answer questions.” When Hager Furniture Co. first opened, it was strictly furniture. When Hager’s dad, Frank Jr., came into the business, there was a market for floor coverings, which have since become a staple of the business. But the biggest change over the past six decades has been the expansion of the company’s service area.

The original store was at 202 Delaware Ave., just up the street and four buildings away from the present store, which opened in 1960.

“Years ago, it was mainly Carbon County and maybe the northern tips of Northampton and Lehigh counties,” he says. “Now we stretch out to the entire Northampton and Lehigh counties and get into Schuylkill, Carbon, Berks, and Monroe counties.” To accommodate that growth, the store is open seven days a week from Labor Day through Memorial Day, a change made by the Hagers eight years ago. They like to have some time off during the summer, so the store is closed on Sundays in June, July, and August. Hager finds that more people crave doing business with establishments that are family operated and offer quality and impeccable service. Ninety percent of what Hager offers is American made, “which is the opposite of what you’ll find at big box stores,” he notes, and the business offers free delivery in five counties. “It’s not just us—the trend in many sectors is small businesses,” Hager says. “They are incredibly important to our economy, and people like to support them.”

THE HAGER FAMILY The Hager family has seen customer tastes and preferences evolve over the years. But there are still some basics to adhere to when setting out to purchase furniture and mattresses. Jeff Hager offers the following advice: WHEN CHOOSING FURNITURE, TAKE YOUR TIME. If you’re buying better quality furniture, it’s going to be long lasting, so take time in choosing colors, finishes, and styles. You’re going to be using it and looking at it for many years, so make sure you really like what you are choosing. WHEN CHOOSING UPHOLSTERY, CARPET, OR OTHER FLOORING, make sure to take fabric or flooring samples home with you so you can see the colors in the lighting in your home. Lighting makes a really big difference. MAKE SURE THE SALESPERSON YOU ARE WORKING WITH CAN EXPLAIN TO YOU THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE FURNITURE YOU ARE LOOKING AT. A $399 and $999 sofa may look alike on the outside, but there is a huge difference on the inside. Your salesperson should be knowledgeable enough to be able to explain the difference to you. Hager has seen a change in the kinds of products people buy. Furniture purchases for the home no longer include buffets, china cupboards, and ornate dining room tables.

TODAY, EVERYTHING IS GEARED TOWARD functionality and comfort. “When I started 25 years ago, we sold a lot of formal dining rooms that got used twice a year. Those are not sold any longer,” Hager says. “It’s for function now—people want something they can use every single day. A little bit more relaxed, a place where kids can sit and do their homework, a place for family dinners. It all gets used for some purpose.”

“Rarely do we get someone who wants a set of furniture for a room that never gets used,” he adds. “Years ago, people would buy a big dining room table with a hutch. Now they might put in a home office in that space with bookcases. The function of the home has changed, and buying patterns have changed with it.” Hager’s demographic is individuals and couples between 40 and 80. “Our typical customer is not looking for disposable furniture like the kind sold at some big box stores,” Hager says. Not only has Hager Furniture stayed true to its business philosophy, it also has maintained a strong presence in its hometown. “It’s what a family business is all about,” says Peter Kern, president of the Palmerton Chamber of Commerce. “The Hager name is synonymous with community involvement, and that comes from a civic pride that emanates from a privately-owned family business.”

WHEN IT COMES TO BEDROOM AND DINING ROOM FURNITURE, make sure to find out if what you are looking at is made of solid wood or veneers. There are easy ways to know the difference. Also, if buying American-made furniture is important to you, make sure to tell your salesperson that is what you want and make sure that is what they show you. WHEN SHOPPING FOR MATTRESSES, if you are looking for comfort and durability, make sure to ask about two-sided mattresses that you can flip. Many stores do not carry them and may even tell you they are no longer made. They certainly are made, you just have to look at the right stores, and Hager Furniture has a huge selection of two-sided mattresses. They are no more expensive than a singlesided mattress and they last longer, which makes them a better value.

pride of place Kern says Hager Furniture is active in the chamber and supports the annual Palmerton Community Festival and a range of nonprofit organizations in town. Jeff Hager counts himself lucky to have worked with and learned from his grandfather, his father, who started working at the store at 19 and is semi-retired after 60 years, his mom, and his older brother Frank, who set out on his own in 1997 but remains a big influence. His oldest son, Bobby, a digital studies major at East Stroudsburg University, handles the store’s marketing, and his oldest daughter Bailey started in February, becoming the fourth generation Hager in the business. The store’s 10 employees, some of them on staff for decades, are considered part of the family, too. Sandy Benson, the office manager, is retiring this year after more than 30 years. “I must say it will seem strange not heading to work in the mornings,” she says. “Working at the store was a huge part of my life. We are not just employer and employees—we are family. “We have been through many changes and life experiences together,” she adds. “Truth be told, I started as one of their babysitters many years ago, and I have been fortunate enough to work with all four generations of Hagers, each bringing their own touch to the business.”

The Key to Your

Home Awaits

“We’ve been blessed to have the same employees for so long,” Hager says. “You get so comfortable with the people you work with every day, always working toward the same goal, the customer. And to be able to say that I worked with my grandfather through high school and college for 10 years, you can’t put a price on that.”

hen Lana Engler, 40, went through a series of blood and imaging tests, she was optimistic that whatever was causing her symptoms could be easily remedied. But on November 6, 2018, Lana, a single mother of a 10-year-old boy, heard one of the most dreaded words in the English language: cancer. “It literally rocked my world,” she says. “The diagnosis was completely unexpected.” For several months last year, her obstetrician-gynecologist monitored Lana’s health. She’d been experiencing abnormal vaginal bleeding and cramping. “I turned 40 and it all went downhill,” she laughs. “I felt something was wrong. And as a working mother, you don’t always follow your instincts. But I didn’t push it aside. I knew it wasn’t normal.” A practice supervisor at The Vascular Center, Lana was diagnosed with endometrial cancer, a type of cancer that starts in the uterus. This was on a Tuesday. She says she didn’t plan on addressing the life-altering diagnosis until the following week so she could get over a busy hump at work and process the news.

happy healthy local “When [my doctor] said the word, I don’t remember the rest of the conversation,” she says. “I was completely overwhelmed. I had no idea what I was going to do.” But because of the team at St. Luke’s, Lana didn’t have a chance to be overwhelmed or at a loss for words very long. “My doctor called me at 4 p.m. At 4:45 I received a call from the surgeon’s office,” she says. “I was going to go home and sulk. I wasn’t planning on diving into this at all that week.” LARA ENGLER

On Monday, November 19th, just 13 days and one snowstorm-delayed surgery later, she was cancer-free. Ten days after that she was back at work. Lana and her healthcare team chose treatment via robotic surgery (see Man O/R Machine on the adjacent page) to remove her uterus, cervix, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. Although she wasn’t sold on robotic surgery right away, the gynecologic oncologists she worked with, Scott Purinton, MD, with whom she consulted, and Rick Boulay, MD, who performed the surgery, were confident in their abilities and the effectiveness of the technique.

“AFTER TALKING TO THE SURGEONS, I FELT THE

weight of the world ON MY SHOULDERS LIFTED,” LANA SAYS.

Lana, says Dr. Purinton, was an ideal candidate for this type of surgery. KAELA KANE AND SALVATORE PAGANO

It’s made up of three components: a surgeon console where the surgeon controls the robot; a patient-side console, which has arms to hold the surgical instruments; and the monitor console, which shows the surgeon everything going on inside the patient via high-definition, 3D imaging.

Robotic surgery has been around for several decades, but the technology has gotten much better, says Rick Boulay, MD, the gynecologic surgeon who operated on Lana Engler. The components that make robotic surgery less painful and reduce recovery time are the machine’s calibration—the instruments don’t pull on the incision spots—maneuverability— surgeons can work these instruments into tiny nooks and crannies—and the high-definition, 3D imaging, which gives surgeons better visibility inside their patients. “We want to get our patients back to living more quickly,” says Dr. Boulay.

“She had a diagnosis of grade 1 endometrial cancer, which is the most common diagnosis we treat,” he continues. “Most, if not all, patients can be treated in a minimally invasive fashion.”

“Patients will tell us, ‘You did such a good job!’ and I say, ‘I didn’t do it, the robot did,’” Dr. Boulay laughs. “The technological advances are really palpable.” The week following Lana’s successful surgery she reported discomfort on her right side to Dr. Boulay. That spot was the “human port,” he explained. In other words, out of her five small incisions, the one where she felt more pain was created for human hands, which normally causes more pulling. “If I had felt this discomfort in the other four incisions, I would have had a totally different recovery. I would have had a lot more pain and not been back at work so quickly,” she says. “I can’t speak more highly of robotic surgery.”

Lana, like many women, she suspects, are not aware of this type of surgery, and she’s trying to change that. “Other women [in similar situations] would benefit from robotic surgery,” she says. “I’ve had seven or eight major surgeries since I was 16 and this was the best experience I’ve ever had.”

Lana also wants women, especially mothers, to advocate for themselves when it comes to their health. “I knew something was wrong, but I didn’t know what. If I had let it go, I would have been in a different scenario. The cancer could have spread outside of the muscle and maybe I would have needed radiation. If something isn’t right, see your doctor. Make time for yourself.”

n 2013, Caleb Oliver weighed 370 pounds. But when his wife Jana announced her pregnancy, he knew it was time to do something. “It was getting harder for me to accomplish physical tasks, and I wanted to provide a life for my daughter.” He tried numerous diets, but experienced the common “yo-yo” syndrome: his weight went down...then up...then down... After researching bariatric surgery, he approached St. Luke’s Weight Management Center “We see patients like Caleb all the time,” said bariatric surgeon Maher El Chaar, MD. “He was morbidly obese—more than 100 pounds overweight—had high blood pressure and sleep apnea as well. Type 2 diabetes runs in his family, and he was exhibiting symptoms of pre-diabetes himself.”

WEIGHT LOSS success

In 2016, Dr. El Chaar performed a gastric bypass procedure—which involves drastically dividing the stomach’s size and then connecting the small intestine to the smaller portion.

Caleb’s weight now stays in the neighborhood of 238 pounds, and he’s experienced other health improvements as well: his sleep apnea disappeared and his blood pressure and blood BY FRED JERANT sugar readings improved.

“That’s a common effect,” Dr. El Chaar said. “Excess weight aggravates other medical problems; losing it helps the other conditions improve.” “I couldn’t be happier with the team at the St. Luke’s Weight Management Center,” Caleb said. “That was my first major surgery, and everyone was very supportive of me.” After his procedure, Caleb began distancerunning and won a slot in the 2018 Boston Marathon (sponsored in part by his employer, Boston Beer Company). “My goal was to finish the race,” Caleb said, “and I did it in 5:59.”

the Chicago Marathon in October. He hopes to eventually complete all six races (Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York City) in the World Marathon Majors. He found an additional benefit as well. “One of my happiest childhood memories is going to amusement parks. Before my surgery, I had to avoid roller coasters because the safety bar couldn’t be lowered. Last summer, I took my daughter Zavaya on her first roller coaster ride at Dorney Park, and the bar came down with no trouble!”

And his family-friendly “Cub Club” recently got an exciting new member—St. Luke's Pediatri cs. “Although St. Luke’s had been an active part of PBS39 for years, the new partnership is exciting,” says Robin Kulesa, membership director at the station. “We thought the pediatric division would be a perfect fit to sponsor the Cub Club. PROTECT KIDS from sun BY FRED JERANT

ong sunny days can present a conundrum for parents—and Andrew Krakowski, MD, one of the region’s only board-certified pediatric dermatologists, understands. “We want kids to enjoy being outside. But the skin is the body’s largest organ, and it’s our primary shield against the environment. That means it takes the brunt of sun damage.” With a bit of forethought and some simple actions, parents can help keep kids safe from sun damage. “Be aware that certain medications can increase your sensitivity to the sun,” Dr. Krakowski explains. “For example, doxycycline is an oral antibiotic for acne that can make a sunburn more severe. Some supplements, naturopathic remedies, even common backyard plants can cause reactions.” Basal cell carcinomas can result from chronic exposure to ultraviolet rays. “I’ve seen kids under 18 with basal cell skin cancers,” he

Luke’s, has been providing quick and easy health and wellness tips for some time and both organizations focus on families and children,” she continues. “As part of our community outreach efforts, we wanted to provide opportunities for families to do educational and fun things with their kids,” she said, “maybe activities they hadn’t considered before.” The idea evolved into the Cub Club for children under 10 and their parents. For

says. “It’s rare, but it happens.” He adds that immunosuppressant drugs can also make it easier for cancerous cells to grow. Cut back on sun exposure by encouraging outdoor playtime in the early morning or late afternoon hours, when the sun’s rays are less intense. Wear UV-protective clothing; a higher UPF number is better. “The styles of these garments have changed,” Dr. Krakowski adds, “making it less obvious that you’re wearing something special.” “Swim shirts,” a variation on surfers’ rash guards, are becoming popular, too. They’re lightweight, waterproof, and offer good protection. If you’re not covered by clothing, use a good sunscreen. “A good choice is a broad-spectrum screen against both UVA and UVB rays, that has an SPF rating of 50 or higher. But don’t presume that a higher rating means you can skimp on the application. “As a rule, we don’t use enough sunscreen,” he continues. “For the best effect, you

should use from 1 to 1-1/2 ounces to cover your whole body.” Dr. Krakowski offers some final advice: “Any time there’s sun-related pain, that’s a cause for alarm. And if a sunburn develops blisters, that’s a second-degree burn and needs professional evaluation.”

NEW PRACTICE Dr. Krakowski recently opened his new practice, St. Luke's Dermatology. Although he specializes in pediatric dermatology, he sees patients of all ages for conditions ranging from acne and eczema to carcinoma and melanoma. He also collaborates with other specialists to achieve the best possible outcomes. MILK? BY SARAH FULTON

arents struggling with a fussy baby or a young child with seemingly random bouts of tummy trouble can seek specialized care that just might make sleepless nights and changing bedsheets a thing of the past. Increasingly, nowadays, pediatricians are seeing young patients with milk intolerance, meaning the youngsters suffer digestive upset after consuming milk, cheese, and other dairy products. In infants, the intolerance can occur from milk proteins in formula or proteins that pass from the mother’s diet through breastmilk. In toddlers and kids, the intolerance may appear as soft stool, diarrhea, gut pain, or gas. If a child is experiencing these symptoms, it’s time to call the pediatrician for an appointment. Eva Mayer, MD at St. Luke’s Coopersburg Pediatrics says she is seeing more and more milk intolerance these days.

happy healthy local “What we see in the office is a lot of infants do just fine initially and then present with gastro symptoms, such as fussiness, gassiness, and spitting up,” Dr. Mayer says. Young children—ages 2 to 4—are old enough to tell parents their bellies hurt, and Dr. Mayer says parents may notice their child experiencing soft stool or diarrhea, stomach pain, or gas. Both babies and kids may lose their appetite as part of their discomfort. Dr. Mayer says she often asks parents to observe their child’s dairy consumption and see if any irritability occurs afterward. However, if a baby or child is losing weight, she will refer them immediately to a specialist. “There’s always been fussy babies and they can’t tell us if it’s their bellies,” Dr. Mayer says.

Fortunately, St. Luke’s University Health Network has pediatric gastroenterologists on staff who are specialized in diagnosing and treating digestive problems in children. Pediatric gastroenterologist Kathy Chen, MD joined St. Luke’s in September.

“I see a ton of milkintolerant patients; IT’S ONE OF MY MOST COMMON DIAGNOSES,” DR. CHEN SAYS. When babies show post-meal fussiness, have diarrhea, or are losing weight, there’s a good chance they are sensitive to the formula they’ve been fed. Dr. Chen says if your child has vomited, had diarrhea, or developed a body rash after consuming dairy more than once, then it’s time to see the pediatrician for advice. Children who have trouble breathing should be taken to emergency care right away to ensure a dangerous allergic reaction, anaphylaxis, is not occurring. Once a child is referred to Dr. Chen by a pediatrician, family doctor, emergency room, or urgent care, she may enact a 30-day elimination

diet, making dairy off-limits to confirm the intolerance. After that, there are many nutritional options a family may pursue. Because infants rely on bottle-feedings for their primary nutrition and caloric consumption, they are prescribed hypoallergenic milk alternatives by the physician. “With an infant, under the age of 1, losing weight, I want them monitored closely. I would use a prescription-based formula with specific fat, calories, and protein,” she says. However, since milk and dairy is only a portion of a toddler’s balanced diet, families with a milk intolerance diagnosis can take to the supermarket and begin sampling whatever plant-based milk they desire, Dr. Chen says. There are many tasty milk alternatives on the market, such as the plant-based varieties lining the coolers of the supermarket in the form of soy, almond, cashew, and coconut-based beverages. “At the store the other day I saw hemp milk and there are pea products,” Dr. Chen says. “Pea is a hot new milk protein now.” Parents are given the freedom to choose the milk alternative that works and tastes best for their child. Dr. Chen does not recommend one brand or variety over another. Chen says St. Luke’s University Health Network tripled its numbers of pediatric specialists in the last year. Her office is located at the St. Luke’s Quakertown Campus and she has colleagues at both the Bethlehem and Anderson Campuses. “Our kids don’t have to go all the way to Philadelphia to see a specialist anymore,” Dr. Chen says. “It’s super-convenient for families.” To find a pediatrician or for more information on pediatric gastroenterology and other children’s health services, call St. Luke's University Health Network at 1.866.STLUKES (785.8537) or visit sluhn. org/pediatrics.

to BY KATE VAN DRUFF t’s said that necessity is the mother of invention, and that statement couldn’t be truer for Nikki Brezack. Brezack opened Hello Baby in the Lehigh Valley as a family business with her husband and two young children last May. Inspiration for the boutique struck as she and her husband were choosing baby furniture for their own kids but not finding anything special close to home. On a quest for beautiful and unique nursery pieces, the couple ended up driving down to Philadelphia on multiple occasions to find just the right baby furniture. “We saw a need in the area for something like this for people who want something different— rustic finishes like Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware—a unique finish that’s not like the standard stuff you see everywhere else. That’s why we opened; there’s nothing like this around.”

ne of the easiest ways to change the look and feel of a place is with paint. You can dramatically change a room in a matter of a few hours and refresh a space which may be looking a bit worn around the edges. This month we’re talking with Aaron Roche, President of Roche Painting and Roche Epoxy Floors (rochepainting.com) to get his take on

ways to spruce up our interiors. Aaron has been in business for the past 15 years and was born and raised in the Lehigh Valley. Over that time, they have worked with residential and commercial customers, real estate management companies, and custom home builders and contractors. They are currently in the process of building a 4,200 square foot headquarters in Allentown to better serve their customers.

“Those looking to update their home or business should consider painting and flooring as the biggest visual impacts and best bang for their buck. Homeowners looking to provide a unique look in their homes can look into having custom woodwork and moldings installed which can give a room a nice pop from the ordinary,” Aaron says. Businesses that have concrete floors looking for easy to clean, seamless, low maintenance options can look into epoxy floor coatings.

WHAT ARE IMPORTANT THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN HIRING A PROFESSIONAL PAINTER? When hiring any professional company, it is important to understand not all companies are the same. “As an example, all of our tradesmen are company employees that are covered under workers' compensation insurance and our liability insurance umbrella. Even though these items increase our overhead, it’s a smarter investment in the long run as we get better employees,” Aaron shared. Some of his staff have been in the painting trades their entire life and grew up with their fathers and uncles in the trade. Aaron also added that it’s very important for people to know there are gray areas regarding Pennsylvania state laws which come into play. Some companies only hire sub-contractors which reduces operating costs and increases profitability. One of the main problems with hiring these companies is the customer may not realize who is in their home—are they a company employee or a subcontracted one? Someone who is acting as a sub-contractor can bring anyone they want onto a project, regardless of criminal history or their experience to work the job. Another problem which most customers don’t think of is: what happens if someone working at their home is hurt on the job? If someone gets injured at your home and the company they hired doesn’t have worker’s compensation insurance, the customer can be held responsible. Be sure to ask these important questions as part of your hiring process.

HOW IMPORTANT IS THE QUALITY OF THE PAINT? Aaron says that paint quality is important if the customer is looking for longevity and durability with the finished product. However, consider a customer who owns rental properties—in that case, paint quality isn’t a huge concern because they have to repaint every time the units turn over. Knowing the proper materials to use on specific surfaces being coated is also a huge deal. If the wrong products are used you

CONSIDER AN EPOXY COATING TO FRESHEN UP YOUR GARAGE, LAUNDRY ROOM, OR BASEMENT There are many misconceptions about what an epoxy coating is. First, it is not simply floor paint! These coatings are complex thermogenic materials which involve knowledge and training for proper application. Epoxy coatings are durable and stand up to heavy traffic, they are also stain resistant, easy to clean, very low maintenance, and can make your concrete floors even stronger. Aaron said that once the construction of their headquarters is completed customers will be able to schedule an appointment to view all of these different epoxy floor coatings in a real-world setting.

will ultimately be guaranteed failure of the coating. This is where having a professional can help the job get done right the first time.

ANY TIPS FOR HELPING READERS EVALUATE ESTIMATES/COSTS FOR HIRING A PAINTING PROFESSIONAL? When customers are going through the process of getting quotes, Aaron says they need to be clear in what they are looking for (scope of project, which rooms, etc.), have a budget in mind, and share that with the company. Get quotes from similar companies—pricing will vary greatly if you get a quote from a company that has multiple employees vs. someone who operates as a solo painter. Another difference would be the speed at which a project would be completed. Do you need this project completed in a few weeks, months, or just a couple of days? Before Jim Scocozza started The Paver Savers in 2010, area hardscapes looked bleak. Since 1977 he designed and built custom hardscapes through his existing landscape business. Most homeowners thought that these projects would look great forever with little maintenance. As a result, there was settling, weed growth, and moss formation. Scocozza’s clients could no longer relax and entertain outside. He was determined to find a solution to help homeowners get back their outdoor living spaces. So he and his team researched equipment and procedures. They tested products for sealing and cleaning. They experimented on pavers. The end result was high-quality, longlasting paver restoration service, supported by a first-class training program to educate the team of field technicians. CLEAN, RESTORE, SEAL “In the past 10 years, no one has cleaned, restored, and sealed more square footage of pavers than we have,” notes Scocozza. Covering the Lehigh Valley, Poconos, and Eastern Pennsylvania, The Paver Savers is known for their efficient and affordable process of restoring and protecting your hardscapes without the expense of replacing them. In the first part of the process, hardscape restoration specialists will repair pavers, steps, edging, patios, walks, and pillars. They will also address retaining, free standing, raised patio, and garden walls. The next step is to replace the sand. According to Scocozza, the joint sand between the pavers plays a critical role in the structural integrity of the paving system. This sand also deters weeds and insects. After the sand replacement, comes the cleaning. “Concrete pavers, brick pavers, poured concrete, and natural paving stones all need to be cleaned thoroughly before finishing.” The cleaning will remove dirt, grime, rust, paint, leaf marks, and grease. Sealing is the last step. Homeowners can choose their finish. The sealer will last 3 to 5 years depending on exposure and usage. Sealed pavers are easier to keep clean and maintain, they can retain their beauty, and the joint sand will be protected. Sealing pavers and sand joints will deter the growth of moss and weeds and block stains such as wine, grease, and oil. In addition, sealed pavers are protected from acid rain and rock salt.

POLISHED PAVERS According to Jim Scocozza of The Paver Savers, pavers are not maintenance free. He offers these maintenance tips for taking care of hardscapes between sealings. KEEP OFF DEBRIS. Regularly blow or sweep off leaves and grass trimmings. Spray weeds with an herbicide early. All of this will prevent weed seeds from getting into the sand joints. REMOVE MOLD AND MOSS. As soon as you spot green remove it with a stiff brush and a solution of water and mild bleach. This will stop spores from getting into the sand joints.

TRUE STORIES In keeping with the company’s mission to bring pavers back to life and get homeowners outside enjoying their space, Scocozza shared a story about a turkey fryer and a patio. “We had a client in Bethlehem who called us in a panic. Her husband and son were frying a turkey on their patio and the pot tipped over during the process. The area was soaked with grease and the stain covered most of the surface, turning the area completely black. The client was convinced that we wouldn’t be able to get the entire stain out. We used our special oil extractor, along with our regular cleaners, and were able to completely remove the stain. Their patio looked like new again when we were finished, and they were so grateful to have their patio back without having to replace their pavers. We also sealed the area for them, which would help protect the patio from future stains.”

Scocozza shared a second story of The Paver Savers versus Creeping Jenny. “We had another client who had just purchased a home in Easton and was in desperate need of our services. Their paver patio was entirely overgrown with weeds. Creeping Jenny vines covered a good portion of the surface. The area was unsafe, dirty, and just downright ugly. This job was particularly challenging because we first had to address removing the vines and dealing with the damage they had caused to the structure. After hours of weed whacking, we were able to uncover 30 to 40 square feet of patio space that the owners didn’t even realize they had. After successfully removing all the vines and weeds, we were able to repair the foundation of the pavers disturbed by the roots. Finally, we filled the joints with new polymeric sand and sealed the newly cleaned blocks.”

“The #1 complaint I hear is neck and shoulder pain or pain between the shoulder blades,” says Sam Reichgott, LMT, owner of Rockin’ Good Health & Therapeutic Massage in Bethlehem. “I think this is because of our hands-and-head-forward lifestyle: cellphones, driving, desk work. I also see a lot of people with low back pain. For each of these conditions, I often see the same pattern of muscle tightness and weakness among many clients with the same complaint. So, I usually know where to start, to provide some pain relief. Certainly, there are many who get a massage for the relaxation. To make it easy to understand, I describe my massage options as Relaxing, Invigorating, and Therapeutic, but I really think of ALL of it as therapeutic; people’s nervous systems need a break, just as much as their muscles, if not more.”

In the immediate term, massage proves very relaxing and calming, and it may even lower blood pressure according to some studies. Reichgott explains that short-term benefits of massage may include reduced muscle tension, reduced muscle pain, and increased range of motion, particularly in achy joints. He adds that regular, focused massage sessions may result in longer-lasting benefits, such as relief from chronic muscle pain. “Repeated, short-term stress reduction also has long term benefits,” Reichgott says. “Massage can reduce cortisol levels and increase levels of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. Receiving massage on a regular basis can have a long-term, positive effect on mood and appetite, and can help improve sleep.” “With regular massage, the benefits of calming the nervous system can actually affect weight, as a result of reducing cortisol levels,” he adds. “So, the long-term benefits go well beyond just relaxation and pain reduction.” Reichgott explains that massage treatments are available in a wide range of modalities, and therapists each have their own touch and style.

He encourages anyone trying massage to be open-minded and to embrace the opportunity to communicate with your therapist. “If you try massage and you’re not impressed, don’t give up too soon,” he says. “Think about what you liked and did not like about the massage, and communicate that with your therapist, or with a new therapist. If their goal, like mine, is to understand and address the client’s needs, then communication is key. If you’re new to massage, you might not know how to communicate your needs, and you’ll have to rely on the therapist’s training and intuition. After a few sessions, though, you’ll start to understand how a good massage feels, and you’ll be better able to describe it. But if your goal is relaxation, and you fall asleep and miss the massage, that’s great!”

In what’s now Matt McBride’s 14th year in professional baseball, his travels have hardly been local, but for a second straight season, the Bethlehem native will work at returning to Major League Baseball from his backyard, playing for the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. The trip is 20 minutes from his driveway at his new Center Valley home to Coca-Cola Park in Allentown. Until now, though, he’s played for teams like the Class A-Short Season Mahoning Valley Scrapers and the Triple-A Columbus Clippers. He’s played professionally in the Cactus League, and other crazy hot places—and cold ones, too: During his Lehigh University-days’ summer of 2005, he played for the Mat-Su Miners, a college club in the Alaska Baseball League.

That’s a lot of writing on the wall, not that it’s deterring the now-33-year-old, 6-foot-2, 215-pound utility man and heavy hitter who hasn’t played a major league game since 2016. “If I didn’t think I had a chance to get back and play in the big leagues, I don’t know if I’d still be playing,” McBride says. “But I still feel that I’ve got something in the tank, and I’m lucky to still be playing, and to have this opportunity within the Phillies organization.”

Ahead of the 2018 season, McBride signed his first of two minor league free agent contracts with the Phillies, then in 190 at-bats with the Pigs, hit .242 and slugged 10 home runs a year ago. In the 2018 home opener, the hometown hero started at first base, hit a two-run homer in the third inning and then a grand slam in the eighth in a 13-1 win over Louisville. “Most importantly we won the game, but that was a unique and special night,” he says. “I hope we win games this year. I’m going to keep playing, and I love doing it. We’ll see what happens, but you can only control what you can control.” After McBride helped Liberty High to the 2002

Six years later, he made his MLB debut with the Colorado Rockies on Aug. 4, 2012—and impressed: In four at-bats, he had two hits, including a double, drove in a run and scored another. But then McBride split the 2013-15 seasons bouncing up and down in the organization. In 42 at-bats with the Rockies in 2015, he was inconsistent. Granted free agency, after the season he signed a minor league contract with the Oakland A’s, then was assigned to the Nashville Sounds, a Triple-A affiliate, but later called up in late April only to be sent down to Triple-A again. After the 2016 season, he became a free agent again—and so on. In parts of four MLB seasons, which comprise about a year of total MLB service, McBride has a career .201 batting average in some 200 at-bats. In contrast, he’s hit .290 in 1,000-plus career minor league games, where his statistics include 140 home runs. He knows if he could be more consistent, it would lead to more confidence. “Inconsistency is the biggest thing—the most important thing,” he says. “You have to be as reliable as possible. You have to maximize the number of quality at-bats, and be a good hitter no matter where you’re at, Triple-A or the big leagues. Sometimes, it’s just about keeping those nerves in check and settling yourself.” But that’s easier said than done when, instead, worry can overpower production, especially with hitting, and you’re still chasing the dream you first had at age 5. It’s one his parents, Linda and George, still support along with his wife Catherine and new daughter, Magnolia (or Maggie), making it harder for him to leave both for spring training. “I sort of procrastinated packing,” McBride recalls. “I usually do, but I procrastinated a little longer this time.” Of the difference between the levels of the game he

loves, he says it’s often about comfort. “You go up to the big leagues, and it’s a bigger stage, but you need to play your same game without making this at-bat bigger than all your at-bats in Triple-A combined,” McBride says. “I’d sometimes worry about the negatives, and get into my own head, which isn’t a good place to be. Obviously, I haven’t hit as well as I’m capable of in the big leagues, but that also gives me a reason to get back to that level: I know I can hit better than I have.” As a catcher, every team’s focus revolves around converting low pitches into strikes. Data-driven and chockfull of slow-motion video of those who do it the best, the evolution of receiving has changed. So has the role of a utility player like McBride, who earlier in his career “joked that I was just good enough to be wherever I was, and decent enough at a little bit of everything,” but back then he figured his flexibility, his utility, was a longterm detriment. Now, he knows it’s prolonged his career. “Early on, it was more like, ‘He does a lot—but doesn’t have a spot,’” he says. “The last few years versatility has become more valuable. With injuries, teams value flexibility. If I was just a catcher, or just a first baseman or outfielder, I would’ve been done playing four years ago.” Now, who knows when that day will come, or where he’ll be playing when it does—maybe home games a bit further from home inside Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park. “That would be a great problem to have,” McBride says. “In fact, it wouldn’t even be a problem.”

It’s no surprise, then, that “Billboard,” Zelker’s latest film, focuses on fictional Pennsylvania radio station WTYT 960, which protagonist Casey Lindeweiler inherits from his father. Finding the station on brink of financial collapse, Casey decides to host a billboardsitting contest in which four people will live on a catwalk in front of a billboard for the chance of winning a mobile home. The film follows Casey as he finds himself faced with relentless attacks from his competition, the local authorities, the media, and Mother Nature, and struggles to keep his father’s legacy alive and stay independent.

AGAINST ALL THE THINGS GOING AGAINST HIM.

Find your way to your home sweet home. With a turn of the key, you’ve finally made it. The perfect kitchen, that full-sized yard, room for your children to grow and flourish. It’s home, and it’s yours— and that comes with some big questions for your financial future. After all, it’s never too early to start planning for whatever comes next. “A lot of the story came out of my own challenges being an entrepreneur,” says Zelker, who wrote, produced, and directed the film under the banner of his Easton production company, iDream Machine. “It’s more about entrepreneurs, the little guy trying to succeed against all the things going against him.”

Zelker started working on the script about 20 years ago and has been working on the project full time for the past 10 years. “There have been different iterations of the script,” he notes. “We did an interactive play, a web series, the film. It’s been an ongoing project.” “Billboard” is more than just a movie. It’s what Zelker calls a “cine·exerience.” In conjunction with the film, which opens in the Lehigh Valley, New York, and Philadelphia on April 5, Zelker and his team created a virtual WTYT 960, which parallels the radio station in the movie and has been drawing an online listenership for years, and a 25-episode digital web series, “The Billboard Sitters,” which focuses on the four contestants. A regionally staged interactive play, loosely based on the web series, in which the audience and characters interact on social media, preceded the movie and series in 2013. “I try to build up the entire story world, and make it authentic,” Zelker says. “People who work in radio who have seen the movie say, ‘Oh, my gosh, you nailed that on the head.’ Having the radio station for years helped with

ZEKE ZELKER Zeke Zelker didn’t always plan to be a filmmaker. But after a friend asked him for some help on a project, he was hooked. He went to grad school at Syracuse University to study filmmaking, then returned home. “I moved back to the Valley in 1996 and made my first film in 1997. I started my company by refinancing my Jeep.” Since then, he and iDream Machine have produced a number of feature films, including “InSearchOf,” “Body Mind Change,” “Loggerheads” and “Pandemic 1.0,” the first transmedia project featured at Sundance.

“It’s a challenge to film here,” he admits. “It’s more expensive. You have to bring in the cast and crew, house them, provide transportation.” And while Pennsylvania offers a tax credit to entice filmmakers to the state, “You have to have money in the bank to get the credit,” he says, adding that the program is not meant for smaller companies, with less cash flow. Not all of Zelker’s films are set locally. “But I try to bring some aspect of the production to the Valley,” he says. good taste WE LOVE

An ample list of cross-cultural starters sends a brain-to-stomach message akin to “Gentlemen, start your engines.” Asian, Italian, Latin, and classic American flavors all promise gustatory gratification, and seasonal updates keep options fresh and interesting. However, steak enthusiasts can count on one steadfast protein-driven prelude to dinner: Blackened Beef Tips. Flavorful, lean, and lusciously tender, these bite-size chunks—cut from the tapered tip of a whole beef tenderloin—get a piquant kick from a Cajun spice rub before hitting the pan for a quick sear. Sides of BBQ sauce and garlic aioli add dipping pleasure. For an alternate version of this dish, dig into a blue cheese-laced Black & Blue salad.

Consider the Beam Yard a playground— or training ground—for beer geeks. An impressive collection of 24 rotating taps, assembled by Food and Beverage Director Diana Mantore, rounds up trend-setting, seasonal, and limited release brews, spanning imports to local crafts from Saucony Creek, Sly Fox, Funk, and Lost Tavern, along with familiar standards and bottled beers. ANY RECENT CHANGES TO THE MENU? Executive Chef Michael Honeywell and his culinary team pool their creative talents to present tantalizing Weekend Specials that occasionally take a thematic approach—focusing on Portuguese, Italian, and other exploration-worthy cuisines. WHAT’S NEW AT THE STEEL CLUB? Bistro Street, a café-style dining and entertaining venue, will be unveiled in the near future. The enclosed concourse between the back of the main clubhouse and the annex building—which is becoming a sports training and fitness center—offers easy access to the swimming pool and an upcoming yearround driving range.

DO YOU HOST PRIVATE FUNCTIONS? Steel Club venues accommodate business meetings for 5 people, ballroom weddings for 220 guests, and everything in between. The new Bistro Street welcomes up to 600 attendees. WHAT’S THE BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE? For verdant views, General Manager Tom Butera recommends getting comfy in one of the Adirondack chairs that adorn the lawn beyond the patio, which leads to the practice putting green. A massive steel truss suspended from the restaurant’s coffered ceiling serves as a functional centerpiece for displaying bottles and TVs above the 100-foot bar—while also paying tribute to the club’s industrial-heyday origins. Cozy, high-backed privacy booths along the walls offer relaxed intimacy, while the adjacent Eugene Grace room provides a sophisticated setting for fine dining on weekends. In balmy weather, a glass-doored wall folds back for a fresh air connection to the spacious patio—shaded by an ample new canopy—and its idyllic golf course views.
