ELEGANCE RALPH LAUREN MADE THE CASE FOR THE TUXEDO AS WOMENSWEAR AT ITS NIGHTCLUB-INSPIRED FASHION SHOW IN NEW YORK.

Step Inside Ralph’s Club www.ralphlauren.com

formula for a performance at Ralph Lauren’s show — appearing in a tuxedo jacket, white button-up and bow-tie teamed with a full black plaid skirt. Who said femininity isn’t as mesmerising in a tuxedo than in a flirty dress? Ralph Lauren is showing you that it is, in fact, a woman’s mainstay and that it forever will be as long as we all shall live. And who better to slay in a suit than Gigi Hadid? Indeed, the beautiful blond model opened the show in a white button-down shirt with a black bow, a cummerbund and wide-legged pants – a typical tuxedo look topped of with a grey coat. And as if that wasn’t magical enough, Ralph Laurent sent out a slew of models – we’re looking at you, Taylor Hill – in modernised and feminised versions of tuxedos and suits, from coloured satin blazers to new renditions of formal tuxedo accessories. At some point, these formal suits turned into evening jumpsuits with satin lapels, gleaming knife-pleated gowns and one dazzling long-sleeved neck-plunging red gown worn by none-other than Bella Hadid.

Ralph Lauren delivered an ode to the tuxedo and called for a blackand-white evening dress code. 1. Gigi Hadid walks Ralph Lauren Show in New York, where the tuxedo as womenswear was highlighted on the nightclubinspired fashion runway.

The 1920s-inspired line which featured sequin evening gowns and timeless men’s formalwear was housed in “Ralph’s Club”- a Wall Street Bank that had been decorated as an Art Deco, prohibition-era club for the night. Lauren’s Roaring Twenties-inspired collection focused on a women’s tuxedo, with a twist: button-detailing, high-waisted pants, brightly coloured jackets and suede undershirts. Some more feminine pieces included spectacular evening dresses with see-through panelling, feathered bodices and sequins everywhere. The most memorable looks of the evening included Bella Hadid’s red sequins gown with a revealing neckline, a dark purple and black velvet womenswear tux, and a shimmering black leather minidress. The label had help from one of the biggest style stars in the entertainment world: Janelle Monáe. The singer and actress is known for her gender-neutral, black-and-white looks, and she stuck with her

The 600+sqm store is stocked with all kinds of clothing ranging from bespoke shoes, hats and sweaters to Ready-To-Wear garments and most importantly bespoke suits. The changing rooms are also huge and, overall, this Savile Row tailor shop is definitely worth a stop. In the basement of this gigantic store, you will find the tailor workrooms where all the bespoke work is done.

Quintessential Menswear www.gievesandhawkes.com

Gieve & Hawkes, military tailors: Hawkes has been dressing Her Majesty’s Ceremonial Bodyguard – the Honourable Corps of Gentleman at Arms, since 1913, and continues to dress them for every duty at modern ceremonies. As the British luxury brand for gentlemen, Gieves & Hawkes has over two centuries of trading history, and for over 100 years, it has resided at its iconic London address, No. 1 Savile Row – the home of bespoke tailoring and a destination for those seeking the ultimate sartorial experience. The history of Gieves & Hawkes is in fact the story of two separate houses, both established in the 18th century. Gieves became a celebrated supplier of the British Royal Navy and Hawkes of the British Army, with its first Royal Warrant being awarded in 1799. Amongst their famous customers at that time were Admiral Lord Nelson and Field Marshal The Duke of Wellington, two important commanders in British history. Their great victories at Trafalgar in 1805 and Waterloo in 1815 against the French emperor Napoleon established Great Britain as a major maritime and land power, as the British Empire grew during the rest of the 19th century. By serving the Royal Navy and British Army, Gieves and Hawkes contributed to the enterprise. The latter acquired No. 1 Savile Row in 1913, and the two companies finally came together to become known as Gieves & Hawkes in 1974. As the suppliers for ten generations of the British Royal Family, from King George III in 1809, to Queen Elizabeth II, the Prince of Wales, Princes William and Harry, Gieves & Hawkes

52

holds three Royals Warrants by appointment to the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Prince of Wales. This year, under John Harrison’s creative direction, Gieves & Hawkes has relaunched made-to-measure for shirts, suits and outerwear. What’s more is that the reintroduced service comes with new silhouettes and a wide selection of fabrics, many of which are manufactured in the UK. Harrison states that tailoring evolves with the times. Even today as casualwear seems to be the predominant taste, he believes that there are many groups of male consumers who love tailoring and are very specific about their preferences. As to the spring/summer 2020 collection, Gieves & Hawkes envisions the style of an Englishman abroad, with contemporary silhouettes, subtle textures and lots of details. Classic tailoring looks new again with a fresh palette of indigo, slate, terracotta and stone. The brand debuts its lightest construction to date, featuring soft canvases and minimal shoulder pads in half lined jackets, while the made-to-measure service introduces a new wide-legged trouser style for those who prefer a more relaxed look. Details like the Crown Ships 1771 symbol, telescope and compass reinterpret naval heritage. With a forward-looking approach to classic elegance, Gieves & Hawkes is the quintessential British tailor for contemporary menswear.

As an underwater survival tool, the Rolex Submariner’s design has been entirely dictated by the practical needs of divers. Since 1953, it has evolved technically, endowed with features to improve overall functionality, and subsequent versions have continued to set the benchmark for divers’ watches. Starting with the Oyster case, guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 300 metres, the Submariner protects the high-precision movement from water, dust, pressure and shocks. Its Triplock winding crown screws down securely against the case, ensuring watertight security. The unidirectional rotatable bezel’s knurled edges make it easy to set the dive time. The Great Sum of Its Parts www.bugatti.com

Compared to the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ whose top speed is 489 km/h, the Pur Sport is “more aimed at handling, agility, as well as the feeling and sensation of driving,” according to Head of Exterior Design and Deputy Head Designer Frank Heyl. At the service of dynamic handling, “despite this same iconic engine boasting an abundance of power, we reconfigured each gear and calibrated new ratios,” explains Head of Major Assemblies, Gregor Gries. Thus, 15% shorter gear ratio provides 40% more elasticity, and with the W16 unit of the engine revving an additional 200 rpm, up to 6,900 rpm, the Pur Sport can accelerate from 60 to 120 km/h two seconds faster than its predecessor. The chassis has a new setup, with firmer springs (+65% in the front, +33% at the back), carbon fibre stabilisers, and -2.5-degree camber values. “This setup makes the Chiron Pur Sport steer more directly and accurately through bends and maintains the grip for a very long time – even at high speeds. In conjunction with 19 kg of weight reduction, it almost glides across roads”, Head of Chassis Development, Jachin Schwalbe emphasises.

The Pur Sport delivers thermodynamics with its huge front splitter, wider front air inlets and larger horseshoe panel. Downforce in the wheels is possible for the first time by Bugatti. The new magnesium wheel design with optional aero blades in carbon fibre creates a suction from the inside to the outside. 3D printed titanium exhaust is extremely thin yet heat-resistant. Alcantara interiors adds comfort during cornering. Trims and controls are either black, anodised aluminium or titanium, which serve not only to reduce the overall weight, but also for a raw driving experience.

The Rolls-Royce Phantom was first introduced in 1925 by Sir Henry Royce and was immediately considered ‘the best car in the world.’ Every subsequent Phantom model has upheld this title thanks to the brand’s tireless pursuit of perfection, visionary engineering and aesthetic acuity. Recent years have welcomed the eighth generation of the Phantom with a contemporary design and Rolls-Royce’s ‘Architecture of Luxury,’ their signature interpretation of luxury, which lies in small-volume manufacture. “This realization was a moment of clarity about the destiny of Rolls-Royce,” explains Torsten MüllerÖtvös, Chief Executive Officer of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “Every one of

our customers – each a connoisseur of luxury in the extreme – were asking for something more individual to them, not less.” Starting with the New Phantom, every new Rolls-Royce will follow in this new Architecture of Luxury approach. Following this new approach, the New Phantom, features an all-aluminium spaceframe structure designed for lightness, performance and handling. The new design maintains the Phantom’s iconic 2:1 proportions with a short front and long rear overhang. The Pantheon grille, made from hand-polished stainless steel, has also undergone a revisitation and for the first time has been integrated into the surrounding bodywork. It has a futuristic design and a slightly elevated positioning. The rear of the vehicle with its flowing lines, recalls that of models from the 1950s and 60s. Lastly, 22inch wheels complete the design proportions while delivering a ‘Magic Carpet Ride.’ The car is powered by a 6.75-liter V12 engine with two turbochargers that delivers 563 bhp or 420 kW of power. Additionally the vehicle also boasts impeccable insulation thus becoming ‘the most silent motor car in the world.’

Royal Huisman anticipates the excitement of day sailing and superyacht racing with one project: LOTUS. The new concept rethinks the rig, styling, technology and performance. Helicopter Services Malta, an established aviation company that has experienced a significant growth during the last years, kept busy despite the pandemic. It signed on a AW109 and AS350 for yacht heli-ops, strengthened its consultancy services with shipyards for new builds projects; launched Helicopter Services Switzerland; and, last but not least, opened a new base in Albenga, Italy at Riviera Airport, an ideal position serving the south of France and the Italian Riviera.

Beyond The Blue Horizon

Discretion, quality and innovation - Lürssen, the German shipbuilder of bespoke superyachts continues to exceed expectations as a younger generation of yacht owners seek new experiences on board.

Below: Pictured against the London skyline (© Michal Baginski), the Kismet, 95.2m, was designed by Espen Oeino, with Reymond Langton interiors. In addition to two helipads, unique features include a private observation platform with an outdoor bed (© Guillaume Plisson). The Kismet accommodates 16 guests and 28 crew members.

Now in its fourth generation, Bremen-based Lürssen Yachts is headed by the two cousins Friedrich and Peter Lürssen. The German shipbuilder has made numerous headlines with superyachts such as the 180m Azzam, the 156m Dilbar, the 155m Al Said and others. However, Peter Lürssen emphasises that superyacht owners nowadays no longer seek to distinguish their ownership solely in terms of dimensions. Rather, the new generation of Lürssen clients demand innovation on board that can provide more experiences. He also points out that the core business for Lürssen Yachts remains 50- to 80-metre projects. While Lürssen still builds an average of one superyacht over 90 metres every year, 60% of its projects are below 90 metres. Peter Lürssen explains: “We see more demand from younger customers from Asia, Russia and the United States for more innovative design and wellness facilities. Some of the yachts are similar to luxury hotels with gyms and spas. Water sports equipment is more important than sunbathing decks and bars. We make a conscious effort for each project to be unique, so there is no Lürssen signature look. All our clients find a lot of assurance knowing that the entire project is manufactured exclusively in Germany.” Lürssen projects have realised many bespoke experiential features over the

Client demands continue to evolve, but the code of conduct at Lürssen Yachts still centers around utmost discretion. Peter Lürssen continues: “Every bespoke project is given a project name and reference number. We never give out the customer’s name. In fact, to the outside world, we rarely give out figures either. With our 2800 employees in the whole Lürssen group we have the man power and think tank to handle innovative and technically high demanding projects.”

Founded in 2016, Atelier Monolit is a creative studio specialized in communicating architectural projects and ideas through carefully crafted imagery. The studio is the result of the collaboration between architects Ioan Ralea-Toma and Vlad Andrei Popa who share a passion for visualization, photography and graphic design. Their designs continually challenge the status-quo to capture the essence of the intended location or idea. The design concept behind the Beach House is one where absolute freedom of body and mind prevail. The project has been envisioned for a young couple with a passion for the outdoors. The minimalist structure with contemporary look features large floor-to-ceiling windows that convey a sense of unity with the surrounding landscape, whilst offering its residents spectacular views of the surrounding area. In Château Vaux-le-Vicomte’s fountains, the two pools created by Le Nôtre disappeared in the 18th century, and were restituted in the late 19th century by the architect Hyppolite Destailleurs, but with some differences: they were made larger and two groups of sculptures were placed at their centre, representing Tritons and Naiads blowing water from a shell. Designed between 1888 and 1889, the fountains were done by the sculptor Emile Peynot. The restoration began 130 years later, in 2019, and cost EUR €710,000, financed by Vaux-le-Vicomte, Marina Kellen French Foundation, DRAC, Région Ile-de-France and Département de Seine et Marne. Each sculpture weighing three tons took 1,800 hours of work in the foundry, and the group is covered with 7,000 pieces of gold leaves.

Extensive travellers and Francophiles, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor were regulars and kept a suite at the Ritz Paris, where they would socialise with friends such as Elsa Schiaparelli and Coco Chanel in particular... This pied-à-terre has become such a favourite that, in the 1950s, the Duke penned a part of his memoirs here. Ernest Hemingway, the celebrated author and liberator of Paris once wrote: "When I dream of an afterlife in heaven, the action always takes place at the Ritz Paris."

Offering 55sqm with views over the Grand Jardin or the Vendôme Terrace, the Grand Deluxe room exudes a very aristocratic air. With a canopy bed to go with it, the Grand Deluxe room is an invitation to experience Paris in its purest neo-classical style. Woodwork, moldings, lithographs and "the charms of the past" harmoniously integrate state-of-the-art equipment and amenities. As an extension of the bedroom, this living space lends the room all the charm of a pied à terre in the heart of the French capital. A sofa, a coffee table and a beautiful fireplace invite you to while away the hours, work or even entertain comfortably — a home away from home. 260

The Ritz Paris counts 16 unique Prestige Suites. Each one is like a little excerpt of what makes private Parisian mansions so special, and pays tribute to the illustrious guests who will forever embody the history of this iconic address. In Suite Ernest Hemingway, the carefully stocked library is a central feature of the living room, while little-known photographs of the famed journalist and correspondent give the space true cachet. Suite F. Scott Fitzgerald is dressed in variations of gold fabrics and silks. The carved woodwork and padded velvet seats delicately highlight the black and white works, as well as shots of the dandy globetrotter. Suite Coco Chanel, like the iconic designer who decorated her suite herself in her day, is done entirely in black and white. There are photographs, drawings and works of art that originally belonged to the designer and are mostly unfamiliar to the general public. With its mansard ceiling, Suite Maria Callas is an intimate refuge worthy of the greatest diva of all time, in a colour scheme of powdery pink and pastels, with views from the Eiffel Tower over the rooftops of the capital. Suite Charles Chaplin's vista of the Vendôme Column, the double salon, the filmmaker’s personal photos and memorabilia invite genuine enjoyment. Suite Chopin features a painted ceiling listed as a Historic Monument, with a grand piano in the living room. Done entirely in woodwork, like a private library, Suite Marcel Proust is tribute to one of French literature’s greatest writers.

Suite Vendôme, aristocratic and majestic, is a grandiloquent tribute to the square for which it is named, the most prestigious in Paris. Its living area is worthy of beautiful Parisian private mansions with two conversation areas and an immense bedroom, with meticulous attention to the tiniest details.
