CAMPAIGN

Fashion Devotion www.dolcegabbana.com

“STYLE IS PERSONALITY. IT’S THE ABILITY TO LOOK AT THINGS BEYOND FASHION AND THE SELF-CONFIDENCE TO TRANSFORM EVEN THE SIMPLEST THING INTO SOMETHING SPECIAL.” - DOLCE & GABBANA This fall-winter season Dolce & Gabbana turn to Rome as the setting of their latest advertising campaign. The campaign, photographed by long-time collaborators Luca and Alessandro Morelli, features a gorgeous cast of models and millennials that include Aira Ferreira, Cameron Dallas, Chiara Scelsi, Hyun Jishin, Paris Brosnan, Samile Bermannelli and Sija Titko to mention a few. The young millennials are captured in typical Roman settings: alongside nuns with the Trevi Fountain in the background, walking along St. Peter’s Square, posing with gladiators before the Colosseum, taking selfies with tourists along the Spanish Steps and eating pasta at an outdoor restaurant. #DGROMA pictures the young crowd clad in embroidered coats, sequined tops, brocade pants, vibrant leopard prints, dresses adorned in lace and ruff les from the latest collection. The colorful looks of the collection stand out from the Eternal City’s iconic landmarks. Predominant accessories include headbands, oversized sunglasses and the season’s “it” handbag: the Devotion bag.

“Our fashion is for us, it’s an expression; first of all of life, I put all of myself in my fashion. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad, but this is a mirror, an expression about Domenico and Stefano. It’s not just a profession: it’s a person with a lot of personality.”

“It’s such an iconic brand and Karl is a genius, and I’ve been admiring everything he’s done since I was a little girl, so it’s such a pleasure working with him. He’s like the king of fashion and we had a really, really interesting photo shoot,” Penélope Cruz “My earliest memory isn’t of a boat, but the sound of a boat,” commented Karl Lagerfeld. And a boat was exactly what he used as the backdrop for the presentation of Chanel’s nautical themed Cruise Collection. The collection, a nostalgic nod to 1920s-inspired holiday fashion featured feminine silhouettes, signature tweed and a predominance of white tones. Over the years, Chanel’s advertising campaigns have become fashion items under Lagerfeld’s expert eye exquisitely portraying beauties along the likes of Margot Robbie, Tilda Swinton, Gisele Bündchen, Vanessa Paradis and Keira Knightley. For their latest campaign, Chanel turns to Penélope Cruz. The Spanish Oscar-winning actress, who has worked on numerous projects with other fashion labels, has for years admired Chanel’s unique style. “They have created this fantasy,” she explains, “it makes you dream.” “It’s such an iconic brand and Karl is a genius,” she describes, “I’ve been admiring everything he’s done since I was a little girl, so it’s such a pleasure working with him.” She praises Lagerfeld’s work at Chanel saying “It’s just pure magic what he creates and the fact that he continues to do it to, to keep reinventing everything at the same time you see something that is Chanel and you recognize it in a second.” Frame after frame, Lagerfeld has captured the ‘Spanish enchantress’ as she dreams of her next destination, recalls a past holiday and gazes out into the horizon in a gorgeous series of black-and-white photographs. “He doesn’t direct you a lot but I got his rhythm and I loved that he gave

me that freedom,” she explains. “I imagined situations and characters and that’s what he wanted from me; to capture real moments.” The shoot captures the actress elegantly bringing to life Chanel’s latest creations while at the same time exuding an air of travel and adventure. Cruz brings to life Chanel’s iconic tweed jackets and berets with playful warmth. She stares onto the camera, longingly for her next seaside holiday wearing summery striped knits. In another shot, she poses in an elegant evening dress as a cool sea breeze caresses her. And then she dons a tweed beret with crossed arms wearing a cozy white sweater emblazoned with the words ‘La Pausa.’ La Pausa was the name of Coco Chanel’s holiday villa in Southern France. “I understand very well why Chanel chose that place close to the Riviera,” adds Cruz, “this quiet, this calm, this time to pause, ‘pausa,’ Spanish word. Anywhere close to the sea for me has a therapeutical effect.” ‘La Pausa’ was also used as the name of an enormous transatlantic cruise liner created as the backdrop for Chanel’s Cruise Collection show. “He’s like the king of fashion,” adds Cruz, “and we had a really, really interesting photo shoot, so to be in front of his camera is an adventure.” And that is exactly what the campaign alludes to, a seaside adventure with Chanel’s hallmark elegance. “It’s emotional to see him walk out at the end of the show and think about what he has done with this brand.” The actress sums her experience alongside Lagerfeld saying, “He is such a genius, a true artist. It is an honor to be working with him”

“KNOWING

SURFING MAKES A

GOOD SURF PHOTOGRAPHER”

LeRoy Grannis

Catching the Perfect Wave www.taschen.com

LeRoy Grannis is considered ‘America’s most important surf photographer of the 1960s and 1970s. Grannis developed a passion for surf at a young age, but it wasn’t until he was 42 that he combined his passion with a camera and turned it into a mesmerizing career. Today, when surf has become more popular than ever, Taschen presents Surf Photography of the 1960s and 1970s, a re-edition of Grannis’ sold-out collector’s edition which showcased his most vibrant work as well as items from the photographer’s personal archives. His iconic images captured not just a novel sport at the time but an emerging lifestyle. “Grannis’s pictures are startling,” described The New York Times. “The scenes they record and breaks they document are pristinely beautiful and impossibly vacant.” As a matter of fact, The New York Times referred to him as “the godfather of surf photography.” His quest for the perfect shot of a surfer catching the perfect wave led him to an ingenious innovation – his famed waterproof box that was attached with suction cups to his board in order to change film in the water. He was closer to the action that other of his fellow photographers and his pictures speak this. Grannis is responsible for some of the greatest photographs of the

golden age of surf culture. He became a hallmark of the California surf scene and earned the moniker “the godfather of surf photography” from The New York Times. In homage to his work documenting the sport he was inducted into Surfing Hall of Fame in 1966. This collector’s edition is a nostalgic look back to the early days of surfing before the commercialization and competition we are accustomed to. It comprises over 200 pages with timeless snapshots by someone who understood the sport and knew where and when to capture a shot.

ARTIOLI STYLE

SELECT MATERIALS

Impeccable craftsmanship and distinct style best describe an Artioli product, yet the story behind each product is much more extensive.Artioli’s story begins with passion, that of its founder Severino who at a young age worked hard to learn the art of shoemaking before establishing his own workshop. As with most quality artisanal brands, Severino’s son Vito joined the company. He brought an air of change pushing for a new collection with innovative designs while keeping faith with his father’s craftsmanship. This

was met with success launching the Artioli name in the international sphere. Their footwear is admired for the use of exotic skins, contemporary styles and of course artisanal quality. By the mid-1980s a new generation,Vito’s son Andrea enters the company bringing a new business approach expanding the product range to include belts, luggage, gloves and leather jackets.Today, the “Artioli style” recognized and highly appreciated around the globe. All models shown are available at: artiolimilano.com.

JEWELLERY

The Brightest Blue Glow Fine blue sapphires are rewarded with top prices at auctions around the globe “Kashmir sapphires are the rarest of gemstones,” explains Graeme Thompson, Director of Jewellery for Bonhams in Hong Kong. “Collectors are prepared to pay princely sums for top-quality specimens, which have experienced a 970 per cent price increase for sapphires over the past decade,” he added. Earlier this year Bonhams auctioned a 12.92-carat Kashmir sapphire ring. The ring with a large Kashmir sapphire and diamonds was originally estimated between $120,000 and $510,000 at their Rare Jewel and Jadeite Sale. The gemstone was sent to Switzerland for scientific testing where its rarity was confirmed as that of an unheated Kashmir sapphire that had been previously assessed by other auction houses at $3,800 - $6,300.

118

The current record for a sapphire was set in April of 2007 at Christie’s New York, when a 22.66-carat Kashmir sapphire sold for $3,064,000. “Sapphires were first discovered in Kashmir around 1880,” explained Thompson, “but most Kashmir mines rapidly depleted soon after. Termed as ‘blue velvet’ due to the superiority of their superb cornflower blue hue, most Kashmir sapphires that appear on the market today were discovered more than 100 years ago.” This limited production of Kashmir sapphires has not diminished their appeal. However, rarity is only one of the reasons why they have become so coveted. Their intense glow of color that by far surpasses all other sapphires adds to their enchantment.

With a length of 4.9 meters, a width of 1.9 meters and a height of 1.6 meters, Audi e-tron is spacious and comfortable with ample space for five passengers. It has a luggage capacity of 660 liters that can be further extended to up to 1,725 liters folding down the rear seat backs.

Audi’s first purely electric SUV is here offering long-range capability and outstanding performance. While keeping faith with Audi’s familiar design, a few stylistic variations have been incorporated onto this car. The Audi e-tron maintains the octagonal single-frame grille with a color variation to identify it as a fully electric model. Daytime running lights are integrated directly into the headlights becoming a new design element. The Audi e-tron also features a first-of-its-kind virtual exterior mirror. This highly aerodynamic option incorporates a small camera in place of conventional mirrors that displays images on the high-contrast OLED displays inside the car. Other significant elements of the vehicles exterior include omission of exhaust pipes and the elegant e-tron logo visible on the charging flap. The Audi e-tron is equipped with high-voltage battery that can store up 95 kW of energy allowing for a range of more than 400 km on a single charge. Two electric motors and an all-wheel drive ensure this model’s powerful performance and handling. The motors deliver a quiet output of up to 300 kW and 664 Nm of torque. The Audi e-tron can go from 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 200 km/h.The car can charge with alternating currents up to 11 kW

EFFICIENCY, PERFORMANCE AND TRANQUILITY

The Audi e-tron features and aerodynamically-optimized design with optional virtual exterior mirrors that achieve a drag coefficient of 0.27. This low drag contributes to the vehicle’s high range of over 400 km. Its standard adaptive air suspension also aids in reducing drag by lowering the body of the car by 26 mm for speeds above 120 km/h.

AUTOMOTIVE The Audi e-tron is equipped with two electric motors that produce up to 300 kW and combine an electric all-wheel drive to deliver optimum performance on any terrain. A new quattro generation provides enhanced traction and handling on any terrain and with any weather condition.

in 8.5 hours while requiring only half an hour at fast charging stations with direct current up to 150 kW. The car’s high efficiency is due to an innovative recuperating system that accounts for up to 30% of the range. In other words, the Audi e-tron is capable of recovering energy in two ways: by coasting recuperation when the driver releases the accelerator or by braking recuperation when the driver depresses the brake pedal to decelerate by more than 0.3g. In these instances, the electric motors function as a generator converting kinetic energy into electric energy. This recuperation occurs in approximately 90% of the time. The Audi e-tron also features an electric all-wheel drive, a new standard of Audi’s quattro generation, which allows to continuously and variable regulate the ideal distribution of drive torques between the two axels.

A Centennial Milestone

To mark this extraordinary milestone, Bentley has created a limited edition of 100 models in homage of the 1930s model which was founder W.O. Bentley’s final creation, and widely considered to have been his masterpiece. Considered Bentley’s finest grand tourer, this 8-liter car was the largest and most luxurious of the time.

“I HAVE ALWAYS

WANTED TO PRODUCE A DEAD SILENT

100 MPH CAR, AND NOW I THINK THAT WE HAVE DONE IT.” W.O. Bentley Mulliner’s exceptional craftsmanship has allowed them to partner with Bentley for bespoke creations including that of W.O.’s 8-litre from 1930.

To celebrate the brand’s 100th anniversary, Bentley has turned back to their founder’s greatest creation: the 1930 8-liter car. This model, the last created by W.O. Bentley was considered his masterpiece and ‘the most luxurious Bentley.’ In fact, W.O. owned the second model off the production line, which is now housed in Bentley headquarters in Crewe. Each of the commemorative centenary models of the Mulsanne W.O. Edition by Mulliner features a piece of the history. They all contain a slice of the original crankshaft from W.O. Bentley’s car. The crankshaft has been incorporated to the elegant Art Deco marquetry of the cocktail cabinet between the two rear seats. As with the 1930 model, the bespoke interiors of this model have once again been designed by Mulsanne, in Art Deco style with a contemporary edge. The color split

Inveraray Castle: A Fairytale Castle in Scotland’s Majestic West Highlands www.inveraray-castle.com Inveraray Castle is the ancestral home of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll located on the edge of Loch Fyne on the Western Coast of Scotland overlooking the sea loch and the picturesque town of Inveraray. Since the 18th Century, the Dukes of Argyll, also Chieftains of Clan Campbell have resided at the castle. Inveraray Castle was also the home of Princess Louise, Queen Victoria’s daughter, who was married to the 9th Duke of Argyll. To accommodate the arrival of the Royal family member, the castle underwent a few modifications including the creation of the grand entrance and the teahouse for family picnics. In recent times, the castle was featured as the setting of the Christmas episode of Downton Abbey. 202

Since the 1400s an Inveraray Castle has stood along the shores of Loch Fyne. The fairytale castle that we see today however dates to the 1740s. The foundation stone was laid in 1746 and by 1789 the castle was completed. Inveraray Castle was designed by architects Roger Morris and William Adam in Gothic Revival style that incorporates Baroque, Palladian and Gothic styles. Inveraray Castle is the ancestral home of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll who welcome visitors to their majestic estate. Visitors sweep past the Entrance Hall into the grandiose interiors. On this level, they visit the opulent and hand-painted State Dining Room, the Drawing Room with its original Beauvais tapestries and French décor, and the magnificent Armoury Hall with its impressive display of arms that bring to life the history of the Campbell Clan. The Castle tour continues with a visit to The Portrait Gallery on the First Floor. From here visitors head to the Clan Room for a more comprehensive look at Clan Campbell’s history. As with most old buildings, Inveraray posses a few ghosts, the most famous of these is that of a young harpist murdered in his bed, now located in the MacArthur Room. According to legend, when a member of the family is a near death it is said that harp music can be heard coming from this room. The Victorian Room with its exquisite Maplewood desk, a wedding present from Queen Victoria for her daughter, is also on this floor.

The central ceiling features displays of the Campbell family crest and those of various cadet branches of the family. The Armoury Hall showcases an impressive collection of arms including: 16th and 17th century pole-arms, Brown Bess muskets, Lochaber axes, 18th century Scottish Broadswords, Rob Roy MacGregor’s dirk and sporran and many other fascinating weapons that illustrate the history of the Campbell Clan.

The original designs for Inveraray Castle intended visitors to enter by the South. When the structure was completed, the 5th Duke decided to move the entrance to the North side of the structure. This called for a long gallery that originally ran along the entire length of the building to be divided into the Drawing Room and the State Dining Room on either side of a rather modest entrance hall. In preparation for Queen Victoria’s visit, the castle underwent a few modifications including that of the entrance hall to welcome the Royal visitor.

The castle grounds or ‘Policies’, the appropriate Scot term, also warrant a visit year round for majestic views of Watch Tower, the Doocot or Dovecot, and Frew’s Bridge. Extending almost 180 hectares, the grounds are one of Scotland’s most beautifully designed landscapes. The gardens cover 16 acres of which most are park and woodlands while two are formal lawns and flowerbeds. During the later part of the 19th century, custom required distinguished visitors to Inveraray, that included Queen Victoria, William Gladstone, David Livingstone and the Earl of Shaftesbury, to plant trees.

Since the 1780s, the Saloon features Campbell family portraits that allow visitors to trace the family’s history from the Earls of Argyll to the creation of the Dukedom. Two portraits face each other at either end of the room; on one side is Field Marshall the Rt. Hon Henry Seymour-Conway, son-in-law of the 4th Duke of Argyll and on the other Pompeo Batoni of the 8th Duke of Hamilton, step-son to the 5th Duke. The Saloon also includes a grand piano where songwriters Lerner and Loewe composed songs for the musical My Fair Lady during their sojourn in the castle.
