Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks Major Expansion for Legacy Community Health in Pasadena
On May 10, 2024, we celebrated a major milestone with the groundbreaking of our new state-of-the-art clinic in Pasadena. This special event, attended by 100 guests, including Legacy and Houston Methodist leadership, board members, and community supporters, marked a transformative step for health care in North Houston and Pasadena.
Located at 1951 Southmore Avenue, the Pasadena Southmore Clinic is not just another medical facility. It’s a testament to the power of collaboration and philanthropy. This 40,000-square-foot two-story facility, designed by Kirksey Architects will stand as a beacon of health care in the region, offering a comprehensive range of services. It’s a symbol of our commitment to bridge health care gaps in areas with limited access to affordable care.
Legacy CEO Dr. Robert Hilliard, Jr. kicked things off, highlighting the importance of our new clinic in meeting the health care needs of underserved communities.
Houston Methodist President and CEO Dr. Marc L. Boom echoed this, emphasizing our strong partnership. We also heard from Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia, State Senator Carol Alvarado, Pasadena Mayor Jeff Wagner and Council Member Jonathan Estrada, all sharing their excitement and support for the clinic’s future impact.
services, the clinic will ensure that quality health care is no longer a luxury but a right for all residents.
“For more than 30 years, Houston Methodist has served some of the most vulnerable across the Greater Houston area,” said Cathy Easter, Houston Methodist President and CEO of Global Health Care Services - and a Legacy board member. “We are proud of this expanded partnership with Legacy in Pasadena and know the community will benefit from the quality resources at this new clinic.”

More than just a building, the Pasadena Southmore Clinic is a lifeline for the community. Once open, it will serve an estimated 40,000 patients annually and provide a wide range of services. From adult and pediatric primary care to comprehensive HIV care, specialty care, and wraparound support
Dr. Hilliard expressed deep gratitude for our partnership with Houston Methodist, stating, “Today is an extraordinary day because it’s historic. We are celebrating what philanthropy and true partnership can bring to a community. This clinic is a testament to Houston Methodist’s confidence in Legacy to be good stewards of every dollar supporting the Pasadena Southmore clinic. We are truly grateful for this opportunity to serve the community together.”
The groundbreaking ceremony celebrated community, partnership, and a shared vision for a healthier future. As we look forward to opening the Pasadena Southmore Clinic, we’re also preparing for the second clinic at Acres Homes, which will have a groundbreaking ceremony this fall. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue expanding our reach and impact, ensuring quality health care for all.

Legacy of Giving: Fundraising with Impact

Legacy Community Health’s “Legacy of Giving” committee stands as a dynamic advisory group comprising board members and dedicated community members passionate about advancing Legacy’s mission of “driving healthy change in our communities.” Co-chairs Linda Cantu and Gary Hammett (who also serve on Legacy’s Endowment and Operating Boards, respectively), lead the committee with a shared goal: raising funds and welcoming new supporters to the Legacy family.
a Mom® +
This year, the committee has identified Legacy’s Becoming a Mom program as its focus initiative. “Gary and I learned more about the program when we visited the Southwest Clinic, and we were amazed that Legacy offered these free prenatal classes to the community,” shared Gary.
Legacy uses the March of Dimes Becoming a Mom® curriculum to deliver free prenatal classes, promoting healthier pregnancies and babies. After completing the course, expecting mothers and fathers are invited to a celebratory baby shower and receive diaper bags packed with essentials. In 2023 alone, Legacy held five showers for new families.
“We realized this was a niche opportunity for our board to provide baby supplies and baby basics for the mothers,” said Gary.
Beyond fundraising, the committee actively pursues “friend-raiser” events to broaden support for Legacy. One recent event, “Margaritas and a Mission,” was hosted by Shannon Hall at the Sloan|Hall boutique, where 50 guests learned about Legacy’s work, networked, and connected with the personal stories of our staff and supporters.

The Legacy of Giving committee also serves as a pipeline for nurturing future board members. It provides a platform for supporters to become deeply involved with Legacy, learn about philanthropy, and consider joining the board. Linda explained, “All great boards look for leaders passionate about the cause. The committee is an opportunity for supporters to gain the necessary experience and understanding to potentially transition to the board.”
By fostering community engagement and inspiring passionate leaders, the committee ensures that Legacy’s mission of driving healthy change in our communities will continue to thrive for years to come.
Legacy's Becoming a Mom® (BAM) program offers four prenatal classes to pregnant mothers. BAM helps mothers achieve their goals and the likelihood of a healthy birth and baby.

PLANNED GIVING
Tax-Savvy
Giving Education Seminar
Legacy Community Health recently hosted an educational session on the strategic advantages of Donor Advised Funds (DAFs), featuring insights from Dan Petter, VP and Senior Advisor Consultant at Franklin Templeton Investments. This session highlighted DAFs as a flexible and tax-efficient philanthropic tool.
“We’re seeing more people using donor-advised funds to create their charitable legacy,” said Petter. “By contributing to a DAF, donors can receive an immediate tax deduction in the year the donation is made, providing significant potential tax savings.”
DAFs allow donors to spread their charitable contributions over time, aligning with their personal philanthropic goals and financial planning.
Contributions can grow tax-free within the fund, enhancing the donor’s ability to support their chosen nonprofits.
We encourage consulting with a financial advisor or tax professional to explore the benefits and implications of Donor Advised Funds. If you have a DAF and wish to support Legacy’s mission, visit legacy.community/ plannedgiving.
