When Christine Ybarra isn’t helping customers at H-E-B’s Central Market, you’ll likely find her serving up a helping of hope and healthy living at the Body Positive Wellness Center at Legacy Montrose Clinic. She started as a patient one year ago, but quickly found her second “job” as a volunteer. “I have health insurance through my job. I was looking online and I live in the neighborhood so I came to check out Legacy,” she says. “The whole facility itself is clean, the people are professional and very cordial with you. They have great customer service, and for me that’s number one.” A referral from her Legacy provider gave her access to the Wellness Center. Christine says, “I come and work out Monday through Friday. I have worked out before at other gyms, but I think because this is so convenient for me, and it’s a nice, comfortable setting, I feel like I’m at home. It’s inviting.” Before long, Christine found herself staying afterward and helping clients. ”I show them what to do and the training process. Felicia Sexton is a great trainer. She teaches us a lot of things, and not just how to work out. She is an encourager and cares about what we do.” Working out has done wonders for Christine too. “I see myself change – from my soul, to my heart, to my mind. When your mind changes and you love yourself, you can love somebody else. I take that positive attitude out of here and out into the world, wherever I go!” Want to know more about the Wellness Center and Body Positive program? The gym will soon offer open house visits every Tuesday. Contact Wellness Center Manager Felicia Sexton at (832) 548-5177 or fsexton@legacycommunityhealth.org for more information.

Have you thought about your legacy? Perhaps you want to honor a loved one with a gift that will have far-reaching benefits. Or, you may want to address financial concerns and challenges with strategic planned giving. Legacy’s Circle of Caring is our new initiative to recognize and show our appreciation to Legacy donors for their planned gifts. George Hawkins, managing partner of Hawkins Laakso Wealth Management, is a long-time supporter of Legacy and financial professional. He spoke with us about the benefits of planned giving.

What is planned giving, and why should I consider it?

Planned giving is the opportunity for an individual or a family to make a current charitable gift and to continue making gifts as a legacy in their wills and estate plans. These gifts, made during life or through the donor’s estate, strengthen the ability to provide for future generations.

What are some types of planned gifts?

There are many different charitable giving techniques, including immediate outright gifts (like cash), appreciated securities, closely held stock, real estate, personal property, and other assets. Other gifts known as “deferred,” “planned,” or “life income” gifts can provide an immediate income tax deduction and other tax advantages.
