Reentry Planning The Process Legacy Christian Academy has established six COVID-19 Crisis-Management Teams, each of which is working diligently to develop a reentry strategy that prepares our school to operate in the most relational environment allowed, keeping the health and safety of our community as our number one priority. Flexibility and transparency are hallmarks of our planning process. As school leaders prepare the campus to support students in the fall of 2020, we recognize that some families may not be comfortable with their child(ren) returning at that time. Therefore, we have developed two reentry options for our families to navigate.

Educational Options Our campus is scheduled to open on August 13 unless government authorities mandate that schools remain closed. School leadership recognizes that some families may not be comfortable with their child(ren) returning at this time and has developed two education options.

OPTION 1: ON-CAMPUS LEARNING CORE CLASSROOMS AND FLEXIBILITY Christ-centered, On-site, Reduced class size, Engaging

In planning for a dynamic academic year, Legacy has prioritized On-Campus Learning, a full-service model that provides the most flexibility for your family if you are unsure about whether or not your child should physically attend classes due to health concerns. On-campus instruction is being provided in smaller, CORE classrooms that limit students’ exposure to large groups of other students. In this context,

CORE does not refer to curriculum or subject matter.

If your child must be absent for personal illness or because you do not want them to be put at risk of infection for a particular time period, then he/she will have access to the curriculum being taught through a combination of video-recorded lessons and live-streaming. The classroom teacher will make arrangements for quizzes, tests, projects, and other means of assessment. Your child will still receive personal and college counseling services and would progress as if they were physically present every day.

However, they would not be eligible to participate in extracurricular activities on the days they are absent from school. Please understand that in this scenario, a child who is physically absent is still responsible for mastering the content and meeting due dates, unless they are personally ill, in which case our make-up policy would apply. This will require parents to provide some level of oversight.

CORE classrooms capture what Legacy values most and what is at the heart of a Legacy education: the special relationships between students and teachers.

In order to maximize on-campus learning, it is essential that class sizes accommodate CDC physical-distance recommendations, which currently call for six feet of spacing between students. Therefore, our CORE classroom initiative includes the following:

Decrease Student–Teacher Ratio • Class sizes will range from 10 to 14 students with an average of 12 per classroom.

• Smaller class sizes allow for a more focused environment that enhances a teacher’s ability to foster relationships and learning.

Increase the Number of Physical Classrooms • We will use every available area on our campus to create more physical classroom spaces.

Modified Schedules and Hallway Traffic Flow • CORE classrooms ensure adequate physical distancing and the observance of safety standards recommended by the CDC and according to government regulations.

The CORE classroom initiative will be implemented for academic year 2020–21, no matter the circumstances.

There will likely be disruptions to instruction, so this plan enables us to be nimble in our educational delivery while maintaining our strength in building strong relationships and fostering community.

OPTION 2: LCA ONLINE (100% ONLINE LEARNING) Legacy Christian Academy will launch an educational option for families beginning in 2020–2021, called LCA Online. LCA Online is designed for families who have already made the decision that they do not want their child to attend on-campus learning for the school year. This is a limitedservice model that is offered at a reduced rate of tuition—$6000 for K-5th grade and $900-$1000 per class for grades 6-12. Please understand that this option requires a parent to oversee their child’s education as if they are being home-schooled. Our Lower School Library team will support the actual LCA curricular scope and sequence for grades K-5 and periodically check in on student progress, but it will require the student to be self-disciplined and able to learn on his or her own with the support of their parents. For students in grades 6-12, Sevenstar will provide both the curriculum and teachers. Counseling services or access to extracurricular activities are not included in this reduced-price model. However, your student would not lose his/her place at LCA if you decide to return next year (2021-2022). You will be given priority re-enrollment status.

Grades Kindergarten–5th Supervision will be provided by our Lower School Library and the Technology Team. This program requires a high level of independence on the part of students and their families, but it will be closely aligned with our Lower School scope and sequence. Legacy will offer five courses: Bible, English, math, history, and science, but this option will also require parents to be heavily invested in facilitating daily learning for their child(ren).

Grades 6–12 Legacy will be partnering with Sevenstar Online Academy for these grades. Since 2007, Sevenstar has been a leading provider of online courses for Christian schools and is currently used by more than 500 of them.

Sevenstar incorporates a biblical worldview into its courses and is respected for its challenging curriculum.

Sevenstar will provide both the online curriculum and faculty support to help families navigate the course materials.

Unlike a traditional classroom, Sevenstar instructors do not lecture and there is no live classroom component.

Almost all the curriculum is learned through independent reading and working through the organized material posted online.

Sevenstar instructors will grade assignments, provide feedback, and answer student questions.

Yes. The full online program will be integrated into our graduation requirements. Course equivalents will be identified in advance and approved by the administration. Online students, however, will not be eligible for top-ten class-rank honors nor for Valedictorian/Salutatorian honors.

Extended Calendar Tap to view our extended school calendar, which has been designed to provide some instructional margin during what we anticipate will be a dynamic academic year. This updated calendar gives us the flexibility to make adjustments in case we are legally required to close campus because of COVID-19.

School will start one week earlier than usual and finish one week later, which will provide 10 additional days of instructional time. If we experience no campus closures, then we will finish the school year five days sooner. Our calendar has five full Staff-Development days, during which students are not required to be on campus. If necessary, these five days can be converted into on-campus instructional days. Legacy will extend grace next year for students and families if any of these calendar-day extensions conflict with family obligations and plans.

Our focus during the first week of school will be on building relationships, assessing growth and development baselines, and navigating new routines and protocols.

Athletics We are governed by TAPPS, so we will align with its recommendations. Please understand that our goal is to provide as many competitive sporting opportunities as we safely can, working with our local government authorities. The safety of our students is first and foremost.

Carlines • The routes for morning carline drop-off will be the same. All students will be temperature

screened while in the carline (before exiting the vehicle). The procedure for afternoon pick-up is in development.

•W e anticipate that carlines will take a little bit longer. Our priority will be to get your

students into and out of our facility safely while maintaining physical distancing. We are evaluating several options and will strive to find the most efficient solution available.

Chapel The continued spiritual growth of Legacy students is paramount. Our students will continue to worship and participate in chapel. We will likely use a combination of mediums to deliver a quality chapel experience to all students, such as prerecorded videos and lessons and livestreaming the Worship Team into the classrooms.

Fine Arts We are working with all of our affiliate associations, such as the Texas Private School Music Educators Association (TPSMEA), to provide trusted guidance and recommendations. In the fall, holding band practice primarily outdoors will help ensure safe physical distancing. We have even gone so far as to increase the intervals between the students in the show.

• With respect to art supplies, we are emphasizing that students make use of their own supplies and minimize sharing.

Classrooms

Lower School, Pre-K3–4th Grade and Spanish Immersion • Class sizes will be limited to 12 students, which will enable us to spread desks across the classroom.

• S panish Immersion classrooms will also be limited to 12. For example, in first grade, rather than our normal class of 20–22 students with one lead teacher and an aide, all of the immersion classrooms will be split into two. Each class will have no more than 12 students with one lead teacher.

Middle School, Grades 5–8 • T he classrooms will look a little different in that we’ve taken out teachers’ personal belongings and additional furniture. These changes are necessary to help maintain physical distancing.

• S tudents will continue to change classes, and during passing periods will be required to wear face coverings in the hallway.

Upper School, Grades 9–12 • Class sizes will be smaller: The target is 12 students for the basic classrooms.

• Larger rooms can accommodate a few more students and still maintain the six-foot distancing guidelines.

• We assembled a task force consisting of parents, teachers, administrators, and students to review both a five-day model and a four-day model. With the guidance of the task force, we are moving to a four-day model. Wednesday is an independent work day with no on-campus requirements. We will provide on-campus options for those that need it; start and end times are the same.

Field Trips If possible, we would like to offer grade-specific field trips. We will follow all recommended guidelines to ensure the highest levels of health and safety.

Lower School •W e are exploring opportunities to bring “field trip–like” experiences in-house to supplement learning.

Middle School • All field trips have been moved to the spring; final determinations will be made at a later date.

• Fifth grade: Sky Ranch • Sixth grade: Ark Encounter in Kentucky • Seventh grade: Houston • Eighth grade: Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C.

Upper School • The senior trip to Camp Eagle has been moved to December. It may become necessary to push it to the spring, but we will make that decision according to the situation when the date approaches.

Lockers

• At this time, students will not be able to use lockers simply because that would put them in close proximity to one another. Students must bring backpacks with all books and supplies needed for the day, and will carry them with them throughout the day.

• There is a possibility that student athletes will be issued a locker during their season to store athletic supplies, but those assignments will follow physical-distancing guidelines.

Lunch

South Campus, Grades Pre-K3–8 • At this time, we plan for all students at the south campus to eat lunch in their classrooms.

• Students may bring lunch from home or, alternatively, pre-order lunch from Sage.

• Lunches ordered from Sage will be delivered to classrooms. This will require an online preorder system with a simplified menu; we will communicate that to you soon. Food allergies and special dietary restrictions should be accommodated.

North Campus (Upper School), Grades 9–12 • Students will purchase their lunches in the Lunch Commons. A rotation schedule will be developed so that some students utilize the dining areas while others will eat in their classrooms. This will provide all students with opportunities to eat in the Lunch Commons, but on a rotating basis.

• To expedite lunch service, we will divide the serving area into two identical sections with a simplified menu.

Students will be required to sanitize their hands before entering the serving area. Floor stickers, signs, and adult supervision will help enforce physical distancing.

• Touchless transactions will be possible through the use of school-issued ID cards with barcodes.

• All hot items will be boxed on disposable dishware and cold items will be in grab-and-go packaging.

Recess Recess will be available to students in grades Pre-K–8 on a daily basis (weather permitting). Recess is an important time for our students to release energy and to socialize. Our facilities department has acquired the equipment necessary for regular cleaning of the playground areas.

Specials Students will participate in PE, art, music, Spanish, technology, and library. Rest assured that your little ones will not be staying in their classrooms all day.

Preparing for Interruptions Following the recommendations from our COVID-19 Crisis Management Teams and the CDC, LCA is preparing for possible disruptions to on-campus learning. In the event that we are forced to close campus, we will transition to Distance Learning.

MODE 2: Distance Learning If for any reason we are not able to offer on-campus learning, we will transition to distance learning. Teachers and administrators have reformulated distance learning to maximize opportunities and to ensure that we continue to prepare strong leaders with biblical convictions who are equipped to succeed in college and beyond.

FLEX Learning Option For Lower School PURPOSE: To provide an effective learning solution over a short (weeks) period or long (months) period of time for students and parents who are currently uncomfortable with the on-campus learning environment. It is the intent of Flex Learning families to return to on-campus when, as a family, they deem it safe to do so.

DESCRIPTION: Students in FLEX learning will be afforded the opportunity to engage with LCA instructional content from the teacher through one of the following methods: pre-recorded instructional videos and/or zoom or synchronous video. Teachers will determine and utilize the most appropriate method for their grade level and content area. Content will be delivered through the SeeSaw platform. Students will complete assignments independently and meet submission deadlines accordingly. Students will have the opportunity to receive support from the teacher via a scheduled appointment. Specials (PE, Music, Art, Spanish, Technology, and Library) will not be able to be supported in the Flex Learning environment.

PROCEDURE: Families will notify the division principal and home room teacher of their desire to move to FLEX learning.

The designated student will remain in FLEX learning until the school is notified by the family that the student will be returning to on-campus learning. Families must also notify the division administration when the student is ill and unable to complete work for the day. Otherwise, all assignments must be completed within the original assigned timeline.

It is the intent of Flex Learning families to return to campus when, as a family, they deem it safe to do so.

DESCRIPTION: Students in FLEX learning will be afforded the opportunity to engage with LCA instructional content from the teacher through one of the following methods: pre-recorded instructional videos, recorded footage from one of the scheduled classes or live-stream/zoom/synchronous video. Content will be delivered through the Schoology platform. Students will complete assignments independently and meet submission deadlines accordingly. Students will have the opportunity to receive support from the teacher via scheduled appointments during the teacher’s published office hours/availability. In order to complete in-person exams, students may do one of the following: a) come to the regularly scheduled exam on the original scheduled day or b) make special arrangements for home-proctored exams provided division-specific security measures are implemented or c) attend the following Wednesday’s proctored exams in rooms with masks [Upper School Only].

PROCEDURE: Families will notify the division principal of their desire to move to FLEX learning. All FLEX learning families must attend the division-specific, FLEX learning online seminar as a prerequisite. The designated student will remain in FLEX learning until the school is notified by the family that the student will be returning to on-campus learning. Families must also notify the division administration when the student is ill and unable to complete work for the day. Otherwise, all assignments must be completed within the originally assigned timeline.

Digital Platforms RenWeb/FACTS will continue to be our school’s informationmanagement system for parents and guardians, tuition and incidental billing, and academic records.

Schoology will be used in grades 5–12 for managing student work, gradebooks, homework, discussions, and assignments. All class assignments, videos, and announcements will be housed in Schoology. Parents will be provided access to their child(ren)’s academic progress.

Seesaw will continue to be used for students in Pre-K3 through 4th grade. Seesaw will be used for viewing video lessons and uploading your student’s documentation of work (pictures, videos, etc.) for personalized feedback from teachers.

Zoom is a video conferencing platform that will continue to be used to provide live (synchronous) virtual class meetings.

Google Apps for Education will continue to be used by students at all grade levels at varying degrees for communication and collaboration.

Ensuring a Safe Campus Specific decisions and plans will be finalized in the coming weeks as more information and updated public-health guidelines are issued. Strategies in the following areas are in development.

Protocols for temperature screening of all students, faculty, and staff before entry to any building as well as testing requirements for individuals with known or suspected exposure.

The use of face coverings on campus if required by government authority or personal circumstances.

Face Coverings, Temperature Screenings, and Sanitization on Campus WILL DAILY SCREENINGS BE REQUIRED OF STUDENTS AND STAFF? • Yes. Students who are dropped off in the carline will have their temperature checked before exiting the car, through either an open window or open door. For those students who drive themselves to school, there will be either temperature kiosks or staff members at the entry point with handheld thermometers checking students before they can enter. Students who are brought to school early to participate in athletics or band practice will also have their temperature checked by a staff member or coach before joining their classmates for those activities.

• Temperature screening of all staff, visitors, and anyone entering the facility for the first time that day will be instituted.

WILL FACE COVERINGS BE REQUIRED DURING THE SCHOOL DAY? First, we realize that guidelines may change. For now, we plan to take the following approach. ●

When we are able to maintain a physical distance of six feet, face coverings are optional.

When we are unable to maintain the required physical distance, face coverings are mandatory.

During the school day, physical distancing will be possible within classrooms, so face coverings are optional.

When students are walking in the hallway — to the library, to specials classes, or during passing periods — face coverings will be worn. When students are working in a small-group setting or discussion group, it is important for them to wear face coverings.

Face coverings and gloves will also be worn during engineering classes and science labs.

WHAT TYPE OF FACE COVERINGS ARE REQUIRED? Legacy will follow the guidelines established by the CDC. If a student forgets to bring a face covering, we will provide a disposable mask.

WHAT WILL BE THE DAILY SANITIZATION PROTOCOLS? Hand-sanitizing stations have been installed across campus. Students, faculty, and staff will be encouraged to wash and sanitize hands regularly. In addition, spray surface sanitizing solution will be available in each classroom.

Commonly touched surfaces such as doorknobs, countertops in the reception area, and shared spaces in all the buildings will be cleaned on a regular basis throughout the day.

We will, of course, be cleaning and sanitizing the rooms every night.

WHAT MEASURES ARE BEING INSTITUTED FACILITY-WIDE? We have acquired MERV 16 level filtration for our AC units. These filters provide the equivalent of wearing an N-95 mask, thereby providing much better filtration of the air as it passes through our AC system.

Plexiglass shields will be set up in both reception areas to add another layer of protection.

How Will COVID-19 Symptoms/ Positive Cases Be Handled?

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY STUDENT PRESENTS WITH A FEVER AT CARLINE DROP-OFF? Students with an elevated temperature beyond the allowable threshold, which will be set by Legacy’s Health Services in accordance with the CDC and local guidelines, will need to return home until the reason for the fever can be determined. The ongoing education of those students during that waiting time can be coordinated through their division administrators.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY STUDENT DEVELOPS SYMPTOMS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY? If a student exhibits symptoms consistent with COVID-19 while at school, that individual will be sent to the nurse clinic to be evaluated. If it is determined that the student is running a fever, we will isolate that individual in the clinic. We will then contact the parents to arrange transportation for their child from campus and encourage them to seek their doctor’s diagnosis regarding the source of the fever, as not all fevers will be COVID-19 related. We will need to know the source of the fever and then follow the appropriate action plan required for that illness if it is not COVID-19.

WHAT IS THE PROTOCOL IF AND WHEN WE HAVE A CONFIRMED COVID-POSITIVE CASE ON CAMPUS? If a Legacy student, faculty, or staff member tests positive for COVID-19, our Director of Health Services will notify all those who have been in close contact with the individual, such as teachers, administrators, and classmates. Those identified to have been in close contact will be dismissed from school. Each family involved will have the option to have their student undergo testing or institute a 14-day self-quarantine.

Those awaiting test results will have to continue their quarantine until the test results can be verified, and will receive direction and resources to support learning at home from their teachers.

IF A STUDENT TESTS POSITIVE, WHEN CAN THE INDIVIDUAL RETURN TO SCHOOL? In order for a student to return to campus, all of the following will be required, based on the availability of testing supplies.

• No fever for 72 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications.

• Noted improvement in respiratory symptoms (cough, shortness of breath, for example) • A negative COVID-19 test result.

• A Letter to Return from the physician or the Public Health Department.

If a shortage of testing supplies exists or retesting is not recommended by a physician, according to the CDC Time-Based requirements, a student must meet the following requirements before returning to campus.

• No fever for 72 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications.

• Noted improvement in respiratory symptoms (cough, shortness of breath, for example) • At least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared.

• Able to provide Letter to Return from the physician or the Public Health Department.

MY STUDENT WAS EXPOSED TO COVID-19 — WHAT NEXT? If a student is exposed to COVID-19 and/or is indicated by contact tracing, the family will have the option of either obtaining a test or instituting a 14-day self-quarantine.

Students will quarantine until the test results can be verified (usually two to three days).
