URBAN CYCLING: RECHARGING THE CITY LENG KEE ROAD

This thesis aims to challenge the possibility of moving Singapore towards a cycling city where long-distance cycling becomes the norm.

Considering the increasing number of cyclists as well as the issues related to bike-sharing, a vehicle-dominated street, frequented by cyclists, along Leng Kee Road is being examined and redesigned as a means to pave the way for long-distance cycling in the future.

URBAN FURNITURE: Creating a Charging Cycle

What if bicycles are re-imagined as energy-harvesting units?

Bike parking can potentially be re-imagined as a discharging point that cyclists can dock their bicycles at in exchange for credits, based on the a mount of energy their bicycle harnessed. charge

These parking spots can, too, become a charging point that allows the public to charge their devices or electronic bikes, or to power any public events.

Together with moveable ramps that both cyclists and non-cyclists can use, a series of overlapping functions is created that bring the public together, creating a vibrant public life.

From a pedestrian-only and car dominated area to a cyclist-friendly public space along the existing viaduct, spontaneous events such as outdoor movie screenings becomes possible. Reducing the restriction of movement in such an area becomes a way to bridge the separation of the neighbourhood as well.

By overlapping the interests of pedestrians and cyclists, the public space becomes rejuvenated and the community can rediscover a new journey back home.

As a continuation of public spaces across the site, this project aims to create a new public space that relates and belongs to the residing community.

BRAS BASAH HOUSING COMPLEX This new urban living unit is conceptualised for a threegeneration family, consisting of the grandparents aged 50 to 60 years old, a young couple aged 30 to 35 years old and a couple of children aged 6 to 9 years old. At the same time, this family manages a child care centre.

COLLABORATIVE OFFICES FINLAYSON GREEN

In this project, an iconic skyscraper is to be proposed along Finlayson Green in the Central Business District area. The site sits right beside an exit of the Raffles Place MRT station, one of Singaporeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most highly frequented stations.

The conventional working and meeting spaces are being brought outside as a way to maximise the views and openness the location can afford This project is an introductory experience to handling large scale projects using BIM.

INDUSTRIAL SHELTER OERLIKON DISTRICT, ZURICH, SWITZHERLAND As a new residential building will soon be introduced into the site beside the university ETH Zurich, an intervention to define the open plaza in this site is required. Taking poetic references from the clouds, as framed by the context buildings, the intervention aims to achieve the effect of suspension, whereby organically shaped structures falls into harmony.

Accompanied by the changing shadows over the day and over the months in Switzerland, this structure aims to demarcate dynamic and changing spaces with shadows casted onto the ground. With minimal details - thin steel plates welded onto thin reflective columns that reflect the surroundings, this project aims to bring out the idea of harmony and balance of space.

‘‘While awaiting his return, I stayed put and relaxed myself in the light evening breeze, occasionally eavesdropping on the little conversations around.

Just when restlessness sets in, the familiar frame came into my blurry sight. Slowly struggling his way up the steps, the old man received several anticipating glances ad created a little stir. He then takes the elevated space with his classical guitar, subtly but gently slowing down the movements in the plaza.

Small chattering softened and footsteps came to a halt.

Everything seems to be suspended in the moment. The crowd of seemingly curious souls looked on, some with tired hearts, but all yearning for the calmness to stay. The beautiful harmony sustained, as his fingers continued to dance on the strings.’’

LANDSCAPE URBANISM LAL BAKAIYA RIVER, NEPAL

for a resilient food production system along Lal Bakaiya watershed

Due to the existing topography in Nepal, the country has been fighting against flashfloods and landslides for a long time. In this project, the focus is placed on the Terai region of Nepal, where agriculture is the main source of income for the population.

Several significant flood prone region lies along Lal Bakaiya river (left), which runs across from the midlands to the lowlands. It subsequently converges with Bagmati River (right), towards India-Nepal borders.

Using the methodology of Landscape Urbanism, research and indexical analysis are performed with the help of Grasshopper and Open Source Data from arcGIS. The project progresses with the understanding of the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s topographical and network conditions, flood risk level and demographic status.

In summary, this project aims to strengthen the food production system along Lal Bakaiya watershed using: 1. manual river braiding techniques 2. relocation of existing settlements 3. creating new water catchment and agricultural guidelines 4. introduction of algae-fish farm units 5. re-establishment of road network and production line

Based on the topography, the water runoff behaviour is analysed. Several areas are then identified as potential water catchments. These becomes the new planning focus for agricultural crops with different resilience towards flash flood occurences.

Algae-fish farm units are being introduced along both rivers, as well as reappropriated road networks that ensures the operation of this food production system. A new network of forest buffers are then introduced along the relocated settlements to improve the community’s resilience towards flash floods.

In todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s urban environment, we are often presented with a sensory overload by the bustle around us. The responsive pavilion is designed to reawaken peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s senses and rediscover their surroundings.

The dynamic pavilion translates gestures into an immediate response of the interior canopy which oscillates as people manoeuvre through the pavilion.

Visitors experience a black box turned inside out as they directly sculpt their physical space, heightened by the effect of light and shadows.

The pavilion is a maze-like structure enclosed by a wooden box with a suspended folded canopy attached to movement-detecting camera and mechanical control system.

Existing structures tend to form invisible barriers.

Thus, perceived usable space and freedom of movement becomes limited, discouraging public life. A reclining body realigns a person’s line of sight into open spaces away from hard structures and frees up their perceived surroundings, creating a relaxing mood in a public space.

PAPER TUBE INVASION

An exploration of the properties of the paper tubes and its function as a beam. Taking the brief literally to Invade the school, we decided to have this shell creature to bloom and take over the site which we have chosen - a highly frequented staircase connecting the hostel and the ground floor open space. The structure rests on 4 points on the site, given the existing corners in between each steps. The curvature of each shell structure is being simulated and optimised using Grasshopper and Karamba.

Abstractly, this big and small creature represents an adult pushing its young along the long stairway, expressing the idea of challenges and growth.
