n the second night of the Democratic Nat i on a l C on vention in Philadelphia, first lady Michelle Obama made an impassioned speech for presidential nominee Hillary Clinton that loosely tied to the history of Stafford County. Toward the end of her speech, Obama discussed the privilege she feels living in the United States of America where she, an African-American woman, could one day live in a home that more than 200 years ago was built by slaves. “Leaders like Hillary Clinton who has the guts and the grace to keep coming back and putting those cracks in that highest and hardest glass ceiling until she finally breaks through, lifting all of us along with her,” Obama said. “That is the story of this country, the story that has brought me to this stage tonight, the story of generations of people who felt the lash of bondage, the shame of ser-
vitude, the sting of segregation, but who kept on striving and hoping and doing what needed to be done so that today I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves. And I watch my daughters, two beautiful, intelligent, black young women playing with their dogs on the White House lawn.” While slave labor built the White House, the materials came from Stafford. 65-year-old man killed after shooting at deputies A 65-year-old man was shot dead after he fired at Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office Deputies on Cool Spring Road around 2 a.m. Aug. 1, sheriff ’s spokeswoman M.C. Morris Moncure said. Deputies were not injured during the shooting. Morris Moncure said the office got a call that a vehicle traveling fast near Cool Spring Road and Kings Highway jumped the median and crossed into northbound lanes, then came to a stop on the side of the road. When deputies got to the scene, no
driver or occupant was near the vehicle. Deputies saw a man, later identified as Kenneth Eugene Bonanno of Stafford, standing a short distance away and they approached him. Deputies saw he was holding a handgun, and he fired at the deputies. They returned fire. Bonanno was transported to Mary Washington Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The deputies involved in the shooting are on administrative leave, per department policy.
Alexandria man drowns in Rappahannock River The body of a 36-year-old Alexandria man was recovered from the Rappahannock River Monday afternoon, Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office spokeswoman M.C. Morris Moncure said.
Identified as Salomon Reyes Ulloa, he was last seen July 31 as he swam with his family, according to reports from a family member. He tried to swim from the Stafford shore to the Fredericksburg side, Morris Moncure said.
The Fredericksburg Police Department and the Fredericksburg Branch NAACP have partnered together and created a public service announcement video that explains what citizens can anticipate during a vehicle stop by a City police officer. The three-minute video highlights: How officers and drivers should act during a vehicle stop How to inform a law enforcement officer if there is a weapon in the vehicle

Mural to recognize all county Olympians Stafford County will recognize all its Olympic athletes at a mural unveiling and reception at the Jeff Rouse Swim and Sport Center at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, according to an updated news release. The mural by Linda Silk Sviland is in the lobby of the center and depicts each of Stafford’s Olympic athletes. Officials will also unveil a case containing a flag with Olympic trading pins owned by gold medal diver Mark Lenzi, and they will dedicate the diving well for Lenzi, who died in 2012. Depicted on the mural are Olympic athletes:

The conventions are over, and reality is sinking in: Americans on Nov. 8 will be choosing our next president among two of the most unpopular, untrusted figures in modern American political history. Well done: It appears Republicans have managed to nominate the one candidate who will have trouble defeating Hillary Clinton, while Democrats have as their nominee the one person who actually gives Trump an opening. Some believe Americans will turn, even if only as a protest vote, to the choices they have been given, to third-party candidates like Libertarian Gary Johnson or the Green Party’s Jill Stein. Color us dubious. But then again, we were dubious in 2013 when nice guy but political nobody Robert Sarvis, representing the Libertarian Party, scored more than 6 percent of the vote in a gubernatorial race that, like this year’s presidential contest, featured two unappealing
major-party options in Terry McAuliffe and Ken Cuccinelli. Sarvis’ garnering 6 percent was surprising (to us at least). But more important, it’s possible, albeit arguable, that his 146,000 votes tipped the race to McAuliffe, whose margin of victory was just 53,000 over Cuccinelli. Democrats are still smarting over Ralph Nader’s 2000 presidential bid, when he may well have cost Al Gore the state of Florida and thus the White House. So it will be interesting to see how aggressive the Clinton camp becomes in attempting to marginalize the third-party challengers. (Trump looks like he’ll be winging it through Election Day, so we’re not holding our breath expecting a related strategy to emanate from the Republican side.) The more Americans take a look at Johnson and Stein, the less likely they are to embrace the overall philosophy of each. Yet with the two major-party options looking so unappetizing, they may play a factor in the end result on Nov. 8.
GOLD: Stafford County is the poster child It seems to me … sometimes we overlook the trickle down effects of national politics and the impact that can have on local politics, as HARVEY GOLD in Stafford County. For what seems an eternity, we have been listening to the donkeys and the elephants calling each other names, making accusations about honesty and mental instability, and with these albatrosses each candidate proceeded to tell us how they are going to make us richer, safer, happier, stronger, more secure, free from debt and better educated. One is going to bring us together, the other is going to do it himself. Frankly, I’ve heard of sales folks selling swampland that sounded more believable and sincere. Our candidates tell us how they are going to bring peace in the Middle East, help the refugees of wars in multiple countries, build walls to keep out folks who are trying to sneak in or want to do it legally. But little, if anything, is said about putting emphasis on our growing needs in Stafford County. Our aging infrastructure and the costs to fix them increase by the hour. Our interstates are in need of repair and are wholly inadequate to handle the growing number of vehicles. All the candidates say it all needs fixing. Yet, the candidates and our elected officials encourage car dealers to sell more vehicles, gasoline producers and sellers are encouraged to produce more fuel and to keep the consumers’ cost down, which puts more cars on the road in spite of the fact the roads can’t

keep up with the burgeoning number of vehicles. And, without a doubt, Stafford County is the poster child for this problem. Our traffic problem just grows and our elected officials continue to look for Band-Aids. Just think of how bad the traffic on I-95 is normally and what would happen if Washington, D.C., or Northern Virginia had to be evacuated. Whichever presidential candidate gets elected will hop on a helicopter and flit off to safety, but what about all the other folks from up there and those living here. Our Congressional folks, especially those who are running for office, should have this high on their to-do list, because there won’t be much room on that helicopter. And, I haven’t heard a single person running for local, state or national office mention that the Memorial Bridge will have to be fixed or replaced within not too many years, and how the traffic trickle down from that construction will make commuting unbearable. Add to this the unreliability of an aging Metro system that needs serious help. Have you heard a local candidate at any level tell us their plans to heal all these problems that are on our doorstep? Our governor and other folks are bragging about all the money they are getting to fix our I-95 traffic nightmares. But they don’t seem to remember that there are many pieces to the traffic puzzle, and if you fix one and ignore another you’ve only moved the problem, not fixed it. That is what we have been doing on I-95 for years. However, our local, state and national traffic gurus forget that our rapidly growing population is a bedroom community and the problem is not just between Garrisonville Road and MasEDUCATION

saponax. We have become a minor megalopolis from New York to Richmond, although some would think to Miami, and so we must look at the entire corridor and fix it not for today but for the future. I haven’t heard any candidate talk about how more single family and rental homes are being built along this traffic corridor and contributing to the traffic problem. Today, you can see more houses along I-95 and U.S. 1 which is our only continuous north south highways. More houses, more people, more vehicles, more traffic. And, what have you heard from any state or local candidates about a plan for workable mass transportation? There are cities in other parts of the world that have adopted methods of mass transportation that are better than anything we have in the U.S. We, on the other hand, continue to rely on antiquated transportation systems that can’t keep up with the growing population. Now, we are even talking about cars that drive themselves thinking this will somehow be a solution. Has anyone running for political office or those already holding office stopped to think about the nightmare of regulating these vehicular robots locally and interstate? Recognizing that all traffic laws, regulations and requirements are not the same in all states or political jurisdictions, we need only wait until an out of state self-driving car is involved in a traffic accident or driving infraction and you see the tangled web we have woven. Which of our candidates are even thinking about this and the legal issues that will follow? Their focus is on more houses, more cars, more traffic and they will look for money to build more lanes until the lanes come up to the front doors of the houses that are being built along the highways. The Lions of Stafford County recently presented Sheriff D.P. Decatur with an honorary membership for exemplary service to the community. This membership was extended by the Aquia Evening Lions Club, Greater Falls Run Lions Club, Aquia Harbour Host Lions Club and Stafford Lions Club. Hair Cuttery, the largest family owned and operated chain of hair salons in the country, will be donating back-to-school haircuts to children who need them most this summer. North Stafford locations include Stafford Marketplace and 364 Garrisonville Road. To Aug. 15, for every child up to age 18 who buys a haircut at a Hair Cuttery, a free haircut certificate will be donated to a disadvantaged child in the community, according to a news release. Certificates will be dis-
tributed with the help of local governments and nonprofits. This is the 17th year of Share-AHaircut, with Hair Cuttery’s most recent campaign donating 55,000 haircuts to victims of domestic violence the past spring. The company has supported a range of local and national causes, including St. Baldrick’s Foundation, American Red Cross, The National Network to End Domestic Violence, American Cancer Society and Girls on the Run.

SimVentions receives $19M military contract SimVentions Inc. of Stafford County has been awarded a $19 million contract for providing technical development and engineering support services to the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren. The work is for the Weapon Control and Integration Department (H–Department) to support the fleet’s efforts in ensuring asymmetric warfare dominance in anti-terrorism and force protection, according to a news release. The required effort encompasses research, development, engineering and technical support as it applies to AT/FP related program areas to include identity management, non-

lethal response capabilities, and system security engineering. The contract is for five years and will run until July of 2021. “We are honored to be able to continue to work alongside NSWC’s Weapon Control and Integration Department in its efforts to support and maintain the fleet’s asymmetric warfare dominance in the areas of AT/FP,” said Larry Root, SimVentions CEO. “Our involvement in AT/ FP began by assisting NSWC in their development and delivery of the Shipboard Protection System back in the early 2000’s —which was born out of the terrorist attack against the USS Cole back on October 12, 2000.”

In addition, each fellow will be paired with a trained mentor from the business community who will support their progress through the program. Home-improvement mall eyes Stafford location A home-improvement retail center could be approved for development on Centreport Parkway in Stafford County, according to the applicant’s attorney, Clark Leming. The shopping mall would encompass 380,000 square feet adjacent to the Interstate 95 interchange, if approved. Jacob Manevich, under the name GAM Stafford LLC, filed the application with the county for Home Centers USA. A secondary application with the Commonwealth Transportation Board would allow traffic access to the mall. The applicant is still determining what type of retail would be included in the mall, but is considering gearing the area toward home improvement. GAM Stafford LLC is working on determining whether or not Stafford would be a good fit for such a mall. NEWS
The Canadian home improvement mall, Improve, is similar to the type of retail area the applicant is considering. Improve, located in Vaughan, Canada, near Toronto, is advertised as Canada’s largest permanent home show and offers one-stop shopping for home-improvement needs. Residents meet responders, vendors at National Night Out National Night Out in North Stafford kicked off Tuesday evening and soon the Target parking lot was jammed with visitors and vendors. The annual gathering, hosted locally by the Stafford County Sheriff ’s office to foster better community and
law enforcement relations, dates back nationally to 1984. The local gathering also featured displays by firefighters, ambulance crews and Crime Solvers. The vendors included hospitals, education resources, churches, martial arts schools and eateries. Along with sam-

Google Voice can scare away the scammers and more A telemarketer called me on my cell phone the other day, and I chortled with delight. Normally, even if you hang up on MARK STOUT one immediately as I did, you know they are only going to call back repeatedly. Not this one--or any of them. I use Google Voice, so I was able to go into my call history and block future calls from that number. From then on when they call, they get the annoying disconnected sound and so they think my phone number is no longer valid. And their call never rings my phone again. If I felt really mean, I could make them their own message talking about the nature of their marketing and perhaps questioning the caller’s life choices. I did not, but the thought that I could is enough to make me chortle on receiving a spam call. Google Voice is not a well-known Google service, but it is one of the most useful. You only need a free Google
account. If you already have a Gmail account, you are set. When you sign up for the actual Voice product, you are given a phone number. That number might be a local one or if no local ones are available, then from elsewhere in the country. That is not an issue since almost all cell phone and landline plans have free long distance. At the Google Voice website you can choose what to do when your number is called. At its simplest, your call can be sent to your cell phone. You can have Voice ask callers to say their name. Then your phone will ring and you will hear who is calling and have the option of taking the call or sending it to voicemail. You can have all callers prompted, or just those whose numbers are not in your contact list. A call can ring your cell phone, landline, your direct office line or all of them at once. You can set up unique voicemails for groups of callers. You can choose to have all calls go to voicemail at certain hours. With a little extra manipulation in the settings, you can have exceptions so all callers go to voicemail at 3 a.m., except your kids and spouse, for example.
And when someone leaves you a voicemail, Google automatically transcribes the message into text and can text it or email it to you. The transcriptions are not perfect, but they give you a good idea of who called and what it is they want. I may feel my phone vibrate in a meeting and a couple minutes later can read the transcript on my Android watch. You can also send and receive text messages at your Google Voice phone number. You can read and compose text messages on your PC as well as on your phone. If you need an archive of your text messages, voicemails or inbound or outbound numbers, Voice keeps it for you. Not only is Voice free, but you can also have multiple phone numbers. You get one for each Google account you have. Have one for personal business, your side business and a unique contact number for the Little League team you coach. All calls can go to one cell phone. So far, the only cost for Voice is if you call outside the U.S. or Canada. Even then, the rate per minute is dramatically lower than the phone company’s rates. A voice prompt informs your caller the call is being recorded. And if it was not already awesome at shielding me from spam calls after the first call, I have enabled Voice’s Global Spam Filtering Feature to block even first time calls if Google knows them to be spammers. I wish my home phone had all these features. Our landline has become essentially useless for incoming calls. Most of the calls to it are spam calls. I’ve replaced our outgoing message, asking friends and family to call our cell phones. For anyone who does not know our cell numbers, I tell them they may leave a message but it may not be listened to in a timely fashion. I also give out my email address in case anyone has to contact me urgently. Google Voice brings a 19th century tool into the 21st century. Olu Olamigoke recalled the time when, while competing for Mountain View in track, he caught the attention of many with his brilliantly colored, kneehigh socks. “I remember telling one of my coaches, one day I’ll probably have my own line of socks, and compete at the Olympics,” Olamigoke recalled. And while he does not have his own line of foot apparel yet, Olamigoke will soon realize a part of that dream when he competes for Nigeria in the triple jump at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Olamigoke, who graduated from Mountain View in 2008 and from Indiana University in 2012, spurned an internship offer from Apple to train full time with Stafford native Skeeter Jackson, who will again assist his longtime rival, colleague and former Mountain View coach Dave Davis next season when he coaches at Colgan High School in Prince William County. The decision to pursue his track dreams
is one Olamigoke said he does not regret in the slightest. For one thing, the Apple offer was not firm, and for another, the opportunity to represent his parents’ native country, where he has dual citizenship with his native United States, was too good to pass up. Olamigoke gained the opportunity to compete for Nigeria when he established a personal-best mark of 16.98 meters at the All-African games in September, which was an automatic Olympic qualifying standard, according to Nigeria Track and Field rules. He says his emotions going into the Olympics are a bit tempered for several reasons. First, he is committed to training for the Olympics as if it is just another event, even though he knows that is not especially possible. “I just need to stay focused and not get too caught up in the moment,” Olamigoke said. “It is the Olympics, but at the same time mentally, you know you have a job to do. In late July football coaches, players and athletic department personnel of James Madison University attended a Baltimore Orioles baseball game at Camden Yards. This came the night before the annual media day for Colonial Athletic Association football at nearby M&T Bank Stadium, the home of the Baltimore Ravens of the NFL. Early in the Orioles outing, North Stafford High graduate Brandon Ravenel began playing with the sons of first-year JMU head football coach Mike Houston. “What sticks out is what a quality person he is off the field,” Houston said of Ravenel, now a senior wide receiver for JMU. “My two boys (Owen and Reid) were with him. Five minutes in, you feel comfortable with him. There is no hesitation. That is the biggest thing that stands out.” Ravenel will certainly stand out this season on the field for JMU, which was picked to finish third behind Richmond and William & Mary among coaches and media relations personnel on July 26 in Baltimore. The Dukes have lost in the NCAA playoffs the past two years, to Liberty in 2014 and Colgate in 2015. Four CAA teams made the national playoffs last year and the league has produced five national champions since 1998. “Honestly, I never look at the polls,” Ravenel said. “I really don’t pay attention. It is the preseason.” Ravenel started all 12 games last season for the Dukes, and he was a first-team allCAA player. He had 57 catches for 683

yards and four touchdowns in 2015 as JMU ended up 6-2 in CAA play to tie for the league lead with Richmond and William & Mary. The Stafford resident was a preseason all-conference pick this year at the Football Championships Subdivision (FCS) level. “It is truly a blessing. Playing in this league, with a lot of talent, it is a tremendous honor,” he said. “I think he is a very productive FCS football player,” Houston said. “Not only in the receiving game but in the return game. He made some big plays last year. He is a guy we want to get the football into his hands.” Ravenel enters this season having played in 36 games in his career at JMU, and he has 115 catches for 1530 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also has returned 10 kickoffs for 350 yards and has run the ball 14 times for 90 yards. “I think he has a lot of talent around him,” Houston said. “It will be hard for anyone to double team him. If they do that, it may turn into opportunities for other guys.” Houston takes over for Everett Withers, the JMU coach for two seasons before he took the job at Texas State. “He is an unbelievable coach,” Ravenel said of Houston. “He took the time to emphasize for us to develop as people. He has come in and everyone has bought into him.” As a rising senior, Ravenel has taken on added roles. “I want to be a voice and be a leader on the sidelines, and keep the guys going,” he said. “I have never been a senior in col-

lege before. I am looking forward to it.” Ravenel was a four-year player and two-way player while at North Stafford. As a senior against Stafford he had 14 catches for 173 yards and four touchdowns. He was an all-state pick and he chose JMU over Boston College, Buffalo, ODU, Purdue, Temple and West Virginia, among others. Other local players on the preseason roster of JMU are junior linebacker David Ezeagwu (Colonial Forge) and freshman safety Reggie Collins, who went to Brooke Point. JMU hosts Morehead State on Sept. 3 in its first game. purchased Brent’s Island in 1791, now known as Government Island. That location, along with six other quarries located in Stafford, provided the materials for the White House along with a number of other notable Washington, D.C., buildings. “Here in Stafford, thousands of tons of stone were cut from our freestone deposits,” MacGregor wrote in an email. “Stone destined for Washington was quarried here from around 1791 to around 1830. Workers, I suspect most of them to have been slaves, split out and rough cut large blocks of stone according to specific dimensions ordered by the builders in Washington.” MacGregor added that a number of different people made up the workforce at the quarries in Stafford. Highly skilled and trained Scottish and Irish stone carvers and masons were engaged in the actual finishing and carving of the freestone. There were also a large number of free black workers and slaves. Most of this work was accomplished with stone picks, wedges and hammers. “No doubt, some of the men engaged in this work became very good at what they did but, on the whole, they would not have been considered skilled tradesmen,” MacGregor said. For the most part, MacGregor said little if any of the finishing of the stones was done in Stafford. The quarried blocks, some weighing up to 18 tons, were shipped north from Aquia Creek to where the final work was done. The stone quarried in Stafford would be used not only in the White House, but the

Olamigoke also said he is aware that in many ways his professional career is just beginning and this Olympic experience is one of several he hopes to have. He added he would definitely like to compete at the Olympics in 2020 and possibly 2024. “I’m just writing my story, so I can’t get caught up in a lot of the details right now,” Olamigoke said. “I am just focused on getting better right now and on touching as many lives as I can. After I retire, whenever that is, then I can take time to sit and think about what I have done. I want to do well,” Olamigoke said. “So making the finals would be great, and anything else would be icing on the cake.” The ability to compartmentalize and not get too caught up in the moment is an ability Olamigoke said he has always had. He remembered how in high school his first goal was to make regionals, then advance to states. “Then I thought, ‘It would be great to get a college scholarship out of this,’ ” Olamigoke said. “And after I accomplished that, I started thinking about the next mountain I wanted to climb.” Working with Jackson has helped him scale that mountain. I want them to always be hungry.” Olamigoke’s parents, Olumide Olamigoke Sr. and Florence Akinsanya, are “over the moon” at his qualifying for the Olympics, the younger Olamigoke said, despite the fact that at first both parents thought he was crazy to turn down the job offer at Apple. “My parents have always supported me in whatever I have done and that’s [in keeping with] Nigerian culture,” Olamigoke said. “My mother said she was not surprised I made the Olympic team because I have always had a tenacious, hard-headed nature.
