ccess to a new mobile phone app could go a long way in helping to save lives—at least, that’s what a group of local leaders and residents is hoping. On Tuesday, the Stafford County Fire and Rescue Department and the board of supervisors accepted a check for $50,000, which Stafford Hospital Foundation raised through its

ninth-annual Golf Cup Tournament on Sept. 11. The money raised enabled fire & rescue to purchase a subscription to PulsePoint’s sudden cardiac arrest notification mobile application. “PulsePoint essentially extends our hospital’s reach in providing the right care at the right time. It turns everyday smartphones into vital tools for saving lives,” said Stafford Hospital Administrator Cathy Yablonski, who helped present the check. Along with Yablonski, Xavier Richardson, president of Stafford Hospital Foundation; Deputy Chief Lori Knowles of Stafford Fire & Rescue, county Fire Chief Mark Lockhart and members of Gwyneth’s Gift Foundation, Jennifer and Joel Griffin,

were on hand. The Griffins’ 12-year-old daughter Gwyneth was a student at A.G. Wright Middle School when she collapsed at an outdoor event July 2012 at school and suffered a cardiac arrest; Her parents lobbied later that if more people knew CPR, their daughter’s life could have possibly been saved. “Some of us remember the tragic day that Gwyneth lost her life in Stafford County,” said supervisors’ chair Paul Milde, R-Aquia. “Since that day, her parents, Joel and Jennifer Griffith, have really stood up and helped make sure these things happen much less frequently.” Jennifer Griffin said LIVES that the goal is to “create PAGE 13 a mission of action.”
