OmniRide to start Stafford service Stafford residents will have a new commuting option starting Monday, Nov. 4, when OmniRide begins operating two new Express bus routes from the Staffordboro Commuter Lot with service to L’Enfant Plaza and the Pentagon. To encourage passengers to give the services a try, fares on the new Stafford routes will be free through Dec. 31.

This is the first time in its 33-year history that OmniRide has launched bus service with an origin point outside the Prince William County area.

The two new routes received $7 million Oct. 17 from the Commonwealth Transportation Board, as part of the Commuter Choice program on the I-395/95 corridor.

The CTB approved a slate of 10 recom-

mended transit and multimodal projects worth $19 million that will help improve the commute on I-395 and I-95. Funding for the projects is being provided by Transurban, which will make an annual transit payment to the state.

In Stafford, OmniRide Route 543 will offer four morning trips and four afternoon/evening trips serving the 14th Street corridor and L’Enfant Plaza. OmniRide Route 942 will offer four direct trips to the Pentagon in the mornings and five return trips in the afternoon/evenings.

The Virginia Railway Express is searching for a new CEO after the operations board announced Oct. 18 that it was parting ways with CEO Doug Allen after seven years.

The board has recommended that Rich Dalton, the commuter rail service’s deputy CEO and chief operating officer, serve as acting CEO while a leadership search is underway. Dalton has been with the sys-

tem for 10 years and served as acting CEO in 2012.

ginia Transportation Commission. Final action on Allen’s departure and Dalton’s appointment as interim CEO will be taken at the commission meetings in November.

and don’t forget Nick Freitas. He is an incumbent Republican in the 30th House District, but he messed up his paperwork and is now running as a write-in candidate.

Another potential casualty for the GOP is their last member of the Northern Virginia delegation, Del. Tim Hugo in the 40th District. He held onto his seat in 2017 by only 100 votes.

When all the votes were counted in 2017 five remained in GOP hands by razor-thin majorities and another was tied. Each of these is a potential pickup.

The Senate is another story. Their districts seem nicely drawn to protect incumbents of both parties with the GOP having slight edge. How convenient.

Alas, don’t expect any sweeps here. It will come down to a seat here and a seat there.

One that’s hard fought is the seat being vacated by longtime Sen. Dick Black in the 13th District. This Loudon and Prince William district is part of the rapidly changing Northern Virginia exurbs, which now perform reliably for the Democrats. It could be a Democratic pickup. The same is true for Sen. Glen Stertevant seat in the 10th District that includes Richmond, Chesterfield and Powhatan. The area has become more and more Democratic since the last time Stertevant faced the voters and squeaked by in 2015.

In the end, it’s all about how much interest this election can generate and how that translates to a group of select races all over the state. I’m afraid it’s a tough environment for anyone trying to make predictions.

Home sales drop, prices climb in Stafford area

The Stafford housing market saw the region’s biggest drop in the number of homes on the market in September, helping to drive a drop in the total number of homes sold, according to market analysis

by Long & Foster Real Estate.

The average sale price continued to climb across the Fredericksburg region, with Stafford’s median sale price reaching $350,000 last month, up from $336,500 in September 2018.

There was a larger growth in sale prices in Fredericksburg, with a 37% increase over the same month last year, and Culpeper with a 16% increase, but the median price in both areas is still below Stafford.

Stafford’s 210 homes sold in September was a 3% decrease compared to 2018, paired with a 26% reduction in the number of homes on the market. Caroline County has seen a 25% drop and the inventory in both Culeper and Spotsylvania was down 22%.

Evaluating the real estate market in September, Long & Foster Real Estate President Larry “Boomer” Foster said, “It’s a lot of the same story in many areas, including Fredericksburg. Home prices are appreciating and inventory continues to contract.”

Foster mentioned that days on market are starting to climb upwards, which is normal for this time of the year.

With interest rates shrinking to their lowest point of the month in early October, what people can afford is going to go up, which will lead to an increase in competition in the housing market, Foster said.

First-time homebuyers should be aware that they’re “operating in a space where there’s a lot of demand and not a lot of inventory,” Foster said.

In the entry-level space it’s a seller’s market, so homebuyers need to come in strong.

Market analysis from Long and Foster finds prices are going up as the number of homes on the market has dropped when comparing last month to September 2018.

Quantico Cyber Hub grand opening Oct. 26 The Cyber Bytes Foundation will host the grand opening of its new facility, the Quantico Cyber Hub, on Saturday, Oct. 26. The event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. is free and open to the public.

The Cyber Hub is expected to be the largest center for cybersecurity located within a HUBZone in Virginia.

The event will feature interactive demonstrations from world-renowned security expert Harri Hursti, an address by Rep. Rob Wittman and experts in the field of cybersecurity, according to a news release.

Guided tours and demonstrations will begin at 10 a.m. Activities throughout the day for the whole family, will include food trucks, vendors and networking.

The Cyber Hub is located at 1010 Corporate Drive, Stafford.

Virginia’s unemployment rate lowest in more than 18 years KELLY BOOTH » BY Capital News Service

Virginia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped from 2.8% to 2.7% in September, state and federal officials announced Oct. 18.

Virginia was one of seven states where the unemployment rate fell last month, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Unemployment in the commonwealth continues to be well below the national rate of 3.5%.

According to the bureau’s data, Virginia had the lowest seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the Southeast. Virginia was tied with Colorado, Hawaii and Utah for the third-lowest unemployment rate in the nation. Vermont had the country’s lowest rate — 2.2%.

“I am pleased to see the Commonwealth’s unemployment rate drop to its lowest point in more than 18 years, a clear signal that our economy is strong and our efforts to attract 21st-century jobs to Virginia are paying off,” Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said in a news release.

Stafford County’s unemployment rate was at 2.7% in August, the most recent month available for county-level data, compared to 3.1% for the same month in 2018.

Since September 2018, Northern Virginia had the largest job gain in the state — an increase of 14,500 positions (1%), according to the Virginia Employment Commission. The Richmond metropolitan area had the second largest gain of 5,300 jobs (0.8%). The Virginia Beach-NorfolkNewport News area added 4,900 jobs (0.6%).

Virginia’s seasonally adjusted total nonfarm employment rose by 250,900 jobs, or 0.6%, from a year ago.

“We continue to be proud that Virginia has one of the nation’s and our region’s lowest unemployment rates, but we must also remain focused on creating highquality, family-sustaining jobs across every part of the Commonwealth,” said Brian Ball, secretary of commerce and trade.

Man accused of domestic assault

A man is being held without bond on charges that he assaulted his wife after she decided to leave him, according to the Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office.

Landry Mabaya Mbu, 43, of Stafford, is charged with abduction, domestic assault and preventing 911, SCSO spokesperson Amanda Vicinanzo said.

A North Stafford motorist called 911 after being flagged down by a distraught woman walking barefoot in the area of Port Aquia Drive and Schooner Way around 8:07 p.m. Oct. 16, Vicinanzo said.

The victim told deputies that her husband had become increasingly hostile recently and she had decided to leave their home.

“While she was packing, her husband came home and began assaulting her,” Vicinanzo said in a statement. “He also took her phone and car keys so that she could not leave.”

The victim was able to escape when her husband went to the basement. She told deputies that he said he threatened her life.

Deputies searched the home for the subject, but he had already left. After obtaining warrants, a deputy patrolling the area found that Mbu had returned to the home. Deputies repeatedly knocked on the door but Mbu didn’t answer, leading them to enter the home and take him into custody after a brief struggle, Vicinanzo said.

Moncure Elementary launches wellness programs Staff and students at Anne E. Moncure Elementary School are modeling healthy lifestyles through the launch of two new programs, the Grass Club and Moncure MOTivator.

The programs aim to foster a deeper sense of community and unity within Bear Nation, with a goal of extending the program to other Stafford County Public Schools, according to a news release.

The Grass Club is an after-school program that engages students in physical activity each Tuesday. Teachers Hannah

Gaston, Kate Terney, and Melissa Walsh saw a need to get kids off the couch and involved in movement and initiated the program.

The Grass Club offers kids an opportunity to create meaningful social and emotional connections with their peers, while having fun in outdoor and indoor activities such as soccer, kickball, or running, the teachers said in a statement.

Cybersecurity certification program to foster tech talent Information technology professionals in the Fredericksburg region now have access to locally based training to help them earn one of the industry’s most sought-after cybersecurity certifications, according to the University of Mary Washington.

The school is leading a consortium of local governments and educational entities to offer a non-credit preparatory program for the Certified Information Systems Security Professionals, or CISSP, exam. The program is made possible by a grant from GO Virginia, a statewide economic development initiative, and King

George County, as well as the Fredericksburg and Stafford County economic development authorities, according to a news release.

Colonial Forge’s Martin comes into his own HUGH RIST » BY FOR INSIDENOVA

After a successful junior varsity season last year at Colonial Forge, then sophomore offensive-defensive lineman Alvin Martin came to a moment of reckoning just after the season concluded.

Then 6-feet and 272 pounds, Martin began to think about what he wanted to do most—play football at the next level— and then began to think about what it would take to get there.

So his parents Al, a retired marine, and Deloris invested in sessions with a personal trainer, while Martin himself attended every conditioning session the Eagles had and changed his diet.

“I started to focus on shaping the body I wanted,” Martin said.

Mission accomplished. Martin gained 25 pounds from the beginning of last season’s JV campaign and the beginning of this year’s varsity season. The hard work and focus paid off this past summer after Martin attended a series of camps.

During one of those, Martin made such an impression that he was chosen to the United States’ Under-17 Select Team for the International Bowl, which will take place on January 14 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas. The U.S. will take on Mexico in that contest.

“It [the selection process] was a long one and very nerve-wracking, but I was

very excited to be chosen,” Martin said.

“One of the factors of the selection process was looking at film and also how you played at camp.”

Martin used the camp experience, as well as the natural physical maturity that happens between the sophomore and junior years, to become a stalwart on both sides of the ball for Forge this season, Colonial Forge coach John Brown said.

“He’s certainly grown quite a bit,” Brown said, “We saw a lot of potential in him last season and when he came out to workouts

in March, we saw a lot of things like his footwork, that were things we liked.”

Martin is determined to succeed both on and off the field. He said he aspires to either be an aerospace engineer or a criminal lawyer, and accordingly academics have been a strong focus, as his 3.5 grade point average would attest. He said he has already drawn interest, but not offers, from the University of Chicago, Princeton, and Harvard.

Brown said it is Martin’s curiosity and eagerness to learn that has been the most

striking part of his development this season.

“I think his curiosity and desire to watch film has been the most important thing,” Brown said. “There are some players you can tell that just enjoy watching film and learning more about the game. Alvin is one of those. That big body Alvin has is great, but it’s even better to see those kids who are looking for that next edge and not just hoping to get by with their athleticism.”

Martin said his love for football and playing it well has helped him fit in well with the Eagles.

“It’s the preparation for the game that makes football fun,” Martin said. “There’s an adrenaline and excitement before, during, and after the game that has more significance than a lot of people realize. I think the energy output we have as a team is where the magic happens.”

Martin said continuing Forge’s tradition of success is important and is what has helped the Eagles continue to work hard despite the loss to Freedom a few weeks ago that ended a 21-game regular season winning streak.

“We are determined to keep the legacy going,” Martin said. “When we lost that game, we knew we didn’t have time to be sad or mad. Coach Brown told us we have to take it game by game and we are conscious about working hard and getting better every week. We are always progressing and that’s part of the fun.”

‘Jazz in Motion’ offers exciting collaboration Manassas Ballet Theatre’s season opener, “Jazz in Motion,” brought collaborations of choreography and jazz to the Hylton Performing Arts Center Oct. 1820. Three choreographers interpreted 13 musical pieces offered by the musicians of the Kim Reynolds Quartet and vocalist/songwriter Mark Luna. Twenty-four dancers and five musicians gave performances that kept the audience engaged with jazz standards, pop songs from the American songbook and pop/jazz pieces composed by Reynolds and Luna.

MBT’s executive director, Mark Wolfe, welcomed the audiences in from the cool and rainy outside to the “warm and sultry Club Hylton” for two acts of musical scenes — all unique with a variety of dancers, costumes, lighting and roles of the musicians. Beginning with Dave Brubeck band’s signature 1959 “Take Five,” the Kim Reynolds’ quartet and a troupe of 17 dancers portrayed a lively afternoon at the beach in bathing suits and swim trunks with classical ballet and modern dance intertwined.

Three couples danced to “Come Rain or Come Shine” from Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer’s 1946 musical “St. Louis Woman.” Mark Luna’s vocals gave backstory to this and to the next piece from 1945, “Beyond the Sea.” The romantic pas de deux by Shady Mohamed and Victoria Bartlett included energizing moves and breathtaking lifts.

Miles Davis’ “So What” led with six female dancers gracing the stage, preparing the way for stunning duo Ahmed Nabil and Hannah Locke. When the six returned, the dancers’ moves and musicians’ playing tapered together. Kim Reynolds offered his vocals for the next two numbers: “Swing Time” with four couples showcasing dance moves from the 40s-60s with classical en pointe ballet shoes, and Nat Adderley’s 1960 “Work Song” with five male dancers in suspenders and jeans portraying manual labor generated a sensual atmosphere eliciting an in-kind reaction from audience members.

The closing scene of act I began with vocalist Mark Luna in one spotlight with two dancers joining in another- their interaction as two voices with the quartet of musicians’ instruments also “singing” “My Funny Valentine.” Red-washed lighting created a reverent setting for Joshua Burnham’s and Kaitlin Frankenfield’s beautiful dance. Act II began with Reynolds’ vocals for his “Dandelion”— three couples moving from modern dance and a classical pas de deux for each — the choreography was vibrant and intriguing.

Debora Greer’s unique interpretation of the song’s lyrics. Both in tuxedo pants and white pleated shirts with loose bow ties, in a diagonal, rectangular aisle spotlight — they exuded strength and earned heartfelt recognition from the several hundred audience witnesses.

Boarding Duke Ellington’s signature “Take the A Train” across the full stage, 13 female dancers in various lingerie and nightclub attire were prop masters with cafe chairs and tables, all the while dancing and stretching, as Kaitlin Frankenfield and Julianne Russell in cabaret hats and suits joined the pajama party.

Greer’s choreography had many dance styles combined with partner moves, interacting with the great jazz music. After the show, the dancers shared that they do enjoy dancing between scenes offstage.

Bossa nova and jazz 1960s standard “The Girl from Ipanema” had a more interactive than aloof Debora Greer with six male dancers, Luna’s vocals and Vadim Slatvitskiy’s virile choreography. The girl leaves the stage alone, but not after giving hopeful contact with each of her suitors.

Mark Luna’s lyrics with Tom Kimmel’s and Jeff Franzel’s music created the heavenly “Never Saw Blue” in 1999. Bathed in pale blue light, with Luna’s sultry, versatile voice and the quartet of musicians, Vadim Slatvitskiy and Christina Franco have their most elegant roles. The perfor-

The finale included the whole cast improvising their own personalities to artistic director Amy Grant Wolfe’s choreography for Ray Charles’ “What’d I Say?” Classical and modern to contemporary — even “flossing” — had the audience clapping and moving in rhythm to the jubilant weaving line. A triumphant reprise of “Take Five” led the bows of each scene’s dancers for the audience to cheer and applaud heartily.

The audience at the Sunday matinee spanned from those whose pop pieces of younger days spanned from the 1930s to young, aspiring dancers. Jazz and classical ballet woven with pop and contemporary dance introduced the generations to an appreciation of the others.
