Stafford schoolboard urged to protect LGBTQ students TRACY BELL

ommunity members, many dressed in purple clothing, addressed the Stafford County School Board on Tuesday about the importance of protecting all students from discrimination. About 20 speakers addressed the school board, many urging board members to amend a written non-discrimination schools’ policy to fight back against prejudice and protect all of its students. They sought to add gender identity and sexual orientation to the school division’s policy. Speakers discussed their fears about potential and in some cases current bullying, and a lack of acceptance and support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning students. They asked SCPS to support them and keep them safe. At the start of the meeting, school board Chairwoman Holly Hazard, Hartwood District, read a statement denouncing prejudice and hate. Hazard said that SCPS seeks to teach its 28,600 students about the limitless power in their potential and their ability to fulfill that potential. “That quest should not be derailed by acts of hate, bullying, intolerance or prejudice,” she said, noting that the school division appreciates the rich diversity of Stafford County. “All means all,” she said, and SCPS “wants a safe environment for all students and staff.” Hazard added: “To create a society and community free of discrimination in any form
