he idea of a downtown Stafford in mid-county surfaced again at the Stafford County Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday.

The board has previously encouraged staff to move forward on the idea with county-owned land across Courthouse Road near the county government center, to obtain feedback from businesses and residents, and to create a community plan.

Redevelopment of the area has essentially been in discussion since 2008, but water and sewer work, street improvements and other related plans are now in the works, according to discussion.

The idea of a live-work-play town similar to Fredericksburg or Alexandria was discussed.

According to a board background document, planners want to create a “heart for the community” and a signature place that represents the county’s values and culture.

Also at the meeting, the board of supervisors heard from Supervisor Jack Cavalier, R-Griffis-Widewater, that there is now a traffic light at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Telegraph Road at the crucifix.

“I first asked for this in 2000,” he said, referring to 18 years ago when concern about the spot was already an issue and he lobbied the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Stafford asks residents to report hogweed sightings Giant hogweed is an invasive, dangerous weed that has been located in other parts of the region, but hasn’t been found, yet, in Stafford County. Officials are asking for citizens to report any sightings to the County Extension Office.

“This is a truly awful species of weed, and it poses genuine dangers to anyone who even brushes up against it,” said extension agent Guy Mussey. “No instances of this plant have been reported in Stafford County to date. Regardless, people should learn to identify hogweed so they can have it destroyed safely.”

Hogweed can grow up to 14 feet tall and is a biennial or perennial herb in the carrot family. Its hollow, ridged stems grow two to four inches in diameter and have dark reddish-purple splotches. Its large compound leaves can grow up to five-feet-wide, and its white flower heads can grow to up to two-and-a-half feet in diameter. It looks very similar to Queen Anne’s Lace, a weed that is safe for humans to come in contact with in nature.

Hogweed was brought to this country in the early 1900s from Central Asia for use in ornamental gardens. Today, the plant has been reported in several states with Virginia being added to the list recently. The U.S. government classifies it as a noxious weed, and it cannot be freely bought or sold. The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services classifies it as a Tier 1 Noxious Weed, which means it was previously unknown in the Commonwealth.

which leads to a horrible sunburn. Heat and moisture can worsen the reaction causing severe blistering and inflammation. Sap in a person’s eye can cause blindness and it can also harm animals.

If you spot hogweed on your property, stay away from it and keep your pets or livestock away from it. Take a photo of it and send the picture to Mussey at gmussey@vt.edu, or Gwen Pote, a county horticulture technician at gpote@vt.edu.

The deputy used the cruiser’s public address system to tell the driver to pull over, but the vehicle continued traveling on Telegraph Road. Eventually, the vehicle pulled into a driveway and came to a stop.

The deputy got out of his cruiser and saw two young children in the backseat of the vehicle. The driver did not open the door or window, prompting the deputy to open the door and explain that she was driving all over the roadway, Vicinanzo said.

Krafft allegedly became belligerent and refused to get out of the car. Additional units arrived and helped detain her. She was unsteady on her feet and her speech was slow and delayed, deputies reported.

A search warrant for blood was conducted at Stafford Hospital.

Throughout the incident, Krafft repeatedly threatened deputies.

She was taken into custody and incarcerated at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.

There are 100 seats and the court found that 11 of them, in the Richmond and Hampton Roads area, were unfairly drawn in order to put as many African Americans as possible into the fewest districts.

That way, these voters will have less of an impact on other marginal districts.

That’s a classic gerrymandering ploy.

Our House of Delegates elections don’t occur until 2019, so we have more time on this. Still, the court wants this sorted out and has ordered an October deadline for Virginia to come up with a new map.

So far, the House majority party, the Republicans, has appealed the matter to the Supreme Court, which given past rulings isn’t likely to act.

The Democrats in the House, however, have drafted their own map and plan to put it to the House for consideration.

That map, not surprisingly, is more Democrat friendly, which leaves the GOP howling that it’s a politically driven alternative.

To borrow a line from the 1942 movie Casablanca, when Captain Renault it forced to shut down Rick’s Café American and is asked the reason, he says: “I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!” At which point a croupier interrupts to say, “Captain, your winnings.”

All of this seems to lead to one conclusion: This endless back and forth on what should be a routine matter is eroding our democracy.

Dueling maps, court orders and a complete absence of fair play aren’t what the Founding Fathers had in mind.

Eager attendees await special announcements as Trump reconfigures his inner circle preparing for the November election or a 2020 announcement. The most recent move raising Latino eyebrows was the “quiet” removal of Helen Aguirre Ferre, the former White House Director of Media Affairs. Seasoned political observers watch with interest as ambitious administration backbenchers lobby anyone in attendance who may be considered a possible ally to aid in advancement.

Again entertaining will be political sharks working the room elbowing anyone to get close to Trump or first lady Melania for a photo op, hand shake or self-advancing political whisper.

The real party perhaps will be later a few blocks away at the Trump Hotel with the America First super PAC, an initiative designed to help conservatives retain congressional seats and state houses. A more responsive conservative Congress clearly would expedite Trump’s agenda.

The PAC is headed by Donald Trump Jr., with former Fox “The Five” personality Kimberly Guilfoyle of Puerto Rican heritage who serves as vice-chairwoman of the organization. All eyes remain on the pair while their growing romantic relationship is fodder for talk show aficionados, and their remarkable fund

raising abilities are demonstrated.

Virginia’s most prominent Hispanic businessman, Vietnam veteran Luis Quinonez, works hand in hand with the pair in development and outreach, bringing in independent Hispanic votes, and encouraging activism and qualified Latinos to become local, state and federal office candidates.

Quinonez previously turned down several administration cabinet positions and continues to support the president.

He told InsideNoVa: “It’s difficult for our Hispanic community not to acknowledge the ongoing economic success of the Trump administration.

This month’s Hispanic celebrations are emboldened because of Donald Trump’s relationship with the common man and woman regardless of race, color or creed.”

What’s also going to be interesting is comparing Hispanic ideology with Latin supporters of Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam. His Hispanic Heritage celebration is scheduled at the Gillette Garden of the Executive Mansion at 7 p.m. Sept. 24.

I’ll be there as well, seeing if Trump’s accomplishments matter, or the phrase coined by former Clinton campaign strategist James Carville, “It’s the economy stupid,” still pertains.

SCPS, KIZNER WELCOME STUDENTS FOR NEW YEAR Stafford County Public Schools opened its doors to students Sept. 4 for the first day of school. There were more than 29,000 new and returning students.

The schools system’s new superintendent, Scott Kizner, and Stafford County School Board members visited the schools to welcome students, parents and staff.

Kizner joins SCPS from Harrisonburg City Public Schools where he served as the superintendent since 2010. He began his teaching career as a special education teacher and also served as a school psychologist.

“For some students, Sept. 4 is the start of their formal journey into the exciting world of learning and being with other children,” Kizner said in a welcome letter to parents.

SCPS LAUNCHES TIP LINE FOR VIGILANCE IN SCHOOLS Stafford County Public Schools have a new tip line to encourage students, staff

and parents to anonymously report suspicious activity in the schools. The goal is to stop a potentially dangerous incident before it starts and keep schools safe.

Banners posted in the schools and central office will encourage everyone to report suspicious activity.

On the first day of school, an anonymous Instagram account contained disturbing information, according to an email sent to parents. Law enforcement was notified and was investigating, the email stated, noting that disciplinary action would be taken.

Teachers and staff also underwent training on active-shooter emergency situations. The Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office put on the program, held at Colonial Forge High School.

School protection officers are now in two elementary schools — Anne E. Moncure Elementary School and Hartwood Elementary School — with a third to come. The officers are there as part of a pilot program with interest in placing officers in all county schools.

One last late start to school year Stafford County Public Schools welcomed students to the 2018-2019 school year the day after Labor Day. As temperatures soared to the mid-90s, staff and teachers at Rockhill Elementary School off Wood Drive in North Stafford got ready for the 598 pupils who would descend on the almost 30-year-old school.

The front office was kept busy by concerned parents with children in tow, all wanting the first day of school to go smoothly.

While some parents brought their youngsters to school, most pupils arrived by school buses. Those at the school for the first time looked somewhat overwhelmed, but a group of teachers and support staff quickly affixed bus numbers to backpacks and sent the students toward their teachers.

Stafford LDS congregations realign boundaries Some members of the Stafford Virginia Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be joining new wards after a realignment of congregation boundaries during a special meeting Aug. 26.

Unlike many churches, LDS members attend services based on geographic areas, which helps facilitate close bonds and a sense of community while also balancing the usage of the church buildings, according to a news release.

Church officials met with Stafford County officials to discuss expected growth in the area. High school boundaries were also considered when drawing the new lines.

The realignment will:

• Extend the Garrisonville border south to (mostly) match the southern North Stafford High School border, and affects Garrisonville and Accokeek wards • Adjust the Hartwood/White Oak border westward to align with high school zones, and affects the White Oak and Hartwood wards.

• Extend the Accokeek border south and west to (mostly) match the northern Colonial Forge High School southern border, and affects Accokeek, Rock Hill and Hartwood wards • Neighborhoods south of Courthouse Road and Shelton Shop Road and east of Mountain View Road and north of Kellogg Mill Road move to Accokeek

• Area north of Courthouse Road and east of Winding Creek Road is added to Rock Hill The stake membership includes some 3,000 residents of Stafford and King George counties.

According to stake President Bradley M. Sant, “These changes have come after more than a year of prayerful study and contemplation. I believe the adjustments will strengthen members in the smaller units, while giving those in the larger units more opportunity to serve.”

The Stafford stake was created in August 2016. This is the first major realignment since its creation, due largely to the growth of the area.

The Stafford Virginia Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has realigned some wards to the current map.

Meanwhile, Sherrod said he prefers to lead by example. It’s not that he is unwilling to talk to younger players, but he hopes that, for the most part, his actions speak louder than his words.

“I like to be one of the first guys out there in TJ BECKFORD practice, go through my drills as hard as I can and watch a lot of game film,” Sherrod said.

Both players have excellent understanding of football terminology and tactics [otherwise known as football IQ], Sorrentino said, along with the other things they bring to the table.

Beckford said he enjoys film sessions because he can often tell by the way a team lines up what play it might run and then adjust accordingly. That’s why, he said, he prefers to play defense, although he was also a standout offensively last season and figures to be a mainstay again this season.

Sherrod said he also enjoys watching film because it helps him be a better defender, and his love for defense stems from his ability to affect the game.

“I love the physicality of defense, the breakdown of plays and the ability to disrupt the play as it’s going on,” Sherrod said.

It’s the ability to do the little things well, out-think and out-execute the opposition, and come together as a defense that figure to be important as Mountain View faces the talented offensive teams that play in the Commonwealth District.

“We can play with any team in our conference, and we are a confident group,” Sorrentino said.

“But it will come down to doing little things well and that’s where I think kids like [Sherrod and Beckford] are important.”

For their part, Sherrod and Beckford say the admiration for Sorrentino is mutual.

“We are aware of his expectations and his reputation for getting the best out of his players,” Beckford said.

Sherrod said Sorrentino’s excitement for the game is the thing he enjoys most.

“He definitely pushes us because he truly wants us to get better,” Sherrod said.

“He has a lot of passion, and it shows. We play off that in the game.”

Beckford said he also likes playing in front of a spirited fan base at Mountain View.

“They hype us up before a game.” Beckford said. “I get energy from them, and I’m happy playing the game in front of them.”

Martin returns as key wideout for VMI football » BY DAVID DRIVER

The VMI football team has a new wide receiver coach this season and Rohan Martin, a former Colonial Forge High standout, said he will be a strong addition to the Keydets.

The new coach is Billy Cosh, a recordsetting quarterback at Arundel High in Maryland and a college player at Kansas State and Houston.

Cosh started at VMI in June after he coached last season at Indiana University, where he was an offensive graduate assistant coach and worked with assisting the passing game plan.

“He knows a lot about the game,” said Martin, a junior wide receiver at VMI. “We have to be there early for [position] meetings. It is going to pay off. He brings energy all of the time. He is a very good coach so far. He was a really good high school quarterback.”

Martin was the top pass catcher last season for VMI and hopes to do even more on and off the field this season for the Keydets, who play Sept. 8 at Wofford.

Last year Martin had 26 catches as VMI finished 0-11.

“My off-season was pretty good,” Martin said. “I have done more as a leader. I took on that challenge. I did a lot more work. I want to be one of the

main contributors this season. I want to hold myself to that.”

Cosh has enjoyed working with Martin since coming to Lexington.

“Rohan loves to compete, loves to play football,” according to Cosh. “He wants to be coached and developed, and wants to be the best in his work. Since I’ve been here, he has detailed his fundamentals and the guys in our position group love to follow him because of his practice habits and how hard he competes every single day. That’s the standard we are building in our room and he is all in. Ro has developed as a route runner and pass catcher as well, and is starting to make some competitive catches and plays in practices.”

Martin learned a lot as a teammate of former VMI star Aaron Saunders, who was also from Stafford and went to Brooke Point High.

“His work ethic was amazing,” Martin said. “After every game, after every practice, his work ethic was amazing, how he focused on his craft, how he focused on football. I am taking that mentality and giving it to my game and trying to be better. That is what I am trying to do.”

Martin did not play Sept. 1 against Toledo due to health concerns, but hopes to return to the lineup soon, according to a school spokesman.

Martin is one of several players from Stafford on the roster for VMI. The others include freshman long snapper Robert Solderholm (Mountain View), redshirt sophomore linebacker Connor Riddle (Colonial Forge), freshman defensive back DJ Dennis (Colonial Forge), freshman linebacker Liam Kauthen (Colonial Forge), freshman offensive lineman Ayden Jilson (Colonial Forge) and redshirt freshman offensive lineman Shane Strand (Colonial Forge).
