The story of Josh Brunais is a long, winding road with twists and turns that often make him uncomfortable. Not to the point where he won’t discuss them; he’s more polite than that. But he’d rather not get into the weeds regarding certain aspects of his remarkably fascinating life.

A morsel here. A nugget there. Rarely the full story.

He’ll take those to JOSH BRUNAIS the grave.

You don’t serve 10 years in the Army – including eight with the 75th Ranger Regiment – without collecting a lifetime of stories, some good, some horrifically bad. He regrets none of it.

“I loved it,” the Stafford County resident said while picking at a salad on an early August afternoon at a local restaurant.

He let that memory float in the air for a few moments before doubling down.

“If I could go back right now, I would,” he said. “In a heartbeat.”

But he can’t. He left that life behind in 2015 when he medically retired from the Army. Those last two years were tough.

Following his sixth and final deployment, he was transferred to Quantico, where he assisted wounded veterans transitioning to civilian life. He was thousands of miles from the real action, the kind of normalcy most people can’t conceive, and he absolutely hated it.

Brunais fell into a deep depression not uncommon among many transitioning veterans, only leaving his apartment to go to work, where he put forth the minimum amount of effort to fulfill his duties. He ate too much. He distanced himself from his friends and family. He was lucky to sleep more than a couple hours each night.

“It was a day to day struggle,” the 32-year-old Brunais said. “It was awful. I was a different person. I didn’t give a shit about anything.”

A visit to the Veteran’s Affairs clinic in 2015 changed all that and probably saved his life. It was there that a buddy handed him a flier promoting an upcoming veterans-only tryout for a scout team that practices with the U.S. Paralympic National Soccer Team. Two issues here: Brunais hadn’t played competitive soccer since his freshman year at Potomac High School, and it never occurred to

him he’d even qualify to be a Paralympic athlete. Paralympians suffer from physical disabilities – in Brunais’ case, multiple traumatic brain injuries – rather than the intellectual disabilities of those who participate in the Special Olympics.

Then again, Brunais had literally nothing else going on, so he decided to give it his best shot. Turns out, his best wasn’t even in the same area code as good enough. He was out of shape and outclassed by the other veterans.

That embarrassment sparked a fire within Brunais that hasn’t stopped burning.

A few months later, Brunais caught the eye of U.S. Paralympic National Team head coach Stuart Sharp during another camp. Sharp liked what he saw and invited Brunais back for one more look. This time, Brunais shined and was eventually offered a spot on the national roster and a second chance to represent his country.

“That’s my favorite story about him,” said teammate Seth Jahn, also a retired veteran. “The dude, in typical Ranger fashion, just fixated his sights on getting himself fit again. Once he got target-lock on making the national roster, he improved exponentially.”

Brunais has been a fixture on the national team ever since. He’s a co-captain along with Jahn and, together, they will lead the U.S. into this week’s Parapan American Games held in Lima, Peru. The U.S., ranked 4th in the International Federation of Cerebral Palsy Football world rankings, opens play August 24 against Colombia.

The U.S. enters a major international competition for the first time with a legit shot at winning. The team returns 13 of 14 players from the IFCPF World Cup earlier this summer in which the U.S. finished sixth, including a win against world power Iran and the team’s first ever group-stage victory.

“With every session, he gets better and better,” Sharp said. “That’s really been his story. He has really become a leader on the field. It gives me chills to say that.”

The U.S. team finished seventh in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Brunais, the team’s workhorse defensive player, was voted by his fellow Paralympians to be the flag-bearer during the closing ceremonies.

“There’s a new expectation now of winning,” Jahn said. “Guys like Josh are re-

sponsible for that. I’d describe Josh now as the most important player on the team.”

Paralympic soccer is similar to ablebodied soccer with a few exceptions: the pitch is smaller (75x55 meters), the goals are smaller (5x2 meters), match play is 7-a-side with two 30-minutes halves, and – hooray! – offsides penalties don’t exist.

The competition, though, is just as intense as the soccer you might see during Saturday morning English Premier League matches.

“It was eye-opening,” Brunais said.

“Seeing guys with [cerebral palsy] sprinting faster than me, it’s like, wow. He has to be putting his body into so much more physical pain to do that. You almost don’t want to be part of an able-bodied sport after you do this.”

Brunais fell in love with soccer as a young boy in Germany, where his family lived while his father was stationed there with the Army. They settled in Virginia when Brunais was in middle school, and he continued to play through his freshman season at Potomac. That’s when he decided to chase his new passion. He quit athletics, but kept training with the sole purpose of becoming the fourth member of the family to join the Army. His father retired as a Sergeant Major, and two of his three older brothers became Army Rangers.

He graduated early from Potomac so he could arrive at Basic Training 10 days ahead of schedule.

“Not many kids say they want to go to war,” Jahn said. “That’s what Josh wanted to do.”

Brunais was first deployed to the Middle East on his 19th birthday. Less than a year later, he was in an MH-47 Chinook helicopter returning from a transportation mission in southeast Afghanistan when it suffered sudden and unexplained engine failure and fell from the sky.

“I looked into the cockpit, and I saw the pilot’s white light on,” he said. “You can’t have a light on while flying at night.

I looked at a gunner, and I saw him brace.

It felt like we dropped forever.”

The helicopter fell 500 feet into the snowy mountainside and immediately burst into flames. The crash broke Brunais’ neck and back in several places.

Adrenaline – and urgency of the situation – allowed Brunais to extinguish the fire by matting it out with his body armor.

Eight men died that night and 14 others were wounded.

Brunais was back in Afghanistan 10 months later, and he was deployed four more times in his career. He was involved in two IED blasts, which ultimately led to his retirement.

That’s as deep as Brunais will go about that part of his life. His new life, however, is an open book. He’s excited about the possibility of the U.S. Paralympic NationALL IN

al Team becoming a full-time gig, which means a paycheck and a likely move to Atlanta. While Sharp was understandably non-committal on who he might select if the proposal passes this fall, he did mention Brunais as a strong candidate for selection.

A promotion to full-time status would cap a trying 2-year period for Brunais, who tore his ACL in 2017 while training with a local club team. He missed the IFCPF World Championships in Argentina, where the U.S. placed fifth.

For now, Brunais and the rest of the U.S. team are focused on the Parapan Games and moving up in the world rankings. A strong showing in Peru could give the team added exposure to a world that barely knows it exists.

“I’ve been part of teams in the intelligence community, special ops, in college and pro ranks, and club teams,” Jahn said.

Though it does bring to mind a quote from President Harry Truman back in the 1940’s: “To keep a black man in the gutter requires a white man lying right on top of him.” It’s generally accepted that segregation and racism held the South back socially and economically for decades.

Are things better? The answer is a classic “yes and no.” The memories of the pre-civil rights era are still fresh. I remember waiting in the “white only” waiting room at the Alexandria Train Station. For me, that was just a passing observation. For African Americans it was one of many indignities and injustices. Memories of these things, as well as the loathsome behavior of some white people, whether it was rudeness and hostility in social contacts, relations with the police, at school, or in formal job or political situations, doesn’t fade that fast.

Perhaps our biggest problem is that this angst, these memories and our current racial issues, which seem to be getting worse, exist in a cone of silence. We don’t talk about it. We talk at each other and we use code words. I suspect African Americans and white people, with differing perceptions, talk about race issues amongst themselves, but rarely do we talk about them together. Of course, the past won’t go away. That’s not possible, but if we could talk openly, whites and African Americans, then maybe it will be a little bit easier to chart a course to the future. I’m up for that chat. I hope other people are too.

Three North Stafford students charged with murder in July shooting Three teenagers have been charged with murder in connection with a double shooting last month outside the 5 Twelve convenience store in North Stafford.

On July 3, deputies were called to the Five Twelve gas station at 1075 Garrisonville Road about 10:15 p.m. and arrived to find two people unresponsive in the parking lot with apparent gunshot wounds to

the upper body, according to the Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office.

Troy Barnett Jr., 20, of Stafford, died at the scene. Laura Guadalupe Gomez-De La Cruz, 18, of Stafford, remains hospitalized with serious injuries, SCSO spokesperson Amanda Vicinanzo said.

On Aug. 19, three North Stafford High School students, one 15-year-old boy and

two 17-year-old boys, were taken into custody and held at the Juvenile Detention Center.

The suspects are charged with firstdegree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, aggravated malicious wounding and two counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony, Vicinanzo said.

During the five-week long investigation,

detectives executed over 50 search warrants related to the case. On Aug. 19, four search warrants for residences in North Stafford were executed. Evidence was seized including drugs, firearms and vehicles.

The incident remains under active investigation, and anyone with information is asked to contact Lt. Cameron at 540658-4711.

During a search of his vehicle, a backpack was found containing drug paraphernalia and several clear bags containing a substance consistent with marijuana, she said.

Coles was charged with eluding, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, no driver’s license and failure to stop at a stop sign. He was incarcerated at Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $6,000 secured bond.

CRIME BRIEFS TWO ARMED MEN HOLD UP GARRISONVILLE DOMINO’S Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office is investigating an armed robbery of a North Stafford pizza restaurant on Aug. 15.

Employees reported that two men dressed in all black entered the Domino’s at 556 Garrisonville Road around 11:18 a.m. and stole cash from the register, safe and from employees.

One of the men was reportedly carrying a firearm and the other man was carrying a knife, SCSO spokesperson Amanda Vicinanzo said. One of the employees was hit over the head with the firearm, she said.

Deputies canvassed the area, but were unable to locate the suspects. The incident remains under investigation.

Stafford schools to make security changes ‘Young-looking’ 26-year-old man took school bus to Stafford High, allegedly tried to steal food GREG HAMBRICK » BY ghambrick@insidenova.com

A 26-year-old man climbed on a bus and walked into Stafford High School with students Aug. 15, according to a note sent to parents Friday.

School officials called the man “younglooking” and said that he was believed to

be a student before a staff member eventually notified the school resource officer and the man was removed.

He didn’t have a weapon and made no threats while on campus, officials noted.

“It is important to note that the entire incident was handled swiftly,” according to the note to parents.

Superintendent Scott Kizner has called for a thorough review and recommendations for any security changes.

“It is obvious that something has to change in our procedures and implemented immediately,” school officials wrote. “While this type of incident may be alarming, it is an opportunity to remind our students and staff to remain alert, exercise caution and report any suspicious activity in the schools.”

The Mark Lenzi Pool at Curtis Park was closed Aug. 16-17 after four participants in a swim meet Aug. 3 were later diagnosed with cryptosporidiosis, a parasitic illness that commonly occurs at public pools.

Cryptosporidiosis mainly causes diarrhea, but other symptoms can include nausea and loss of appetite, abdominal pain and low-grade fever.

There was no evidence the pool was

contaminated, but it was closed out of an abundance of caution to allow for hyper-chlorination to kill any potential Cryptosporidium.

Rappahannock Area Health District also reported similar illnesses associated with Massad YMCA’s pool. Both facilities have been fully cooperative with the Health District and are following recommendations.

Individual who swam at Curtis Park on Aug. 3-16 and those who swam at Massad YMCA Aug. 1-14 and developed diarrhea, abdominal pain or nausea, should contact their medical provider, as well as RAHD Epidemiologist Nicole Sullivan at 540-290-2426.

General public health advice for peo-

ple with diarrhea is to not use pools or Jacuzzis until two weeks after the diarrhea stops. You can spread germs in the water and make other people sick.

Also, practice good and frequent handwashing — hand sanitizer does not kill cryptosporidium. Be sure to use soap and water for handwashing.

The health department also suggests pool users not swallow the water and avoid getting the water in their mouth, shower with soap and water before and after swimming, and take children on bathroom breaks and check diapers often.

No business or individual is immune to disasters. Even disasters far away can impact Virginia business by disrupting supply chains and communications. Small businesses are particularly vulnerable when it comes to natural disasters since they often have fewer resources, locations and employees to help them become operational again, according to a news release.

Know what your policies cover and how much you will need to make repairs and

pay creditors, employees and yourself in the event of a disaster.

“How you plan for, and deal with, disasters can determine whether your business survives,” said Virginia Insurance Commissioner Scott A. White. “Having the right insurance coverage and keeping it updated regularly is a must when preparing for the unexpected.”

Businesses should determine whether additional or separate coverages are needed.

For example, standard business insurance

policies typically do not cover damage from certain types of disasters, such as floods and earthquakes, and separate coverage may be needed. Similarly, businesses may need to buy separate automobile insurance for cars and other vehicles because standard business policies cover only real property. Another option to consider is business interruption insurance, which covers the loss of income that a business suffers after a disaster.

The Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce recently announced the Leadership Fredericksburg Class of 2020.

Beginning in September, the program will conclude with a graduation ceremony in May 2020, according to a news release.

Sessions occur at various business locations throughout the Fredericksburg region and include in-depth leadership skills development and meetings with industry and community leaders.

Each fellow is paired with a trained mentor who will support their progress through the program, and will partner with an area organization on an action learning project.

Each team will present “deliverables” – concrete results – during a competitive event next May, a week prior to graduation.

Leadership Fredericksburg’s faculty of six is led by Dr. David Corderman with

Academy Leadership Associates and J.R. Flatter with Flatter, Inc. Chamber President and CEO Susan Spears is the program’s executive director and a member of the faculty, along with Jeremy Pickwell with Lifepoint Church, Mike Fidgeon with MySoul, LLC, and Janel Donohue with the Rappahannock United Way. Mary Washington Healthcare is serving as the program’s title sponsor.

Stafford schools announce new appointments

The Stafford County School Board recently announced new appointments on Tuesday, Aug. 13.

John Anderson will assume the role of executive director of Facilities and Maintenance. He comes to Stafford County from Kennesaw, Ga., where for 11 years he served as the assistant vice president of facilities for Kennesaw State University. In that role he oversaw facilities services, design and construction services, planning and sustainability, environmental health and safety, enterprise risk management and central receiving and distribution, according to a news release.

He led a team of over 200 staff and implemented facilities master plans that supported enrollment growth as well as

a major consolidation with another state university. Anderson also worked for a decade as a senior architect for Georgia State University.

George Hummer has assumed the position of executive director of Special Education and Student Services. He has served as a supervisor of Student Services since 2015 and previously was the assistant principal of Rodney E. Thompson Middle School. Hummer began his teaching career in Spotsylvania County.

As supervisor of Student Services, Hummer worked with schools at all levels to support IEP, 504, SEC, and MDR meetings. He worked closely with human resources regarding staffing, particularly with the recruitment of new teachers, and

provided budget oversight for the areas under his supervision.

Teri Lewis is the new assistant principal at Edward E. Drew Middle School.

She served as secondary education specialist in Arlington County prior to assuming this role. While in Arlington, she also served as an ELA specialist, interim elementary assistant principal and supervisor of the Office of Minority Achievement. She co-founded the Summer Literacy Academy, a program that engaged a cohort of middle school boys from marginalized groups in meaningful experiences with reading and writing. More re-

cently, as secondary education specialist, she coordinated the middle school implementation of Academic Parent-Teacher Teams, a high-impact family engagement strategy that is linked to learning.

Prior to her work in Arlington, Lewis served as a tenured associate professor of secondary education at Towson University, where she was chairperson of the English education program and director of the Teacher Academy of Maryland. She began her career as an English teacher at Charlottesville High School.

Creative critter cages

Over the years we have had many small pets including rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, rats, a chinchilla, gerbils, Siberian hamsters and dwarf hamsters. Early on, I started with the modular cages. You know, those colorful plastic things you can attach tubes and accessories to.

However, these cages are not the best or safest choice for housing. The cages are lightweight, easy for other pets to push around, and the tube can be knocked apart. An industrious critter can quickly chew through the tubes. We had this happen with a couple gerbils. Luckily, we were able to catch them! The way the doors latch can cause them to loosen and pop open as wires are bent slightly to secure the door. The floor space (you do not count tubes as living areas) is too small for these animals. Finally, they are a pain to clean. After using modular cages for a short time, I decided to find better, safer ways to house my smallest pets.

My first step was to find a cage that was solidly built with more floor space.

I discovered Martin’s Cages in Pennsylvania. Martin’s ships and includes what you need to put the cages together.

They have a huge selection of cages and will do some customizing. I used rabbit carry cages and had them use 1 inch by ½ inch coated wire instead of 1 inch by 2

inch wire. If you do not want to do this, Martin’s also has cages for various small pets. When I order, I request a lifting lid as well as a front door if possible, for the kind of cage. Because Martin’s cages use springs and hooks to secure the cage to the tray, I find them more secure. From here I went to looking at tubes to attach to the insides of the cages. The key here is inside.

Critter Trail tubes have a variety of different lengths, T connectors, short sections, 90-degree turns, longer J-shaped tubes, four-way cross attachments, different running wheels and sleeping units. I purchased several different packages of tubes and accessories that would fit in the cages. My kids spent hours with tubes and cages designing things. Once you get the layout you want, use cable ties to secure the tubes inside the cage. If a critter chewed through tubes, there was no risk of escape as the tubes were confined in a secure cage. When the tubes needed to be cleaned out, we had others that we could replace them with.

What if you have dwarf hamsters or mice that could slip through many cage bars? You can still adapt larger aquariums. We used reptile climbing rocks and untreated blocks of 2-by-4 pine as supports and were able to spiral tubes for climbing. There are commercially
