New Moncure Elementary underway

housands of people and a few pets descended on Stafford Marketplace on Tuesday for the family friendly National Night Out. “Well over 7,500 people” attended the free annual event, according to Rita Kooiman, an administrative specialist for Stafford County Sheriff David Decatur. The Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office put on the gathering, which encourages communities to band together to fight crime and develop a positive, collaborative relationship with law enforcement. The three-hour event, held outside Target in the North Stafford shopping plaza off Garrisonville Road, drew more than 140 vendors, community organizations and businesses. “National Night Out was once again a huge success,” Decatur said in a released statement. “I can’t thank the community enough as well as all the volunteers, businesses, community leaders and county employees who helped make this event so special.” Lester Long, representing the North Stafford Farmers Market outside Stafford Hospital on Sundays, manned an information booth at Tuesday’s event. Long said that it is the market’s third year at National Night Out, since he and Robin Long took it over from a previous owner. He noted that the farmers market’s growth actually stemmed from attending previous National Night Out events. “It’s been a stepping stone,” Long said. Children nearby also participated in

tafford County Public Schools held an afternoon groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday for the new Anne E. Moncure Elementary School. Stafford County Public Schools’ Superintendent Bruce Benson, Moncure school officials, members of the Stafford County School Board and members of the Stafford County Board of Supervisors were in attendance. The school is located at 75 Moncure Lane in Stafford. There, contractors will begin constructing a new building in the coming weeks. The new school is expected to cost more than $29.9 million, with the the scheduled opening set for the fall of 2019. The design of the new school will support a SCPS C5W vision, which focuses on communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, citizenship and wellness, according to a SCPS press release. Advanced technology, carefullyexposed building features and personalized and collaborative spaces will thoughtfully be integrated throughout the school, according to SCPS.
