Searching for a Treatment

It was just a white box, but Matt Tovar could not wait to open it. He tore through the thick Styrofoam shell and pushed past the packing, all for a tube the size of his finger. He’d rushed to the Jepson Science Center after getting an email: “Hey Matt, your cells are here.”

He’d been waiting on them — there were a million in that one tiny tube — to continue his search for a new treatment for an aggressive and deadly brain cancer called glioblastoma.

A 2019 graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree, Tovar was first to take advantage of UMW’s early admissions agreement with George Washington University’s medical school. After graduating in May, Tovar is setting up shop in a new lab in Washington. But the tools that took him this far? They came from Jepson.

Mary Washington created “the perfect storm” for his research, said Tovar, who’ll study surgical neuro-oncology and hopes to also work as a physicianscientist finding innovative treatments for otherwise incurable diseases.

A pair of chemistry professors — Kelli Slunt and Leanna Giancarlo — were “pivotal,” he said. And the Irene Piscopo Rodgers ’59 and James Rodgers Research Endowment, which he earned two years in a row, paid for those cells he unwrapped at Jepson. Plus, it picked up the tab for conference fees, travel — he’s shared his research from Boston to Orlando, Missouri to Tennessee — materials and more.

“Matt is one of the most outstanding research students I have encountered,” Giancarlo said. “Given all his amazing achievements and activities, I’m not sure when he sleeps.”

Born in Panama, Tovar moved with his military family to the U.S. when he was 4, eventually landing in North Stafford. He saw his mother, a nurse, as a superhero when she went to work in her scrubs. The bug bit him, too, and he got jobs early on as a scribe and a tech in emergency medicine — he’s already delivered a baby. But he’s seen the flipside, as well — fatal gunshot wounds, patients turned away for lack of insurance — which has only made him work harder.

At UMW, a mistake he made during a quantum mechanics experiment gave him direction, turning him on to the link between varying sizes of minute matter called nanoparticles and the amount of energy they can produce.

From there, he created a compound that can find and kill brain cancer cells in a petri dish. And that has potential.

“Matt started his ambitious research project … as only a sophomore,” Giancarlo said of his work, which mixes biology, chemistry and physics. “When he proposed his idea … I thought optimistically that he might accomplish this goal by the end of the academic year. Matt did it in a few short weeks.”

The GW agreement doesn’t mean he’ll complete med school early, but it freed him from worrying about applications and interviews. So in his spare time, he worked on a minor in music,

studying the brain’s reactions to different chords and how that plays out in film scores.

“Speaking with Matt, you immediately sense his creativity and passion for science, medicine and music,” said Slunt, who also directs UMW’s Honors Program. “He has blazed a path that will enable other UMW Honors Scholars to follow behind and join him at GW.” Five more have already begun the process.

At George Washington, Tovar will scrub in for neurosurgeries, trading those mail-order cells for ones he’ll harvest himself from live bodies. And he’ll keep waging his war on glioblastoma.

“What motivates me most about my work is the fact that, at present, there is no cure,” Tovar said. “I want to show these patients that, yes, there is hope and promise for them.”

Emergency exercise seeks volunteers

Organizers of Capital Fortitude, a fullscale emergency exercise, are seeking volunteers to participate as actors on July 20.

The exercise will evaluate the National Capital Region’s ability to dispense medication quickly in response to an anthrax attack, according to the Virginia Health Department.

Volunteers are needed from 10 a.m. to noon to walk through a simulated medication dispensing site at Mountain View High School, 2135 Mountain View Road, Stafford. The exercise will be held in the school gymnasium.

Although no actual medications will be handed out, public health staff and volunteers will go through the same procedures and protocols that they would use to dispense medications in a real disaster. As a reward for participation, volunteers will receive a summer kit for safe and healthy

fun in the sun, according to a news release.

People of all ages, including parents with young children, people with disabilities, college students and faculty, scouts, community groups, seniors, members of faith-based communities, corporate employees and the public can register in advance.

No special training or experience is needed. Children under 16 should be accompanied by an adult. Allow about an hour and a half to participate in the exercise.

This is only an exercise; no actual disease-causing agents will be involved in any phase of this exercise. No actual medications or medical care will be provided.

the principle is pretty straightforward. A vaccine exposes us to a far weaker, often dead, version of the virus, which then prompts our body’s immune system to develop the necessary resistance. The success rate is incredible, but it’s never 100% effective. A few who take the vaccines don’t develop the immunity.

But by vaccinating at least 95% of the population, those who don’t develop the immunity are protected as well.

Many of these diseases have been around for thousands of years. There is evidence that small pox began in Neolithic era when humans first started forming villages and towns. The origins of other viral diseases are difficult to trace – mostly because medicine just didn’t know how to identify them.

It’s almost a given that no one wants us to return to the era when children died of whooping cough or succumbed to diphtheria. Or when whole communities, as recently as the 1950s, closed their theaters, their playgrounds, their pools and even their schools because they feared an outbreak of the highly contagious polio virus.

That’s how insidious these viral diseases can be, but medical science and governments have taken them on and pushed them into the shadows. The challenge is to keep up the pressure, not only to keep them out of our daily lives, but to remove them from the scene entirely. It can be done.

After almost 2½ centuries – yes, centuries -- we, as a country, have not in full measure applied these unalienable rights, without restriction, to all.

The continuing slow maturity of our country becomes very clear when you look at the slow progression of civil rights legislation.

In 1865 slavery was abolished, but those released from bondage were not guaranteed all those “unalienable rights.” As the years went by, our country had to restate the meaning of freedom by passing the Civil Rights Act GOLD

of 1866, allowing “all citizens” to make and enforce contracts and to purchase, sell or lease property. That was followed in 1868 by the 14th Amendment, providing voting rights to all “males” over 21. Then the 15th Amendment in 1870 forbade any state to deprive any citizen the right to vote because of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

The Civil Rights Act of 1875 barred discrimination in public accommodations and on public conveyances on land and water and prohibited the exclusion of African-Americans from jury duty. But this didn’t stop making African-Americans sit in the back of the bus or drink out of separate water fountains. As late as the 1960s, our government had to further clarify the civil rights of folks of color, religion, and gender.

As we have struggled with defining freedom, the Fourth of July has slowly become more a time to have fairs, picnics, cookouts, music and fireworks.

Unfortunately, it has become less of a time to recall that we are celebrating how unbelievably unique are those words: “That all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

Those words are why we have made this a special time to celebrate the

meaning of freedom. In forgetting, have we slowly allowed various people and groups to interfere with the freedom of others? Have we allowed ourselves to regress into a “them and us” mentality? Have we allowed certain shouting groups to tell us that some of us are not equal? Are we forgetting what this annual celebration is about?

Maturity can be slow. Some things, including humans, mature at different speeds. But isn’t it astounding that we have so greatly matured in medicine, technology, transportation, and many other ways but have, after almost 250 years, still not fully matured on how we treat others?

Although we haven’t fully lived up to those extraordinary words of freedom, I’m hopeful we will get there -- that promise made in 1776 is too great a concept to not mature and ripen and bear the fruits of freedom equally for everyone in future generations.

Giant Foods accounts for more than a quarter of the groceries sold in Stafford County, according to a new report by trade magazine Food World’s 2019 MidAtlantic Market Study.

The 12-month study from April 2018 to March 2019 includes most major supermarkets, pharmacies and convenience stores.

Giant’s strength in the local market may be as much about the names missing from the list, like Whole Foods, Wegman’s and Trader Joe’s. They’re missing out on a piece of more than $340 million in sales in the county, according to Food World.

Giant Foods grocery sales in Stafford in the 12-month period were $88.17million, slightly lower than the same period a year earlier.

Meanwhile, Walmart and Target both reported around $2 million in growth in their grocery sales year-over-year.

Walmart reported $50.2 million in sales and Target reported $30.1 million.

No guarantees in training dogs Ethical trainers will not guarantee their work. Some professional organizations require us not to make guarantees. There are reasons for this.

Bailey was over 100 pounds of adolescent chaos. Timmy, a boy about 10 years old, enjoyed playing roughly with the dog. They would chase and yank each other to the ground. Timmy would be bruised, and his clothing ripped. Mom allowed the games to go on because boy and dog seemed so happy. However,

after a neighbor’s child was injured, Dad decided the games must end and Bailey needed training. It was decided a trainer would be called. Dad was not happy I would not guarantee my work. One session, he began to understand.

I implemented management protocols, began manners work and taught safer games for boy and dog. Over the weeks, there was no improvement. Mom insisted they were doing the work and following what I outlined. Dad confirmed when he

was home, he made sure the rules were followed. Dad stated if I could not get the situation fixed, Bailey would have to go.

This was when their teen daughter spoke up. She said when Dad was at work, Mom allowed Timmy to play the rough games.

Dad and I were less than happy. Unless Mom and Timmy got with the program, Bailey would not improve. Though the work was being done when Dad was home, Mom was allowing it to be undone. Dad understood why I could not guarantee the work. Trainers have no control over what happens when we are not in the home.

What about gimmicks like “Perfectly trained dog in seven days” or “Two-week bootcamp and you will have a perfect pet!” There is no way any trainer can make guarantees about time frames.

There are many factors influencing how long training will take. Are you doing the homework? Are you doing the management? How long has the situation gone on? Is there a medical condition that needs to be addressed? Sometimes there are situations we cannot fully resolve. Sometimes the best option is a lifetime of management. Ultimately, no matter the quality of the work done, the dog determines the speed of progression.

I worked with a rescue foster home with a dog who was a resource guarder.

I carefully outlined a procedure to follow with instructions not to rush to the next steps. I wanted only the first couple of exercises done. No more. The first exercises were based on relaxing and easing stress while starting positive associations to humans. I would evaluate progress the next session and move forward if possible. The rescue director called a couple days later. The dog had bitten the caregiver.

The director and I talked at length about what I outlined. She called back the next day. It seemed the caregiver wanted things to move faster to get the dog adopted sooner. The dog stressed, felt threatened and bit. The director removed the dog from the foster home and took over the work.

There are only a few things trainers should guarantee. I will do the best I can within my current skills. I will strive to learn more about my craft. I will be honest with myself. I will seek the advice of other professionals when needed. I will be positive with my training and work to reduce stress and fear.

In dog training, and other animal work, there are no guarantees. All we can do is promise to do our best to help you.

From there, you and the dog determine the rest.

Marines host sunset parade U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Ronald L. Green, 18th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, hosted a Sunset Parade at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle on June 25.

The sunset parade pays tribute to those whose uncommon valor was a common virtue.

The one-hour performance featured the music of “The Commandant’s Own,” The United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps and precision drill by the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon.

Since September 1956, marching and musical units from Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C., have been paying tribute to those whose “Uncommon valor was a common virtue” by presenting the Sunset Parade in the shadow of the 32-foot high U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial, according to a news release.
