It seems to me… heroes come in all shapes, sizes, ages and sexes. Despite the news highlighting bad people that rob, attack or murder, I believe they are HARVEY GOLD greatly outnumbered by the good people in our world who should be classified as heroes. On Memorial Day, we celebrate all those heroes who have and continue to protect us from a local robber to a distant foreign enemy. They were trained to place themselves in harm’s way and when the call came they were there to perform acts of bravery. We are grateful for them and what they have done. Our hope is that heroes will always be there to rise above the crowd to unselfishly respond to a call for help or just help without even hearing the call. In the aftermath of 9/11, heroes emerged by the score. Later in Boston and other cities, and recently in Manchester, England, heroes performed acts of heroism. Unfortunately, their names often never make the news. Although they were never trained to respond heroically, how they were raised and their moral sense of decency and respect moved them to instantly aid those in need. Something in their background kept them from running away but instead doing the right thing. Recently, in Portland, Oregon, three men responded to protect two women from a man whose hate-filled life overflowed in a knife-wielding rampage. Rick Best, a 53-year-old U.S. Army veteran, Taliesin Myrddin Namkai Meche, 23, and

in a manner far beyond his maturity and in ways any 17-year-old might not have the courage to do. Ever a devoted grandson, because of her health he took her on a weeklong trip to Florida with the help of the Dream Foundation. He took her to lunch on Mother’s Day. He took her to a beauty shop to have her hair done, for prom pictures and dinner. Recognizing the significance of what Stephen was doing, businesses along the way would not charge for their services or products. Stafford High School Principal Joe Lewis brilliantly welcomed the idea of Stephen taking his grandmother, Julia Jarman, to the prom, and the school’s faculty and students supported it as well. Stephen has had his share of hardship. His father died when he was 8, but his character and training allowed him to become an athlete, respected student and, in my book, a man. I don’t think there is a gene for this. I think it comes from hero trainers and in Stephen’s case heroines; his mother, Pam Vigil, and his grandmother Julia. In the musical, South Pacific, there is the song “You Have to Be Carefully Taught” with poignant words about learning to hate. That song and its meaning are true. But, the opposite is also true. You also can be taught to love and respect. Thank you, Stephen, and all those involved in this inspiring story for teaching us that heroes not only save lives but equally important spread heroism and teach us human kindness. Bob’s commitment to preserving open space throughout the county is amazing. Having served on two state commissions, I have interacted with many state officials. Bob possesses the skills required to successfully accomplish what is best for us. He is respected for doing the work required to make informed decisions. He respects and listens to others, even if he disagrees with them. Bob is able to bring people together. Additionally, Bob is a man of immense integrity. A major issue facing the state over the past several years has been ethics. Bob is certainly the person we can rely on to uphold the finest ethical standards. There is only one choice for delegate

Voting is one of the most important aspects of our republic. In selecting whom to vote for ,many factors come into play: ideology, stands on the issues, commitment, experience and the ability to accomplish the goals, are but a few. In all these categories in the 28th House District there is one clear choice— Bob Thomas. Bob is dedicated to serving others, as a Marine, a father and for the past six years, as a supervisor. He digs deep into the issues confronting the community and into the budget. Bob looks for solutions and then forges alliances to make them a reality. He does his homework, which as an educator I can appreciate. Bob continually combines his commitment to his views, and works with others to make positive things happen. Being a businessman, he brings the knowledge of creating jobs and making a payroll to budgets, and

I admit I have wondered if, in our society that is so devoted to material things, there are less heroes and will future generations have what it takes to produce heroes. But then I heard about a young man, a junior at Stafford High School, who gives us all hope that the stuff that makes heroes is alive and well. I believe being a hero is a matter of having character and morality learned from good people. I would call this heroes-in-training and those who train them are heroes themselves and could be parents, grandparents, teachers, religious-leaders or a special role model. I am certain there are many examples of young people in Stafford who by their actions have been, are and will be heroes. Recently, a wonderful example is Stephen Vigil, who has shown the character and humanity that makes him a hero to me. He didn’t run into a burning building or stop an evil person from doing harm. He showed that being a hero doesn’t always require these actions. What Stephen Vigil has done is not a singular action but a display of a strong character that not only makes his family proud but should make us all proud that this young man lives among us in Stafford, Always a thoughtful son and grandson, Stephen learned that his 91- year-old grandmother had pancreatic cancer and did not have much time left. He didn’t hide from this unfortunate and some would say unfair circumstance. He acted

I’ve known Paul Milde for about 15 years as a friend, an elected leader and a neighbor. He has proven to be responsive to his constituents and always has the best interest of the community at heart. I’ve never heard of Bob Thomas, let alone have any knowledge of his actual accomplishments in office. I am not being negative; I’m just sticking with an established leader in our region for over 10 years who has earned my trust at every level. I’m voting for Paul Milde for the House of Delegates.

National Safety Month’s primary objective is to help keep citizens safe at home, work, and in the community. CRRL is partnering with TRIAD to focus on safety for seniors by hosting a series of workshops. TRIAD is a cooperative effort of law enforcement agencies, senior citizens and community organizations interested in the welfare of seniors, concentrating on senior safety and reducing crimes against our most vulnerable citizens. The local TRIAD serves Stafford, Spotsylvania and Fredericksburg. While the events are designed for seniors, all are welcome to attend. The events will include Frauds and Scams Against Seniors on June 8 from 2 to 3 p.m. at the England Run branch of the library. There, the Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office will present an informational session on avoiding scams and fraud. Other events include: Internet Safety for Seniors on June 13 from noon to 1:30

In memory at Quantico National Cemetery The rain forecast for Saturday morning failed to materialize and instead sunshine warmed the modest crowd at the visitorsâ€™ center for the 34th annual Memorial Day ceremony at Quantico National Cemetery. Staged by the Potomac Region Veterans Council under the chairmanship of Charles Wilson, the keynote speaker was retired Adm. John Harvey, the state secretary of Veterans and Defense Affairs. The invocation and benediction were by Navy Lt. j.g. Brian E. Burd. Quantico base commander Col. Joseph Murray made the opening remarks and cemetery director James Sanders welcomed the guests. Harvey, Murray and Sanders made the wreath presentation. Music for the occasion was by the Quantico Marine Corps Band under the direction of Gunnery Sgt. Kristofer P. Hutsell. Even during the recession in the middle to late 2000s, spending on pets remained steadfast even though Americans cut back on spending in most other discretionary income areas. So when you turn the pet away, that pet owner’s dollars go walking out the door right with them. And one thing pet lovers do is talk and spread their experiences, both positive and negative, by word of mouth and through social media. For those of you who do find some truly dog-friendly restaurants, here are some tips for good doggy dining etiquette to make it a pleasant experience for you, your dog and other diners: 1) Even though some restaurants provide water bowls for dogs, don’t assume – bring your own portable water dish and water as well. 2) It’s natural for dogs to be curious when they smell new foods, so bring along some high value food and treats for your dog as well. This will make the food on your (and others’) plate a lot less appealing. 3) Make sure your dog has been well socialized and has good manners. Any dog that is out in public should be safe for strangers of all ages. And don’t expect your dog to be the only canine there. Your dog should be not only safe with humans, but safe around other dogs too. 4) Always check with management first before assuming your dog is welcome. If your dog isn’t welcome, rather than make a big stink, politely leave – and give your

money and patronage to a dog-friendly establishment. 5) Keep your dog on leash at all times, and position him either under the table or far to the side, out of any main thoroughfares, paths and walkways. 6) Bring a rug, mat or pad for your dog to lie on. Concrete can get hot and uncomfortable for your dog, making him antsy and less likely to sit or lay still. 7) Make sure your dog has been well exercised and has relieved himself before taking him inside the seating area. The last thing you want are any accidents. 8) Bring along plenty of clean-up wipes and waste bags, and always clean up after your pet, both in and around the restaurant and parking areas. 9) Do not allow your dog to eat, drink or lick any of the restaurant dishes, and don’t allow him on the chairs or furniture. 10) Always thank the management for allowing your dog to dine with you, and tell them you will spread the word and let other pet owners know how well you and your furry friend were treated. Colonial Forge girls lacrosse returns to states » BY DAVID STEGON for InsideNoVa

Four years ago Colonial Forge High School did not have a girls lacrosse program. Now they might have the best one in the state. The Eagles improved to 19-0 Wednesday when they beat Forest Park 16-13 in the 6A South Region final and advanced to states for the second straight year. “It has taken a lot of hard work,” said coach Shavaughn Roberts. “We have a nucleus of seniors that started with us four years ago. They already knew the game and combined with some of the upper classman on previous teams laid the foundation here.” Roberts combined the talent already on the team with a recruiting effort around the school. She looked for athletic players in other sports and urged them to try lacrosse in the spring. For some, like defender Sierra Espeland, who is a goalie for the United States U-19 indoor national field hockey team, the efforts have been rewarded. Espeland has been a key part of the Colonial Forge defense, using her athleticism and smarts to support the core group of players. “Every year I would ask her to come out, and she finally did,” Roberts said. “She has just such good hand-eye coor-

dination and has just done great so far.” That core, though, is a group of six seniors who have been with the program since its inception: Anna Maupin, Keely Trail, Brigid Gavin, Micayla Starnes, Ana Doyle and Maddie Jones. Maupin, one of the team’s midfielders, was recently named the Conference 4 Player of the Year.

That leadership helped against Cosby. Colonial Forge found itself down 9 to 5 in the second half after four straight Cosby goals. A loss would have ended the season, but Colonial Forge was able to battle back. The teams were tied at 13 with less than a minute left. That is when Maupin took the ball the length of the field before finding Ali Hamlin for the winning goal.

“This is a great group of kids that are incredibly smart,” Roberts said. “We were hoping to have success this season. The first two months of the season have not been kind to the San Francisco Giants, who won three World Series during a five-year span earlier this decade. The Giants have had their fair share of injuries and their record dropped to 2231 overall after a 3-0 loss at home Monday to the Washington Nationals. The game included a brawl after Washington right fielder Bryce Harper charged the mound after he was hit by a pitch from Hunter Strickland. Harper hit two home runs against Strickland in the 2014 postseason. Giants outfielder Jarrett Parker, a graduate of Colonial Forge High and a former University of Virginia standout, was not on the active roster Monday, so he was able to steer clear of the melee. The Nationals (31-19) began their three-city West-Coast road trip with their second shutout in three days after Washington did not take part in a shutout in its first 47 games. The win by Washington on Monday came as manager Dusty Baker returned to the team after he missed three weekend games against the San Diego Padres in Washington due to his son’s high school graduation in northern California. Parker went on the disabled list in April after he injured his shoulder while chasing a fly ball in a home game with the Giants. Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reported over the weekend that Parker, a left-handed hitter, ran the bases and

made throws from the outfield before the San Francisco home game on Saturday. There is a good chance Parker could begin a minor league rehab assignment soon, according to NBC Sports Bay Area, and return to the Giants in a few weeks. Parker hit .143 in his first nine games over 21 at-bats before suffering the broken clavicle in late April. The Colonial Forge product was drafted in the second round by the Giants out of Virginia and worked his way up the minor league ladder. He spent time with Double-A Richmond in the Eastern League in 2013 and 2014 and then made his major league debut with 21 games with the Giants in 2015. Last year he spent time between the Giants and Triple-A Sacramento, the top farm team of the Giants. Parker hit .236 with the Giants in 2016 and had three doubles, one triple, five homers and 14 RBIs. “I think last year [2015] solidified everything for me. I can be an impact guy at this level and contribute,” Parker told InsideNoVa last year during an interview in the Giants’ clubhouse.

GW finished with 31 wins, the most in the past 10 years. The George Mason baseball team also ended its season May 26 in the Atlantic 10 tourney, falling 9-6 to Saint Louis. The Patriots were 26-33 overall this season. Tyler Nelin of Virginia Beach led George Mason with 10 homers this year and also hit .296 with 40 RBIs. Davidson, the No. 6 seed, won its first Atlantic 10 title with an 11-4 win over Saint Louis on Saturday. Davidson will play on Friday, June 2, at regional host North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., in the NCAA tourney. It is the first NCAA tourney appearance for the Wildcats of Davidson.

HYAMS WITH BRAVES SYSTEM Levi Hyams hit .216 in his first 15 games and 37 at-bats this season for Double-A Mississippi, a farm team of the Atlanta Braves. The left-handed hitter is primarily a first baseman but he also can also play second, short and third. Hyams was drafted out of the University of Georgia by the Braves in 2012. The Colonial Forge High graduate began his season a few weeks late, in early May, after he joined the active roster of Mississippi. “I was on the roster but just wasn’t active,” Hyams said in May. “I was just waitEDUCATION

WORKSHOP SET FOR OWNERS OF RESIDENTIAL WATER WELLS The Southeast Rural Community Assistance Project will hold a private wellowner workshop 5 to 7 p.m., June 8 at the Stafford County Cooperative Extension, 1739 Jefferson Davis Highway. Well owners are often unaware of potential causes of contamination to their water. Older wells may not be sealed properly near the surface or their source of water may be shallow and influenced by pollutant sources like feedlots, septic systems and other land uses. Private wells are unregulated under the Safe Water Drinking Act and it is the well owner’s responsibility to ensure the water is safe to drink. The workshop will cover well construction, maintenance, local regulations, wa-
