Phone scam targets residents The Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office is warning local residents of a phone scam with callers claiming to be local law enforcement.

A resident reported receiving a voicemail April 29 from someone claiming to be a Stafford deputy, SCSO spokesperson Amanda Vicinanzo said.

The scammer told the victim that she had two pending charges and needed to purchase gift cards totaling $1,000 to pay for court costs.

Neither the Sheriff ’s Office nor any law enforcement agency will ever call asking for money, and Vicinanzo said that any-

one who demands payment by gift card is a scammer.

The victim in this case informed her husband of the voicemail and he reported his suspicions to the Sheriff ’s Office.

Vicinanzo noted that caller ID sometimes shows the name and phone number of a legitimate police agency, even if it is a scammer. And the scammer may even identify themselves as a deputy or police officer who is currently employed at the agency.

Those who believe they may be a victim of a scam are asked to immediately report their suspicions to the Sheriff ’s Office at 540-658-4400.

Woman charged with robbery A Stafford woman is accused of trying to rob a motel, according to the Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office.

Amanda Lee Shuck, 29, was charged with robbery and providing false identification AMANDA SHUCK to law enforcement, SCSO spokesperson Amanda Vicinanzo said.

An employee at the Aquia Best Western, 2868 Jefferson Davis Highway, told deputies that Shuck had entered the motel lobby around 11:39 p.m. May 1.

Shuck asked to use the restroom and the employee left the desk momentarily to get a key. When he returned, he reportedly found Shuck standing on a chair and attempting to climb over the front desk.

She allegedly told the employee she was robbing the business, Vicinanzo said.

“The employee attempted to stop the subject, but she shoved him and quickly absconded with the register,” she said.

She fled to an area at the back of the motel where she emptied some of the cash from the register into her clothing and purse. When the employee tried to grab her, she allegedly attempted to bite him.

A witness called 911 and Shuck was taken into custody.

The Marine Corps Marathon Organization has added a new event to the Aug. 24 lineup: a new Quantico Mile preceding the Quantico 12K at the Officer Candidate School located on Marine Corps Base Quantico.

The new race is expected to encourage runners of all ages and abilities to participate, according to a news release.

The morning begins on the banks of the Potomac River when athletes start

the Quantico Tri. Registration for all three events is now open at www.marinemaration. com.

The Quantico Tri registration fee is $78, and there are 675 available entries.

All athletes who cross the finish line earn impressive finisher medals.

The Quantico 12K and Mile will host a combined 1,000 entries. The 12K finishers receive a medal. The 12K costs $47 and the Mile is $20.

All three events offer technical shirts and are qualifiers for the Distinguished Participant medal. This limited release medal can be earned by running in Marine Corps Marathon events in May, June, August and November. In 2018, only 300 medals were distributed.

The Quantico Tri includes a 750-meter swim in the open water of the Potomac, 19.2K bike ride and 5K run.

Virginians are urged to know flood risks With the Mid-Atlantic hurricane season approaching June 1, Virginians should take time now to find out their flood risk and make sure they’re covered with flood insurance, according to a news release.

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation encourages people to visit www.dcr.virginia.gov/floodaware-

ness for information and links to resources such as the Virginia Flood Risk Information System and the National Flood Insurance Program.

Flooding is the most common and costly natural disaster, but only 3% of Virginians have flood insurance.

“Anywhere it can rain, it can flood,” DCR Director Clyde E. Cristman said.

“One inch of water in a home can cost more than $27,000 to repair. Few Virginians could afford to pay that out of pocket.

With flood insurance, you can recover more quickly and more fully.”

Officials note that flooding occurs in moderate- to low-risk areas as well as in high-risk areas, and in all regions of the state.

Stafford lost a Sheriff ’s Deputy in 1980 during a domestic dispute call.

Or it’s stopping that car on Route One at two in the morning. Approaching the vehicle entirely alone, flashlight in hand, knowing that something isn’t quite right.

Other times, it’s a county sheriff ’s deputy responding to an accident scene that’s so grim, and so upsetting, that they simply can’t talk about it. But most of all, its being that force for good that protects the community, comes to our assistance in times of trouble, and is ready and available 24 hours a day.

National Police Week starts May 13.

It’s a national recognition of the work of law enforcement and their contribution to our communities. It’s celebratory, but it’s also solemn. It remembers those 21,000 young men and women who gave their lives protecting and helping others.

School division hosting student film festival Stafford County Public Schools will host the Fifth Annual Stafford County Film Festival at Colonial Forge High School, 550 Courthouse Road, from 6-9 p.m. May 10-11.

The festival showcases student-made films on the big screen, according to a news release.

Middle and high school students create and submit original films for the festival, and this year’s feature is “Soul Reaper.”

Past festival entries are accredited by

the industry standard, IMDB, and are available to watch on Amazon Prime.

Students participating in film-making learn 21st century skills that include writing, acting, editing, directing, cinematography and may also include cosmetology art, set design and sound engineering, the release noted.

Changes are coming to the runway at Stafford Regional Airport.

The runway, which currently measures 5,000 square feet, will expand by 1,000 square feet by October 2020, according to airport manager Edward Wallis.

Once completed, planes will be able to make longer trips from the 18-yearold airport when the expansion, he said.

“We’ll be able to go nonstop to California, nonstop overseas,” Wallis said.

The expansion doesn’t mean that larger aircraft will be taking off at the facility — larger planes typically need at least 8,000 feet of runway. Instead, this will mean planes of the size that currently use the airport will be able to carry more than currently allowed, Wallis said.

“Aircraft that use our facility now will be able to leave fully loaded with passengers and fuel,” he said.

LANDING THE DEAL The expansion itself is more than 10 years in the making, with work beginning on the effort back in 2007 when the Airport Authority made the request to the FAA.

“If you’re going to fly commercial, you’ve got to drive to the airport. You’re sitting on the plane with a bunch of other people,” he added. “You really can’t have conversations, a business meeting.”

In business aviation, whoever is using the aircraft “is diving straight out to the airport, boards the aircraft and he is done,” Wallis said. “He’s not waiting on the plane, the plane is waiting on him.”

Stafford Regional also plays an important role in commercial aviation, he said.

“We take corporate aircraft out of the Baltimore-Dulles-National-Richmond airspace,” he said. “We relieve pressure on those airports.”

The airport is one of the county’s undiscovered gems and hosts numerous community and social events throughout the year, Wallis said.

“People who’ve lived in Stafford for 12 or 18 years say they didn’t know this airport was here,” he said.

After losing seven senior starters to graduation after last season, North Stafford girls’ soccer coach Joanne Szymanski admitted being concerned at the beginning of this season, not knowing what to expect since the Wolverines would be fielding a team with a talented corps of juniors, including their top scorer the past two seasons, junior Ava Baugh, along with several underclassmen.

But the early returns have been favorable. North Stafford tied defending Group 5A state runner-up Mountain View 2-2.

After a scoreless first half, Szymanski said the Wolverines were feeling very good.

Szymanski herself was very pleased that after Mountain View took a 2-0 lead, her young team did not quit. They scored two goals late in the game, including one in the waning seconds to salvage the tie.

“I think the team realizes it can play with anybody and so that was an important game from a confidence standpoint,” Szymanski said.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of the school demographics and district boundaries, Symanski said the team’s depth has always been an issue, and that is also the case this year. But while the team has experienced some growing pains (including a loss to Massaponax), the group has begun to gel together. One of the pleasant developments, Szymanski said, has been the defense, led by junior goalie Alexis Gress, along with two junior captains Aliyah Hunter and Cheyenne Downs.

One of the team’s strengths this year, in contrast to recent seasons, is the fact the scoring load is more evenly distributed, and offense is more prominent in general, according to Szymanski. Perhaps the biggest reason for that is a new junior player, Makayla Johnson, has emerged and is helping with ball distribution and goal scoring.

“The past two years we pretty much would stop and watch Ava [Baugh] and that would be our offense,” Szymanyyski said. “But obviously your offense is easy to shut down when the other team can mark your top scorer. So we needed some offensive [diversity] this season, and I am pleased that we have gotten it.”

Another of the top newcomers is sophomore Hailey Smith, who has seen time on defense, but lately has played well and figured prominently offensively at center midfield. Szymanski said the thing she is most gratified with is the team’s ability to stay mentally focused while learning to come together as a unit.

“We always play with a lot of heart, but soccer is a game that is mainly in your head, so I have been pretty pleased that the girls have not quit when they get down to a good team,” Szymanski said.

“There have been a few inconsistencies that come with being a young team, including playing up against good competition and playing down against a team that maybe is not as talented. But overall, I am pleased with how the season has gone so far.”

Stafford Latter-day Saints host ‘Greatest Show’ prom The Greatest Show was in Stafford on May 4 when the Stafford Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints hosted the regional Latter-day Saint prom at the church at 20 Boscobel Road, according to a news release.

The interior of the building, except for the chapel, underwent a three-day transformation and was nearly unrecognizable when it was transformed into a virtual circus.

This year’s theme, The Greatest Show, was based on the movie, “The Greatest Showman.” Games and activities included a bowling alley, karaoke room and a prize booth. The main event converted the gymnasium into an elegant big top.

Silhouettes of trapeze artists hung from the ceiling and a floor show included ball-

room dancers, stilt walkers, “fire” baton twirling and musical numbers.

More than 100 volunteers contributed time and effort into making the event a success. “It was so worth it,” said Bradley M. Sant, the president of the Stafford Stake. “We wanted to give the youth a safe and wholesome place to have a prom experience with like-minded teens. The event exceeded everyone’s expectations.”

The location rotates among the six stakes, or areas, which work together to create the Latter-day Saints prom each year. The more than 300 participants came from as far away as Fairfax County.

Other counties served by the event were Prince William, Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, and Culpeper, as well as the city of Fredericksburg.

I get so many robocalls, my phone goes into call waiting. They literally will ring on top of each other. Many days I want to throw my cell phone in the driveway and run over it with my car about 50 times.

My caller ID is filled with unknown numbers that appear local, from all over the U.S., Canada and China. I’ve even had caller IDs that aren’t phone numbers but 3, 4, or 5 digits.

Why has this gotten so bad so quick?

The stone age of cell phones, the 1990s, was when many of the telemarketing rules were written on who could call and for what reason. The rules were relatively specific to landlines. And over time they expanded to cell phones and pagers for emergency service professions, hospitals and nursing homes. The rules allowed non-marketing robocalls for political and charity fundraising but that was the extent. While the basic rules for robocalls seem straight forward, the legal interpretations are full of loopholes. But simply put, no automated or pre-recorded messages and no fake names.

In the early 2000 s’ cell phones were becoming adopted more mainstream and telemarketing call centers figured out how to make calls appear from a local area code regardless of where it originated from. Even this practice was banned in 2009 with the Truth in Caller ID Act. But as we know, the practice rages on.

The penalties for those that break the FCC or FTC rules for robocalls are relatively unenforced. It its very hard to identify the offenders and very hard to collect the fines when they are identified. As of 2018, the FTC has issued $1.5 billion in fines for violations and has only collected $122 million. The FCC has issued over $200 million in fines and has yet to collect a single dollar.

The tools are more advanced now allowing individuals or small teams of people to make millions of calls. The most public case I have come across is Adrian Abramovic, dubbed the Robocall King,

by Alex Palmer of Wired Magazine. He is facing a $120 million fine from the FCC for allegedly making 97 million robocalls.

This was done with some simple software, buying bulk personal data, and as much bandwidth he could afford to automate the dialing.

Tips to cut down on unwanted calls: The first step is ensuring you are registered with the FTC’s Do Not Call List registry. For companies that follow the law, this will reduce those types of unwanted calls. Check with your cell carrier on any free tools not activated yet on your account. Verizon has a free service named Call Filter, but also a more advanced service for $2.99 per month.

AT&T has two services called Call Protect and Smart Limits. T-Mobile and Sprint have similar services thru their apps.

There are also a variety of paid thirdparty services that have monthly fees associated. Some of the more well know programs include: Nomorobo, Hiya Caller ID, RoboKiller and Truecaller. Be aware that pricing and availability will vary based on the brand and model of the cell phone you carry.

I personally recommend paying for additional identity privacy protection services for certain items you buy that require you to give your phone number or email. Registering a new website domain is a prime example. By adding the privacy for an additional $7.99, I don’t get slammed with spam email or phone calls.

The times I have forgotten to check the privacy add-on box, my phone rings nonstop for weeks.

Government registry websites are notorious for having their websites scrapped for contact data by automatic bots. My business is registered with state and local contractor websites. Every time I update information on those platforms the robocalls come in bunches. It takes days for the unwanted calls to calm down. I guess it’s the cost of doing business.

The full-time position, based out of our Woodbridge office, will be responsible for producing our award-winning Prince William weekly newspaper, along with designing advertisements and working on other projects as assigned. The part-time position will work two days a week at our Belvoir location, with the remainder of the time flexible based on need. Both positions require a demonstrated expertise with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, experience designing and paginating newspapers, and an ability to produce impactful graphics and advertisements. InsideNoVa, Northern Virginia’s leading news source, is seeking a full-time reporter to staff its contracted military weekly newspaper, the Belvoir Eagle.

Working under the direction of the public affairs office at Fort Belvoir, this reporter will cover events and write news and feature stories about the activities and people at a major U.S. Army installation with nearly 50,000 employees. The ideal candidate will have at least a year of journalism experience (college newspaper experience can qualify) with a portfolio that shows the ability to cover a variety of stories and to develop original story ideas. Photography skills are also necessary. A military background or an understanding of military culture is preferred, along with an ability to interact professionally and comfortably with top military leaders.

The selected candidate must be able to pass a background check to have access to the base, but security clearances are not required. This is a full-time position based at Fort Belvoir; remote work will not be considered. The company offers medical and dental insurance & paid time off.
