Coen declares his candidacy for supervisor

nterim Supervisor Tom Coen has declared his candidacy for a seat on the Stafford County Board of Supervisors. Coen, who represents the George Washington District, plans to run as an independent. Coen was unanimously appointed interim supervisor on the board in February. He was one of seven applicants until the board narrowed the search down to three THOMAS C. COEN to interview. “I am proud of the work we have done in the time I have been on the board,” Coen said. “We established a policy to manage growth, putting it where the county wants it to be and importantly, preserving the rural areas from development. We have brought school safety to the forefront, resulting in a task force created by the sheriff, which has already started addressing the concerns raised by others and myself.” Coen’s seat was vacated by Supervisor Bob Thomas, who is now a 28th District legislator to the Virginia House of Delegates. A special election in November will be held for the George Washington District seat to determine who will represent

tafford’s County administrator, Thomas Foley, announced at a Stafford County Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday that the board hired a new leader in economic development. John P. Holden is the new economic development director and will start in his new position May 21,

Foley said. Holden, who hails from Maine, has more than 20 years of experience in economic and business development. He was selected after a national search of applicants from 11 states. Foley said that one of the key requirements for the position is the ability to create and foster relationships through networking and collaboration. “This is one of the most valuable strengths that John brings to Stafford County,” Foley said. “He has extensive experience with all aspects of economic development, making him ideal for the position. We look forward to his leadership in establishing

a clear direction for the future.” Supervisors’ Chair Meg Bohmke, R-Falmouth, said that the goal is to draw a diverse range of businesses to Stafford to expand job opportunities for residents, as well as expand the county’s business base. Rick Cobert served as interim director for the county’s economic development until his departure last year. “Stafford County has seen significant economic growth over the last decade and has more great things on the horizon, including the development of downtown Stafford,” REINS
