Superintendent to leave Stafford schools after four years » BY TRACY BELL

tafford County Public Schools’ Superintendent Bruce Benson has accepted a new position and will head to North Carolina’s Alamance County this summer. According to a report on Monday in the Burlington (North Carolina) Times News, Benson accepted a job from the Alamance-Burlington schools system and will start his new position in July. On Tuesday at a Stafford County School Board meeting, Benson publicly announced his resignation and acknowledged having mixed emotions.
“Anybody that thinks that this is not hard for me, you are wrong. I feel very connected to this board, to this community, to teachers and students across the schools,” he said. “It’s one of the things I’ve loved.” Benson said he is thankful for having the opportunity to serve the Stafford community for the past four years and appreciates the support of the board, staff and community. Benson is replacing a retiring superintendent in North Carolina, where he’ll lead a slightly smaller schools system than SCPS’s nearly 29,000-student population. He said he’s looking forward to new challenges, but
the continued success of Stafford’s schools remains important to him, with “significant work to be done in the coming months” and a goal of tying up any loose ends. SCHOOLS » PAGE 3 SUBSCRIBE TODAY

Man charged with stealing car, tools in Stafford A man wanted in Stafford County for stealing $60,000 worth of tools and a vehicle was arrested recently in New York, according to Amanda Vicinanzo, spokeswoman for the Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office. Harry Herman Lamb, 53, was charged in Stafford with grand larceny and petit larceny. In New York, he was charged with possession of stolen property, eluding and several other offenses. On March 2, sheriff ’s office Deputy Randall Pinkard responded to a call about
the theft of tools from a locked box at Fredericksburg Public Auto Auction on Warrenton Road in south Stafford. The victim told the deputy that Lamb had been sleeping in the room connected to the garage where the tools were stolen. In examining the tool box, the deputy saw that it had been pried open. The victim said that $60,000 worth of tools had HARRY LAMB
been stolen, Vicinanzo said. Stafford Detective Timothy Covington later learned from New York State Police that Lamb had been arrested after fleeing from police and crashing the vehicle he was driving. Stafford Deputy Justin Forman discovered that the vehicle Lamb crashed had been stolen from the auto auction. The victim told the deputy that Lamb
Puppy, gift card scams are on the rise
Attorney General Mark Herring warns Virginians about a variety of phone and online scams. He said he was particularly concerned about scams involving a puppy and one with an iTunes gift card. The puppy scam involves an online breeder and a puppy that doesn’t exist. Consumers often pay hundreds of dollars for a puppy after seeing a photo. They are asked to pay costs such as transportation insurance. Red flags for this scam include stock photos, exotic or designer breeds offered at significant discounts and poorly constructed websites that include misspellings and grammatical errors, according to Herring’s office. The iTunes gift card scam is a new twist
on an old fraud. Scammers will call pretending to be a utility company, a government agency or even the IRS or law enforcement and demand payment via an iTunes gift card or another prepaid card to resolve some fabricated issue or debt. No legitimate company will demand payment via an iTunes card or a prepaid card, according to the release. “The best advice I can give Virginians is to trust your instincts, remember that nobody gives anything away for free and that if it seems too good to be true, it probably is,” said Herring in a statement. “Scammers and con artists are getting more sophisticated every day, using technology and mining social media to make
themselves seem legitimate. That’s why you always have to have your guard up, especially when someone is asking you to send money or pay something up front. That’s a dead giveaway that they’re trying to scam you.” Other ongoing scams include grandparent, tech support, IRS, sweepstakes and imposter scams. In the grandparent or relative scam, someone calls or emails the victim posing as a relative in some sort of distress or as someone calling on behalf of the relative such as a law enforcement agent, lawyer or other official. They are asked to wire funds. Tech-support scams include the use of pop-up messages, fake websites or even
had access to the dealer tags and keys when he was staying at the business, Vicinanzo said. No tools were recovered from the vehicle, but Lamb later confessed that he stole the tools and the vehicle from the auto auction. He also said that he sold the tools at truck stops along the way to New York, according to Vicinanzo. Lamb was incarcerated at Madison County Jail in Wampsville, New York, following his arrest. phone calls to offer free security scans that can install malware and steal your identity. Scammers might also diagnose a non-existent problem with a person’s computer requiring a payment for repair. The scammers may claim to be from a well-known technology company and try to intimidate victims with technical jargon. In IRS scams, con artists will contact victims claiming to be with the IRS to collect payments. They will also seek to gain personal or financial information. To make things worse, the scammers often have technology that masks their caller ID information and emails may appear official with government seals and logos. Lottery and sweepstakes scams can also fool people when a caller tells a victim that he or she has won a contest but needs to pay a fee to collect the winnings.

ville) was equally adamant that an investment in mental health professionals and counselors made more sense. Also, not a single member of the Stafford County Board of Supervisors supports the notion of arming teachers. There is one more statistic to add to this discussion and it has to do with the availability of what have become progressively more lethal firearms. Back in 1994 Congress passed an assault weapons ban. Defining an assault weapon is challenging, but it comes down to military style, semiautomatic weapons with relatively large magazines. In other words, not your typical .30-06 bolt action hunting rifle. Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush both endorsed the bill. It passed, but lapsed after 10 years. The almost immediate impact, when the restriction lifted, was that mass killers had access to far more lethal weapons than they did in 1999. What’s happened since is that the number of incidents and their respective death tolls have gone up. I think they call that cause and effect. Where does it stop? More social workers, more counselors, can help. Maybe we can stop these situations before they start. The same can be said of security. Metal detectors if need be and clear back packs. But reducing the number of military style semiautomatics is an absolute necessity. As for arming teachers, all I can say is, Mr. President, Mr. Stewart, that’s just nuts. Try to help solve the problem and not make it worse. David Kerr, a former member of the Stafford County School Board, is an instructor in political science at VCU and can be reached at StaffordNews@insidenova.com. A gun ended his life and brought about some change, but lawmakers have not provided lasting solutions to provide life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all our citizens. Sure, we have made changes but poverty, intolerance and inequality still linger, and voices have been raised again regarding intolerance. Is it possible? Had our lawmakers understood what they needed to do to respond to those signs so that we would not be seeing protest marches about civil rights again in 2019? The question is, did they even understand what the problem is and what needs to be done? In December 1964, 25,000 people participated in an anti-war protest march on Washington and raised their signs against the war in Vietnam. I think it safe to say lawmakers did not hear those voices because that war lasted years and nearly tore our country apart. In 1970, signs were raised on campuses across the U.S. and the signs were clear that environmenGOLD tal pollution was harming our PAGE 6 planet, and the voices asked the

lawmakers to do something. Lawmakers did respond with a host of new laws to create a healthier environment and created the EPA to make it happen. However, despite the laws and oversight, pollution not only has continued but spread to our oceans, air and even outer space. Now, we are embroiled in controversy again, and our concern has spread to climate change and global warming. The voices have always been clear. And, while solutions are often not easy, it is critical that the problem is fully understood to have lasting solutions. Partial or token remedies are not solutions and often create continued divisiveness and discontent. What better example of the lack of problem solving is England’s failure to listen to the signs raised in the Colonies and France’s ignoring the signs leading to the French Revolution. The history of the world is littered with trampled signs and unanswered or incomplete solutions. Today, the voices are calling out again and the signs are clear that the youth of our country and adults as well want our lawmakers to solve the problems that lead to gun violence. They need to be reminded that they ran for office to represent all the people, young and old, rich and poor, all colors and beliefs, and not just one faction. The signs are clear. It must be done because, once again, it is causing divisiveness. We hope the lawmakers are listening! Harvey Gold is a contributing writer at InsideNoVa. Reach him at StaffordNews@ insidenova.com.
TO THE EDITOR Clean air, water more important than campaign contributions
After seeing an article on offshore drilling, I did some looking into the positions of our local Republican congressman, Rob Wittman, on environmental issues. I can only conclude that the interests of the energy sector override the environment—unless the Chesapeake Bay is directly involved. We need someone in Congress who truly believes that clean air and water for everyone is more important than campaign contributions. Given the fact that he has spent “two decades as a shellfish specialist monitoring water quality and environmental health issues” I expected to see a record that reflects a strong commitment to environmental protection. However, he rejects the scientific consensus that human activity is responsible for global climate change and voted to prohibit studies looking at the economic impacts (positive or negative) of climate change. Further, he voted to reduce EPA’s budget by $1.9 billion, against funding to clean up lead contaminated water supplies in Flint, Michigan, supported increased energy company participation in writing regulations, and is in favor of allowing drilling off the coast of Hampton Roads. On the other hand, he consistently supports the EPA’s ability to protect the Chesapeake Bay. Is this how he shows his “commit-
ment to the principle that our country’s environment should be safeguarded for future generations” as stated on his website? Why does his commitment end at the shores of the Chesapeake? Has he totally forgotten his scientific training and commitments? Could it be because the energy sector has contributed over $150K to his campaign since 2010? John Dileo Stafford
Gun control measures do not come with guarantees
Sad to say, the United States has a culture of and for violence ... gun violence, domestic violence, political violence, etc. It now also has a culture running scared. Gun violence happens to be in the spotlight at the moment. One of your readers writes: “We should take a look at what our elected officials are doing to keep the citizens safe and how they feel about limiting the ability of people with psychological issues to purchase weapons.” He accuses Rep. Rob Wittman of “caring more about pleasing the gun lobby and ideological purity than common sense safety measures.” That can be taken as a harsh and volatile partisan accusation. The accusation stems from Wittman’s co-sponsorship of one bill and his vote on another that prevents the Social
Security Administration and the Veterans Administration from releasing their lists of benefit recipients deemed to be incapable of handling their benefits responsibly. Would it be unreasonable to ask gun control zealots to provide the number of these unfortunate individuals who they suspect are out there purchasing guns? Gun violence is the final action resulting from a condition or other cause that preceded it. Gun control is pointless if preceding conditions and causes are given a free pass in the violence issue. Additional gun control legislation thereby becomes nothing but a placebo. And now, as has been the case in previous mass shooting incidents, we enter the theatrics phase, with mass protest marches, calls for “tighter,” unspecified gun controls, questioning of the scope and need of the Second Amendment, continuing vilification of the NRA and a trial that will be a prolonged, frenzied media event. Compliant legislators will vote millions to “secure schools etc. In the end, in this instance, the shooter will achieve additional notoriety and some mental defective copy-cat--unlikely a SSA or VA benefit recipient--may make a try at achieving the same notoriety. Gun control measures do not come with guarantees. Jerome C. Burchard Gainesville

It’s only natural to be a little protective of your petite pooch, but dogs are very perceptive and can sense when we’re uneasy. If your pup sees that you’re OK with bigger dogs, chances are he’ll be OK with them too. 4) Form a partnership/give him a job: Most dogs, even the tiniest ones, were bred to assist man or perform some type of job or duty. Training your dog to perform certain duties or allowing him to participate in dog sports and activities will not only build his confidence but will give him a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Remember your little dog is a dog, not a tiny human. Garrett Reams comfortable on the move » BY HUGH RIST
FOR INSIDENOVA
Sometimes the road less traveled isn’t necessarily the best road. Such is the case for Mountain View senior center fielder Garrett Reams, who has moved several times in his life because of his father’s career in the Navy and played baseball at two other high schools, Western Branch and Nansemond-Suffolk, before coming to Mountain View last season as a junior. Reams figures to play a key role for the Wildcats, not only in terms of stability in the outfield, but in terms of leadership; and he sees his ability to adapt to new situations quickly as a strength that enabled him to mesh with his new teammates. “Because of my father’s [Matthew] career in the Navy, I got used to being comfortable no matter where I was,” Reams said. “Because I’ve lived just about all over Virginia when I came to Mountain View, even though it was hard because I didn’t know anyone, I tried not to be nervous. “It was easy [to fit in] because of the way coach [Craig] Lopez runs his program, and because all the other guys are just good dudes and we like the same things. We are really close now.” Reams also pitches, but he says playing anywhere in the outfield is where he is most comfortable, and where he is likely to make his mark at the next level. Although he has been accepted at Virginia Commonwealth and Old Dominion
Mountain View senior Garrett Reams is hopeful a good season will attract interest from four-year college baseball programs. DAVID FAWCETT/INSIDENOVA
as a student who plans to major in business management or marketing, he has not received an offer for baseball. But Reams said he is hoping that he can leverage a strong season with the Wildcats into a college offer. “College is definitely an important consideration, and one of my former coaches at Suffolk, who coaches at a junior college in Virginia, said I am welcome to play there. But I really am hoping to use what I do this season, as well as the contacts all of my high school coaches
have, to get some help with college and be able to play baseball. I don’t think I would walk on if I didn’t get any help,” Reams said. For now, Reams said, a more important consideration is helping Mountain View succeed, and he believes the Wildcats are talented and united enough to be conference contenders despite getting off to a slow start “because of some jitters.” “The guys all buy in to what coach Lopez is trying to get us to do. There’s a lot of talent and we are all really close on and
off the field. So I would say winning our conference is something we are looking to do and is a possibility,” Reams said. Being a part of a successful team at Mountain View would be gratifying for two reasons. First, Reams attended the Mountain ViewJames River Group 5A state title game in 2016, won by the Wildcats, because he was living in the area and he played against many of the James River players in travel tournaments. “I saw what Mountain View was able to do, and I was excited to be a part of it when I got here,” Reams said. Secondly, Reams has an appetite for winning because just after he left Western Branch, where he played in his freshman year, the team won a Group 6A title. Reams’ love for the game was cultivated when he began playing organized baseball in earnest around age 11 for an Amateur Athletic Union team called the Tidewater Drillers, which saw him play tournaments in places such as Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Cooperstown, N.Y. Until last summer, Reams played with another travel team, the Old Dominion Hitters, and he also has played a few American Legion games during his high school career. He said he prefers playing high school ball because it’s more team-oriented. “Playing high school baseball is a lot of fun. When you play in showcase games, you really just want to have a good outing yourself --even if your team’s not winning --and make sure you impress the people who are watching. But high school [baseball] is more of a team game, and that makes it more enjoyable.”

Hamilton runs impressive 40 time at Penn State’s Pro Day » BY DAVID FAWCETT
Dfawcett@insidenova.com
Mountain View graduate DaeSean Hamilton knew his speed concerned NFL teams. On March 20 at Penn State’s Pro Day, Hamilton continued to put those doubts to rest when, according to the school’s numbers, he ran a 4.52 40 in front of representatives from all 32 NFL teams. Hamilton said various scouts also timed him between a 4.47 and 4.51.
Hamilton, who is the Nittany Lions’ alltime leading receiver, did not run in the 40 at the NFL Combine. Hamilton also did well in the passcatching portion of pro day. Last Tuesday’s performance follows other impressive outings as Hamilton prepares for the April 26-28 NFL Draft. He received rave reviews at the East-West Shrine Game and the Senior Bowl. ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. ranks Hamilton on his latest 2018 NFL top 10

AUTOS WANTED Michael Nickles and his two brothers again are playing on one team at Division III Randolph-Macon in Ashland. SUBMITTED
Randolph-Macon baseball aided by three brothers » BY DAVID DRIVER
FOR INSIDENOVA
The three Nickles brothers all played baseball together at Colonial Forge High School. But it looked like that would not happen at the college level, especially after Shawn Nickles went to a junior college in Maryland last season as a freshman. Meanwhile, Michael Nickles and Matthew Nickles were freshman last season at Division III Randolph-Macon in Ashland. “Shawn went to college and I figured he would be there all four years,” Michael Nickles said. Shawn Nickles went to Marshall in West Virginia and then went to Harford Community College, which has had a strong baseball program north of Baltimore. But then this season Shawn came to Randolph-Macon, where he is a sophomore outfielder. “This is his first year at RandolphMacon. We played three years together in high school,” said Michael Nickles, a sophomore third baseman. “Honestly I never thought we would get to play together until I found out he was coming here. We are all so competitive with each other. Last year I was a backup; that was my role. This year I have started at third base.” The Yellow Jackets were 13-3 overall and 5-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference going into games this week. Randolph-Macon was hitting .308 as a team in its first 16 games with 23 homers and a team slugging average of .504. Michael Nickles was hitting .283 with three home runs in his first 15 games this season. Matthew Nickles, a sophomore righthanded pitcher and twin brother to Michael, had an ERA of 3.52 with a record of 0-0.
“This year he was coming out of the bullpen,” Michael said of his twin brother. “Our parents come to a lot of games if they can get around work and stuff.” It was not a sure thing that all three brothers would end up at the same school. “I looked at Mary Washington because they were close to home. I started leaning toward Randolph-Macon because I thought it was a great program,” he said. “We each looked at different schools. But at the end we wanted to go to the same schools.” Michael Nickles played four years of baseball at Colonial Forge High and helped the team win a district title in 2013. He was an all-conference player as a sophomore, junior and senior and as a junior gained regional and state honors. Nickles feels that two of the teams to beat in the ODAC are Shenandoah and Washington & Lee. “I definitely think we are a team to beat,” he said. “Our conference has a lot of good teams.” Another Stafford product with the Yellow Jackets is senior outfielder Cole Migliorini, a former Colonial Forge standout. He was the ODAC player of the year last season and was hitting .367 with five homers going into this week. “He has gotten a lot better since high school,” Matthew Nickles said. “It is just awesome to see how guys like him can develop.” The three brothers are the sons of Brian and Kathy Nickles. Their father played baseball at West Springfield High. Matthew Nickles is studying biology and Shawn is interested in communications. The Randolph-Macon brothers have two other brothers, for a total of five. David Driver can be reached at StaffordNews@insidenova.com.

the early 1990s, as it expanded to take on an increasing array of interior hardware in large multi-family residential communities. Today, the company provides more than 15 full-time jobs and employs dozens of subcontractors at various job sites. “We essentially take these units from being blank boxes to functional spaces where people can live and work,” Milde said. “We’ve come a long way from building closets, and it was time for a new name that more accurately reflects who we are.”
