he Colonial Forge Eagles made the absolute best of their first appearance in a state championship game. The girls high school basketball team (25-6) won the Virginia High School League’s 6A tournament on March 11 at the Siegel Center in Richmond with a 52-38 victory over the Oakton Cougars in the title game. “It was a great win,” said Colonial Forge senior starting forward Olivia
Gaither, who had eight points and two steals. “We came out and gave it our best and worked together and we got the win.” Colonial Forge never trailed as they built quick 5-0 and 8-2 leads, behind the first-quarter scoring of senior guard Camille Downs. She scored all 14 of her team’s first-quarter points, nine on three three-pointers, as the Eagles led 14-10 at period’s end. The Eagles were ahead 25-20 at halftime, 41-28 after three periods and were comfortably in front the rest of
the way. “We came out ready to roll,” Colonial Forge coach Lashaun Cook said. “Oakton is a great team and we knew we had to get out early on them, use our athleticism, run the floor and get in the passing lanes on defense. If you let them hang around, they will knock down every shot.” Cook thought a key to the win was the way her team pressured the Oakton players as soon as they crossed halfcourt. “We saw that every team that plays them allows them to set up and get into their halfcourt offense BEST and get the shots they PAGE 12 want,” Cook said. “We

ormer Stafford County Supervisor Susan Stimpson is throwing her hat in the ring for the Republican nomination for the House of Delegates’ District 28th, due to Speaker Bill Howell’s retirement. The 28th House of Delegates District is comprised of portions of Stafford County and the city of Fredericksburg. Stimpson said in an email to friends and supporters March 14, that she has long sought to be a voice for the peo- SUSAN STIMPSON ple and stands on Republican principles. Stimpson said it’s important to elect conservative leaders in state government and there seems to be a shortage of that in Virginia. The primary will take place in Virginia on June 13. Stimpson, who faced an arrest due to a bizarre incident related to trespassing at a shopping center and another incident in at an airport, since blamed her troubles on a reaction to prescription diet pills. She said since then that it’s like the song, “I get knocked down but I get up again!” “I’m much stronger and grateful for the empathy I now have for those who have faced the same struggles,” Stimpson said. Also in the running for the Republican nomination is Stafford County supervisor’ chair Paul Milde, who announced his candidacy earlier this year. Stimpson served on the Stafford County board of Supervisors from 2010 to 2014, including as chairman of the board. She also ran unsuccessfully against Howell in the Republican primary two years ago. Howell got 78.04 percent of the votes, and Stimpson got 21.96 percent during that race.
