P
rince William County School Board Chairman Ryan Sawyers is dropping his bid for Congress. Sawyers announced Feb. 27 that he suspended his campaign for the Democratic nomination in the race to unseat Rep. Rob Wittman, R-1st District, for “personal and professional reasons” in a statement. “I want to say thank everyone who took an active role in volunteering on our progressive campaign,” Sawyers wrote. “I want to thank all of the people who supported my candidacy; including the Democratic committees and progressive activist groups who hosted candidate forums and shared meals with our team. I want to thank the people of Virginia’s 1st Congressional District for being so hospitable to my family and I during our long road trips. Finally, I want to thank my friends and family for being by my side during every step of this journey.” Sawyers didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment, but on Twitter he did urge his supporters to “put your time, energy, AND MONEY into the candidate you feel is best qualified to take our seat back in November and then join forces the day after the primary.” Sawyers’ exit leaves three Democrats in the primary contest: Edwin Santana of Stafford County, John Suddarth of Mechanicsville and Vangie Williams of King George County.
Kim Wyman holds on to an American flag and a banner protesting the Confederate flag being flown on private property along Interstate 95 in Stafford County. She and Bill Johnson-Miles, left, were joined by several other protesters Tuesday evening in an attempt to speak before the Stafford County Board of Zoning Appeals against flying the Confederate flag. Their case was dismissed as the board ruled it did not have jurisdiction since the protesters did not have standing. For more, visit InsideNoVa.com/Stafford ALEKS DOLZENKO/INSIDENOVA

tudents’ safety was the top priority at a Stafford County School Board meeting Tuesday. Students, parents and school board members spoke openly about improving safety in the school division for students and staff, in the wake of a Valentine’s Day mass school shooting in Parkland, Florida, as well as local school-safety incidences that put the community on edge. Stafford County Public Schools’ Superintendent Bruce Benson said that safety is always a top priority in the schools. He spoke about better securing SCPS facilities and the school-community effort it will take, in partnership with law enforcement.
Benson said that SCPS is already ahead of many schools in Virginia when it comes to security. He spoke of its secure vestibules, a system that requires being buzzed into buildings after keycard checks as well as panic buttons and radios in schools that can contact 911. He also spoke of a necessary partnership with students in reporting things to adults that just don’t seem right. “It is really important that we take care of each other and we each have a responsibility in doing that,” Benson said. “…There are always things we can do to enhance security and that’s part of the dialogue we’ll have in the coming weeks. He noted that at the top of his wish list would be to have a full-time deputy in each of the SCPS schools. Benson also said that he would be part of
a meeting with the Stafford County School Board and Stafford County Board of Supervisors’ chair and vice chair, about security in the schools. But despite the declaration, one parent at the meeting questioned how secure local schools could be if on a recent visit to her daughter’s school after the buses left, she was able to be buzzed in without a check of her identification, she told the board. She said that her son, who asked to use the bathroom, was quickly directed to it and not checked either. She told the board that staff members need training on how to follow safety rules without exception, checking everyone’s ID who attempts to enter the buildings. SCHOOLS » PAGE 2
