irginia House Speaker William Howell, R-28th District, plans to retire at the end of this term, he announced Monday. Howell, who’s represented Virginina House speaker to retire the Stafford Countyarea seat for the last 25 years, will depart the House as the secondlongest serving speaker in Virginia WILLIAM HOWELL history after holding the post for 15 years. “While I obviously will miss all of you and while I will always look back with only fondness at every day I served here, I have decided that I will not be seeking re-election to the House,” Howell told his fellow lawmakers in prepared remarks. “You are valuable parts of something much bigger than any one of us. So, it is easier for me to make this announcement now and to leave next year knowing that this institution will continue to thrive.” The 74-year-old leads a formidable 66-34 Republican majority in the House. He is perhaps best known for a shepherding two pieces of major transportation legislation through the General RETIRE Assembly: a $6 billion PAGE 13 f u n d i ng bi l l w it h

Milde. “What I offer the people of Stafford and Fredericksburg is representation with the experience and energy to hit the ground running. I will be as focused, as diligent and as relentless on behalf of our region in Richmond as I have been on the board of supervisors for the last 12 years.” Milde also promised to continue the principled conservative representation that’s been expected from Howell.
