Mob faces assault charges Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office deputies arrested four suspects for attempting to break into a residence using an ax on Feb. 8, according to sheriff ’s office spokesperson Amanda Vicinanzo. A caller reported that she had been assaulted and several individuals were outside her house on the 500 block of Eskimo Hill Road. She said they had threatened to burn down the house. Upon arrival, Deputy Aubrecht and Sgt. Reed saw three females and a male standing near a vehicle. The officers also saw an ax near the front door, which had numerous dents

and scuff marks on it. One of the women became belligerent and the officers smelled alcohol on her. She was identified as Taylor House, 21, of Stafford. She told deputies the group came to the residence over an alleged theft. Aubrecht then talked with Tina Lara, 52, of Stafford, and detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from Lara. She told the deputy that she, Taylor Kennaugh, 25, of Fredericksburg, and Dakota Lara-Bayliss, 22, of Stafford, had driven to the house to confront the victim about an alleged theft.

All four were taken into custody. The victim told Aubrecht that she had received several texts from Lara-Bayliss stating that a group of individuals was coming to her residence. The victim told officers that she was standing on her front porch when the group arrived, and Lara and House assaulted her, prompting her to go inside the residence and lock the door, Vicinanzo said. The four then tried to get into the residence using an ax. She heard some from the group repeatedly state that they would burn the house down. The four suspects were taken to the Magistrate’s Office, and Kennaugh was released on an unsecured bond. The other three suspects were incarcerated at Rappahannock Regional Jail. But then the racists met their match. Her name was Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It’s hard to overestimate what a powerful force she was in her time. The first lady visited Tuskegee in 1942 and, in typical Mrs. Roosevelt fashion, went on a flight with one of the Tuskegee pilots. When she was told they weren’t being assigned to combat operations, she was incensed. On her return to Washington, she asked the head of the Army Air Corps, Gen. Henry Arnold, why these men weren’t flying in combat? Arnold quickly ordered the formation of a new colored squadron. The 99th Pursuit Squadron deployed in 1943. Thus began an aviation legend. Some 450 pilots in the unit would fight in North Africa, the Mediterranean and Europe. They were, as is the case with most fighter pilots, aggressive and at times fearless. In escorting bomber missions, they took on a distinction few units could match. None of the bombers they escorted were shot down by enemy fighters. Known by the brightly painted vertical stabilizers on their aircraft, they dubbed themselves, the “red tails.” The bombers they escorted, manned by whites, gave them another name, the “red-tailed angels.” David Kerr, a former member of the Stafford County School Board, is an instructor in political science at VCU and can be reached at StaffordNews@insidenova.com.

ing to the benefit of those in power. With gerrymandering, we are more subtle. We do it with words shaped into laws. Both major political parties are guilty of this process that takes place behind closed doors and is then voted upon by those who will benefit by it. We allow gerrymandering to “pack” or “stack” a district. When we “pack” it, we enlarge the district to dilute the voting power of the other side by bringing them into a larger group that has opposing views. By “stacking” we draw the district lines to reduce the opposition, leaving a majority whose views control the way things are done. This subtlety results in the further shaping of new laws or retaining old ones that continue to deny others what they need and want. It invades our religions, schools, employment and housing. Unfortunately, whoever is in power and able to gerrymander keeps the process going. Problems are not solved, they just change sides. Doing away with gerryGOLD mandering will help. Sullivan named North Stafford’s new head football coach HUGH RIST » BY FOR INSIDENOVA

When longtime North Stafford football coach Joe Mangano stepped down in January after 11 seasons, one of his key assistants and assistant head coach this past season, Neil Sullivan, was a natural choice to be named interim head coach and oversee the Wolverines’ off-season conditioning program among other things. So it might not be too surprising to anyone that Sullivan, 30, who has taught English at the school for the past three years after initially coaching at Madison in Fairfax for six seasons, was announced Feb. 12 as the team’s new head coach as the interim tag was officially removed. Sullivan, who also served as defensive coordinator last season, said it was thought that one day he might be able to take over the program, so Mangano beGOLD

gan preparing him for the position over the past few seasons. “He was a great mentor for me, and I am grateful to him for all he did to help me,” Sullivan said. “Because I’ve been around NEIL SULLIVAN and the rest of the coaching staff will remain intact, I think the transition will happen seamlessly.” Although North Stafford, which advanced to the state 5D Class 5 semifinals last season, lost two of its standout players in Devyn Ford and Chase McGowan to graduation, Sullivan said there is plenty of talent returning, including quarterback Jamir Boyd and

two-way standouts Javon Swinton and Shawn Asbury. “We have some dynamic talent returning, and all the guys we have are great character guys. In addition, the coaching staff is very professional. Football is really important to them, so I’m really excited to see what next season will bring.” Sullivan said the support he has received from the administration and the members of North Nation makes his appointment that much more gratifying. “The whole environment at North [Stafford] is conducive to success from administration to students to fans. I can’t say enough about the way they support our athletic department,” Sullivan said. When asked what his biggest challenge might be, Sullivan was quick to answer. “There were not as many players in the lower levels of the program, so reaching

out to the middle schools and trying to build interest in the program is something I look forward to doing,” Sullivan said. Mangano cited health concerns combined with the demands of the job as the primary reasons behind his decision. The Wolverines went 85-48 during Mangano’s tenure. Sullivan played high school football at Riverbend and in college at RandolphMacon.

and they will have a voice that is listened to and heard. Sadly, those in charge of dealing with gerrymandering in the commonwealth and around the country have been raised to accept the concept of winner-take-all. The rare willingness to compromise has become even rarer, if not gone. Divisions have grown wider and the different issues that divided us have increased. This only makes it more difficult to solve

the various issues because it seems like someone’s ox gets gored. When that phone call asked me to support anti-gerrymandering legislation, it opened my mind to how important this issue is. Because if we don’t start by having fairness in elections, there will always be those who are left behind or denied the rights and privileges that the more powerful keep for themselves. While eliminating gerrymandering is

a move in the right direction, it will take strong, impartial leadership to make it work. And that, dear reader, in today’s political arena and climate is like finding the elusive needle in a haystack. But we must start someplace, and perhaps ending gerrymandering is a good place. Stafford native part of ‘Silent Service’ at Pearl Harbor ERICA R. GARDNER » BY Navy Office of Community Outreach

PEARL HARBOR – A Stafford County native and 2008 Colonial Forge High School graduate is serving at the U.S. Naval Submarine Training Center Pacific in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Lt. William Love has served for seven years and works as a Navy submarine officer within the U.S. Pacific Fleet area of operations. It is the world’s largest fleet command, encompassing 100 million square miles, nearly half the Earth’s surface, from Antarctica to the Arctic Circle and from the West Coast of the U.S. into the Indian Ocean. As a Navy submarine officer, Love is responsible for carrying out the operations of the submarine. They drive the ship on the surface and submerged to ensure safe operations of the submarine and to carry out any missions to ensure undersea domain. Love credits success in the Navy to

many of the lessons learned in Stafford. “A strong work ethic has been vital in helping me complete the training required to qualify as a submarine officer and learn the skills that are needed to carry out the responsibilities I have been tasked WILLIAM LOVE with,” Love said. Serving in the Navy is a continuing tradition of military service for Love, who has military ties with family members who have previously served. Love is honored to carry on that family tradition. “My father served in the U.S. Marine Corps for over 20 years and instilled in me the importance of service and protecting this great republic,” said Love. “I believe I will continue the legacy my fa-

ther started.” Though there are many ways for sailors to earn distinction in their command, community and career, Love is most proud of temporarily serving as the ship’s engineer for an underway while the engineer was on paternity leave. “I was responsible for half the personnel on the ship and ensuring safe nuclear reactor operations,” said Love. “I was able to accomplish the mission of the ship’s engineer and performed well.” A key element of the Navy the nation needs is tied to the fact that America is a maritime nation, according to Navy officials, and that the nation’s prosperity is tied to the ability to operate freely on the world’s oceans. More than 70 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered by water; 80 percent of the world’s population lives close to a coast; and 90 percent of all global trade by volume travels by sea. Attack submarines are designed to hunt down and destroy enemy submarines and

surface ships; strike targets ashore with cruise missiles; carry and deliver Navy SEALs; carry out intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions; and engage in mine warfare. Their primary tactical advantage is stealth, operating undetected under the sea for long periods of time. Sailors learn engineering and tactical team training during their courses of instruction required to serve aboard submarines using the most advanced technology. Training is tailored to each ship’s specific needs to develop the skills and expertise required to support operations around the world in war and peace. Virginia’s 75-day spring wildfire season began Feb. 15. The law prohibits burning before 4 p.m. each day until April 30, if the fire is within 300 feet of woodland, brushland or fields containing dry grass or other flammable materials, according to a news release.

Burning is allowed between 4 p.m. and midnight under state law, but counties and cities may have additional restrictions and residents should check with local officials before burning. According to Virginia Department of Forestry records, 95 percent of all wildfires in Vir-

ginia are human-caused and more than half are caused by people burning trash and yard debris. The Virginia 4 p.m. law has existed since 1950 and has proven to be of great value in reducing the risk of wildfires, according to a news release. This is due to the fact that wind speeds tend to decrease after 4

p.m. while humidity levels typically increase; therefore, the chance of fire escaping someone’s control is radically reduced. Violating the law is a Class 3 misdemeanor with up to a $500 fine and the cost of suppressing the fire, as well as damage caused to property.

UMW students bring class act to community theater LISA CHINN MARVASHTI » BY UNIVERSITY OF MARY WASHINGTON

It was a wiggly, jiggly sea of limbs in a downtown Fredericksburg studio. Awash in the white-hot glow of theater lights, boys and girls waved their arms and legs in the air before dissolving into laughter. “How does that feel?” asked University of Mary Washington theater major Victoria Fortune, who spent a recent Saturday afternoon teaching budding thespians about the concepts of potency, radiancy and buoyancy – types of body-movement energy. “You can use a lot of this to help with your movements onstage.” UMW students like Fortune have

teamed up with others to teach Stage Door Youth Workshops, a series of sessions for area children interested in acting. Drawing on skills they learned in their own college courses, Mary Washington theater majors impart techniques in movement, monologue and storytelling. UMW psychology professor Miriam Liss — who has children Emily, 10, and Daniel, 12, both budding actors — has long been involved with Stage Door Productions. When she joined the community theater group’s board of directors and took the helm of its youth division last year, she had an idea. Inspired by UMW President Troy Paino’s emphasis on the importance of exposing Mary Washington students to impactful learning experiences, the workshops paired Liss’ newfound board leadership

with her role on a university committee tasked with increasing community engagement. The workshops, which started in January and run through March, have Mary Washington students teaching sessions on movement, monologue, scene work, improvisation, audition skills, stage combat, scene study and Shakespeare. One of the young students, Alice Sweeney, a 7-year-old from Stafford County, first became involved with Stage Door in the summer of 2017 through the Fredericksburg Parks and Rec summer camp for Creative Drama, said her mother, Hannah. “She found that she loved performing and being on stage,” she said. Alice was cast in the Stage Door youth musical, “Singing in the Rain” in the fall of 2018, and when the musical ended in December the Ferry Farm Elementary student was clamoring for more opportunities. “Through a partnership with UMW students on Saturdays they have classes on Movement for Actors, Improvisation, Storytelling and more. She has loved it,” Sweeney said. “The workshops have given her new skills, built her confidence, helped her public speaking, and she has formed some great relationships with kids and adults that share her love of the stage.” During her recent Saturday session, Fortune, who is assisting a professor this semester in the UMW course Voice and Body Movement, showed children ways of portraying diverse characters, from a grumpy old man to a bubbly young girl. She had them use the movement techniques she’d taught them to act out tasks familiar in their own daily lives — making a sandwich, feeding fish, playing violin. “You can be anyone you want to be, and that’s really exciting,” said Liss’ daughter, Emily Kilmartin, who hopes to continue her involvement in community theater as an adult, along with brother Daniel. Fortune hopes the workshops will help children develop confidence, creativity and a range of social and

Amazon camp to help build future engineers ong before Arlington and Alexandria welcome the first of 25,000 employees at Amazon’s new HQ2, students in Woodbridge will be getting hands-on training this summer for the jobs of the future, with support from the new Amazon Future Engineer program. Amazon announced the nationwide program last fall, noting that the Bureau of Labor Statistics projected that by 2020 there will be 1.4 million job openings related to computer science and only 400,000 computer science graduates with the right skills to fill the slots, according to a news release. And, despite opportunities for higher salaries, the majority of public elementary and high schools, particularly in less-advantaged communities, do not offer computer science classes. “Among black and Hispanic students, those who take AP computer science in high school are up to 8 times more likely to take computer science in college; and among women, they are 10 times more likely to do so — yet most high schools

eral efforts to inspire kids to explore computer science, including coding camps, online lessons, Amazon-funded AP courses and student scholarships. Amazon Future Engineer is funding camp scholarships this summer at NVCC Woodbridge through a partnership with Code.org and Coding with Kids. Designed by experts, these camps will let underprivileged students discover

the potential of coding in an interactive, hands-on way. Children and young people who participate in these activities are more likely to say they like computer science and have confidence in their computer science abilities, according to the release. Students and parents can apply for summer camp scholarships, and those looking to sponsor students can make donations at codingwithkids.org/amazon. “This program from Amazon will play an important role in helping make computer science education — and high paying jobs — a reality for female and underrepresented, minority students,” said Hadi Partovi, Code.org founder and CEO. “Computer science education and skills have become essential across all industries today. It’s critical that students from all backgrounds have access to the classes that set them up to succeed and the resources to continue their studies.” Weekly summer programs, available from July 8-Aug. 2 at NVCC Woodbridge, 2645 College Drive, include “Little Coders,” “Minecraft Modding,” “Scratch Game Development,” “Roblox: Code and Publish Games,” “Robotics for Little Coders” and “Python Game Development.” Camps are also available at Amazon’s Herndon campus at 13200 Woodland Park Road.

State offers three-week lessons in environmental stewardship f a student is looking for an opportunity outside of the traditional summer camp, the Virginia State Parks system is taking applications for the 2019 Youth Conservation Corps program. The three-week program lets teens ages 14-17 live in a state park while performing restoration and construction projects. Work generally takes place in the daytime, with environmental education and adventure opportunities in the evenings and weekends. “Participants work hard, sometimes in difficult conditions, including deep mud, heat and mosquitoes, and flies,” according to the Department of Conservation and Recreation website. At the end of the program, crew members receive a $500 stipend, and the program can also count toward community service hours. The first session runs from June 23 through July 13, and the second is from July 21 through Aug. 10. Projects can include: • Restoration and preservation of wetlands, stream banks, endangered species and other wildlife habitats • Foliage restoration, water quality

Except for cameras, all electronic devices are prohibited during the program to minimize distractions. Young people with a strong background in environmental education are encouraged to apply, but those who have never experienced a park setting are welcome as well, according to the site. Puzzles & Horoscopes Need to double check? Find the answers on page 14 CROSSWORD THEME: THE OSCARS ACROSS

HOROSCOPES ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) The Moon’s return to a fun, playful, romantic and creatively charged part of your chart today is an outlier, in that there is no planetary activity here, yet this is more than just an ordinary visit. Playful and romantically charged lunar vibes should have to fight for your attention, especially with busy developments on the professional front and other areas of your life. TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) There could be some competition for your attention, but a lack of urgency allows you to focus on what you need to. As Venus and Saturn align in an adventurous part of your chart, this gives your bucket list or a desire for adventure, travel, learning and discovery some serious backing. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) Chiron’s departure from your career sector and the Sun’s preparation for his departure from an adventurous part of your chart. While they don’t appear to have much in common, it is the Sun’s return to your career sector that will take over from where Chiron leaves off. This allows you to focus on the professional housekeeping that will clear the way for the Sun’s return. CANCER (June 22-July 22) There is a lot of different forces all vying for your attention. Fortunately, there is no competition or tension as a result. They are far enough apart not to avoid getting in each other’s way. This allows the Sun to keep the solar spotlight on your financial situation and money matters, while the Moon creates the potential for unexpected developments across the income, work and career fronts. LEO (July 23-Aug 22) There’s a real opportunity to gain a deeper and more authentic look at both your own and your relationship needs. During the Sun’s time in your relationship sector, the solar spotlight is on your relationships, with the aim being to give you an authentic new starting point. Four weeks ago the Sun and Moon clashed. This time they won’t and without the fog of war, both your personal and relationship needs are clearer to see. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) Look beyond simply having the solar spotlight on your work situation, job matters and options, looking at where and how you are investing your time across the board. This is also a chance to take an objective look at your health needs, especially when it comes to balancing life’s demands and your body’s need for time to repair and to recharge itself. LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) As the Moon leaves your career sector, this

12

wraps up a visit that has two very different implications, both of them equally important. On the one hand, this will ensure your professional instincts and imagination are fuelled ahead of the Sun’s return to your work sector. The Moon also ruffled some feathers on the home front, bringing some blunt work/life balance reminders. Yet with life about to become a lot busier, the timing couldn’t be better. SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) There are some shifts and changes between playful and busy forces that not only make a balance between work and play important but suggest there is a slide towards busier times. The Moon leaves an adventurous part of your chart and returns to your career sector, but Chiron returns to your work sector. This does kick off an auspicious and potentially serendipitous few days across the income, work and career fronts, but there is no danger of life becoming all work and no play. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Venus and Saturn align in your income sector, for just the second time in three decades. Mars has returned to fire things up on the job front, just as it becomes clear that on the income front, you have the power to move mountains if you have to. This means that playful and adventurous forces don’t need to be pushed aside. CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20) Venus has returned to give your heart a voice and she aligns with the force that gives you the power to move mountains if you have to. Venus has no impulse control, wants what she sees and wants it now. Saturn has determination and tenacity, allowing you to capture what your heart is telling you and turn it into a goal that you can work towards. If you want something, you are unlikely to give up on it. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) With Venus still days away from even returning to Aquarius, your heart hasn’t even begun to look at what you want from this new solar year. This is giving you time to explore your options, with the Sun’s last full day in Aquarius a chance to get an authentic sense of your personal truth moving forward. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) That Chiron should leave Pisces during this time of your old solar year couldn’t be more perfect. With your birthday month and new solar year, this is a chance to bring both your old solar year to a close and a chapter that has kept you linked to the past. This is a day for closing old doors, at a time when new doors are already opening. WWW.HOROSCOPEASTROLOGYTAROT.COM
