he Stafford County Board of Supervisors selected Thomas C. Coen as its interim George Washington District supervisor on Wednesday, when he was also sworn in. Coen was one of seven applicants. He and two others--Anthony “Tony” DeTora and Gordon Silver-were interviewed for the job Wednesday. The seat was vacated THOMAS C. COEN by Supervisor Robert “Bob” Thomas, Jr., who is now a delegate in the Virginia House of Delegates. Coen will serve as interim supervisor until the board holds a special election in November to fill the remainder of the George Washington District term. The winner of the special election will be sworn in after the election. “After much discussion and interviews with the three most qualified candidates, we have decided to appoint Tom Coen,” said supervisors’ Chairwoman Meg Bohmke, R-Falmouth. The decision was based on Coen’s experience with Stafford County on its planning commission and other boards, and commissions as well as with the schools, where he is a U.S. government teacher at Colonial Forge High School, she said. Bohmke said that Cohen has “demonstrated a dedication to the community and an understanding of our challenges and goals.”

The petition, with just under 1,200

signatures as of Monday, asks Mosaic Realty Partners and the Stafford County Board of Supervisors to take action. A portion of the petition states: “Stafford residents are disgusted by the dilapidated condition of the Aquia Towne Center, which has not been developed in over 10 years… .” It goes on to note that garbage and rubble litter the plaza, making the area look poor and depressed. Also the petition states that it is impossible to attract new residents due to the

damage done to neighboring home values. Mosaic, of Baltimore, Maryland, purchased the 25-acre plaza for $6.15 million in June 2015, but the plaza has struggled for a decade. RamcoGershenson, the previous owner, tore down the shopping center in 2005 with plans to revitalize the plaza, but that didn’t happen. Eron Sodie, who represents Mosaic, said Tuesday that a setback BOARD
