tafford County Republican Bob Thomas was sworn in Wednesday to represent the 28th District in Virginia House of Delegates, leaving the GOP with a slim majority in the General Assembly’s lower chamber after weeks of recounts and legal challenges by Democrats hoping to end the GOP’s grip on power. A federal appeals court denied a legal challenge seeking to bar Thomas from
taking office as the newest representative of the 28th District, just hours before lawmakers reconvened Jan. 10, ensuring that the GOP would hold onto a key member of its 51-49 majority in the chamber. But Democrats are holding out hope of cutting into that majority. The legal challenge in the 28th District could still continue, even with the appeals court letting Thomas take his seat. Led by plaintiffs Kenneth and D.D. Lecky, the voters are appealing a Jan. 5
ruling by a federal district court judge who decided that election administration errors in the Stafford County race weren’t egregious enough to warrant the court’s intervention. A recount confirmed Thomas as the winner by 73 votes over Democrat Josh Cole, but that proceeding did nothing to resolve concerns that at least 147 voters in the Fredericksburg area received the wrong ballot on Election Day, prompting the DISTRICT
upervisor Meg Bohmke was unanimously voted chairwoman of the Stafford County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday after being nominated by fellow board member Wendy Maurer. Bohmke, a Republican, represents the Falmouth District on the board. “I just want to thank my colleagues,” Bohmke said. “I apMEG BOHMKE preciate the confidence that you have in me to lead the county. I look forward to working with all of you. We have a lot of challenges on our plate in 2018 and a lot of great opportunities as well. I think we’re going to have a great year and I thank you for your support.” Supervisor Gary Snellings, R-Hartwood, was unanimously voted vice-chairman of the board after fellow Supervisor Bob Thomas, R-George Washington, nominated him. Thomas, who is leaving the board this week, was also recognized for his service to the board over the past six years. “We are really going to miss your leadership on the board,” Bohmke told Thomas, pointing out that Thomas previously served in the U.S. Marine Corps and later started his own business, Capriccio Software, Inc. She further commented on his steady, calm demeanor and approach. “He’s kind of like the heart surgeon that SUPERVISOR
