closed. Geyer said in an email that being a part of the construction of the World Trade Center towers “will always be a source of pride.” “Hundreds of citizens in Prince William County had a hand in cutting, assembling, welding, drilling and delivering major steel components of those massive structures,” Geyer wrote.

forced to close after losing a decade-long legal battle with Bethlehem Steel. Atlas borrowed millions from Bethlehem in the 1980s, but had trouble making its payments. Bethlehem foreclosed on Atlas’s 54acre plant in late 1997. At its peak in the 1970s, the Atlas plant had about 650 workers and was one of the county’s largest employers. But its numbers had shrunk to about 50 when the plant

ome to more than 100 shops and restaurants, Virginia Gateway is now a major retail hub in western Prince William County. But before there was a Target, a BJ’s Warehouse or a multiplex Regal Cinema, the area near Wellington and Linton Hall roads in Gainesville was home to one of the largest steel fabricating plants in the Washington area: Atlas Machine & Iron Works. Virginia Gateway pays homage to the hundreds of men and women who worked at the steel factory during its 40 years in Gainesville with its “Atlas Walk,” which features a unique granite-sphere fountain. Atlas had a part in the construction of countless buildings and road projects, including control towers at Dulles International Airport, the FBI headquarters, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and numerous bridges. During the early 1970s, Atlas also played a big part in the construction of the World
Trade Center. When plans for the World Trade Center complex were unveiled in the late 1960s, planners contracted with companies across the nation to provide steel and other materials for the $525 million project. Atlas had the job of fashioning the bulky “box columns” used at the bases of both buildings, said Dick Geyer, who worked for Atlas for more than two decades, eventually rising to become its general manager. The job took about two years. The huge columns were massive, weighing about 78 tons each. They were also complicated. They were connected by unique bow-tieshaped “spandrels” and then branched into three smaller columns, dubbed “tuning forks,” that extended toward each tower’s upper floors. “They did the things that were difficult to do,” Geyer said of Atlas’s niche. “They took on challenging projects and did them quite well.” The company shipped the steel columns to New York via western Prince William’s railroad, a spur of which ran just behind the Gainesville plant, Geyer said. When the World Trade Center towers opened in 1973, they were the largest skyscrapers in the world, at about 1,360 feet each. Altas operated its Gainesville plant from the early 1960s until 1998, when it was

at that time. But because the ship was floating off-shore, it was technically located in the state of Maryland, which allowed the gambling boat to operate legally. Political pressure, however, led to the revocation of the gambling license in 1958 and the boat was forced to close, according to “The History of the Prince William County Waterfront,” by Debrarae Karnes. The owners of Freestone Point tried unsuccessfully to operate the site as family resort thereafter. In 1978, the site was purchased by a combination of state, federal and private funds and converted to the Leesylvania State Park.

he Leesylvania area along the Potomac River in Woodbridge was acquired in 1957 by developer J. Carl Hill, who envisioned creating “Freestone Point,” the Washington area’s first luxury vacation and recreation resort there. Hill drew up plans that included a beach, a two-mile boardwalk, a 600room hotel, a yacht club, an 18-hole golf course, an amusement park and a floating casino. But only the beach, some amusement rides and the casino materialized. The ship S.S. Freestone was moored at the pier from 1957 to 1958 and featured liquor “by the drink” and gambling, both of which were illegal in Virginia

THEN AND NOW The first major battle of the Civil War, now known as the First Battle of Bull Run or First Manassas, was fought on July 21, 1861. Interpreters at the Manassas National Battlefield Park created this “then and now” photo, the original taken on June 7, 1865, just eight weeks after the Confederacy surrendered. Soldiers from Pennsylvania created the sandstone obelisk monument to the “Patriots of ‘61” who fought at Henry Hill. MANASSAS NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD PARK

PORT OF DUMFRIES The town of Dumfries was chartered in 1749. Its port would have been located behind what is now the Dumfries Town Hall along the Quantico Creek. For about 15 years it was a thriving tobacco port that rivaled those in New York City, Philadelphia and Boston. Historians offer several factors to its demise: the Revolutionary War, erosion and siltation from tobacco farming and a shift in trade from tobacco to sugar and wheat. SUBMITTED

n 1797, George Washington bought two stills and started making whiskey at Mount Vernon – a venture that turned out to be liquid gold. His spirits were so popular, America’s first president constructed an even larger operation -- with five copper pot stills -and began large-scale whiskey production. By 1799, Washington had produced 11,000 gallons, making his the largest whiskey distillery in America at the time. The centuries haven’t changed Northern Virginia’s love of good spirits. Small craft brewing outlets are booming business these days, bubbling up about $625 million in annual revenue in Virginia alone, according to the Virginia Craft Brewers Guild. Craft distilleries, too, are an emerging trend, one that Gov. Terry McAuliffe has touted as a way to promote Virginia’s agricultural sector, even in urban areas. The commonwealth is home to more than 260 wineries and cideries, 100 craft breweries and 20 craft distilleries, some of those right in Prince William and Manassas. “Virginia is quickly emerging as the preeminent craft beverage player on the East Coast,” Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Todd Haymore said at the grand opening of a distillery in Newport News this summer. “These entrepreneurial ventures are creating jobs, generating revenue and helping the governor’s overall efforts to build the new Virginia economy.” Earlier this month, the much-anticipated KO Distillery opened in Manassas -- a first for the city -- to a big crowd eager to try its whiskey and gin. KO Distilling owners Bill Karlson and John O’Mara describe their business as an “artisan distillery” and plan to make and sell bourbon, rye whiskey, corn whiskey, gin, vodka and rum. The business also features a visitors’ center and offers tours, tastings, merchandise sales and space for special events. For more, visit kodistilling. com and facebook.com/KODistilling. In western Prince William, the longdormant Thomasson Barn made news this month when it was announced it would soon become the home of 2 Silos Brewery, a farm-to-pint “destination brewery,” where hops will be grown, brewed and enjoyed onsite, perhaps while patrons kick back to live music or play a few rounds of bocce ball. For those not familiar with the concept, destination breweries are the beer equivalent to wineries, where grapes are grown and wine is made. The barn’s new owner, Marcus Silva of Clifton, hopes to break ground in March and have the brewing facility and beer garden complete by November 2016. The barn renovation, bistro and restaurant is hoped to be finished in May 2017.

griculture has been a major part of Prince William’s economy since Colonial days. But as the county’s population has grown, farms have had to become smaller and more specialized to survive. TrueFarms in Haymarket is a good example. The farm is just 11 acres, but it turns out a whopping 30,000 heads of organic lettuce a month, which is sell to 35 local restaurants and dozens of Giant and Whole Foods supermarkets year-round. TrueFarms grows its lettuce not in the ground, but in a half-acre, computerized greenhouse that uses western Prince William spring water and tightly controlled humidity and temperature monitoring to optimize growing conditions. Hydroponic farming is a second career for owners Tom and Debbie Truesdale, who launched TrueFarms on Waterfall Road in 2010. The two are empty-nesters who left corporate careers to farm full-time after first experimenting with a homemade hydroponic setup in the sunroom of their Reston home. “The bright lights at night made our neighbors suspicious, but after receiving fresh lettuce they all calmed down,” Tom Truesdale quips on the farm’s website. The Truesdales say they saw a need for clean, fresh, environmentally friendly lettuce in Northern Virginia. The couple now lives in Dominion Valley to be closer to their farm. Tom Truesdale says high-quality water is critical to their success. The couple chose their Haymarket lot not for the land, but for the water, which they had tested before buying the property. The farm’s well taps into area springs located between their farm and Bull Run Mountain. The area’s red-clay soil offers a natural filter that results in water that’s not only exceptionally clean but also nutrientrich. “The great taste of our lettuce, it’s all because of the water in the springs,” he said, noting that the water makes their argula lettuce, a peppery-tasting variety, especially spicy. “It makes all the difference in the taste of lettuce.” The farm’s hydroponic system recycles most of the water it uses to feed the plants. As such, the crops use only 1/20th

of the water needed to grow the same amount of crops through traditional means. The Truesdale’s state-ofthe-art greenhouse keeps the temperature stable no matter what is happening outside. Wet walls and fans keep the plants cool in the summer. Propane heaters keep them “warm enough” in the winter, Truesdale says. Sensors hooked up to a monitoring computer adjust the various environmental factors for ideal lettuce production. The greenhouse is a barrier to insects of all kinds, but the Truesdales also employ beneficial lady bugs to help protect their crops. The lettuce takes about 30 days to mature. Colin Wolfe was killed in Iraq in 2006 by a roadside bomb that exploded under the Humvee he was riding in. He decided Sept. 11, 2001, at the age of 14, he wanted to become a Marine. Amy Wolfe’s one-act ballet about her son’s life was performed in March 2013. Before, during and after the 2013 performance, the theater received emails, phone calls and messages from people and

news organizations around the world. Fox News, NPR, Czech News, BBC and many local news agencies wanted to interview Amy Wolfe. As a result, the one-act ballet was invited to perform in Culpeper and California. Due to the overwhelming reaction, she said she almost immediately decided to turn it into a fulllength ballet that was performed in.com the days before Veteran’s Day in 2014. Every SeasonAmy Wolfe danced the role of Meet Yourherself. NeedsWhile difficult, it made the ballet that much more powerful, and again received rave reviews and media attention. While “Colin” is not scheduled to be performed during the theatre’s 2015-2016 season, it is far from forgotten. “We are working on touring the ballet into D.C,” Wolfe said. “We are talking to people, trying to figure out which theater and how to make it happen.” Wolfe said they have received a grant toward the project. “But, it’s still in the baby works,” she said. Wolfe would like it performed at a large theater since she wants to include a full orchestra. “If it happens, I’ll be more than thrilled,” she said. “And, yes I plan on dancing Amy if we can make it happen.”
