In the Thomas/Cole race, Thomas acknowledged the tight win and awaits the final figures.

In a nod to supporters, the Thomas camp noted: “No matter the final result, thank you for all you helped with. Every door knocked, sign planted, postcard written, phone call completed and voter recruited. …There are very specific rules that must be followed to obtain the truest possible picture of the final vote. We will keep you posted as we progress through these steps.”

According to the Virginia Department of Elections, there are no automatic recounts in Virginia elections. Only an apparent losing candidate can ask for a recount, and only if the difference between the apparent winning candidate and the apparent losing candidate is not more than one percent of the total votes cast for those two candidates.

The apparent losing candidate cannot request a recount until after the election is certified.

According to election rules, if contestants with a higher margin want a recount, they are responsible for the cost but if it is less than a one percent margin, as in the case of the Sellers/Dudenhefer race, the locality will pay for the recount.

Provisional ballots will be counted next week, according to the department of elections.

Thomas runs a software company and currently leads the George Washington District on the Stafford County Board of Supervisors. Cole is an associate pastor at Union Bell Baptist Church in south Stafford. The winner will succeed Speaker Bill Howell, who’s held the delegate seat for the past 30 years.

Acknowledging the tight margin, the Thomas camp noted: “Every vote did count!”

As of Tuesday, Cole had not announced whether he would challenge the results.

Thomas earlier prevailed over fellow Stafford County Board of Supervisor Paul Milde, R-Aquia, for the Republican nomination to run for the position, with Howell’s endorsement.

That left Milde’s supervisor’s seat up for grabs.

In Tuesday’s election, Republican Cindy Shelton ran away with the win in the Aquia District. She raked in 2,318 votes compared to Democrat Yolanda Roussell’s 1,605 votes and Independent Sharon Foley’s 1,264 votes, according to preliminary numbers from the department of elections.

In the Falmouth supervisors’ race, incumbent Republican Meg Bohmke was victorious over Democrat Greg Bundrick, 3,613 votes to 2,227.

Incumbent Supervisor Gary Snellings, R-Hartwood, beat out Democratic challenger Tracey Bell to keep his seat in the Hartwood District. Snellings garnered 3,550 votes and Bell had 3,118 votes.

In the Stafford County School Board race, Pamela Yeung took in 3,035 votes, beating Barton Randall (2,075 votes) in the Garrisonville Distirct.

School board incumbent Scott Hirons, however, lost in the Falmouth District to challenger Sarah Breedin Chase. She took in 3,336 votes and Hirons had 2,418 votes.

In the Aquia and Hartwood District races, no one challenged incumbent Irene Egan, who retained her seat in the Aquia District. The same was true for incumbent Holly Hazard, who retained her seat in the Hartwood District.

Incumbent Republican Mark Cole held onto his seat in the House of Delegates’ 88th District. Cole had 13,990 votes, with Democrat Steve Aycock receiving 9,883 votes, Independent candidate Amanda Blalock pulling in 2,361 votes and Green Party candidate Gerald Anderson raking in 252 votes. In Stafford, Cole won with 52.75 percent of the vote.

The shuffle put Makee at a decided financial disadvantage in the race, as he was only able to raise about $228,000 to Foy’s $513,000. Even then, the bulk of his cash came courtesy of Republican leaders

She plans to continue serving in her current role when lawmakers aren’t session in Richmond, and she’s particularly interested in using that experience in the

“There’s only prosecutors at the table right now, so to have real criminal justice reform, you have to have criminal defense attorneys down there, and public defenders down there,” Foy said.

I don’t know if he was wounded, but he probably was. And like many veterans—particularly the British, who tend to be more reserved about such things— he didn’t talk about it much. But he did wear his medal that one Sunday and it changed my view of what a veteran was ever after.

Namely, that those who serve their country, whether doing heroic deeds or just the often unglamorous things that needed doing, can be anybody.

Appearances, as they were in this case, are deceiving. A veteran can be an old man in a nursing home. Your child’s teacher. Perhaps a granddad, a father, mother, uncle, brother or a sister. Your mechanic, the bank manager, a coworker, and the list goes on and on.

But they all have one thing in common and that is that for some period of their life they served their country in the armed forces. They will often say, and it’s a common quote among veterans, that they were just “doing their jobs” or “doing what they were told to do.”

Fair enough. But whether they choose to frame their service in these words or not, they were also protecting us and our way of our life.

This Veterans Day, and indeed every day, they deserve our thanks.

The healing power of patriotism Veterans Day takes on a new dimension for those of us who have worn a uniform and sworn against the nation’s enemies, foreign and domesDANIEL CORTEZ tic. We have always found pride in our national anthem.

Disgracefully, pride in the patriotism of those who bled or perished is being defied, as politically divisive issues dampen our national ardor.

During the gubernatorial election, attack ads suggested Republicans promoted racial intolerance and supported mass deportation. Opponents suggested Democrats endorsed sanctuary cities and did little to combat MS-13 gangs.

Then we have those protesting historical monuments and NFL players refusing to stand to honor our flag.

The flag drama takes on personal significance as I prepare to perform the anthem Sunday, Nov. 12, at FedEx Field for the second time, before the Redskins’ game against the Vikings.

It is genuinely painful to see NFL players taking a knee during the anthem as

their way of forcing social justice, rather than recognizing the therapeutic power of the “Star-Spangled Banner” and honoring our flag.

What their actions have actually done is angered fans, as stadium attendance and revenues decline across the NFL, diminishing the profit-sharing return to players.

Is taking a knee worth almost a 20 percent cut in pay when there remain more civil and responsible remedies, such as working with civic or law enforcement groups or seeking congressional intervention?

What the players fail to acknowledge are the patriotic activities of the Redskins, thanks to the leadership of owner Dan Snyder and team President Bruce Allen.

During Sunday’s veterans appreciation game, the Redskins will also honor Native American Indian History Month. As one of four generations of Cortez family veterans and proudly having Aztec Indian blood, singing the anthem will be emotional and curative.

It can be for disgruntled NFL players as well, because the anthem and our national emblem are the symbols of the EDUCATION

Band Together to Fight Hunger brought in 3,427 pounds of food, enough to provide 2,856 meals to the community, during a concert of the five Stafford County high school bands at Mountain View High School on Monday evening, according to event coordinator Karen Bingham. Additionally, business partner donations totaled $16,400, which equals 32,800 meals. The total of 35,656 meals will go to the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank and exceeds this year’s goal of 30,000 meals. This total will continue to rise as concessions are tabulated and additional donations are collected, Bingham said.

In spite of occasional internal issues, there is no more patriotic team in football than the Washington Redskins, the first team to honor veterans with their Redskins Salute program. Veterans regularly attend team functions free of charge as

players honor our region’s military community to boost morale and help heal the suffering. And the Redskins charities do remarkable work providing for Native American and minority communities.

Unlike other NFL franchises, the Redskins do not charge the military for the programs that might benefit recruiting.

The election is over, and the Redskins’ on- and off-the-field actions serve as the catalyst to educate and add to our history by honoring their moniker and recognizing the therapeutic power of our symbol of change found in our national flag and anthem.

Scouts crack the code at Curtis Park The Aquia District Boy Scouts of the Stafford, Quantico and Frederickburg region held their annual Fall Camporee and Webelos-ree on Oct. 20-22 at Curtis Park in Stafford.

This year’s theme was “Crack the Code,” and some 500 Boy Scouts, Webelos and adult volunteers camped out and used fundamental Scout skills as they worked on requirements toward the Signs, Signals and Codes merit badge, according to a news release. Scouts also took part in a ham radio station, campfire program and campsite competition for the Commissioners’ Cup. Some of the merit badge-specific stations were semaphore, cryptography and the American sign language telephone game. Other Scout skills stations were knot tying, giant clove hitch, orienteering, search and rescue, first aid, and fire building.

A favorite station turned out to be The Stalking Game, where a Scout is blindfolded in a chair with five plastic forks in the ground at his feet.

Scouts had to stalk up without being heard, take a fork and stalk back to the starting line. If he was heard, the Scout had to start at the beginning.

There was also an 80-foot “Monkey Bridge” for the Boy Scouts and Webelos to challenge, and Dan Nellis (who coordinated building the bridge) gave a seminar on making rope with a machine he brought.

The Webelos-ree focused on disability awareness. Scout events included signing the Scout oath, knot tying wearing mittens, blindfold relay, reading braille, code relay, hiking and finding trail signs, engineering code breaker game, learning about installing and unstopping a sink drain, installing and uninstalling a door lock, and electrical circuits. One of the real highlights of the weekend was a Saturday lunch time special featuring a U.S. military veteran and his service dog, Morgan, from Paws for Vets.

The weekend closed out with the Commissioner’s Campfire on Saturday night.

Cub Scouts serves families with children in Kindergarten through 5th Grade; Boy Scouts serves families with children ages 11-18. There are also BSA programs for families with older Youths, ages 14 – 21, including becoming Venturers, Explorers or Sea Scouts.

It happened so quickly. North Stafford held a 19-18 lead in the second set and then – boom, boom, boom, boom – four quick points, a timeout from their opponents and a gym full of cheering fans.

A few points later North Stafford closed out the set, 25-19, and erased Albemarle’s best chance to extend the Class 5 Region D final. The student section erupted in a chant of “This is our house,” a fitting saying that somehow still came up short. Yes, this was North Stafford’s house, but after cruising to a 25-20 win in the third set, now also its region, and maybe soon, its state.

“Every team says they want to win states, but entering this season I felt we had a legitimate chance,” said North Stafford coach Nicole Candelora, whose team improved to 19-0 with the win Wednesday night. “The whole season has been about keeping that focus. There have been times I felt like the girls were just ready to get to this part of the season – to play in these games that really matter.”

North Stafford is now three wins away from a state title. They play Nov. 11 at home in the state quarterfinal against

The region final showed why North Stafford has had so much success this season. With three Division 1 commitments – Isis Black, and Gabby and Sydney Ferguson – the Wolverines feature a longarmed and incredibly athletic front line that can protect the net, chase down loose balls and finish when given the chance.

The Wolverines won the first set, 2511, and were able to fight off any attempts from Albemarle to make the match close.

The Patriots made a brief run in the third set, cutting the deficit to two points after North Stafford led by as many as seven, but the Wolverines were able to close it out.

“This win does mean a lot,” Black said.

“A North Stafford volleyball team has never won the region. Our goal all along has been the state title and we know each opponent will get tougher. This win, though, is a reflection of the work we’ve put in all year.”

Sophomore Victoria Barrett led North Stafford with nine kills while Black and Sydney Ferguson each had eight. Aubrey Lynch and Mainerys Munoz paced the offense with 14 and 10 assists, respectively, while on defense Sydney Ferguson and Gisele Fuentes each had eight digs.

Cedrick Watkins is winding down a college football career at University of Virginia-Wise in which he was part of history for the program.

A 2014 graduate of North Stafford High School, Watkins is a senior wide receiver and was a member of the first Division II recruiting class for UVA-Wise as it made the transition from the NAIA level.

Watkins looked at several colleges for football, including Shepherd, Fairmont State, Notre Dame of Ohio, West Virginia Wesleyan, West Liberty and Glenville.

“It was a different experience. When I first got here I didn’t know what to expect,” he said. “We were a lot smaller than everyone else. We were not funded as much as other Division II programs.

We played hard. You could tell we weren’t ready to compete [against top programs].

I feel we molded into what they were looking for.”

“The first year—since the team was smaller—we depended on a lot of freshmen to play right away,” added Watkins.

“We weren’t physically ready to play against a lot of those teams. But it was a blessing at the same time, as we got a lot of experience. The second year we played better as a unit.”

Following the 2015 season, former UVa.-Wise head coach Dewey Lusk took the same job at Bluefield College.

The new coach was Dane Damron, who played at Georgetown of Kentucky and came to Wise after he had been on the staff of Eastern Kentucky University.

“My junior year the coaching staff changed, and we went 6-5. It was the first winning record since 2009. You could tell CLASSIFIED

a lot of us were together from our freshman year. The chemistry started to click.

This year we are way better as a team,” Watkins said.

The Cavaliers won five of their first nine games this season and end regularseason play at home Saturday, Nov. 11, against Division II powerhouse Shepherd of West Virginia.

It will be Senior Day for the Cavaliers against Shepherd, which advanced to the Division II national title game in 2015.

“I think it is a great test,” Watkins said.

“In four years we have not been able to get the job done against them.”

Watkins had two catches as UVa.-Wise pounded Virginia University of Lynchburg 65-0 in late October.

In the first nine games this season, he had nine catches for 106 yards and one touchdown. He had three catches against West Liberty on Sept. 23.

Last season Watkins tore a labrum the week after the first game of the season and missed the rest of the year.

“This year I have played all over. I missed most of last year; this year I have bounced back,” he said.

Watkins is a sports management major and is part of the student-athlete mentor program at UVa.-Wise. Last summer he had an internship with General Dynamics in Oakton and has interest in cyber security.

Watkins is one of several products of Stafford schools with the team.

Others are senior defensive back Andre Hamilton (North Stafford), junior running back Von Purvis (North Stafford), freshman offensive lineman Jayson Waters (Stafford) and freshman linebacker Trey Heard (North Stafford).

Before even gaining a first down Nov. 3, Colonial Forge led North Stafford 14-0 with 7:40 into the first quarter thanks to interception returns by Ian Ector and Johnnie Walker.

That was the jumpstart the Eagles needed and they never looked back in defeating visiting North Stafford 34-14 to record their first 10-0 season since 2010.

Colonial Forge had already clinched Commonwealth District and the top seed in Class 6, Region B coming into Friday’s game.

But they showed no signs of slowing down against the Wolverines.

Things started off with a bang on the third play of the game. Facing a third and 2 at their own 28, Wolverine quarterback Devin Ravenel threw to his right toward Javon Swinton along the sideline. Ector read the play perfectly and jumped in front to intercept the ball and return it 24 yards for a touchdown at 10:30 of the first quarter.

After turning the ball over after Jadon Redding missed a field goal attempt, North Stafford took over and moved the ball to its own 46.

On a second and 4, North Stafford attempted the same pass play it did on its previous drive only to see the same result.

This time, Walker stepped in and returned the interception 46 yards for the score.

North Stafford (7-3) got on the board after recovering a Colonial Forge fumble at the Eagle 34. Five plays later, running back Devyn Ford scored from a yard out to pull North Stafford within seven following Ben Camden’s extra point.

wood to Zack Kindel before North Stafford came to within seven when Chase McGowan blocked Redding’s field-goal attempt and Shawn Ashbury ran it back 53 yards.

How Digital Technology is Helping Patients Manage Chronic Pain igital apps have long existed to help people lose weight or track exercise, and now, developers are providing new high-tech ways for those living with chronic pain to track key measures of their conditions -- providing a solution to one of the biggest challenges patients face.

For Elizabeth Newman, a 57-year old Chicago native, chronic pain is a way of life and a challenge she shares with more than 100 million Americans. Newman’s chronic pain started after an accident that resulted in a herniated disk and nerve damage that affects her legs and arm. She also has seven fused vertebrae, a spinal surgery that more than 400,000 Americans have every year. While millions of Americans rely on medications such as

opioids to treat their chronic pain, Newman has started using a new mobile app to help tackle some of the complexities of living with chronic pain.

The app and website Newman recently discovered is called PainScale, which offers digital tools that modernize how we understand and communicate about pain. The app gives users an opportunity to track key measures such as pain levels, medication use, treatments and activity levels. It also provides general information about treatment options and how to connect with a pain specialist in the area. Patients can share information from the app with their physicians who may decide to use the information to tailor a treatment plan and assess what may not be working with their current approach.

“Using PainScale has motivated me to

track my pain more consistently, which gives my doctor a better understanding of what I am experiencing, rather than relying strictly on memory. That helps us connect in how we manage it,” says Newman. “Every day I read articles on the app and bookmark those that I find helpful so that I can stay up-to-date on information about my condition and learn about new approaches.”

The free app, which was developed with support from Boston Scientific, provides a range of tools, including a customized daily newsfeed that is personalized to each user based on his or her pain diagnosis, as well as the opportunity to learn about treatment options, exercises,
